Parade celebrates graduating seniors from Marysville, Tulalip

Students rode along a route that took them to all four local high schools and through much of the Marysville community.

Residents and parents came out along the route to wave signs and cheer them on.

Because of COVID-19 seniors and their parents missed out on many of the milestones of the final year of high school.

Marysville Rotary holds blood drive

Graduating high school seniors from Marysville and Tulalip were celebrated during a parade on May 29.

Marysville Rotary held a blood drive with the American Red Cross to increase the blood supply during a critical time for many hospitals.

The local service club

held their blood drive on June 4.

Rick McCarthy, president of the Marysville Rotary, said that blood is still needed at many hospitals.

AHS Flight Choir releases 'Rise Up' performance in support of anti-racism

By Christopher Andersson christopher@northcountyoutlook.com Arlington High School's Flight Choir released a 'digital choir' performance of the song 'Rise Up' in solidarity with protests going on around the nation. The video is available at https://bit.ly/3h03P54.

After the death of George Floyd while he was in custody of a Minnesota police department, activists across the country have gathered in cities to protest, often for multiple days in a row.

The local Flight Choir had already been

practicing the song 'Rise Up' for the school's graduation ceremony.

"When we first went to online learning we were looking for different songs we could perform for graduation," said Heidi Forslund, choir director at the school.

"We had been practicing the song 'Rise Up' before these events happened," she said.

Forslund had given the students the song weeks ago and said at the time everyone loved it.

mencement would be impossible this year.

"I was really upset because it was going to be a last hurrah with my friends and knowing we wouldn't be able to have that," said local senior Keili Roberts.

Shanna Young, a local parent and one of the parade's organizers, said it was disappointing for her as well.

"You look forward to watching your child walk across the stage for 13 years and, through nobody's fault, it gets canceled this year," she said.

Parents were originally told a graduation ceremony with two parents allowed would be possible, but those plans eventually had to change.

It was at that time one local parent decided to begin organizing an event for the seniors that would become the parade.

"It's a group that decided to just get together and do this," said Rachel Loertscher, one of the parents and organizers of the event.

Some district staff were also involved in the planning but they were not representing the school district in an official capacity.

The event did have the support of schools, the city and the local fire district, said Young.

Approximately 250 cars were involved with the parade, many featuring decorations and balloons.

Many of the people involved said they enjoyed the event.

"I think it was a really great thing, just so we did have something positive," said graduating senior Peyton Schmidt. "It was a great thing to be a part of."

Cars filled with seniors and families drove through the Marysville and Tulalip area on a route that took them past many groups of onlookers and supporters.

"I liked the sense of community when everyone was cheering on the seniors as they were driving by," said Schmidt. "I don't think I've seen something like that before where everyone comes together."

"I thought that it was super unique and unexpectedly fun," she said. "I liked being able to see my friends and family on the side of the road and it was really cool."

For many it was a more active ceremony for the occasion.

"I heard from a lot of kids that it was more relaxed and fun, because it wasn't just sitting around waiting to walk across a stage," said Young.

Marysville and Tulalip residents came out to support the seniors and watch the parade.

"So much of the community came out to support the kids, even those who didn't have seniors," said Young.

will be a special event for the Class of 2020 to make up a little for all they lost because of the pandemic.

"They lost out on prom, on parties, on their graduation," said Young.

"My daughter is a dancer and she lost out on her dance season, and many lost out on sports," she said.

Many of the parents said that the event went well.

"A lot of the parents want to make it an annual tradition now," said Loertscher, although whether that will happen remains to be seen.

Roberts appreciated everyone who helped organized the event.

"I want to thank the parents who put this together," she said. "It just made our senior year so much better."

VOA distributes food to local food banks

The Volunteers of America of Western Washington has been helping to distribute additional food to county food banks as the need has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"VOAWW, in partnership with Food Lifeline and the National Guard, has been receiving 500 pallets of food a week to address Covid19-related needs facing Snohomish County residents," said Brian Smith, chief operating officer of the Volunteers of America of Western Washington.

That food goes to the Snohomish County's Food Bank Coalition, which includes the local Marysville Community Food Bank and Arlington Community Food Bank, as well as 16 other food banks.

"The Marysville and Arlington food banks have always been amazing partners in this and we are grateful to be able to step up our efforts to support them," said Smith.

Beginning on May 15 the VOAWW entered a sixmonth lease of the former Arlington Haggen's building so the organization can receive more food and distribute it more quickly.

"In order to accommodate this massive increase in goods we have leased a 64,000-square-foot facility in Arlington to house all of it," said Smith.

The new building has helped their supply line run smoother.

"We have significantly increased the amount of food and pallets going to the Snohomish County Food Bank Coalition, as well as developing new delivery routes," said Smith.

"Social service agencies are picking up pallets directly from the warehouse and we are working to develop a drive-thru model in various locations throughout the Snohomish County," he said.

Food banks locally and nationally have seen large increases in demand as families have lost income from jobs during the coronavirus stay-at-home orders.

"COVID-19 has devastated countless families from all walks of life," said Smith.

"Having food on the table is a basic human right and we are doing what we can to address that need brought on by this epidemic," he said.

The VOAWW is also seeing rises in demand for some of their other services as well.

"We're are seeing an immense increase in the need for rent and utility assistance. While the morato-

rium on evictions has been wonderful, many families are fearing the massive expenses that await them when this is over," said Smith.

"We have been working diligently to pay those bills now for residents so that the burden is significantly lessened," he said.

The VOAWW plans to continue delivering food to local food banks throughout the crisis.

"Snohomish County residents are an extremely resilient group of people. We are seeing so much community support and this, coupled with groups like our local food banks, give me a lot of hope for our future," said Smith.

Local protests have been small, nonviolent

By Christopher Andersson christopher@northcountyoutlook.com The Tulalip area saw about 40 individuals come to the Quil Ceda Village on May 31, but most claims of violent protest around the Snohomish County area appear to be internet rumors at this time.

The death of George Floyd, a Minnesotan black

man who died while in police custody under charges of using a counterfeit $20 bill, has sparked outrage and protests across the county.

The Tulalip Tribes closed down areas around their two casinos and Quil Ceda Village on May 31 in response to information they received.

Officials say they believe

individuals who came that night were primarily there not to protest but to vandalize and loot.

"The people who came to Tulalip last night were not here to change the system. This was an attempt to loot and only targets the innocent," said Tulalip Tribal Chairwoman Teri Gobin in a statement.

She said the Tulalip

In Marysville and Arlington rumors spread quickly about potential violent protests or looting, however at this time nothing has come of those rumors.

"There are lots of rumors going around and what is most frustrating is that we're seeing the downsides of social media," said Arlington Police Chief Jon-

These rumors have caused a lot of people calling in to the police.

"It has generated a lot of phone calls to the department as well," said Ventura.

In Marysville officials are seeing many of the same rumors.

"We have seen a lot of info on social media," said Commander Mark Thomas of the Marysville Police Department.

"We saw a lot of info that would be concerning about potential looting," he said.

"We're looking at a lot of that info to see what may or may not be coming," he said.

Local law enforcement agencies are working together, along with the Sheriff 's Office, said Ventura.

"So, we have a lot of intelligence sources," he said, adding the Arlington Police Department does have preparations ready in case any criminal activity does happen.

"We don't have any info about a credible protest being organized at this time," he said on June 3.

"There's been a few people holding signs here and there, but no organized groups of people," he said, and no criminal activity from those individuals.

In Marysville there has not been anything other than small groups as well.

"We have had some demonstrations and protests," said Thomas.

"They were very respectful and appropriate and there was no negative connotations to those groups," he said. "We haven't seen the damage that some other communities have seen."

Thomas added the Marysville police will support the right to peaceful protest.

"We understand the community's outrage at this time and we support their right to be heard and that we need to listen," he said.

Chick-fil-A opens in Marysville

By Christopher Andersson christopher@northcountyoutlook.com A new Chick-fil-A opened in Marysville on May 21 serving chicken products to a large number of individuals throughout the opening day.

The restaurant is at 8810 36th Ave. NE, Marysville.

The national franchise is one of the largest fast food chains in the nation and is known for their chicken sandwich "which is 100 percent whole breast meat, without any fillers, hormones or additives," said John Clingen, franchise owner and operator of the new Marysville location.

Most of their products are made from scratch daily, he said, "including salads prepared from fresh vegetables and fruit that is hand-chopped throughout the day."

He said the customer service of the restaurant will appeal to people in the Marysville area.

"I hope people will like the quick service and overall genuine hospitality that they will experience through our team members," he said.

The first couple of days for the popular restaurant saw long lines of cars in Marysville being directed by local police officers through the less essential streets so as not to cause any additional traffic delays.

"Opening day was great.

We were so excited to see the number of people who were anticipating the opening of our restaurant and it was an honor to see so many new faces from our community, " said Clingen.

"We have implemented a number of procedures at our restaurant that include

limited-contact ordering, payment and meal delivery procedures, social distancing recommendations and more," said Clingen.

They are also following CDC guidelines for restaurant operation.

"Chick-fil-A team members will wear face protection while working in the restaurant and drive-thru.

Team members are also required to wear gloves and wash their hands frequently, and we have deployed outdoor hand washing stations for Team Members in the drive-thru nationwide,” said Clingen.

Clingen said he is happy to be a part of the Marysville community.

"We are eager to serve the community of Marysville and understand that convenience is a necessity during this time," he said.

Cities offer support to local businesses ____

Arlington and Marysville have a number of initiatives to provide monetary, informational and other support to businesses as they re-open from the COVID-19 shutdown orders.

Snohomish County has been approved for phase two of reopening under Gov. Jay Inslee's plan, which includes limited use of restaurants and other businesses.

Local cities are looking for ways they can help the economy recover as quickly as possible.

That includes monetary support. The federal coronavirus relief bill included provisions that allow cities to distribute funds to businesses and both Marysville and Arlington plan to.

"With a piece of that we are providing grants to businesses," said Sarah Lopez, community revitalization project manager for the city of Arlington. "With a focus on the small businesses in the city."

The grants are focused on helping those who have had trouble paying rent.

"The goal is to pay one to two month's rent," said Lopez. "We're hoping it will do a lot to help with that."

Local businesses have been welcoming the support, she said.

"They are super emotional and worried, and also appreciative to have any support at this time," she said.

Marysville has a number of grant programs as well, including from funds from the federal coronavirus relief bill.

"That provides $4,000 of rent relief for local businesses," said Marysville Mayor Jon Nehring.

The city is also working through the Community Development Block Grant funds to help local businesses as well, and have partnered with the Economic Alliance of Snohomish County for a third grant program.

"Dozens of local businesses received $10,000 to help," through that program, said Nehring.

The two cities also hope to help through information and support.

"We have dedicated staff, like myself, who are pushing communications about the support that is

available," said Lopez.

They are helping businesses understand the regulations and restrictions.

"So you can look at the sheet and quickly see what capacity you're supposed to be under to reopen," she said.

An economic task force with Arlington is helping provide other tools for business owners.

"We've created a purchasing supply guide, that was put together

by Mike Simpson [Arlington Grocery Outlet owner]," said Lopez.

"It helps provide guidance on how to get the items needed to reopen," she said.

They have done other material support such as providing pickup signs and mailing masks off to local households as well.

"So our citizens will have the masks to use to help them feel comfortable shopping again," said Lopez.

Marysville is also trying to make re-opening as easy as possible.

"We're offering a kit for small businesses to help meet some of the requirements of re-opening,"

The kits have items like placemats, masks, posters that are required by the state, and personal protective equipment.

"If they want that kind of kit they can get it from the city," said Nehring.

The city's website has also been promoting businesses that remain open.

"On our website we've been highlighting businesses that are still open, in whatever manner that may be," said Nehring, and they plan to continue that.

Ultimately businesses will need to be open again if they are to survive, said Nehring.

"We've also been advocating to try and get us to re-open in a more expedited manner," he said.

Staff and students wanted to get the song out now rather than wait for the school's graduation date.

Re-opening is important to city officials, she said.

"This is a priority for our city council members and our mayor," said Lopez.

working and learning in an environment that is free of harassment, bullying, violence and racism."

The 'digital choir' performance was the result of a lot of work as students individually filmed their performances which were stitched together through video editing.

"I had to do a lot of research," said Forslund.

"I conducted myself and sent that video to the kids for them to use," she said, adding she also had to provide instructions on how to record and what part to sing.

Arlington community member Anthony Sanchez, who runs a video editing business, provided a lot of assistance to get the video together, said Forslund.

"It's kind of silly when you receive the video and you're looking at just one person singing just their part, but then it is very cool when you put them all together," said Forslund.

Forslund said the students were happy with the final product.

"On Wednesday a few of them were in tears watching it," she said. "I was very emotional too."

Community members and parents have also been very pleased with the video.

"The parents have just been happy to see this amazing video of music from their kids," said Forslund.

Forslund also said she was happy to be a part of the project.

"I could not be more proud of the kids," she said.

"I appreciate being able to share my students and their talent and I want to continue to do that."

Arlington Scouts hold Memorial Day vigil

By Christopher Andersson christopher@northcountyoutlook.com Arlington Boy Scouts held a 24-hour vigil at Arlington Fire Station 47 for this Memorial Day because the usual events they participate in had been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Troops 29 and 178 from Arlington, as well as Cub Scouts from Pack 29, participated in the day-long vigil at the Sept. 11 Remembrance Memorial at the station.

"From midnight to midnight we had our Scouts posted out there by the flag," said Rob Morlock, Scoutmaster for Troop 29.

"We were out there for 24 hours, with Scouts taking half hour or hour shifts," he said.

They hoped to honor troops with the vigil.

"We were showing reverence by being by the flag," he said.

Arlington Boy Scouts typically have a busy Memorial Day, but as the local parade and other activities had been canceled

they originally had nothing planned for this year.

"Usually we have so many other things to do during Memorial Day," said Morlock. "We typically help out with the parade and put out flags at the cemetery."

They decided to hold a vigil at the Sept. 11 Remembrance Memorial for the day.

"This is something we could do to honor those who served and remember the day for what it stands for," said Morlock.

He hopes the kids learn about the sacrifices people made in the military.

"One of the aspects of Scouts that we are supposed to teach is that we are to show reverence," said Morlock. "This is one of the ways to honor that."

Morlock said that is often the hardest aspect of the Scouts to teach the kids.

"But we talk about what is important and how we should sacrifice a little to honor this day," he said.

throughout the day and he was surprised by the number of people who have shown their enthusiasm for the event.

"We've had such a positive outpouring from the community," he said.

The local American Legion also gave their support for the vigil.

"The American Legion commander came out a bit and visited with our Scouts," said Morlock.

Morlock also wanted to thank the Scouts who came out for the day to complete their shift.

"The kids really showed up for this and there was no complaining, which surprised me," he said.

"Parents said they really enjoyed it. It was just a great time," he said.

Rotary Club of Arlington will skip 2020 Great Stilly Duck Dash Local businesses donate 100% of sponsorships to 2021 scholarships The Rotary Club of Arlington’s Board of Directors made the determination to cancel its Great Stilly Dusk Dash event on the Fourth of July for 2020.

“Each Fourth, the Duck Dash brings crowds of people to Haller Park,” said Duck Dash Chairperson Devin Brossard. “Following the cancellation of the Fourth of July Parade and other activities in Arlington, we felt that the best decision for the health and safety of our community this year was to forego this year’s annual fundraiser.”

The Rotary Club of Arlington has many business partners that sponsor the event each summer. Last year, the Club dedicated half of all sponsorship funds raised to go to scholarships to graduating students from Arlington, Darrington and Lakewood - $60,000

This year, several local business partners that had committed sponsorships to the event have agreed to put all of those funds towards scholarships for 2021 graduates – totaling $46,000 so far. McCarthy. He was contacted by the American Red Cross about the current donations coming in.

"So there's a definite shortage and a need right now due to COVID-19," he said.

The blood drive went well, according to McCarthy.

"We filled up all 40 spots in record timing," he said, adding that it only took three days to get all the spots signed up for.

"It's going good. Everybody seems real happy. A lot of our Rotary leaders are out here to donate," he said.

Donated blood helps save lives at hospitals.

"It's just a re-occurring need, a consumable," said McCarthy.

"We're all human and it's something we need to do, to give back and donate and help a fellow human being out because one day we're going to be on the other side of that fence needing blood that someone else generously gave," he said.

The local Rotary Club wanted to host the blood drive to help with those needs.

"We're spreading aware-

ness and helping out the American Red Cross," said McCarthy.

It had also been a while since the local Rotary had taken on a service project and they wanted to continue to do what they could for the community.

"We wanted to do this to keep Rotary strong in the community and give back and to pull the community back together," he said.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has kept the Club from meeting in person the Rotary has continued to get together online.

"We're doing lots of Zoom meetings and this is kind of our first get-together and seeing each other again," said McCarthy. "So it feels like we're getting things back to a normal again."

The event was held at Marysville Toyota.

"Jim Colon has generously offered up his dealership for us to hold this here as a safe, clean place to hold this at," said McCarthy.

He also wanted to show appreciation toward local Rotary Clubs around the Snohomish County region who helped spread the word and brought members in to donate.

"Thank you Rotary for stepping up," he said.

The Stanwood’s STEM Scholar in technology, Emily Molstad found herself to be very passionate about her engineering classes in high school. She said she always enjoyed different STEM subjects, but it wasn’t until an Engineering and Design class with Mr. Hanson that she could imagine a career in STEM. Another rewarding experience for Molstad was her participating with the Technology Student Association, an after-school club. Her favorite teacher, Mr. Hanson was the advisor, and her team placed first in state for Board Game Design, so they went to Washington, D.C., for the national convention.

They placed first again this year, but the convention in Nashville was canceled. She looks forward to continuing her studies and TSA during her senior year.

Stanwood’s STEM Scholar in math, Hannah Woods, also found that the STEM subjects came

easy for her. “I’ve always had a knack for STEMrelated topics,” Woods said, “But the teachers I've had along the way have been a large factor in my pursuit.

Mr. Swanson has been my math teacher since freshman year and I don't think I'd have the same skill set without him.” Woods plans to become an engineer. “I haven't pinned down which field specifically. I've been bouncing back and forth in deciding what I'd like to do with my future, but this recognition feels like a sign in a way,” Woods said.

Each year, AAUW members work hard to make a difference in the academic lives of girls. They raise funds for projects like this with their Purses with a Purpose luncheon and auction which also helps pay STEM students to attend a summer camp.

“This year, to honor the students’ hard work we are sending a letter of recognition for their student port-

folios and a $25 gift card” Moore said.

While the reward is small, the girls appreciate the recognition.

“I am very thankful for this award,” Woods said. “I am proud to represent my school and the women of my generation.”

Applegate was thrilled to receive the honor from AAUW. “It’s so satisfying to see all my hard work pay off,” Applegate said. “They could have chosen many other talented girls.”

Ziemer agreed. "UW means a great deal to me,” she said. “I appreciate that AAUW is bringing more visibility to women in sciences in order to break stereotypes.”

"Being recognized for my work is an amazing experience,” Molstad said.

In an average year, 425 scholars from 159 schools across the state are honored as part of the AAUW-WA Scholar Recognition Program.

COVID-19 pandemic necessitates action at every level of government

The social and economic devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated action by every level of government to help individuals and businesses.

Funding passed at the federal level has made its way to the local level for appropriations. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which the President signed into law on March 27th, is the largest pandemic spending package in U.S. history.

Direct payments to state and local governments are a significant component of the CARES Act. Snohomish County received $143 million to help respond to the pandemic and provide relief and support to our residents. There are certain criteria which govern how the funds can be used to ensure that the appropriations are related to COVID-19 relief.

The Snohomish County Council is working with the County Executive and community partners to determine the best use of the funds. Over the coming weeks, we will considering decisions to allocate the money to support efforts including economic and workforce development, emergency and public health response, and housing and human services.

I believe it is critical that we work to direct some of these federal funds directly to the small businesses who are fighting for survival.

Each day that passes, more small businesses are closing down. I regularly speak with many of our local businesses in North County and it is heartbreaking to hear about the economic devastation which is occurring and negatively impacting people’s livelihoods.

This is a loss not only to our small business owners, but also to the individuals they employ and to the community as a whole. The federal CARES Act dollars can play a role in supporting these businesses through this very difficult time. I have been advocating for using CARES Act funding for direct grants to small businesses to keep them afloat during this time and keep jobs until we return to some sense of normal.

The economic disruption caused by the pandemic has also created a significant burden for residents to continue to provide housing and essential support for their families. That is why we will be considering

appropriating a portion of CARES Act dollars towards rental and mortgage support for those most affected by the economic shutdown.

We will also be considering making historic investments into our local food banks who have served as a crucial lifeline to many families in our communities.

In addition to relief for small business, housing, and food, we will also be considering funding for the direct costs associated with the response to the COVID-19 outbreak, including emergency response and public health. These are just a few of the many opportunities Snohomish County has to invest the CARES funding into our communities.

In summary, we are working diligently to stretch every dollar to help keep people in their homes, keep businesses open, and help the most vulnerable among us. These historic investments will be essential to helping our communities weather this storm moving forward.

4. During the spring, spray with either a natural or synthetic fungicide to control mildew and black spot. Do not spray rugosa roses or they will burn.

5. For aphids, hose off large infestations or occasionally spray as needed.

Ladybug populations will build up and help to control them. Other than an occasional worm or cane borer, there really aren’t very many bug problems.

6. Around Thanksgiving, mulch your roses and prune them back to two feet tall for the winter. In mid to late March finish the winter pruning by selecting

7. The rest of the year, enjoy your roses by cutting copious bouquets throughout the season.

are a good investment and they blend well with mixed shrubs and perennials in the sunny areas of your garden.
