Rina Pileggi was five months pregnant with twins when she and her husband, Ralph, received devastating news that one twin’s heart wasn’t properly developing.

Doctors at The Hospital for Sick Children told the North York parents the girl, named Alivia Nina, would likely die in utero. And to make matters worse, Rina and Ralph were told the other twin, Domenic, would Saturday also likely die in the womb.

But the pregnancy went full term, and both babies were born via caesarean section on July 8, 2011.

Alivia was immediately whisked away to SickKids (Rina had given birth at nearby Mount Sinai Hospital), where she spent the next several weeks gaining weight so doctors could perform heart surgery.

What started as one student’s dream to start a hockey team at his school has grown into

a program that’s given more than 100 students a chance to play organized hockey for the first time.

“The Toronto Time Capsule is an exciting work in progress,” said Grace Peacock, project manager and editor with Metroland Media.

“Just as you’d find fascinating things if you dug up an actual time capsule, it’s our intention to build a collection of stories, old photographs and news articles that can live on to represent the history of our city. We’re adding more to it every day.”

All was quiet at York University’s Keele Campus yesterday with classes suspended due to the strike by the union representing teaching assistants, graduate assistants, and contract faculty.

First-year students Awa Diallo and Keisha Bundsch, who both live in residence, were the only two people eating at their long table in what is normally a very busy Student Centre food court.

“When you walk on campus, there’s no one,” said Diallo, since the strike action by the 3,700 Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 3903 members took place Tuesday.

While it’s only been a couple of days since union members started picketing at the campus entrances, Diallo hoped the strike would be resolved sooner than later.

“As long as it’s not more than two weeks long, I’m good,” said Diallo, who expressed concern over where students like herself would stay if classes extended into the summer.

Bundsch agreed, adding it’s of greater concern for the international students.

“In our residence, there are a lot of international students and they’re stressed,” Bundsch said.

She added it’s also hard to decide whether to find a part-time job in the

meantime or to wait and hope that classes will resume shortly.

“I don’t know how long it’s going to take,” Bundsch said of the strike.

Both the union and university officials have expressed their desire to return to the bargaining table after negotiations broke off earlier this week.

Teaching assistants Chris Bailey and Steve Maher walked the picket lines with other union members - one holding a sign saying “Job security = Better York.”

It’s one of the main issues for the union, noting that while contract faculty perform more than 60 per cent of teaching at York, it represents about eight per cent of the univer-

sity’s total operating budget.

“It’s not about greed. It’s about fairness and the quality of education,” said Bailey, currently a teaching assistant and hoping to become a contract faculty member next year.

He pointed out the lack of job security with contract faculty currently having to re-apply for a job every year regardless of whether they’ve been working for the university for five or 20 years.

“One of the problems with that is you’re never guaranteed work,” Bailey said.

The union has also been looking to address the issue of “differential fees for international students”,

which aren’t regulated like they are for domestic students. That has affected Maher, as an international student from the U.S., and many other teaching and research assistants, with tuition fees increasing as high as 90 per cent.

York University president Mamdouh Shoukri responded in a statement that “every reasonable effort was made by the University to reach a fair settlement and avoid this labour disruption.”

“While we face the same fiscal challenges as other institutions in the broader public and university sector, York University has not sought concessions, roll-backs or net zero compensation increases,” Shoukri said. “In fact, the compensation and other collective agreement improvements we are offering are highly competitive with, if not better than, recent settlements elsewhere.”

He called the strike “unfortunate” and said he shared the concerns of the students and their parents.

“The university remains committed to returning to normal operations as quickly as possible so that students can complete their courses and program requirements in as timely a way as possible,” Shoukri said.

While classes are suspended, all York facilities will remain open during usual hours.

Mourners gathered to attend the funeral of Elijah Marsh Saturday morning at St. Matthew’s United Church on St. Clair Avenue West.

The 3-year-old boy had died nine days earlier after wandering from his grandmother’s home into freezing cold nighttime temperatures in the Neptune Drive area of North York.

Despite the accommodations, the crowd overflowed at the entrance of St. Matthew’s; some began to sing hymns outside or enter through other doors.

Rev. Lauren Hodgson of St. Matthew’s opened the service followed by prayer and eulogies given by Elijah’s biological father, his daycare teacher, his stepfather, brother and mother Georgette.

Hopping on the TTC’s kid-free bandwagon There may be no such a thing as a free lunch, but there is now such a thing a free fare. As of last Sunday, children 12 and under are allowed to ride the TTC for free.

I have to admit I was puzzled when I heard the announcement a few months ago. Not by the getting on free part, but by the actual wording of the declaration itself. You see, when I was a kid, I thought that when it came to discussing ages in such a manner, we were told to say “less than” not “under”.

Of course, it’s been so long that I was under 12 or less than 12, I can’t remember the correct way to use a lot of phrases I once learned, let alone these two.

The TTC could very well be right. It might just be my memory playing tricks on me.

Still, since the new fare arrangement was introduced it’s been bugging me which one is right. So, on Sunday morning, after

jamie wayne BUT SERIOUSLY going for a jog didn’t jog the old memory, I decided I would head over to my regular subway station and see if going for a sit and/or stand amongst said demographic group would do the trick.

As it turns out this wasn’t going to be as easy as I thought it would be.

For starters, before I even began my journey, in order to assure you I’d approach the matter with complete objectivity, I had to swear under oath and less than oath, just to be on the safe side. What choice did I have? Credibility is everything when conducting an investigation.

If I didn’t cover all potential bases, my search for the truth would have been under a cloud of suspicion or less than a cloud of suspicion from the get-go. Who needs that?

I also had to make sure I didn’t disclose the purpose of my journey to anyone in advance for fear of being influenced in my decisionmaking by being under close scrutiny or less than close scrutiny during my mission. I was a bundle of nerves, I tell you. I was putting myself under pressure and less than pressure at the same time and I hadn’t even made it to the station, for heaven’s sake.

Then a light bulb went off in my head. Why not wear a disguise? If I go incognito, I’d be able to fly both under the radar and less than the radar at all times, which would allow me to do my research under my own steam and less than my own steam. What’s more, I didn’t have to take the idea under advisement or less than advisement. Heck, a child of under four – or less than four – knows that.

It worked like a charm.

I was able to blend in and speak freely to anybody under the sun and less than

the sun without having my purpose compromised, so I got my answer. Right under the wire, too. Or was it less than the wire?

And my findings? Sorry, not in this issue, I’m afraid.

The result is under wraps and less than wraps. I’m withholding my announcement until we’ve seen the process in action.

But I will tell you this much: when the actual expression is finally published in this space, whether it turns out to be children under 12 or less than 12 matters little from where I sit and/or stand on the TTC. Any way you look at it, the price is right.

The only thing that would be better is if the fares were also free for children over 12 and more than 12. But hey, that’s a column for another day.

Parents say infant daughter Alivia ‘sacrificed her life’ for twin brother >>>from page 1 pulmonary atresia with intact septum that obstructed the outflow of blood from the heart to the lungs due to a completely closed valve.

But a few days later, Alivia was back on the operating table, this time to deal with a blood clot that had formed on her spleen due to the heart surgery.

Her spleen was removed after a five-hour surgery, and her parents went home for the night around 11 p.m. July 25.

But they would return several hours later when doctors called to say blood clots had formed all over little Alivia’s body, including her kidneys and liver.

Alivia passed away at 18 days old on July 26.

Though Rina and Ralph are devastated over the loss of their little girl, there is a shining light at the end of their dark tunnel: her twin, Domenic.

“She brought us her beautiful, healthy, gorgeous twin brother,” Rina said. “I want him to know because of her, he’s here. She sacrificed her

A fundraising event, Liv It Up Home Decor, will be held Saturday, March 7 at Meridian Banquet Hall and Convention Centre, 2301 Keele St., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Rina has so far collected $5,000 since last May from her own fundraising efforts, and knows there is a long way to go to raise the remaining $20,000.

The Liv It Up Home Decor – liv is a play on Alivia’s name, which is

another play on the sentimentally spelled ‘a liv(e)’, instead of traditional spelling – will feature 27 vendors selling everything from food to homemade crafts to jewelry, Rina said, adding admission is free.

Prizes include platinum Toronto Maple Leaf tickets and gift certificates to Starbucks, No Frills, Home Depot, Swiss Chalet and Harvey’s.

Rina plans to hold other fundraisers after the March 7 event, noting it will be some time before $25,000 is reached.

“Every dollar helps,” she said.

Bands battle to raise funds for the Hospital for Sick Children Fannie Sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Knowing how many lives The Hospital for Sick Children has touched, directly and indirectly, a group of organizers decided to hold a benefit concert Friday, with all proceeds going to the downtown hospital.

“We wanted to do something for SickKids,” said North York organizer Jeet Das. “We have friends and family who have benefitted from the work done at the hospital. They see patients from all around the world and we think we need to do our bit as well to help the hospital continue to do the work it does.”

The organizers, all with musical backgrounds, started working on the Above and Beyond Concert (ABC): Rock for SickKids fundraiser last year, Das said, adding it will have a Battle of the Bands-type feel.

But instead of crowning the winner based on performance, the champion of the friendly competition will be the group that raises the most money for SickKids Foundation, Das said.

The five Toronto bands set to

take the stage are Urban Jive, The RoaDogs, Notorious Road, Essential Soul and Ike N’Fez. While there isn’t a specific monetary goal in mind, Das, who plays drums for Urban Jive, is confident numbers will hit five digits.

“We hope to make this an annual event,” he said.

Emily Clark of SickKids Foundation said they are fortunate to be the beneficiary of the concert.

“The organizers of this event are not only creatively engaging their community, but raising critical funds for The Hospital for Sick Children,” she said. “Their support will help provide world-leading care to our patients and their families, and allow us to continue to lead first-in-class research, learning and care.”

T

he developers’ abilities to turn land into gold is causing traffic problems in North York, where residential growth is far outpacing job growth, the City of Toronto’s chief planner Jennifer Keesmaat said.

Keesmaat spoke to North York Community Council at a meeting Feb. 18 to talk about the planning and development issues facing the north end of the city.

In 2014, there were nearly as many committee of adjustment applications from developers (1,138) in the north as there were in the southern corridor of the city (1,281).

However, she added, the southern applications tend to be more complicated, such as one application being made for a multi-building project.

While downtown is exceeding the city’s goals for job growth, North York is below targets as are the other areas of the city, Keesmaat said.

UNDERACHIEVING “We know we’re underachieving in the North York Centre with respect to employment growth,” Keesmaat said.

She said job growth is about 50 per cent below the city’s targets in North York Centre.

Etobicoke’s and Scarborough’s centres are also far below targets.

want to be creating in our centres live-work environments where people have the option to walk to work, to take transit to work, as opposed to being in a position where they’re required to commute downtown and commute outside of the city because that’s where the jobs are.”

EMPLOYMENT LINKED TO TRAFFIC Keesmaat said employment growth across the city is critical to unlocking the traffic congestion. The majority of development is happening along existing and planned higher-order transit.

In North York, significant development continues near York University, around Downsview and the LawrenceAllen area, as well as North York Centre where tall residential buildings continue to sprout along the subway line.

Keesmaat said as North York Centre continues to evolve, it presents an opportunity to become more pedestrian friendly, something it’s currently lacking.

“One of the challenges today, given the way it has been evolving, there are places that are great public spaces, great places to walk, and other places where it completely falls apart,” she said.

She said North York Centre is a destination where people arrive by car instead of transit.

NORTH YORK CENTRE level will begin to shift the way people use the civic centre area.

Other areas of high growth include the Yonge StreetEglinton Avenue area, and along the Sheppard East subway corridor.

AGGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENT There is also significant pressure on North York’s avenues, Keesmaat said, where development is more aggressive than in other parts of the city.

Existing neighbourhoods are seeing development pressures with townhouses being built on the outsides and interiors of existing neighbourhoods. She said this development is changing the character of existing neighbourhoods.

The difficulty for the city with this infill development is that many new homes and residents are added to a neighbourhood without an increase in public amenities, which compromises an area’s livability and walk-

ability.

Townhouse developments in some neighbourhoods create over-intensification, while in others it creates under-intensification, she said.

The city is currently working on townhouse guidelines to help relieve some of these problems.

The city receives a lot of townhouse applications in North York and Etobicoke, Keesmaat said.

One of her favourite daily activities is going for walks so much her foster mom decided to include her in dog sledding practices with her foster sisters.

Police said there was no criminal intent or threat behind the tunnel. There was no ritualistic, terrorism or hate crime-related reason for it.

“We called it ‘personal use,’ but what that means is that they had it in their mind to: ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if we could dig a tunnel and hang out in there?’ and so they did,” said Toronto police spokesperson Const. Victor Kwong.

Kwong said police received a tip about who the bunker builders were and interviewed them, two men who are in their 20s, along with others familiar with the tunnel.

86-centimetre-wide and two-metre-tall underground bunker was found in January by a conservation authority employee about 25 metres from the fence of the Rexall Centre, which will host tennis events at this summer’s Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

Police said they found plywood wall supports inside, as well as a generator and sump pump. A rosary and a Remembrance Day poppy were nailed to a wall. Police said there were food wrappers and empty beverage containers in the tunnel as well.

The tunnel generated enormous interest from media, which helped police identify two men behind its construction.

The two men are not connected to York University, the Rexall Centre or the Pan Am Games, police said.

They’re also not engineers or miners.

One of the most resonant of the points hammered at by 2014 mayoral candidate John Tory was his belief Toronto could not solve its very significant problems on its own.

The federal and provincial governments would need to “come to the table” and pay a significant share of the cost of public housing, public transportation and infrastructure improvement.

It was hard to argue with that premise – the property tax base is a lousy way to finance a city as big as a middle-sized province – and also hard to be too skeptical of Tory’s boasts, that he above all other candidates had the capacity to draw reluctant premiers and prime ministers to that table.

Tory has fostered a great deal of non-partisan goodwill, after all, particularly compared to his predecessor the congenitally partisan Rob Ford.

Toronto commuters have had to endure a harsh winter marked by frequent transit delays and lengthy waits for service to be restored.

Now it seems an unknown rider was fed-up enough to create a TTC Tardy Pass, copies of which were found in the subway over the weekend,

While not official, it does encourage riders to get actual TTC staff to fill out and sign the form, which could then be presented to an employer or significant other to excuse tardiness.

A study by the group Bike to Transit shows an increase in the number of people choosing two wheels over four to get to work.

The 2014 Cycle-Transit user survey (www.tinyurl. com/nfx3rnr) found 72 per cent of respondents either commuted via bicycle for the first time last summer or had been doing so two to five years prior. The study,

the cost of that work falls on the municipality.

And there was a lot of infrastructure rejigging that needed to be done to get that rail line – a rail line that’s pretty much exclusively for the use of air travellers staying in or near downtown Toronto, and priced at $30 a ticket.

A rail line that, in other words, doesn’t really provide that much benefit to commuters who live and travel within Toronto.

Now, this charge didn’t magically appear as Tory took office; city staff has known for years there would be a reckoning.

But by the same token, the magic Rolodex Tory promised to bring to the mayor’s office hasn’t been nearly as effective as originally advertised – at least when it comes to swaying the provincial government to take provincial action on matters important to the city.

orchestra Celebrates spring wconcert

Korean indie girl group The Barberettes will be in North York for two concerts this month as part of the Freedom Music Series celebrating the 70th independence day in Korea.

The music series examines the root of Korean music while introducing new artists. The Barberettes doo wop trio sings 1950s and ’60s pop music, and are the first act in the series.

You can see the show at the Toronto Centre for the Arts in the Studio Theatre at 5040 Yonge St. on Saturday, March 14 at 7 p.m.

North York Concert Orchestra hosts its celebration of spring Saturday, March 21 at 8 p.m.

Theatre 20 picks up awards for ‘Company’ The artistic director of recently awarded Theatre 20 said the music theatre company doesn’t put on shows for accolades, but it is sweet when they come from peers.

The North York organization picked up four Broadway World Awards for its production of Company, which ran last summer.

“Any award is terrific. It’s a recognition of the work you’re doing,” David Keeley said.

“But, we don’t do it for

awards. I don’t sit around thinking, let’s do this show because we can win 10 awards. We do a show because it’s something we either have an invested passion for, or the piece is challenging, or it’s beautiful, or it’s funny, or whatever.”

He added that awards give a group recognition, a confidence boost and help put its name out in the community, and it’s especially satisfying when it comes from their peers, such as the Broadway

World Awards.

Theatre 20’s Company picked up the award for best ensemble cast; Emily Porter picked up the award for best original sound design; Nia Vardalos for best performance by a female in a featured role in a musical; and Brent Carver for best performance by a male in a featured role in a musical.

Fourth season playing hockey a winner for North York school >>>from page 1 why his elementary school didn’t have a hockey team during a parent-teacher interview four years ago when he was 10 years old.

“I’m very surprised actually,” he said.

Now 14, Brenden has since graduated from the Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue area elementary school. But he remembered his time fondly with the Glen Park Wolf Pack team as he enjoyed teaching his peers basic hockey skills.

This past season, the Wolf Pack had enough players to form two teams, which included Brenden’s younger sister Hannah-Marea Kennedy and fellow teammate Oleg Yurchenko, who’s played with the team since it started in

“It was very fun,” said Oleg, who noticed how much he’s improved playing hockey in the past four seasons. “And I made some friends on the team,” Hannah-Marea agreed.

Brenden and HannahMarea’s father Colin Kennedy, who is a volunteer coach, said it was truly amazing to see the dedication of the students to

play hockey and come out to practices.

Many were playing for the very first time, said Kennedy, adding all the equipment needed to play was donated from such organizations as KidSport Canada.

In addition to holding the Winter Classic Outdoor Hockey event with three games scheduled, a raffle was held to raise money for the Hyundai Hockey Helpers Program, which provides grants so more kids can play organized hockey.

Karl Subban (father of Montreal Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban) and Canadian National women’s ice hockey players Christine Kessler and Sami Jo Small were also in attendance to lend their support.
