From the Editor

A smaller issue this month. I spent a significant amount of time investigating health issues in French Bulldogs and what tests should be done. I have compiled a checklist which can be used by owners, breeders, vets and buyers. Its by no way complete and should be used as a working document. Please have a proper look at it, send me your comments by email or Facebook and for heavens sake get going with this and get your dogs health checked! In this issue there is a basic anatomy lesson about the back . We look at bad and good breeders and why or why not X-Rays could be done before or after the age of 18 months. There is an interview with Barbara McCarthy of Banyan Kennels in the USA. Barbara always post the most wonderful pictures of her dogs on the beach. Thanks to Maggie Swart and Trudi Bronkhorst for your assistance in this regard. I trust that you will enjoy this month’s issue!

Bad and good owners There are bad owners and bad breeders the same as there are good owners and good breeders, I don’t think anybody sets out to be bad but sometimes it just is the way it is. Injuries can happen out of carelessness or ignorance, it falls on us, as conscientious breeders to educate our new families on how to protect our french bulldogs, not jumping on and off furniture, especially when young, heat intolerance etc

X-rays at only 18 months?

The notion of “you can only X-ray at 18 months” is totally absurd. Here is the correct interpretation of that..... In terms of running screening tests for X-rays of hips, spines etc to asses soundness for breeding etc in healthy dogs with no visible problems, then 18 months is the ideal age. But in terms of investigating a problem - particularly if the dog cannot walk (regardless of whether it’s sudden onset or not) then xraying can be done at any age and any stage of development. Doing X-rays on its own will get no one anywhere, I recommend possibly CT or MRI scans. Thank you Glen Kolenc (Australia)

Spines & Vertebrae This is a basic anatomy lesson of the back, just to describe some basic terms which will be the basis of a series of articles on back problems, over subsequent issues. VERTEBRAE The vertebrae are simply and literally the bones of the back :ie: the “back bones”. The first vertebra connects to the back of the skull and the 2nd vertebra. The 2nd vertebrae connects to the 1st, and 3rd. The 3rd connects to the 2nd and 4th….and so on…. much like a series of train carriages connected together. The vertebrae themselves are connected together by muscles and ligaments which hold them stable. There is a thin rubber-like “shock-absorbing” disc that sits between each vertebrae. They prevent the back bones rubbing on each other when we move. They are called InterVertebral Discs (or IV discs). In dogs, there are 7 vertebrae in the neck (called Cervical Vertebrae). Then there are 13 vertebrae that are connected to the ribs (called Thoracic vertebrae).

The next 7 vertebrae which are in the lower back and are called Lumbar vertebrae. The next vertebrae, which interlocks with the pelvis is called the Sacrum. Beyond the sacrum, the vertebrae are called the Caudal vertebrae (and these make up the tail). THE SPINAL CORD (or SPINE) The spinal cord extends from our brain and ends at the tip of the tail. It runs through a “tunnel”; or a ‘hole’ in each vertebrae, such that the entire spinal cord is housed or encased in the bony vertebrae, for protection. Between each vertebrae, some nerves will pass out from the spinal cord, and these nerves travel to their destination and allow them to function. For a dog to use its back legs, nerve signals go from the brain, travel down the spinal cord, and nerves come out of the spinal cord in the lumbar region and tell the leg muscles what to do. There are a multitude of back, vertebral, spinal and nerve problems that can occur. These will be discussed next month. Glen Kolemc (Australa)
