Life Explained

On the first day, God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.” The dog said, “That’s a long time to be barking. How about only ten years and I’ll give you back the other ten?” And God saw it was good. On the second day, God created the monkey and said, “Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I’ll give you a twenty-year life span.” The monkey said, “Monkey tricks for twenty years? That’s a pretty long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog did?” And God, again, saw it was good. On the third day, God created the cow and said, “You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves and give milk to support the farmer’s family. For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years.” The cow said, “That’s kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years. How about twenty and I’ll give back the other forty?” And God agreed it was good. On the fourth day, God created humans and said, “Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life. For this, I’ll give you twenty years.” But the human said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?” “Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.” So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone. Life has now been explained to you.

From the Publishers I always shake my head in amazement when September arrives. Our summer season is far too short for my liking; but, on the other hand, autumn is truly beautiful. The leaves on the trees begin their transformation to stunning shades of orange, red and yellow and many people travel to the mountains just to take spectacular pictures of the fall foliage. The first day of the autumn season is the day when the Sun crosses the celestial equator, moving southward either September 22nd or 23rd. This day is known as the Autumnal Equinox. There, you learned something new today! Our Fall Issue is jampacked full of all sorts of different, interesting and unique articles – you are going to love it! Baby stuff, Home Entertaining, Health & Fitness tips and this month’s Luscious Joys is truly luscious! And, of course, there are lots of funny stories and jokes. We receive a lot of feedback about the funny stuff – you like to laugh and so do we! It’s good for your soul. ~ Kathryn Hartwell

HOME ENTERTAINING - September 2011

There is nothing more rewarding than pulling off the best house party of the year. All you need is a plan; an idea and vision of what kind of party you want. Organization is the key. There are six questions to answer to get started: What is the date? How many guests will there be? What is the location? What type of party will it be? What is your budget? Is there going to be music or entertainment? Sending invitations is not necessary for informal parties. A simple telephone call weeks in advance is sufficient (or, in the time of technology, a “Facebook Invite”!). For formal affairs, invitations can be sent out three to four weeks in advance, or even earlier for very important events. If you are sending invitations, be sure to include an R.S.V.P., and don’t hesitate to call people for responses – you need to calculate quantities for an event. Be strict about the size that fits your space and try to find an idiosyncratic mix of people who make an interesting ensemble. If guests will be standing, the average-size room can generally accommodate 30 people. For any form of buffet, you must provide seating. Why you are throwing the party - a birthday, anniversary or just for fun? This will help you set the date and size. Cocktail parties are the least expensive and most versatile. For a sit-down meal, you must have dishes, flatware, glassware, linens, seating, and serving pieces. A buffet is almost as versatile as a cocktail party, and the size and price can be tailored to your budget. Think drinks first, as alcohol can be a major expense. Don’t feel as though you need to be as well stocked; consider serving a signature drink. Be inventive with your food choices to limit costs -- instead of fillet of beef, have a Mexican fiesta. Music can make or break a party but doesn’t have to be complicated. For simpler affairs, it is generally there for background support. Hook your iPod up to speakers and create a specific playlist. Once you have answers to these questions, the framework for your party is in place. Now use this information to figure out the details. The type of party will dictate & what you need. Outside of that, be creative and tailor a party you would want to attend. The Plan: ~ Two to Four Weeks Ahead: Create a budget, Draw up a guest list, Choose a location, Decide on a menu: appetizers, main dishes, side dishes, desserts, beverages, Send invitations (four weeks ahead for major holidays). If you’re cooking, make as much as you can ahead of time to minimize kitchen time on party day. If it’s potluck, assign the dishes. Birthday party? Order the cake if you’re not baking it. Reserve rented items such as plates, cups, glassware, coffee urns, tables, chairs, table linens, serving pieces, etc. (It’s especially important to book early for busy holiday seasons.) Arrange for delivery on party day. Hire help for kitchen, serving, or bartending if necessary. One Week Ahead: Review menu preparation timeline--are you on target with make-ahead dishes? Purchase non-perishable food items and candles, firewood, etc. Finalize RSVPs. Two Days Before: Purchase fresh meats, Make sure camera is charged, Wash wine glasses and other glassware if you’re not renting. One Day Before: Purchase fresh produce, Set table or decorate buffet, Set up the bar, Lay out serving pieces and utensils, Purchase and arrange flowers Stock plenty of toilet paper and put out the guest towels Party Day: Purchase fresh seafood, Buy party ice, Chill beer and wine, make punch, Garnish party platters, Put finishing touches on decorations, Eat something light before guests arrive, Spin the tunes and greet your guests. How to Adjust Your Baby’s Natural Sleeping Rhythm Day sleeping is similar to eating; every child is different. Develop a schedule based on what you see in your baby, and once that schedule naturally forms, try to stay to it. You have to bend your schedule around your child’s if you want consistency. In other words, if your baby usually goes to sleep at 7:30 P.M., don’t take her to a class that starts at 7:00 P.M. or leave for the mall after 6:00 P.M. Plan your day around baby’s sleep schedule, and both of you will be much happier because you’ll soon fall into a predictable rhythm. A lot of mothers get frustrated that their babies can be so fussy at certain times of the day. Some of this frustration can stem from the fact that Mom has not taken the time to get to know her baby’s natural rhythm, and she has tried to make her baby work around her own schedule. Just because you wake up at 6:00 A.M. to get ready and go to work doesn’t mean your baby can adapt to your schedule. It might not be convenient for you to put baby to bed at 7:00 P.M. and wake up with her at 4:00 A.M., but you’re only asking for trouble if you plan a big gathering that doesn’t get started until after 7:00 P.M., and then get frustrated that your baby is so fussy. Of course she’s fussy! She’s tired, and it’s past her bedtime! Join us for Fall fitness classes and SAVE! The good news is that sleep schedules change quickly. Transition

Transition is the theme for the 2011 Wheatland Business Women’s event of “Wine women and Wisdom”. This is the third year for the WBW September event providing a relaxing, yet informative evening that rejuvenates women whatever their chapter in life. Between the various endings and new beginnings in our lives we experience transitions. Sometimes they are a surprise and at other times they come about through careful planning. The guest speaker, Phoebe Fung is the Proprietor of Vin Room, an upscale wine bar that she founded in 2008 by restoring a heritage site in the Mission area of Calgary. She spent 15 years in the oil and gas industry before taking a sabbatical to pursue her interests in travel, food and wine. It was this sabbatical that provided an opportunity to her transition. Be sure to mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 28 and purchase tickets to this much anticipated event that will take place at the Strathmore Travelodge in the Heritage Room. Tickets are $25.00. Please visit the website, www.businesswomen.ca , e-mail info@businesswomen.ca or phone 403-324-3147 for further information.

Why? Why? Why?

Why do banks charge a fee on “insufficient funds” when they know there is not enough? Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet? Why doesn’t glue stick to the bottle? Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? Why does Superman stop bullets with his chest, but ducks when you throw a revolver at him? Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Family Pages FAMILY AND BABY

When did it get all so complicated when it comes to babies? I’ve had four of my own and I think the only baby book I ever bought was for name ideas. It’s become a business just like everything else – just check out the books at Chapters. Anyhow, having a baby is fun – not scary. Yes, a lot of hard work and having children is expensive, but the reward is immeasurable. Keeping your baby interested and occupied can be easier than you think without buying all the expensive toys and entertainment gadgets. Playing games helps fit the puzzle pieces together — as your baby grows, play is crucial for his social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Play also brings you and your baby closer and makes your time together that much more enjoyable. The more your baby laughs, the less he cries! You'll know your baby loves your antics when they turn toward you, smiling, or laughing. But if they squirm away from you, looks away, or cries, it's time to change the activity. Here are some fun ideas for you and your family and baby.

Birth to 3 months You want to engage your baby's senses: touch, sight (remember, your baby is still very nearsighted), smell, and hearing. By the end of his first three months, your baby may reach out and try to grab things and will be fascinated by sounds, smells, and patterns. Why Not Dance – it is good exercise to get rid of that baby fat and the whole family can have fun dancing. In the afternoons when baby gets grumpy, try dancing. Put on some music – something appropriate (I guess my Led Zeppelin would not work!) and dance around the room, holding baby in your arms. When your arms get tired, put your baby down and keep up the dance. Silly exaggerated movements like jazz hands or shaking your butt are particularly funny to babies. Close the drapes so the neighbours won't see, or let them watch – either way.

Page 16

Let’s Look at Stuff – Most of your early playtime will be spent showing your baby stuff. Any object in the house that won't poison, electrocute, or otherwise hurt baby is fair game. Babies love spoons, wire whisks, spatulas, books and magazines with pictures, record albums, colourful fabrics or clothes, fruits and vegetables, and so on. Oh, and don't expect babies to really "get" books at this age. You'll know they're enjoying them by their way of getting still and watchful when you bring a favourite book out. This was always my favourite time – holding baby and reading a book. My kids still remember the books I used to read to them – and I kept them all for my children to read to their babies and enjoy them all over again. They don’t always sit through a whole story, though, and when they're a few months older they'll grab the books from you and close them. This is all developmental stuff. Babies love looking at books and cuddling close to you, but they usually don't care about the plot. Journey into Mom’s Closet – You haven't spent a lifetime accumulating a closetful of bright, slinky, tactile clothing for nothing. Dig into your closet and show your baby your cashmere sweater, your cottony-soft favourite jeans, your brilliant plaid skirt. Run soft or silky fabrics over baby’s face, hands, and feet. Lay fuzzy stuff down on the floor and put your baby on top of it. In a few months, your baby will want to run his hands over anything beaded, embroidered, or otherwise embellished. But for now, he may just be content to gaze in wonder. And your other kids can play dress-up – that is always a ton of fun. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

The Diva Within – You may have a terrible voice — but your kid doesn't know it! Your baby will love anything you sing, but there are some classics you should know. “Itsy Bitsy Spider” it was the only song that made Brodie stop crying when he was on a jag. Most kids like any song with movements — "The Wheels on the Bus," "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes," and "Patty-Cake," to name a few. You may feel silly at first, but as your child gets into it, so will you. Try adding your baby's name to the song: "Old Mac Leesha had a farm," "Tifannie is my sunshine, my only sunshine," and so on. Try songs with silly sounds or animal noises in them, like "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" Try singing a song in a low growly voice and then in a high squeaky voice, to see which gets the most reaction. Try singing the song breathily into your baby's ear, or use a hand puppet (or a napkin or sock). Your other kids can sing too – singing is good for the soul. 4 to 6 months At this age, your baby will become a lot more physical, learning how to roll over and even sit up. She can now hold, handle, and mouth objects, and she'll spend a good part of her busy days doing so (meaning extra vigilance is needed on your part). Games can get more physical now. Your baby might enjoy knee rides or tickle games. She's also more responsive to you, making noises and meeting your eyes. Bubbles, Bubbles Everywhere – There's something magical about bubbles, and at this point your baby can see far enough away to focus on them. Blow bubbles when she's getting fussy. Blow bubbles in the bathtub or out on the porch when it's late afternoon and your baby is cranky. Bubbles are unbelievably cheap, easily transportable, and endlessly fascinating for babies. Smell the Spice Rack – You're in the kitchen, trying to throw some kind of dinner together when your baby starts wailing. Take her over to the spice rack and introduce her to the intoxicating scent of cinnamon. Rub some on your hand and put it up to your baby's nose. (Don't let it get in her eyes or mouth.) If she likes it, try others: Vanilla, peppermint, cumin, cloves, nutmeg, and many other herbs and spices have intriguing fragrances that your baby might love. Other household goods are fragrant, too: Dad's shaving lotion, Mom's hand cream. Sniff out everything yummy — just be careful not to let your baby eat it! I'm Gonna Get You! – Your baby is old enough to have a sense of anticipation now. And no baby can resist you coming at her mock-menacingly with a threat of hugs, kisses, or tickles. I'm going to get you and kiss you! I'm going to steal a kiss, baby! I'm coming! I'm coming! I...gotcha!" Then cover your baby in smooches. This Little Piggy – Touch your baby's toes in turn, starting with the big toe. Say, "This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy had roast beef (or, as Denise says, “tofu”), this little piggy had none. And this little piggy went wee-wee-wee all the way home." As you say that last part, run your fingers up your baby's belly. This game is useful for putting on socks and shoes or distracting your baby during diaper changes. You can also play this game in the bathtub with a squirt bottle targeting your baby's toes. Enjoy, love and laugh with your baby, your family and your husband. It makes life that much better! www.thenewsyneighbor.com By: Kathryn Hartwell

Olympic Oval no longer a Leaky Legacy!

9.7 million dollars sounds like a lot of money to fix a leaky roof! However, if you compare it to the 41.5 million the City of Calgary spent to replace the roof at the Talisman Center or the 465 million that is being spent to replace the roof at BC Place stadium in Vancouver, I would argue 9.7 million is a bargain. The Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary was the first covered oval built in North America. It was the crowning jewel of the 1988 Winter Olympics and was an engineering marvel with its unique lattice frame and arched roof. Just one minor problem, it leaked!

legacy of a world class facility for our city. Although the tiles are still being installed on the Olympic Oval, the building is now in full operation. The National long track speed skating team is training for the upcoming season. A season that will be highlighted by the Essent ISU World Sprint Championship in Calgary, January 28 - 29, 2012. The Olympic Oval will host a grand re-opening on October 15th. This will be a free public skating session from noon to 4 pm. Olympians will be on hand for an autograph session and it will be a great opportunity for everyone in Southern Alberta to re-discover this amazing facility. If you can’t make it out to the open house, check out the public skating schedule at www.oval.ucalgary.ca.

On warm winter days when the snow was melting or those rainy spring afternoons, the best speed skaters in the world would have to navigate puddles or bumps of frozen ice in certain spots on the fastest ice in the world. Not ideal training or race conditions for the world’s elite, but the Olympic Oval still managed its reputation as the best training center in the world with the fastest ice. Over the past number of years, the management team at the Olympic Oval explored a number of different options to repair the problem. A solar roof was discussed but it was cost prohibitive. A sub roof was a cheaper alternative but that would only mask an already worsening issue. “Keeping the original roof design was always our plan,” says Olympic Oval director Kam Kiland. “We just needed the funding to make it happen.” That funding came in November 2010 when the federal government agreed to revise the trust agreement under which the Oval has operated under since it was built for the Olympic Games. The Oval was given a 10 million dollar withdrawal from the Olympic Endowment Fund and construction began at the end of March. “This was a labour intensive task for Skyline Roofing,” says Kiland. “The triangular porcelain and enamel panels had to be removed and restored at the Skyline plant in Airdrie. The old membrane and insulation was stripped, recycled and replaced.” The goal was to have very little waste from the roof go into the landfill. The new insulation will create a more energy efficient operation. The refurbishment will ensure the ongoing Page 18

Preparing for the Class Reunion A “mature” woman’s perspective

For all you ladies over 50 I KNOW you understand... AND for those of you under 50 you WILL understand in a few years. I had prepared for it like any intelligent woman would. I went on a starvation diet the day before, knowing that all the extra weight would just melt off in 24-hours, leaving me with my sleek, trim, high-school-girl body. The last many years of careful cellulite collection would just be gone with a snap of a finger. I knew if I didn’t eat a morsel on Friday, that I could probably fit into my senior formal on Saturday. Trotting up to the attic, I pulled the gown out of the garment bag, carried it lovingly downstairs, ran my hand over the fabric, and hung it on the door. I stripped naked, looked in the mirror, sighed, and thought, “Well, okay, maybe if I shift it all to the back...” - bodies never have pockets where you need them. Bravely, I took the gown off the hanger, unzipped the shimmering dress and stepped gingerly into it. I struggled, twisted, turned, and pulled and I got the formal all the way up to my knees... before the zipper gave out. I was disappointed. I wanted to wear that dress with those silver platform sandals again and dance the night away. Okay, one setback was not going to spoil my mood for this affair. No way! Rolling the dress into a ball and tossing it into the corner, I turned to Plan B. The black velvet caftan. I gathered up all the goodies that I had purchased at the drug store -- the scented shower gel, the bodybuilding, and high- lighting shampoo & conditioner, and the splitend killer and shine enhancer. Soon my hair would look like that girl’s in the Pantene ads. Then the makeup -- the under eye “ain’t no lines here” firming cream, the all-day face-lifting gravity -fighting moisturizer with wrinkle filler spackle; the all day “kiss me till my lips bleed, and see if this gloss will come off” lipstick, the bronzing face powder for that special glow... But first, the roll-on facial hair remover. I could feel the wrinkles shuddering in fear. OK - time to get ready...I jumped into the steaming shower, soaped, lathered, rinsed, shaved, tweezed, buffed, scrubbed, and scoured my body to a tingling pink. I plastered my freshly scrubbed face with the anti-wrinkle, gravity fighting, “your face will look like a baby’s butt” face cream. I set my hair on the hot rollers. I felt wonderful. Ready to take on the world. Or in this instance, my underwear.

Why is it that no matter what colour bubble bath you use, the Bubbles are always white? Page 22

With the towel firmly wrapped around my glistening body, I pulled out the black lace, tummy-tucking, cellulite-pushing, ham hock-rounding girdle, and the matching “lifting those bosoms like they’re filled with helium” bra. I greased my body with the scented body lotion and began the plunge. I pulled, stretched, tugged, hiked, folded, tucked, twisted, shimmied, hopped, pushed, wiggled, snapped, shook, caterpillar crawled, and kicked. Sweat poured off my forehead but I was done. And it didn’t look bad. So I rested. A well deserved rest, too. The girdle was on my body. Bounce a quarter off my behind? It was tighter than a trampoline. Can you say, “Rubber baby buggy bumper butt?” Okay, so I had to take baby steps, and walk sideways, and I couldn’t move from my butt cheeks to my knees. But I was firm! Oh no. I had to go to the bathroom. And there wasn’t a snap crotch. From now on, undies gotta have a snap crotch. I was ready to rip it open and re-stitch the crotch with Velcro, but the pain factor from past experiments was still fresh in my mind. I quickly side stepped to the bathroom. An hour later, I had answered nature’s call and repeated the struggle into the girdle. I was ready for the bra. I remembered what the saleslady said to do. I could see her glossed lips mouthing, “Do not fasten the bra in the front, and twist it around. Put the bra on the way it should be worn - straps over the shoulders. Then bend over and gently place both breasts inside the cups.” Easy if you have four hands. But, with confidence, I put my arms into the holsters, bent over and pulled the bra down… but the boobs weren’t cooperating. I’d no sooner tuck one in a cup, and while placing the other, the first would slip out. I needed a strategy. I bounced up, and down a few times, tried to dribble them in with short bunny hops, but that didn’t work. So, while bent over, I began rocking gently back and forth on my heel and toes and I set ‘em to swinging. Finally, on the fourth swing, pause, and lift, I captured the gliding glands. Quickly fastening the back of the bra, I stood up for examination. Back straight, slightly arched, I turned and faced the mirror, turning front, and then sideways. I smiled. Yes, Houston, we have lift up! My breasts were high, firm and there was cleavage! I was happy until I tried to look down. I had a chin rest. And I couldn’t see my feet. I still had to put on my pantyhose, and shoes. Oh... why did I buy heels with buckles? Then I had to pee again. I put on my sweats, fixed myself a drink, ordered pizza, and skipped the reunion.

A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home...

He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed: ‘Dear Lord; I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home. I want her to know what I go through. So, please allow her body to switch with mine for a day.’ God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man’s wish. The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and picked up the dry cleaning, took it to the cleaners, stopped at the bank to make a deposit, went grocery shopping, then drove home to put away the groceries, pay the bills, and balanced the cheque book. He then cleaned the cat’s litter box and bathed the dog. By then, it was already 1PM so he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, vacuum, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor. He then ran to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with them on the way home. When they got home, he set out milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their homework. Then, he set up the ironing board and watched Barney while he did the ironing. At 4:30, he began peeling potatoes, washing the vegetables for a salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper. After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded laundry, bathed the kids, and put them to bed. At 9PM, he was exhausted and, though his daily chores weren’t finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love, which he managed to get through without complaint. The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said: ‘Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife’s being able to stay home all day. Please! Oh, please! Let us trade back! Amen!’ The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied: ‘My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were. You’ll just have to wait nine months, though. You got pregnant last night.’ Page 24

I am a Plum Kon Ni chi Wa (that’s ‘hello’ in Japanese) my name is Akiko and I am a Plum. Ha ji Me Ma Shi Te – nice to meet you! Although my ancestors originally came from China, we have become an important part of Japanese Culture for many centuries now. I have a tonne of different cousins with different heritages and places of origin. My European cousin originated near the Caspian Sea and that branch of my family tree is over two thousand years old. In ancient Roman times, I already had over 300 European plum cousins. Those relatives made the big trip across the ocean with the pilgrims and started living in the United States in the 17th century and my close cousins, the Japanese plums, didn’t move there until the 19th century. One of the unique things about me is that I have so many different and collective cousins, over 2,000! We come in a panorama of colours - red, purple, blue, green, yellow or amber, and our flesh comes in hues such as yellow, green, pink and orange. We are a virtual rainbow! Now, I haven’t told you how delicious, fleshy and succulent we are and how we are low in calories, contain no saturated fats, contain vitamins and minerals, fibre, sorbitol and isatin, vitamin C, vitamin A and beta-carotene. We are a powerful natural antioxidant, amazing for your vision and protect your lungs and mouth from cancer. We help regulate your digestive system, counter inflammation and scavenge harmful free radicals. We also have lutein, cryptoxanthin and zeaxanthin in significant amounts, which protect against oxygen-derived free radicals that play a role in aging. Oh, we also have potassium, fluoride and iron. Iron is required for red blood cell formation and potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure. And, we are rich in B-complex group of vitamins such as niacin, vitamin B-6 and pantothenic acid. These vitamins help body metabolize carbohydrates, proteins and fats. They also provide about 5% RDA levels of vitamin K. Vitamin K is essential for many clotting factors function in the blood as well as in bone metabolism and helps reduce Alzheimer's disease in the elderly. I am very Kenko-teki for you. Healthy, of course! So, you should be eating me! I am best fresh, of course, but just in case you want to eat me in other ways, I have included a few “Ume” (plum) recipes for your enjoyment. Sa yo na ra (good-bye) for now and a Ri ga to you (thank you) for taking time to read about me! Akiko Plum

Plum BBQ sauce

is sweet with a great fruity flavour. An amazing sauce for any cut of pork or piece of chicken.

6 fresh plums, nuts removed 1/2 onion, chopped 1/2 cup sugar 1 cinnamon stick 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 1 1/2 tablespoons bbq sauce 1/2 tablespoon garlic, minced

Combine all ingredients in a pot and simmer until plums are very soft, about 15 to 20 minutes. Remove cinnamon stick and allow to cool. Pour into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Use immediately or refrigerate for up to a week. Life just would not be the same without this Luscious Plum Cake made with Pluot plums – part plum and part apricot. We have pink and yellow skins and are just perfect for this recipe.

4 pluots or 4 to 5 plums, about 1 1/2 pounds, peeled and pitted 3/4 cup butter softened 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar 3 large eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons granulated sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon for topping

Grease and flour a 9-inch springform pan or spray with baking spray with flour. Heat oven to 350°. Slice peeled pluots or plums thinly and toss in a bowl with 1/4 cup of the sugar; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter and 1 cup of sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Slowly blend in

the dry ingredients until batter is smooth. The batter will be thick. Spread the batter in the prepared baking pan. Arrange the sliced pluots or plums all around in a concentric circle, overlapping slightly. Fill in gaps and overlap with any leftover slices of fruit. Sprinkle the sugar and cinnamon mixture evenly over the fruit. Bake for about 1 hour and 10 minutes to 1 hour and 20 minutes, or until a toothpick or cake tester inserted near the center of the cake comes out clean. Who doesn’t love a Plum Crumble? Everybody does! Sweet,

yummy plums and that amazing crunchy topping… mmm!

3 pounds fresh plums, pitted, quartered, about 5 cups ¼ Cup brown sugar 1 Cup sifted all-purpose flour 1 Cup granulated sugar ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. cinnamon 1 large egg ½ Cup melted butter

Combine plums and brown sugar, stirring well to blend. Pour into a buttered 11 1/2x7 1/2 inch baking dish. Sift together the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the beaten egg, stirring lightly with fork until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle mixture evenly over the plums then drizzle with the melted butter. Bake plum crumble at 375° for 40 to 45 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serve warm with whipped topping or ice cream.

Hungarian Plum Dumplings - szilvas gomboc. Here are

They can be eaten as dessert, a meatless main dish or side dish. And like Polish, Romanian and Croatian plum dumplings, the dough is made with mashed potatoes. This dough, however, is rolled with a pin, rather than forming the dumplings by hand. This recipe makes about 18 dumplings.

5 medium potatoes, peeled, boiled, mashed and cooled 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon salt 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 18 Italian prune plums, mashed and pitted 4 tablespoons butter 1 1/2 cups very fine bread crumbs 1/4 cup cinnamon sugar

In a large bowl, combine potatoes, eggs and salt. When well combined, add flour and mix until a soft dough forms. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest 30 minutes. Place a large pot of salted water on to boil. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough to 1/3 inch. Cut into 2-inch squares. Place a plum in the center of each square and fold in half, pressing out all air and sealing the edges. Moisten edges before crimping, if necessary, to seal. Carefully drop into boiling water. Repeat until all plums are in the water. Cook 30 minutes. Meanwhile, melt butter in large skillet, add bread crumbs and brown. Using a slotted spoon, remove dumplings to a colander to drain. Place dumplings in skillet, coating with buttered crumbs. Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. My mouth waters just thinking of these incredible dumplings.

DOGS AND BABIES

Book your appointment now! Call: 403-801-7640

When you bring home a new baby, you are adding a new member to your pack. Now it is time to create that special bond between baby and dog. It is important not to shut your dog out when the new baby comes home. Include the dog, and try and keep the same routine you usually have with the dog. Dogs need to be taught to give the baby space and respect. Preparing for the New Baby: Preparations for the new baby should start before the baby is brought home. Work on getting all dogs in your home balanced and well trained. Everyone in the family should educate themselves on understanding dog behaviour. You want your dog to be acting calm and submissive. I have often asked if becoming a dogs pack leader and having a submissive dog prevents a dog from being a good guard or watchdog. No, all members of the pack, even lower members will step up and protect the rest of the pack should the need arise. You cannot train the guard out of a guard dog or take the keen senses out of a watchdog, but you can have them respect, and listen to your commands happily. You do not want the dog to own the baby, own you, or your home. All dogs need boundaries. It is a good idea to set the baby room as one of those boundaries. As soon as you know what room will be your nursery stop allowing your dog into that room. Not by simply closing the door, but by leaving the door open and not allowing the dog to enter. This way when the baby does come home you will be sending a signal to the dog that the baby is higher in the order, as the baby will be allowed into a room to which they are not. If you are going to allow your dog up on the beds and couch make sure it is at times you invite them. Take extra care to insure the dog is not pushing you out of the spot or owning the furniture. Think about whether or not you are going to want a dog jumping up onto the furniture when you have a baby in your arms, or a bassinet seat that might be placed on a couch. If the answer is no and you are not going to want a dog jumping up where your baby might be, start training your dog to stay down. It is very easy for a dog to begin to believe they own your furniture, this includes the bed. I cannot stress enough how important daily exercise in the form of a pack walk is to the stability of a dog, both mental and physical. Before the baby comes home make sure your dog heels on a lead. This is a very important human-to-dog communication. Pack leader goes first. When you allow your dog to walk ahead of you or enter and exit door and gateways before you, you are communicating to the dog that they are before you in the order. Teach your dog to follow YOU rather than you following THEM. Therefore you must teach the dog to walk beside or behind the stroller, not in front. If you cannot make your dog heel it is time to work on perfecting your walk. You want your dog to be following your baby, not leading your baby. After the baby is born and before the baby comes home from the hospital, have someone bring an object that contains the baby’s scent to the dog. Place the object on the floor and tell your dog to leave it. Only allow the dog to smell it from a distance. They should be close enough to smell it, but do not allow them to touch it, keeping a reasonable distance. That scent is not going to be something they are going to be allowed to own. The scent needs to be associated with space and respect. The Day Baby Comes Home: The day the baby comes home, have someone walk the dog to drain their energy. I realize times are very busy when babies are born, however do not neglect the needs of your dog.. An extra long walk the day the baby comes home is ideal to insure they are calm when the baby comes through the door. You do not want the dog to associate the baby with negative emotions. Therefore make sure you are feeling confident. Deal with the dog in a firm but calm manner. Refrain from becoming angry, anxious, nervous or any other negative emotion. Do not let your dog rush, crowd or jump on the person holding the baby. If your dog normally does this you need to work on this issue before the baby comes home. Dogs who are respectful give space to their pack leaders. A subordinate dog would never dream of jumping up on their pack leader in that manner. Do not allow the dog to immediately get their nose on the baby. A dog’s senses are keen and they can smell the baby from a reasonable distance. Boundaries need to be established. Especially at feeding time. A subordinate dog would never dream of invading the privacy of a mother and her puppies. Do not allow your dog to invade your space. Correct any anxious barking or whining and ne consistent with your dog at all times. Do not neglect their exercise needs. Keep their energy in check and always be your dog’s calm, firm, confident pack leader. All family members must be on board with showing leadership and providing exercise. Doing this will insure a safe, respectful, strong bond between baby and dog for years to come.

MY FAVOURITE – FABULOUS – FANTASTIC AND FUN STUFF By far, one of my most favorite and fantastic events is when I am enlightened by new information I had no idea was out there. I love learning, and get all excited when I grow my “grey matter”. I was in B.C. last week and my sister was talking about alkaline and acid forming foods. I have always had a allergic disease called “angio-adema” which causes my face, tongue and throat to swell – I also get large hives on my body. I did some research on the alkaline vs. acid forming foods and was surprised to find out Human blood pH should be slightly alkaline (7.35 - 7.45). Below or above this range could cause unhealthy symptoms and disease. A pH of 7.0 is neutral. A pH below 7.0 is acidic. A pH above 7.0 is alkaline. An acidic pH can occur from, an acid forming diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions or any process that deprives the cells of oxygen and other nutrients. The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals. If the diet does not contain enough minerals to compensate, a build up of acids in the cells will occur. I’m wondering if my pH is to acidic which may be causing my allergy problems. I know lots and lots of people suffer from allergies so I really wanted to pass this information on to you – perhaps our suffering could be behind us – Yahoo! An acidic balance will: decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease it’s ability to repair damaged cells, decrease it’s ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumour cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness. The reason acidosis is more common in our society is mostly due to the typical diet, which is far too high in acid producing animal products like meat, eggs and dairy, and far too low in alkaline producing foods like fresh vegetables. Additionally, we eat acid producing processed foods like white flour and sugar and drink acid producing beverages like coffee and soft drinks. To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60% alkaline forming foods and 40% acid forming foods. To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods. Generally, alkaline forming foods include: most fruits, green vegetables, peas, beans, lentils, spices, herbs and seasonings, and seeds and nuts. Generally, acid forming foods include: meat, fish, poultry, eggs, grains, and legumes. You can look up a list of alkaline and acidic foods on the internet, so you can see if you are eating too much of one or the other. By: Kathryn Hartwell Page 34

LIFE Lines

This monthly column by Jody Brown, is designed to help you make better connections and live happier lives. Sometimes we just need to ask the question. Dear Lifelines: How does someone become more ‘mindful’. I keep hearing this word being thrown around and I don’t really understand what it means. “Life is not lost by dying! Life is lost Curious to be mind-full. Minute by minute, day by dragging day, In all the thousand, small, uncaring ways…” Stephen Vincent Benet Dear Curious, Thanks for your question. There seems to be a lot of interest and information right now in the media about being mindful, including various types of mindful living practice and forms of meditation. Essentially, being mindful is being conscious of the present moment that you are experiencing. The goal is to be totally present in mind and body, meaning that you aren’t busy thinking about the next item on your ‘to do’ list or what you should have said during a conversation at last night’s dinner party. You are aware of where you are, who you are with and you are engaged in the moment as close to 100% as is possible. You notice instantly when someone is present for you in the moment and practicing being mindful. They are focused on you, listening and interacting to what you say with a high degree of awareness. They might ask for clarification about what you are saying so that they can understand exactly what you mean during the conversation. They won’t be checking their phone, updating their Facebook status or politely cutting you off to send out random texts. Being in the presence of someone who makes you their sole focus is truly a special feeling. Sadly, this experience is really a rare situation in our busy, highly technological society. Our children likely suffer the most as our attention chronically becomes pulled from one direction to another. Kids quickly learn to behave like us as is evidenced by our struggles to draw their attention away from their own media devices and overly-involved lives. Perhaps it would benefit all of us to set aside specific times to turn off our media and communication devices and take a break from the demands that we find ourselves encumbered with. During these times we can make specific efforts toward taking time to breathe, enjoy the moment, and engage with those around us in a meaningful way. One way to start this practice is to just focus on one area of your life, perhaps one type of situation only – like mealtimes or after work times - and make a concerted effort to create a change towards being more mindful. For instance, you might decide to turn off the television at mealtimes or wait to read the newspaper later in the day instead of at the breakfast table. Maybe you want to set some boundaries for electronic devices so that you can have some clear, responsive and meaningful conversations with your children before they head off for their school day. It might seem like a challenge initially – and it will be effortful - but the benefits of your positive energy and calm presence for those around you will likely beat out the Nintendo system each time, if you are truly focusing your efforts in a genuine way to engage and be truly present for them. Sincerely, Lifelines

BODY PARTS –

THE HUMAN BABY STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT Although the human baby is not really a body part, it is a part of the woman’s body for nine months; so, it is a body part for a while and the development of a baby is truly a miracle of life. Week 1 & 2 - Gestational Age: Your menstrual period has just ended, and your body is getting ready for ovulation. For most women, ovulation takes place about 11 - 21 days from the first day of the last period. During intercourse, several hundred million sperm are released in the vagina. Sperm will travel through the cervix and into the fallopian tube. If conception takes place, the sperm penetrates an egg and creates a single set of 46 chromosomes called a zygote, which is the basis for a new human being. The fertilized egg spends a couple days traveling through the fallopian tube toward the uterus, dividing into cells; it is called a morula. The morula becomes a blastocyst and will eventually end up in the uterus. Anywhere from day 6-12 after conception, the blastocyst will imbed into the uterine lining and begin the embryonic stage. Week 3 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Week 1): The embryo is going through lots of basic growth at this time, with the beginning development of the brain, spinal cord, heart, and gastrointestinal tract. Week 4 & 5 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 2 & 3): Arm and leg buds are visible, but not clearly distinguishable. The heart is now beating at a steady rhythm. The placenta has begun to form and is producing some important hormones including hCG. There is movement of rudimentary blood through the main vessels. The early structures that will become the eyes and ears are forming. The embryo is ¼ inch long by the end of these weeks; that’s teeny-tiny! Week 6 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Week 4): The formation of the lungs, jaw, nose, and palate begin now. The hand and feet buds have webbed structures that will become the fingers and toes. The brain is continuing to form into its complex parts. A vaginal ultrasound could possibly detect an audible heartbeat at this time. The embryo is about a ½ inch in length. Week 7 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Week 5): At 7 weeks gestation, every essential organ has begun to form in the embryo’s tiny body even though it still weighs less than an aspirin. The hair and nipple follicles are forming, and the eyelids and tongue have begun formation. The elbows and toes are more visible as the trunk begins to straighten out. Week 8 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Week 6): The ears are continuing to form externally and internally. Everything that is present in an adult human is now present in the small embryo. The bones are beginning to form, and the muscles can contract. The facial features continue to mature, and the eyelids are now more developed. The embryo is at the end of the embryonic period and begins the fetal period. The embryo is about 1 inch long and is the size of a bean. Weeks 9 thru 13 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 7 thru 11): The fetus has grown to about 3 inches in length and weighs about an ounce. The genitalia have clearly formed into male or female, but still could not be seen clearly on an ultrasound. The eyelids close and will not reopen until the 28th week of pregnancy. The fetus can make a fist, and the buds for baby teeth appear. The head is nearly half the size of the entire fetus. Weeks 14 thru 16 - Gestational Age (Fetal age - Weeks 12 thru 14): The fetus’s skin is transparent and a fine hair called lanugo begins to form on the head. The fetus begins sucking and swallows bits of amniotic fluid. Fingerprints, which individualize each human being, have now developed on the tiny fingers of the fetus. Meconium is made in the intestinal tract and will build up to be the baby’s first bowel movement. Flutters may be felt in the mom’s growing abdomen as the fetus begins to move around more. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Sweat glands have developed, and the liver and pancreas produce fluid secretions. The fetus has reached 6 inches in length and weighs about 4 ounces. Weeks 17 thru 20 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 15 thru 18): The baby has reached a point where movements are being felt more often by the mom. The eyebrows and eyelashes grow in, and tiny nails have begun to grow on the fingers and toes. The skin of the fetus is going through many changes and begins to produce vernix at the twentieth week. Vernix is a white pasty substance that covers the fetus’s skin to protect it from amniotic fluid. A stethoscope could hear a fetal heartbeat now. The fetus has reached a length of 8 inches and weighs about 12 ounces. You cannot believe how it feels the first time you feel that little baby inside you moving around – it is an OMG moment and you feel your heart racing – it is truly spiritual. Weeks 21 thru 23 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 19 thru 21): Lanugo now covers the fetus’s entire body. The fetus is beginning to have the look of a newborn infant as the skin becomes less transparent while fat begins to develop. All the components of the eyes are developed. The liver and pancreas are working hard to develop completely. The fetus has reached about 10-11 inches in length and weighs about 1 - 1 ¼ pounds. This is when your tummy really is starting to be round and the time when people are starting to notice that you are going to be a mommy. Weeks 24 thru 26 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 22 thru 24) Beginning the third trimester: If your baby was delivered now, it could survive with the assistance of medical technology. The fetus has developed sleeping and waking cycles and mom will begin to notice when each of these takes place. The fetus has a startle reflex, and the air sacs in the lungs have begun formation. The brain will be developing rapidly over the next few weeks. The nervous system has developed enough to control some functions. The fetus has reached about 14 inches in length and weighs about 2 ¼ pounds. All my babies really liked to move around at night then I went to bed – that seemed to be their playtime. Weeks 27 thru 32 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 25 thru 30): The fetus really fills out over these next few weeks, storing fat on the body, reaching about 15-17 inches long and weighing about 4-4 ½ lbs by the 32nd week. The lungs are not fully mature yet, but some rhythmic breathing movements are occurring. The bones are fully developed but are still soft and pliable. The fetus is storing its own calcium, iron and phosphorus. The eyelids open after being closed since the end of the first trimester. Can you imagine opening your eyes for the first time ever?! Weeks 33 thru 36 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 31 thru 34): This is about the time that the fetus will descend into the head down position preparing for birth. The fetus is beginning to gain weight more rapidly. The lanugo hair will disappear from the skin, and it is becoming less red and wrinkled. The fetus is now 16-19 inches and weighs anywhere from 5 ¾ lbs to 6 ¾ lbs. Weeks 37 thru 40 - Gestational Age (Fetal Age - Weeks 35 thru 38): At 38 weeks the fetus is considered full term and will be ready to make its appearance at any time. Mom may notice a decline in fetal movement as the fetus is now filling the uterus with little room to move. The fingernails have grown long and will need to be cut soon after birth. Small breast buds are present on both sexes. The mother is supplying the fetus with antibodies that will help protect against disease. All organs are developed, with the lungs maturing all the way until the day of delivery. The fetus is about 19 - 21 inches in length and weighs anywhere from 6 ¾ lbs to 10 lbs. And trust me on this – by this time Mom is ready to see her new baby and really tired of being pregnant, the days drag on and every morning you wake up thinking and hoping today is the day. Now, the delivery is another thing – but when that little miracle is placed in your arms you forget everything else and your life is changed forever. By: Kathryn Hartwell www.thenewsyneighbour.com

EASY FITNESS TIPS

1. Drink it up. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. It helps to keep you feeling full before and during eating. Water helps to flush the body, whereas a dehydrated system will retain the water it gets through foods, sodas and coffee. Water also hydrates the skin to keep you fresh and glowing. Keep a bottle in your cup holder, at your desk or in your tote. 2. I’ll have it on the side. When ordering or preparing a salad, get the dressing on the side. As you eat, dip your fork into the dressing before taking a bite. This easy step can cut up to 500 calories while maintaining the taste. 3. 50 paces. Wear a pedometer. You can use the general rule that 2000 steps is one mile and walking a mile burns 100 calories. Being able to keep an eye on the numbers will motivate you to push yourself a little further each day. 4. Take a stand. Instead of falling onto the couch the moment you get home, stand at the counter to read the mail. “No matter how still you may think that you are standing, you’re still in the 5 essentials for good health some form of motion. FITNESS FOR YOUR HEALTH

The most common excuse for not working out is being too tired. But working out is exactly what your body needs to prevent you from being exhausted. Before you start working up a sweat, keep these pointers in mind, and remember to talk to your doctor before beginning or revising an exercise regimen. The Benefits of a Morning Workout ~ Exercise right after getting up to help relieve stress, improve your mood and signal your body that it’s time to start the day. Go outside if you can - being exposed to natural light in the morning, whether you’re exercising or not, can improve your sleep at night. The Benefits of an Evening Workout ~ Vigorous exercise in the late afternoon or early evening may help you get a good night’s sleep. Working out raises your body temperature above normal a few hours before bed, allowing it to start falling just as you’re getting ready for bed, and help ease you into dozing off. Cardio Is Key ~ Strength-training, stretching, yoga, and any other types of exercise have their benefits, but nothing matches the sleep-enhancing powers of a cardiovascular workout. When your heart rate is up and your muscles are pumping for at least 20 minutes, you’ll end up sleeping sounder and longer.

Straight from the runways of Fashion Week in New York, this fall’s trends are quite the opposite of what this past spring’s makeup trends were. Fall 2011 brings us bold eyebrows, bold lips, smoky eyes, and flawless skin. Now all of this likely sounds quite normal, or ‘do-able’ to you... except for the bold eyebrows. Now, don’t be scared when I say bold brows. I don’t mean the huge caterpillar-looking ones. I’m talking about having full, yet neat brows. Darker, yet shaped. Think brows like Brooke Shields, not the ones you see that look plucked within a millimeter of their lives. It can take time and practice to master a perfectly sculpted and properly filled-in brow, so, in the meantime, I’ll give you a couple tips to follow by. When filling in your brows, the highest point of your brow should never exceed the outer edge of your iris. Also, if you take your pencil, and vertically line it up from the outer corner of your eye straight up, that is the point in which the length of your eyebrow should not go past. If you’re having difficulty with creating that perfect shape, you can purchase eyebrow stencils from any beauty department or drugstore. Also it is important to ensure you have a good brow pencil that matches your brow colour! (If you can recall back to my previous columns, don’t forget to use that white eyeliner trick to accentuate and highlight your brow bone). Once those bold, sculpted brows are complete, move on to smoking out those eyes. Now, a lot of women think that creating a smoky eye only involves using black. In actuality, you can and should try creating a smoky look using other colours like navy, forest greens, dark browns, and even burgundies. Make sure the liner you use is a soft pencil, one that smudges easily with a Q-Tip or fingertip. Apply your colour of choice by lining your upper and lower lash line, then smudge it out. If you want to intensify it, apply the liner into your inner rim (waterline) as well. I know black is a safe shade, but this fall, try to step it up a notch and be more daring, and more trendy, by using colour! Next, get that skin looking flawless! The key to having flawless looking skin is finding the perfect foundation, especially one that matches your skin tone. Always test it by applying it on your jawline, and looking at it in natural light. Then finish it off by dusting your face with an illuminating powder to give it that luminous glow! Finally, to complete your sexy, trendy fall face, you will need a bold lip! You can choose something bright or something a bit more classic, or deeper such as a nice crimson, burgundy, or bright red. Use a good lip primer prior to your application, and then apply your colour with precision. You can use a lip liner to define and shape your lips if you like, but just make sure the colour matches your lipstick. The best thing about having a bold lip, and this entire overall look, is that it goes with everything, from your LBD, to even just jeans, a tee, and some chic shoes! No matter your style, with this season’s trends, you will be right on falls schedule! Page 40

Health Food Stores I love health food stores. I could spend hours just snooping up and down the aisles. It’s almost as good as an old book store – I get that feeling of anticipation of finding some lost treasure, some old book with a signature of the owner inside the cover, a name from days gone by, a life with a story behind it; someone who treasured the book enough to write their name inside the cover, showing ownership of a story they loved. Well, the things on the health food shelves are less romantic; but all the same, they are new and interesting natural remedies for what ever ails you. I decided to do some research on a few of the active ingredients listed on the back of one of these 100% natural remedies – called Rescue Energy – a natural Fatigue remedy, just for those days when you’re feeling a little tired and need a pick-me-up. The box said caffeine-free and trusted for over 70 years in 66 countries – it has to be good, Right? But what kind of miracle could it be when all you do is spray one little spray on your tongue? “Olea europaea” and “Helianthemum nummularium clematis vitalba” were listed on the box; what on earth are these natural ingredients and where did they come from? Olea europaea helps restore emotional vitality when you are tired after making an effort (sounds like what we do every day of our lives!). As it turns out, it is the oil from a special olive tree leaf, which was first cultivated in Crete and Syria over 5000 years ago. This proprietary phytochemical extract is not only safe, but is also a nontoxic immune system builder, promotes a healthy body and contains 7% oleuropein, and its remarkable phyto-compound has been the subject of new and exciting research and is indicated in studies to provide unique healthpromoting properties. Olea europaea is the Bach Flower Remedy for tiredness and exhaustion after an effort of some kind, such as hard physical or mental labour, or the long struggle against illness. The remedy is given to restore feelings of strength and the faith needed to continue. Dr. Bach’s Description: “Those who have suffered much mentally or physically and are so exhausted and weary that they feel they have no more strength to make any effort. Daily life is hard work for them, without pleasure.” Well, my goodness, it sounds like a natural miracle to me! Now what about “Helianthemum nummularium clematis vitalba”? It is a clematis flower. It is said to create focus when ungrounded, give you patience with problems and people, balance your mind when losing control and soften the impact of shock. They say a flower can do all that; amazing! Mother Nature has given us all the natural remedies we need. Dr. Edward Bach was a Harley Street doctor and well known Physician, bacteriologist, homeopath and Researcher. Despite the success of his work with orthodox medicine, he felt dissatisfied with the way doctors were expected to concentrate on disease and ignore the people who were suffering from them. He was inspired by his work with homoeopathy but wanted to find remedies that would be purer and less reliant on the products of disease. So in 1930, he gave up his lucrative Harley Street practice and left London, determined to devote the rest of his life to a new system of medicine that he was sure could be found in nature. So there you have it – a description of just one little bottle of goodness found on the shelf. See why I love health food stores? They are filled with all sorts of little treasures! Kathryn Hartwell

Walking or Running? Self-Massage Can Help!

Walking or Running are great ways to get exercise, and whether you are just starting out or have already started a routine, here is something you should consider to do before and after your routine: self-massage! You should already be doing stretching and warm up before and after your routine, so why not add self-massage and increase your recovery time?! Self-Massage is done with simple massage techniques, such as long strokes, kneading, and friction to the larger muscles. This can increase blood flow and relax the muscles, which in turns warms up the muscles, which will help prevent injuries. By using self-massage, the difference in strength recovery between massaged muscles and non-massaged was significant - 60% strength compared to 15%. Researchers have also shown that the massaged muscles had fewer damaged muscle fibres and no sign of white blood cells present to repair muscle damage. The massaged muscles showed less sign of swelling, weighing 8% less than the non-massaged muscles. Just by knowing this, why not add self-massage to your warm up and cool down routine? It does not have to be complicated! Before you stretch, rub your larger muscles with a little pressure, working from the bottom up. You can also take your hand and tap your larger muscles too. Then do a quick jogging on the spot and then do some simple stretches. Now it is time for that walk or run! Please remember to do the same at cool down but without the jogging on the spot. Have a wonderful walk or run! By: Cynthia Barnesky www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais Join me each month as I review a great read. My passions are fantasy and science-fiction, but I do read other genres. Really, I do. I also lean toward local authors, when possible, as I think we have a wealth of artistic talent here in Alberta. I currently live in Strathmore with my wife, Connie, and my two children, Kieran and Maia-Lynn. I’ve been a teacher for most of the time we’ve lived in the province, which is over a decade now. My debut novel, MetalMagic: Talisman, was released in September, 2010, and I’m diligently working on the sequel—that is, when I’m not reading books or writing for my column. Subgirl

Samantha Adkins Createspace, March 2011 Middle Grade, ages 8-12, 162 pages ISBN: 978-1460957042

Seeing as it’s back to school time once again, I thought it fitting to review a book with an educational theme. This month’s read is Subgirl, by Samantha Adkins. It’s the story of Jordana Simkins, a young prodigy who’s managed to complete her university education by the age of twelve. She’s always dreamed of being a teacher, so instead of pursuing a PhD, Jordana decides to try her hand in the classroom, first. One of the characteristics that work in her favour is the fact that she’s very mature-looking for her age; Jordana is taller than many adult women and her long, dark hair and glasses add to the overall effect. Like this example, Adkins takes a number of opportunities in the book to show the reader how our perceived less-than-positive qualities can, in fact, become advantages. They are important messages for young readers to hear. Although it’s not possible for her to work for pay at twelve years of age, Jordana is able to begin substitute teaching in kindergarten to grade four classrooms and have the normal pay deposited into a scholarship. This arrangement allows her to be in charge of a classroom where she’s not too close in age to her students, as well as get around the legal issue of being too young to engage in paid employment. All seems to be in place for Jordana to have a successful experience doing something she’s always wanted to do, while at the same time preparing herself for future studies. Standing in the way, though, is the single administrator to vote against Jordana’s bid to become Subgirl, Ms. Luella Trites, a vicesuperintendent with the division. It seems that Ms. Trites has taken a very thorough disliking to the idea of Jordana teaching, and the young hopeful will need to draw not only on her intelligence and wit, but also her maturity and strength of resolve to deal with the obstacles placed in her path. Written by an author who is very familiar with substitute teaching, Subgirl presents a realistic portrayal of the challenges and rewards of teaching in today’s society. Written with a middle-grade audience in mind, this well-written and humourous story is a safe bet for eight-to-twelve-year-olds who have a keen interest in teaching, or who simply want to read an entertaining book about the exploits of a young person they will easily be able to identify with. An optimist sees the glass as half full, a pessimist sees it as half empty, an engineer sees it as made twice as large as it needs to be, and a skeptic wonders what is the agenda behind the thinking of the first three… As a consumer, we should be skeptics. We want it all and are told we deserve it all. Unfortunately, our wish fulfillment is not what is driving many of the changes in large appliances. Modern appliances are much more efficient and adapt to usage type situations that older style appliances would not even have attempted to address. The driving force behind many appliance innovations is mandated energy consumption and water use guidelines. Appliance manufacturers have had to comply with them while at the same time providing the consumer with an appliance that costs less and does more. To make this possible, new appliances rely heavily on advances in electronics. The electronics in many new appliances will actually sense the conditions that the unit is operating in and adjust the operation for maximum efficiency and best results. A new fridge may actually sense when it needs to defrost itself. Some will cause the freezer to get colder immediately before a defrost cycle. This helps prevent freezer burn and uses less energy to return the temperature to normal after the defrost cycle. Considering the efficiencies of new fridges, it is possible to run at least three new fridges on the energy it takes to run one old model. Some new refrigerators never actually turn off the compressor but still use less energy than their older counterparts. There may be up to three different control boards in one washing machine. A very common comment from consumers is that their new super efficient appliance (mainly washing machines or dishwashers) takes much longer to run a cycle than the old one. Let’s look at an example of the kinds of energy used to clean in a washer or dishwasher; Thermal (hot water), Mechanical (agitator/spinning drum) and Chemical (detergent). The old style top loading washer used lots of these and took a fairly short time to do it. Generally, the clothes were fairly clean and somewhat spun dry when the cycle was done. The new high efficiency washers (top or front load) use much less of all the energy types and the clothes are spun considerably dryer than the older style washers at the end of the cycle. To paraphrase a writer named Larry NIVEN, ‘TANSTAAFL’ – There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. We pay for this higher efficiency with longer run times. Your energy and water savings, as well as cleaner, longer lasting clothes will more than justify the extra time. In the case of new HE washers, you do get some of this time back as they hold larger loads therefore less laundry loads in a week. Cost wise, appliances are the same or less than they were in the ‘good old days’. If you find an old catalogue – check out the prices. The difference is new appliances cost much less to use. As a savvy consumer, you need to know what you require and which appliance will best suit your needs. Hint: Those who frequently wear business or business casual clothes will appreciate the advantages of a steam featured dryer. As a shameless plug, various marketing organizations are reporting that many consumers are searching out smaller independent appliance dealers. These dealers must have an in-depth knowledge of their products and in some cases, may maintain their own service departments. That makes for a much more supported environment for the consumer. The purchase prices are usually competitive with the big boxers. An informed consumer will avail themselves of as much knowledge as possible while keeping a skeptical eye out. Although not directly involved with appliances, here are a couple of strongly recommended readings that will really help with that skeptical and informed viewpoint. They are actually used in some university courses (perhaps they should be used before the university level…) Is That A Fact? By Mark BATTERSBY (even the Edmonton Oilers are mentioned…..) Bad Science. RAINY DAY Two black and happy crows sitting on a fence, One named Rosie, the other named Vince. They said, “This rain is really bringing out the bugs, Juicy fat worms and ugly slimy slugs. Oh what a grand and wonderful day,” The crows hope this rainy day is here to stay! Two little children look out their window and say, “Let’s put on our rain gear and go outside to play. We’ll jump in the puddles and float our boats in them too. We’ll stay outside and play until we’re soaked through and through.” Now the farmer on the other hand has had about enough. He looks to the sky saying, “Turn off this wet stuff. The hay is under water, the flowers knocked off the crops, Its time to let the sun shine and pull out all the stops.” Happy birds or children playing, Growing crops or farmers praying. Because a Great Experience Begins with a Great Agent.TM www.thenewsyneighbour.com

1. It is always best to interview several agents before making your final choice. Make sure you pick someone you will be able to work with well. You house could be on the market for several months. 2. Know all of your rights and obligations. Have your realtor explain the contract in detail or have a lawyer look at it with you. Make sure to take the time to really read the contract over. 3. Always base your price on market value rather than needs and never on emotions. The Newsy Neighbour

Some Real Estate Advice CONTINUED...

4. Make sure the agent is taking out advertisements to promote your property. Ask where the property will be advertised and make sure it is up to your standards. 5. First impressions are important. Use attractive photos to advertise the listing. Make sure to de-clutter and get personal possessions and pictures out of the photos. Make sure the pictures are nice and bright, not dark. 6. Your house must have curb appeal. Make sure the outside is as attractive as the inside. First impressions are very important. 7. Make sure your house is clean, inviting and smells good before every open house and visit. 8. If the house isn’t selling, think about lowering the price. A house that sits too long on the market raises suspicion for buyers. 9. Take the first offer seriously. It’s often the best. Page 46

Teen Poverty in America We just spent several hours observing teenagers hanging out at our local mall. We came to the conclusion many teenagers in America today are living in poverty. Most young men we observed didn’t even own a belt; there was not one among the whole group. But that wasn’t the sad part. Many were wearing their father’s jeans. Some jeans were so big and baggy they hung low on their hips, exposing their underwear. I know some must have been ashamed their father was short, because his jeans hardly went below their knees. They weren’t even their father’s good jeans, for most had holes ripped in the knees and a dirty look to them. It grieved us, in a modern, affluent society like Canada, there are those who can’t afford a decent pair of jeans. I was thinking about asking my church to start a jeans drive for “poor kids at the mall.” Then on Christmas Eve, we could go Christmas carolling and distribute jeans to these poor teenagers. But here is the saddest part... it was the girls they were hanging out with that disturbed us most. Never, in all of our lives, have we seen such poverty-stricken girls. These girls had the opposite problem of the guys. They all had to wear their little sister’s clothes. Their jeans were about 5 sizes too small! I don’t know how they could get them on, let alone button them up. Their jeans barely went over their hipbones. Most also had on their little sister’s top; it hardly covered their midsections. Oh, they were trying to hold their heads up with pride, but it was a sad sight to see these almost grown women wearing children’s clothes. However, it was their underwear that bothered us most. They, like the boys, because of the improper fitting of their clothes, had their underwear exposed. We had never seen anything like it. It looked like their underwear was only held together by a single piece of string. We know it saddens your heart to receive this report on the condition of our Canadian teenagers. While we go to bed every night with closets full of clothes nearby, there are millions of “mall girls” who barely have enough material to keep it together. We think their “poorness” is why these 2 groups gather at the mall; boys with their short father’s ripped jeans, and girls wearing their younger sisters’ clothes. The mall is one place where they can find acceptance. So, next time you are at the mall, doing your shopping, and you pass by some of these poor teenagers, would you say a prayer for them? www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Fine Drycleaning

A woman brought a very limp duck into her Veterinarian. As she laid her & Coin Laundry pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the OnSite Dry Cleaning Same Day Available bird’s chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly Open • Laundry Drop Off (Wash & Fold) Everyday said, “I’m sorry, your duck has passed away.” The distressed woman • 10% Senior Discount • Shirt Service • Horse Blankets wailed, “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am sure” replied the vet. • Leather Club Jackets • Wedding Gowns (Preservation Boxes) “How can you be so sure?” she protested. “I mean you haven’t done any 316A 2nd Ave, Strathmore, AB Phone: 403-934-1807 testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something.” The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck’s owner looked in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head. The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room. The vet looked at the woman and said, “I’m sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck.” The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys, and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck’s owner, still in shock, took the bill. “$150!” she cried. “$150 just to tell me my duck is dead?!” The vet shrugged, “I’m sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it’s now $150.”
