The horse drawn dray, carting the prisoner was accompanied by an armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ‘’ONE LAST DRINK’’.

If he said YES it was referred to as ONE FOR THE ROAD. If he declined, that prisoner was ON THE WAGON. More history...

They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot & then once a day it was taken & sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive, you were “Piss Poor”. But worse than that were the really poor folk who couldn’t even afford to buy a pot. They “Didn’t have a pot to piss in” and were the lowest of the low.

Time Goes By… According to some homespun folklore, the time spent on chores may be good for the character but really, it’s just gone, and working your fingers to the bone results in bony fingers.

We are all somewhat aware of how developments in technology have freed up time from the drudge jobs; fun things like beating clothes with a rock down at the stream, or washing pots and dishes after heating enough water. There was an upside: we didn’t have to worry about mattress comfort or sleep problems; exhaustion is a great sleep aid. Of course, waking up feeling like you’ve spent the night in a cement mixer might mean that in spite of exhaustion, you needed a new mattress (or at least change the straw!).

While refrigeration has added to our health, longevity and meal time planning, a couple of other appliances are also reducing our ‘drudge work’ activity time.

After a while, these regional styles sound like a hodgepodge of chop suey in which, by the way, was invented in America, as was the revered fortune cookie. Many Chinese restaurants offer a number of regional cuisines on the same menu, so it is not that easy to distinguish the difference when all dishes are equally delicious. Here is a quick primer on the most prevalent Chinese cuisines found in America.

Canton Cuisine Cantonese cuisine originated from the areas of Guangdong Province and Hong Kong in southern China. Canton is an old port city that today is referred to as Guangzhou. Live fish and seafood are held in tanks just before being dispatched immediately for cooking. Cantonese sauces are mild and subtle so as to not overpower the freshness of the ingredients. Mandarin Cuisine Mandarin cuisine is the food of the northern imperial courts of old Peking, known today as Beijing. In this region, wheat instead of rice is widely used, as is a pale leafy cabbage, known as Napa cabbage in America. The crepe-like wraparound mu-shu pork and crispy Peking duck accompanied with steamed buns originated in this area. Mandarin cuisine, an elaborate style arising from the imperial days, is often intricately decorated with vegetables carved into flowers, animals, and designs. In another northern dish, Mongolian hot pot, diners cook their own meats and vegetables in a large boiling pot of flavourful broth at the table. Other popular Mandarin foods are pan-fried pot stickers, garlic and scallion Mongolian beef, and beggar’s chicken.

Shanghai Cuisine The Shanghainese have mastered the arts of braising and stewing so full-bodied flavours commingle on the tongue. Generally considered the cuisine of China is southeastern region of Zhejiang Province, the sauces tend to be rich due to slow cooking techniques and reduction of sauces. The area is also known for preserving food by pickling vegetables and curing meats. Noodle products are heartier as in Shanghai noodles. The region is sherry-coloured wine, Shao Xing, is exported worldwide and is an important ingredient in many dishes. Popular regional dishes are cold appetizer dishes such as drunken shrimp, and wine chicken, stewed “lion’s head” meatballs, sea cucumber with shrimp roe, and pickled greens with pork.

Sichuan Cuisine Chili peppers and red peppercorns are used in Sichuan (Szechuan in Cantonese) cooking to stimulate the taste buds and counter the bitter cold of winter. Sichuan dishes are considered spicy, although the heat is not immediate, it can creep up on you. Through pickling and salt-curing, the vegetables and meats of this region are preserved to last through the harsh winter. The combined flavours of vinegar with sweetly fried food originated in this central western region. Well known Sichuan dishes are Szechuan beef, stir-fried green beans, cold noodles with peanut sauce, and spicy stir-fried Ma-Po tofu.

Hunan Cuisine The food from Hunan is hot, hot, hot. It’s often difficult to distinguish Hunan from Sichuan cuisine, as many Chinese restaurants in North America tend to serve both regional styles side-by-side. The cuisines dovetail nicely as the two provinces also are neighbours in China’s heartland. The Hunanese use preserved basics such as hearty oils, garlic, and chili-based sauces. The stir-fried meats are often seared prior to stir-frying, creating sauces and dishes that exude comfort. Riley VanGelderen & Mitch Enders, who grew up in the Langdon/Chestermere area decided to go all out and grow beards for one year to raise money for Breast Cancer Research! Looking like two bushmen, they finally had a big ‘Beard Shaving’ party April 26th in Langdon. Now, much to the joy of all of their proud family and friends, they are back to looking clean cut and handsome! They were able to raise over $3,000.00 in honour of both of their Grandma’s who have battled breast cancer! A big congratulations to these two local characters!!

Planting A Herb Garden Mother’s Day is May 12th and what could be more special than planting an herb garden with your mother?

You can start your herbs indoors and after May 24th you can move them outdoors. Herbs are magical, aromatic and pretty and there are so many to choose from. They make your home look and smell pretty and can be used for much more than just seasoning your salads.

The big questions lingering in your mind are, what herbs would I plant? Which would I use the most? Do I want herbs that are pretty just for decorating or herbs I can make my own tea with? What are the best plants for my first herb garden?

Herbs and gardens give you the opportunity to share time with your family discovering and learning. Kids love to grow plants, and herbs are easy as you can grow them indoors.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get started. You can buy inexpensive pots at the dollar store or use coffee tins or ice cream buckets; pretty much anything. Choose a container large enough to accommodate growth and make sure it has ample drainage holes. Also make sure to buy a tray for underneath your pot, to collect and drain off excess water.

Decide on which herbs will delight you the most. Plant your seeds and place in front of a window that gets lots of natural sunlight. For this to be successful, the spot you choose will have to get six hours of sunlight each day and not be so hot in the afternoons. Voila! Your own magical herb garden.

Have your children watch for the sprouts coming through the soil and water the pots, but not too much water – just enough! The three main things herbs will need to grow lush and flavourful is good light, water and the right nourishment.

Other things to keep in mind are: Give plants plenty of room. Plant descriptions and seed packets will offer spacing recommendations, and even though potted plants don't typically grow to full size, give them generous accommodations.

Water plants regularly and make sure the pots drain thoroughly after watering. One of the biggest plant killers is stagnant water hanging around long enough to rot plant roots.

Turn plant pots frequently to keep plants growing evenly on all sides.

Go light on the fertilizer. Most herbs like moderate to poor soil. Remember, more houseplants are killed with kindness than through neglect.

Wait for plants to reach 6 to 8 inches (15.24 to 20.32 centimeters) in height before harvesting any leaves, and only take about a quarter of the plant or less at any one time. After you've snipped an herb's leaves, wait for that much or more to grow back before harvesting again. If you're a parsley or oregano fanatic, it might be a good idea to keep more than one plant going at a time.

The Most Commonly Used and Grown Herbs

Each herb has a different aroma and taste. Choose ones you use the most often in your cooking

Rosemary is an evergreen herb that is generally found in warm climates, but that will do well inside in

containers in colder areas. It has a strong aroma and flavour and is generally used in Mediterranean cuisine.

Basil is a member of the mint family. The most popular kind of basil used in Italian cooking is sweet basil, but another widely known type is Thai basil.

Chives are a member of the onion family. They grow in clumps like grass, producing hollow, thin leaves.

Another popular variety is garlic chives. Both varieties have a mild flavour that is great with eggs or on top of baked potatoes.

Oregano is another Mediterranean herb with a strong flavour; it’s a favourite in Greek and Mexican cuisine. Another herb with a similar flavour profile is Marjoram.

Thyme has woody stems with small intensely aromatic green leaves. It is a classic addition to French cuisine and pairs well with numerous vegetables, meats and egg dishes.

Parsley

comes in two main varieties: curled leaf and Italian. The Italian variety is milder and most often used in cooking. It adds freshness to a dish.

Sage is a beautiful herb, with a soft grayish green colour. Like oregano and rosemary, it’s another strong herb that should be used sparingly.

Mint

comes in two main varieties: spearmint and peppermint. Peppermint is the stronger of the two and is the mint of choice for medicinal purposes like soothing upset stomachs. While spearmint is milder in flavour, either can be used for cooking purposes.

Who Is a Stranger?

Kids see strangers every day in stores, in the park, and in their neighbourhoods. Most of these strangers are nice, normal people, but a few may not be. Parents can protect their children from dangerous strangers by teaching them about strangers and suspicious behaviour, and by taking a few precautions of their own.

Who is a stranger?

A stranger is anyone that your family doesn’t know well. It’s common for children to think that “bad strangers” look scary, like the villains in cartoons. This is not only not true, but it’s dangerous for children to think this way. Pretty strangers can be just as dangerous as the not-so-pretty ones. When you talk to your children about strangers, explain that no one can tell if strangers are nice or not nice just by looking at them and that they should be careful around all strangers.

But don’t make it seem like all strangers are bad. If children need help--whether they’re lost, being threatened by a bully, or being followed by a stranger--the safest thing for them to do in many cases is to ask a stranger for help. You can make this easier for them by showing them which strangers are okay to trust.

Teachers, principals, and librarians are adults children can trust too, and they are easy to recognize when they’re at work. But make sure that you emphasize that whenever possible, children should go to a public place to ask for help.

You can help your children recognize safe strangers by pointing them out when you’re out in your town. Also show your children places they can go if they need help, such as local stores and restaurants and the homes of family friends in your neighbourhood.

Recognizing and Handling Dangerous Situations

Perhaps the most important way parents can protect their children is to teach them to be wary of potentially dangerous situations – this will help them when dealing with strangers as well as with known adults who may not have good intentions. Help children recognize the warning signs of suspicious behaviour, such as when an adult asks them to disobey their parents or do something without permission, asks them to keep a secret, asks children for help, or makes them feel uncomfortable in any way. Also tell your children that an adult should never ask a child for help, and if one does ask for their help, teach them to find a trusted adult right away to tell what happened.

Kids Section You should also talk to your children about how they should handle dangerous situations. One ways is to teach them “No, Go, Yell, Tell.” If in dangerous situations, kids should say no, run away, yell as loud as they can, and tell a trusted adult what happened right away. Make sure that your children know that it is okay to say no to an adult in a dangerous situation and to yell to keep themselves safe, even if they are indoors. It’s good to practice this in different situations so that your children will feel confident in knowing what to do. Here are a few possible scenarios: • A nice-looking stranger approaches your child in the park and asks for help finding the stranger’s lost dog.

• A woman who lives in your neighbourhood but that the child has never spoken to invites your child into her house for a snack.

• A stranger asks if your child wants a ride home from school.

• Your child thinks he or she is being followed.

• An adult your child knows says or does something that makes him or her feel bad or uncomfortable.

• While your child is walking home from a friend’s house, a car pulls over and a stranger asks for directions.

What Else Parents Can Do

In addition to teaching children how to recognize and handle dangerous situations and strangers, there are a few more things parents can do to help their children stay safe and avoid dangerous situations.

The Outhouse

Although many people may think growing up with a brother or a son with special needs would be hard, but the opposite could not be truer. Geordie Praeker is an amazing gift, born into our family on August 12, 1992. Everyday he makes us laugh and has a way of putting a smile on people’s faces.

Geordie is a brother, son, uncle, cousin, nephew, grandson and friend to many around him. He lights up the room wherever he goes. He loves interacting with others and engaging in the community. He never misses a beat whether it is working in the community for UFA, Home Hardware, Geordie’s Goodies, or helping chase cows on the farm. He is always around to lend a helping hand.

Once there was a little boy that lived in the country. They had to use an outhouse, and the little boy hated it because it was hot in the summer and cold in the winter and smelled awful all the time. The outhouse was sitting on the bank of a creek and the boy determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the creek.

Geordie is very imaginative and started his own business after he graduated from high school. As a people person, his business affords him many opportunities to interact with people whether it’s about the cookie business or just a conversation starter.

The boy answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said, “Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn’t get into trouble because he told the truth.”

BODY PARTS I find that every year, as I age, the more and more I think about my health. I started juicing about two years ago and juice pretty much every single day.

I have found it really has made a difference in the way I feel and I’m hoping it might even help my body regenerate after all the years of abuse I have put it through. Drinking too much alcohol can, over time, damage your heart and raise your blood pressure. If you drink alcohol, you should do so moderately. For women, moderate drinking means one drink per day. For men, it means two drinks per day. One drink counts as: 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, 1½ ounces of 80-proof hard liquor.

Research suggests that moderate drinkers are less likely to develop heart disease than people who don’t drink any alcohol or who drink too much. Red wine drinkers in particular seem to be protected to some degree against heart disease.

Red wine contains flavonoids (FLAY-vuh-noidz), which are thought to prevent plaque buildup. Flavonoids also are found in: Red grapes, Berries, Apples, Broccoli.

On the other hand, drinking more than one drink per day increases the risks of certain cancers, including breast cancer.

And if you are pregnant, could become pregnant, or have another health condition that could make alcohol use harmful, you should not drink.

You have probably read or heard many success stories about people who have done calorie restrictive diets and have lost huge amounts of weight. What we don’t hear is how they are doing 1 month, 6 months, or 5 years down the road. I have yet to meet or hear of anyone who has kept the weight off. Typically, the dieter regains the weight they lost and then gains even more. This can be caused by a several different reasons, each being different from person to person. Usually, the #1 reason why calorie restrictive diets don’t work is because the dieter is hungry! When you’re hungry, your mood is affected, your decision making is hindered, and your hormones are even affected by hunger. Your energy levels are down; basically low calorie diets are not sustainable. Eventually, the dieter breaks down and binges.

When starting a low calorie diet, the dieter usually sees results on the scale right away. The drop on the scale is water weight, not fat loss. Then eventually this becomes a loss in lean mass. The body is built to survive, so it thinks there is a famine or drought. The body does what it does best – it adapts to survive, so it starts to burn lean mass (muscle) for fuel, while storing fat. Yes, the dieter gets smaller but they do not get leaner. Depending on the dieters choices they may actually increase their body fat.

Each person is different, holds and stores fat differently.

Remember: there is not one solution for weight loss, and low calorie diets only work for short periods of time and can do more damage than good.

I Love My Job This is even funnier when you realize it’s a true story! Next time you have a bad day at work think of this guy.

Rob is a commercial saturation diver for Global Divers in Louisiana.

He performs underwater repairs on offshore drilling rigs. Below is an e-mail he sent to his sister. She then sent it to radio station 103.2 FM in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, who was sponsoring a worst job experience contest. Needless to say, she won.

Hi Sis, Just another note from your bottom-dwelling brother.

Last week I had a bad day at the office. I know you’ve been feeling down lately at work, so I thought I would share my dilemma with you to make you realize it’s not so bad after all. Before I can tell you what happened to me, I first must bore you with a few technicalities of my job.

As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to the office. It’s a wet suit. This time of year the water is quite cool.

So what we do to keep warm is this: we have a diesel powered industrial water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature, and then pumps it down to the diver through a garden hose, which is taped to the air hose.

Now this sounds like a darn good plan, and I’ve used it several times with no complaints. What I do, when I get to the bottom and start working, is take the hose and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water... it’s like working in a Jacuzzi.

Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt started to itch. So, of course, I scratched it. This only made things worse.

Within a few seconds my butt started to burn. I pulled the hose out from my back, but the damage was done. In agony I realized what had happened.

The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish and pumped it into my suit. Now, since I don’t have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn’t stick to it... However, the crack of my butt was not as fortunate.

When I scratched what I thought was an itch, I was actually grinding the jellyfish into the crack of my butt.

I informed the dive supervisor of my dilemma over the communicator. His instructions were unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically.

Needless to say I aborted the dive. I was instructed to make three agonizing in-water decompression stops totaling thirty-five minutes before I could reach the surface to begin my chamber dry decompression.

When I arrived at the surface, I was wearing nothing but my brass helmet. As I climbed out of the water, the medic, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt as soon as I got in the chamber.

The cream put the fire out, but I couldn’t poop for two days because my butt was swollen shut.

So, next time you’re having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your butt.

Tips for Golf Putting

The putter must stay down through the ball to keep it on line. If it goes off to the right, you may have moved your head. Keep your head still, especially on short putts.

Before you putt, how do you pick a target? I look at the part of the cup I want the ball to roll over going in the cup. Look only at that part of the cup you want the ball to roll over going in the cup. Once you see it clearly, then look away to the ball. Now, focus on striking the ball solid and at the target. Remember the part of the cup you want the ball to roll over going in. Now imagine where the ball will have to come from to go in on that side or part of the cup. This is your line. This is the line you will be trying to putt your ball on, so choose it carefully. Once you have seen the line, find a spot in front of the ball that will aim you in that direction and line up on that spot. Next, think only of how hard - or better yet, the distance - you will have to stroke the ball. This is most important in golf putting. It determines how short or how far past you will roll the ball. This is why we practice! You don’t have to look back. Your mind can hold the target without another look. Trust me! This seems like a lot of things to do and to remember. But that’s what the routine is all about. Practice for feel and distance, as well as the routine. This is how to get it all right before you putt the ball. All putts should be attempted from the center of the putter. But on breaking putts (right-to-left and left-to-right), the zones of the putter come into play. If you strike the ball on the “heel” zone of the putter, on a downhill left-to-right putt, the physics of this stroke will create a putt that will start a little farther left than you might have intended.

But, this will give you more chances of making the putt.

Likewise if you strike the ball on the “toe” zone of the putter, on a downhill right-to-left putt, the physics of the stroke will create a putt that will start a little farther to the right than you might have intended. But, it will give you more of a chance to stay above the hole during the putt.

Tips For Golf Sand Shots

Golf sand shots are a must for the golfer who wants lower scores.

It is the easiest shot in golf because you don’t really hit the ball.

The ball position in a sand shot is very important because you must hit as much as two inches behind the ball to get it out of the sand.

This is done by playing the ball (ball position) off of your left heel.

This is the same place you would tee the ball up for your drive.

This position gives you the forward placement of the ball and is a place you are familiar with, so you are not trying to guess about the two inches. Now, you have the ball position straight. You must align your target to the left of the flag when around the green. You may ask why, but trust me on this one. As you lay your sand wedge flat to get the ball up and out of the sand, this will cause the ball to be directed to the right of any target you choose. When you are playing for par the best thing is not to get in the sand. But if you do get in a sand trap, the length of your swing should depend on the carry distance needed for the sand shot. This means that if you need the ball to carry a short distance, then your backstroke should not be too long.

But always remember to finish all the way through your swing. This is a common mistake by some golfers, plus it is one that is easily made when you are tired.

Tips For Golf Irons

The golf irons you choose to use should be a key factor in whether you swing slow or smooth. The length of your iron does matter.

Your golf irons and your swings are inter-related but it’s not necessarily how fast or how slow you swing a long or short iron. Remember, the longer the shaft of the iron, the slower the swing.

Don’t rush your swing; smooth is better than fast. With long iron clubs, most golfers have a tendency to hold on to the stroke - not letting the club release. So when you swing a long iron be certain to finish the swing. Ball position is important also if you want the ball airborne. Play the ball just forward of center. Try this and see if you get better results. But where are you going to put your results other than try to remember them? You need to get in the habit of keeping written notes of which club you used and how far you hit the ball. Short irons are used when you are within 150 yards of the green. They are the golf clubs you need to get close to the flag if possible. So, here is what you do. Because they are short-shafted, the tendency to swing them fast is a problem with some golfers.

Swing short golf irons with a smooth tempo, but finish all the way through the swing. If done correctly you will become accurate in hitting your target. Remember to swing smooth, not fast. Also be sure to document how your short golf irons are being used and how far the ball traveled. For half shots you can try to use what some might call a measured swing - from 8 o’clock to 4 o’clock, and 9 to 3.

What a summer to be a fan of golf in this province! The PGA Tour of Canada, the LPGA Tour and the Champions Tour will all make a stop in Alberta this year.

When Graham Delaet of Weyburn, Saskatchewan turned professional in 2007, I am not sure any Canadian golf fan realized we were potentially watching Canada’s next big PGA star. The former Canadian Tour rookie of the year had his breakout season in 2009 winning the ATB Financial Classic at Sirocco, a performance that vaulted him to player of the year honours and prepared him to become a regular on the PGA Tour in 2010. Master’s Champion Mike Weir won three times on the Canadian Tour before he rose to stardom on the PGA Tour.

Here is what many golf fans don’t know about the PGA Tour of Canada (formerly the Canadian Tour). There are no ropes! No special media badge is required to follow your favourite group. It’s almost like you are part of the pairing as you walk along shot for shot. Make no mistake, as “these guys are good!”

Earlier this year, the PGA Tour of Canada announced there will longer be a rotation between Edmonton and Calgary for the ATB Financial Classic presented by Telus. County Hills will host this year’s stop June 17 - 23, 2013 and Calgary will be a permanent home as the major sponsor is on the verge of signing a new 4 year contract.

“Calgary is a great golf city,” says John Windwick, Vice-President, Community Initiatives with ATB Financial. “For brand awareness and activation it’s easier to concentrate our efforts on one city and with the rebranding from the PGA Tour, it gives us more visibility across the province. We have already started the bid process for 2014 and beyond.”

The Shaw Charity Classic was born and will be held the week of August 26 – September 1, 2013. “We had an overwhelming positive response from our membership,” beamed Canyon Meadows GM Jim Hope on Sportstalk on News Talk 770. “This event is going to put Calgary and our province on the PGA landscape. The tour players love to golf, but they also love to fish and they love the mountains. We think Calgary will be one of the most attractive stops on the tour.”

The 54-hole stroke play tournament will have a purse of US $2 million and will be contested by a field of 81 Champions Tour professionals. Bernard Langer, Fred Couples, Tom Watson, Mark O’Meara and Tom Lehman are just a few of the big names to frequent this tour.

As the name suggests, charity will be a big winner this summer.

In 2012, tournaments on all five major Tours generated more than $122 million for local charitable organizations, bringing the tour’s all-time total of charitable contributions to more than 1.8 billion.

It’s only a matter of time before Calgary hosts a regular PGA tour event, but in the meantime, it’s going to be a summer to remember for local golf fanatics!

The ultimate goal for the PGA Tour of Canada is to have three summer events in Alberta. The Syncrude Boreal Open in Fort McMurray, the ATB Financial in Calgary and a stop in Edmonton but the provincial capital is still trying to secure a title sponsor.

The future of the Canadian Women’s Open is also a hot topic as CN announced earlier this year the rail company is ending its 8 year relationship after this summer’s stop at the Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton. The demise started when the LPGA failed to recognize the Open as their 5th major and instead gave that status to an event in France. It truly is unfortunate for the women’s game as Canada has been an important stop of the LPGA tour since 1966. Calgary’s Priddis Green hosted in 2009 as Suzann Pettersen stole the show. This year’s Canadian Open is scheduled for August 19-25, 2013.

There was a foursome of ladies about to play a par three, 165 yards long. Suddenly, out from the trees beside the fairway, a streaker ran across the open expanse of the fairway. Two golfers in Ireland were on a very foggy par 3. They could see the top of the flag but not the green. Not to worry, their caddies said they will watch, so, off they went.

When they reached the green and looked around, they found one ball 2 feet from the hole, the other in the hole.

The Caddies asked what ball they were using as they were unsure which one had holed out, both said they were using Top-Flite 2 balls. All decided the only way to find a solution was to talk to the Pro. After hearing the story, seeing the balls, congratulating them for their great shots, he asked the caddies, “OK, now which of them was using the orange ball?”

It was a sunny Saturday morning, and Mike was beginning his pre-shot routine, visualizing his upcoming shot, when a voice came over the clubhouse loudspeaker, “Would the gentleman on the ladies tee please back up to the men’s tee, please?”

Mike was still deep in his routine, seemingly impervious to the interruption. Again the announcement repeated, “Would the man on the women’s tee kindly back up the men’s tee?” Mike had enough. He shouted, “Would the announcer in the clubhouse kindly shut up and let me play my second shot?”

I do have to say though, when my swing is swinging and the ball is flying down the green, there is a certain sense of excitement, anticipation and accomplishment.

But what is the big attraction for men to play golf? There is no body contact, no car crashes and no cheerleaders, yet men love the game. They make up more than 80 percent of the TV audience for golf. This might simply be because they like watching a game they play themselves; men make up nearly 80 percent of the golfers in America, too. The questions still remains: why do so many guys play such a frustrating game?

And women want to know why a man will spend $1000 on a set of clubs, $500 on attire, $75 each time for green fees, and $25.95 for a new box of Callaway’s when he can’t even hit a green in regulation?

Todd Outcult explains it, as “Golf is the only game that involves nature the way that God intended it, and the way that Jack Nicklaus designed it. It is the only game that combines wind, grass, weeds, trees, sand and air with a full bag of four-letter words.

Golf is, perhaps, the only game that men feel they can still play from a prone position, or even if they are on a ventilator machine, and every man fancies that he is a great putter”.

John J. White has a list of 10 reasons why Old Men Play Golf: 10. Golf is unisex. When you turn 50, 40-year-old women start to look attractive.

9. You can flirt with a 20-year-old beer girl and not be beat up or arrested.

8. You can smoke those god-awful cigars and no one complains.

7. You can pee in the woods - again without being arrested.

6. Your wife aquacises because she’d rather have a root canal than play golf with you.

5. You can tell all those dirty jokes you used to tell at the office.

And the number one reason why old people play golf: Because it’s expensive as hell and they can afford it - so nyah!

John Blowers explains it this way: “First and foremost, the reason why men love golf is that it is more than a sport. It is a social event. There is no other sport in the world that gets players to mingle with other players actively while playing, or with the spectators, the press, the fans, and a host of other people on the course. It does not hurt either that there is wine, champagne, or the always popular beer being served after every round (and sometimes during it). That is why men love it.”

Another reason why men love golf is that it is a gentleman’s sport. Golf features no body contact or violent crashes, which are the stereotypical sport favourites of men. Golf is a game of honesty and integrity and is completely different than other sports in that respect. That is why it is considered to be a gentleman’s game.

It could also be linked to men’s instinctive desire to hit objects with sticks. You may think I am kidding, but this is actually one of the defense mechanisms of men, which could also explain why men love baseball, softball, hockey, and in a more petite sense, billiards. For whatever reason, men are obsessed with projectiles in motion, and hitting objects with a stick seem to be the most efficient primeval way of launching a projectile.

It is important to realize that there are a ton of reasons why men love golf.

So there you have it ladies, the next time your husband wants to play on your anniversary, keep in mind that he loves you too!

I just went through a week of having a sick husband at home (a whole week!). I feel frazzled and a bit edgy; the lines in my face have deepened and I actually broke the partial plate in my mouth (probably due to the grinding of my teeth!). You ladies who have had to endure a whole week with a sick husband know exactly what I am talking about. After the first few days, I desperately scoured the Internet looking for some magic potion I could give him to make him instantly better. Much to my relief, I actually found something! It does not work instantly but I’m telling you – I could see a vast improvement within a day! It would be an injustice not to share this with all of you so at the first sign of a sniffle from your husband, you can whip up a batch immediately and perhaps fend off the sickness before it takes hold. Your home may have the strong aroma of an authentic Greek restaurant and your eyes may burn a little, but it is all worth it. Trust me. Just burn some pretty scented candles. Now, you have all heard chicken soup is an old home remedy for a cold but garlic soup works much better and this garlic soup recipe will not only quickly help a cold, I’m thinking it will kill any other bug you may have in your system. It was originally called 44 Clove Garlic Soup but I have changed the name to “My Magic Potion Remedy For All That Ails You Soup”. It may not sound very luscious but you may be pleasantly surprised!

My Magic Potion Remedy For All That Ails You Soup 26 garlic cloves (unpeeled) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons (1/4 stick) butter 2 1/4 cups sliced onions 1 1/2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 18 garlic cloves, peeled Page 38

3 1/2 cups chicken stock or canned low-salt chicken broth 1/2 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese (about 2 ounces) 4 lemon wedges Preheat oven to 350°F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add 2 tablespoons olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper; toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool.

Squeeze garlic between fingertips to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl.

Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions and thyme and cook until onions are translucent, about 6 minutes. Add roasted chopped garlic and 18 raw garlic cloves (chopped) and cook 3 minutes. Add chicken stock; cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Divide grated cheese among 4 bowls and ladle soup over. Squeeze juice of 1 lemon wedge into each bowl and serve. You can blend the soup to make it creamy and add a bit of cream but I prefer leaving the little onion and garlic chunks intact. We actually quite enjoyed this extremely flavourful soup and talk about healthy!

Garlic is not only an antibiotic it is also an anti-fungal and anti-parasitic among many other things. It’s important for colds AND flu’s!

How About Garlic On Your Feet?

Yes, you read that right. Here’s what I do: I crush a few garlic cloves, put them in a little jar or bowl, and cover it just so in olive oil. In about a half hour, I rub the oil on my feet. Waking up your garden The “DO NOT DO” List:

• Do not walk on soil or lawn that is wet, as this causes

compaction. Compaction causes loss of air space and you will no longer be able to water from the surface. The soil dries as hard as cement and the roots of your plants or trees are unable to expand. Cultivating and weeding become much harder.

• Do not work soil that is wet. Again, your ability to water from the surface is compromised. ‘Glazing’ occurs, causing root barriers. The soil dries into hard clumps. SQUEEZE TEST: Take a handful of soil and squeeze in your hand. The resulting ball of soil should fall apart when poked with a finger. If it does not, then your soil is too wet to work. But if the soil refuses to form a ball, then the soil needs to be watered.

• Do not remove protective winter mulch too early or all at once. Not before the beginning of April to (as late as) mid-May. The mulch assists in prolonging dormancy and protects tender buds from frost injury.

• Do not rake your lawn too early. You have had guests all winter and didn’t even know. Ladybugs take refuge in your lawn, in piles of leaves and under dead plant material. When the weather warms and food becomes available, out they come!

Ladybugs love aphids and are a great natural pest control.

• Do not apply herbicide or weed-and-feed until the weeds are actively growing in order to make contact with the leaves.

• Do not apply mulch until the soil warms up. This would keep the soil cold and inhibit plant growth.

• Do not apply fertilizer until plants are actively growing and the roots can then pick up the fertilizer.

• Do not prune Maple or Birch until fully leafed out, or you will have an unsightly sap loss.

• Do no plant warm weather plant seeds until the soil warms up (beans, corn, squash).

The “TO DO” List:

When the soil has warmed up: • Do a walkabout and general clean up. This is a good time to plan where you need to add some spring blooming plants/fall bulbs or stepping stones.

• Add soil amendments and work into soil. Organic fertilizers: peat moss, composted manure, compost, bone meal, etc., assist in water holding capacity and lowers the PH. • Plant dormant trees, shrubs, and perennials when ground is workable.

• Cut back and remove dead plant material before plants grow too much.

• Weed and cultivate around the plants to loosen the soil. Watch those tender roots.

Exchange with fellow gardeners or start a new flower bed.

• Aerate and dethatch lawn. Allows the water and nutrients to penetrate to the roots.

Apply granular fertilizer and or compost when the soil is warm and workable.

• Apply mulch to keep soil moist and loose.

Mulch also moderates soil temperature and acts as a weed barrier (about 3” thick).

• Water planted areas that are very dry.

• Now is the time to plant perennial and cool weather annuals or vegetable seeds.

Hopefully this will help with that gardening fever that overtakes us all when we think spring is just around the corner and we want to sink our green thumbs into the soil.

So, spring is officially here, as are dandelions and all sorts of annoying weeds. However, before you reach for a chemical-based weed killer or herbicide, let’s consider an all-natural version that is safe for pets.

Weed Killer Recipe 1 gallon distilled vinegar, 1 cup household salt, 1 tbsp. dish detergent, spray bottle.

Heat this mixture on the stove, only until the salt dissolves. There is no need to boil the mixture, just heated enough to dissolve.

Then transfer to the spray bottle. You can also use a large pump sprayer to cover more area. This mixture will kill the vegetation it comes in contact with. Do not let it get on your flowers or grass, at least grass that you intend to keep. This mixture will be safe for you, your children, and your animals. Another good thing is that it is much cheaper than the chemical alternatives. Give it a try.

You may have to use this mixture more than once, but it is well worth one extra spray to avoid dangerous chemicals.

• Don’t trim too short close to stone retaining walls in hot weather; the stone robs the ground of moisture and holds heat. This is not good for the grass.

• Applying a good thick coat of mulch to your gardens keeps weeds down and holds moisture for your plants.

• Leaving the grass clippings on your lawn provides nutrients to your lawn and is beneficial to its health.

• Watering your lawn early or late in the day reduces the amount of evaporation that takes place during the very hot day, allowing more water to reach the root zone.

Recycle tips Newspapers can be applied as a smothering agent over a lawn area that you wish to convert into a flower bed. This trick lowers costs, as you do not have to go out and buy herbicide for the project; and it’s more conducive to green living to boot.

Plastic spoons and knives can serve as temporary plant labels.

Inscribe the plant name in pencil, as (somewhat counter-intuitively) it tends to hold up better against the elements than ink (even most magic-marker inscriptions tend to fade fast).

Ask a Garden Designer – Care and Maintenance of Containers and Bedding Plants Jeanette Shelley owns a greenhouse in Strathmore, Alberta. She has over 40 years of experience in greenhouse operation, floral arrangement and floral design.

Q: I bought these beautiful bedding plants, I want to make sure they survive when I transplant them. What advice can you give me?

The first thing you can do to make sure your plants survive is to harden them off. Hardening off is where the plants get used to strong sunlight, cool nights, and less-frequent watering.

When you bring your bedding plants home, leave them out during the day and shelter them at night in the garage or the house. Gradually increase the time outside for 2-7 days before transplanting. You may not have to do this if you buy plants later in the season. Be sure to ask!

Make sure the plants are watered really well a few hours before transplanting. When you are creating your containers or filling your garden beds, take extra care with the roots. Sometimes a plant has a tight root system which needs to be loosened a bit so the roots will spread out once they are in the larger pot or garden bed. Do this very gently.

If the plant looks like it is not doing very well, look to make sure there is soil around all the roots. Air on the roots dries them out Page 42

and means the plant cannot survive. Some plants just don’t like transplanting and they may take some time to recover.

Protect your newly transplanted plants from frost. We can have frost in the first part of June and if plants are not protected, they may die. This is another reason I am a big fan of containers - you can just bring the containers inside! I tell people to ‘tuck in’ the plants in their garden beds by covering them with old sheets, blankets or some other cloth cover. I never use plastic.

Q: Do I really need to fertilize my containers? What kind of fertilizer do I use and how often do I need to use it?

Yes, you need to fertilize. Most people don’t know that when bedding plants are grown in a greenhouse they come in a planting medium. This is not true soil so it needs to be fertilized regularly.

I recommend that you fertilize every time you water. The easiest way to do this is to prepare a very diluted fertilizer mixture in a pail or garbage can. Simply mix water and 20-20-20 (all purpose) fertilizer in the pail to use when you water.

Q: I’ve heard you should water in the morning, is this right?

Yes, I water in the morning to get the plants really hydrated before the heat of the day. When it gets hot, your plants ‘shut down’ and won’t absorb water very well. If you miss watering in morning, wait until it has cooled off in the evening. You may have to water every day in the hottest part of the summer.

Remember to water thorough and deep. The planting medium around the roots has peat in it. If it dries completely, the water runs through and you may have immerse the container or really soak around the plants to rehydrate the root ball.

I also remind clients that the wind can sometimes dry out your plants just as quickly as the heat of the sun. Watch for how sheltered your containers or beds are.

I mentioned making up a pail or garbage can with a diluted mix of water and fertilizer. This is great for plants since the water is air temperature. This is less of a shock to the plants than the cold water that comes from the hose.

Don’t forget your hanging baskets! They are often exposed to a lot of heat.

Q: My plants are looking spindly and they aren’t blooming anymore. What can I do?

If the plants are growing really quickly, they can look gangly rather than full and leafy. I do a little bit of pruning when they look like this. I use a pair of small pruners or kitchen scissors to cut back the taller ‘branches’ of the plant right where it meets the main stem.

I’ve already mentioned the importance of fertilizing and watering regularly. Keep it up and the plants will come back.

Remove dying blossoms to encourage more blooms. This is called ‘deadheading’. Pinch or cut off the brown or wilty flowers just below the blossom. It only takes a few minutes each day when I water to look at my containers or baskets and see if they need any extra attention.

Q: How can I get the most out of my bedding plant purchase?

I think that you can do a few things to get the most out of the money you spend on bedding plants.

The growing season in southern Alberta is very short. I like to use bigger plants when I fill containers for my clients. They get to enjoy the blooms and colour right away rather than waiting for the end of the season for their plants to look showy. Remember, if the plants are bigger, take extra care to water them well. The larger roots soak up more water.

Try to put your bedding plants where they are sheltered a bit from the wind. Last year, my daughter put her tomato plants in upside down containers. One day a really gusty wind came up and snapped the plants off at the base! One of the biggest reasons that bedding plants don’t thrive is the windy conditions here. The wind is hard on the stems of the plants and dries the plants out very quickly.

Most importantly, take the time to sit outside, have a cool drink, and enjoy your beautiful garden! I hope you are all looking forward to the outdoor growing season.

There are many reasons to garden using raised beds… poor soil conditions, lack of space, drainage issues and weather conditions are a few of the problems that can be addressed.

Let’s get started…

Raised Garden Bed Supplies: Four 2″x 8″ 8 foot in length, Four 2″x 8″ 4 foot in length, Four 24 inch Stakes, 16d (3 1/2″) galvanized decking nails, Landscaping fabric or plastic to line the interior, Claw hammer, level, Framing Square.

Mark out your area; keep in mind that you want to place your garden in the area of your property that gets the most sun. This bed is 8 feet long by 4 feet wide.

Remove any weeds or sod in the area that you are going to place your bed and dig a 2 to 3 inch deep trench for the framework to rest in.

Use 16d galvanized decking nails and a simple butt joint to assemble the frames; this is a simple yet sturdy joint that doesn’t need special tools. To make it stronger you can glue the joints (use glue made for exterior use) and use galvanized deck screws.

After assembling the bottom framework and placing into the trench…

Drive in the stakes to secure it into place; this will also help prevent the framework from heaving due to frost in the winter.

Fill in the trench to provide support to the frame.

Make sure that each section is level. Add second level of the frame, leveling and securing to the support stakes. Two levels will make your bed at least 12 inches in depth. In comes the soil, add a blend of topsoil and sand (3:1) 6 to 8 inches deep, then followed up with a layer of compost. Then it is time to plant.

Dear Lifelines, It’s Mother’s Day and I can’t seem to make my mom happy. She has been depressed for years since dad died. How can I help her out?

Hurting Dear Hurting, I’m sorry to hear about your Mom – losing someone close can be a huge transition and people adapt to the inevitable changes in their life all very differently. It would be wise to encourage your mom to keep in contact with her doctor or someone else capable of assessing her state in order to monitor her mental health in a consistent way. You haven’t mentioned if she is diagnosed with depression and that is something that might be considered as well in order to be able to meet her needs.

Exercise, keeping mentally and physically active, creating a reliable support system and developing a routine to daily living are all important aspects of the journey to feeling well. Sometimes that is all you need, but other times prescribed medication might be required in the same way that you might take medicine for diabetes or other diagnosed ailments. It never hurts to get second opinions and always try to bring someone along to the appointment who can take notes for you so that you can remember all of the details that the doctor recommends.

It’s a good idea to create a routine when you are transitioning through an emotional crisis such as in the loss of a loved one. You might encourage your mom to create a regular and predictable routine so that she can find a sense of comfort in that.

For instance, she might walk with a friend every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and meet with another companion Tuesday and Thursday to attend morning yoga. Don’t forget to make alternate arrangements for bad weather Page 44

so that the routine isn’t conditional or then it becomes too easy to cancel. She can plan events for the weekends to look forward to as well. Further to that, she might every day have a cup of tea and phone a friend to chat for a few minutes after she wakes up every morning. If she’s not into that, even watching a favourite TV or radio show can become part of her routine. Before bed, she might do the same or have some other routine like having a grandchild come over to play scrabble before bed before her regular routine in preparing for bedtime. You might encourage her to keep notes and write down her plans and keep an updated calendar on the fridge with her activities listed.

As she moves along, she might develop more friendships, enlarge her support system and might start recognizing what really interests her in the world and all the things that she can contribute through volunteering and doing activities in a meaningful and intentional way.

There are many things that you can do to help encourage your mother to broaden and expand her daily life, but ultimately she controls her own life and your compassion and understanding around her personal grief process is very important. Eventually, with gentle encouragement from family, friends and doctors, while allowing her to make the decisions, she might decide to introduce some of these changes into her life.

We are seeing modest sales activity but not quite as good as this time last year and we are seeing lower inventory, about 35% less than last year.

46% of listings are selling this year, where this time last year 37% of listings were selling.

The average sale price is up about 11% from this time last year.

We are seeing the majority of sales occurring in the $250,000$350,000 range.

Sales are not taking as long to occur, the average days to sell is 62 where this time last year it was 77.

So some good improvements and some not so good.

As the Calgary market tightens Strathmore will continue to improve.

Does Art Make a Difference?

By Wanda Reinholdt and Sheila Konschuh When you hear someone say, “That made a difference in my life”, what is your first thought? Is what comes to mind that someone of influence impacted a life - perhaps a teacher, counselor, officer, or friend?

But what if the reference is about art making a difference? Would you find it hard to believe? If so, you are not alone. In my lifetime, I too have thought there is little reason for arts and cultural activities other than for entertainment. And in a region like ours where the focus is on agriculture, oil and gas, and construction, it’s easy to understand. After all, it can seem frivolous to participate in the arts when economic issues are on our minds and day-to-day realities weigh heavily upon us.

Why is it so hard for us to believe a story about art making a difference? What makes us want to limit the potential transformational power that arts and cultural experiences can have on community and individuals’ lives? Maybe it is because we have not heard examples of art making a valuable difference?

I recently discovered a story of inspiration that, at first glance, is hard to identify with given the quality of life we experience here in Canada.

It’s the story of some people in Paraguay that have had no choice but to make their homes atop a landfill. At first glance, it is one of the most Page 48

heartbreaking situations, but it quickly becomes an inspiring literal example of garbage turned into gold. It is the story of musical instruments being created from refuse in a landfill. And the opportunity to create and learn to play these “upcycled” instruments is changing the lives of entire families. The soon to be released documentary “Landfill Harmonic” will remind you that determination, creativity and a love of music can transform an entire community. Check out http://vimeo. com/52711779 There are also stories of transformation here at home: I have enjoyed local talent opening for main stage bands brought to our community by the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. What a great way to build confidence in a performer starting out in their career. In Zentangle workshops hosted by Hope Bridges Society, I have observed participants experiencing reduction in chronic pain. “Burnt Thicket Theatre’s” patrons speak about how their hearts have been changed regarding their relationship with their son or daughter through seeing the show “Hockey Dad”. Blackfoot Crossing receives praise from visitors about how educational their experiences have been, and a Rosebud Theatre patron expresses gratitude for making the last outing with their father so memorable.

Mary Boone, of Canada’s Huffington Post, says it well: “Art, if we let it, can be a respite. It can restore our spirit and help us reconnect to dreams, thoughts, and feelings. It can help us truly see, feel and learn if only we are willing to discover something beautiful, pleasurable, unique or unusual.”

The good news is that the potential for respite, restoration, reconnection and education through the arts exists here in Strathmore and surrounding regions. We have our own rich cultural heritage and diverse artistic community. Local area musicians, wood turners, architectural interior designers, dancers, go green upcyclers, zentanglers, African drummers, painters, actors, videographers, photographic artists, cultural entrepreneurs, cultural managers, philanthropists, directors, and singers are making a difference in our community. And these artists are currently binding together with strength and vitality, becoming much more accessible and effective. This is happening under the umbrella arts society called The Strathmore Regional Arts Collective (SRAC).

Since our official start in the fall, SRAC has been developing a solid foundation of communication, governance, and sustainability. Our ultimate vision is to create a healthy and vibrant arts community through which lives are enhanced by access to and participation in the arts.

And yes, this does include a building. But this is only part of the vision because the arts do so much more.

“Rosebud has always been a very special community for visual artists.” says Gallery Curator and RCA Visual Artist in Residence Valerie Speer.

“Its existence as an Art Village legitimizes the usefulness of art and affirms its importance. The community is immersed in the creative process, and artists of all media find support in one another.”

Speer believes the natural beauty of Rosebud itself is also an attraction for artists. ”Being an artist, I feel blessed to live here. Wandering the hills, drinking in the dramatic lighting, experiencing the rawness of the prairie weather systems have all inspired me in my work as a painter,” she says.

And it’s not just compelling to local artists either. “A.Y. Jackson of The Group of Seven, and H.G. Glyde were similarly inspired by Rosebud which lead them to stay and paint this valley in the 1940s,” Speer notes.

Aligning with the opening of Rosebud Theatre shows in 2013, the Akokiniskway Gallery will offer three exhibitions. The first is entitled “Abundance of Nature” running March 23 to May 11 and features ArtPage 52
