THIS MONTH WITH

NEWSY The

Neighbour Magazine

This old world of ours is changing at an ever-accelerating rate. If you take a look at how people were thinking on page 25 (in 1955) and the way people are thinking nowadays the perspective almost seems skewed. The world is changing at such an accelerated rate it seems at times hard to comprehend. The world is changing faster than at any time in history. When I was a kid I used to build forts in the trees alongside the rail tracks and play kick the can after dark, and even stay out late in the summer and catch “June bugs” and put them in jars. Now I see children the same age as my fort building days navigating the web through wirelessly connected smart phones and getting weepy when their transfer rates are too slow. I watch my own grandchild play games on an iPad and I think to myself WOW, I remember when we watched black and white T.V and computers were just something too big to even comprehend.

Everything is evolving around us, every second of every day and so we must all change together, as with the change we at “The Newsy” have made! And, “so let it be written and so it will be done” as said by the Pharaoh of Egypt some millennial ago, we have taken the term literally and evolved with change. We are coming quickly upon a decade of publishing “The Newsy Neighbour Magazine” and I remember like it was yesterday when I told people the name “The Newsy Neighbour” some people got a little smirk on their face and said, “The Nosy Neighbour”? Back in the day, people would always talk about “you know, that nosy neighbour of ours” and that was always in the back of my mind. You see we chose the name “The Newsy Neighbour” because we were a rural magazine and we wanted to unite the small communities just east of Calgary together, which is why we felt “Newsy Neighbour” seemed appropriate enough. But as with everything nowadays we must change with the times so we have now changed our branding to “The Newsy”, which we are, and to which we always will be! NEWSY! Now having said all that, there is so much more exciting and ever evolving events with “The Newsy”.

After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. CELEBRATING THE NEW LOOK OF THE NEWSY NEIGHBOUR! Exciting Things Lay Ahead

In just ten issues, The Newsy Neighbour will be celebrating its tenth anniversary. That’s one decade of delivering quality community news, and supporting the thriving Albertan communities of Langdon, Strathmore, Chestermere, and many others. We couldn’t be prouder to be commemorating such an important milestone. More than that, we’re grateful to you, our readers, for sticking with us over all these years. We truly love working with the people and businesses that we get to engage with every month in putting together each issue, and wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it weren’t for the enthusiasm and excitement of our readers. Everybody who isn’t afraid to go out and take part in their communities – whether it be by attending events, managing or supporting small businesses, or just extending a friendly hand to a neighbour in need – always does what they can to contribute towards making sure the place they call “home” is constantly growing and changing for the better. We love seeing this continuous drive toward change and improvement, and feel that we wouldn’t be holding up our end of things as a community magazine if we didn’t do the same. That’s why we’re so excited this month to be unveiling the brandnew look of The Newsy Neighbour! We’ve been inspired by the many businesses and individuals who are always working towards bettering the communities they’re a part of, so we put our heads together here at the magazine to come up with a few ways that we could do the same. One of the ideas we landed on was this re-brand.

Of course, we’re fully aware that slapping a new logo on the front of our magazine doesn’t have much of an impact on the community as a whole, but hear me out. In creating and re-designing the Newsy Neighbour logo, we’re re-iterating our commitment to our readership, local businesses, and the communities that we are a part of. Re-branding The Newsy Neighbour was no easy process – we 8 •

wanted to come up with a design that would reflect our intentions of continued growth, without alienating the dedicated readers who have been with us these past 10 years. It’s a difficult balancing act, coming up with a design that speaks to our desire to stay fresh and innovative, while respecting where we’ve been and everyone who’s been along for the ride over the course of our 116-issue run. We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we want to make sure that the flavour of The Newsy Neighbour stays whole and intact, while still demonstrating our passion to expand and provide an exciting, unique perspective on the goings-on within our southern Alberta communities. That’s what this re-brand means to us, at the end of the day. Sure, it’s a chance to make the magazine look a bit flashier and a tad more modern, but that’s almost beside the point. What we’re really, truly looking to do is demonstrate our drive and focus to continue putting out the best magazine that we know how, in order to help serve the community and foster its growth as effectively as we can. We said it once already at the top of this article, but it bears repeating: we love our community, we love The Newsy Neighbour, and we’re always going to continue to look for ways to do right by both. Excited for the brand-new look of The Newsy Neighbour? Come celebrate it with us this month at the 3rd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival, happening June 17th, followed by Sessions in the Park – a free outdoor concert in Kinsmen Park! In addition to all of the other festivities that will be taking place (face painting, BBQ, refreshments, and more!), we’ll be taking the opportunity to officially unveil and celebrate our new look! Be sure to come out and join us.

Before we close out this article, we’d be remiss if we didn’t take one more moment to really drive home how grateful we are to be a part of such an incredible community of businesses and individuals. We can’t imagine anywhere out there being as welcoming and appreciative as the readership that we serve, and we really are indebted to all of you for supporting The Newsy Neighbour and allowing us to do what we do. Thanks for everything, and we hope you like the new look of The Newsy Neighbour – an altogether different magazine!

You are creating more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally, and in our community provide the most jobs to residents. You are investing in your community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, they are less likely to leave the community, and are more invested in the community’s future. You are encouraging local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. You are helping to keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun -- all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of out town. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe Participating in the Strathmore shopping challenge is fun and chances are pretty good you will tell people you are doing it, OR people will see you doing it. This will encourage others to do the same. The more people that shop locally, the stronger our community will be. Challenge your friends. See who can finish first, and then drop off your contest forms to The Newsy Neighbour table at the festival and.....

Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms – continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community.

delicious food and refreshments, and so much more! As much fun as the bouncy castles and beer gardens are, though, the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival really starts to shine at that point where everybody gets involved. Everything we do is at its best when the community gets behind it – and lucky for us, we live in a place full of some of the most passionate community members and business owners around! Last year, attendance was up double over what we saw during the Festival’s first run, which absolutely blew us away. What we loved even more than those numbers, though, was see-

ing the enthusiasm that business owners brought to the streets of Strathmore, and the consequent embracing of these local shops and services by everyone attending the Festival. The main goal of the Festival has always been about promoting small business within Strathmore, and the past two events have been entirely successful in that drive. We’re really looking forward to seeing the best and brightest of our community’s local businesses showcased in sunny Strathmore once again – we’re sure everyone will bring their A game, as they always do!

After a long, miserably cold winter that seemed to hang around forever (including a brief, stormy encore that brought with it a windy snowfall at the end of May!), warm weather and sunny days have finally returned to southern Alberta. We love summer on the Prairies, and are excited to kick off the season by bringing our 3rd Annual Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival to Strathmore once again!

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Newsy Neighbour event if it wasn’t bigger and better than the year before. To that end, we’re expanding the musical element of the Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival in a big way. First, we’ll be kicking off the live entertainment with a special Backyard Jam, showcasing some of the best and brightest up-and-coming musical talent, all local and from right here, in our own “backyard”! We’ll be following the Jam up with the inaugural edition of Sessions in the Park – an outdoor concert with a musical lineup you won’t want to miss! If you’ve been following along with our monthly Live Music columns, you’ll surely see some familiar names and faces: New Soul Duo, Envy, and Sarah Beth Keeley will be performing live, starting at 4PM, with fan favourites Junk heading up the after party. Of course, none of this would be possible without the gracious support of our backers at Legends Kitchen and Bar, who are sponsoring Sessions in the Park so that it remains free for everyone to come out and enjoy the show!

The Get to Know Your Neighbour Festival is a highlight of the year for us, matched only by our annual Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards in scope and scale. We love hosting this summertime event, because it really gives us the opportunity to let our hair down and have some fun. There will be entertainment for folks of all ages, with face painting, BBQs, giveaways, lots of

We’ve pulled out all the stops to make this event a memorable one, and can’t wait to bring the very best in local business and music to Strathmore on June 17th. High Steppin’ Daddy

W

PLAYING REAL MUSIC, FOR REAL PEOPLE By: Kyle Penn

When I got the chance to sit down and speak to Glenn Baker from High Steppin’ Daddy, we’d both just been through one heck of a day. It was late May, and southern Alberta had been hit with what meteorologists were referring to as an “inland cyclone” – essentially, a storm that would have been called a hurricane if it had originated out on the ocean. Driving rain interspersed with bits of snow had been rattling the windows all afternoon and evening, as 100km/h winds howled across the Prairies and blew away everything that wasn’t tied down. I’d been without power for several hours leading up to my chat with Baker, and he’d spent the evening helping out some neighbours who were on the verge of flooding due to sump pump troubles. Still, despite all that, he graciously insisted on honouring his commitment to chat with me about his band, High Steppin’ Daddy. As I greeted Baker and we exchanged pleasantries, it was clear as he relayed the events of the day that he had had a long one – which, to be frank, was completely understandable. A couple of minutes into our conversation, though – the moment we started talking about music – Baker’s entire persona changed. The second our discussion turned toward guitars and bandmates, Baker came alive, and all the wearies of the day seemed to slip away as he chatted with me enthusiastically about High Steppin’ Daddy and his role within the band. It was as though the harrowing storm and subsequent troubles hadn’t even taken place just hours earlier. Such is the healing, invigorating power of music! “For me, when I can sing a harmony with another person,” Baker summed up for me, “like, a three-part harmony, or something like that – that’s something that I really get a reward out of. It feels good. That, and the sharing of music. As long as the song is there, and we’re all sharing that song together, that’s the cool part for me.” To this end, I can whole-heartedly agree: there’s nothing quite like the feeling of sharing and collaborating with another artist, especially when you throw in the exhilarating sensation that comes from performing live in front of an audience. Baker has made a name for himself performing with local musical sensation High Steppin’ Daddy, a group that focuses primarily on the golden age of country (think Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and their ilk), while bringing their own spin and character to the sounds and songs that people have grown to love. “We do all kinds of music – classic rock, new country, some blues –

we’re all over the map,” Baker explained. “But the catalyst of High Steppin’ Daddy is that particular, country style of music. For me, specifically, I find that era of music to be one in which artists honed their craft, and actually sang the notes, and played the riffs…it was real music.” Perhaps it’s this affection for the stylings of a bygone epoch of country that’s behind the driving ideology of High Steppin’ Daddy: Real Music for Real People. This philosophy certainly holds true for the nature of the band, as their efforts fall in line with a group that’s more collaborative than it is exclusive. “Nowadays, basically, when I book a gig, I’ll say, ‘Who’s around? Who’s available for that show?’” Baker elucidated. “Most of our members tour with recording artists, on top of having young families and day jobs…so there’s probably a roster of more than five, less than ten players who can sit in at any given point. It also gives us the freedom to call different people, depending on what the gig is. If it’s a straightahead country gig, I always like to bring in a pedal steel guitar. I’m a keyboardist, but I’ll play bass, or I’ll play guitar, depending on who’s available.” As well as giving High Steppin’ Daddy the flexibility to book more gigs more often, having a standing roster of talented musicians also goes a long way towards making each of their shows that much more enjoyable for their audiences. Even if you’ve seen High Steppin’ Daddy before, every performance is unique, depending on who’s present, what instruments they’re playing, and what the on-stage dynamic moulds itself into on that particular evening. While High Steppin’ Daddy might be playing for Real People, they themselves are anything but. Having performed together for more than half a decade at huge gigs like the Big Valley Jamboree, Craven Country Jamboree, the Grey Cup Festival, Carnaval de Québec, and more, High Steppin’ Daddy have played in nearly every province in Canada – in addition to performing all the way across the Atlantic, in France! They’ve made quite a name for themselves over the years, maintaining a gig schedule that keeps them constantly busy and hard at work. With multiple members having been nominated on numerous occasions for prestigious CCMA awards, High Steppin’ Daddy is a band with gobs of talent, and loads of character to boot. Some of the more regular players include Baker himself, as well as Owen Ehgoetz, Matt Beatty, Mitch Jay, and Kent Macrae – but, as I’ve mentioned, these members are regularly joined or filled in for by other incredibly talented individuals, which definitely plays into the charm that High Steppin’ Daddy brings to the stage every time they perform! If you’ve got a penchant for Real Music being played by phenomenally talented, local musicians, don’t miss High Steppin’ Daddy when they stop by Legends in Strathmore on June 9. Whatever your musical pleasure, we’re sure that High Steppin’ Daddy will fit the bill!

When attempting a chip shot your hands should stay ahead of the ball. This will help you create the downward motion you need to lift the ball up and out of its unfortunate location.

by Be Conrad

In the world of golf, sometimes the hardest shots are also the shortest ones. Golf fans may marvel at those spectacular hole-in-one shots, but just as often, the golfers who are accurate over short distances are the most successful. Whether your goal is to go out on the pro circuit someday or just have a good time with your regular foursome, you need to know how to handle the occasional chip shot. Even the best golfers end up with chip shots once in a while, and how they handle them can make a huge difference in their final scores. Here are some tips for handling those chip shots like a pro.

1

www.oxbowgolf.ca

No golfer wants to end up with a chip shot, but if you golf a lot you will end up in this situation sooner or later. As with so much in the world of golf, how you recover from adversity can make a huge difference in your game overall. The golfer who learns to handle those chip shots with grace and style will ultimately thrive, while the golfer who gets flustered will not. You do not have to be an expert golfer to learn how to handle the occasional chip shot like a pro. Getting plenty of practice, learning to visualize the ball and where you want it to go, choosing the right club for the job and working on adjusting and refining your stance can all help you recover from those tough chip shots and get on with the rest of the game.

"It's good sportsmanship to not pick up lost golf balls while they are still rolling." Visualize your shot. -Mark Twain Instead of focusing on where the ball is currently, focus on where you want it to be. Visualization is a vital skill for any golfer, and it will serve you especially well when you need to make a tough chip shot.

Choose your club with care.

2

It is important to choose the right club before attempting a chip shot. A sand wedge works well for tight shots of less than 15 feet, while a 7-iron is a good choice for longer chip shots.

Practice as much as you can.

3 4 20 •

Even if it means deliberately creating chip shots, practice is vital to learning this unique skill. Pick a day when you have plenty of time, set up some chip shots and experiment with the best way to recover from the situation.

Use a narrow stance when attempting a chip shot. Your feet should be no further than a foot apart, and your shoulders should be open and loose as you aim for the spot you visualized earlier.

The other day I was having a sentimental moment and I dug out all my past Issues of The Newsy. I found these in our Issue 19, which was in May of 2009. Holy “golfamania,” that was just about 100 Issues ago!! Crazy, I guess after 8 years we could share them with you again without the concern that you might remember them.

Top Ten Signs You’re Golfing Too Much When you pick something up off the floor, you have to lean on your putter. The only number on your speed dial is the local golf course. You have your priorities in order: food, shelter, greens fees, job. You tell the lost motorist that the gas station is only a par 4 away on the left. You’d like to take off your glove but hey, why bother? Whenever you see a hole in the ground, you squat, squint and read the line. You’re vaguely aware of living with a woman, allegedly your wife. You ask the shopper ahead in the checkout line if you can play through. Before you pick up the salt shaker, you mark its position with a dime.

Welcome GOLFaholics! Here are some telltale signs you may have a problem: You take naps with your putter. You have a pet name for any of your golf clubs and bag. You schedule events, parties, or functions so they won’t interfere with your tee time. You spend over $300 on a new club solely for the hope that you might gain an extra 3 yards with it. You only remember the great shots you had… you’re in complete denial about those bunkers. You have nightmares about hitting the ball into hazards or lake monsters eating your golf ball. Your copy of Hogan’s 5 Lessons is the only book you have opened in the last month. You own a box of yellow balls solely because they show up better in the snow. (Which means you plan on playing when it’s below 0!) You clean your clubs more than your car. You take your own putter to mini golf. You think someday you’ll shoot your age, when a more realistic goal would be to shoot your weight. You know there’s more to life than golf, but you’re not interested in finding out what it is. You quit the game forever, twice a month. You buy every new golf gizmo that comes out. You think you’re skillful and everybody else is lucky. You miss the ball, but still think it was a great swing. The new clubs you just bought cost more than your mortgage and car payment combined. You will happily drive over an hour to play a course, but complain when the spouse wants to go somewhere ½ hour away.

Jock & GOLF S T SPOR

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME

Is it June yet - a CFL hash tag that was trending last month on Twitter.

left tackle Dan Federkeil had off-season surgery to repair a torn labrum. One of the key off-season signings for general manager John Hufnagel was 4th year center Pierre Lavertu. The rumour mill had the former 2014 first overall pick homesick and wanting to play closer to home in Montreal. The problem is, Lavertu is coming off an injury-plagued season, making only 8 starts. A healthy season is imperative to this team's success.

The Calgary Stampeders open defense of their Western conference championship was this month and despite some off-season changes, they are considered the team to beat. "I was very happy with what we did last season," said quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. "But it didn't define us - what defines you is the last game of the season, who's the last one standing and it wasn't us. Every time I step onto the field this season - that will motivate me."

Here are 4 players and positions to watch as training camp unfolds and the team kicks off their pre-season schedule on June 6th vs. the BC Lions at McMahon Stadium.

Mitchell is coming off a season where he completed 68% of his passes for 5,385 yards with 32 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. He was named a West all-star, a CFL all-star and the CFL's Most Outstanding Player award. Is it possible for him to get any better?

1) Defensive tackle Randy Colling Colling is not your typical rookie. He has played four years in the Arena Football League for the Cleveland Gladiators before the team made him the first pick - 6th overall in the 2017 CFL draft. He attended mini-camps with the New York Jets and Green Packers before signing a futures contract with the Buffalo Bills. He also spent time with the New York Giants. He was born in the U.S. but he recently obtained his Canadian citizenship, qualifying for national status. There is a spot open on the defensive line as Junior Turner recovers from surgery and starts the season on the injury list. Colling is competing for the job against Derek Wiggan and international free agent signing Bryan Hall.

"He will and the funny part is, he's always trying to get better," said quarterback coach Ryan Dinwiddie. "Obviously if you're driven to get better and you can take the coaching and not look for a pat on the back all the time, which Bo does - I think you strive and get better. It's also a respect factor and a pride thing. Bo wants to be the best he can be every day and it is pretty easy to get better when you are working that way." While Stampeder coaches and fans are not too concerned about Mitchell, there are major red flags on the offensive line. The best lineman in the country, right tackle Derek Dennis, bolted to the Saskatchewan Rough Riders during free agency. Former first round draft pick Karl Lavoie retired. Shane Bergman hurt his knee during an off-season workout and veteran

in football, basketball and track at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Fla. The Stampeder secondary will be tough to crack with returning starters Ciante Evans, Jamar Wall, Joshua Bell, Brandon Smith and Tommie Campbell but surprises do happen.

3) Receiver Lamar Durant The 2016 season hit a minor road bump early as he suffered an ankle injury in week 1. While his numbers were okay, the Simon Fraser grad is now heading into his third season and expectations are very high. There will be an intense battle for two national starting positions at receiver. Former U of C standout Anthony Parker is the incumbent. Veteran Rory Kohlert was signed as a free agent and head coach Dave Dickenson is also expecting a huge improvement from 2nd year player Juwan Brescasin.

4) Quarterback Ricky Stanzi Although he's listed as number four on the depth chart and likely a long shot to make the roster behind Mitchell Gale and Andrew Buckley, the organization is very high on the player who was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round (135th overall) of the 2011 National Football league draft. "One thing I always chuckle about with guys coming with NFL pedigree's - they think they're going to come up and dominate!" laughed Dickenson. "Ricky didn't think that at all. He just wants a chance to play. He's a pro, he's not a young kid (he's 27) and I think he's a student of the game."

Father’s Day is a very important day of the year and your dad should be given as much attention as your mom got on Mother’s Day. My children took me out to The Strath-

more Station for Mother’s Day and it was packed to the rafters. I wonder if it will be the same on Father’s Day. Somehow, I think perhaps Dad might prefer a few different activities than brunch. He might prefer to go golfing, hiking, biking or camping. Whatever your dear old Dad chooses to do at the end of the day, nothing would make him happier than a special supper, and you know Dads love BBQ. You can BBQ just about anything and DAD will love it. How easier could that possibly be?

BARBECUE CHICKEN 4 (4oz) boneless skinless chicken breasts 8 regular slices of bacon 1/2 cup Sweet Honey Barbecue Sauce, divided (half for basting, half for drizzling on top of the cheese) 4 slices medium cheddar cheese, quartered Preheat grill. Wrap each piece of chicken tightly with two slices of bacon. Place chicken on grill and cook about 6 to 7 minutes on each side until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F, basting with barbecue sauce as desired. Top with 4 quarter pieces of cheese, shingled over the chicken breast. Drizzle with remaining barbecue sauce and heat until cheese is melted. Remove from grill and serve.

WESTERN BARBECUE BURGERS 2 pounds ground chuck 1/4 cup Barbecue Sauce 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup Barbecue Sauce for basting 2 sweet or yellow onions Olive Oil 6 slices American cheese 12 slices bacon 6 buns 6 lettuce leaves 2 tomatoes Pickle slices

Combine ground beef, 1/4 cup barbecue sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper in a large bowl. Mix well. Shape into 6 patties. Refrigerate until grill is ready. Heat gas grill to medium high. Lightly coat onion slices with oil and salt and pepper. (Note: You can stick a wooden skewer through each onion slice to hold it together. Wooden skewers should be soaked in water beforehand.) Grill onion slices over direct heat for 3 minutes per side. Then move them to one side of grill and turn heat to low on that side. Baste them with barbecue sauce and remove them from grill when they are soft and charred. Lightly sprinkle burger patties with salt and pepper and place on the grill for 3 to 5 minutes. Flip over and continue to grill for about 3 minutes. Baste the tops with barbecue sauce. Top each burger with a slice of American cheese just before removing from grill. (Internal temperature should be 160°F.) Place lettuce and tomato slices on buns, top with burgers, onions, bacon, and more barbecue sauce. ritations and tumours. Nowadays, this popular herbal remedy is recognized world-wide as a natural cleanser and toner, but witch hazel has many more uses than simply to clarify skin and shrink pores. You’ve probably noticed witch hazel extract in the list of ingredients in many beauty and health products, as its powerful antioxidant and astringent benefits are known to help speed healing, prevent signs of aging, stop cellular damage that can lead to skin cancer and eradicate bacteria that lives within the pores of the skin.

Now that you know a little bit more about witch hazel and how it works, here are some of the reasons you should start using it.

TH & L A E H TY BEAU

Puffy Eyes

Puffy eyes are a common skin problem that many people face. It can be caused by allergies, stress, overindulging in alcohol, sun exposure, cigarette smoking and many other factors. The next time you wake up and find yourself with puffy eyes, be sure to have some witch hazel around, and you’ll have a quick fix for that problem. Witch hazel is known to tighten skin, which helps reduce under eye baggage and puffiness. Just soak some cotton balls with witch hazel, and apply it to closed eyes. Let it remain for five minutes or so, allowing it to soak into the skin. Repeat one more time for severe puffiness. As it can be more effective if it’s cool, storing your witch hazel in the refrigerator is a good idea, particularly if this is the main reason you plan to use it. Sometimes you don’t have bags under your eyes, but you get a kind of general puffiness. This can come from fatigue, crying, allergies, or other irritants. Just dab a couple of cotton balls in witch hazel, and then set them on top of your eyelids. Keep your eyes closed. Take a 10-minute catnap, sit up, and look in the mirror. The puffiness and redness should be gone, or at least greatly reduced.

Witch Hazel

Few people have heard of “Witch Hazel.” It sounds a little like some sort of ingredient used in a magic potion, doesn’t it? Well, as it turns out, you could say it actually is a “magic potion” because it is a little bit of a miracle. Witch hazel is a topical astringent derived from the bark and leaves of Hamamelis virginiana, the common or North American witch-hazel shrub. The bark, twigs, and leaves of the witch hazel plant are used to extract active properties known as tannins and polyphenols, which are added either to water or alcohol to produce distilled witch hazel extract or witch hazel water. It’s the tannins in witch hazel extract that make it a natural astringent, as they help to remove excess oil from the skin. That’s why it’s considered one of the best natural acne treatments out there and is used in all sorts of washes and treatment gels. Native Americans have long recognized the medicinal properties of witch hazel and used a decoction of the boiled plant parts to treat skin ir-

Eczema

If you’re suffering from eczema, witch hazel can help with that too, thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties. It not only helps stop that incessant itching, but it improves symptoms like scaling, redness, burning and even scarring. One study found that patients with eczema who were treated with witch hazel on one arm, and a non-steroidal cream on the other over three weeks, experienced just as effective relief in improving symptoms with the witch hazel as compared to the cream.

Varicose Veins

Soak soft terry cloth in witch hazel and lay over skin affected by varicose veins to temporarily reduce swelling and pain. Also, remember to prop up the areas to be treated as high as possible. This will decrease blood pressure in swollen veins and maximize the effectiveness of your treatment.

After Shave

For both men and women, witch hazel is a great follow-up to shaving any part of the body. Not only will it stop bleeding from The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

nicks or cuts, anti-inflammatory witch hazel can also work to prevent razor burn. Furthermore, those who employ hot wax treatments for hair-removal may also apply witch hazel as an anti-inflammatory post-waxing or use it to stop bleeding from damaged hair follicles.

Hemorrhoids

Witch hazel is great for easing the pain, itching, swelling, and bleeding of hemorrhoids. In fact, it’s a common ingredient used in many commercial hemorrhoid creams. Just mix witch hazel with a carrier like Aloe Vera gel and apply to affected areas for fast relief.

Diaper Rash

Anti-inflammatory properties of witch hazel make it an effective and safe remedy for soothing pain from diaper rash. Regular application will also assist in healing damaged skin faster, further reducing your baby’s discomfort.

TOP TIPS FOR RUNNERS TO AVOID INJURY AND OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE

back. Sound familiar to anyone? Where to start – stretch your hip flexors (to improve hip extension) and your glutes (to improve hip flexion).

Warm up and Cool Down

Neutral Feet

Practice standing, walking and running with a neutral foot position. This is the position that is optimal for the muscles, joints and tissues of the foot to be in to avoid many of the common injuries experienced by runners. While orthotics can often help people regain and maintain a lost neutral foot position (as long at they have their orthotics on), the ideal is for us to develop our own stability in the foot through developing strength and control of the whole lower limb – the most notable in this instance would be to work on strengthening the glutes and the intrinsic muscles of the feet.

A Supple Thoracic Spine

We all spend far too much time with our arms out in front of us – sitting at a computer, driving a car, playing on our smartphones. There is a constant barrage of strain on our thoracic spines, that ultimately leads to decreased thoracic mobility. This directly impacts our ribcage mobility and consequently, our breathing mechanics. After a sprint when you find yourself trying to breathe as deeply as possible, do you automatically hunch over in the back and curl up in a ball to help you breathe more deeply, or do you put your hands behind your head and stand as upright as possible? Spend some time mobilizing your thoracic spine into extension and rotation to counterbalance the over exposure your t-spine gets to flexion.

Full Ankle Range of Motion

If you are a runner, you want to make sure you have full dorsiflexion range of motion (think trying to bring your foot up towards you so your toes are pointing up to the sky). This is very common and leads to issues like rolled ankles and plantar fasciitis. The easiest way to increase ankle dorsiflexion range of motion is to stretch and roll your calf muscles.

Everyone knows this is what we should do, but in our busy lives how many of us actually do it? Warm ups should include non-linear movement (think arm circles versus straight punching jabs). This prepares the body for the three-dimensional world of movement and applies to all muscle groups and joints. Warm up for a time inversely proportional to the activity you are going to be doing (for example – a 100m sprinter’s warm up would be a lot longer than that of a marathon runner). Cool downs are equally as important to help propel metabolic waste products through the blood and lymphatic systems.

Practice Good Movement

Can you squat to full depth without rounding your back, your knees going forward over your toes, your arches collapsing in or your knees dropping in? Can you jump and land on one foot without compromising a neutral foot position or your knee dropping in? Practicing these types of movement with good technique in a slow and controlled environment will transfer into better mechanics when running…which means less injuries!

Focus On Your Hot Spots

Pain when running is a sign that something is angry and is being pushed too far. Try not to ignore the pain until it gets worse and stops you from running altogether. Instead, explore your tissues above and below the area that is sore. For example, the majority of people I see who come to me with knee pain, have brutally tight quads and calf muscles. When I palpate these muscles, the client often hits the roof because these muscles are so tender! When you push on/roll out a ‘normal’ muscle, it should not hurt. When you push on an overworked, overtight, angry muscle you will often find ‘hot spots’ that are very painful to push on. Focus on these hot spots. Although they may feel uncomfortable, a bit o f foam rolling or myofascial ball rolling directly on these ‘hot spots’ works wonders. The Bank Athletic Club

Full Hip Range of Motion

Again, we all spend far too much time sitting down, which plays havoc on the muscles and tissues around the hip. If you do not have full hip flexion and extension, when you run at anything more than a jogging pace, another joint in your body is going to have to compensate. Normally this is either your knees or lower

Health awareness is not just for women these days. More and more men are taking a second look at their own health. ARE YOU? Yes, that means YOU! Have you ever thought about adding a massage treatment or two to the mix? Here are some of the different types of massage and their benefits: These are for relaxation and who does not need to relax from time to time? Swedish massage is a gentle treatment involving soft, long, kneading strokes as well as a light rhythmic, tapping stroke mainly focused on the top layers of the muscles, combining with the movements of the joints. Relieving muscle tension, stiffness, and even pain and resulting in a relaxing and energizing massage. You can integrate essential oils for a Raindrop Therapy massage, which boosts your immune systems both antiviral, and antibacterial, plus helps you relax to the point where you sleep deeper and longer. Hot Stone massage can also be very relaxing and soothing by using warmed stones and placing these on certain acupressure points and then massaging those areas with gentle pressure. This releases stiffness, tension and pain, leaving you in a relaxed state! There is another massage that can be put into the relaxation group and that is Chair massage. It is done with you sitting totally clothed in a special designed chair. Most sessions are only 15 – 20 minutes and have the same benefits as a regular massage, but focus on the neck, shoulders, back, arms and hands; leaving you so calm the rest of the day is a pleasure! Next, we have massages which go much deeper with therapeutic and neuromuscular work on trigger points, acupressure points, and the fascia (connective tissue) of the muscle systems. These treatments should only be administered by a therapist who is trained in these specific areas. Not every

Massage Therapist knows all of these different types of massage, so please ask before beginning your session. Types include: Deep Tissue Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy Massage, Sports Massage, Shiatsu Massage, Thai Massage, and Reflexology Massage. Each works on different parts of the muscle, fascia, and joints to help an injured muscle heal faster and have less pain. For most of these treatments the therapist has to be trained to go deeper so there will be initially a little more pain during the session. This pain will only last for a short time and should go away within minutes. Some people are more sensitive than others, but working closely with your therapist can minimize the soreness and can help them know what to do next. The benefits outweigh the discomfort by improving circulation and flexibility, relieving chronic pain patterns and help to remove energy blockages. There is overall healing for all types of physical trauma and it aids in the prevention of new injures. So, gentlemen, if you suffer from; back pain, headaches, poor sleep, fatigue, migraines, depression, anxiety, sore muscles, stuff joints, neck pain, high blood pressure, lower-back pain, constipation, or any injury that involves the muscles, joints, nerves, and fascia, help your body heal quicker and faster with a trained Massage Therapist to help you become a healthier and happier you! tarine, apples, pineapple! Also, when threading food, use two skewers per kabob. This will prevent the food on the skewers from turning when you are trying to flip them on the grill. We are going to marinate ours in a little bit of olive oil, vinegar, minced garlic and Italian Seasoning from the spice cupboard… YUM!!!!

GRILLED GARLIC BREAD … what goes better with Kabobs?

Believe it or not, you can also use your outdoor grill to toast bread. Heat some olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, then throw in a few cloves of minced garlic and sauté for 1-2 minutes. Brush both sides of whole wheat bread lightly with the garlic and oil. Then, place bread on the grill and watch closely to prevent it from burning. Flip it once to get grill marks on both sides.

HAPPY JUNE!

Hello, hello! Larry and Roger here. Happy June!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL YOU GREAT DADS, STEPDADS, GRANDDADS, FOSTERDADS, AND MOM-DADS! What a great thing to celebrate this month. Dads play such an important part in a family. We love that you take time to show your special man how special he is. He sure deserves it! We show our human love and support each and every day, but on FATHER’S DAY, we try really hard to WALK THAT EXTRA MILE for him. Last year, we did a hike in the mountains with him. This year we are going to have all the family together and have a spectacular BBQ and play some games in the back yard. We have bocce ball and croquette to set up, and a wading pool to put all of us feet into, in case the temperatures get warm. Very exciting! Roger has been meal planning. We think he has it dialed, but we are gonna do one last run thru to make sure that it is diabetic-friendly. Our menu is healthy. We have come up with some great ideas, and must give thanks to the American Diabetes Association www.diabetes.org for some great ideas and reminders. NUMBER ONE dish on our menu for FATHER’S DAY…..

KABOBS!

thenewsyneighbour.com

BUT I WANT MY BURGER!!! For those of us who prefer to stick to traditional barbecue food, the best options are burger patties made from 93% lean ground beef or lean ground turkey. You can also throw store-bought or homemade veggie burgers or black bean burgers on the grill as well. We LOVE to add black beans to our homemade burgers! It is one of our favourite ways to add protein. We also love to use a can of mushrooms and a carrot (all ground in the food processer until very small chunks) for a moist healthy filler… ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!! AND THEN… the icing on the cake/burger…. Cut some bun sized chunks off of a full head of Iceberg Lettuce and enjoy a CRISP HEALTHY Lettuce Bun Burger … Melt in your mouth! YUM YUM YUM!!!!!! WE ARE READY for our barbeque. We just need a good slice of sunshine to throw on top. We will enjoy our Father’s Day immensely, we hope you do also. Enjoy your family time. Get your steps in and keep on enjoying the sunshine. HAPPY JUNE, and Until Next month, Make your Footprints Count. Larry and Roger

Kabobs are a fun, easy meal that allows you to fit your lean meat, non-starchy vegetables and fruit all on one skewer. Always make sure you soak wooden skewers for at least 20 minutes before putting any food on them to prevent them from burning when on the grill. While the skewers are soaking, cut up your favourite veggies and/or meat into chunks. Then, thread them in alternating order onto the skewers. You can get creative by mixing and matching your veggies, meats, and fruit. Your options are endless: Pick from your favourite non-starchy veggies: bell peppers (any or all colours!), onion, mushrooms, summer squash, even avocado. Pick from your favourite meat or lean protein: tofu, chicken, lean beef, shrimp, or scallops. If you want to add some fruit, try: tomatoes, peaches, nec-

The last few years I have seen a great upsurge in the understanding that taking time to care for our personal well-being is vital.

Many people are grasping the concept and importance of Self-care. I am so grateful that this conversation is arising more and more – self-care happens when we choose to LOVE ourselves. Warts, scars, self-esteem, and all. Self-love is a vital component of our well-being. Self-care are the acts we choose to do for our wellbeing, because of Self-love. EVERYONE should be sure to include self-care daily! Why? Stress. We have a lot of it these days. There are many healthy and unhealthy ways we cope with stress. The best way to relieve chronic stress is to take some time to LOVE on yourself. Chronic emotional stress is now linked firmly with the six leading causes of death: cancer, coronary heart disease, accidental injuries, respiratory disorders, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. Self-care strategies offer healthy ways to stress release, and stress release translates to better health.

A few ideas of self-care to inspire you today to look after YOU.

1. Take time to rest when you feel tired. Yes, lay down on the couch and close your eyes. Close the office door, drop the anxiety, and rest your tired eyes for a few minutes. Nap while the kids are napping. Or just watch your breath quietly for a while. Yes. You. Can. 2. Be social. Or don't. How about instead of striving to meet someone else's expectations or trying to meet your own unrealistic ones, you genuinely ask yourself what YOU want? Oh, and then actually do that for yourself. 3. Go try something new. Or do something you have always wanted to do. Or do something you used to love when you were young. Go enjoy yourself on purpose, just for the sake of pleasure. Even when there is a to-do list as long as your forearm. 4. Ask for support. Somewhere in your life, there is somewhere that you could use a hand. Or maybe an ear. Don't stand alone. It is so much better when there is someone to share and support us, even if it is hard at first to ask for the support. Be it a friend to support you or a professional support to guide you, it takes the asking to get there. 5. Nurture your spirit. Breathe mindfully in nature, take a

LOCAL LANGDON ATHLETE SET TO COMPETE IN BMX WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Paige Moldenhauer isn’t like most 16-year-old girls. Sure, she goes to school, and worries about homework, getting good grades, and spending time with friends, but there’s something extra special about her. Every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Paige gears up, grabs her bike, and heads from Langdon over to the Okotoks BMX Club to practice for her upcoming trip: representing Canada at the UCI BMX World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Many of us who lived through the 80’s and 90’s have a cursory knowledge of BMXing simply through cultural osmosis – and having watched the movie Rad one too many times. Although it’s been a few years in between, the sport of BMX is still alive and well, and just as intense as fictional Rad rider Cru Jones made it out to be. Starting at the top of a steep incline, a typical BMX race involves riders speeding through a series of jumps, corners, and rhythm sections, handlebar-to-handlebar, to see who can make it across the finish line first. While chatting with Paige, I took a moment to ask her how she got involved in the sport. “My brother started a year

her on to find success down in South Carolina come July. “I think it’s an exciting experience for her,” Paige’s mother, Carole Moldenhauer, told me. “I didn’t know if we’d ever get the chance to go to Worlds, because it’s all over the place. It was really far away last year, in Colombia, but now it’s close enough for us to be able to travel there. It’ll be an experience; it’ll be fun!”

before me,” she explained. “So, I tried it on one of the club’s BMX Days, and I really liked it, so I joined too!” That was three years ago. In the interim, Paige has racked up a serious list of accomplishments that would make most athletes turn green with envy. “I was second in my age category when I started,” Paige told me, “and then during Provincials, I placed sixth, and then in Nationals, I got eighth, and now I’m going to worlds! It’s really exciting.” Paige’s brother continues to race competitively in BMX as well, and just narrowly missed qualifying for Worlds himself – meaning he has his sights set firmly on making it into the 2018 Championships.

Throughout it all, Paige has done well to focus on the joy of the sport and to ignore the pressures that competing on the world stage inevitably bring with them. With her eyes set firmly on Olympic-level competition in the coming years, Paige left me with some tried-and-true BMX wisdom when it comes to dealing with situations like the one she’s facing. “Huck it!” she exclaimed, and then shone some light on what this turn of phrase means: “If you’re faced with something, like a jump or whatever, and you’re like ‘I don’t know what to do,’ you just jump over it! You huck it!” Surely, somewhere, Cru Jones and the rest of the fictional crew from Rad are smiling at how the BMX torch is being picked up by the next generation of racers. We wish you the best of luck in Rock Hill, Paige! Have fun, give it your all, and most importantly, don’t forget to huck it!

Despite all of her monumental achievements, the thing that struck me most about Paige was how incredibly humble and down-to-earth she was when describing her goals and accomplishments to me. There was a sense of pride, sure, but there wasn’t a hint of arrogance or entitlement. It’s clear that Paige – despite her incredible ability and talent on the track – is just doing this because she enjoys it. “When you’re in a race, it’s an adrenaline rush. You never know how it’s going to go. It’s a lot of fun!” she enthused to me, when I asked her about the competitive element of BMX racing. “To me, competing has made BMX better. There’s more to aim for, and to work towards. It’s a great experience, too, to be able to travel and do everything.” Even with her formidable set of skills and her intrepid attitude, Paige is well aware of what she’s undertaking in stepping out onto the world stage. “I’m very nervous!” she admitted as we chatted about the upcoming Worlds competition. “I follow a bunch of these famous BMX racers on Instagram, and they’re getting all prepared and posting all about it. It’s a big, big thing, that everybody from all around the world is coming to, so it makes me nervous, because some people dedicate their whole lives to it, and are practicing and working towards it every single day. They don’t do it for fun, they just do it to be competitive, so it’s a little scary, for sure!” When Paige heads down to Rock Hill to compete during the World Championships from July 25-29, she’ll be racing in the 16 Novice class on her trusty Haro Blackout XL. “My coach (Chris Nakumura) has been helping me prepare,” Paige expressed with gratitude. “He’s been critiquing me on where I need to improve, whether it’s going through corners, or anything like that. He’s been a huge help.” Between her coach, her Crew team, and her family, Paige certainly has a dedicated support network around her, who will all cheering

PERIODONTAL DISEASE

Impacts Your Smile and Your Heart Whoever would have thought that Periodontal Disease and Heart and Stroke risk would be linked together? Smoking and Heart Disease – we can see the link – but gum health and the health of body organs and systems – what’s that all about?

Gum Disease and Your Body Expressions like ‘The Mouth is the Gateway to the Body’ and ‘The Mouth-Body Connection’ have been making their way through clinics, conferences and research labs for decades. But what do these expressions really mean when it comes down to the health of the mouth and impact on the body? Periodontists (specialists in treating tissue surrounding teeth) are well researched and prepped when it comes to understanding the unique connection between oral health and systemic health. Periodontal organizations such as the Canadian Academy of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology have long reported on the connection between gum and oral tissue health and the increased risk of cardiovascular and respiratory disease – noting that patients who present with periodontal disease have twice the risk of having a heart attack.

Why Does Periodontal Disease Impact the Health of The Body? From increasing the risk of heart disease to premature birth and low birth weight – there’s no getting around the fact that Periodontal Disease can do a real number on the body. But why – how can a disease that directly impacts oral tissues cause concern for our entire body? Bacteria, which is responsible for the destruction and inflammation of oral tissues, isn’t isolated to the mouth – but enters the blood stream and travels around the body – causing further inflammation and contributing to blood clots and fatty deposits in arteries. The more plaque build-up on teeth the greater amount of bacteria present and the greater the inflammation of gum and bone. If the inflammation is not controlled, gum and bone

Rolly Ashdown, Councillor Division 4 Rocky View County email: rashdown@rockyview.ca 403-999-2722 Cell, 403-936-0777 Res

Hello Langdon! It's tax time again and you should have received your tax bill by now. There are a few changes on it but nothing really earth-shattering. Council sets the tax rate in the early spring every year, depending on the budget that is approved to run the County for the year. The rate is called a mill rate and it is 1/1000 of the value of the property, for example if your house is worth $500,000 and the mill rate is 1, then the taxes would be $500 for the year. Mill Rates in the Province for places like Langdon are typically in the 5 to 10 range; ours is very low in comparison, right now in the 2.5 range. In Rocky View County, mostly due to our location and somewhat due to good planning and Infrastructure Investment, we have a substantial Commercial Tax Base. That is important because Commercial entities pay 3 times the tax rate of residents; this is what makes it possible for our favourable mill rate. It costs in the neighbourhood of $150 million to run Rocky View County every year, spending is determined by a budget that is approved every year by Council. Unlike other forms of Government, the County cannot run a deficit or spend more that the budgeted amount. Budgets can be adjusted during the year with approval but Administration cannot just spend more without prior approval. The amount raised by Residential Taxes is about $40 million, Commercial also brings in about $40 million, our Residential to Commercial ratio,

money wise is 50/50 right now, a very healthy split. The balance of the money comes in from user fees (Development Permits, Building Permits, Levies etc.) and grants from the Province and the Feds. It is a goal to recover expenses for services wherever possible, it is also important to know that the County is not a Business and doesn't profit from fees charged. We have a rec Levy as well on the tax bill, which is .1 of a mill rate or $1 for each $10,000 in value of your property, again using the example of a $500,000 home the amount would be $50. This is placed in a fund to be used exclusively in Langdon for Recreation purposes and is spent through applications that go to Council for approval from a recommendation of the Recreation Department. This Levy used to raise around $80 thousand and the mill rate changed annually, I am trying to encourage it to become a fixed rate of .1

so that as Langdon grows, so does the fund. Recreation is important and lacking in our growing community. The other amount that is collected every year is the Education Tax. This is a flow through to the Provincial Government and the only part the County has to do with it is collect and then pay to the Province. It amounts to about half of your tax bill and goes to the Provincial funds to keep the Schools running and educate the kids. Hope that clarifies tax rates a bit. I often get asked, "Where do my taxes go?" That requires quite a longer explanation. Maybe I'll cover some of that next month. Have a nice summer!

A fine is a tax for doing wrong. A tax is a fine for doing well.

has a meaty texture. Botanically, we’re classified as a berry – we contain lots of small, soft, edible seeds, but watch out, they taste bitter thanks to all the nicotinoid alkaloids they contain, unsurprising given the fact that tobacco is a close relative (one we prefer not to invite to parties when we can avoid it). Before you smokers cry Eureka, and rush out to buy some eggplants in an attempt to kick the nasty habit, be forewarned: while we are richer in nicotine than any other edible plant, you’d have to wolf down about 20 lbs (9 kg) of eggplant to ingest the same amount of nicotine found in a single cigarette!

The Elks provide specialty catering & bartending services for 50 to 500 persons. We cater weddings, memorials, golf tournaments, anniversaries or any occasion where you have a large group feed!

HISTORY

We got our start in life in ancient India. We’ve been cultivated in southern and eastern Asia since prehistory, but didn’t pop up in the Western world until around 1500. The first known written record of us is found in a Chinese agricultural essay composed in 544 BC. Given the fact there are plenty of Arabic and North African names for us, but we don’t show up in ancient Greek or Roman literature, suggests we were introduced into the Mediterranean area by Arabs in the early Middle Ages. The name eggplant is used in North America, Australia, and New Zealand, and refers to some of my 18th century relatives, which were light yellow or white and resembled goose or hen’s eggs. Meanwhile in the French-speaking world, aubergine also refers to the purple color that resembles our royal shade (or perhaps I should say nightshade). T oday, 85% of the world’s eggplants are produced by five countries – China, India, Egypt, Turkey, and Indonesia. In North America, Georgia ranks as the largest producer. We’re used in dishes from

Our specialty is BBQ beef on a bun, with all the fixin’s, but we can create almost any menu your heart desires. Our rates are compeve and all the funds raised stay in the County of Wheatland and Rockyview communies. Last year the Elks donated over $31,000 to local communies and charies.

HEALTH

We eggplants boast a number of phytonutrients, many of which have antioxidant properties. One of my phytonutrients (this one is found mainly in my skin), nasunin, is a potent antioxidant and free radical scavenger that has been shown to protect cell membranes from damage. In animal studies, nasunin has been found to protect the lipids (fats) in brain cell membranes. Cell membranes are almost entirely composed of lipids and are responsible for protecting cells from free radicals, letting nutrients in and wastes out. Nasunin is also, it turns out, an effective iron chelator (no, that does not mean “someone who doesn’t play fair while ironing”). Although iron is an essential nutrient and is necessary for oxygen transport, normal immune function and collagen synthesis, too much iron, like too much chocolate, or too much of, well, anything, is not a good thing. Excess iron increases free radical production, and is associated with an increased risk of heart disease and cancer. Menstruating women, who lose iron every month in their menstrual flow, are unlikely to be at risk, but in postmenopausal women and men generally, iron, which is not easily excreted, can accumulate. By chelating iron, nasunin lessens free radical formation with numerous beneficial results, ranging from protecting blood cholesterol from peroxidation, to preventing cellular damage that can cause cancer, to lessening free radical damage in joints, a primary factor in rheumatoid arthritis.

We also contain significant amounts of phenolic compounds that also serve as antioxidants, including chlorogenic acid, one of the most potent free radical scavengers found in plant tissues. Benefits attributed to chlorogenic acid include antimutagenic (anti-cancer), antimicrobial, anti-LDL (bad cholesterol) and antiviral properties. In a recent study, when laboratory animals with high cholesterol were given eggplant to consume, their blood cholesterol, the cholesterol in their artery walls, and the cholesterol in their aortas was significantly reduced, while the walls of their blood vessels relaxed, improving blood flow. Ah, then there’s the pleasure of actually eating me. Different cultures take different tacks – generally, however we’re prepared, when cooked we become tender and develop rich, complex flavours. In the old days, many eggplant recipes would call for us to be salted, rinsed and drained once sliced, to soften us and remove the bitter taste many associate with us. Today, many modern eggplant varieties – including the proudly purple fruit most of you are familiar with – don’t require this treatment. In France and Italy we’re often served stewed. We can also be battered and deep-fried, roasted until our skin is charred, grilled, mashed, stuffed with meat, rice, or other fillings – the list goes on. Bottom line: we’re versatile, delicious, slightly exotic, and fun to prepare. But don’t take my word for it – try these recipes and see what you think! Good eating, Iggy Eggplant

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CANADA! It’s 150 years since Canada was born as a country. In our communities in our constituency, we are celebrating with barbecues, parades, and parties in our communities. We have great volunteers organizing these celebrations in our communities; please help us to recognize them. I will be awarding special Canada 150 Certificates and Medals to Bow River constituents who have made a remarkable contribution to our communities. Do you know people who have: • Gone above and beyond? • Been outstanding contributors to the Bow River Riding? • Been tireless volunteers for various causes or organizations within our many communities, especially for Canada 150 events? I know that there are many of these people in our Riding, who have made an incredible difference in our communities. I want to hear who these people are. Please call my office to nominate somebody for this initiative. It’s important that we recognize residents of the Bow River Riding for their incredible contributions to our communities. I know we are all very excited and enthusiastic about celebrating the 150th year of our great nation, and I am inviting you to celebrate by nominating somebody who gives a part of themselves back to their community. I have also made an appeal to each and every one of you to come and see your Parliament in this 150th year of Confederation. The Centre Block will be closed for up to 15 years beginning in the summer of next year, so the best time to see your buildings is right now. I recognize the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Interim Leader of the Official Opposition and of the Conservative Party. She announced this week that she would be leaving politics altogether to move on to other projects. After 13 years as M.P., Minister of the Crown, and now Leader of the Official Opposition, she has conducted herself with dignity, grace, and stature. I hope you will join me in recognizing her contribution to Canada. Please contact one of my offices with any questions or comments.

REMEMBER SLOW FOOD?

I never had a telephone in my room. The only phone in the house was in the living room and it was on a party line. Before you could dial, you had to listen and make sure some people you didn't know weren't already using the line.

Someone asked the other day, “What was your favourite fast food when you were growing up?”

All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers--my brother delivered a newspaper, six days a week. It cost 7 cents a paper, of which he got to keep 2 cents. He had to get up at 6AM every morning. On Saturday, he had to collect the 42 cents from his customers. His favourite customers were the ones who gave him 50 cents and told him to keep the change. His least favourite customers were the ones who seemed to never be home on collection day.

“We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,” I informed him. “All the food was slow.” “C'mon, seriously. Where did you eat?” “It was a place called 'at Home,’” I explained. “Mom cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.” By this time, the kid was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it: Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levi’s, never set foot on a golf course, never traveled out of the country or had a credit card. In their later years, they had something called a revolving charge card. The card was good only at Sears Roebuck. Or maybe it was Sears & Roebuck. Either way, there is no Roebuck anymore.

Pizzas were not delivered to our home, but milk was.

Movie stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the movies. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or most anything offensive. If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing. Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

My parents never drove me to soccer practice. This was mostly because we had never heard of soccer. I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed (slow), and we didn't have a television in our house until I was 11. It was, of course, black and white, and the station went off the air at midnight, after playing the national anthem and a poem about God; it came back on the air at about 6 a.m. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people. I was 19 before I tasted my first pizza, it was called 'pizza pie.' When I bit into it, I burned the roof of my mouth and the cheese slid off, swung down, plastered itself against my chin and burned that, too. It's still the best pizza I ever had. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Keep your pet protected this summer. Awareness and prevention is key. Book an appointment with your veterinarian before you hit the trails.

Young horses, just like young humans, have a lot of changes happening in their mouths as they are maturing. Over the first 5 years of life these horses are shedding their baby teeth and growing in new adult teeth. If that weren’t enough, these teeth grow in at different times and some would say in the wrong order! Young horses should be checked annually to ensure any retained deciduous caps (baby teeth) are addressed to allow the permanent adult teeth to come in properly. The first dental in a young horse also provides the opportunity to remove their ‘wolf teeth’ before they have the opportunity to cause an issue when a bit is placed in the mouth during training.

Older horses are at a higher risk for having dental issues. Over time, horses will actually ‘run out of tooth’, meaning they do not have any more tooth left below the gum line to North of Trans Canada Hwy on erupt. As a result, older horses are more likeRR 254, 2 km West of Strathmore. ly to have loose or missing teeth, making it difficult to chew. Loose teeth are painful and may require extraction. They are also a hot spot for periodontal disease to develop. Missing teeth create an unbalanced mouth and means the opposing teeth need to be corrected to ensure the horse can still carry out a normal chewing cycle.

403.901.1800 clinic emergency info@animalcarecentre.ca animalcarecentre.ca

Q: How often should I have my horse's teeth floated?

A: The truth is - that depends on your horse. The simple answer is that you should have your horse’s teeth checked by your veterinarian at least annually to determine if a floating is necessary. These are the reasons why:

In general, younger and older horses may need to have their teeth floated more frequently as their mouths are undergoing significant changes. Middle aged horses may not need to have a float performed as often, but should be checked annually to ensure any dental issues are not missed. An annual checkup by your veterinarian will help keep your horse’s teeth in the best health, no matter what the age. Ideally, dental care in horses should be PREVENTATIVE; however, if your horse is having issues with dropping feed, weight loss, poor digestion, or poor performance, you should contact your regular veterinarian for a dental examination right away! Dr. Becky Bezugley, DVM

Unlike humans, horses’ teeth grow continually throughout their life. The teeth are ground down as they grow by the horse’s normal chewing cycle. This adaptation allows them to break down and digest forages like grass and hay. It also means their teeth are constantly changing. Just because your horse’s teeth were normal this year does not mean they will be in the same state next year. Over time the horse may develop sharp points, tall or short teeth, spaces between the teeth, fractures, or loose teeth that cause pain and need to be addressed.

PIZZA

E V E N T S & P R O G R A M S & M O R E

HAVE YOU EVER TRIED MAKING YOUR OWN PIZZA DOUGH? In my mind, it is like making bread: it’s a disaster. I have tried making bread and buns in the past, but, for some reason it never seems to rise properly for me, or if it seems that it did rise (the first time), once I get it into the pan and bake, it does not rise properly the second time and I end up with a flat loaf of bread instead of the big beautiful golden loaf of warm delight. Now, I may have given up too soon, as after my second attempt at bread making I decided this just was not for me. Then I found this recipe for making my own pizza dough and thought, I am not a quitter and I am going to give this a try. It is the same process as making bread, but in the article, it said “You’ll never settle for a takeout pie again, not when the alternatives are so delicious and easy” so I thought maybe I can do this! With a little trepidation, I started. The directions sounded easy enough; they call this the “classic” recipe; it only takes 20 minutes, then you’re ready to top it.

Classic Pizza Dough

3 cups all purpose flour, divided 1 pkg. (1.4 oz.) rapid-rise yeast 1 tsp salt 1 cup warm water 2 tbsp oil Combine 2 cups flour, yeast, and salt. Add water and oil; mix in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Knead on lightly floured surface until dough is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Cover; let rest on floured surface 10 minutes. Divide in half. Freeze one half for future use.

This will make two 12” pizzas. Much to my surprise, my dough actually looked puffy, smooth, glossy and luscious! Think of the possibilities! My imagination started to run wild. I started going through my cupboard and refrigerator, looking for toppings to make my very own exquisite creation. Just think about the hundred different combinations of toppings you could create! But then I thought what about the pizza sauce? In my mind, the dough is the foundation of any good pizza but the sauce is equally important (they never put enough) I want to be able to taste the herbs and spices of a slightly pungent and slightly sweet pizza sauce. Now that I had had such success making my first pizza dough, the next apparent step was to also make an incredibly luscious sauce. I found this pizza sauce on allrecipes.com and to me it sounded like just what I was looking for even the name was appealing; it has lots of herbs and spices just the way I like it, and even anchovies (which I love):

Exquisite Pizza Sauce

1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste 6 fluid ounces’ warm water (110°F/45°C) 3 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese 1 teaspoon minced garlic 2 tablespoons honey 1 teaspoon anchovy paste (optional) 3/4 teaspoon onion powder 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon dried marjoram 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/8 teaspoon dried red pepper flakes In a small bowl, combine tomato paste, water, Parmesan cheese, garlic, honey, anchovy paste, onion powder, oregano, marjoram, basil, ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes and salt; mix together, breaking up any clumps of cheese. Sauce should sit for 30 minutes to blend flavours; spread over pizza dough and prepare pizza as desired. Now that I had the perfect pizza dough and sauce, my mind moved on to toppings; this is truly where you can let your imagination run wild. The meat alone could de-rail you even before you consider all of the other combinations. But, that is the complete and utter joy of the freedom of creating you own special “signature” pizza. Just think about it. Why stop at pepperoni, ham, ground beef or bacon? What about capicola, prosciutto, chicken breast, corned beef, pancetta, chorizo, mortadella, salami, roast beef? I could go on and on; just take a visit to your local deli and try something you have never tasted before. Live a little! Don’t even get me started on the cheese! I could probably fill two whole pages on different types of cheeses. You have come this far, I urge you to visit your local deli and try something new, you may surprise yourself. Experiment, expand your horizons, have a little fun! After all, isn’t life the journey not the destination?

Food is the one factor you at least have some control over. Just go for it! Kathryn Hartwell

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil over high heat until shimmering. Working in batches and being sure not to crowd the pan, add zucchini, season with salt, and cook, turning, until just tender and browned in spots, about 4 minutes per batch. Add more oil as needed to prevent pan from drying out, and adjust heat as needed throughout to maintain a very hot, but not heavily smoking, pan. Transfer each batch to a baking sheet and spread in an even layer to cool, then transfer cooled slices to a second baking sheet or plate. Repeat with remaining zucchini, squash, and eggplant until all vegetables are lightly browned. 2. Place lasagna noodles in a 9- by 13-inch casserole dish and cover with hot water. Let noodles soak while you prepare the white sauce, agitating them every few minutes to prevent sticking, about 20 minutes total. 3. Heat butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat until melted. Add flour and increase heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring butter and flour with a whisk until pale golden blond, about 1 minute. Whisking constantly, slowly drizzle in milk. Continue to cook, whisking frequently, until mixture comes to a boil and thickens. Remove from heat and add Parmigiano-Reggiano. Whisk until smooth. Season to taste with salt. Set aside. 4. Season crushed tomatoes to taste with salt. 5. Preheat oven to 375°F and adjust rack to center position. Transfer noodles to a clean kitchen towel or layer with paper towels to dry them. Dry the casserole dish carefully and brush with olive oil. Spread a thin layer of crushed tomatoes on the bottom of the baking dish. Layer with 3 lasagna noodles. Top with 1/4 of eggplant, zucchini, and squash, 1/5 of crushed tomatoes, and 1/5 of white sauce. Repeat layers three more times. Place the final lasagna noodles on top and spread with remaining crushed tomatoes and white sauce. Scatter mozzarella evenly over surface and add basil leaves. Drizzle lightly with olive oil. 6. Cover dish tightly with aluminum foil and place in oven. Bake for 30 minutes, uncover, and continue baking until lightly browned on top. Remove from oven, let rest 10 minutes, slice, and serve. www.seriouseats.com

Are Men & Women REALLY from Different Planets? “Just as a man is fulfilled through working out the intricate details of solving a problem, a woman is fulfilled through talking about the details of her problems.” ― John N. Gray, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus: A Practical Guide for Improving Communication and Getting What You Want in Your Relationships As a mother of four now-grown children, I am blessed with having experienced raising both boys (3) and a girl. Over the years I often noted the boundless energy of my sons, plus their seemingly compulsive need to touch, play with and move pretty much anything in their line of sight! A case in point, they once had to watch the same TV channel for over two weeks until the remote control for the cable box was discovered on the floor behind the toilet. How did it get there? Well, when it was found, my youngest son said, “Oh yeah! I forgot that I put it there when I took the remote to the bathroom with me.” My daughter, although she was a bit of a Tomboy, could sit still for hours and preferred to have things tidy and in their place. She enjoyed doing crafts, colouring, building with Lego or taking a leisurely walk with her dad or me while her brothers preferred to run… in zig zags and circles! Perhaps as a result of my parenting experience, I developed an interest in understanding the differences between men and women. While many of us know that men are generally hard-wired to be providers and protectors, and women tend to be natural care-givers and nurturers, there are hundreds of other differences between the genders including how they communicate, resolve problems, address conflict, set priorities, interpret situations, manage pain and much more. Of course, these are generalities and there are exceptions. That said, it is commonly accepted that men and women tend to differ physically, mentally and socially, however, what is not as well known is that many of these differences are rooted at a biological level in our brains. For example, a Stanford University study found that nine areas of a woman’s brain lit

up across both sides of their brain when shown an emotional image while in men, two areas lit up and on the same side of the brain. The result is increased ‘emotional responses’ in women. In a related series of studies, it was determined that men and women express empathy different. While women respond with emotional empathy that has them feeling what the other person is feeling, men generally respond using cognitive empathy, which helps to distance themselves from the other person’s emotions and allows their brain to focus on analyzing the situation and seek out solutions. This explains why women need an emotional connection when they share their problems - they are not looking for a solution, they want to be heard. Men on the other hand, are more analytical and tend to share a problem only when they need a solution, they are not interested in emotional empathy. In fact, multiple studies using MRIs determined that men are wired to avoid contact with other people when they are distressed and it quite literally is difficult for them to communicate their feelings. There are many differences in communication as well. A few examples of this are that men communicate to maintain independence and establish status… women communicate to establish or maintain intimacy. Men are precise, direct and often lack descriptive details… women are discussion-oriented, detailed and often apologetic. Men see communication as a way to exchange information… women view it as a way to build rapport, explore emotions, and offer support. Men nod when they are in agreeance… women nod to show they are listening (even if they don’t agree!). As human beings, we have a tendency to view the world from our own perspective, which makes it easy to see how misunderstandings can occur between the genders. It’s important to remember that there are scientifically proven differences and, in the wise words of Stephen Covey, many of these misunderstandings may be avoided when we “seek first to understand and then to be understood.” Every month at Women Talk in Strathmore, women experience what they are naturally wired to want in their lives: support, sharing of experiences, emotional empathy, relationship building, mutual understanding, belonging to a community and so much more. Join us on the last Thursday of each month and hear the extraordinary stories of two Talkers and enjoy an inspirational message, lots of laughter and some great conversation. THE POUTY PUPPY The absolute worst thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I mean, nothing else in the world could be as bad as what I experienced. This story will shock and appall you. Maybe don’t call the SPCA just yet, but maybe save their number on your phone for future use. A stranger picked me up. I KNOW. Let me paint you a little picture of this horror. I was minding my own business, going for a walk with Mom. We were doing our regular stroll around the lake, where I was happily peeing on every slightly-tall piece of grass and searching for rabbit poop to eat, when Mom got a text and veered offroad. I mean, we were walking on a street – not even a sidewalk. There was nothing to pee on! THEN, and this is where the story starts getting bad. Mom put me in a vehicle. Just some random vehicle I didn’t know, and then ran into a building. SHE LEFT ME ALONE IN A CAR. It felt like I was in there for hours, but mom rolled her eyes and said it was for 30 seconds. Still. When she came out of the building, she had a stranger with her. A man.

GOURMET KETTLECORN

I was released from my metal prison and was thrusted into what I can only describe as hell on Earth. This man kept saying how excited he was “to meet the Black Ninja” and how he’s “my biggest fan” – I’M my biggest fan, thank you very much. And Grandpa. But definitely not this guy. I kept showing him my teeth to let him know he’s NOT my number one fan, but he just kept laughing and coming toward me. He was petting me, and laying on the dirty cement with me. I hated every second of it. He kept trying to hide behind mom’s legs but she kept pulling me back out to interact with this horrid stranger. And then it happened. The guy picked me up. Naturally, I bit him. I was very unhappy with all this excitement. I know how amazing I am, I don’t need a stranger saying it to me. But he laughed at my ferocious bite and patted me on the head. Then he posed with Mom for a photo. THEY POSED FOR A PHOTO WHILE I WAS SO ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE!!!!! Ok, NOW you can call the SPCA. Taking photos without my permission or my desire calls for jail time. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced in my entire life – and I’ve lived through thunderstorms. And kids!

Ah, Springtime.

Birds are singing, bees are buzzing, flowers are blooming. Strathmore smells of ode de` manure and celebrities are spewing advice to multitudes of graduates; and not all of it is crap. Graduation season is upon us. Famous actors, athletes and politicians are donning mortarboards and robes and stepping up to the podium to pontificate a plethora of encouraging advice. And as I am not a famous actor, athlete, nor politician I shall simple regurgitate some of the best quotes from previous commencement addresses for you enjoyment, perhaps even for your encouragement, because let’s face it – we could all use some free advice now and again. I shall start with one of my favourites. In 2009, Ellen DeGeneres offered the graduates of Tulane University this bit of direction: The definition of success changes. Success is to live your life with integrity and not give in to peer pressure to be something you’re not. Follow your passion. Stay true to yourself. Never follow someone else’s path; unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path, then by all means, you should follow that. Will Ferrell is really not who I would picture as someone to approach when needing serious life advice but his address to the graduating class of the University of Southern California this year especially rang true to me.

Seriously, this advice should be given, not to graduates, but to the freshman class. Imagine how the world would change if our definition of personal success was based on helping others and contributing to each other instead of on corporate titles and salaries. And finally, my all-time, hands down, numero uno, favourite piece of advice for graduates comes from someone who’s fame is all the more sweeter for her failures. An author that received rejection letters from 12 different publishing companies before finally having her manuscript accepted. "It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all — in which case, you fail by default." These words of advice were spoken to the Harvard University Graduating Class – by J.K. Rolling. An author whose words and imagination brought to life one of modern day’s literary heroes, Harry Potter – The Boy Who Lived. Now if I did happen to one day be famous enough to be asked to deliver the commencement address to a group of graduates, I might just borrow words from Ms. Rolling because as Dumbledore so eloquently told young Potter “It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities." You are a consequence of your choices in life. It doesn’t matter if you hold a degree from Harvard or a broom at McDonalds. It doesn’t matter if you make minimum wage or six figures. It doesn’t matter if you give the commencement speech or listen to it. It doesn’t matter how capable or talented you are, it’s what you do that makes a difference in the world. We are who we choose to become. Go forth and choose to be kind, compassionate and true to yourself.

Choose to be a success however you define it in this moment of your life. Be like Harry – Be a Person Who Lived.

The definition of success changes. Success itsto live your life with integrity and not give in to peer pressure to be something you’re not. Follow your passion. Stay true to yourself. Never follow someone else’s path; unless you’re in the woods and you’re lost and you see a path, then by all means, you should follow that.

8 Tips for Getting Your Home Ready for Summer It's been a long winter, but spring is finally here! Now is the time to start working on all those projects that you've been putting off until warm weather. Listed here are some tips to get your home ready for summer. 1. Spruce Up the Flower Beds Begin by pulling out all the grass and weeds that have accumulated throughout the winter. When doing so, take note of any perennials coming back up from last year. Do you have any plants that need to be moved or spread out to allow for the new growing season? After re-arranging the existing foliage, consider placing annuals in any empty spaces to add a look of fullness and for splashes of color. Loosen soil and add mulch where needed. 2. Give Your A/C Some TLC Before the really hot weather moves in, you will want to give your air conditioner a thorough cleaning. First, turn off the unit and

then use your garden hose to thoroughly spray any dirt and debris out of the condenser coils. Because ants are drawn to electrical circuits, it is a good idea to spray a good insect repellent/ killer around the base once it has been reassembled. Doing so will keep the annoying insects from building nests inside the unit, which can damage it. Lastly, put in a new A/C filter and be sure to replace it each month. 3. Freshen Lawn Furniture Wash all removable cushions and allow them to air dry. For any fabric that can't be unattached or placed in the washing machine, use a damp rag or brush, dish detergent, and water to scrub clean. Mildew can be removed from plastic furniture with a mixture of a gallon of water to a half a cup of bleach. Leave furniture out to dry in the sun. 4. De-Gunk Birdbaths Clear out all leaves, sticks and other debris from all birdbaths. Dump out the old water and clean with equal parts water and white vinegar. Rinse thoroughly and refill with fresh water. Now all that's left is watching the birds enjoy a nice bath and a refreshing drink. 5. Inspect Your Roof Since it is less likely to rain in the summer than any other season,

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

now is the perfect time to examine your roof for spring or winter weather damage. To begin, either climb on top of the house or use a pair of binoculars to take a good look at your roof. Look for any cracked, curling or missing shingles. Also, check for any missing or damaged metal flashings around skylights, pipes or the chimney and replace as needed. 6. Clear Out All Gutters Winter weather and spring storms can leave your gutters pretty yucky. Grab a ladder and a handheld shovel or gutter scoop to remove all leaves and debris. Use the garden hose to spray out the gutters and downspouts, checking for any cracks or leaks as you go. Caulk any joints that need to be repaired with sealant.Be sure to caulk from the inside. If the hole is very large, you may need to use a (gutter) patching kit, which can be found at any local hardware store. 7. Scour Your Grill Turn on your grill and let it heat up for around 10 minutes. Doing so will make scraping off the burnt on gunk left from last year much easier. If you own a gas grill, be sure to disconnect the fuel line first. Once cooled, remove burners, grates, and the drip tray and wash with warm, soapy water. Don't forget to clean the grill's exterior as well. 8. Clean the Exterior of Home If available, use a power washer to spray down the siding and shingles on your home. Wash the inside and outside of all windows. Repair or replace any broken or missing pieces of siding. Repaint shingles if necessary. Don't forget to clean off the garage door and to remove any dead tree limbs away from the house. By tackling these jobs now, when the hottest months of the year get here your home will be ready. Then while all the neighbors are still trying to catch up, you can be kicked back, drinking lemonade, and relaxing in the shade. Enjoy your summer!

3 Ways to Destroy Weeds Without the Use of Pesticides

(403)

934-7903

/Nancy Stairs Team

Working for you 24/7

Be warned, vinegar will not completely destroy the roots of mature weeds. However, if the weed is young and the root system is weak, vinegar will destroy both the plant and the root system. Vinegar is especially useful for killing weeds in hard to reach cracks and crevices. To make your vinegar concoction even more potent, add a few drops of dishwasher liquid to it before it is applied.

Pesticides are an effective method for killing off weeds. It is estimated that up to 80% of worldwide crops would be lost if it weren't for the protective measure of pesticides. There are some instances where you, at home, may not have pesticides available. If you find your garden and yard being overrun with weeds, but don't have pesticides at your disposal or prefer not to use them, you have options. There are plenty of quick and easy DIY solutions for keeping weeds at bay without the use of pesticides.

Valuable Vinegar

Would you believe that the household vinegar that you have in your kitchen is an effective and potent weed killer? Both white vinegar and apple cider vinegar are great for killing weeds. Simply pour about a cup of vinegar on the weeds that you wish to kill and revisit the area in a few hours to pull out the dead weeds.

Bring it to a Boil

The water that gives plants life can also destroy it just as easily. Boiling water is one of the easiest, most affordable and effective methods of destroying weeds. Simply heat water in a pot or kettle until it has started to boil and then pour the boiling hot water on the weeds. The scorching water literally cooks the plant where it lies, destroying any chance it has for regrowth. Boiling water is so effective at killing vegetation that it will destroy the root system of not only the weeds but plants near the weeds. Boiling water is best used in areas that need to completely cleared out or in places, like cracks in the sidewalk or your driveway, where there isn't much danger of harming nearby plants.

Mulch Much?

Mulch can control the growth of weeds that are already present, but mulch is most effective on freshly tilled soil in your garden or flowerbeds. Lay about a 3-5 inch spread of mulch on the soil either covering the weeds or on freshly tilled soil. The mulch prevents weeds from getting the sunlight and water that they so desperately need to grow, ensuring that your garden stays free of weeds for months. Give these DIY weed killing pointers a try! You will be amazed at just how effective they are at killing of persistent, troubling weeds.

to see what amazing young men they have become. One thing I notice is that they play down their issues, because it is assumed that whatever may be on their mind, my issues are worse. This misunderstanding of the nature of men inherently begins a cycle of silence that surrounds men as they try to work through their own problems. But gentlemen, it is time to talk about them.

Now is the time to book your land development and septic installation projects for spring! Mention THIS AD for 20% OFF

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you were able to solve the worlds problem by leaping a building with a single bound, or sweep your partner off their feet by spinning a web any size? Why is talking about men’s issues often interpreted as misogyny or weakness? It is time to change the discussion. Have you ever been encouraged to fight? Or were you encouraged to talk it out? We are raised in a very violent world, and aggression for men is sometimes considered a hot commodity, whether that is during a hockey game, fighting to save our country, or in business. The desire to win at any cost is rewarded by society, and this is hard to unlearn. Men are as prone to abuse as women, but it is different. They are the abusers and the abused, and are consistently more impacted by crimes that are violent.

I am thrilled to be part of the Newsy Neighbour family. While I do not have the honour of representing Strathmore residents, you are ably served by my Wildrose colleague Derek Fildebrandt. Please contact his office at: 403-934-4400 or Strathmore.brooks@assembly.ab.ca.

Hello Newsy Neighbour readers! UNITY UPDATE: As you know, my Party, the Wildrose, and the PCs have reached an agreement in principle to form a new Conservative party to take on the disastrous NDP Government in the next election. The Wildrose is a grassroots organization. You are in charge. 75% of Wildrose members MUST approve this for it to happen. If you ARE a member, you MUST register to vote at the July 22 Special General Meeting at www. wildrose.ca/sgm. If you cannot attend in person, there will be ways for you to vote. If you are NOT a member and want to have a say, you MUST join the Wildrose Party BEFORE July 8 and then register for the SGM. You can do that at www. wildrose.ca or call your local Constituency Association. Please help shape the future of this province. As always, it is a privilege to write to you and as this is the Men’s Issue, I want to write about the men that I love, that I respect, who are my friends and who I trust. Fortunately for me, I am surrounded by men that bear all of these qualities in some weird and wonderful formula, and I am truly the luckiest woman alive because of the influence, compassion and integrity of the very special men in my life. As the Shadow Minister for Status Of Women, it is interesting and profoundly humbling to research men and the various issues they face. I have two sons, and I can honestly say that raising them has been the biggest joy of my life, and I am honoured

Let’s talk about mental illness. I realize this is a difficult discussion. I also realize that I am not a therapist, but I simply comment on the things I see and read, so take these impressions and interpretations with a dash of good humour. The question you need to ask yourself is, are you pretending nothing is wrong? Talking about this stuff is very hard and probably why in some countries suicide is the biggest killer of young men. Young men and boys are subjected to media and a world that views them as uninspired. Well, I can tell you that gender does matter, and that you young men out there completely inspire me and keep working hard every day so you will live complete and full lives in a province we all love so much. The incredible men that I have the pleasure of having in my life have taught me so much about emotion, about work ethic, about adapting, about education, and about pride. These are the things I have learned from these important men and boys. Why is there so much hostility when we speak about men’s issues? I think it is time to speak out with kindness and let’s have a conversation about what makes you tick! I recently attended a meeting where men and women were working through their 12 steps of addiction. As an observer, I was completely blown away by the articulate, thoughtful, and insightful discussion that went on about this horrible disease of the mind - suicide on a schedule. The men who spoke told their stories with passion, and they were not afraid to show the deep fears they have about relapsing into drugs and alcohol, or what they have lost as a result of their addictions. It was overwhelming and humbling to listen to these stories. You are complex, insightful and diverse beings. You express your humanity very differently than women and that is something that enriches society. When we talk of common experiences, it is liberating no matter what your gender. It increases our understanding of each other, and hopefully increases our respect for one another. One thing I tell my husband and my sons everyday is, “You are not alone,” and I think I do this for myself selfishly as much as for them. But it is helpful and fulfilling, and it gets me an extra hug and kiss on the cheek from my sons who tower above me now. Thank you for allowing me to attempt to write about this. As always, we love to hear from you. Leela Sharon Aheer, MLA The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

THE BRICK A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighbourhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag's side door! He slammed on the brakes and backed the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car shouting, “What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That's a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?” The young boy was apologetic. “Please, mister...please, I'm sorry but I didn't know what else to do,” He pleaded. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop...” With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. “It's my brother,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.”

watched the boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message:

“Don't go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention.” Congratulations Debbie Enslen on Achieving Top Producer Status Amongst All CIR Realty REALTORS®!

Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me.” Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out a linen handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be okay. “Thank you,” the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply

TUTORIAL

THE ULTIMATE COMFORT FOOD –

MUSHROOM STROGANOFF

2 tsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp Italian Seasoning 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 ½ cups macaroni 4 cups mixed mushrooms, chopped 4 cups low-sodium beef or vegetable stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce, or vegetarian alternative 1 ½ cups sour cream small bunch parsley, roughly chopped

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and soften the onion for about 5 - 10 mins. Add the garlic, paprika and Italian Seasoning, then cook for a few minutes more.

Add mushrooms and cook on a high heat, stirring often, for about 10 mins. Pour in the stock and Worcestershire sauce. Add 1 ½ cups of macaroni and cook until the noodles are tender and the sauce thickens, then turn off the heat and stir in the sour cream and most of the parsley. Make sure the pan is not on the heat or the sauce may split.

Shur-Lock Self Storage 13 Bayside Place. Strathmore AB, T1P 1C8

There are all sorts of different ways to make this recipe. Originally, I was going to make the mushroom sauce and pour it over egg noodles, but my cupboard was bare, so I had to use the macaroni. I find pasta has way more flavour when you add it to your sauce to cook instead of pouring the sauce over at the end (just a personal preference). Also, you could pour this mushroom sauce over rice or Quinoa. This is a very versatile sauce and, thinking about it, you could also leave out the pasta and use it over pork or chicken. Just use your imagination.

RISE TO THE TOP: TAKE TIME TO LISTEN You never know how far an idea might go until you take time to genuinely listen to others. Therefore, authentic leaders create dialogues where others know their input and ideas are seriously considered. Mindful listening establishes and grows trust. In fact, such conversations often bring about disruption and change. Currently, the demand for change is creating chaos globally. Unfortunately, many leaders’ words and promises are significantly different from what they are delivering. Ultimately, consistency is key to establishing genuine engagement.

LISTEN AND ENGAGE

Listening to your audience allows new ideas to emerge. Furthermore, leaders who possess the strength and courage to introduce these new concepts facilitate innovation. Without these individuals, notions remain on the shelf unimplemented, creating stagnant situations. Furthermore, analysis and ingenuity enable ideas to become viable possibilities. Followers want leaders "to help them stretch the boundaries." Ultimately, leadership is revealed by those willing to step outside of their comfort zones and provide a different voice. Leaders learn by inviting others, whose skills and knowledge they respect, into the conversation. Open, inclusive environments allow different perspectives to flesh out ideas. For this reason, it is important to consider fresh perspectives, especially from those close to your audience. Apply judgment. Be bold. Know how much to listen to critics and naysayers. People engage and align with a vision when they see this occur.

A FOOTNOTE FOR FATHERS

In the same way leaders impact organizations, fathers shape their children's lives. A few words spoken by "Dad" often results in action. Imagine the possibilities when fathers practice active listening. It enables them to reach the hearts and minds of their offspring by more clearly understanding their wants and needs. Are you ready to rise and take others with you?

Buy-in is critical for vision to move from imagination to reality. As needs and conditions change, insight requires a dynamic, ongoing process be in place for continual monitoring and realignment. Team members view their actions differently when true alignment occurs. They embrace team decisions and organizational actions as their own. Leaders ensure people know what they are doing and why they are doing it to facilitate the process. They touch heads and hearts by meeting both emotional and rational needs. Insight is gained about what those needs are and perhaps how they can best be met from listening.

Pepper “Where is the salt and pepper?” No meal is ever complete unless the salt and pepper are on the table. These two herbs and minerals are the most commonly used flavour enhancers since the beginning of time. As I have gotten older, I have tried to cut back on my intake of salt and only use “Pink Himalayan salt”. (The gem of the Himalayan Mountains, pink salt, is said to be the purest salt on earth. Himalayan salt happens to be 85% sodium chloride, and the remainder contains over 80+ minerals. These minerals can help your body balance your PH, regulate water content, remove toxins, help absorb nutrients, prevent muscle cramping, create balance and more. Known for its pure taste and its unique pinkish hue, the Himalayan Pink Salt is one of the top choices for salt).

But what I really want to talk to you about is pepper. Peppercorns contain an impressive list of plant derived chemical compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties. Black peppers have been in use for centuries for their anti-inflammatory, carminative, anti-flatulent properties and did you know that the piperine in black pepper can be credited with the prevention of cancer, and becomes twice as potent when combined with turmeric. The spice also has Vitamin C, Vitamin A, flavonoids, carotenes and other anti-oxidants that help remove harmful free radicals and protect the body from cancers and diseases. The best way to eat pepper to harness maximum benefits is to eat freshly ground pepper, and not cook it along with food. Add it after the cooking process. Black pepper is antibacterial in nature, and therefore helps to cure cold and cough. A teaspoon of honey with freshly crushed pepper does the trick. It also helps to alleviate chest congestion. Now all this time you thought you were putting pepper on your food to give it a little kick without even knowing you were doing something healthy for your body. Black peppercorns contain a good amount of minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese, iron, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron is essential for cellular respiration and blood cell production. They are also an excellent source of many vital B-complex groups of vitamins such as Pyridoxine, riboflavin, thiamin and niacin. Peppercorns are a good source of many antioxidant vitamins such as vitamin-C and vitamin-A. They are also rich in flavonoid polyphenolic anti-oxidants like carotenes, cryptoxanthin, zea-xanthin and lycopene. These compounds help the body remove harmful free radicals and help protect from cancers and diseases. And there is more—Black pepper helps in boosting the metabolism in the body. It burns the unwanted calories and helps in reducing belly fat. Black pepper is very effective against obesity. The daily consumption of black pepper helps in reducing stomach-related problems. You know, of course, they are always trying to make a good thing even better so now you can purchase “Black Pepper Essential Oil”. It can be attributed to its properties as a digestive, diaphoretic, carminative, aperient, antispasmodic, antirheumatic, antiarthritic, antibacterial, and antioxidant substance. What do these words mean?

Digestive: Black pepper is remarkably beneficial for digestion because it stimulates the whole digestive system, from the salivary glands in the mouth to the large intestine, including promoting secretion of digestive juices like acids and bile into the stomach to facilitate digestion.

Antibacterial: It has good antibacterial properties that you

Antispasmodic: It is an effective antispasmodic and gives good relief in case of cramps, muscles pulls, spasms, or convulsions.

When I hear the words “essential oils,” I think highly concentrated concoction and get nervous about maybe overdoing it, especially when you are taking it internally! This is what I found out about this fantastic healthy essential oil. Black pepper essential oil is available in some health food stores and online. A 10-milliliter bottle costs between $10 and $15. Black pepper oil can be inhaled di-

Carminative: Black Pepper Essential Oil is carminative and

helps remove gases and prohibit additional gas formation in the stomach and in the intestines. It also helps inhibit bacteria that are responsible for the formation of gas.

Aperient: Black pepper oil has mild purgative properties, but it is safe for the system, unlike other purgatives like Castor Oil. It helps clean the intestines and at the same time, cures infections in the digestive and the excretory system.

can enjoy without any adverse side effects. It is very effective in curing bacterial infections in the mouth, colon, digestive system, and urinary tract. It also disinfects food that it is added to and protects them from bacterial infections for long periods.

Anti-rheumatic & Anti-arthritic: These are two of the best qualities of black pepper oil. It is warming, stimulating and improves circulation, thereby giving immediate relief for rheumatism and arthritis, particularly during the winter when the symptoms are aggravated the most. It is also effective in removing toxins like uric acid from the blood, thereby benefiting people suffering from chronic rheumatism, arthritis, and gout.

Diaphoretic & Diuretic: Black pepper oil, when ingested, increases sweating and urination. Both of these properties play an important role in the removal of toxins from the body, clearing of the pores on the skin, and disinfecting the body. Sweating and urinating help eliminate extra water and fat from the body, thereby reducing weight, lowering blood pressure and making the body very relaxed. These properties are also helpful for reducing inflammation. Antioxidant: This is yet another beneficial property of black pepper oil. It protects the body from damages done by oxidants (free radicals) and also helps to repair those damages that have already been done. It also delays adverse effects of aging such as vision loss, macular degeneration, wrinkling of the skin, degeneration and loosening of the muscles, loss of mobility in the joints, nervous disorders, and memory loss.

rectly from the bottle, diffused at home for a warming aroma, taken internally in small doses and applied topically. When taking black pepper oil internally, be sure to purchase a high-quality, 100 percent pure-grade product that’s made by a trustworthy and reputable company. Because of its potent and medicinal properties, you want to use the best product you can find. When applied topically, black pepper oil creates a warming sensation, so use small doses and dilute it with a carrier oil, like coconut oil, jojoba oil or almond oil. Use a 1:1 dilution, especially if you apply the oil to sensitive skin. There are so many ways to use black pepper essential oil, and its uses go far beyond flavouring your food. Here are some easy ways to use black pepper oil at home: To increase circulation and blood flow to the muscles and nerves, add 3–5 drops of black pepper oil to a warm compress and apply to the abdomen or areas of concern.

“Highly Recommended by Local Builders”

To ease the discomfort of constipation, diarrhea and gas, take 1–2 drops of black pepper oil internally by adding it to a smoothie, soup or savoury dish. It can also be applied topically to the abdomen.

Highest Warranty In The Business

To relieve muscle injuries and tendonitis, apply black pepper oil topically to the area of concern. To aid respiratory conditions, take internally or inhale the oil directly from the bottle. To relieve congested airways, apply 2–3 drops topically to the chest. To reduce cigarette cravings, diffuse black pepper oil or inhale it directly from the bottle when having a craving. To use it as a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatism, apply 2–3 drops topically to the area of concern. To help detoxify the body, take 1–2 drops internally or apply 2–3 drops topically to the bottoms of the feet. To add flavour to soups, stews, baked vegetables, salads and entrees, add 1–2 drops of black pepper essential oil. Black pepper essential oil can be a strong irritant in high doses, so dilution with a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba oil) is recommended for topical use. It’s smart to try a patch test before applying black pepper oil to a larger area of your body. Start by applying a drop to your wrist or foot to make sure you won’t have an adverse reaction. If you are not comfortable using black pepper oil, just stick with what you know and use the same black pepper you always have. But remember, too much of a good thing can be bad! So is the case with black pepper. Control the amount of black pepper intake because it can cause some serious and some not so serious side effects, if

not taken in moderate quantity. Here’s a list of all that can go wrong with too much black pepper:

1. Creates Burning Sensation in Stomach:

Well, we all know that black pepper is ‘hot’. Common sense tells us that we should limit the use of black pepper in our dishes. But, sometimes common sense takes a back seat! In such a case, the overuse of black pepper can lead to severe burning in the stomach. Don’t worry, the burning will pass, it’s just temporary. Just be careful next time!

2. Can Cause Death:

Now, this is one of those rarest of rare cases. But if pepper is consumed directly, it can get into the lungs and cause death, especially in children. So, it is advised to eat black pepper by mixing it with your food.

4. Contraindication with Certain Drugs:

Patients taking cyclosporine A, cholinergic, digoxin, and cytochrome P450 should avoid consuming black pepper. 5. Gastrointestinal Disorders: Black pepper may upset the stomach or cause gastrointestinal problems. So, patients suffering from gastrointestinal disorders should avoid taking black pepper.

6. May Lead to Respiratory Problems:

One must not inhale black pepper as it may lead to respiratory problems like respiratory irritation, asthma, etc.

7. May Cause Irritation:

In some rare cases, the intake of black pepper can lead to skin irritation with symptoms like itching, swelling, and redness in skin.

8. Difficulties During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

If you are pregnant, your body is already sensitive to spices. So, try and stay off black pepper. If you are craving the flavour, add some to your favourite dish, but in minimal quantities. The hot flavour and taste of black pepper can be transferred into breast milk. So, unless you want to give your infant a crash course in spices, stay away from black pepper if you are breastfeeding. If you weigh in the pros and cons of consuming black pepper, the pros will win hands down! The only way black pepper can harm you is if you consume too much of it, which is an unlikely scenario. So, enjoy your favourite spice in moderation! Have a Fabulous and Fantastic Day! Kathryn Hartwell

HAPPY SPRING! As I sit here writing this article, the birds are out and singing a happy tune. Spring is definitely in the air. This idea made me reflect on outdoor activities and how many of us will be venturing outside now, enjoying the fresh air and shaking off the dust from being indoors most of winter. It's a great opportunity to go for a walk or run, and soon the bikes will be on the pathways as well. Strathmore has many beautiful neighbourhoods (we are pretty lucky) and these neighbourhoods are all interconnected by a series of pathways that link our town. Did you know that we have over 20 km of pathways? And guess what else we have? An app! It’s called Smore Paths and it was designed by SAY (Strathmore Assembly of Youth). It is very user friendly and gives you great details on 15 different pathways around town. Go to www.smorepaths.ca or to the Apple App Store to find the app and add it to your mobile devices. I am a runner and I've come to know our path system very well over the 17+ years that I've lived here. At first, I had to be a little creative to run "off the roadway" but over time, the path system has gotten better and better. Now, while I'm tracking my progress or planning on meeting a fellow runner, I can name the paths that we plan to use. There are many reasons to enjoy the great outdoors here and another one is Disc Golf. The Disc Golf Course weaves its way around various parks and playgrounds in Strathmore. What is Disc Golf? It is a game where you throw a disc (like a frisbee) and try to land it into a net. It's a lot of fun and you can get some great exercise and enjoy the spring weather at the same time.

The maps are available at the town office or online at www.strathmorediscgolf.com We have to thank the Strathmore Assembly of Youth for pursuing this great idea and making it a reality. My plan is to take advantage of this game when my family comes to town for Father’s Day. I am organizing a Disc Golf Tournament with prizes – it’s going to be so fun! What I love best about the pathways and Disc Golf is that they are all literally right outside our front doors... Our Communities in Strathmore are excellent for families trying to create ways to enjoy outdoor fun. Go explore!

DISC GOLF Disc Golf is played like traditional golf, but with flying discs (similar to a Frisbee) instead of balls and clubs. One point (stroke) is counted each time the disc is thrown and when a penalty is incurred. The goal is to play each hole in the fewest strokes possible. The player with the lowest total strokes of the entire course wins. SAFETY FIRST ALL OTHER PARK USERS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY. Never throw when players or park users are within range. Always give park users the right of way. Please politely ask other park users if you can play through if they are using the green spaces on the course. Be aware of your surroundings and environment. PETS MUST BE KEPT ON LEASH AT ALL TIMES. Town of Strathmore Bylaws stipulate that any dogs must be on leash and under your control at all times. Please make sure your dog is not running free and please make sure you pick up after them. OUT OF BOUNDS OB lines/areas are indicated on each hole sign. Please play with the intent of never crossing an OB line - shorter, more accurate throws are essential in residential areas. If any area of O.B. is visible between the disc and O.B. line, then the disc is considered O.B. A throw that lands out of bounds, must be played from a point 3 feet in bounds from where the disc went out of bounds. Permanent water hazards, backyards, pathways, and roads are always out of bounds. Please note that pathways are always out of bounds, and your disc is NOT PERMITTED TO CROSS THEM at any time. This is to ensure safety and to avoid discs landing in back yards. IF YOUR DISC LANDS IN A PRIVATE YARD: Please ask permission before entering private property! If you enter without permission you are trespassing - this is not only disrespectful, but also against the law! Several fences have already been broken by players jumping into yards to retrieve their discs. Please find a way to the front of the house and knock on the door to get permission to retrieve your disc. We want the residents in town to continue to support disc golf and players damaging property is not a good way to do that. COURSE COURTESY If your disc ends up on private property, always ask permission from the landowner before entering. Remain quiet and avoid unnecessary movements while others are throwing. Stand behind the player who is throwing until throw is complete. Remove disc from Disc Golf Hole after completing the hole. Help new players learn the rules. Allow faster groups to play through when possible. Pick up trash and put in proper receptacles. Do not alter the course (trees, bushes, etc.) in any way If you find a lost disc, please call the player or put it on the Facebook page to get the disc returned.

Happy Spring... See you on the pathways!

Leadership, confidence, balance and movement forward all signify the positive energy that June brings. After the fast pace of May, it’s nice to slow down, take stock and recognize that things are leveling out and getting accomplished. Focus on family gatherings and events that mark milestones of achievement in the lives of loved ones. Celebrate! This month sees long term goals and commitments come to a favourable conclusion. Projects in the works since the beginning of the year are now taking shape and producing results. Celebrate your accomplishments and recognize your value and worth! Heads up! There is chaotic energy inherent in each day of June with the exception of 8, 9, 17, 18, 26 and 27. It requires structure, focused attention, firm guidelines and rules to follow or else it can feel chaotic and bit out of control. Caution: Pay extra attention to rules of the road when driving. Push it or break the rules? There’s a high possibility you could pay with a ticket or worse, an accident. Due to June’s inherent influence, your gut instinct will be strong. When you get intuitive hunches you must listen even if they don’t make sense. You’ll be grateful you did as you’ll save yourself the headache of a ‘lessons learned’ experience. Avoid chaos when traveling by building more time into appointments, pace yourself and allow for unforeseen circumstances that may crop up. June has an abundance principle! It produces favourable results when right action is followed in both personal and business endeavors. Observe proper rules of engagement. Keep commitments and your word and the chaotic energy can transform into amazing accomplishments showcasing a rock-solid reputation among colleagues bringing increased business opportunities. Welcome the leadership energy of June and get ready for an excellent month!

contemplate solutions to problems from a different observation vantage. Today intuition and gut instinct are super strong. So is the need to pay double attention to the rules both on and off the road; zero wiggle room for pushing it. Avoid any kind of rushing whatsoever. Slow and steady works the best today.

June 9, 18, 27

This day is a mixed bag with a ton of sensitivity, depth of sentiment and desire to retreat into internalized contemplative thought. The energy wants to stand back and observe from an outside standpoint, think about the situation then make a decision. The ultimate role of today is to problem solve urgent circumstances. They seem to come out of nowhere. There is a healing benefit when one decides to go through self-examination and purification releasing disempowering behaviors that serve to undermine intentions. Take time today for self-reflection. Evening wants solitude.

The energy of this day takes you away from people and the socializing atmosphere. The morning is the only social element we’ve got so complete meaningful communication by then. Noon the desire for solitude and a peaceful environment take over. Plan a walk in nature or an activity where you can work alone with your own thoughts for the least aggravation. It’s easy to get rubbed the wrong way and slip into a reclusive mood and withdraw. Politely excuse yourself and take the space you need to think things through. By the evening the mood lifts allowing people in again 
