2024 IMPACT REPORT

“ We’ve always aimed to be on the forefront of health and innovation, and our accomplishments in 2024 reflect the progress we’ve made.”

“ We’ve always aimed to be on the forefront of health and innovation, and our accomplishments in 2024 reflect the progress we’ve made.”
Dear Colleagues, Supporters, and Friends,
In times of change, it is important to remember the power of the mission of the New York Academy of Medicine (NYAM): to ensure that everyone has what they need to live healthier, longer lives, from safe birth to healthy aging.
Since 1847 — through world wars, economic stresses, and pandemics — NYAM has advocated for the health of all populations. By harnessing the power of science and community, we are able to explore what works and advocate for what people need. NYAM has always been at the forefront of innovation and collaboration, and our work reflects the future we’re working toward, together.
NYAM’s population health research helped create real-world advances for people to live healthier and longer lives — as we call it, better “healthspans”. We conducted dozens of projects and studies across our city, state, and nation. Through our unparalleled power of convening, NYAM brought together community, industry, and health system leaders to seek solutions for some of the most pressing health issues we face today. We welcomed an exciting new cohort of Fellows, representing greater diversity and new fields of expertise. The Journal of Urban Health welcomed two new co-editors-in-chief, committed to acknowledging growing forms of exclusion as threats to population health. I am pleased to share more with you in the following pages.
With many accomplishments in 2024, we recognize that there is still much to do. Good health remains out of reach for far too many of us — and NYAM refuses to accept this as an inevitability. Health can, and must be, equitable. For 178 years we have been committed to that vision, and we will persevere in our work, no matter the challenges. At NYAM, progress is our purpose.
The story in this year’s report is NYAM’s story — and it’s your story, as well. When you and your neighbors have what is needed to live a healthy life, everyone prospers. When we lead with compassion, truth, and fairness, we will be a force for change.
I thank you, our dedicated friends, partners, and supporters, for continuing to stand with us, and helping us deliver the promise of a better and healthier future.
Be well,
Ann Kurth, PhD, CNM, MPH President
2024 was a transformative year for NYAM’s research enterprise, as we made remarkable progress in advancing population health and in improving health outcomes. At the core of everything we do is the belief that we can eliminate barriers that prevent everyone from living healthier, longer lives. NYAM’s advocacy is built upon the importance of comprehensive research and programming. This foundational principle is why in 2024, NYAM implemented a strategic reorganization of four key focus areas:
Better health starts at birth. NYAM is improving health outcomes for mothers and children by addressing prenatal care, infant and maternal mortality, and childhood development.
Chronic diseases — like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer — are significant threats to healthy longevity. We are addressing NCDs with policy interventions and a focus on prevention and management.
We strive to ensure high quality of life for older adults, addressing age-related diseases, caregiving, and social determinants of health.
NYAM’s work through CEAR includes program evaluations, community health needs assessments, and research studies. We collaborate with healthcare and government organizations to advance health equity.
The reimagining of our enterprise has set NYAM up to take a more cohesive approach to addressing the healthspan and making healthy lives for all a reality. As we reflect on this last year, I want to thank you all for your continued support. As we look forward to 2025, we remain committed to our mission and the opportunities ahead. Thank you for your continued support and dedication to our work.
Sincerely,
Kathryn T. Hall, PhD, MPH Senior Vice President of Research
“ It was a year marked by transformative changes, and we made remarkable progress in advancing population health and improving health outcomes.”
This year, we made significant strides in advocating for better health for all — just as we have for the past Our work ensures you and your community can live healthier, longer lives. Here’s a look at the biggest highlights
This year’s accomplished class is 63% women, and includes key professions across the healthcare industry — such as health administration and management, healthcare consulting and more.
Research is at the heart of what we do, and this year, we supported 27 projects designed to ensure everyone is able to live healthier, longer lives.

In 2024, we partnered with community organizations, healthcare systems, and local governments to design innovative research studies, policy initiatives, and programs — all focused on more equitable health. Here’s a closer look at some of our projects.
For young people, mentorship can be a game changer. This program matches youth in foster care from underserved communities with a mentor. The mentor/ mentee relationship supports their personal and academic development. It also helps mentees foster stronger self-esteem and a belief in the power of their voices.
For far too long, racism has existed in medicine. That’s why we collaborated with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to address the way race is used in diagnosing, preventing, and treating medical conditions. We are focused on improving racial equity by eliminating race-based adjustments in these medical decision-making tools.
We can create inclusive and accessible communities for an aging population. Funded by the New York State Office of Mental Health, our Center for Healthy Aging acted as the Geriatric Technical Assistance Center. Through that partnership, we addressed the aging, mental health, and substance use needs of older adults.
Family caregivers are instrumental to helping an aging population thrive. Exhale funds projects across Western New York and Southeast Michigan that provides respite opportunities for these caregivers. CEAR conducted an evaluation of Exhale, and a network study of the growing ecosystem of organizations doing this important work.
“NYAM have been critical partners… With their expertise and assistance, our safety-net partners have been able to develop rigorous research plans and implement mixed-method approaches to capture changes in patient outcomes along the diagnosis to treatment spectrum.”
Michelle Morse, MD, MPH Acting Health Commissioner and Chief Medical Officer NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Everything we do at NYAM is to ensure all populations from all backgrounds have healthier, longer lives. It has always been our goal to make a real-world impact on people’s lives, and eliminate inequities that lead to poor health outcomes. Through our innovative research practices and programming, as well as our collaborations with community organizations, health systems, and government agencies, we are creating a future where a healthy life is more accessible for everyone.
The climate crisis is upon us, and that is why we need to design resilient health systems now. In February 2024, we launched our climate initiative with the symposium “Designing Health Systems Resilience: Surviving the Present, Ensuring the Future.” And in September, in collaboration with Yale Center on Climate Change and Health, we hosted an event on sustainable health systems. Sector leaders presented research findings around low carbon, resilient health care delivery, and exploring real actionable solutions on building sustainable health systems, resulting in an abstract.
In 2024, we named not one, but two, new co-editors-in-chief of The Journal of Urban Health With this change, the Journal is now positioned for long-term success. Our peer-reviewed, one-of-a-kind publication explores the emerging field of urban health and epidemiology. We thank Dr. David Vlahov, who served as the editor-in-chief for 25 years.
We are home to one of the most significant medical libraries in the world. Opened in 1878, our library houses a large collection of rare books, archival documents, and more. In September, we convened with members of other significant historical medical libraries to chart a way forward in the age of distrust in science and rapidly evolving AI tools. Results from this convening will be published in a special digital edition.
With support from The John A. Hartford Foundation, NYAM hosted participants from across the US to discuss collaborative action that will improve care of older adults by addressing social isolation and loneliness. The resulting convening report culminated in a new grant from The John A. Hartford Foundation to USAging to improve the health of older adults and their caregivers through replication of evidence-based social connection programs in communities.
“We stand for the power of science combined with the wisdom of communities and are proud to do this alongside our thousands of Fellows, action partners, dedicated staff, dynamic Board of Trustees, and everyone who shares our vision of a healthier future.
