Good Moms have sticky floors, messy kitchens, laundry piles, dirty ovens and happy kids.

You may never know what it feels like to push a VHS tape into a VCR. There is nothing wrong with being happy with who you are. Just don’t let that be an excuse to stay in a bad situation. If there is something about your life that you don’t like, stop complaining about it. Get off your butt and do something about it. If I ever had to run for my life, I would probably die.

I’m actually not funny. I’m just really mean and people think I’m joking. All inclusive IN HOME hearing care including: - Complete in home Hearing Assessments, weekend appointments available. - Hearing Aid fittings and ongoing in home after care and service of hearing aids.

50 Year Old Butt

New to Calgary, I was eager to meet people. So one day I struck up a conversation with the only other woman in the gym. Pointing to two men playing racquetball in a nearby court, I said to her, “There’s my husband.” Then I added, “The thin one—not the fat one.” After a slightly uncomfortable silence she replied, “And that’s my husband—the fat one.”

A man comes home from work and finds his wife admiring her breasts in the mirror. He asks, “What are you doing?” She replies, “I went to the doctor today, and he told me I have the breasts of a 25 year old.” The husband retorts, “Well, what did he say about your 50 year old butt?” She replied, “Frankly dear, your name never came up.”

Golf Local Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad. ~A.A. Milne

Just another day of Golf Moses, Jesus, and an old, bearded man were out playing golf one day. Moses pulled up to the tee and drove a long one. It landed in the fairway but rolled directly toward a water trap. Quickly, Moses raised his club, the water parted and the ball rolled to the other side, safe and sound. Next, Jesus strolled up to the tee and hit a nice long one directly toward the same water trap. It landed directly in the center of the pond and hovered over the water. Jesus casually walked out on the pond and chipped it up onto the green. The third guy gets up and sort of randomly whacks the ball. It headed out over the fence and into oncoming traffic on a nearby street. It bounced off a truck and hit a tree. From there, it bounced onto the roof of a nearby shack and rolled down into the gutter, down the downspout, out onto the fairway and right toward the aforementioned pond. On the way to the pond, it hit a little stone and bounced out over the water and onto a lily pad where it rested quietly. Suddenly, a very large bullfrog jumped up on the lily pad and snatched the ball into his mouth. Just then, an eagle swooped down and grabbed the frog and flew away. As they passed over the green, the frog squealed with fright and dropped the ball, which bounced right into the hole for a beautiful hole in one. Moses then turned to Jesus and said, “I hate playing with your Dad. Page 12

Lakeside Golf Club

Your Community Golf Course 1990 was the year that put Chestermere on the map! The then Summer Village had just tied into Calgary water and all lakefront homes were hooked into the newly constructed storm and sewer system. The first of many developments was underway, showcasing the first ever parade of show homes built in Chestermere. In August, 1991 the newly constructed Lakeside Golf Club opened golf became a community amenity for all Chestermere residents. Since then, Lakeside Golf Club became a meeting place for golf enthusiasts young and old. Initially the clubhouse was a temporary trailer structure which functioned for more than 5 years. The temporary facilities offered a casual restaurant operation, pro shop and provided storage for golf clubs, pull carts and power carts. In 1996 Lakeside Golf Club opened with a state of the art permanent clubhouse offering a formal dining room, family restaurant, pro shop, healthclub and squash courts. This new structure finalized what was always planned as a full service golf club. Today, the golf club continues to operate as a major amenity within the community. Memberships are available however the golf club will always remain open to the public and available to the residents of Chestermere. Bogey’s restaurant is open year round and offers nightly specials throughout the year and provides summer and winter menus to satisfy even the toughest of food critics. The clubhouse also offers a dining and banquet facility for larger groups. Weddings, tournaments, birthday parties or conferences can all be accommodated with guest capacities of 200 plus. Golf is a great game for the family, young or old, novice or experienced, the golf course and the practice facilities will allow anyone the opportunity to www.thenewsyneighbour.com

work on their individual skills. Lessons are available for individuals, groups and families, the Canadian PGA certified staff will provide you with the latest information, tools and equipment to make your experience much more gratifying. The economic impact that the golf course brings to the community is staggering! With 300 golfers playing daily, it is estimated that approximately 200 of these golfers travel to Chestermere from Calgary and surrounding areas to play Lakeside Golf Club. The golfers not only support the golf course but spend time and money at many of the other businesses within the Town. With the golf course open from mid-April thru mid-October that is an estimated 36 thousand travelers coming to Chestermere because of the golf course. Many homeowners in Chestermere were lured to the town because of the golf course and the lifestyle that the golf community offers. Lakeside Golf Club is also the largest employer in the Town of Chestermere. Employing more than 120 people annually, the golf course offers a great place for young and old to work. The various disciplines allow for a diverse work force and many of the employees today have been working at the golf course for more than a decade. The golf course hires kids as young as 14 and has no age restriction for seniors. Jobs for part time moms and dads and fulltime careers are all available. If you are a resident of Chestermere and have not experienced the amenities offered at Lakeside it may be time to take a look. The management and staff are very service oriented and pride themselves on offering the best experience possible each time you visit. If you have enjoyed this article and would like to read more about Lakeside Golf Club in future articles please pass on your comments to the editor and publisher and we will make every effort to provide a monthly information piece. Handicapping your score!

As I mentioned in the golf issue last May in the Newsy Neighbour, I am a golfaholic! I wish I was a better player but, like the majority of weekend players, I like to play – not practice! My biggest pet peeve in the sport is the so-called “sandbagger”: the weekend player that has no idea how to keep or record a legitimate handicap. You know the person I am talking about; the player with an inflated handicap that has a career day and shoots a 79 or an 81. Unfortunately, there is one or two in every tournament. While some people are just plain cheaters, part of the problem is lack of knowledge on how to record or register a true handicap. Golf Canada (formerly the Royal Canadian Golf Association) made a huge change in the formula for calculating a golf handicap this season. Following in the footsteps of the United States Golf Association, golfers in our country should now follow the new methodology Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) system. The new ESC system gives the golfer a maximum number of strokes they can record for handicapping purposes. For example, if your current handicap is between 10 and 19, the max score you can now take on a hole is 7. If you blow up on a par 3, record a 7. If you blow up on a par 5, record a 7. This is a system that is designed to minimize the effects of the dreaded “disaster holes.” When ESC limits are in use, golfers must still count all their strokes. If you shoot a 91, you can’t claim to your buddies that you shot a 79 because of ESC limits. Your score is the number of shots you played. But the score you submit to the handicap committee or input into the computer is the total that results after you apply the Equitable Stroke Control System. So why is Golf Canada making this significant change? Apparently, under the old system, in head-to-head matches, the lower handicap player had a better than 50% chance of winning. The new system is supposed to level the playing field. This will only happen if honesty is involved. A few years ago, golf replaced hockey as the most popular sport among Canadians. According to some studies, Page 16

The Newsy Neighbour

over 6 million people in Canada play golf. Half of these are what Golf Canada describes as core golfers. Core golfers are players who play at least 8 rounds a season and score between 80 and 119. Interestingly, only 350,000 of these players maintain an official Golf Canada Handicap through the handicap network portal on www.golfcanada.ca. Aces Wild! Steve Moran of Canyon Meadows Golf & CC had a nice start to his golfing season. The 38th Annual Riley’s Best Ball Tournament kicked off last month with the annual Media/Manager event. Moran was playing his first game of the season in a group ahead of our foursome and he aced the 184 yard par 3, 16th hole with his four hybrid. Good thing he was a member and his hole-in-one insurance was paid up! Believe it or not, I have actually had four aces in my golf career; two that were official and two that were not. Back in the 90’s, I had the pleasure to take part in the longest day in golf fund raising event history at Priddis Greens. We played 206 holes that day. I did not break a 1000 and on the 97th hole of the day, I made an ace. My second unofficial ace happened a few years ago on men’s night at the Windermere Valley Golf Course in Invermere. I learned a very good lesson during that round. I was playing very poorly and was not on my game. On the 14th hole (a short par 4), I pulled my tee shot and the ball took off. I was mad and frustrated and didn’t even bother to go look for it. I took an X on the card and walked to the 15th tee. I think you probably know what happened next. Yes, I aced the 16th hole. However, as I failed to complete the 14th it did not count as an official hole-in-one. Stupid me! Good luck to all 206 teams registered in the 38th Annual Riley’s Best Ball Tournament. This tournament is one of the best in the city and the first of 10 Calgary Golf Association tournaments for the 2012 season. Championship Sunday is set for Sunday, June 24th at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club. 2012 also marks the 100th Anniversary of Golf Alberta! About Jock Wilson:

Jock has been involved in the Calgary sport media scene for close to 30 years. He hosts the Calgary Stampeder football broadcasts on QR77 and is the co-host of Sportstalk with Mark Stephen from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Golfing with the Cows A man staggers into an emergency room with a concussion, multiple bruises, two black eyes and a five iron wrapped tightly around his throat. Naturally, the doctor asks him what happened. “Well, it was like this,” said the man. “I was having a quiet round of golf with my wife, when at a difficult hole, we both sliced our balls into a pasture of cows. We went to look for them, and while I was rooting around, noticed one of the cows had something white at its rear end. I walked over and lifted up the tail, and sure enough, there was a golf ball with my wife’s monogram on it - stuck right in the middle of the cow’s butt.” “That’s when I made my big mistake.” “What did you do?” asks the doctor. “Well, I lifted the cow’s tail again and yelled to my wife, ‘Hey, this looks like yours!’” “I don’t remember much after that!”

Golfers - Are You Ready To Swing? Self-Massage Can Help! By Cynthia Barnesky

It is time to pull out the shoes, gloves, balls and golf clubs. To help prevent injuries and to increase your swing, here are a few things every golfer should know. From pro to beginner or young to seasoned, it is important that your body, mind and soul are ready to give you all you need to play a great and pain-free game. Did know that selfmassage is one of the key tools to help you become a better golfer? As a golfer, you already have the tool to perform self-massage: your golf club. This great tool can help you give your body a needed warm up and stretch before, during and even after the game. Here are just some quick tips: Take your golf club and start massaging your legs by holding both ends of your club between your hands and use your club like a stick, rubbing your calf muscles, hamstrings, thighs (IT band), then also use it on your ‘Gluts’ and lower back muscles. The neck can also be massaged with your golf club. For your forearms, hold down the top of the club with one hand as you clench the club between your knees while sitting. Then, rub your free arm and forearm against the club. Just be careful not to press too hard; if it really hurts, stop! Remember to stretch with breath and keep your muscles warmed up before your first swing. Have a great and pain-free season!

Four married guys go golfing. At the 4th hole, the following conversation took place: First Guy: “You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out golfing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I will paint every room in the house next weekend.” Second Guy: “That’s nothing! I had to promise my wife that I will build her a new deck for the pool.” Third Guy: “Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I will remodel the kitchen for her.” They continue to play the hole when they realized that the fourth guy had not said a word. So they asked him, “You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to come golfing this weekend. What’s the deal?” Fourth Guy: “I just set my alarm for 5:30 a.m. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, gave the wife a nudge and said, ‘Golf Course or Intercourse?’ and she said, ‘Wear your sweater.’” Page 18

FAMILY PAGE MAY 2012 What on earth is a hippocampus? Well, did you know nurturing a child early in life may help him or her develop a larger hippocampus, the brain region important for learning, memory and stress responses? Studies in human children found a connection between early social experiences and the volume of the amygdala, which helps regulate the processing and memory of emotional reactions. Numerous studies also have found that children raised in a nurturing environment typically do better in school and are more emotionally developed than their non-nurtured peers. Brain images have revealed that a mother’s love physically affects the volume of her child’s hippocampus. In a study, children of nurturing mothers had hippocampal volumes 10 percent larger than children whose mothers were not as nurturing and research has suggested a link between a larger hippocampus and better memory. Here are a few really good suggestions for you and your family to have a happy, healthy relationship.

Being a Good Parent

There are many ways to raise happy, well-adjusted kids, but science has a few tips for making sure they turn out okay.

LOL! Joking Helps!

Lighten up! Joking with your toddler helps set them up for social success, according to research presented at the Economic and Social Research Councils’ Festival of Social Science 2011. When parents joke and pretend, it gives young kids the tools to think creatively, make friends and manage stress. So feel free to play court jester — your kids will thank you later.

Be Positive

No surprise here: Parents who express negative emotions toward their infants or handle them roughly are likely to find themselves with aggressive kindergartners. That’s bad news, because behavioural aggression at age 5 is linked to aggression later in life, even toward future romantic partners. So if you find yourself in a cycle of angry parent, angry baby, angrier parent, try to break free. It will ease your problems in the long run.

Foster Self-Compassion

Parental guilt is its own industry, but avoid the undertow! Research suggests that selfcompassion is a very important life skill, helping people stay resilient in the face of challenges. Self-compassion is made up of mindfulness, the ability to manage thoughts and emotions without being carried away or repressing them, common humanity, or empathy with the suffering of others, and self-kindness, a recognition of your own suffering and a commitment to solving the problem. Parents can use self-compassion when coping with difficulties in child-rearing. In doing so, they can set an example for their kids.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Special Feature... What Did I Do Today? What did I do today? Today I left some dishes dirty, The bed got made around 3:30. The diapers soaked a little longer, The odour grew a little stronger. The crumbs I spilled the day before Are staring at me from the floor. The fingerprints there on the wall Will likely be there still next fall. The dirty streaks on those window panes Will still be there next time it rains. Shame on you, you sit and say, Just what did you do today? I nursed a baby till he slept, I held a toddler while she wept. I played a game of hide and seek, I squeezed a toy so it would squeak. I pulled a wagon, sang a song, Taught a child right from wrong. What did I do this whole day through? Not much that shows, I guess that’s true. Unless you think that what I’ve done Might be important to someone, With bright brown eyes and soft brown hair, If that is true... I’ve done my share. - Author Unknown

Mother’s Day Who ran to help me when I fell, And would some pretty story tell, Or kiss the place to make it well? My mother. ~Ann Taylor

I CAN ONLY IMAGINE I can only imagine the beauty of your smile, In the far away places of my mind. I can only imagine how you loved me, And how you must have been very kind. I can only imagine how you must have felt When I took my first step, And how you would feel my pain when I fell, I imagine you even wept. I can only imagine you there For those special events in my life. I can only imagine you there When I suffered great loss and strife. I can only imagine your words If we sat for a chat over tea. I can only imagine the wisdom of old You would gladly impart to me. I can only imagine the feel Of your arms around me tight. I can only imagine your soft kiss On my cheek so very light. I can only imagine you near. I can only imagine you here. I can only imagine so clear! Simple Ways to Scatter Joy This Mother’s Day

meal preparation, or running errands. Putting yourself in her shoes is a great way to let her know how much you appreciate what she does for you every single day.

It really is the thought that counts, especially when finding the perfect way to express your sincere appreciation for all that Mom does to give support, comfort, and joy year round. This Mother’s Day, as people are looking for simple ways to show Mom how much they care, it means that every gift and card has an even bigger job to do.

Spending quality time together, whether it’s an outing, a meal together, or just an afternoon spent going through old photo albums, is oftentimes the most precious gift of all.

Show Her Your Gratitude Think about all of the things your mom has done for you over the years to show her love and support. Write out what you remember about these instances and how important they are to you in a heartfelt note. It only takes a few minutes, but creates a lasting keepsake that she will treasure and reread for years to come. Shower her with the same attention she gives you by spending some time talking together. Take this opportunity to find out fun facts, stories, and details of her life that you might have otherwise not known.

It’s All About Appreciation Mom has spent countless hours and sleepless nights caring for you, worrying about you and helping you to succeed, so Mother’s Day is a great day to pamper her with all of the things she doesn’t often get to indulge in -- some quiet time to read, a bubble bath, or just the free time to take a walk. Try tackling some of the thankless tasks that Mom performs every day -- whether it is household chores, Page 24

All She Needs is Love

Use Mother’s Day as a catalyst to stay in better touch with Mom year-round. Commit to showing her the same appreciation, gratitude and love she has shown you by regularly calling, sending her notes and always listening to her.

Your Mother

She can deal with stress and carry heavy burdens. She smiles when she feels like screaming, and she sings when she feels like crying. She cries when she’s happy and laughs when she’s afraid. Her love is unconditional. There’s only one thing wrong with her: she forgets what she’s worth! On Mother’s Day I have written a poem for you. In the interest of poetic economy and truth, I have succeeded in concentrating my deepest feelings and beliefs into two perfectly crafted lines: You’re my mother, I would have no other! ~Forest Houtenschi

Mom, when thoughts of you are in our hearts, we are never far from home. ~Author Unknown www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Mom is taking a bath

Dear Kids, Don’t be alarmed; the world isn’t coming to an end. I am simply taking a bath. It will take about 30 minutes and will involve soap and water. Yes, I know how to swim. Even if I didn’t, forcing myself to drown in a half-inch of lukewarm water is more work than I’ve got energy for. (Which reminds me, I’m all for science projects, but the next time you want to see if Play-Doh floats, use cold water.) Don’t panic if I’m not out right on time. I’ve heard that people don’t dissolve in water, and I’d like to test the theory. While I’m in the tub, I’d like you to remember a few things: The large slab of wood between us is called a door. Do not bang to hear my voice. I promise that even though you can’t see me, I am on the other side. I’m not digging an escape tunnel and running for the border, no matter what I said a while ago. I didn’t mean it. Honest. There will be plenty of time later to tell me about your day. “Later” means at a time when I am no longer naked, wet and contemplating the bubble gum in the blow dryer. I know you have important things to tell me. (Please let one of them be that you have invented a new way to blow bubbles, not a new way to add gum to your hair...) Believe it or not, shouting, “TELEPHONE!” through the closed bathroom door will not make the phone stop ringing. Answer it and take a message. Since Amazing Mind-Reading Mom has the day off, you’ll need to write that message down. Use paper and a pencil. Do not use your brother and the laundry marker. We can’t send him to school with telephone-number tattoos. Water makes me wet, not deaf. I can still tell the difference between the sound of “nothing” and the sound of a child playing the piano with a basketball. I can also hear you tattling at the top of your lungs. I’m choosing not to answer you. Don’t call your dad at work and tell him I am unconscious in the bathroom. No matter how much I would like it, water does not make me forgetful. I remember who you are and why you are grounded. No, you can’t go to Shelby’s house to play. No, you can’t go to Shelby’s house to use the bathroom. If someone is in our other bathroom, you will just have to think dry thoughts and wait. Unless you have four feet and a tail, do not think of going outside to “water” the lawn. I know the dog does it. The neighbours don’t feel the need to call me when the dog does it. Unless the house catches fire, stay inside and keep the doors locked. Do not go outside and throw rocks at the bathroom window to get my attention. I know it works in the movies, but this is reality, a place where people don’t like to sit in a tub while rocks and broken glass rain down on them. Do not set the house on fire. Call me if there is an emergency. Emergencies are: 1. Dad has fallen off the roof. 2. Your brother and/or sister are bleeding. 3. There’s a red fire truck in front of our house. Emergencies are not: 1. Dad has fallen asleep. 2. Someone on TV is bleeding. 3. There’s a red pickup truck in front of our house. By the way, all Play-Doh experiments are hereby canceled. Be good. Entertain yourselves. (Yes, you can do both at the same time.) Try colouring, playing a game or paying that stack of bills on the coffee table. I’ll be out soon. Maybe. Love, Mom www.thenewsyneighbour.com

There are so many benefits, such as support, accountability, and structure all of which are important for sticking to your goals. Setting a time, catching a class, joining a walking group or trying a new sport, will help cement your commitment. You are less likely to skip out if you know that people are expecting and counting on you. Joining an active group even if you don’t know anyone can also have the same benefits. Meeting new people, and trying new and fun ways to be active is always a recipe for success. So we know that being active in a group can be the key to becoming and staying motivated, but what sort of group should you join? Hockey, Soccer, Walking Groups, Group Fitness Classes, Yoga classes, Salsa Lessons, Taekwondo, Aqua Fit, Cycling Clubs, or start your own group - the sky is the limit! Your local community probably has something for everyone; check your local paper, community website, recreational centres, or make an appointment with a friend to go for a walk. It’s important to pick an activity that you enjoy. The more you like doing an activity, the more motivated you will be to go and the less likely you will be to make excuses not to go. Want to try something completely new, something out of your comfort zone and you’re not sure you will like it? Commit to going at least 5 times; in that amount of time you will know if that activity is a good fit for you. -Written by Anndee King www.thenewsyneighbour.com

BODY PARTS

We’ll make you smile at

We go day to day never thinking about our poor circulatory system. If you are a smoker, you are being extra hard on your body – just take the time to read this article and maybe it will give you that extra little push you need to kick the habit once and forever!

Diseases of the Circulatory System The circulatory system is an organ system that passes nutrients, gases, hormones, blood cells, etc. to and from cells in the body to help fight diseases and help stabilize body temperature. The circulatory system involves the circulation of blood, which serves to move blood to a site or sites where it can be oxygenated, and where wastes can be disposed. The circulatory system is made up of the vessels and the muscles that help and control the flow of the blood around the body. On average, your body has about 5 litres of blood continually traveling through it by way of the circulatory system. Here are some common diseases that affect the circulatory system: Angina: It is characterized by severe chest discomfort and pain. It is caused due to lack of blood supply to the muscles of the heart. Basically, it is manifested as a complication by the constriction of the blood vessels. Angina is a warning sign of a heart attack. Arrhythmia: Arrhythmia is irregular heart rhythm, i.e., the heart beats abnormally at a slower or faster rate. Arrhythmia may be congenital and results from a heart defect. Atherosclerosis: Atherosclerosis results from accumulation of fatty deposits in the walls of the blood vessels, especially arteries. Over a period of time, the arterial walls harden and lose their elasticity. Arteries are primarily affected by atherosclerosis. Complication of atherosclerosis includes cardiovascular disease and heart attack. Cardiomyopathy: This is caused due to weakening of the heart muscles or myocardium. In the early stages, the ventricular muscles or muscles of the lower heart chamber are affected. If left untreated, it spreads to the upper heart muscles. In severe cases, cardiomyopathy can result in congestive heart failure and at times, death. Congenital Heart Defects: These are defects present at birth and may be mild or severe. The exact cause of congenital heart disease is not known. In some cases, genetic problems cause this defect, while others develop without any reason. Coronary Artery Disease: Coronary artery disease or coronary heart disease is the most common disease of the circulatory system. It is caused due to accumulation of plaque in the coronary arterial walls, which impairs the blood supply to the heart. CAD is the leading cause of death all over the www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Hypertension: Hypertension or high blood pressure is one of the common disorders of the circulatory system. Hypertension increases the risk of heart attack and other heart diseases. Hypercholesterolemia: Hypercholesterolemia is characterized by an elevated cholesterol level. There are two primary types of cholesterol, namely, low-density lipoproteins (LDL) or bad cholesterol and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or good cholesterol. Presence of high amounts of bad cholesterol (LDL) increases the risk for heart diseases and stroke. Peripheral Vascular Disease: Peripheral vascular disease affects the blood circulation to the extreme portions of the body, including the arms and legs. Peripheral artery disease is the most common type of peripheral vascular disease, which is the deposition of fatty acids in the arterial walls. Driving Through Sask

Two guys are driving through Saskatchewan when they get pulled over by a peace officer. The officer walks up, taps on the window with his nightstick, the driver rolls down the window, and the trooper smacks him in the head with the stick. The driver says, “Why’d you do that? The officer says, “You’re in Saskatchewan, son. When I pull you over, you’ll have your license ready.” Driver says, “I’m sorry, officer, I’m not from around here.” The officer runs a check on the guy’s license, and he’s clean. He gives the guy his license back and walks around to the passenger side and taps on the window. The passenger rolls his window down, and the officer smacks him with the nightstick. The passenger says, “What’d you do that for?” The cop says, “Just making your wishes come true.” The passenger says, “Huh?” The cop says, “I know that two miles down the road you’re gonna say, ‘I wish that pig would’ve tried that crap with me.’”

The engaged girlfriend said: “The other night, when my boyfriend came home, he found me in the leather bodice, 4-inch stilettos and mask. He said, ‘You are the woman of my life, I love you.’ Then we made love all night long.” The mistress stated: “Oh, yes! The other night we met in his office. I was wearing the leather bodice, mega stilettos, mask over my eyes and a raincoat. When I opened the raincoat, he didn’t say a word. We made love all night.” The married one then said, “The other night I sent the kids to stay at my mother’s for the night. I got myself ready, leather bodice, super stilettos and mask over my eyes. Which Tire? At the University of Calgary, there were four sophomores taking Organic Chemistry. They did so well on all the quizzes, midterms and labs, etc., that each had an “A” so far for the semester. These four friends were so confident that the weekend before finals, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and party with some friends there. They had a great time, however. After all the hearty partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn’t make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final and explain to him why they missed it. They explained that they had gone to UVA for the weekend with the plan to come back in time to study, but, unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn’t have a spare, and couldn’t get help for a long time. As a result, they missed the final. The professor thought it over and then agreed they could make up the final the following day. The guys were elated and relieved. They studied that night and went in the next day at the time the professor had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, worth five points. It was something simple about free radical formation. “Cool,” they thought at the same time, each one in his separate room, “this is going to be easy.” Each finished the problem and then turned the page. On the second page was written: (For 95 points): Which tire?

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and two cups of coffee. A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and filled it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous “YES”. The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed. “Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favourite passions. Things, that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car. The sand is everything else - the small stuff.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued. “There is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you...” “So... pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Worship with your family. Play with your children. Take your partner out to dinner. Spend time with good friends. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap. Take care of the golf balls first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.” One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled and said, “I’m glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

PARENT LINK

Parent Link Centers are Provincially funded to support parents and caregivers by providing early childhood development programs and services that are uniquely designed to meet the unique needs of children and families in Alberta communities. Each centre offers parent education programs, programs for young children to learn and play, information and referrals, family support services (such as lending libraries, resource exchanges, family counseling, etc.) and developmental screening to support optimal child development. Parent Link Centres are all about connecting parents to parents and resources in their home community. To access developmental screening or for information about other Parent Link Centre programs and services in S.E. Rocky View call Community Services at 403-207-7060.

AGES AND STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT TEN TO TWELVE MONTHS By Jeanette MacKay, Reprinted This is the fourth in a series of articles on child development written to help parents and caregivers recognize and understand the ages and stages of a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development during the first five years. These are only guidelines as every child is unique with their own personality, learning style and family background. There are, however, some general similarities that can help you recognize the stages of development and offer a nurturing environment where your child may develop to their full potential. Kidz 1st Network Parent Link Centre also offers developmental screening so that you can monitor and celebrate your child’s progress or access information for early intervention when this seems appropriate. The tenth to twelfth months of development will see your baby busily exploring her world and accomplishing many wonderful things. You can encourage your baby by taking baby’s lead in her explorations and playing with her. Offer words of praise and encouragement and rejoice with her in her accomplishments. Emotionally, baby is expressing many feelings and offers affection by hugs, kisses and smiles. He may be shy around new people and he will seek comfort when upset through his actions such as raising his arms to be picked up. Page 36

The Newsy Neighbour

Physically, baby is perfecting a pincer grasp (using the tips of her index finger and thumb) and she uses her index finger to poke at things and point. She is able to hold a spoon but still needs help with its use. She tries to stack one block on top of another and likes to put containers of different sizes in each other. Baby can crawl expertly and quickly moves from one place to another. She is learning to walk by herself and uses furniture or other large objects for support while she practices. Intellectually, baby understands simple sentences, questions and requests such as “Find your ball”, “Where’s your shoe”, “Wave bye-bye”. Baby will imitate sounds, actions, and facial expressions and he associates these with things, e.g. “What does the kitty say?.” He will search for a hidden object and is learning that just because he can’t see something it doesn’t mean it’s not there. Socially, baby is becoming very independent and likes to help when being dressed. She will repeat sounds or gestures when someone laughs at her and she knows when her parents approve or disapprove of her behaviours. Baby is interested in other children and babies and distinguishes herself from others. Comfort, play with and teach your child by providing the appropriate motor and sensory stimulation. Turn everyday routines into playful moments, adding tickles, giggles and fun interactions. Ask baby for hugs and kisses and use encouraging words such as “Good for you”. Walk with baby while holding his hands and let him practice crawling up steps while supporting him from behind. Use plastic bowls, spoons and containers of different sizes so he can practice stacking things and have fun banging. Take turns doing actions such as clapping and blowing kisses. Get down on the floor with baby and play Hide-and-Seek and games of chase. Snuggle up and read books with your baby while letting him hold the book and turn the pages. Make a book of family photos and talk about these with your baby. Play music and dance, sing songs and do finger plays encouraging baby to move his fingers. Talk about everything you do with baby and put words to his facial expression, “Are you feeling sad?” Most importantly, let your baby know how much you love him and how special he is both through your words and your actions. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Car Keys Luke, our venturesome 14-month-old son, was at my mother-in-law’s house. He was playing with her car keys when the phone rang. After hanging up, my mother-in-law realized that Luke had put the keys down someplace, but she couldn’t find them anywhere. Thinking quickly, she gave him another set of keys. As she pretended not to look, Luke toddled around the corner and into her bedroom. Then she watched as he carefully placed the second set of keys under her bed—right next to the original car keys.

Strawberries There was a time when the strawberry was thought to be an aphrodisiac. Folklore said that if you cut a double strawberry in half and share it with a member of the opposite sex, you will fall in love with each other. Wedding banquets in France made sure to serve strawberry-based soup to the newlyweds. For over two thousand years, people in Europe have been eating strawberries. This red berry is a member of the rose family. This is the only fruit that has seeds on the outside. Depending on the size and type, each strawberry can have as many as two hundred seeds. There are four main types that strawberries are grouped into for growing: 1) June Bearing – Produces one crop in midsummer with larger fruit and more flowers and runners than all other types. 2) Day Neutral – Fruits several times a season. 3) Ever Bearing – Has a crop in summer and one in the fall. 4) Alpine – Sprouts marble sized edible berries throughout the summer. Strawberries can be found in almost every part of North America. They are very easy to cultivate. Strawberries need a few things to be successful in growing: they need space, good sunlight, and well-drained, slightly acidic soil. You will want to prepare the soil by digging in a few inches of manure, compost or peat moss. Some popular methods of planting are to plant in hills and in matted rows. Ever Bearing and Day-Neutral types that have a few runners are best grown using the hill method. Make the mounds or hills approximately three inches high and twelve inches apart on all sides. Set the plants into the hills and spread the roots out. This method is good for a long lasting site or if space is an issue. Using the matted row Page 40

The Newsy Neighbour

method makes for easier cultivation and care. The plants are placed eighteen inches apart and the rows are three to four feet apart. This method works best for June Bearing types; it is also effective if you’re planning to harvest the runners to set new plants. The first year of growth is the most significant. Do not let the June Bearing type have flowers, fruit or runners the first year. Let all the energy go to establishing the roots of the plant. Remove flowers of Ever Bearing and Day-Neutral strawberries until mid summer, allowing flowers to fruit and set in the fall. Remove extra runners from all plant types annually forcing nutrients to the “mother” plant making it stronger for the next year harvest. Strawberry plants have a life cycle of about four to five years, and must be replaced to continue the supply of tasty berries. A good rule of thumb is to replace twenty five percent of your plants annually, starting in the third year. Using plastic netting over the top of the strawberry patch will discourage the birds from getting the berries before you do. Plants need about an inch of water each week and should be mulched to help hold in the moisture, water in the morning. If you find there is a bug problem you can use insecticidal soap, and spray thoroughly. Strawberries are one of the most popular fruits. They are used in pies, jams, ice cream, cakes, etc. They are good for your complexion and full of vitamins. So have fun with growing them and enjoy eating them.

New Generation Decks are the Latest Trend in Outdoor Living Are you planning on travel for your summer vacation? Thanks to the rising cost of oil, this summer many Canadians will be staying close to home rather than purchasing expensive plane tickets or spending a small fortune on a road trip. Instead, people are expected to invest in upgrades to their outdoor living space at home. Among the projects expected to be popular are landscaping, adding water features and if there isn’t one already, adding a deck. Fortunately, those being built today are a lot more advanced than the decks a lot of people remember from their youth. They are easier to take care of, and made of superior materials that are designed to last a long time. One of the most popular lines in Decking and Railing these days is a wood-thermoplastic composite material made from a mix of recycled wood fiber and post-industrial high-density polyethylene, and www.thenewsyneighbour.com

appears natural in both look and feel. They have a reversible brushed/woodgrain finish and come in a variety of lengths and colours. Colour is added to the mixture during the manufacturing process, bonding it to the boards so they won’t fade, crack or peel. Make sure to ask whoever you get to build your new deck this year about the new options available.

The Newsy Neighbour

Bathing Suit Shopping I have just been through the annual pilgrimage of torture and humiliation known as buying a bathing suit. Back in the 1940’s and 1950’s, the bathing suit for a woman with a mature figure was designed for a woman with a mature figure - boned, trussed and reinforced, not so much sewn as engineered. They were built to hold back and uplift and they did a good job. Today’s stretch fabrics are designed for the prepubescent girl with a figure carved from a potato chip. The mature woman has a choice - she can either front up at the maternity department and try on a floral suit with a skirt, coming away looking like a hippopotamus who escaped from Disney’s Fantasia - or she can wander around every run-of-the-mill department store trying to make a sensible choice from what amounts to a designer range of fluorescent rubber bands. What choice did I have? I wandered around, made my sensible choice and entered the chamber of horrors known as the fitting room. The first thing I noticed was the extraordinary tensile strength of the stretch material. The Lycra used in bathing costumes was developed, I believe, by NASA to launch small rockets from a slingshot, which give the added bonus that if you manage to actually lever yourself into one, you are protected from shark attacks. The reason for this is that any shark taking a swipe at your passing midriff would immediately suffer whiplash. I fought my way into the bathing suit, but as I twanged the shoulder strap in place, I gasped in horror - my bosom had disappeared! Eventually, I found one bosom cowering under my left armpit. It took a while to find the other. At last I located it flattened beside my seventh rib. The problem is that modern bathing suits have no bra cups. The mature woman is meant to wear her bosom spread across her chest like a speed bump. I realigned my speed bump and lurched toward the mirror to take a full view assessment. The bathing suit fit all right, but unfortunately, it only fit those bits of me willing to stay inside it. The rest of me oozed out rebelliously from top, bottom, and sides. I looked like a lump of play dough wearing undersized cling wrap. As I tried to work out where all those extra bits had come from, the prepubescent sales girl popped her head through the curtains, “Oh There you are!” she said, admiring the bathing suit...I replied that I wasn’t so sure and asked what else she had to show me. I tried on a cream crinkled one that made me look like a lump of masking tape, and a floral two piece which gave the appearance of an oversized napkin in a serviette ring. I struggled into a pair of leopard skin bathers with ragged frill and came out looking like Tarzan’s Jane pregnant with triplets and having a rough day. I tried on a black number with a midriff and looked like a jellyfish in mourning. I tried on a bright pink pair with such a high cut leg I thought I would have to wax my eyebrows to wear them. Finally, I found a suit that fit...a two piece affair with shorts style bottom and a loose blouse-type top. It was cheap, comfortable, and bulge friendly, so I bought it. When I got home, I read the label which said “Material may become transparent in water.” I’m determined to wear it anyway.....I’ll just have to learn to do the breaststroke in the sand. ~ Author Unknown www.thenewsyneighbour.com

IMPORTANT ALERT FOR ALL DOG OWNERS It’s tough to find a contaminant when you don’t know what you’re looking for. But that doesn’t mean FDA isn’t trying hard to figure out why chicken jerky pet treats from China seem to be making so many dogs seriously ill. ALERT Vets warn of new treats from China poisoning dogs. Despite repeated warnings issued by the FDA, veterinarians are reporting new cases of dogs developing symptoms of kidney failure (Fanconi’s syndrome) similar to dogs who have been poisoned by Chinese-made chicken jerky treats, but this time they are being poisoned with a whole new class of treats: sweet potato treats imported from China. It is important to remember that although the type of treat most often mentioned in the press is described as a jerky treat, the treats may also be called by a myriad of other names such as stix, chips, poppers, tenders, drumettes, kabob’s, strips, fries, lollipops, twists, wraps, bars, tops and discs (I wish I was making this up). The report goes on to say that there is speculation the problems may also extend to pork treats and cat treats

Fish Oil Helps Keep Your Dogs and Cats Healthy Omega 3 fatty acids are among the most commonly used nutritional supplements used in treating pets. Veterinarians first used omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oil to treat canine and feline allergies but now recommend it for a wide variety of conditions ranging from kidney disease to arthritis and high cholesterol. Adding fish oil to your pet’s food provides anti-inflammatory effects, can help relieve itching and scratching, and allergy-related skin conditions. In research studies, fish oil has shown positive benefits in helping pets with disease. Fortunately, they have been used successfully long enough that most conventional veterinarians include their usage in the treatment of at least some diseases. Though some pet diets may include Omega-3 fatty acids, virtually none include satisfactory amounts of the most important Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. Omega 3 oils support heart, vision and joint health, provide important nutrients for proper immune function, and nourish the skin and coat. First suggested for use in treating allergies in pets, they are now advocated in cases of kidney disease, elevated cholesterol, and arthritis as well. Fish oil supplementation may be helpful for pets with inflammatory diseases including allergies, arthritis, kidney disease, heart disease, and cancers. In general, more severe disease requires doses higher than those commonly recommended. Fish oil is very effective in some pets with allergies and skin disease. It is easy to administer (via gel caps or liquid) and can reduce the amount of corticosteroid or antihistamine needed to control itching. Most pets take either form well. For pets that are difficult to “pill,” the liquid form is quite popular. Owners of dogs and cats 20 pounds and under find the liquid form more cost effective than the large bottle of fatty acid capsules. The response is variable in other diseases (such as kidney disease) but fish oil appears effective in research studies. In pets with some types of cancer, fish oil has slowed down the growth and spread of the cancer. While more studies are needed on other types of cancer, the general recommendation is to add fish oil to the diets of all pets with cancer. As with other supplements, the use of fatty acids often allows doctors to lower the dosages of drugs such as corticosteroids or antihistamines. Choosing a high quality Omega-3 fish oil supplement with exceptional purity and freshness, as well as, high levels of Omega-3s is key to supporting pet health. The Newsy Neighbour

The New Teacher A former Sergeant in the Marine Corps took a new job as a high school teacher. Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body. Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn’t noticeable. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart aleck punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former Marine, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom. Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest. Dead silence. He had no trouble with discipline the rest of the year.

Whats 50 Bucks? Lost Car

After shopping at a busy store, another woman and I happened to leave at the same time, only to be faced with the daunting task of finding our cars in the crowded parking lot. Just then, my car horn beeped, and I was able to locate my vehicle easily. “Wow,” the woman said. “I sure could use a gadget like that to help me find my car.” “Actually,” I replied. “That’s my husband.”

As an airline reservation agent, I took a call from a man who wanted to book a flight for two but wasn’t happy with the price of $259 per ticket. “I want the $249 fare I saw advertised,” he insisted, saying he would accept a flight at any time. I managed to find two seats on a 6 a.m. flight. “I’ll take it,” he said, then worried his wife might not like the early hour. I warned there was a $25 fee per person if he changed the reservation. “Oh, that’s no problem,” he said dismissively. “What’s fifty bucks?”

Spring Cleaning

Appliances aren’t really a big item on the spring cleaning list. They pretty much either work or don’t work. There are a couple of checks we can do on some appliances that may make our life easier (possibly even less expensive unless you are independently wealthy and like service calls). The fridge. With a potential for hotter weather, (it is Alberta), fridges definitely work harder. Maintenance-wise, a big favour to the fridge is to make sure the condenser is clean & free from fluff, pet hair, etc. A blocked condenser can make a fridge unable to cool, run much longer and cause excessive wear on other (expensive) components. Gently cleaning the condenser with a brush and crevice tool on a vacuum cleaner can make a huge difference to the fridge operation and your wallet. Always ensure the fridge is off (no power) before cleaning the condenser. Your independent appliance retailer should be able to supply a condenser cleaning brush and/or a vacuum attachment built for this job. This is also a good time to check the fridge door seal. Even a small gap can cost in energy savings as refrigerated air escapes into the room. One way to check is to run a $5.00 bill along between the door seal and the fridge with the door closed. You should not be able to easily do it. As always, don’t overload the fridge and pre-cool unopened beverages by storing them in the basement prior to putting them in the fridge. Laundry. Check the water supply hoses on your washing machine. Look for any bulges or weak spots. It is recommended to change supply hoses every five years or have burst resistant hoses which can be good for a longer period of time. Next would be the dryer venting. If your dryer seems hot and runs OK but takes much longer to dry, the venting or a blocked lint screen may be the culprits. Good air flow in unobstructed venting is critical in safe, economical drying operations. If your vent is very obstructed, it may be a safe plan to clean & service the dryer. Lint-based dryer fires are much too common. Generally, unless there is a change in the appliance’s operation or unusual noises that may require service, major appliance manufacturer’s use & care guides explain what little maintenance is required. Be aware and wary of the marketing of almost magical devices or treatments to make your appliances work better. Some are manufacturer approved and some are mainly designed to separate your wallet and its contents. Under the very interesting reading and awareness enhancement categories, try: www.senseaboutscience.org and secondly, check out a book “Celebrity…” by Marina Hyde. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

CLARITY I’m a life-and-career coach and one morning, when a prospective client called for an appointment, I asked him what he wanted to get out of our sessions. “Clarity,” he said very firmly. “And on what issues are you looking for clarity?” I probed. “Well,” he said in a less confident tone, “I really don’t know.”

Senior e-Mail Virus VIRUS ALERT! The new Virus called the Senile Virus is infecting many computers owned by people over 50 years old!! Symptoms of the virus are as follows: • Causes you to send same e-mail twice. • Causes you to send blank e-mail. • Causes you to send e-mail to wrong person. • Causes you to send e-mail back to person who sent it to you. • Causes you to forget to attach the attachments to e-mail. • Causes you to hit “SEND” before you’ve finished There is no known cure for this virus (but at least you now have an excuse) I know people who are not Seniors with this same Virus!!!!!

Questions to Ponder On electric toasters, why do they engrave the message ‘one slice’? How many pieces of bread do they think people are really gonna try to stuff in that slot? Why do people keep running over a string a dozen times with their vacuum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, examine it, then put it down to give their vacuum one more chance? Why is it that no plastic garbage bag will open from the end you first try? Considering all the lint you get in your dryer, if you kept drying your clothes would they eventually just disappear? www.thenewsyneighbour.com

The founder of several book and web-based publishing companies, he is a past president of the Book Publishers Association of Alberta, and a former member of the national council of the Association of Canadian Publishers. He has guided hundreds of writers through the publishing process, and is himself an author – his latest work, the wry Man Up in Ten Lessons will be released in May 2012. He is the publisher of The Newsy Neighbour’s “I Am A… Series”. If I had to whittle down all my very best advice to wouldbe authors to a single line, it’d probably be this: Wake up & smell the coffee – it’s the 21st century! Johannes Gutenberg started this whole publishing thing over 500 years ago. Let’s be clear: his goal wasn’t to create books, per se. His goal was to get some information (in this case a Bible written in something other than Latin) out to as many people as possible. So he created a startling new technology, known as mechanical movable type, that allowed him to do that. No more hand-copying manuscripts for the inventive Gutenberg, no siree. He could now crank out (literally) dozens of copies of the same page, bind them together, and in the process create something that could reach hundreds, then thousands, then hundreds of thousands of readers. The object that made this possible became known, in English, as the book. And the underlying technology that made books possible allowed a new industry to be born – the publishing industry, also known as “the book trade,” one that has ticked along fairly comfortably for centuries. In fact, it’s been chugging away, minding its own (and your) business for so long, we’ve largely forgotten a fundamental truth: in the end, it’s what’s inside that counts! A book is, after all, nothing more than an object, a form, a physical means of delivering someone else’s idea and creativity (or lack thereof) to us, in a fairly convenient manner. Oh sure, it’s an object most of us grew up with, one that many of us have become very fond of (I personally love books; if you do, too, check out this charming, Academy-Award-winning, 15-minute-long animated film, called The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore: www.youtube.com/watch?tv=Adzywe9xeIU&feature=sh a -- make sure you have a box of Kleenex close by). But now a new technology has come along – the web – that makes Gutenberg’s movable type, even with all the refinements that have rippled through the printing www.thenewsyneighbour.com

industry over the centuries, pale. The fact is, books are increasingly expensive, both to make and buy. They cost a lot to ship. And often the information they contain is obsolete the day before they’re published. Publishers are going out of business. Bookstores are disappearing like buffalo from the prairies. And yet – and here’s the irony – there are more people writing more manuscripts today than ever before in human history, including, I know this for a fact, some of you reading this! Obviously, something has to give, something has to change if all these manuscripts are going to find an audience. It’s OK to love books. Like I said, I do. But if you’ve got a novel on the go, a memoir or biography, a how-to or self-help tome, or have a children’s novel or a cookbook twinkling in your eye, remember, it’s the 21st century! Start learning something about ebooks, enhanced ebooks, ePub, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Kindle Publishing, Apple’s iPub… you’ll be glad you did. I’m Fine A farmer named Clyde had a car accident. In court, the trucking company’s fancy lawyer was questioning Clyde. “Didn’t you say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine,’?” asked the lawyer. Clyde responded, “Well, I’ll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite mule, Bessie...” “I didn’t ask for any details”, the lawyer interrupted. “Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, ‘I’m fine!’?” Clyde said, “Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...” The lawyer interrupted again and said, “Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman that he was just fine. Now, several weeks after the accident, he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question.” By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Clyde’s answer and said to the lawyer, “I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favourite mule, Bessie”. Clyde thanked the Judge and proceeded. “Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favourite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting, real bad and didn’t want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident, a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her, and saw her fatal condition, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes. Then the Patrolman came across the road, gun still in hand, looked at me and said, ‘How are you feeling?’ Now, what would you say?” www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Dear Lifelines: So what happened to holding the door open for people? Signed, Door in my Face Dear Face, Civility is defined on Dictionary.com as “courtesy; politeness” or “a polite action or expression.” Some days it seems that civility has fallen by the wayside. Just a couple of days ago I literally had to run across a roadway in a Chapters parking lot lest be mowed over by an impatient driver. Then I was promptly cut off in traffic and nearly t-boned at an intersection. This was not a stellar day for me. However, in discussions with others, it seems the consensus is that although people say Calgary is very civilized compared to larger centres like Toronto or Vancouver, as the population grows, civility appears to be decreasing. Maybe in order to increase the feelings of contentment with each other in our ever-growing communities, it might be worth examining our own selves and making changes there in order to help promote kindness and civility in others. I have friends who routinely purchase coffee for the car behind them in the morning coffee lineup. I know others who do various things to help add kindness in people’s lives. They mow or shovel their neighbour’s lawns, volunteer regularly, make meals for those experiencing personal set-backs, always hold doors open, bring coffee over to those who can’t get out easily and so on... Having been on the receiving end of these acts of kindness, I can vouch for the fact that it really puts a positive spin on the day and makes me want to go out of my way to help others as well. A project started in Calgary that would be a worthwhile addition for our smaller rural communities is the ‘3 Things for Calgary’ concept. In this concept there are Page 50

three steps they request we fulfill: #1. Reflect on the following questions: • What am I good at? • What do I care about? • What do I have to say about it? #2. Take 3 minutes to write three sentences in response to those questions and then talk to 3 friends about what you wrote. #3. Visit 3thingsforcalgary.ca There are a multitude of ideas and projects that could be pursued. If it’s something that you actually enjoy doing and promoting – here comes your new pastime! You might even increase the civility of your own family members by working on a project that your child or spouse is passionate about. It could be a project inspired by a loved one who has passed or it could have a historical focus incorporating something in your ancestral lineage or have historical significance in the area or community that you live in. By getting involved you become engaged with other community members and share your energy and knowledge. By making time for others, your passion might spill over to other members who want to carry your vision even further. You might want to introduce your idea to schools, groups or even Kijiji and other community posting forums. Although I realize you had a jolting moment with nobody holding the door open for you that particular day, I’m hoping there are many other examples that you can reflect on when there was someone in your day that went that extra mile for you. However, even when you feel it cannot be considered a full mile, maybe we could still celebrate the inches. Let us know if you start a ‘3things’ project! Lifelines

Monthly Book Review by Derek Donais My review column is in its second year with the Newsy Neighbour. Please continue to join me each month as I explore a new read. I’ve had the opportunity to review worthwhile books by many local or regional Canadian authors, as well as some great international works. As always, my passions are fantasy and sciencefiction, but I am always on the lookout for more non-fiction, especially from local writers. I hope to build on the many bright spots and successes of 2011. MetalMagic: Talisman, the revised Canadian edition, was released in November, 2011 and I’m happy to announce that the sequel, MetalMagic: Revelation, should be available sometime in February, 2012. Thanks to all those who’ve supported the Newsy Neighbour and read my reviews over the last little while—and here’s to another year filled with promise! Yours in Truth, Derek Donais

Captives

Barbara Galler-Smith and Josh Langston Edge Publishing, 2011 Trade Paperback, 335 pages ISBN: 9781894063531

Captives is book two in the Druids Saga trilogy and continues the stories of the two Celts, Rhonwen, a Driad healer, and Mallec, a Druid seer. Things have not gone well for Rhonwen. Her dealings with the Romans have cast her into slavery along with her uncle Orlan, Mallec’s teacher and mentor. She is filled with hatred for her former master, Quintus Sertorius, and his lieutenant, Perpenna Vento, and vows to avenge the suffering she and others have endured as a result of their actions. For Druid Mallec, on the other hand, the gods have delivered both good and bad fortune. He has become the respected spiritual leader of his people—Master of Eban Enclave—but this position brings its share of difficulties; bad omens and the disfavour of the gods overshadow his clan as their troubles multiply. It is left to Druid Mallec to discover the source of their problems and restore the peoples’ faith. Rhonwen’s situation goes from bad to worse as she’s transported to Rhodes and sold to yet another master. Along the way, she is forced to endure further at the hands of others, which hardens her heart and twists her mind ever more toward revenge. Her list of those deserving justice grows with time. The cruel and cunning Driad Deirdre conspires to deliver Mallec into the hands of slavers, too. She replaces him as Mistress of the enclave and imposes her strict will on the people. Still strangers to each other, slaves Rhonwen and Mallec must overcome enormous odds to free themselves and find each other. Mallec has been given a vision of Rhonwen in a dream; but will they meet in time to reverse their misfortunes and return home, where the clans suffer in their absence? Scotus and Aurrok, vile, slave-dealing merchants, and Deirdre and her equally ambitious son, Caradowc, provide plenty of evil deeds and scheming that draw the reader in and makes rooting for the heroes a must. Captives is truly more and more captivating as you delve deeper into the story. It’s an historical fiction that delivers action, suspense and romance, and fully lives up to the excellence established by the authors in the first book. “...Then I swear...by all that lives and breathes, by the stars, and by my own red blood, if you harm him, I’ll fulfill my own curse. I will hunt you down, in this world or the next, and have my vengeance.” —Driad Rhonwen Page 52

In delivering his ruling, the judge stated that since the man held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable, and also guaranteed that it would insure the cigars against fire, without defining what it considered to be “unacceptable fire,” it was obligated to compensate the insured for his loss. Rather than endure a lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the judge’s ruling and paid the man $15,000 for the rare cigars he lost in “the fires.”

In his claim, the man stated that he had lost the cigars in “a series of small fires.” The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed the cigars in a normal fashion. The man sued... and won!

Retirement It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there’s nothing worse than an oversensitive woman. My name is Ron. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife, Carol Anne. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Carol Anne to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed. Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work. Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don’t yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men’s Grill at the club, so eating out is not reasonable. I’m ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door. She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it’s not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won’t clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she Page 56

goes to bed. Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, boys, we take ‘em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won’t have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn’t hurt her any (if you know what I mean). I like to think tact is one of my strong points. When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the yard. I try not to make a scene. I’m a fair man. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too. I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Carol Anne. I’m not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other. Signed, Ron www.thenewsyneighbour.com

WHAT’S QUIRKY IN THE WORLD TODAY? Many strange and unexplained events have taken place in history. People have made discoveries and witnessed bizarre phenomenon’s. Many historical stories have been tainted with legend and falsification. It is interesting to learn about some of the world’s most bizarre events, people, and locations. It’s things like the Cinnamon Challenge that strengthen my belief that people will do the dumbest things if they think it’s cool. Because, who in their right mind would want to stuff their face with a tablespoon full of cinnamon just for fun? The answer – thousands. And would you believe the Governor of Illinois is one of them? Yep, Gov. Pat Quinn took in a spoonful of that stuff on air, in response to a challenge. He followed his act with the words, “The will of the people. The law of the land.” I don’t know about you, but I’d think twice before giving him my vote. Right now, there are over 30,000 videos on YouTube tagged ‘Cinnamon Challenge’. The most popular ones have millions of views. The Cinnamon Challenge is basically a dare to swallow a spoonful of cinnamon in powdered form, without water. It’s the latest rage and it has gone beyond viral. The challenge itself has been around for years, but the sudden spike in its popularity remains unexplained. It seems like a simple thing to do; just swallow the stuff and be done with it. In reality, however, it isn’t all that easy. The problem with cinnamon is that it does not break down easily. So the chances of it getting stuck in the throat are pretty high, causing gagging and even vomiting.

Doctors have said that this could be very dangerous, because cinnamon can also prevent air from entering the lungs, which could lead to lung inflammation. Listen to this! Renting out body parts seems to be a trend that’s catching on fast. We first heard of it when it was used by a New Zealand woman on her backside, and then there was a German man who tried to rent out his face for tattooed ads. The latest to join the bandwagon are a couple of British 22-year-olds, Ross Harper and Ed Moyse. Unlike the others, however, they aren’t using tattoos. Their concept, called Buy My Face, is to sell their faces to a different ad campaign every day, which are painted on using face paint. The boys are trying to raise enough money to pay off their student debts, which amount to £50,000 ($80,000). So far, they’ve managed to make £30,000 ($47,000). The goal of Buy My Face isn’t only to get people to look at the advertisements that are printed on their faces. The advertising extends onto their website, which works by directing online traffic to the advertiser’s web page. Harper and Moyse paint ads on their faces and then photograph or film themselves doing funny things. Advertisers can pay for them to do several stunts, such as skydiving or plunging into cold waters. All this is put up on the website, along with the name of the day’s advertiser. When the duo started off on October 1st, their first ad went for exactly £1. But they’ve managed to sell their faces every single day since then, and today the rates have moved up to £400 a day.

My husband and I love the Newsy Neighbour. We really enjoy the wonderful little jokes and stories that are throughout the magazine. Every issue we find ourselves laughing and later cutting them out to share with friends or family. Often we save them until Christmas and include the little funny clippings in our Christmas cards. We love the advertising from local retailers, especially when they have sales or promotions going on, as we often don’t hear about them until seeing them in the Newsy Neighbour. Being on a budget, we of course love when advertisers add little coupons to their ads; it really goes a long way with us. Thanks for providing them with the opportunity to advertise and allow us to shop locally. Keep up the great work and please enter us in your wonderful contest. Happy birthday, Newsy Neighbour! BBQ Season After four long months of cold and winter, we are finally coming up to spring and BBQ season! Therefore, it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this outdoor cooking ritual, as it’s the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved. When a man volunteers to do the BBQ, the following chain of events are put into motion: 1. The woman buys the food. 2. The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert. 3. The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand. Here comes the important part: 4. THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL. Then: 5. The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery. 6. The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation. Important again: 7. THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. 8. The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table. 9. After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all: 10. Everyone PRAISES THE MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts. 11. The man asks the woman how she enjoyed “her night off” and, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there’s just no pleasing some women!

Wheels of Life ~ Our Magnetic Energy System Every single day more and more people get to know about the chakras. Though the science of chakras was previously associated with Indian traditional medicine, it is now noted that almost all races and people from different backgrounds are using them to improve their lives. Chakras can simply be defined as energy points in the body of human beings. There are various ways of using these chakras. Some people make use of them through performing yoga, others by mantra chanting or meditation. Chakra is derived from the Sanskrit language. In the traditional Indian medicine, it is believed that the living beings body contains wheel-like vortices. These vortices can also be called energy centers through which energy flows in our body. The body’s energy is supposed to be flowing all the time, failure of energy flow leads to illnesses. To keep the free flow of the body energy, one will need to have a proper understanding of chakras.

The main 7 chakras The first most important chakra is the Root chakra. This chakra is highly rated on the list because it is responsible for survival and basic needs. This chakra is found at the base of spine. When this chakra is not in balance you feel insecure, unsupported, unsafe and unhappy. Then the Sacral Chakra follows. This one is located in the lower abdomen just under the navel. It deals with issues of sexuality, abundance sense, accuracy, well being and pleasure. The Solar Plexus chakra comes third. This chakra is found in the upper abdomen around the stomach area. It gives us the ability to take control of our lives. It deals with issues of self worth, self confidence and self esteem. The negative characteristics associated with the Solar Plexus chakra is greed and fear. In the fourth place is the Heart chakra. The heart chakra deals with the ability to love which includes gentleness, joy, adoring and healing at the same time. Though love is on the positive side, its negative side includes laziness and passivity. This chakra is situated just above the heart at the center of the human chest. Throat chakra is the fifth and is above the heart chakra. The throat chakra is right in the throat. It deals with our communication abilities which include expression of our feelings and telling the truth. The Third eye chakra is the second last. This is also known as the brow chakra due to its location. It is located in the forehead, between the eyes but slightly above the eyes. It deals with the ability to think and make decisions, wisdom, concentration and imagination. It is also responsible for arrogance and pride. Crown chakra comes last though not the least. This represents our spiritual connectivity. It is found on the head top. It is responsible for both the inner and outer beauty. These 7 Chakras can be used to balance your life in order to live a more peaceful, relaxed and happy life.
