Canada’s 149th birthday will be celebrated across the city Friday, July 1, including in North York. Festivities at Mel Lastman Square will run from 5 to 10:30 p.m. on Yonge Street, north of Sheppard Avenue. Pop-up performances by Turbo Street Funk, Illuminair Entertainment, and Lisa Odjig will take place from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by funk band The Soul Motivators at 8:15 p.m. Juno nominated hip-hop artist Emmanual Jal will perform at 9:15 p.m. followed by fireworks at 10:15 p.m. Amesbury Park, 1507 Lawrence Ave., will celebrate Canada Day starting at 11 a.m. and concluding with a fireworks display at 9:45 p.m. The day will include children’s activities, strongman, strongwoman, and body building competitions. An old style community picnic will be held at Broadlands Community Centre and park, 19 Castlegrove Blvd., from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Activities will include face painting, games, clowns, and entertainers.
