Baycrest graduates first seniors from on-site Ryerson program Oldest and most outspoken student Eva Kurtzman, 91, chosen as valedictorian fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com As names were called out, the graduates slowly made their way to the front of the Winter Court Garden – all using walkers or wheelchairs – to receive their diplomas and have photos taken by proud family members or staff at Baycrest Health Sciences.

Some 70 seniors, ranging in age from 60 to 91, were honoured during a ‘graduation’ ceremony at the Bathurst Street and Hwy. 401 area campus Tuesday. The honourees took part in a free program held in partnership with Programs for 50+ at The G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education

at Ryerson University, in conjunction with Baycrest Learning Academy, an ongoing program aimed at providing enhanced learning opportunities for older adults. Courses are taught on the Baycrest campus and offered to seniors aged 60 years and older.

A pilot program beginning in 2012, it quickly expanded and Tuesday marked the program’s first graduation ceremony. The program was set up like a typical post-secondary course year, consisting of one semester from September to December and a second from January to April. Instructors from Ryerson attended Baycrest for an hour once a week and offered four to six programs a term, including

art history, music, fashion, literature, archaeology, neuroscience, and astronomy.

Lectures were given on these topics, but no tests or exams were written.

Eva Kurtzman, this year’s valedictorian (chosen because she was the oldest student and one of the most outspoken), praised Baycrest for going that “extra mile” in giving patients learning experiences.

“I myself have learned a lot from the courses,” the 91-year-old said in her speech.

“I knew absolutely nothing about art before. As the saying goes, you’re never too old to learn.”

Rosalin Krieger, who lectured on art history, called her time at Baycrest the most rewarding of her career.

“I’ve never had students who were more grateful for my efforts,” she said.

Jordan Klapman, who taught the Baycrest students about music, called it an “extraordinary” place to lecture.

“I was surprised how much they knew,” he said. “I would play a song on the piano, and they would remember it from years ago and it would take them back to that time.”

n Friday, July 1, we Canadians pause to celebrate another year as just that: Canadians.

We have been able to do that for 149 years now, and let’s be honest: it feels good.

We’re a good country, after all.

We look after each other, and try to extend that compassion abroad.

We have bad days – who doesn’t? – but on balance we’ve lived our 149 years well, and we look pretty good for our age.

The same can’t be said for the rest of our family of nations, and it’s tempting to feel smug about that.

The vote to leave was decisive but not universally so, and now the U.K. is on the verge of fragmentation, with Scotland poised to hold another independence referendum, not two years after it narrowly voted to remain in the U.K. This time, with EU membership in the balance, polls indicate the Scots might well succeed.

We in Canada have flirted with this sort of thing in the past, through two nail-biting referendums in Quebec, each of which might have put us in a similar place: a country split at the seam, where nativism and nationalist intransigence make dissolution seem inevitable.

Good for us that we didn’t take the plunge. We’re still here, in one piece, with the capacity to engage ourselves and the world as proud Canadians.

Let’s be proud, then: proud, but not smug.

It is unlikely-to-impossible that separatists in Quebec could marshal support for another referendum any time soon – the Parti Quebecois has yet to find a leader, and in any case will not be in a position to govern until the fall of 2018, when the next provincial election is scheduled.

But it is a point for sober reflection this Canada Day, just how precious is our unity and civility, and how easy it is for a nation – any nation, even our own – to allow that to slip away.

Mayor Tory’s op-ed column stirs controversy You can get into a lot of trouble, writing a column for a newspaper.

Even if you’re a professional, it can be hazardous: sticky fingers for other people’s ideas and phrases will (or should) sink you; you can get facts wrong, or get caught making it up, which should and does sink you.

Or, like this columnist, you can realize a couple of days after you tried to link Brexit with spurious transit plans and bad public finance, that you may have just overreached – in which case you’ll get called on it, often on Twitter. And that stuff never goes away.

It’s worse when you’re not a professional. Worse still, when you’re not a professional who has skin in the game.

And so we come to Mayor John Tory, who tried his hand writing a column for a newspaper, The Toronto Star, on Tuesday: a column about his besieged $3 billion Scarborough subway plan, on the eve

david nickle the city of its debut on the floor of Tuesday’s Executive Committee.

It was a substantial piece in the Toronto Star, just a hair over 800 words long, and for most of those words it chugs along well, noting that he ran in 2014 promising to build a subway in Scarborough, that we are behind on transit construction, that there’s political consensus between the three levels of government that the subway’s the way to go, and that city staff have said the Scarborough subway could help boost ridership in a part of the city where it’s currently low.

So far, Tory has penned a good and boring op-ed.

It gets troublesome when he goes for what some of us professionals might call “the dig”: that part where you try and nail down just what’s wrong with the thing

we’re critiquing.

Writes Tory (at about the 600 word mark): “But many of the subway’s loudest critics do not live or work in Scarborough, where more than half the population is born outside of Canada. When they say this is too much to spend on a subway, the inference seems to be that it’s too much to spend on this part of the city.”

Oh dear. It’s hard, indeed impossible, to not parse that down to a particularly ugly accusation – that those who fancy a light rail network in Scarborough and not a subway are anti-Scarborough nativists. Indeed, at least one of Tory’s colleagues on council, the subway-opposing, lightrail-loving Josh Matlow, parsed things exactly that way.

“Sad, desperate and shameful. I had hoped for much more from a mayor who preached civility,” tweeted Matlow.

This is the kind of trouble

that isn’t really very much trouble at all for professionals. We’re used to people crossing the street to avoid us after a particularly vigorous application of fair comment on their dealings. It goes with the territory.

For a mayor, who’s built his brand on civility and team-work as Tory has?

Both Tory and his office tried to make it clear that the column wasn’t intended to be divisive, but to point out that Scarborough’s poorly served by transit. They weren’t out of line: Josh Matlow was out of line.

It was too late by then.

It is one thing that those of us writing columns for the newspapers learn early: there are no take-backs when you write something, however unintentionally it may have been, that makes you look a bit of a jerk.

Bannockburn School land won’t be sold JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com Residents in North Toronto and North York can breathe easier knowing a 2.13acre green space at the Bannockburn School that had been slated to be sold off is safe.

The space, at 12 Bannockburn Avenue near Avenue Road and Wilson Road, was declared “surplus” and severed from the remainder of the five-acre school property in 2013. It was added to a list of properties for sale by the Toronto Lands

Corporation, to the chagrin of residents in the area, who feared they would lose one of the few large green spaces in the immediate area.

On Wednesday, June 22, the TDSB voted to remove Bannockburn from its list of surplus properties, ensuring it would remain public land.

Jennifer Arp, the TDSB trustee for Eglinton-Lawrence, noted the space was preserved due to both the public’s spirited efforts to save it and the fact the school site will be needed in the future.

“It’s the only site we have left to deal with any overflow

from the Yonge corridor,” she said.

Trish McMahon, one of the parents who spoke out vociferously against selling off the Bannockburn land, said the green space was well-used in the community.

All successful candidates will attend orientation and training session The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) has begun its call for CNE ambassadors for the 2016 season.

Now in its 16th consecutive year, “Friends of the CNE” is a community initiative that has engaged more than 2,000 youth and adults, who have contributed nearly 63,000 hours of service.

CNE volunteers assist with various roles and duties including greeting guests, providing directional assistance, acting as tour guides and supporting special events and programming.

“Volunteers are at the heart of the Fair, and play an integral role in making the CNE a

positive experience for all our guests,” Virginia Ludy, General Manager of the CNE, said in a press release.

“The Friends of the CNE program is a great opportunity for youth, and those who are young at heart, to apply their skills and gain valuable experience in a unique and exciting environment; and for others, it’s the fulfillment of community involvement and personal enrichment.”

The Friends of the CNE enlists more than 100 volunteers each year and more than 80 per cent of those volunteers are between the ages of 14 and 17. Ontario secondary school students can earn credits

toward community service hours.

Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and must be able to commit to a minimum of six shifts, at four hours each.

Applications are open to all, but the CNE will give preference to those volunteers who can work evening shifts, between 5 and 8 p.m.

Downtown lanes a ‘game changer’ as Toronto’s bicycle network expands

weLIKE toBIKE DAVID NICKLE dnickle@insidetoronto.com In 1991, 15-year-old Yvonne Bambrick rode the streets of Toronto with brash confidence – making the considerable daily commute from her family home at Victoria Park in East York to Jarvis Collegiate by bicycle, along busy downtown streets that made scant accommodation for bikes.

“Back when I was a naive teenager, I didn’t think twice about it,” recalls Bambrick 25 years later, sitting on a sunny patio in Kensington Market, steps from one of the city’s massive on-street bike racks and just over a block from the busy College Street bike lanes.

“The concept of bike lanes wasn’t on my brain at all. I did know it wasn’t safe – I got

There are 558.4 total lane kilometres of on-street cycling infrastructure. Here is the breakdown:

In 2016, the Toronto that Bambrick bikes around is a much safer place. Toronto has a total of 558.4 kilometres of on-street bike lanes, including white bicycle lanes, contraflow lanes that run against the flow of traffic, so-called “sharrows”, signed routes without pavement markings, and even a few kilometres of cycle tracks that are fully separated from traffic.

A lot of people use those lanes. According to the 2006 Census, Torontonians bike to and from work like nobody else in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, with 19,780 commuting by bike compared to 14,925 in 2001.

In 2015, Bambrick published a book for those cyclists: The Urban Cycling Survival Guide: Need To Know Skills and Strategies for Biking in the City. It was a book culled from her work

advocating for cyclists as the head of the Toronto Cyclist’s Union – now Cycle Toronto – and her years riding Toronto’s sometimes tricky streets.

There’s a lot to know: how to make a safe left turn (there’s more than one way); how to suit up for cycling in bad weather; dealing with potentially hostile interactions; and how to navigate all those different styles of bike road infrastructure.

Currently, most of those routes are in neighbourhoods surrounding the downtown core – including the relatively new cycle tracks on Sherbourne, Adelaide and Richmond streets.

“Richmond-Adelaide were a game changer,” says Bambrick. “I was having to ride there all the time (before), and I’m a confident rider but even for me it was tough. This is amazing.

Transformative.”

Bambrick and other cycling advocates are hoping for more change like that, on roads that extend beyond the downtown.

This summer, the city will be embarking on a pilot project to try a cycle track along Bloor Street through the Annex neighbourhood – a test, to see whether a city-spanning track could be installed the length of Bloor Street and

Danforth Avenue.

And the outcome of that could determine the implementation of parts of the city’s next big plan for cycling expansion: the Cycling Network 10 Year Plan. Under that plan, Toronto’s bikeway and bike trail network would be extended to the ends of the city: north along Yonge Street to Steeles Avenue; on Kingston Road in Scarborough from Eglinton Avenue to the Highland Creek Trail; Kipling Avenue from Bloor Street to the Waterfront Trail; and Midland Avenue, from Steeles to Lawrence avenues.

Toronto’s Chief Planner Jennifer Keesmaat said to provide an effective cycling alternative, the network needs to expand in the same way that transit networks expand – in a continuum. Do that, she says, and it becomes viable to commute, at least to downtown, from nearly anywhere in the city.

“With cycling, distance isn’t that much of a problem,” says Keesmaat.

“The city is really not that big, and 10 kilometres, 20 kilometres isn’t really a big deal. And from the centre of the city you can get pretty much anywhere on a 10 kilometer bikeway. If you’re cycling from Scarborough to

Etobicoke, that’s a big trip.

But from the centre of the city you can get anywhere – all you need is safe infrastructure.”

The other thing that a cyclist needs, of course, is the will, and a bit of know-how.

Bambrick is an evangelist for the former and a resource for the latter.

When asked what it takes to get on a bike, after dutifully recommending a careful read of her book, she suggests a step-by-step approach.

Borrow a bike-share bike; go riding with a friend on a quiet street.

If it’s been awhile, take a BikeShare course.

And remember: roads were originally for bikes.

“We paved our roads because wheelmen’s clubs advocated to get the roads paved. The bicycling movement has been around for a long time,” says Bambrick.

“It’s never gone away.”

Aga Khan Museum to showcase exhibit

by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza The work of Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza will be showcased in a new exhibit at Aga Khan Museum.

Opening Saturday, July 23 at 77 Wynford Dr., the exhibit, titled Álvaro Siza: Gateway to the Alhambra, explores the creative process behind one of Siza’s latest projects, the Alhambra’s new Visitor Centre in Granada, Spain.

“The Alhambra is the site of the last great Muslim civilization on the Iberian peninsula, inspiring countless artists and architects,” Henry Kim, director and CEO of the museum, said in a release.

“With his vision for Puerta Nueva, Siza does the seemingly impossible: encompass the history of the Alhambra and achieve a timeless design. Only an architect of Siza’s stature could take on such a feat.”

Through sketches, renderings, models, videos, and interviews, the exhibition explores how Siza was simultaneously inspired and challenged by the Alhambra, a site which grew from a modest 9th-century fortress to a luxurious palace complex and citadel five centuries later.

What is the Crosstown?

The Eglinton Crosstown is a 19-kilometre light rail transit (LRT) line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with a 10-kilometre underground tunnel in its central section. Eglinton Avenue West Road Closure, July 8 to July 11, 2016 What?

From July 8 to July 11, 2016 Eglinton Avenue West will be closed from east of Everden Road to Westover Hill Road for road deck maintenance.

As part of the general maintenance, crews will be resurfacing the road deck surface over the existing launch shaft between east of Everden Road and Westover Hill Road. There will be no access to Allen Road from the east side of the expressway.

When?

Friday, July 8 to Monday, July 11 (10 p.m. on Friday to 5 a.m. on Monday) Some work will be performed during overnight hours.

Work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect A mild odour and some noise may be noticeable with this work. A tent will be installed around the work area to maintain a consistent temperature and protect from possible inclement weather.

Traffic Details The northbound Allen Road ramp will not be accessible from westbound Eglinton Avenue West. The northbound on-ramp can be accessed by travelling east along Eglinton Avenue West.

Vehicles exiting Allen Road must turn right (westbound) or continue onto Everden Rd (southbound).

Residential side streets east of the Allen Road, between Westover Hill Road and Bathurst Street, will be posted for local access only.

Additional fencing and barriers will be put in place at key locations to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians throughout the weekend work. Advance signage advising of the road closures will be posted to provide drivers’ notice of the specific road closures.

Paid Duty Officers (PDOs) will be on-site to assist.

Pedestrian Details There will be no change to the current pedestrian walkways already in use.

Transit Users TTC Subway service at Eglinton West Station will not be impacted.

32 Eglinton and 332 Eglinton Night bus routes There will be an increase in bus volume along existing routes in the area as buses will be diverted both ways via: Eglinton Avenue, Bathurst Street, Glencairn Avenue, Marlee Avenue and Eglinton Avenue. Sunnybrook introduces Smilezones fannie sunshine fsunshine@insidetoronto.com Colourful animal and naturethemed murals hang on brightly painted walls, coupled with iPad stations and comfortable seating to make up 12 new Smilezones recently unveiled at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for its young patients.

Created over a weekend earlier this month in the department of family and community medicine, the official ribbon cutting was held last week with Juno Award winner Tom Cochrane in attendance.

Twelve meeting rooms, waiting areas, and examination rooms - each considered a zone - were transformed into Smilezones to help entertain youngsters as they wait for check-ups or immunization shots, said Judith Manson, patient care manager of Sunnybrook’s academic family health team.

The project at Sunnybrook is Smilezone’s 15th facility in Ontario, with 68 completed zones to date. The charity plans to expand across Canada next year.

Biddersingh was found guilty of first-degree murder in Melonie’s death in January and Elaine Biddersingh was found guilty of second-degree murder on June 20 – one concerned citizen opted to start the Dwayne & Melonie Memorial Fund to benefit Boost Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.

“A Toronto woman became aware of the case and got more and more invested in it the more she learned,” said Boost spokesperson Lindsay Jolie. “She got in touch with the family (including Melonie and Dwayne’s birth mother, Opal Austin) who are living in Jamaica but came up here to testify in court (in the cases against the father and stepmother.)

“This memorial fund will make sure Melonie’s not just ‘the girl in the suitcase.’”

More than two decades after her tragic death, the teen who was known to many as the “Suitcase Girl” is being remembered with the creation of a fund in her name.

Melonie Biddersingh, who was 17 when she died, was starved, beaten and tortured over a lengthy period of time by her father, Everton Biddersingh and stepmother Elaine. After her body was found in a burning suitcase on Sept. 1, 1994, an autopsy revealed she had suffered several fractures and was severely malnourished, weighing a mere 50 pounds.

Her death came two years after her brother, Dwayne, plummeted to his death from the balcony of the Biddersinghs’ Toronto apartment at age 13.

Students mourn classmate’s death, killed on Hwy. 400 CYNTHIA REASON creason@insidetoronto.com Instead of celebrating the start of summer vacation this week, kindergartners at Princess Margaret Junior School spent their last three days of school mourning the tragic loss of a “beautiful, active little girl who loved life.”

Five-year-old Isabela Kuci died last Friday when the car she was traveling in with her mother Valbona Vokshi, 35, and grandmother Xhemile Vokshi, 55, was involved in a fiery, 11-vehicle pile-up on Hwy. 400.

While OPP had not yet officially released the names of the collision’s four fatalities as of Wednesday, close family friend Katerina Seitaj confirmed to The Mirror that the three generations of the Etobicoke family were among those killed.

said of her close connection with the family.

“Isabela was always happy, always smiling. She was just a happy child who loved her mom, loved her friends, loved school.”

Students and staff at the central Etobicoke school Isabela loved so much in life were grieving the little girl’s death this week.

“The kids are really missing her today,” Isabela’s kindergarten teacher, Sarah Harwood, told The Mirror

in an interview at Princess Margaret JS Tuesday morning.

“They’re really feeling sad today, so one of the things we’re talking about is how we as a group can kind of heal and support each other.”

Many students in Isabela’s class, Harwood said, are coping with their grief over the loss of their always-smiling, ever-pigtailed classmate by turning to art.

intended for Isabela’s family on which she inscribed ‘I’m sorry that Isabela is not with you anymore.’ She later added blue angel wings and stickers to her heartfelt offering.

Close classmate Noah, meanwhile, simply wrote ‘I love you Isabela’ on plain white paper, then added lots of Isabela’s favourite stickers – butterflies and Frozen characters – to add a bit of colour to his creation in her honour.

“They spent a lot of time

thinking of Isabela’s favourite colours, the things she liked, then made these while thinking of her,” Harwood said, pointing to an array of colourful, heart-adorned condolence messages and cards for Isabela’s family on display in the office at Princess Margaret JS. “(This art project) is really helping them kind of deal with their grief today.”

Also helping the children cope is a team of three social workers, who were called in to the school on Monday and were expected remain on hand at Princess Margaret until the last day of school on Wednesday, said Toronto District School Board spokesperson Shari SchwartzMaltz.

Despite their sadness, however, Harwood said she and her students are trying their best to ensure they honour Isabela by remembering her as the fun-loving little girl she always was in life.

“She was happy, laughing, smiling all the time. And she talked to everybody. Everyone

was her friend,” Harwood said.

“She’d walk through the hallways and just wave and say hi to everyone she passed. She was very loving.”

To help support her good friend Valbona’s family through their loss, Seitaj has established a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of raising $50,000 towards their expenses.

There’s no words to describe how they’re feeling right now,” she said, noting that Valbona’s sister was also involved in the Hwy. 400 collision last Friday night, but was traveling in a separate vehicle with her two-year-old son.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP’s Highway Safety Division said Tuesday that no charges have yet been laid in connection with the fatal collision, which also reportedly claimed the life of Seneca College student Maria Lipska, 27.

Families seeking treatment for a child’s autism will see reduced wait times and increased transitional funding for children moving from the existing intensive therapy to the province’s new Applied Behavioural Analysis service, as the Ontario government has announced $200 million in restored funding.

Newly-appointed Minister of Children and Youth Services Michael Coteau made the announcement at Queen’s Park on Tuesday morning — effectively undoing many of the shortcomings of the government’s $333 million five-year overhaul of the province’s autism program.

That program, announced in March, was to have begun in 2018 and would have left as many as 2,200 families uncertain as to how they would manage treatment for their children in the transition.

The $200 million will, said Coteau, ensure that all children diagnosed with autism in Ontario will receive appropriate treatment, without a gap that families will have to pay for out of pocket.

“Every single child will receive the services that they

need, period,” said Coteau.

“If a child needs intensive programming they will receive that programming.

The most important piece here is that every single family goes through assessment and will get the amount of programming that they require.”

The reforms announced by Coteau will also allow supports for children five years and over who were previously on the intensive behavioural analysis (ABA) wait list. That funding has increased to $10,000 for 10 weeks, from the previously-announced $8,000. earlier access And the Ontario program will be instituted sooner — in June 2017, a full year ahead of the previously-announced plan aimed at 2018.

“A two-year transition period is too long for families waiting for services,” said Coteau.

“So we’re cutting the implementation plan in half.

It will now begin in June 2017, which means every child with an autism diagnosis will have access sooner regardless of age.”

Monique Taylor (Hamilton Mountain) was a critic of the government’s previous policy, and credited the pressure that parents of autistic children put on the government following the March announcement.

She said she was disappointed that Coteau didn’t apologize to those parents.

“I’m surprised because of the crisis and chaos that they have put them through for three months,” said Taylor, who nevertheless said that the announcement was welcome, if it rolls out as advertised.

In the meantime, parents and advocates were pleased with the news.

“I’m beyond ecstatic, this is a long time in coming,” said advocate Gal Geller, attending the announcement with other parents.

“Minister Coteau is doing right by the children. Our parents have been unreal advocates. It’s phenomenal.”

Bike Share Toronto has begun a promised expansion of its operations, adding 120 new stations and 1,000 more bikes.

The agency first announced in April it was purchasing the new infrastructure from Montreal-based PBSC Solutions, which ran the bike share originally called Bixi. This boost to its offerings effectively doubles the amount of bikes available for short-term rentals.

The purchase comes from a near $5-million funding arrangement with Metrolinx announced in 2015.

The new rides are expected to be available by July 11.

It’s doubtful this delay will much impact the timeline since electrification won’t likely be done until 2024.

Future Possibilities for Kids program improving city neighbourhoods Young participants Josh and Abigail Dunbar lobbying for Jane and Finch area playground JUSTIN SKINNER jskinner@insidetoronto.com For the past 15 years, Future Possibilities for Kids (FPK) has helped thousands of kids in underserved neighbourhoods throughout the GTA find their voices.

With the coaching, leadership training and empowerment those kids get, they have gone on to improve the lives of countless others.

The midtown Torontobased not-for-profit has run programs in neighbourhoods such as Jane and Finch, east Scarborough and Richmond Hill, with an eye to expanding to three new locations by 2020.

“Our core program is about reaching kids aged nine to 12 and giving them the tools they need to believe they can make a difference,” said FPK executive director Rickesh Lakhani.

“Each kid picks something that matters to them and that makes a difference in their community.”

The program’s impact is evident through the stories of participants such as Josh and Abigail Dunbar. Living in the Jane and Finch community, the two youngsters were upset by the lack of safe public space where kids could play.

With the lessons they learned through FPK, they

started a movement to build a playground on a vacant lot next to a Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) building in the area, collecting hundreds of names on a petition and writing to everyone from the housing corporation to Premier Kathleen Wynne, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, several government ministers and school trustees.

“It doesn’t really matter if it’s there (on the vacant lot next to the TCHC building) or somewhere else, but it has to be in the Jane and Finch area,” said nine-year-old Josh.

Their hard work could pay off; they got a positive response from Wynne’s office and secured a meeting with TCHC. “We told them what we we’ve been doing to get this to happen, how we really want this to happen and how it’s been our dream for a couple of years,” said Abigail, 10.

The initiative shown by Josh and Abigail was nothing short of incredible for their mother, Carlis, and their determination was all the more impressive given their first community action ideas were turned down.

Initially, Abigail wanted to raise funds for her dance studio or a new laptop for her school and Josh wanted to raise money for gym equip-

ment for his school.

“FPK said they couldn’t do anything where they asked for money, so Josh said ‘what about a place to play?’” Carlis recalled. “It was so amazing to see them in action, writing letters to 19 community leaders.”

Former FPK member Komal Abbasi, who recently returned to serve as a coach for the organization, said the program was an immense help on her road to success.

“The biggest thing I got from the program was a boost in confidence,” she said.

“I was a very shy kid and I didn’t focus much in school.

It helped me feel more motivated so my grades went up, and in Grade 8, I got my school’s science award and even ran for vice-president of my school council.”

FPK recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with the launch of its Leadership Amplified initiative, which will see it open in three new locations, including a return to Regent Park and new sites in west Scarborough and west Markham.

“The goal of Leadership Amplified is to expand our program, help more kids and make sure that while they’re on their journeys, they involve and inspire at least 15 other people,” Lakhani said.
