California love Shane Illingworth’s play excited OSU players, fans By Ryan Novozinsky Despite only playing a little over one quarter, Shane Illingworth is already a hit in Stillwater. After a game-saving performance Saturday against Tulsa, which started with an impressive 24yard pass to wide receiver Tylan Wallace, Illingworth received high praise from his coaches and teammates. “I had no issues with (Illingworth) going in,” said Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn. “He’s a great pocket passer. He’s very, very poised as I mentioned earlier. He’s a great kid, he’s a student of the game. He’s going to be a heck of a player.” After starting quarterback Spencer Sanders left the game with a high ankle sprain and backup Ethan Bullock struggled to score against Tulsa, Dunn and Mike Gundy switched to Illingworth late in the third quarter. This decision instantly jolted the crowd. “For me it was maybe a little surprising,” Wallace said of Illingworth’s performance. “Seeing him, I know he can play, I know he can ball, I know he can do what he’s supposed to do. But with him being a freshman and coming out there, first time playing in the big time, big stage or whatever, you don’t really know what to expect. He definitely exceeded my expectations. Went out there and just did his thing. So I’m really proud of the way he played.” After eventually leading OSU to a 16-7 win in an up-and-down game, Illingworth became an instant fan favorite. Some social media users started referring to Stillwater as “Illwater” and former OSU players, such as NFL cornerback AJ Green, voiced their praise for his play. “I like this QB,” Green said in a tweet. Overall though, Illingworth was most excited about “California Love” by Tupac and Dr. Dre blaring in Boone Pickens Stadium–– which was a nod to his home state. “That California Love playing... that was sweet,” Illingworth said in a postgame tweet.
