After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

A Note From The Team... Can you feel that? Spring is in the air! We may still see our fair share of snow flurries and frosty mornings before the weather truly warms up for good, but March 20th officially marks the end of Winter and the beginning of a brandnew season. We love Spring here at The Newsy Neighbour for more reasons than we can count. Not only is it a colourful, beautiful time of year – full of new life, fresh starts, and (hopefully!) mild, sunny days – but it also means that it’s time for the annual Newsy Neighbour Wedding Issue! We look forward to putting this issue together for you each and every year, and are always excited to help all the brides- and grooms-to-be in our community celebrate the biggest day of their lives with wedding planning tips, helpful advice, and creative ideas to make your nuptials a unique and personalized experience that you’ll remember fondly for many years to come. Your wedding day is a chance to celebrate love, family, and the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in your lives. That said, it can also be a bit overwhelming, if you let it run away from you. There’s a seemingly-infinite number of details to think about, plan for, and organize – and when the day finally comes, it seems to flash by in a blur of vows, dancing, and confetti. We wrote an article in last year’s Wedding Issue touching on this very subject, but I feel like it bears repeating here, simply because it’s such an important thing to remember: be sure to take the time to slow down, soak it in, and enjoy the day. In fifty years, it won’t matter if some of the flowers were the wrong shade of yellow, or that they delivered cross-back chairs when you had SPECIFICALLY ordered chiavari ones – what you’ll want to remember is the smiling face of your betrothed, and the people who were there to help celebrate you, your partner, and the love you two share. We hope you enjoy our 2018 Wedding Issue, and that it helps make your big day just that much more special and enjoyable. Oh, and Happy Spring, from all of us here at The Newsy Neighbour! ~ The Newsy Neighbour Team Aleesha Gosling, Denise Geremia, Kyle Penn & Marci Hira

THE NEW PUPPY IS STILL HERE!!! I thought she had left, but she didn’t. You see, my family went away on a vacation for a week, and I got my own vacation: I went to Todd’s house. You may not know Todd, but he is a guysguy. He has a huge house, he likes to sit on the couch and watch hockey, and he doesn’t have lots of people coming over or many little sticky-fingered kids running around. It’s just him and his dog, Hana. Hana and I are BFF’s. She’s my soul mate. She is just like me: we sit on the couch all day, sleeping, away from each other. My kind of girl. She doesn’t but me, or attempt to play with

me, or stick her nose in my crotch while I’m peeing. She’s a real classy lady. Then the family came back. I was excited to see mom for a minute, then I realized she was holding that darn puppy in her arms. So, I tried to hide, pretend I wasn’t there, hoping she’d forget me at my new casa (AKA, Todd’s). But nope, she remembered me, and my life of hell has continued. The darn puppy jumping at the couch, trying to get me, sticking her nose in my crotch while I’m trying to pee, running around like an insane mop on speed, and generally just bugging me. She also likes to eat my food. Which normally I’d be really angry about, but I don’t like my food any more and only like her food. So, it actually works well for us: she eats my food, I eat hers. It drives mom crazy, which is an added bonus. I’m hoping that darn puppy is gone before my next column. Fingers (rr… paws) crossed!

Please Help Save The Rockyford Curling Rink Rockyford is a small village an hour NE of Calgary. The curling club has provided 90 years of curling enjoyment to our community. Unfortunately, when we went to open and prepare our rink this

season, we were not able to. There were structural issues to the refrigerated ice surface that need to be addressed before curling can continue. With a heavy heart, the president of the club had to break the news to the community: no curling unless we spend a huge amount of money to fix it.

Randy (president of the curling club) has done an amazing job to get quotes and has determined it will cost approximately $370,000.00 to fix the rink. Since curling is a big part of Canadian history and our little community, it was a no brainer to work hard to come up with the funds. That is why we have taken to GOFUND-ME to help, along with other methods of raising the funds (grants and fundraisers). We need our curling rink to offer social & physical activities to develop wellness for our citizens young and old, near and far, at a reasonable price. We need our rink back! A community thrives on public activities and buildings they come in. Please help us bring back our small piece of Canadian history, village history, and social team building. **If we are unable to raise the $370,000.00, the project will not be able to go ahead. In that event, the funds raised will then be donated the Volunteer Rockyford Fire Department or can be returned to you. So, no matter how big or small the donations are, they will go toward helping our community. But our main goal is to save the curling rink.** Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Owning Your Nuptials How to Personalize Your Wedding While Keeping It Classy

Weddings are steeped in centuries-old traditions. The bride dons a white dress, vows are exchanged, bouquets are tossed, and for one day only, your very closest friends have to wear whatever dresses you pick out for them – even if they’re baby-poop green and look like they travelled through time from a high school prom in 1983 to get there. That said, more and more couples are looking to have their ceremony break from tradition, and to plan an event that’s less cookie-cutter, and more an expression of who they are and what they’ve shared together. 10 •

We think this is fantastic! Not only does having a wedding ceremony sprinkled with personalized touches make the day feel like it’s a celebration of your story as a couple, but it also helps your guests share in your love, and makes for great conversation throughout the day as friends and family talk and exchange stories about what each special little detail signifies. However, here’s where we’d like to pause for a moment and issue a word of advice. Far be it from us to tell you how to organize your big day, but in our opinion, planning a wedding is like designing a tattoo: you want something personalized and unique, but it should still maintain an element of class and timeliness to it. Just like we wouldn’t recommend getting a full portrait of Captain Kirk inked across your entire back to celebrate your appreciation for William Shatner and Star Trek, we also wouldn’t recommend that you turn your reception venue into a re-creation of the bridge of the U.S.S. Enterprise. That said, there are certainly ways to incorporate fun, personal details into your ceremony, while also making sure that it’s not an evening you’ll be embarrassed to share photos of 10 years after the fact. One great way to do this is through your centerpieces. These arrangements allow for the perfect opportunity to tell fun, interesting stories about the bride, the groom, and their relationship as a couple. By creating centerpieces that fit the general aesthetic of the wedding itself while including bits of bespoke flair, the sky’s the limit when it comes to what you can do with these decorations to share a part of yourselves with your guests. Did the two of you take a memorable trip to the coast sometime throughout your relationship together? and make it the focus of an arrangement. Do you both love stargazing? Rather than simply assigning each table a number, name them after constellations in the sky, and create your table signs around the theme to match. Are you a bookworm? Tastefully integrate a small, stacked pile of novels into one of your centerpieces. To really complete the look, grab a bit of spray paint and coat these personalized elements to match the colours of your event, and you’ll have created some beautiful centerpieces that both look great and share a bit of yourselves with everyone in attendance.

these suggestions really just scratch the tip of the iceberg – and it’s these details that your guests will remember, and that you’ll fondly reminisce about well into your golden years. Good luck, and happy planning!

Another perfect opportunity to make your wedding your own is during the ceremony, by exchanging personalized vows. This is a great chance to literally tell a story about what makes the love shared by the two of you so unique and powerful. However, it’s important to keep a few things in mind if you decide to go down this path. First, always strive for brevity. Traditional wedding vows really don’t take all that long to exchange, and are often wrapped up in about a minute – this is the target you should be shooting for. You don’t need to stand up there with stopwatch and time yourself, but if you decide to write your own vows, keep them short and tight. In this instance, it’s all about quality over quantity – and again, keep in mind that you’ll be looking back on these vows for years to come. It’s okay to make a quick reference to a funny moment or inside joke you shared as a couple, but maybe re-visit that plan you came up with to recite your vows in Dothraki, no matter how much you might love Game of Thrones! Ultimately, your wedding day is a chance to share your love with your family, friends, and those closest to you. It’s one of the most important moments in your life, so really make it something special that celebrates the love you both share, while keeping it a timeless and classy event that you’ll be happy to look back on for years to come. There are plenty of ways to personalize your wedding – facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Ultimate

Wedding

Planning

Checklist!

Six to Seven Months Before

Nine to Twelve Months Before • Start a wedding folder, box or binder. Something you can keep all your ideas and inspiration in. Magazines and Pinterest are a perfect place to start. • Work out your budget. • Book your officiate. • Pick your wedding party • Start the guest list. Make a list to use throughout your planning process, make sure to include contact info, RSVP s, gifts, and any other relevant information in your list. (Want to keep costs low? It may be tough to do, but the best way to save money is to reduce your guest list.) • Reserve your date and venues. Do you want to have separate locations for the ceremony and the reception? If so, factor in travel time between the two places. • Research photographers, caterers, florists and bands/DJ’s (there are a few great suggestions in this issue!) • Throw an engagement party, if you wish. Make sure to only invite people that are also going to be invited to the wedding.

Eight Months Before • Purchase a dress. If you are ordering a dress, it’s fairly standard for it to take 3 months to come in. Plus, you’ll need to schedule time for fittings. Veil shopping can be postponed. • Book the entertainment. Attend events of potential entertainment to see if you will like them before you hire them. • Hire the photographer and the videographer. • Meet caterers. If your wedding venue doesn’t offer its own catering service, look for one right away. Booking them this far just takes one less worry off your plate. • Reserve a block of hotel rooms for out-of-town guests. Pick hotels at different price points close to the reception venue. See if the hotels will give you a discount for booking multiple rooms. • Launch a wedding website or blog. Create your personal page through a free provider – there are so many online. Make sure to include the date of the wedding, travel information, and accommodations. Then send the link to everyone you are inviting.

12 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

• Shop for bridesmaids dresses. Just like the bridal dress, you will need time for fittings. • Meet with the officiate. Plan out the ceremony, what everyone is going to say and confirm that you have all the official documents for the wedding. • Order you invitations. There are countless options when it comes to invitations. They can also be very expensive. Do your research before deciding who to order them through. • Arrange transportation. Consider limos, buses and town cars. • Start planning a honeymoon if you plan to take one right after the wedding. Make sure that your passports are up-to-date. • Reserve structural and electrical necessities. • Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs if you need them, tents, an altar, lighting components, etc. • Book a florist. Florists can serve multiple clients on one day, so make sure to find a florist now and book your date. • Start composing a timeline. Do up a schedule of how you would like everything to play out that day like cake cutting, first dance, late night snack, etc.

Four to Five Months Before

• Schedule hair and makeup artists. Make a few appointments with local salons to test them out. Take a look at their portfolios and it wouldn't hurt to snap photos at each trial so you can compare results. • Send your guest list to the host of your shower. Tell her who you would like at the shower and let her send out the invitations. • Book the rehearsal and rehearsal-dinner Venues. Negotiate the cost and the menu. Take into consideration the day-after brunch for guests, and the gift opening. • Check on the wedding invitations. Are they getting close to being done? Did you get a sample of one before they were ALL printed? • Select and order the cake. Some bakers require a long lead-time. Remember to book some taste tests. • Purchase wedding shoes and start dress fittings. Bring the shoes along to your first fitting so the tailor can choose the appropriate length for your gown. • Choose your music. What should be playing during the ceremony? During dinner? To kick off the dancing? Keep a running list of what you want—and do not want—played.

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

Three Months Before

• Purchase the rings. This will give you time for resizing and engraving if you desire. • Finalize the menu and flowers. You’ll want to wait until now to see what will be available, since both food and flowers can change with the season. • Order favors. Wedding favors are small take-home tokens that will help your guests celebrate and cherish your special day. • Finalize speeches and make a list of the people giving toasts. What would you like your speech to say? How do you want to thank everyone for supporting you on this special day? Which loved ones would you like to have speak at the reception? • Purchase your undergarments. Want to wear something special for the night of the wedding? Start thinking about that now. • Schedule another dress fitting. • Finalize the order of events for the ceremony and the reception. • Print menu cards and programs. You can easily create these on your computer at home. You could also get these designed to match your invitations. • Send your event schedule to the vendors. Giving them a first draft now allows time for changes and feedback from your vendors.

Two Months Before

• Send out the invitations. Four weeks’ notice is best for simple, in-town weddings. If it is going to be an out-of-town wedding, then at least six weeks’ notice is best. Make the RSVP cut-off at three weeks after the postmark date. • Touch base again with all the vendors. • Meet with the photographer. Discuss specific shots and ideas, and walk through the locations and start planning now. • Review the playlist with the band or DJ. You probably don‘t want to dictate every single song played, but you should come prepared with a list of songs to play and NOT play. • Submit a newspaper-wedding announcement if you wish to do so. • Enjoy a bachelorette party. Arranging a night out with your girlfriends generally is the responsibility of the maid of honor. But if she hasn’t mentioned one to you by now, ask her about it and get a date settled that works for you. Start getting excited! This pre-wedding celebration is just about YOU (...and him)!

One Month Before

• Write vows, if necessary. • Get your hair cut and coloured, if desired. • Finalize RSVPs. Phone people who have not yet responded. • Get your marriage license. If you are changing your name, remember to change it on your Canadian passport, social insurance number card, with the Canada Revenue Agency, your health card and your driver's license. • Mail the rehearsal-dinner invitations or send the emails. • Purchase bridesmaids’ gifts. There are so many great ideas online of the perfect gift to remind your bridesmaids how grateful you are. • Visit the dressmaker for your last dress fitting. For peace of mind, you may want to also schedule a fitting the week of your wedding. You can always cancel the appointment closer to the date if you feel it is not needed. • Stock the bar. Now that you have a firm head count, you can stock the bar accordingly. • Send out as many final payments as you can. • Confirm times for hair and makeup and all vendors. • E-mail and print directions for drivers of transport vehicles. This gives the chauffeurs ample time to navigate a route. • Assign seating. Draw out table shapes on a layout of the room to help plan place settings. Write the names of female guests with pink and the names of male guests with blue. Sticky notes are great, as you can move people about without re-sketching the entire setting.

Week of the Wedding • Pick up your dress. Do a final fitting JUST to make sure. • Book a spa treatment. Make an appointment for a manicure and a pedicure the day before the wedding. (You might want to get a relaxing massage, too.) • Reconfirm arrival times with your wedding party, parents and vendors. • Delegate small wedding-day tasks. • Choose someone to be in charge of gifts (especially the enveloped sort), someone to hand out tips, and someone to be the point person for each vendor. • Send a timeline to the bridal party. Include every member’s contact information, along with the people you’ve asked to deal with the vendors and other things. • Check in one last time with the photographer. Make sure you have all your locations and times set up and agreed on. • Set aside cheques for the vendors. And put tips in envelopes to be handed out at the event. • Send the final guest list to the caterer and all venues hosting your wedding-related events. Typically, companies close their lists 72 hours in advance. • Break in your shoes. You don’t want your feet killing you on the day of your wedding. • Pack for your honeymoon.

Surviving Your Wedding Day

You’ve been planning for ages, and finally, the big day is here. The venue’s set up, the rehearsal dinner was a success, and all that’s left to do is walk down the aisle. That said, it can sometimes be tough to sit back and enjoy the proceedings after all the effort and expense that goes into organizing and arranging a wedding. Don’t worry, we’re here to help. Clip this page out and keep it with you on your big day, and if you feel like things are starting to get away from you, hopefully you find it helpful. Here’s everything you need to know to survive your wedding – from a team of veterans, to you:

1. Don’t panic.

This goes for EVERY situation on your wedding day. About to walk down the aisle? Don’t panic. Cake showed up pink instead of chartreuse? Don’t panic. The florist delivered lilies instead of peonies? Don’t panic. Today will be a day full of emotion, but remember, your surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones. You don’t need to worry about impressing anyone – everyone who’s in attendance is there to support you, and to share in your love and joy. Sure, there might be that judgy second-aunt from the other side of the family, but who cares what she thinks anyway? Don’t panic, don’t let anything get to you, and enjoy the day.

2. Take it all in.

The one thing that surprised me most, looking back on my own wedding, is how quickly the danged thing went by. After a yearand-a-half of planning, meetings, meal tastings, appointments, fittings, venue tours, and more, the entire thing was over in a thenewsyneighbour.com

3. Things will go wrong.

It’s okay. Seriously, there’s no avoiding it. When you’re putting together an event with as many moving pieces as a wedding, there’s a fair certainty that something will deviate from the plan. Don’t worry; it’s okay. Remember, this is your special day. You only get married once, so the last thing you should be doing is spending it screaming into your cellphone at the baker for sending over a chocolate cake instead of a red velvet one. Chances are, whatever detail you’ve picked up on that’s “gone wrong” won’t even be noticed by your guests – so if something doesn’t go exactly according to plan, just take a deep breath, grab a glass of wine, and remember what the day is all about.

4. Enjoy yourself.

flash. It felt like there was barely time to even say a quick “hello” to everyone who came out before the DJ was packing up for the night and the guests were filtering tipsily out the door! If you’re not careful, the entire day will fly by without you getting the chance to enjoy it – so, if you can, be sure to take a step back at least once or twice throughout the evening to really soak it all in. You’ll be glad you did.

If we had to pick the most important piece of advice off this list, it’d be this one. This pretty much sums up everything else we’ve talked about so far, and wraps it up with a nice bow on top. On the day of your wedding, there’s no more planning to do. You’ve spent months getting ready and trying to account for every contingency – trust in your work, roll with the punches, and let things fall into place as they will. As long as you’ve got your partner by your side and the officiant pronounces you a lawfully-wedded couple, the day has been success, and everything else is just gravy. So, spend your wedding loving, laughing, and basking in the joy of your friends, family, and new life partner. You’ve earned it. Follow this advice, and you’ll be ready to deal with anything your wedding day might throw at you. We know it can be a whirlwind filled with decisions, questions, and all sorts of potential anxiety – but ultimately, it all comes down to your approach. Go into things with an unflappable attitude and a commitment to enjoying yourself, and your wedding will undoubtedly be one of the happiest days of your life – just as it rightfully should be! ~ Kyle Penn

Active Wedding Reception Games We've all been to receptions that are standard - we welcome and celebrate the new married couple, watch them dance, and enjoy cake with them. But creative couples often enjoy coming up with fun games that include the entire guest list. Including the guests is an excellent way to get people out of their chairs, meeting people they might not otherwise know and feeling like they are truly a part of the celebration, not just observers. One fun and active game that can be played by all your guests, including grandma, as well as the young children, is "want it now". In this game, you designate a master of ceremonies (if you have a The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Everyone sits at their tables, and waits to hear the command. The MC says he wants a person with painted toenails. Anyone with painted toenails runs to the front of the room, toward the MC. Each time a table sends someone to the front first, they get a point. Points should be tallied during the course of this game and prizes awarded at the end of the game. Be sure to have some obvious "wants", as is the painted toenails, or a man with a mustache or a child with a pink dress. But also include some surprises, like "a man with a brown purse," which will require a man to find a woman at his table with a brown purse and run up to the front of the room with it. Another fun wedding reception game that includes all your guests is musical chairs, using men as the chairs. All the men line up and kneel on one knee. The women begin playing the game of musical chairs, but when the music stops, they must find a knee to sit on. No "chairs" are removed during the version of the game, but instead people are eliminated when either the man falls down when the woman finds his knee, or when the woman falls down. Both are out either way, and if both fall down, they are also both out (as well as perhaps a bit bruised). This is a fun game that often brings on gales of laughter and adds to a relaxed reception atmosphere. If many guests are traveling a good distance to the wedding or don't know many other guests, it's always fun to include a game that will allow them to not only get to know each other, but the bride and groom as well. For this game, you'll need an MC again, which can be a very outgoing member of the wedding party, or the DJ. The reception guests are broken into two groups, which can be as simple as having people count off "1, 2, 1, 2" and so on until the entire guest list is either a "1" or a "2". Then the two groups band together for the duration of the game. The MC offers a series of questions relating to the bride and

/langdonfirehouse | 403.936.3673

groom. The teams should work together to answer the questions, then as quickly as possible, provide the answer. The bride and groom will confirm if the answer is correct or not. This is an excellent way for otherwise "stranger" guests to get to know one another and have some fun in the process. It's also an excellent way to get to know the bride and groom! Organizing games at a wedding reception is a great way to get people involved and make them feel they are truly a part of the celebration. It's also a way to fill time! Whether a small or large wedding, reception games work for just about any group. In addition, don't assume wedding reception guests will be offended or annoyed by these active games. Most people report to wedding planners they truly enjoy being more active and having fun games to play during a wedding reception.

Your Guide to Attending a Gay Wedding

WEDDING JOKE

On their wedding night, the young bride approached her new husband and asked for $20.00 for their first lovemaking encounter. In his highly aroused state, her husband readily agreed. This scenario was repeated each time they made love, for more than 40 years, with him thinking that it was a cute way for her to afford new clothes and other incidentals that she needed. Arriving home around noon one day, she was surprised to find her husband in a very drunken state. During the next few minutes, he explained that his employer was going through a process of corporate downsizing, and he had been let go. It was unlikely that, at the age of 59, he'd be able to find another position that paid anywhere near what he'd been earning, and therefore, they were financially ruined. Calmly, his wife handed him a bank book which showed more than forty years of steady deposits and interest totaling nearly $1 million. Then she showed him certificates of deposits issued by the bank which were worth over $2 million, and informed him that they were one of the largest depositors in the bank. She explained that for more than three decades she had 'charged' him for sex, these holdings had multiplied and these were the results of her savings and investments. Faced with evidence of cash and investments worth over $3 million, her husband was so astounded he could barely speak, but finally he found his voice and blurted out, 'If I'd had any idea what you were doing, I would have given you all my business!'

As we head towards the 2018 wedding season, there’s a good chance that you could receive an invitation to attend the nuptials of a gay couple. Same-sex marriage has been legal in Canada for nearly 13 years now, and as our culture heads in a more open and accepting direction, more and more gay couples are feeling comfortable exchanging vows and dedicating their lives to one another. If you find yourself being invited to your first gay wedding but aren’t sure what to expect, we’ve put together this article so that you can go in prepared. Without further ado, here’s what you need to know when attending a gay wedding!

If you’ve never been to a gay wedding, you might not know what exactly to wear. Most people attending will be sporting various degrees of formal wear, ranging from full-on tuxes and evening gowns to more casual suits, dresses, and similar such attire. Ladies will fit right in wearing a formal dress or gown – if it’s warm, feel free to wear something that’s a little lighter and more casual, if you’d prefer. If you’re a gentleman, your best bet is to come dressed in some smart-looking duds: shine up those dress shoes, throw on a suit, and accessorize with a tie or bowtie. Do you have that outfit you wore to your cousin’s wedding last summer? That’d do the trick just fine.

Two People Sharing Their Love The central theme of all gay weddings is the recognition of a strong, unbreakable love shared by two people, and the witnessing of the commitment these two individuals are making to one another to support each other throughout life. This is most often accomplished through the solemn exchange of vows (these can The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

either be traditional, or are sometimes written personally by each participant), and is formalized by the presence of an officiant and the signing of legal, binding documents. The ceremony itself is usually accompanied by music, and often begins with an entrance procession, later wrapping up with a joyful exit procession, during which people will often clap, cheer, and celebrate. Just like at a straight wedding, it’s an incredibly profound experience to watch two people dedicate themselves to one another in such a binding and official manner, and people may often be inspired by the love they’re witnessing, or reminded happily of the day they exchanged vows with their own husband or wife.

a gay wedding. There will usually be a banquet for all of the guests invited, often accompanied by a cocktail hour and a bar to get drinks from throughout the night. Feel free to get a little tipsy, but it’s never a good idea to get completely sloshed at a gay wedding – you’ve been invited as a guest, and it’s just not a great look, is all. There will most likely be cake or some form of dessert to enjoy as well, and you might even be treated to a midnight snack, if you stick around late enough. Friends and family may give speeches at some point throughout the evening as well – some of these will be funny and entertaining, but others may drag on for far too long (or be a bit embarrassing), so be prepared.

Putting Words to Music

Wedding Themes The best time to select a wedding theme is in the very early stages of planning. This will ensure that all aspects, including your venue selection and invitations, will work with your overall theme. Of course, if your wedding is several months away and you want to add a theme, there's nothing stopping you. Selecting a theme early in the planning process will make shopping for all items a little simpler, as you will know just what you're looking for from the beginning!

The Theme Game

From masquerade balls to western-themed weddings, there are more themes out there than any bride can imagine. Choosing the theme for you should be a conversation between you and your fiancé. Is there a certain something that has special meaning to you as a couple? Think about how you met, the hobbies you share, the places you've visited, and the place where he proposed. Perhaps you'll come up with a unique idea, such as a Broadway-themed evening with your names in lights, a travel theme complete with miniature airplane escort cards, or a safari theme to highlight where you'll be spending your honeymoon. Think outside the box, and don't be afraid to come up with something your guests would never expect!

A fabulous exercise when determining a wedding theme is to write it down. Describe your wedding in one sentence, just as it would be if it were featured in a magazine. For example, you might write, "An English tea party comes to life with southern accents in rose and sage green." Writing a description of your wedding will ensure that you have a clear vision - and you can even share it with vendors, too!

Making Your Theme Fly

Selecting a theme can be as simple as choosing a graphic you love, such as a whimsical monogram, or as elaborate as hiring circus performers to work their magic with guests. Whatever your theme, look at every element of your day and think about how you can make it work with your theme. For example, a couple hoping to infuse their wedding with a Spanish flare might think about the food (tapas) and the music (mariachi band), as well as ensuring the invitations, programs, centerpieces, and the venue all carry out aspects of the theme. Add a signature cocktail and a special performance to really add wow factor to your theme! There's a theme for every couple - all you need to do is uncover the one that's waiting for you, and it will help make your wedding day one that everyone will remember for years to come!

My Favourite - Fabulous - Fantastic and Fun Stuff

ple take moringa for a number of different reasons including diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, detoxification, balancing the thyroid, immune support, fatigue, intestinal disorders, digestive support, insomnia, skin abrasions, anemia, stress, wrinkles, eczema, shingles and much more. I drove back to the market the following weekend and purchased 3 baggies of the leaves. I also ordered moringa powder, oil and face cream on the “Moringa for Life” website. There is a TON of information on the internet on this “superfood” and it truly is a miracle tree. It has been used for years as a sustainable food source for third world countries where malnutrition is prevalent. Moringa has a delicious green and spinach-y taste. Unlike other green superfoods like chlorella and spirulina, which are algae’s and often found unpalatable, it is easy to incorporate moringa into your daily routine.

Aren’t we all looking for a way to have more energy, wake up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, have an overall feeling of healthfulness? I know I am! Yes, I drink turmeric tea every morning, fresh ginger tea in the afternoon and now I am pleased to announce “Moringa tea” in the evening. I found this new miracle tea quite by accident – isn’t that the way it always goes? I was wandering around an outdoor market in Arizona and there was a Mexican gentleman selling these bags of ‘”Moringa”. I asked him about his baggies of what looked like leaves, and all he could tell me was “it is very good for you”. After doing some research on “Moringa” I was astounded to learn that yes, “it is very good for you”. Listen to this: one gram of moringa contains 7 times the vitamin C in oranges, 4 times the calcium in milk, 4 times the vitamin A in carrots, 3 times the potassium in bananas and 3 times the iron in spinach! It works to bring the body to a balanced state of health. It is capable of toning down or strengthening the activity of the bodies hyper functioning systems, depending on your bodies needs. Peo-

Using moringa couldn't be easier - just mix 1-2 teaspoons (or half a teaspoon if you're just starting out) into any dish or drink or just use it as a superfood seasoning. If you are not a “tea” person there are a ton of other ways to use moringa: SPRINKLE... onto salads, eggs, roasted veg, pasta & risotto BAKE... into savoury bread, brownies, muffins & cookies STIR... into soups, dips, sauces, casseroles & stews SHAKE... into apple juice, coconut water & salad dressings BLEND... into sauces, green juices, smoothies & ice creams Moringa contains antioxidants called flavonoids, polyphenols, and ascorbic acid in the leaves, flowers, and seeds. One study found that leaf extracts had higher antioxidant activity, free-radical-scavenging capacity, and higher inhibition of lipid, protein, and DNA oxidation than flowers and seeds. This means it prevents the damage and degradation that free radicals cause in the cells of different organs in the body, keeping them healthy and functioning at their best. Inflammation can lead to chronic diseases like diabetes, respiratory problems, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and obesity. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Moringa reduces inflammation by suppressing inflammatory enzymes and proteins in the body, and moringa leaf concentrate can significantly lower inflammation in the cells. This is the find of the century since it also has heart-healthy benefits, particularly in blood lipid control, the prevention of plaque formation in the arteries, and reduced cholesterol levels. It supports brain health and cognitive function because of its antioxidant and neuro-enhancer activities. It's also been tested as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease with favourable preliminary results. Its high content of vitamins E and C fight oxidation that leads to neuron degeneration, improving brain function. It’s also able to normalize the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline in the brain, which play a key role in memory, mood, organ function, responses to stimulus such as stress and pleasure, and mental health, for example in depression and psychosis. And there is more! It has high concentrations of polyphenols in its leaves and flowers that protect the liver against oxidation, toxicity, and damage. It can reduce liver damage and fibrosis and reverse oxidation in the liver. Moringa oil can also restore liver enzymes to normal levels, reducing oxidative stress, and increasing protein content in the liver. The liver is responsible for blood detoxification, bile production, fructose metabolism, fat metabolism, and nutrient processing, and it can only fulfill these functions with the aid of liver enzymes, so it's vital they stay at normal levels. For instance, lower levels of hepatic enzymes can impair its ability to filter the blood. And I’m not done yet! Moringa has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that fight infections. It's been effective against types of fungi that cause infections on skin and strains of bacteria

9. Take More Risks

25 Things About Life I Wish I Had Known 10 Years Ago

Don’t be such a wimp.

10. Pick an Industry, Not A Job

If you want to become good at something, you need to spend years and years doing that. You can’t do that if you hop from industry to industry. Pick an industry you love and start at the bottom. You will find the perfect role for you eventually.

11. Lead the Way

by DARIUS FOROUX

When you find yourself in a situation where everyone looks at each other, it’s time for you to lead. You are a leader when you decide to become one. There’s no initiation or a title. Just a decision.

1. Struggle Is Good

Never say “I can’t take it anymore.” Say “Bring it on!”

2. Don’t Complain

Complaining is the biggest waste of time there is. Either do something about it, and if you can’t, shut up about it.

3. Spend Time with People You Love

That’s your family and best friends. If you don’t have a family, create one. Most people in life are only visitors. Family is for life.

4. Don’t Start A Relationship If You’re Not in Love

I’ve done this more than once. You like someone and think, “We might as well give it a shot.” Not a good idea. You’re either in love, or you are not. Don’t fool yourself. It’s not fair to you and the other person.

5. Exercise Daily

I didn’t get this until recently. A healthy body is where you have to start everything in life. If you can’t build a healthy and strong body, what CAN you build in life?

6. Keep A Journal

No, keeping a journal is not for children. It helps you to become a better thinker and writer. “I don’t want to be a writer,” you might think. Well, how many emails and texts do you send a day? Everybody is a writer.

7. Be Grateful

Say ‘thank you’ to everyone and everything. “Thank you for this beautiful day.” “Thank you for your email.” “Thank you for being there for me.”

8. Don’t Care About What People Think

We all die in the end; do you really think it matters what people think of you?

24 •

12. Money Is Not the Most Important Thing

You have to train yourself not to care about money and focus on providing value instead. Also, don’t become too dependent on the stuff you own — otherwise, the stuff will own you.

13. Be Nice

I don’t mean you should be a pushover. You can be someone that doesn’t take crap and be nice about it. Just don’t insult people, think you’re better than them, or act like an idiot.

14. Learn Every Day

You’ve got to train your brain to stay alert. You don’t have to read a book a day to learn every day. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from the people around you — be open to what they can teach you.

15. Rest Before You Are Tired

Even if you love your job and every day seems like a holiday, you need to take time to rest. You’re a human and not an android; never forget that.

16. Don’t Judge

Just because people make different choices than you, they are not stupid. Also, you don’t know everything about people, so don’t judge them — help them.

17. Think About Others

Just be mindful, that’s all. We all have families, bills to pay, and our own issues. Don’t always make everything about yourself.

18. Give Without Expecting Something in Return

Don’t keep score. You will become a bitter person if you do that. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Give solely for the joy of giving. If you get something in return, great; if you don’t, great.

19. There’s No End Game

We, as a species, just are. Don’t try to figure it all out. Enjoy your journey.

20. Enjoy Small Things

I like clichés because they are true. Especially this one. You know why? Everyone says they know it, but no one lives up to it. They just chase big things.

21. Don’t Take Yourself So Serious

Yeah, yeah, you’re an individual, and people have to take you seriously, I get it. But at the end of the day, we’re all a bunch of ants trying to chase the same things. Lighten up.

22. Don’t Blame People

What’s the point? Do you want to punish them? You don’t do that to people. Also, don’t blame yourself — you’re only human.

23. Create Something

Not to leave a legacy, you won’t be here to see it anyway, but to be of use. Make music, write a book, build a table, anything. You’ll feel good about yourself, plus you give something back to people to use or enjoy.

24. Never Look Back Too Long

Reflecting on the past is only good for one thing: learning.

25. Take Action

Don’t just sit there, do something. Without action, there is no outcome.

Coconut Chaga Latte Recipe Nothing beats a nice hot beverage on a cool day, and for most people this means a fresh coffee or an inviting tea. Of course, there are plenty of other options that are just as delicious and many that are much healthier overall, like this Coconut Chaga Latte. The purpose of this recipe is to provide a healthier, non-caffeinated version to the hot beverage arsenal. This latte will give your body and brain a dose of healthy fats, immune support, liver love, and antioxidants. What Is Chaga? A very slow growing mushroom, Chaga has been known to have much more potency than other medicinal mushrooms because it is so long-lived; therefore more concentrated often with pharmaceutical grade healing constituents. As one of the most powerful antioxidants on Earth, Chaga is also a super adaptogen, giving the body what it needs to return to its natural state. Chaga acts as both a soothing anti-stress nerve tonic and a powerful cancer fighter. The list of purported uses of Chaga over the centuries is long and includes prevention against many of the top killers in North America today including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and obesity. The Chaga Mushroom is a superior medicinal mushroom containing over 215 phytonutrients, glyconutrients including: Betulinic Acid, Polysaccharides, Beta Glucans, Tripeptides, Triterpenes including Lanosterol-type Triterpenes, Sterols, Saponins, Inotodiols, Trametenolic Acid and Melanin. https://www.annandachaga.com/pages/chagahealthbenefits

a winner when combining styles and it works with numerous shades of ‘girly’ colours.

How to Mix His & Hers Design Style

Curves vs. Tailored Pieces

When selecting key pieces of furniture such as your sofa, these are pieces that work well when they are more streamlined with nice clean lines and not a lot, if any, embellishment. These items need to be sturdy and practical, which every male appreciates. Pairing a more tailored sectional (let’s say) with a curvy wing back accent chair balances the masculine and feminine look.

Rustic and Refined

Everyone has different tastes and styles. When relationships come together for the first time in a newly shared house, it can be a challenge to combine both of your belongings and achieve a balanced and cohesive look. With these tips, you can ease the transition and create your home together.

Colour

Women often lean towards colours that are more trendy – light and airy, but we also take more risks with pops of colour and shades with a little more vibrancy. Men, on the other hand, take a more muted approach and lean towards tans and browns and overall darker colours. The best way to combine both of these styles is to mix and match. Selecting a darker wall colour combined with white or cream furniture can balance the man cave appeal. A soft grey is always

A balance of natural textures and stylised pieces go hand in hand with a cohesive and design-savvy look for yourself and your beau’s humble abode. Males are inclined to like the natural look of wood; too much can make a space look very heavy and condensed, but paired with more feminine styling, it can balance everything out. On a heavy item like a large wooden coffee table, a small floral arrangement and a stack of coffee table books softens the appeal and adds individual flare. A refined option would be to add a little sparkle – creating a little bling with a classic chandelier above a rustic harvest table gives a nod to the male need for something more raw in its appeal, while also giving the glam a woman craves. One thing to remember is that a perfect and cohesive home does not happen overnight; much like your relationship, it grows over time and is a work in progress. Your home is your nest, a place to love together and cherish one another and escape the outside world. Your home should be a reflection of your personalities, experiences and interests both together and individually. With these tips, it will help with the ease of transition and the beginning of a beautiful relationship with your new home together.

And try eating banana and honey sandwiches as a hangover cure. These work wonders as they line the stomach, replenish your energy stores, fix your electrolytes and break down acetaldehyde – a toxic substance that is responsible for a lot of the negative effects associated with hangover.

Sitting Too Much

If you work an office job, then the simple fact of the matter is that you probably sit far too much. Even if you don’t have an office job but you like to spend your evenings relaxing in front of the television: you almost certainly sit too much as well. Sitting is bad for us for all kinds of reasons. The main one though is that it’s terrible for our hearts – the longer you spend sitting during the day, the more likely you are to die young – and the main reason for that is that your heart health declines. Think about your dog or your cat. They are typically either very active, chasing things around the house, going for long walks etc. or they are sleeping. Most animals, when left to their own devices, do not just sit statically for long periods of time – and neither should you! Thus, if you are spending a lot of time just sitting down, there’s a very good chance that your heart is weakening and your fitness is less than it could be. And you might even be shortening your lifespan. And most of us don’t sit with particularly good posture. In fact, there isn’t really a good posture for sitting and however you try to position yourself you’re likely to cause some damage. The main problem is that your legs are lifted up at right angles. This is a very ‘scrunched up’ position to be in and is pretty much

the opposite of a stretch. Thus, the muscles on the tops of your legs that help you lift your leg up (a group known as the hip flexors), will become shorter and tighter over time if you sit a lot. Meanwhile, the muscles on the backs of your legs that bring your thighs back down (the hip extensors) will become elongated, stretched and weak (and it doesn’t help that you’re sitting on your hamstrings and glutes all day either). Likewise, your arms will be forward in a typing position, which will shorten your pecs and weaken your back muscles. You’ll be looking downwards towards the computer and your shoulders will likely be hunched. All of this leads to condition known as ‘kyphosis’ where you have a permanent hunch. These problems with your biomechanics can then lead to a number of other issues. Common for instance is to get neck pain and headaches. Likewise, you might find that you get pain in the small of your back and that you struggle to bend down to pick things up. And what you might not realize is just how much your energy levels and mood can be impacted by poor flexibility. You can then find yourself struggling to do simple things, aching when you wake up in the mornings and generally struggling to get around and move normally – you can feel prematurely like an elderly man or woman! Imagine if you could move your joints more freely, if you didn’t have nagging pains and if your fitness was improved? All this could be fixed by just sitting a little less. But you probably aren’t sitting all day for the fun of it. More likely, you work the job you do because you need the money and because you don’t have another option. Here are some tips that can help then: • Ensure you have the proper posture at work – keep your computer monitor head height so you aren’t looking down and have your arms at right angles. Bring your keyboard in nearer to you. • Look for a supportive chair. • Change position occasionally – if you have the option to, take a laptop to different parts of your working area. • If that’s not an option, then just make sure that you’re getting up and moving around often. Take a ten minute break every hour or so and if you need to take a call, try pacing around the office while you take it. • You can even consider looking into a standing desk. While it’s hard to focus standing, you can at least stand up when answering e-mails or performing other tasks that don’t require a lot of attention.

Stress Management

But if there is one thing about working in an office that is bad for your health and your energy levels, it would not be the way you’re sitting. Far more destructive by far is stress, which is something that a great many of us experience in the work place. If you are very stressed at work, then you hould not underestimate just what a severe impact this can have on your health, your mood and your energy levels. The reason that we as humans get stressed is that in the wild, it would have helped us to survive dangerous situations. The idea of stress is to increase our awareness, our physical strength and our ability to think quickly. Thus, when we are stressed, our bodies respond by releasing dopamine, norepinephrine and other ‘fight or flight’ hormones. This increases our heartrate; it directs more blood flow to the muscles and to the brain and it heightens our awareness. At the same time, we might start trembling, our immune systems The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

and digestive systems will be suppressed and we’ll feel anxious and jittery. All these effects are designed to help us in a combat or escape situation. In other words, they are meant to come on fast and be over quickly. If we saw a predator or prey, if we had a fight with someone, or if we saw a fire – then this would be exactly how the fight or flight system would work and it would probably help us to stay alive. Today though, stress is not acute – it is chronic. Our modern sources of stress include things like angry bosses, poor finances, strained relationships, looming deadlines… all these are things that have no finite end, or no imminent end at least. In other words, our body is constantly in this state of arousal and as such, our immune system is constantly suppressed leaving us susceptible to illness. Likewise, so too is our digestion, robbing us of the nutrients we should be getting from our food. We’ll also feel anxious and jittery and this will prevent us from sleeping well. And eventually, the brain will ‘run low’ on those fight or flight hormones. At this point, your sympathetic nervous system burns out and you reach a point known as ‘adrenal fatigue’. It’s then that you will find yourself robbed of the neurotransmitters that normally help you to get up in the morning and to focus on the task in hand. And without these neurotransmitters, you will feel demotivated, low on energy and listless – it is even correlated with depression. So if you’re getting to that point where you have no energy in the morning and where it’s all just starting to feel a little bit too hard to carry on – you’re probably experiencing adrenal fatigue as a result of stress. If you are in that situation, then it’s highly advisable that you change some aspect of your lifestyle or your routine. While it might not be easy to quit your job, to take time out of a relationship, or to speak to a financial advisor – it’s crucial that you do. Ultimately, your health and your quality of life are what you should be putting first above all else. So if something is causing you a lot of stress and there’s anything you can do about it… you should act. If not, then you have some other options. One is to simply take some time off – having a holiday for instance. Another is to ask for help and to speak with friends about your stress. You’d be surprised what a big help it can be just to speak about your problems. Finally, consider getting therapy from a cognitive behavioral therapist. This type of therapy is a very grounded and ‘results focused’ form of therapy that teaches you specific tools for dealing with mental health problems like stress. CBT uses tools and techniques that allow you to exactly pinpoint what precisely it is making you stressed in the first place (a process called ‘mindfulness’) and it uses techniques that you can use to assess just how bad the things you’re stressed about really are. Most often you will find that when you really assess your fears and stresses logically, there’s actually nothing to be afraid of. Sometimes getting over stress is just a case of facing your fears.

Chapter 4: Sleeping Habits Can Drain or Enhance Energy What do you want to do when you feel really tired and you have no energy left to do anything? You want to sleep, right? This should tell you quite plainly how important sleep is for energy. In fact, sleep is something of a miracle cure for all kinds of ailments – it improves your memory, your focus, your attention, your mood and your sleep immensely. Sleeping is far more effective than any beauty treatment, any ‘smart drug’ and any supplement. Get the right sleep and you will perform on the top of your game the next day – it’s that simple.

But again, some of them involve a lot of work and very little pay off. So instead, let’s focus on the best ones that really make a noticeable difference and that are relatively easy to perform. The good news is that if you’re following the tips in this book so far, you should already find yourself sleeping much better. That’s because you’ll have more energy from more efficient mitochondria – and studies show that this is actually crucial for sleep. It’s again something of a vicious cycle: but low energy leads to poor sleep and poor sleep leads to lower energy! Likewise, if you’re eating healthier you’ll be getting the vitamin D, the zinc and magnesium and all kinds of other important nutrients to help your body recover through the night. Finally, if you’re reducing your stress, you’ll find that this massively has an impact on your ability to sleep as you’ll be able to much more easily switch off from the stresses of the day. At the same time, try these additional strategies:

Take a Hot Bath or Shower Before Bed

This is one of the most powerful ways to help yourself sleep more deeply. Taking a hot shower just before you go to sleep will not only relax your muscles, it will also trigger your body to produce growth hormone and melatonin, essentially getting you nicely drowsy.

Have Half an Hour to Rest Before Bed

If there’s ‘one life hack’ that absolutely everyone should subscribe to these days, it’s this one. No matter what else is going on in your life: take half an hour before bed to read a book and to relax. Keep your phone off and have just a dim bedside lamp. Don’t watch TV and generally let yourself treat this like a ‘wind down’ time. What this does is to allow you to forget the stresses of the day and to feel more relaxed as a result. Moreover, the lack of ‘screen time’ means that your brain will be able to begin producing more melatonin. When you look at a computer or TV screen, your brain interprets the wavelength of the light as being sunlight. As a result, it acts as though it is daytime and it floods your body with cortisol, preventing you from sleeping. And this is why it’s also so important to make sure there’s no light on in your room. Seriously though, the benefits of having half an hour to yourself to unwind go far beyond just better sleep. When your life is constantly rushed and you never have any time for ‘you’, it can often feel as though you’re constantly being pushed to your limit. Start taking this time off to decompress and the world can seem a lot easier to manage.

Get Into a Routine

Something important to understand about the human body is that it works to rhythms. Your body likes routine because this allows it

to learn natural rhythms – highs and lows that will stay consistent ensuring you start winding down biologically at the right moment. This can make a big difference then to your ability to doze off and it will also allow you to control the amount of sleep you’re getting more carefully. As you likely know, eight hours is a good ball-park figure to aim for if you can. Likewise, you should also try to reserve your room purely for sleeping and sex. This is important because it creates an association between your room and sleep. This way, when you head to your room, it will act like a trigger that tells your body it’s bed time and you’ll begin to feel drowsy almost right away!

Perfect Your Environment

These are the ‘easy tips’ that pretty much everyone already knows about sleeping – but they’re important and so they’re still very much worth going over. So another key thing to look at to make sure you’re sleeping optimally is your environment, which must be: • Completely silent • As pitch black as possible • Clean (if possible) • Comforting If you struggle to maintain a tidy room, or if you don’t have much control over things like the amount of light, then a good strategy is just to get a curtain to go around your bed. That way you can block out the light and give yourself a private space within your larger room even. Obvious it’s also very important to wear comfortable pajamas (or sleep naked, which is currently preferred by the research), to invest in a comfortable bed (one of the best purchases you will ever make) and to keep your room the right temperature. The ideal temperature is for your room to be a little bit cool, which is again how we are evolutionarily designed to sleep.

How to Calm Your Mind

But what if you’re someone who can’t sleep? What if your mind is constantly active and you lie in bed with it racing, unable to switch off? This is a problem a lot of people face and it can severely rob them of their energy levels the next day. And actually that is the problem. You see, when you lie in bed and try to sleep, you might find that it actually makes you stressed. The fear of not getting to sleep, or the frustration and the expectation, are so great that they actually cause you to lie awake worrying. Ever had that ‘hot and bothered’ feeling where you look at the clock, see it says 4am and then curse the world for being able to sleep when you cannot? The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

This isn’t exactly how you sink off to sleep! To get around this problem then, we’re going to once again take a leaf out of the CBT book (cognitive behavioral therapy). The idea then, is to change the way you approach sleep and the way you think about it. Specifically, you’re going to stop pressuring yourself to sleep and to instead just allow yourself to relax. Consider sleep to be a bonus. So tell yourself that it’s fine to just relax in bed and to enjoy being comfy – because it is. That’s good for you too. You can’t force yourself to sleep, so don’t try. Just lie there and enjoy not having to do anything, enjoy not having to be anywhere and enjoy the feeling of closing your eyes and listening to your breathing. What you’ll find, quite ironically, is that as soon as you start taking this approach… you drift right off!

Should You Power Nap?

With the best will in the world, there will still be times when you don’t have the very best sleep and when all your sleeping strategies fail you. In those scenarios, what do you do? Well, one good strategy is just to try again later. Remember when we compared your energy levels to those of your cat or dog? We said that the cat and dog were either active, or asleep – never anything in between. You can do the same thing yourself by sleeping throughout the day to catch up on some shuteye and many studies have shown that this can boost productivity, mood and more. So how do you nap correctly? The secret is to time it correctly and specifically to aim to nap for around 90 minutes, not more and not less. This is important because of the way our body cycles through different stages of sleep (the body loves rhythms remember!). In 90 minutes you will go through one complete sleep cycle and will go from the lightest stage of sleep, to SWS (slow wave sleep) to REM. You’ll then be woken up just as you start to come around. On the other hand, you can sleep for 10-20 minutes in order to wake up before you go into the deeper stages of sleep and to avoid sleep inertia that way. 90 minutes is definitely better though, as dreaming is considered to be instrumental in helping us lay down new memories and boost our performance.

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER: A Pair of Diabetic Feet

Hey there, Larry here. Happy March to all of you! We are hoping you all got through February with some warmth; especially on those chilly days. We had a great month and enjoyed the snow on those sunny days. In March, Roger and I often think about the great saying, “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” We thought we would study it a bit more. We found a lovely poem online that we wanted to share. Roger looked into it further, and found that while many sayings are based on observation and are accurate, others are the rhymes and beliefs of those who came before us. Apparently, the folks that come before us actually believed that bad spirits could change the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or didn't do in certain situations. Those beliefs also included ideas that there could be a balance in weather and in life. So, if the weather came in bad (like a lion), it could go out good and calm (like a lamb). Since March is such a changeable month in which we can see warm, spring-like days, or late season blizzards, it is easy to understand how the saying might hold true in some instances. We could not find much more than that, but enjoy the short and sweet poem that we found.

In Like A Lion, Out Like A Lamb by Lorie Hill March roars in like a lion So fierce, The wind so cold, It seems to pierce. The month rolls on And Spring draws near, And March goes out Like a lamb so dear.

Most often, the sting was caused because the anesthetic was fired in too quickly. A Child' s Development

Bedwetting is a natural childhood developmental phase that millions of children experience. While it’s quite common, parents still struggle with interrupted sleep and extra laundry loads, and some even wonder where they might have gone wrong in the potty-training process. If not handled properly, children can even lose confidence in themselves, especially when faced with potentially discouraging situations like a sleepover at a friend’s house. “The most important thing for parents to understand about bedwetting is that it is different than potty training. If your child is able to successfully use the bathroom during the daytime without any accidents, they have matured past the potty training stage. But many children between the ages of 4 and 6 still have accidents at night,” says Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg, pediatrician. Forty percent of parents with children in this age group say their child wets the bed at least once a week. Nighttime wetness is completely normal and part of the developmental growing process. There are many reasons why children wet the bed. The most important one to understand is that children develop at different rates. This development is something parents and their children will have to let happen at its own speed. Also, part of that development centers around your child’s bladder. Young children still have developing and growing bladders. Because of this, they aren’t able to “hold it” for an entire night. Finally, children are also very deep sleepers, which is great to help build energy for all the activities they do during the day. But it also prevents them from recognizing the signals that their bladder is full, leading to bedwetting situations. According to the survey, 43 percent of parents believe they can train their child out of bedwetting. In reality, there is no training to make bedwetting go away, however parents can help their children maintain confidence by keeping the bed dry, even if the child goes to the bathroom in the middle of the night while asleep. You can help reduce the surprise of accidents by waking your child during the night for a trip to the bathroom. Also, GoodNites Underwear for boys and girls are specifically made to protect children while they’re lying down, and are 40 percent more absorbent than leading training pants. Your child’s pajamas and bed will stay dry, allowing for greater confidence and self-esteem as they grow out of this common childhood phase.

Good Family Fun in Vegas If you are looking for some fun things to do in Las Vegas with or without the family, this should keep you busy for the better part of your travels. Keep in mind that Vegas is a city with lights and action; most of the attractions will have one or other, if not both, of these elements. Enjoy this big city and have as much fun as you can possibly muster during your stay.

The High Roller at the Stratosphere Hotel is a roller coaster, which at 909 feet above ground is the world's highest (keep in mind that competition is fierce among coaster makers and that is subject to change). This roller coaster consists of more than 800 feet of track and offers some sharply banking turns at around 32 miles an hour for your coaster fun and enjoyment. The cost for one trip on this coaster is $5 and passes may be purchased for the day (height restrictions apply). The Nevada Zoological and Botanical Park is another great way to spend the day. While this is by no means the world's largest zoo, it is a nice place to take your kids and visit the wildlife (well some wildlife that isn't located on the strip, at any rate) of Las Vegas. Some of the animals you might see include chimpanzees (usually a hit with the little ones), emus, ostriches, wallabies, and flamingos. You can also choose to take a full or half day eco tour of the desert. These tours give you the opportunity to learn to the view the desert a little bit differently and are a great educational experience disguised as fun for your children. What would a stay in Venice be without a gondola ride? You do not, however, have to venture a transatlantic flight... for an authentic gondola experience, you only need to travel as far as the Venetian Hotel and Casino. You will float under bridges as your gondolier serenades you with the sounds of Venice. You can choose an outdoor gondola ride when the weather permits. The outdoor rides are only marginally less expensive and are still quite nice (they might even be preferable on a chilly desert night). Children 12 and under are very inexpensive passengers and if you are traveling with your partner, you can opt for a romantic 2 passenger gondola for an added fee. Reservations must be made in person and can only be made the same day beginning at 9 a.m. for the indoor gondola ride and 10 a.m. for the outdoor ride. If you're old enough to remember the commercials that asked if it was live or it was Memorex, then you will understand that reference when it comes to Madame Tussauds, Las Vegas. Where else can you play a round of golf with Tiger, sail the seas with Captain Jack Sparrow, marry George Clooney, become a playboy bunny,

and sing along side The King? You will see some of Hollywood's brightest stars, both living and living memories, at Madame Tussauds! Have fun meeting your favourites. This is a must-see stop on your trip to Vegas and will have the entire family rolling with laughter; be sure to bring the camera along for this one. Vegas might have been a little slow to see the light, but this city is really working to make this a fun place to be for the entire family and it is slowly building a nice selection of activities that don't directly involve gambling or the casinos. The casinos, recognizing good business sense when they see it, have been the pioneers of many of these family-oriented activities in hopes of encouraging more guests to come back to the city. Be sure to check out all the wonderfully fun things there are to do with the family during your Vegas stay.

Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! I hope you had a chance to meet me and Jason Kenney, the Official Opposition Leader and (I believe) the next Premier on his visit to the Strathmore and Chestermere areas. We are working hard to earn your trust. Where to start? Thank you to the Langdon Chamber for having us at their meeting. As always, I cannot express my deep gratitude enough for the wonderful people in Langdon who are so incredibly vibrant and inspirational. It was such a pleasure to spend some time with you and to top it off, my dear friend and mentor, our Member of Parliament, Martin Shields was there. Martin also held a rural crime round table in Keoma in February. I was really pleased to see so many folks turn up to talk about this crisis. Insp. Bernadine Chapman, the new head of the Southern Alberta division and her command staff from Strathmore, Beiseker, and Airdrie attended. They listened to some truly disturbing stories, but had some good news: they are making a big push to revive Rural Crime Watch and Citizens On Patrol. Please remember: watch out for your

neighbours and if you see suspicious activity, call 911. Do not try to take the law into your own hands. I was honoured to attend and even more honoured to speak alongside Martin. I wanted to chat a bit about the 80km/hour zone on Highway 1 between RR281 and Highway 791 (the high school road). This is something I speak about with the folks of both constituencies of Chestermere-Rocky View and Strathmore-Brooks fairly regularly. I have been advocating for improved safety at the high school intersection since I was elected. Two years back, we were presented with several choices; some expensive like an overpass, and some cheaper solutions like lights. The ideal solution for the high school intersection is an interchange and Alberta Transportation has a preliminary design in its books. Interchanges are expensive, and let’s be honest, the Province is accumulating huge debt, although the Government seems to have no problems spending your hardearned dollars on all sorts of their priorities, like paying billions to power companies to shut down perfectly good, clean, inexpensive coal-fired power generation while negotiating to buy power from our “friends” in the BC NDP government. We understand better than our Government that there is a time to tighten our belts, but your voice in this was outright disrespected. In April 2017, Alberta Transportation’s safety experts held a meeting at Camp Chestermere to present options for this intersection. Problem is, they didn’t tell anybody. I was in the Legislature and was not informed, nor was my office. We found out about it from Sherri Sommerfeld (Jaydon’s mom) and my assistant attended. Those who found out and showed up voted overwhelmingly for lights until an interchange could be built. Alberta Transportation’s safety experts themselves said a speed reduction would do nothing to address the root cause of the accident that took young Jaydon’s life. Now I know some folks think this is a bad idea, however, lights could be set up to only function when large numbers of people are trying to turn left across eastbound traffic, such as when school lets out. For the rest of the day, Highway 1 could be “on green”. I would like to state for the record that I fought in legislature for the option of lights pending an interchange, but vehemently against the reduction in speed as it is presently. Check out my video November 4, 2017 on www.facebook.com/ChestermereRockyview. The speed reduction is completely disrespectful of you, your input, and your safety. We had another suggestion of an overpass that basically takes the traffic over the highway to head west, but east bound traffic would just merge off the level crossing and onto the highway. The Government has ignored their own experts and dismissed you. What is a pipeline to you? Silly question I know, but I am curious-what does it represent to you? I know what it means for me. When we talk about pipelines, we are talking about prosperity, unity, sovereignty, and ethical resource development. It has become a living, breathing part of our everyday coffee discussions, and honestly, I am grateful for that. What is worrisome to me is that we are painted as dirty polluters by environmental activists and lobbyists who tell the world that we do not care about our earth, air or water. The Premier finally is starting to understand the gift we have under our earth, but has waited far too long to promote the province that she is privileged to run. We have a Prime Minister who visits India, supposedly promoting our country and our resources, but has shown little interest in promoting unity and prosperity in Canada by ensuring our export pipelines are built. How can he promote Canada to India, when Canada is not his priority? Why does he not respect our veterans, our job creators (or as Morneau likes to call us: “tax cheats”), vulnerable Canadians, or our resources? When the Premier and PM pander to US funded environmental activists, they forget that by forcing us to sell to the US at a steep discount they are transferring billions of dollars from Canada to the USA. The Americans are buying our oil cheap and exporting theirs for world price. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Cheering Them on to Victory

Strathmore’s Matrix Cheer All-Stars Are Headed for the Big Time Competitive cheerleading’s taken root in our community, and it’s flourishing. If you attended last summer’s Strathmore Stampede Parade – or any other number of local community events – you might have had the opportunity to see the high-flying acrobatics of the Matrix Cheer All-Stars in person. This cheer club is made up of a variety of youth from Strathmore and the surrounding communities, and recently, their Platinum Elite team has put our small, Southern Alberta town on the map. These 18 incredible athletes, ranging in age from 11-16, are heading down to Florida in May to represent the Matrix Cheer All-Stars at The Summit Championship. Hosted at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, this international competition will host teams from around the globe as they flip, twist, and battle each other in one of the toughest competitive cheer tournaments in North America. “It was kind of always just a dream,” Head Coach Cassi Weiss told me when I got the chance to ask her about Matrix Cheer’s participation in The Summit. “It’s been a lot of work. These kids, a lot of them have been cheering together for a lot of years now. When it happened…when we found out we’d won an invitation…it was one of those things where you’re hopeful, but there’s always that doubt in your mind that a small club from rural Alberta could compete at that level. I was hoping for it, but did I expect it? It was definitely a shock, in a good way. It was very, very exciting – especially with cheerleading being considered for the 2024 Olympics. We’re on the forefront of it, and we could be laying the groundwork for potential Olympic careers.” That said, the road to The Summit is a challenging one. Between summer training, weekend competitions, and weekly coaching, Matrix Cheer’s Platinum Elite team has certainly paid their dues to be competing on the world stage. When you’re doing something you’re so passionate about, though, it’s less of a chore, and more a labour of love. “We’ve actually got three back-to-back competitions coming up over the next couple of weekends,” Coach Weiss informed me, “After that, we have a full month to be working on routine upgrades. Our Platinum Elite team trains for about 4.5 hours a week, and each team member also spends time outside of practice to work on their tumbling skills on their own or in private lessons. It’s a lot to keep up with, but our team is so dedicated and loves what they’re doing so much that it doesn’t really feel like work. They’re here for the love of the sport, and it’s amazing to see.” It’s this love of the sport that is perhaps so noteworthy, as competitive cheerleading has traditionally never really taken root here in Canada the way it has south of the border. It seems like change is in the air, though. “I feel so strongly that this is a sport that’s growing, and that brings people together,” Coach Weiss passionately informed me. “It unites people across different age groups and body types and geographical locations. Going into next year and next season, we want to grow our team. Anybody who wants to be a part of it, get in touch, add us on Facebook, look for our tryouts. We want to grow the sport in our community and internationally, but we also just want to grow our club, and bring cheer to as many people as we can.” Spreading the love of sport and the joyfulness of cheer couldn’t be a better motivator for the plucky Platinum Elite team, and we couldn’t be prouder to watch them carry this attitude down to Florida in just two short months. However, before they can get there, they’re looking for a little bit of help. “We’re really canvasing the community and local small businesses to help us make this trip possible.” Coach Weiss related to me. “Our kids have done great volunteering everywhere they can, but now, we’re really looking for sponsorships to help us get down

Three Ways to Flex and Strengthen Your Resilience Muscle

During the Olympic figure skating competition, after every fall or miss in a routine, athletes moved ahead with their programs as though there wasn't a misstep. Discipline and focus enabled them to move forward with what appeared to be seamless effort. In addition, skills gained moving through difficulty establish confidence to push through when the next mountain appears. The resilience muscle is built one positive response at a time. You fall and get back up, fail and try again and always bounce back. Resilience grows as we develop confidence in our ability to solve problems and face hard situations. Focus shifts from dwelling on what happened to creating solutions and reaching our goals. Resilience is important because it brings us back to balance when situations tilt in the wrong direction.

Three Ways Flexibility Creates Balance and Strengthens Resilience Flexibility:

Playing in the snow or on the ice attracts a certain breed of hearty, resilient individuals. Only a select portion of humanity enjoys and thrives in such environments. Further, there are those who do create ways to challenge themselves against harsh frigid, blustery winter-scapes. I spent two weeks enthralled by athletes competing in the 2018 Olympics in Pyeong Chang, Korea. Their resilience and commitment to success and each other awed. Olympians repeatedly demonstrated how the human spirit triumphs during life shifting situations.

When Does Resilience Begin to Take Shape?

1. Allows you to experience strong emotions and realize when you may need to avoid experiencing them in order to continue. 2. Enables you to step forward and take action, deal with problems and meet the demands of daily living, or step back to rest and reenergize yourself. 3. Gives you freedom to spend time with loved ones to gain support and encouragement, or take time to nurture yourself. Resilience is important when we lose a loved one, lose a job, experience serious illness, the violence in our world comes too near or natural disasters strike. Technological shifts changed humanity's exposure and interaction with all of the above. It is vital to recognize the need for resilience in our lives. Don't leave home without it because you were born to bounce back.

Every time we fall and get back up, the resilience muscle is in use. According to Andrew Zolli, "Resilience is the capacity of a system, enterprise or person to maintain its core purpose and integrity in the face of dramatically changed circumstances".

A little bit of everything Gaylene Smith has been a waitress, tree planter, canoeing instructor, cemetery caretaker, fund development officer, communications officer, marketing coordinator, and currently is a career coach, and first aid instructor on the side. She still isn’t sure what she wants to be when she grows up other than healthy, wealthy and wise, although right now she is willing to take just one of the three. Gaylene can be reached by phone at 403-9344305 or gsmith@mcbridecareergroup.

They say when one door closes, another one opens. I have no idea who they are but I really hope they’re right. As of March 31st, this career coach is going to need to take her own advice. The door to the office is closing. My contract has ended. The powers-that-be have implemented a new strategic plan. They have rebalanced the current level of human capital. We were unsuccessful in securing the contract, there has been a reduction in workforce. I was made redundant, was outplaced, streamlined and no longer have somewhere to hang my corporate shingle. No matter how I word it, the outcome remains the same - as of April 1st I, along with the rest of the Strathmore McBride Team, will be getting up, not to go to work, but to find it. So what is an unemployed career coach to do? Well, the resume has been dusted off and updated. My LinkedIn profile looks clean and neat and I have been working to build my network. I have done the math and figured out the logistics of my EI claim if worse comes to worse and I don’t find employment right away. I have contacted the people I want to use as references and a) have asked for their permission, and b) sent them copies of any job descriptions I have been asked to interview for, and c) promised wine and or chocolate if I am successful in getting a new gig. I have done everything I can to prepare in order to find that new opportunity - that open door, but there is one thing that I still need and want to do. I need to say thanks. Thanks to MCG for the past four years, for taking the chance to hire a sarcastic and hug-a-phobic coach in the first place. Thanks for putting up with my need for policy and procedures and diet coke and peanut butter cups. To my teammates at the Strathmore office, THANKS! Thanks for making Monday mornings something to look forward to. Thanks for making me laugh until I can’t make a sound. Thanks for making me get in touch with my inner smurf. I might just now and again miss your hugs (shudder!) You have all become so much more than just the people I work with – you have become my other family. So thank you. (I’m not sure how to go on to an employer that doesn’t understand the vital role potluck lunches and safety meetings play!) Thanks to all of you that gave me the privilege of helping with your career and employment goals. I have learned so much from all of you. From the reluctant teenagers seeking their first after school job to the 75 year old that felt he was too young to retire. Thank you. Thank you to those of you that opened up your hearts and shared your stories and struggles. If I spent ten

Over the past few months, I have met with RCMP officials and municipal representatives on the subject of rural crime in our constituency. In February, I hosted several roundtables on rural crime. The roundtables were in Keoma and Taber. 361-2980 or martin.shields.c1B@parl.gc.ca. Please don’t hesitate As many of you know all too well, rural crime is a serious issue in Alberta. My federal Alberta Conservative colleagues are taking action to address the problem. We formed the Alberta Rural Crime Task Force to gather information from across the province. We are going to submit the input we collect directly to the government, and share it with the media. I have heard from many residents of our riding impacted by rural crime. I’m sure many of you know someone who has been affected. A quick scan of our local newspapers tells a similar tale about the prevalence of crime in our rural areas. There are many theories about what factors are contributing to the level of rural crime we are experiencing. Some say it’s a product of the economic downturn. Others think that we simply need to get more police officers on patrol in remote areas. Well, our Taskforce plans to get the facts so that we can provide clear, informed recommendations to the government. To do that, we need your help. We have spoken with law enforcement officials, and we’ve reviewed the available data. But we can’t stop there. If you live in a rural location, you probably have some thoughts on what’s going on in your area. That’s why we need to hear from you. We want your opinions on four key points, including crime prevention, crime investigation, prosecution, and punishment. However, the discussion isn’t limited to those specific points. If you have any ideas about what could be done to address rural crime, don’t hesitate to share them with us! (martin.shields@parl.gc.ca or 613992-0762). I’m sure you have also heard that the Liberal government is making changes to the Canada Summer Jobs Program. Organizations must now sign an attestation that may go against their values

in order to receive funding to hire students over the summer. I strongly believe this is wrong. I am completely opposed to the government’s decision to apply a values test to a taxpayer supported program. You should not need to agree with the governing party’s philosophy to take part in a government program. A student should not be deprived of a summer job because their potential employer does not share the government’s world view. Organizations across the country have rightfully voiced their opposition to this new policy. I have joined my Conservative colleagues in pressing the government to reverse this policy change. think of the tender touches, laughter, time spent together and happy memories created. Love also means being present through the hard times, through sickness and through the dark days that are part of life. It’s the kind of love that you can count on to always be there. A love that wraps you in its arms when you are afraid. A love that is understanding and unconditional. Having that kind of love in a person’s life can also come from close relationships with family and friends. I know this first hand because I’ve been embraced in that kind of love recently as I’ve faced numerous fears and times of vulnerability since the fire that consumed much of my home a few months ago. Now, I know that we all have fears. Fear of failure or fear of success. Fear of public speaking or fear of being judged. Fear of snakes or heights or storms or needles. Fear of the unknown. Fear of flying. Fear of small spaces. The list of fears that we as human beings experience is a long one. Napoleon Hill is quoted as saying that fears are nothing more than a state of mind. Tell that to someone screaming loudly on a chair swinging a broom at a mouse! Fears may indeed be a state of mind, however, they feel very real and can cause a person to withdraw, feel powerless and have moments of anxiety. Fears can diminish our quality of life, impact our work productivity and strain our relationships. Following the house fire, I began to experience fears that were completely new to me and in my mind, completely irrational. Yet, they were now a part of my life. Fear of winter storms that sound just like the fast-moving flames of a fire. Fear of the dark. Fear of being alone. Fear of noises. Fear of going to sleep. Fear of not waking up. Fear of having another fire. I am getting through these times with my best friend by my side. He and I share a deep bond of love, appreciation and respect for each other and this has given me the strength to keep moving forward to do what needs to be done, one step at a time. He reminded me that we don’t need courage to face our fears… we face our fears to get courage. Given a choice of being fearful or courageous, I choose courageous. The women who share their stories at Women Talk have also chosen courage. As one of the women who spoke at the February gathering said, “we free ourselves from the pain of our past by sharing with others.” It is by sharing our stories, our experiences and our life lessons that we can truly support, inspire and empower others to find their strength and courage. That night, this woman faced her fear of public speaking.

Are Those Bills Getting You Down?

Now as we head into the month of March, and with any luck, the end of what seems to have been an eternity of a deep freeze, it’s possible we could also see the final holiday bills trickling in. With interest rates on the rise, and not knowing what or when the next round of changes will look like, either to policies and/or interest rates, it may be the right time to revisit your current mortgage contract, and see if it makes sense to consider making some changes.

unnecessary interest!

Whether you have any of those previously mentioned holiday bills that you would like to consolidate, or perhaps look at securing a new rate for your mortgage based on the uncertainty of where rates may be in the next couple of years or so, now may be the time to sit down with a mortgage specialist and see if it makes sense to restructure your current mortgage financing. If you have outstanding credit card balances where the interest rates range from 20-30% or perhaps lines of credit with rates sitting between 6 and 10%, it might make sense to bundle these up in your existing mortgage at a much lower rate. By using the equity in your home (up to 80% of your home’s fair market value), you could be looking at dropping those credit card and line of credit rates down to the 3% range. If you are lucky enough not to be overburdened with other monthly obligations, perhaps you would like to use your equity for other things such as renovations to your home, purchasing a new vehicle, or an investment opportunity just to name a few. Using some of the equity in your home can be a cost effective way to finance many different goals. Usually, it comes down to some mathematical calculations to determine whether it makes sense to use your equity for such objectives. As always, I welcome any questions or comments you may have regarding the information contained in my articles. Until next month…this has been a mortgage moment with your Canadian Mortgage Guy. ~Jason Eldridge

The Accountable$ “We make your dollars make sense”

Do you want to walk through the portal to a happier life? If so, here are 12 situations that you should never tolerate if you want to live joyfully. See if you recognize yourself in any of these tolerations. If so, now is the time to clear them away.

1. Unhappiness at work.

You spend nearly half of your life at your job. If you are unhappy, do you really want to give away that much of your life? Think of the impact it has on your emotional well-being, your health, and your relationships. Think of the opportunities missed for not doing something that you love, that is fulfilling. Don’t settle for living this way forever. Find a job that you love. Get more education if necessary. At the least, make changes within your current job to lessen your unhappiness.

A long commute to work by car or public transportation is stressful and empty. Hours in a vehicle adds up to days, months, years wasted in traveling when you could be doing and living. 12 Critical Things You Should Never Tolerate There is so much in life that we just tolerate. Some of it we have to deal with (taxes, bad weather, traffic). But there’s a good portion of stuff that we tolerate even when we don’t have to. We step around things, overlook irritations, and mindlessly accept energy drains. Perhaps we’ve become so immune to these tolerations that we don’t recognize the negative impact they have on us. Sometimes just recognizing the things we are tolerating in life gives us a renewed sense of hope and energy. If you don’t know what’s pulling you down, it feels impossible to make your life better. Even small changes and shifts with these life tolerations can result in dramatic improvement in your outlook and mood. However, when you address some of your bigger tolerations, you can completely change the course of your life and open doors to a world of happiness and inner peace that you didn’t know existed. In the same way, we must search for these portals that will allow us to move to the next level of powerful living. Our tolerations are the brambles and vines growing over the portal doorway. We must clear them away to be able to open the door and walk through.

Are you overweight? Do you smoke? Are you sedentary? Do you eat junk? Do you abuse alcohol or other substances? An unhealthy lifestyle leads to an unhappy life. If you feel bad and look bad, you can’t enjoy life. This is your one and only life, and your body is your sacred garment. Take care of it now.

4. Draining Relationships.

If there are people in your life who are abusive, demeaning, angry, hurtful, not supportive, unethical, or crazy, it is time to let them go. You may have your reasons for hanging on, but do these reasons really outweigh the negative impact they have on your life? At the very least, find ways to cut back on interactions with these people.

5. A Disordered Living Space.

How you live is a reflection of who you are. You don’t need to live in a mansion with lots of stuff, but your living space should reflect the joy, order, and peace you want in your life. It should be clean, orderly, and have some expressions of beauty and warmth. It should feel welcoming to you and to guests in your home.

6. Negativity.

It is around us all the time, invading our minds like termites. We hear and see negative ideas and images on the news. Our friends and associates share their negative stories or reactions to life events. We hear negative lyrics in songs or watch violence and abuse in movies or on TV. Before we know it, we feel negative and depressed about our lives. Turn it off. Walk away. Stop listening. Instead watch, read, and listen to uplifting and positive ideas and information. 7. Too Much Stuff.

Over the years, we accumulate. We like to buy things. We like to have things. But these things require our time, energy, money, and effort. They lose their shine and we lose our interest. They become a burden — something we have to dust rather than enjoy. Get rid of this stuff and free up time and energy in your life.

8. Financial Problems.

The stress and emotional pain caused by financial problems steals your joy and peace in life. Whatever you are doing now or did in the past to cause the problem, do something about it now. Yes, some financial difficulties are unavoidable, but do whatever you can to lessen the stress, even if it means delivering pizzas for a while. If you are over-spending, stop. Sell some things. Very few “things” are worth the stress of money worries.

9. Living Out of Your Integrity.

Are you living in alignment with your values? Are you being true to yourself? Do you need to apologize for something or ask for forgiveness? When you are living outside of your integrity, it causes a disruption in your soul and your psyche. It drains your energy, fosters guilt, and saps your self-esteem. Get right with yourself and with others.

10. Living Without Fun.

If your life is all duty and work (even if the work is enjoyable), you are living out-of-balance. Fun and relaxation are necessary ingredients for a full and joyful life. By removing some of the other stresses from your life, you can make room for pleasurable activities, travel, and entertainment. The world is your beautiful oyster meant to be enjoyed.

11. Accepting Ignorance and Inertia.

We use both of these as excuses not to do something. We talk ourselves into our own inability to accomplish or change because we are afraid. We are afraid it will be hard, we are afraid we might fail, we are afraid it won’t work. You and everyone else knows these are just excuses to avoid. Don’t accept them anymore. Stretch yourself.

12. Lack of Communication.

In every single relationship you have, especially your primary relationship, healthy communication is essential to your life happiness. When you aren’t communicating properly with someone, you feel anxious, angry, frustrated, and helpless. Open, honest, loving communication is the number one ingredient for successful relationships. If you don’t know how to communicate in a healthy way, then learn how to and begin to implement these skills. Use the next few minutes to think about one area in your life you are just tolerating. How does this toleration impact your sense of well-being and joy? What is one action you could take today to begin to eliminate this toleration? Even a small change can make a huge shift for the better.

Revitalize Your Home for Spring Winter can be dark and cold, but spring is a time for warmth and light. Few things will brighten your mood as much as transforming your home to greet the season. Even inexpensive touches can have a big impact. Some simple spring redecorating will lift your spirits as much as spotting the first returning robin.

away for next year. For spring, the word to keep in mind is light, as in airy fabrics and sheer curtains that let natural light into your home. Slipcovers are an age-old way of changing the look of a room from winter to summer. You might be able to find them readymade and inexpensive. At least, buy new pastel throw pillows, which will quickly upgrade a room and give it a new look. Don’t forget to arrange fresh flowers in bright vases from the craft store or in your own pretty crystal. Spring flowers growing in your garden are free and, for city dwellers, choose the least expensive bouquets at the corner market. These flowers don’t know they’re not prize orchids, and will give their all to lift your spirits.

Your secret weapon is colour. The vibrant colours of spring will brighten otherwise ordinary home decor. Let nature lead you to your colour palette: delicate pink cherry blossoms, lavender blue hyacinths, sunny yellow forsythia and the pale green of new leaves. Do you smile when you see a basket of tulips? Why not take your cue from nature and be surrounded by those beautiful colours? For inspiration, take an early spring walk in the park. Breathe the softer air and study the scenery. When a colour makes you happy, that’s the one to choose for your home.

“In any room, hanging botanical drawings, framed or unframed, is another way of bringing nature into your home,” says Elizabeth Polish, interior designer and instructor at The Art Institute of New York City. “If you don’t want to buy original drawings, cut images from magazines, and mat and frame them yourself.”

You can easily and inexpensively change a room by buying a couple of gallons of paint and doing the job yourself. For years, white or ecru were the standard wall colours, but no longer. Be daring and choose a colour that makes you feel good, and a little “out there.” If you don’t like it, you can always paint over it.

About the kitchen, Polish says, “Even if you can’t redecorate, start an herb garden on your windowsill. Grow fresh dill, chervil, and mint. Watching things grow brings you in tune with the season of rebirth. And be sure to use the herbs to spark up your meals.”

Take down heavy drapes. They may have made you feel cozy in the cold months, but for now, get them cleaned and put them

Freshening the bathroom is also easy. Change the shower curtain and towels and you have an instant new look. Look for sales on bathroom accessories to complete the picture.

Bring on the spring. You will be ready with a home that has been refreshed, revived and renewed.

GARBURATOR’S This is a list of the DO's and DONT's when it comes to your Garburator!

YES • Pour a little dish soap inside and let the garbage disposal run for a minute or so with some cold water after washing dishes. • Run your garbage disposal regularly. Frequent use prevents rust and corrosion, assures that all parts stay moving and prevents obstructions from accumulating. • Grind food waste with a strong flow of cold water. Why cold water? It will cause any grease or oils that may get into the unit to solidify. • Grind small chicken and fish bones, egg shells, small fruit pits, etc. Particles such as these clean the garburators walls. • Grind peelings from citrus fruits such as lemons or oranges to freshen up drain smells. • It is best to cut large items into smaller pieces. Put them into the garbage disposal one at a time, instead of trying to shove them all in at once.

196 Wildrose Cresent 1860 sq ft - $464,900

204 Wildrose Cresent – Columbia 3 1748 sq ft $449,900 Spring possession

NO • Don’t Put Anything In The Garburator That Is Not Biodegradable Food. • Don’t grind anything combustible. • Don’t grind metal or glass. • Don’t grind cigarette butts. • Don’t pour grease, oil or fat into your garburator. • Don’t use hot water when grinding food waste. Hot water will cause grease to liquefy and accumulate, causing drains to clog. • Don’t grind extremely fibrous material like corn husks, celery stalks, onion skins, and artichokes. Fibres from these can tangle and jam the garburators motor and block drains. • Don’t turn off the motor or water until grinding is completed. • Don’t put too many potato peels down the garburator. The starches in the potatoes will turn into a thick paste and may cause blades to stick. • Don’t put large amounts of food down the garburator at once. Feed food into the garburator a little at a time with the cold water running. • Don’t put expandable foods into your garburator. Foods like pasta and rice expand when you add water in a pot; they do the same thing once inside your pipes or garburator and are the cause of many jams and clogs. • Don’t grind large animal bones (beef, pork etc.). • Avoid putting coffee grounds down the garbage disposal. They won’t harm the garbage disposal and they’ll actually help eliminate odours. However, they can accumulate in drains and pipes, causing clogs. • Don’t use harsh chemicals like bleach or drain cleaners. They can damage blades and pipes.
