To make the statement that “times are changing” would be an understatement. The internet continues to expand its dominance on commerce and art collecting. The Old Print Shop, Inc. is no longer participating in as many art exhibitions outside of the gallery and is instead expanding our in-house gallery events. We are continuing our commitment to printed catalogues; however, we are also expanding our digital catalogues. Every issue of Portfolio that we publish is available on our Issuu page https://issuu.com/theoldprintshop.

Currently, thirty-one catalogues are available online going back to 2016.

ELLEN COX

Ellen Cox studied at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and moved to New York City in 1978. In New York she continued her art training by taking classes at the National Academy of Design and visiting the museums and galleries. Later in 1978 she began staying at Montauk Point and started doing plein air drawings and watercolors of this small town at the end of eastern Long Island. She lived in Montauk Point until 1997.

“I immediately was drawn to the place. It offered up the undulating ribbon off the Old Montauk Highway snaking through windswept bluffs, the gestural pints, the wild grape vines twisting around and engulfing everything. And, of course, the main attraction, the ocean.”

“I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to learn to see. I would ride my bike around Hither Hills and Montauk Village stopping when I saw something appealing, take out my sketchbook and draw. . . .”

Her work has been exhibited at Renee Fotouhi Fine Art East Gallery, Elaine Benson Gallery, Gardiner Mill Cottage Gallery, among others.

DEANN L. PROSIA

DeAnn L. Prosia was born in Chicago, IL, and studied at Northern Illinois University and the Art Institute of Chicago. She learned printmaking from Phillip Thompson. She is a member of the Society of American Graphic Artists (SAGA) where she served as Vice President (2019 – 2021) and then

“When you stand before DeAnn Prosia’s etchings, sometimes you long for a magnifying glass. Her views of the city are so finely drawn and rich in detail that the first fleeting glance is hardly enough to grasp it all.” Martina Koch, Art Critic for the Mainzer Rhein-Zeitung (Mainz, Germany newspaper).

“I have always been fascinated by how society has historically built beautiful and interesting architecture to fill the needs of people in their everyday lives. With my etchings, I’m structurally creating images by building up layers of line and tone. Recently, I find myself interested in structures in less recognizable locations, hoping people will focus on the technique and detail I’ve built up through my cross-hatching and construction of my work.” Prosia

REYNOLDS BEAL

Reynolds Beal was born in 1867 and studied at Cornell from 1885-1889 with a focus on naval architecture. He later worked at Morgan Iron Works drafting designs for ship engines. In 1891, he began his official art training at the Art Students League and in 1896 he studied under William Merritt Chase at Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. Beal had two passions, his art and sailing the coast. His love of the marine environment resulted in paintings of maritime scenes from Rockport to the Hudson, as well as the Caribbean. Beal’s first solo exhibition took place at the Clauson Gallery in New York City in 1905, and he would later become a founding member of the Society of Independent Artists in 1917. He was one of the few Americans chosen to have their work exhibited at the Luxembourg Museum in Paris in 1919.

Beal was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Engravers, the National Arts Club and in 1909 was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. He also founded the New Society of Artists, which consisted of fifty of the most influential painters of that time, among them - Childe Hassam, Maurice Prendergast, George Bellows, and William Glackens.

All of these drawings and many others came from the Estate of Reynolds Beal in an indirect way. The estate was sold to Robert Cambell of Shore Galleries in Boston around 1972. Mr. Cambell passed away in 1973 and the estate was put in storage. It was given to Vose Galleries in Boston in the early 1980’s. The gallery sold off most of the oil paintings before selling the drawings and small watercolors to William Greenbaum and The Old Print Shop, Inc., in the mid 1980’s.
