Certain assessments require completion of work, which must be observed and evaluated by a Supervisor or Line manager. As this programme is delivered through distance learning or eLearning, students must be capable of studying on their own initiative. Competent knowledge of English as well as basic typing skills as all assessments need to be typed prior to submission for correction.

This course leads to a level 5 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 5 award towards completing the FETAC Advanced Major Award in Early Childhood Care and Education - 6M2009. Following successful completion you will receive a FETAC Level 5 Major award in Early Childhood Care & Education (5M2009). The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. The Open College is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to FETAC awards in the National Framework of Qualifications in Ireland. There is a registration fee payable of €165.00 to include administration, postage & packaging, moderation and FETAC certification.

Protection for Learners on this Childcare Level 5 Major Award As a course provider our policy on the protection for learners is subject to Section 43 of the Qualifications Act. This means that if, for whatever reason, we cease to provide the programme that is over 3 months in duration which you enrolled for, we have specific and legally binding arrangements in place to finish out that programme for you at no extra cost. All course fees for programmes over 3 months in duration are fully protected and secured by a Bank Guarantee. If we cease trading those learners who have not finished their programme will be fully protected by this Bank Guarantee which will be automatically triggered and the fund that covers all Fees paid by learners will be transferred to FETAC by our Bank to enable FETAC provide further study options for these learners or the refund of fees most recently paid so that they can complete their programme and all of this will be at no extra cost to the learners affected.

Programme Details: This FETAC Level 5 Childcare Major award Programme is designed to prepare you to work in a supervised role, competently, safely and effectively with children aged 0 – 6 years. The course is designed to emphasise the integrated nature of work with young children. It will also prepare you to work in a wide range of settings with different professionals and volunteers, recognising and valuing the importance of all of them in providing a service for children and their families. This childcare programme is also structured to provide Graduates with the opportunity to progress to specialised courses in higher education. The programme leads to the FETAC Level 5 major award 5M2009 Early Childhood Care and Education.

Who should complete this course? The programme will cater for a variety of adult learners ranging from school leavers with no previous experience in the ECCE sector to more mature adults with relevant life or work experience. Some of the latter will have previously had some education and training in childcare. More mature adults will frequently be seeking new career opportunities, be working in the home or currently working in the child care sector. These will tend to opt for the part-time learning route to achieving the award. The programme will be open to both male and female learners.

Requirement in credit value is 120 The programme will comprise of 8 modules in order to achieve the full credit value of 120 which is required by all learners. For more detailed information on each module please visit our website www.theopencollege.com. These 8 modules include:

1. Child Development - 5N1764* On successful completion of this module learners will be equipped with knowledge, skill and competence relevant to the theory and practice of child development and learning within Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) settings. This module covers the holistic development of the child including physical, emotional, social and moral, cognitive, language, spiritual, creative and cultural development.

2. Early Care and Education Practice - 5N1770 The Early Care and Education Practice module is designed to equip the learner with the personal skills and knowledge required to work in a professional manner with children, parents and colleagues either in the home or a childcare setting. It aims to promote good practice, equality of opportunity and respect for diversity in lifestyles, religion and culture in early years care.

3. Early Childhood Education and Play - 5N1773 The purpose of this award is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to ensure that each child’s learning development and well-being is facilitated through the provision of opportunities, experiences, activities, interaction, materials and equipment, having regard to the age and stage of development of the child and the child’s cultural context.

4. Child Health and Well Being - 5N1765 This module equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence to provide for the health and well-being of children and maintain healthy, hygienic and safe practices and environments in a range of early childhood care and education (ECCE) settings.

5. Communications - 5N0690 This Communication module will introduce the learner to the core competencies required to be a successful communicator. Looking at Verbal, Non Verbal and Written Communications and how they are used in the childcare setting and other aspects of day-to-day life. We will address peer to peer communications as well as looking at communications from a management point of view.

6. Special Needs Assisting - 5N1786 This SNA module is designed to enable learners to work eectively as Special Needs Assistants and gain an understanding of the skills required to ensure children they are working with become independent learners. They will learn to work under the direction of the teacher and work as part of the multidisciplinary team.

7. Social Studies - 5N1370* This module equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence required for employment in a Social Care Setting. It will introduce learners to the area of sociology and social studies and to develop their understanding and awareness of social issues in their own lives and society in general. Learners will develop basic research skills and learn to recognise the complexity of social issues.

8. Work Experience - 5N1356 Work Experience is a planned experiential learning activity and is an integral part of an educational process. It involves learners preparing and planning for work, working under direction in a specific vocational area and reviewing and evaluating that work. The experience of work enables learners to develop work skills, evaluate employment opportunities and cope with changing work environments. *Students taking these modules will have to sit an examination (â‚Ź50.00) that is normally held in Dublin but arrangements can be made in outside centres around the country.
