New student orientation undergoes changes Moe Daniels REPORTER

For the past nine years NKU has done Northern Exposure or orientation, as some may say, relatively the same. This year, Northern Exposure will undergo changes in the hopes of benefiting prospective NKU students.

Jennie LaMothe, director of New Student Orientation and Parents Programs at NKU, was on the committee of NKU staff that developed the new model of orientation.

“We are excited that this restructure allows our deans and faculty to have a higher level of involvement with our programs,” LaMothe said.

Past orientations

For the last nine years orientation has consisted of 10-12, two-day, mandatory, overnight orientations for new students. Around 300 students and 200 parents/guests attended each orientation.

What is changing?

This year’s orientations will consist of 11 one-day registration days.

“That is going to be one of the hardest things I think for the campus, specifically people who are involved across campus with orientation, is to change the language,” LaMothe said.

In previous years, orientation has been called Northern Exposure, which will stay the same but will include the registration days followed by the extended three-day orientation in August.

LaMothe believes the big change is that parents and students will be completely separated for the entire registration day. This will be helpful for first generation parents sending

their children off to college to have their own support network of other parents to interact with.

The parents will hear from administrators, deans and faculty throughout their day.

The students will be with their orientation leaders and will hear from speakers such as the Dean of Students, advisers, associate deans and other faculty. Students will use this day to register for fall classes.

“I think it will be a bit of a culture shock, especially for parents who have had students come here before,” LaMothe said.

The three-day orientation

There will be an extended three-day orientation on Aug. 13, 14 and 15 prior to classes starting, where students will spend overnight in the dorms. Freshmen will move in the Thursday before classes begin. Commuter and residential students will separate and attend mandatory meetings, following Convocation and dinner.

During the three days, there will be mandatory events for freshman to attend but the evenings will be left for social events.

The overall experience will be different from past years since students will be spending this time together rather than in smaller 200-300 student groups used in the two-day orientations.

“Students come here because of that small feel and that small classroom size,” LaMothe said. “If we have 2,200 students, I don’t want it to feel like they[‘ve] all of a sudden gone to UK, so it’s still important for them to have those small groups.”

This year, 34 orientation leaders were hired to take prospective freshmen through this process. At the three-day orientation, this large group of students will be broken into 85 small

groups of 25 students. The orientation staff is looking for 140 more students to help with the three-day orientation experience, including upperclassmen and student-athletes, according to LaMothe.

The orientation leaders

Many consider orientation leaders to be the heart of orientation. This year NKU hired around 10 more orientation leaders than last year. The Orientation Leaders are being led this year by two female leaders, Megan Pickett and Sydney Groshong.

The orientation leaders take a class that covers orientation. Britta Gibson, associate director of New Student Orientation teaches a class, with Coordinator of New Student Orientation Jeff Iker, for new the orientation leaders Gibson said that during class, the orientation leaders complete 120 internship hours and also receive one college credit.

The class meets for eight weeks and the orientation leaders must complete office hours to help prepare for orientation.

The orientation leaders are known for forming a family-like bond during the summer.

They attend two retreats during their time together. LaMothe stated that the pre-summer retreat helps them understand each other’s strengths, weaknesses. They also attend a mid-summer retreat. “If you work that close everyday, for that many hours, you start getting on each others nerves. This retreat brings them back together and reminds them why they are here to do this,” LaMothe said.

Senior Brittany Gragg joined the orientation leader staff for summer 2015 and has wanted to be an organizational leader since she started her college career at NKU. “I do think it is going to go better than

past orientations just because students complained that they had to stay overnight and there would be issues, like if there was alcohol, serious stuff that could get them in trouble. I am so excited for the summer though. I can’t wait to get to know everyone, and leave my legacy at NKU,” Gragg said.

Matthew Werner served as an orientation leader in 2012, prior to the orientation changes.

“I think first off, students will not be as overwhelmed. Secondly, it will build more school spirit and more connections and thirdly, it gives more students the opportunity to help out at orientation,” he said.

Ellie Kremer never thought she would end up at NKU. The junior international studies and anthropology major attended a high school just 20 minutes away and viewed the university as a last resort when she applied to colleges. Now a presidential candidate in this year’s race, Kremer, alongside Vice Presidential Candidate Hannah French, wants students to fall in love with the campus as much as she did.

At the top of her to-do list is an initiative to expand the Road to NKU tour to area high schools to increase enrollment. Kremer believes

NKU can’t count on their current reputation at local schools to bring in more freshman.

“I don’t think we have a good relationship with the students at these schools, though we might have good relationship with schools,” Kremer said.

Kremer and French want to strengthen the community feel of NKU to attract commuter and residential students alike. If elected, the two want to work more closely with the Activities Programming Board to plan more events such as concerts and start NKU traditions.

“We want NKU to be a home away from home for people who live here and people who don’t and that’s something we think is lacking

right now,” French said.

A large part of instilling a sense of community is building connections among students, according to Kremer. She and French want to connect more people to organizations, particularly commuter students who may feel disconnected from the university.

“There’s a student on this campus that loves photography and goes from their car to their class back to their car every day wishing that they had friends that also love photography and who doesn’t know that there is a photography club,” Kremer said.

Kremer and French also want a build an alumni community that is still involved, a group that they say is almost nonexistent.

“We both worked for NKU phone-a-thon last year and called alumni and we found that most alumni do not really care,” French said. “I think the first step of having alumni wanting to stay involved at NKU is getting collegiate students to love NKU from the get go.”

Kremer said making the university more inclusive goes hand-in-hand with creating a community. She and French plan to strengthen current offices in student affairs while also creating a new ones.

“I’ve been working with Bonnie Meyer [director of LGBTQ Services] on a type of women’s center. We don’t want to call it a women’s center, but an office that would serve women.

We would work a lot with the Green Dot and Norse Violence Prevention,” Kremer said.

She said she would utilize connections in Frankfort from an internship with Senator Webb and lobbying experience to continue the push for outcomes-based funding.

French has little lobbying experience but said she is eager to learn.

“We are the most underappreciated school in Kentucky and that is something that we don’t want to continue happening,” French said. “If we need to go lobby, we need to do the most we can

to provide for NKU and their students.”

Building an awareness about the need for state funding and educating students will be key, according to Kremer. She plans to communicate with students about current issues as well as listen to student needs.

“I want to continue what John [ Jose] and Kat [Hahnel] started and go to the organizations and see what they need help with,” Kremer said. “We can’t say we’re going to help them if we don’t know what their problems are.”

French said she and Kremer want to come up with resolutions that people have never heard of or work on problems that have never been brought to SGA’s attention before.

“There’s a difference between hearing someone and actually actively listening to someone and I feel like that’s what were going to focus on is actually implementing things that people can utilize,” French said.

Kremer and French plan to tackle student uncertainties about professors or classes with a public course evaluation on NKU’s website.

“It’ll be like a rate my professor type thing, but for the university so that you don’t have to go to a third-party source, you can see from students that went here and see what they say about different professors and classes,” Kremer said.

She believes that knowledge about the professors and classes available from actual students will help others find the class that’s right for them. French thinks more students will actually fill out their course evaluations for this reason and that the evaluations will become a valuable resource.

Kremer and French said they are looking forward to the possibility of serving the student body.

“We want them to feel welcome and we want to give them opportunities they can grasp,” French said. “I feel like its a give and take, but we need to put those opportunities out there for people to take them.”

Kat Hahnel loves budgets. The junior vocal performance and accounting double major is proud of the recent spending cuts and allocations she’s made to student government’s budget as vice president and is confident she can handle the demands of another year of expenses. In fact, she’s actually looking forward to it.

“We actually didn’t use all of our money this year that we got because I’m a very conservative person when It comes to money,” Hahnel said.

“It’s the accountant in me.”

This year she’s asked for less money for SGA than ever before in an effort to give funds back to the Legacy Fund for the growing amount of student organizations on campus. Hahnel, alongside her vice presidential candidate, junior entrepreneurship and economics double major Will Weber, believe they can provide all of the same services, sponsor SGA’s usual events and also continue SGA scholarships with their conservative budgeting methods.

The running mates are also concerned about NKU’s budget. Hahnel believes her lobbying experience and Weber’s internship with NKU’s liaison to the Kentucky General Assembly and Congress Joe Wind will help them push for outcomes-based funding next year.

“Next year is going to be budget year and whoever is in charge is going to need to know about the budget, is going to need to know how to talk about it and how to get in the Governor’s ear,” Hahnel said.

Hahnel plans to join forces with others in

the Board of Student Body Presidents at other public universities in Kentucky on the funding issue. She believes this will be more effective than lobbying efforts in the past.

Hahnel and Weber want to take an individualized approach to inclusive excellence next year.

“I think that the [gender-inclusive] restroom resolution was great… it was something that needed to happen, but I think also if we make individual students feel that they are included in everything then overall you’re going to have more inclusive student body,” Hahnel said.

Talking to other students about their dayto-day life as a student and any problems they encounter is the first step towards building a more inclusive student body and morale, according to Weber.

“It’s giving students a voice and strengthening that voice of those who don’t really speak up as much or don’t really have the numbers to say, ‘You know, this is a problem,’ or ‘I don’t really know’ or ‘I don’t feel comfortable with this,’” Weber said. “Student government represents 16,000 students and that means that every one of them is included. It’s about you.”

One demographic of students that Hahnel and Weber plan to help better include are older residential students.

“We don’t embrace older students living on campus,” Hahnel said. “We kind of make them feel like they have to get off campus if they want to be an adult.”

The two want to begin working on bringing upper division housing to NKU — an idea that was discussed among the administration a few

years ago but never implemented.

“I remember sitting in [Freshman Service Leadership Committee] my freshman year being talked to about upper division housing and us getting that in time for our senior year,” Hahnel said. “It was in the administration’s mind, the provost was behind it, but then the provost left and when it just came down to it, there were no students pushing for it.”

After the growth University Housing has experienced in recent years, Weber now believes it is time to implement housing for upperclassmen.

“We’ve heard a lot of concerns from students who are 21 and older who don’t necessarily feel as comfortable living with students in the dorms who are younger,” Weber said. “We feel there is a need for that and that for students who go off campus to live, if they can stay on campus, that keeps that community here but still caters to them in some way.”

Hahnel and Weber also want to plan for a future with Greek housing.

“The Greek life population is continuing to grow more and more every year so that’s a huge amount of students there that have a need for something,” Weber said. “Comparable institutions, and I would venture to say local Division I schools, offer Greek housing.”

He also believes Greek housing could even start a shift in NKU becoming less of a commuter campus and more of a place where students want to live. According to Weber, if Greek students currently living in university dorms moved to Greek housing, it would open up even more space for students to move in, growing the

campus community.

Hahnel and Weber also want to grow the community through supporting continuing scholarships that will retain students at NKU. Weber dislikes the fact that many students take advantage of the university by taking inexpensive classes with an upfront scholarship, but don’t stick around to enjoy all of NKU’s benefits.

“I don’t like when people use my university, I kind of get a little irked on that,” Weber said. “If we are able to promote the current, continuing and transfer student scholarships that are offered and say, ‘Hey, you’re already here, why don’t you stay and apply for this scholarship?’ Then scholarships will keep people here.”

Outcomes-based funding would impact scholarships at all levels, according to Weber.

He believes scholarships would be more widely available on an individual basis, organizational basis through allocation funding, and to the whole institution if more state funding is supported. Weber also supports a cheaper graduate school tuition rate for students who attended NKU for their undergraduate degree.

Hahnel wants to change the perception of student government that the president and vice president are on top. Rather, the senators and student body contain all the power.

“I want to be so encouraging and for people to know that its not Kat’s goals it’s not my agenda, its not even e-boards agenda, it’s completely you,” Hahnel said. “If I have the honor of being president, e-board will not have any goals... because that is something that comes from the senators, it comes from the students.”

Views Editor gives his 10 favorite albums of the year 2014 Matt Spaulding ARTS & LIFE EDITOR

During one of the free hours I had over spring break, I began to file the new releases of 2014 into my collection and I started compiling and editing my list of favorites.

This is never an easy thing to do. What separates one great release from being ranked above another? Either way, here it is.

10. D’Angelo- ‘Black Messiah’ Obliterations have a reverence for old hardcore. It shows in the excitement and energy contained on this disc. They aren’t completely reinventing a genre with this release, but it sounds very fresh, contagious and absolutely has their own unique dirge to it. I spent countless hours banging my fist on the steering wheel to this in traffic. The slower Black Flag style numbers are a nice touch.

9. Sharon Van Etten‘Are We There’ She has a gorgeous voice that melts with the gorgeous melodies all over this record.

These folk indie inspired tunes of heartbreak will pull you in before you are even aware what’s happening. She has been on a roll since 2012’s “Tramp.”

8. Eyehategod- ‘Eyehategod’ New Orlean’s sludge legends return with their first album in 14 years. Despite the passing of original drummer Joey LaCaze, whose drumming is on the record, there is an energy and drive to this one. For any fan, this is a welcome addition to the Eyehategod catalog and possibly even a good place to start for those curious about the band.

7. Wovenhand‘Refractory Obdurate’ While Wovenhand is known for their creepy southern gothic brand of folk this release has some more driving distorted moments. It is full of David Eugene Edwards’ passionate fire and brimstone vocals. This is definitely one of their best albums in several years.

6.Merchandise‘After the End’

This is the first album I’ve bought by this group. A good friend of mine has been trying to get my into them for years, but it just didn’t happen until now. He is a smart man and I should have been listening to them years ago. Merchandise have a lot in common with Manchester groups of the 80s such as The Stone Roses. It has nice bittersweet quality to many of the songs like The Church too.

5. Obiliterations‘Poison Everything’

I had a difficult time placing this one on my list. I have only owned it for about a month and after spending some time with it I think it could have put it higher on the list. However, here it is. Maybe I’ll update this list later. I’ve gotten immersed with this album since picking it up. It has a sloppy almost lo-fi quality to it similar to Sly and the Family Stone’s “There’s a Riot Goin’ on.” This is getting a lot of talk currently, but deserves it.

4. Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires- ‘Dereconstructed’ Before I type a word about this record I have to say that anyone who hasn’t seen Lee Bains live must cancel any plans and travel any distance to make this happen. You will be ordering a PBR and singing along before the end of the first chorus. This is southern rock done intelligently and with barrels of passion and sincerity. Bains and the Glory Fires have been touring constantly. They played MOTR twice last year and are returning this April.

3. Bob Mould‘Beauty and Ruin’ This took several listens to grow on me despite being a huge fan of his solo work, Husker Du and Sugar. This definitely is the darker half of Mould’s return to guitar-oriented rock when compared to 2012’s “Silver Age.” There were moments that grabbed me immediately like “Tomorrow Morning,” but it took several listens for the whole thing to click. Once it got under my skin it didn’t leave my turntable for a week.

2. Trap Them- ‘Bliss***r’ Sorry, I am not allowed to type dirty words, but you get the picture. While there is obviously a certain amount of shock with the title, it perfectly sums up the mood of the record. This one is filled with original nasty riff after nasty riff that blend in with some surprising hooks.

This is a juggernaut sledgehammer tossing truck of aggression that runs over most other so called aggressive bands.

1.The Afghan Whigs‘Do To The Beast’ Their first new album since 1998’s ‘1965’ is a welcome addition to their catalog. I would love pretty much anything that this group released. If this were an album of them improvising an opera, it would still crack my top ten.

However, this is really, really good. It seems to me like a natural progression the work singer, Greg Dulli, has been doing with his other group The Twilight Singers, while still incorporating some of the aspects that made soul drenched rock outfit The Afghan Whigs so great.

Walking into Robert Wallace’s office you are taken back by the amount of books that line the wall before you even begin to have a chance at seeing the years worth of student work dedicated to “Moby Dick” lining the rest of the walls.

“My favorite thing about the office is the combination of books and paintings because I teach literature and the arts,” Wallace said. “It kind of replicates my unusual imagination, that I like bringing unlike things together, so the office kind of shows that.”

Wallace, who has been at NKU since 1972 only started allowing students to do art pieces

for assignments in 1997. It was then that he began acquiring them either by purchasing them or by having students donate them to his collection.

“When students do artworks in my classes I often want to acquire some of them to show to future students so they have ideas of what’s been done before so I will often offer to buy a work and sometimes a student will give or loan it,” Wallace said.

One piece in the corner of his office is on an “extended loan” from a past student and Wallace said that it is even written into his will that it will be returned to her when he passes.

Sitting surrounded by an estimated 1,600 books in his office alone, Wallace says that, to no surprise, his favorite book is “Moby Dick.”

“I’ve taught it since I came in ’72 and

student responses are so unique to the book,” Wallace said. “It’s not always easy to read, even the students who resist the book while they read it… when they see how other students have responded and how other artists have responded and the freedom to take the book as you wish, they find a lot of rich stuff in there.”

Standing out in the sea of “Moby Dick” themed art is a basketball with signatures scattered across it. It turns out the story behind the basketball is as unique as the tale of “Moby Dick.”

Wallace is the author of “Thirteen Women Strong,” a book about the struggles of the 2006-07 NKU women’s basketball team.

“I had written my book… and while I was revising that book and getting it published the 2008 team won the national title and I had

room to write an epilogue at the end of my book about that so they gave me the ball after the season ended,” Wallace said.

As for changes to his office, Wallace just wishes he had more space to store all of his books and artwork.

“I’d make it less crowded, but I don’t know how to do that really because it’s hard to throw away these artworks,” Wallace said. “I want to keep them as long as I can.”

Sports&Recreation NKU Women end season with a loss in WBI

After an opening round 79-81 loss in the Women’s Basketball invitational (WBI) tournament to Marshall, the NKU women’s basketball team’s season came to end after a third straight winning record in Division I, a trip to the Atlantic Sun Conference championship game and a third consecutive berth to the WBI. “Well, I thought that was a really tough way for us to go out and finish the year,” NKU Head Coach Dawn Plitzuweit said after the loss. “We were a very solid defensive team most of the season and struggled to score most of the season. The tables turned tonight… our kids battled and fought and tried to find a way [to win].”

The Norse finished their third Division I season with a 19-14 record, which included a run to the finals of the Atlantic Sun Championship game, losing to Florida Gulf Coast University.

The appearance in the conference tournament was the Norse’s first after the A-Sun Conference announced last summer that NKU would be eligible for conference championships in all sports, beginning with the current academic year.

The Norse entered the conference tournament as the third-seed, hosting the first round game and beating USC Upstate 64-45 at Regents Hall. The Norse advanced to the semifinals in a matchup with second-seeded Stetson.

Coming into the game as the underdog, the Norse stunned the Stetson Hatter behind the sharp shooting of Molly Franson and Melody Doss, who both scored 14 points, to move the Norse into the championship to face top-seeded and nationally-ranked Florida Gulf Coast.

Finally, a day after the loss to Florida Gulf Coast, the team found out late that night that they would be playing in the WBI for the third straight year, hosting Marshall at The Bank of Kentucky Center on March 19.

Despite the postseason losses, the Norse look toward next season without graduating senior and top scorer Doss.

“Mel is someone we rely a great deal on to find a way to put the ball in the basket,” Plitzuweit said.

The Norse are also losing seniors Malika Glover and Kaitlyn Gerrety to graduation.

“Certainly, [they are] three big losses for our program because of who they are and what they’ve done in their own ways,” Plitzuweit said.

“Their legacy is what they’ve done to build our program.”

Despite the losses of Doss, Glover, and Gerrety, NKU’s future looks bright behind players like freshman Kasey Uetrecht, who scored 26 points in the loss to Marshall.
