01 MARS COLONIZATION Design of Mars Base for Interstellar Colonization Program December 2023 Site: MARS In 2187, after the moon, humans launched a plan to colonize Mars. As the closest and most suitable planet to the earth, Mars has been entrusted with humankind’s dream of colonizing space. Many people have signed up to build bases on Mars, hoping to build Mars into a second home. There are also many people who are eager to travel to the stars and explore Mars.

The design plans to build a skyscraper on Mars wrapped in ETFE membrane. The building consists of seven different functional levels and residential modules suspended below the functional floors. It can meet all the needs of Mars residents and interstellar tourists.

The Mars base consists of seven functional levels and residential modules suspended below the functional layers.

Mars residents enter the base from the middle transportation hub level and take drones or high-speed elevators to wherever they want to go.

02 LIFE PASSAGE Design of Sanjiangyuan National Park Wildlife Rescue Station & Visitor Center June 2023 Academic Work Site: Qinghai China The beautiful and wild Hoh Xil is where Tibetan antelopes have lived for generations, However, with the development of tourist areas, human activities have once again affected the survival and migration of Tibetan antelopes.

This design aims to build a life passage along the Qinghai-Tibet Highway to allow Tibetan antelopes to safely cross the highway and go to the place where they breed. Lost or injured Tibetan antelopes will also be rescued here and reintroduced into the wild. Meanwhile, it will also become a place for tourists to rest and popularize the importance of protecting nature to them.

The station is located in Sanjiangyuan National Park, along the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, backed by the vast Hoh Xil Nature Reserve. This is one of China's four major uninhabited areas, which is an important habitat for many wild animals and has a fragile ecological environment. Every May, Tibetan antelopes migrate to the hinterland of Hoh Xil to give birth and return to their original habitat in July. The rescue station provides rescue and shelter for the surrounding wildlife. At the same time, it is also an important ecological experience and environmental education node on the tourist route of the national park. It will become the starting point for ecological experience projects entering Hoh Xil and an important environmental education base along the Highway, which will also carry the daily activities of volunteers and researchers.

03 VANISHED BRIDGE Stitching of Spaces on Both Sides of Overpasses September 2023 Academic Work Site: Suzhou China The elevated expressway network provides convenience for busy and complex urban traffic, but the huge infrastructure volume also brings a “burden” to the urban ecological environment and citizens’ lives. The emergence of the overpass blocks the ecological connection on both sides of the road, restricting the movement of people, animals, and plant growth; the space under the bridge is insufficiently illuminated, creating a sense of depression.

This design is located at the Shihu Park section of Youxin Interchange, aiming to eliminate the negative impact of the viaduct through “horizontal” and “vertical” design strategies.

SUZHOU YOUXIN INTERCHANGE With the urban development of Suzhou, traffic pressure has increased, and overpasses have become an important part of urban rapid transportation.

However, huge viaducts divide urban space into many disconnected blocks, which also poses a serious threat to the biological life in the city.

▪ SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGIES

Add photovoltaic modules to street lights Set up a prefabricated vertical green wall Install a rainfall pipe network on the underside of the overpass to assist in dust and acoustic panels under the bridge to block dust suppression and irrigation.

▪ MASTER PLAN

Youxin Overpass is a two-way urban expressway with six lanes and a width of more than 33 meters. Due to its huge linear mass, which divides the city into two parts, the two sides of the overpass are difficult to communicate with, both human and natural. Our design aims to bridge the urban cracks created by the overpass through the ecological bridge and footbridge, and to make full use of the negative space under the bridge through the insertion of wooden frames.

04 LONG ISLAND A Plan for the Revival of the Ancient City of Suzhou Based on the Games for All June 2023 Academic Work Site: Suzhou China The ancient city of Suzhou, founded more than 2,000 years ago, has been synonymous with heaven on earth since ancient times. Now, however, the ancient city is dying. With an aging population, traffic congestion and environmental degradation, the ancient city of Suzhou has lost its original vitality.

Long Island, located in the southwest corner of the ancient city, floats above the moat. We see it as a breakthrough in the ancient city's dilemma. Through the re-planning of Long Island, we will make Long Island a sports district suitable for all ages, hoping to inject vitality back into the old city.

RESIDENCE The south end of the site is relatively closed, and it is close to the osmanthus Park (mainly serving the surrounding residents), so a small number of residential functions are placed and connected with the osmanthus Park.

The design starts from the reality of the lack of vitality and serious aging of the ancient city of Suzhou, and builds the Long island on the southwest moat river of the ancient city into a national sports island.

By means of site function replacement, business renewal and spatial activation, the Long Island is endowed with new vitality.

This design divides Long Island into six groups, each group around a central function, sports as the main line, for the surrounding residents and visitors to provide daily leisure sports venues. While undertaking small and medium-sized sports events, in different festivals it can also hold a variety of folk activities.

WATER SPORTS Based on the particularity of the water around the venue, a natural circular water track is formed, which is mainly used for contracting amateur rowing activities under the national games.

GYMNASIUM The large sports stadium building inside the site is designed to host festivals and competitive events. In normal time, it acts as a sports space for residents to meet the sports needs of people of different ages.

OUTDOOR SPORTS VENUE It is distributed at different elevations in the field, so that people of different sports can communicate with each other.

At the same time, the activity space on the ground mainly serves the daily exercise needs of the surrounding elderly.

VIEWING DECK The commanding heights inside the base are combined with the second floor walkway and racing track to become a unique viewing spot inside the site.

Through the resetting of functions, more kinds of young favorite services are placed to attract young people to enter the ancient city. At the same time, related services are placed based on the needs of surrounding residents and students to meet the basic service needs.

According to the needs of different age groups and different types of people, different functional blocks are combined to form different spatial feelings.

The design of underground motorway undertakes the ground traffic of excessive motor vehicles, to solve the problem of traffic congestion in the ancient city. The two-level pedestrian trail system is constructed to meet the activity needs of different elevations.

Customized design for different types of waterfront Spaces. The waterfront space at the ends of the island becomes a large outdoor activity venue for the daily activities of the surrounding residents. The waterfront space within the island is combined with water sports.

Group Ⅱ NATATORIUM Natatorium Group is located on the south side of Zhuhui Bridge Hub, including indoor natatorium, rooftop swimming pool and supporting leisure and entertainment buildings. The rooftop swimming pool connects with the skywalk, becoming an important node for leisure and entertainment.

Group Ⅲ THEATRE Theater Group is located in the middle section, across the Zhuhui Bridge, and is also a major transportation hub connecting the outside and inside of Long Island. Outside vehicles can access the Long Island Underground Transit loop and parking lot. The Theater over Zhuhui Bridge can also be used as a venue for performance sports such as gymnastics and martial arts.

Group Ⅳ ICE RINK ice rink group is located on the north side of Zhuhui Bridge Hub and consists of an indoor ice rink and supporting commercial buildings.

The indoor ice rink can be used for ice and snow sports throughout the year, enrich the types of sports, and the surrounding commercial facilities to undertake the flow of people from Zhuhui Bridge into the Long Island.

Group Ⅴ BALL FIELD Ball Field Group is located in the middle section and includes two competition-level venues, as well as venues for general competition or daily training and recreation. The roof platforms with different elevations are connected by aerial walkways and can be used as outdoor venues for different sports, providing different spatial experiences.

Group Ⅵ SKATE PARK Skate Park Group is located on the northernmost side of Long Island and includes a rooftop skate park, go-kart track and supporting commercial service facilities. The Fenmen Bridge crosses the north end of Long Island and connects to the Long Island Underground Transit Loop via an onramp.

07 DIGITAL TAIHU ROCK A 'Human-In-The-Loop' Workflow 2

March 2023- May 2023 CDRF 2023 Site: Jiangsu China This research uses an expanded polystyrene (EPS) Taihu rock as a demonstrator to illustrate a workflow encompassing shape grammar-based design and Mixed Reality (MR)-aided robotic fabrication. It aims to address a post-digital mindset that values human’s tacit knowledge and craftsmanship within CAD-CAM processes.
