If we consider the four seasons as a metaphor for spiritual development along the human journey, as many cultures across the globe do, then Fall with its penchant for the perpetual gloom of overcast days, dramatic winds and long rainy nights surely mirrors the melancholic interiority of adolescence
In the model I teach of the Wilderness Quest, one I’ve adapted slightly from my training with Sparrow Hart in the lineage of the School of Lost Borders, the autumn is the time when Fall’s youth discovers the Big Lie that Summer was not eternal In this model, the role of Fall’s Youth is to initiate Summer’s child to become Winter’s Adult, eventually to usher in the time of Spring’s Elder/Infant If all this sounds cryptic but intriguing, join us in The Numinous Network for my lesson on The Rites of Fall, Wednesday, Sept 10, 10am - 12pm PT For those who’ve taken my Numinous Quest workshops in the past, here are some reminders:
Tending the Mother Wound
In my studies with Sarah Peyton in Family and Systemic Constellations – or rather, what she terms Emergent Constellations due to her unconventionally intuitive, permissive, and improvisational approach – she has frequently invoked a script used to rescind a sacred contract that no longer serves an individual or family system well. The script has two parts. Below is Part 1. The process reminds me of sections from Starhawk and Hilary Valentine’s seminal book on ritual, 12 Wild Swans, wherein they explore the breaking of the wicked vow. Rescinding an unconscious agreement to emotionally caretake a parent is thorny, scary work We met as a small group in June to tend the Mother Wound and do a mini Constellation to explore releasing unconscious contracts.
The second part of the script is when we rescind the unconscious contract.

2. Release Grief to Unleash Action
Overwhelming emotions often lead to stuckness, freeze, and a sense of futility or despair. When we journey through a death scene and experience release or welcome “ on the other side”, there can be an unblocking of unresolved emotional material that makes way for more motivation and mobilization in our present day life
3. Explore Alternative Realities
It’s common when working towards social change to wonder, Will it always be this way? Time travelling to places where our ancestors or past selves made happy lives in spite of many hardships can offer a new perspective
4. Heal Trauma on Your Own time
Rather than bring generational trauma into an activist space, we can explore past lives as part of a root origin of unmanageable or “treatment-resistant” pain, freeing up more of our energy for the cause
5. Connect with Something Bigger
Many people feel showered with love and immersed in awe when visiting the moment of “life between lives” – after a death and before a reincarnation when we reconnect with a sense of belonging to a soul group or universal consciousness Those feelings can leave a lasting impression, stirring us to recommitment and devotion to creating a compassionate society for all, regardless of “ success ” in this lifetime
