JESSE OWENS RECREATION CENTER Project type: University Gym Location: Columbus, OH instructor: Tom Lewis|Autumn 2016 The Jesse Owens Recreation Center embodies an athletic icon, convenient circulation, and clear distribution program through its metamorphosis from basic icon imitation to architectural spiritual expression. Diagrams show this transformation as well as the spatial division and structural existence of the project. The triangulated extrusions express the livelihood of the athletes that will utilize the space: Sharp angles are used to evoke energy and motion. The triangulated polysurface references the obstacles endured by a young Jesse Owens as well as his own metamorphosis into a commemorated icon.

HOLMES COUNTY COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER Project type: Art Center Location: Millersburg, OH instructor: Sandhya Kochar|Autumn 2016 The Holmes County Community Art Center is located in the countryside, surrounded by a small community and splendid view of the jungle. In its setting, the project is bold. Its defined geometries are juxtaposed against nature, even as the lamination form ties the project to the contours of the landscape. Thus, both the interior and exterior spaces are laminated to reflect the topography. As a result, the movement of people would be regulated through various ratio of steps, which is created by lamination.

Gaps in the shifting layers of lamination invite sunlight into the building. The building’s surface is recreated on the inside by sunlight, a natural element, thus integrating the building’s artificial texture with its environment. Due to changes in elevation, the visitors inside can also see the people below the building.

AEROPOLIS Project type: Air Dossier & Precedent Study instructor: Galo Canizares|Spring 2017 The goal of this project is for responding to the physical, social, and environmental context of air and develop sophisticated provocations. It is not only about improving the representational skills in grafics and excellence in craft, but also need to address projects of increasing complexity both in terms of research and material production. The Cloud Cities, Supersurface and Orbit City are selected for precedent study, and then design the city that these projects would ne located and how they react to each other.

Detail Section

Jeff the Giant Sloth, the full skeleton of a Jefferson’s Ground Sloth found in Ohio in 1890. In recognition of Jeff’s fame and elder status, the university has decided to relocate Jeff to a purpose built building. The idea of Skeleton within the Skeleton let visitors enjoy the experience of space evolution-from narrow to openess and darkness to lightness.

Concrete Design Project The concreate design Proect is used to let students undestand the characteristic of concrete and the prodection process. With known the material, utilize it to create visual art would be the second goal. In order to explore the hardness of concrete, the concept of design used double mass on top and set upon the center of base. As a result, the base averagelly receive the weight from top.
