Valby Bibliotek
Valby Bibliotek has outgrown its premises and is now set to move to Toftegårdsplads. Toftegårdsplads is divided into two parts, and the new library will be located in the northern part. The library is
placed along the edge of the square, shielding the busy intersection at Vigerslev Allé. The library provides the framework for new life on the square, where social sustainability and biodiversity are highly prioritized. Valby Bibliotek is divided into two buildings connected by a lower level floor,
allowing for a passageway that helps ensure natural surveillance of the square. Valby Bibliotek will naturally bring more activity to the area, and combined with the newly constructed square, it creates great opportunities for increased activity in the nearby shops.
The square will feature an abundance of trees, and it’s worth noting that some of the original trees from the square will be preserved, adding a touch of history and continuity to the redesigned space. These trees will not only provide shade but also contribute to the square’s overall aesthetic
and ecological value. Curved benches will be strategically placed along the square, creating inviting seating areas where people can relax, socialize, and enjoy the surroundings. Additionally, the square has been thoughtfully designed to serve as a water collection spot. It has been slightly
lowered to allow for efficient rainwater drainage and collection. One of the two roads surrounding the square has been closed off. This adjustment serves multiple purposes. It enhances the integration of the square with potential nearby shops, making it a more pedestrian-friendly and vibrant area.
Closing off one road also contributes to creating a safer environment, reducing traffic-related risks and further promoting the square as a welcoming community space.
The building’s facade is a blend of natural elements, featuring a harmonious combination of wood beams, glass panels, and wood shingles. This architectural choice not only stands out but also seamlessly integrates with the surrounding urban landscape. The use of wood shingles, in particular, adds a fresh and distinctive touch to a otherwise predominantly red brick-dominated intersection. These shingles, with their warm, earthy tones, offer a beautiful contrast to the traditional brick structures. However, they do so while maintaining a respectful continuity with the established aesthetic. It’s a design choice that brings a contemporary flair while staying in line with the timeless appeal of brick architecture.
