After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

Following the meal were the award presentations, with Newsy Team Aleesha Gosling and Denise Geremia opened the night with a comedic script, that even included rapping and acknowledgement of past Awards mistakes. The room roared with laughter, and not only with the laughing sound clip on Denise’s phone. Next, local MLA Leela Sharon Aheer came up to speak and express her gratitude to local business owners for stepping out of their comfort zone and making a difference. Ms. Aheer then presented the first award, followed by Aleesha and Denise tag-teaming the next 20 awards. The girls announced the category, the Gold winner, and as the winner came up to accept their award, Silver and Bronze winners were called out. Those in attendance came up to accept their much-deserved certificates and thanked for their hard work, all while local photographer Amalia Zarakostas clicked photos and allowed each winner a much-deserved moment in the spotlight.

Awards 2017-2018

The Readers’ Choice Best in Business Awards Show Recognizing a Year’s Worth of Local Business Excellence

The stage was set; the honourees were in attendance, the crystal trophies glittered, all lined up and ready to be presented to deserving businesses and individuals – it was the 2018 Readers’ Choice Best in Business Awards! Reducing the number of awards from 80 last year to 45 this year, more than 30 tables at the Strathmore Legion housed the brightest entrepreneurs and business owners from Strathmore, Langdon and Chestermere areas. The décor of twinkling lights and red candles, provided by local events coordinator Creative Events, extravagantly lit up the room and painted the picture of what the night would entail. Wine glasses clinked, competing business owners networked, and friendships were made in the light of the Photo Booth provided by Pulse Entertainment A silent auction was set up at the back of the room, with all items and prizes donated by local businesses and monies collected being donated to the local Youth Club of Strathmore. While attendees were checking out the items for bid, local Langdon musician Glenn Baker and his band High Steppin’ Daddy entertained guest with their superb talent and presence. On the other end of the hall, The Strathmore Legion was serving up refreshments at the best prices in town. Newsy Team Aleesha Gosling and Denise Geremia opened the night with a comedic script, that even included rapping and acknowl-

In all, the 2018 Reader’s Choice Best in Business Awards Show was an unmitigated, absolute success. The performances were great, everyone present was in high spirits, and some great photobooth photos were taken to remember the night. More than that, though, is what the Awards Show did for the community. Once again, it brought business owners and entrepreneurs together from all industries and walks of life to celebrate what makes Chestermere, Langdon, and Strathmore so great. It shone a bright spotlight on local commerce, and reminded everyone that the hard work and long hours they had put into their businesses had paid off, and that the community recognized them for their efforts and everything they’d worked hard at over the past year. Lastly – and perhaps, a little selfishly – it gave us at The Newsy Neighbour a chance to communicate, face-to-face, how much love and respect we have for each and every reader of our magazine, and to thank all of the people and businesses who make what we do possible. On behalf of The Newsy Neighbour, we’d like to extend our deepest thanks to everyone in Chestermere, Langdon, and Strathmore for making the 2018 Readers’ Choice Best in Business Awards a smashing success. We couldn’t have done it without you. A special thank you to Hayley Poirier for her spur-of-the-moment acknowledgement on stage for all the hard work we put into the event, and while we don’t do it for praise or thanks, it was very appreciated. Congratulations once more to all the award winners and nominees – we can’t wait to do it again next year!

A Special Thank You! Town of Strathmore, Strathmore Chamber of Commerce, City of Chestermere, Chestermere Chamber of Commerce, Langdon Community Association, Langdon Chamber of Commerce, The Strathmore Legion and all the staff, Karri Geiger for your all your last minute help, Amalia Zarokostas Photography for the beautiful photos, Pulse Entertainment for the Photo Booth, High Steppin Daddy for the fabulous Music, Phoenix Signs & Graphics for the Awards, Indus Graphics for all the certificates and all the incredible businesses that donated to the silent auction and helped us raise money for the Strathmore Youth Club! 9 Little Things Couples Who Last Do Differently Than Those Who Break Up

There's no perfect recipe for a successful relationship, but there are a few habits experts say can lead to more lasting relationships. For inspiration, you can just look at the little things couples who last longer do differently than those who end up splitting, and by learning from these habits, you might find that you have better relationship success. You don't need to change who you are to stick with your partner — you just need to find better ways to make things work in a relationship. "Long-term relationships require effort because love evolves from a passionate and intense initial feeling to a more stable and secure one," therapist

Ana M. Aluisy, MA, LMHC, LMFT tells Bustle. "This latter [relationship] is vulnerable to routine and monotony, which leads to the initial passion and intensity to fade away. In addition, in order for relationships to last we have to make a conscious choice to place our commitment and the relationship above others and even ourselves at times. It's not about being right and proving the other wrong. It's about choosing the relationship." If you want to make it in the long run with your partner, you'll want to engage in these nine little things experts say long-lasting couples do differently.

They Set Aside Time For Each Other

There's nothing like good old quality time, and couples that stay together go the extra mile to spend time together. "Spending one-on-one time, without friends or other family members, allows for intimate moments to continue to be built in our positive memory bank," says Aluisy. "It also makes individuals feel special to have undivided attention."

They Take Responsibility For Their Themselves

Couples that stick together take responsibility not only for their actions, but for their own personal, professional, and spiritual happiness. "Each person understands that although relationships are an important part of life, healthy people don’t put all of their eggs in one happiness basket," clinical psychologist Traci Stein, PhD, MPH tells Bustle. "They seek other types of satisfaction, such as at work, in friendships, and the like."

They Agree To Disagree

When you book as a couple.

You're not always going to have the same opinion as your partner, and that's OK. "It's important to show respect for differences of opinions or beliefs," says Aluisy. "This is a great way to show acceptance even with conflicting views."

A happy, long-lasting couple will make an extra effort to work on issues that come up. "Trying to repair or make up for past mistake shows efforts that one cares about the other's feelings and is willing to accommodate in an effort to avoid hurting their partner," says Aluisy.

expect their partner to be equally agreeable, interesting, or attractive to them all the time, says Stein. Instead, they understand that their partner will sometimes have a bad day, and will be there to offer support when needed.

They Get Out Together

Everyone's relationships are different, but follow these simple tricks, and experts say you might find that your relationship becomes a bit easier.

Couples who stick together find a good balance between staying inside and going outdoors. "Getting away from [your usual] space provides an opportunity to focus on each other," psychologist and sexologist Barbara Winter, Ph.D, PAtells Bustle. Plus, you get to feel healthier at the same time!

They Nurture A Common Project

"People in longer-term relationships share a common goal, whether it be renovating their home, having a side-business as a couple, or leading a fundraiser," says Winter. "Projects are important for many reasons. Besides a joint venture, it allows for continued momentum in the relationship."

They Value The Whole Person

A long-lasting relationship goes beyond just physical attraction and having a good time together. "They value the whole person — mind, body, emotions — and understand that their partner is more than just their physical appearance, which will change over time," says Stein.

The Gift of Love Love comes in many forms. Whether it’s from a spouse, brother, sister or even a friend, love is everywhere.

As a matter of fact, love doesn’t always necessarily have to be toward a person or even have a name. It can be towards an animal, a picture, or even a book; love is everywhere! It’s what you feel in your heart. Speaking for myself, I have many loves in my life, but nothing compares to the love that my family and I have towards my soon-to-be niece. I can’t put into words the emotions that we feel. I look forward to the moment I get to hold her for the first time. Heck, I’m here tearing up as I’m writing about her and she’s not even here! It’s amazing what love can do to people. I can honestly say that even though I always knew what love is, nothing compares to the love of a child. The day I found out that I was going to be an uncle was one of the happiest days of my life, and I say that partly because knowing that I’m unable to have kids of my own due to my disability. So, I’m going to embrace this love that God has given my family and say thank you to my sister and her boyfriend for creating this bundle of joy and allowing us to show another meaning of love. I want to dedicate this column to my sister as she prepares to give life to an amazing little girl that happens to be my beautiful niece. Steven Greene

The Love Center:

“The Heart”

February is Heart Month, and it is the month of love. Did you also know that we all have an energy center which vibrates in our bodies call the “heart charka center”? This is our “love center” and pink is the colour associated with it.

Every living thing has many energy centers inside and outside of their bodies, but most of us are only taught about the seven major centers. These centers are one part of your body that makes us how we are. Chakras are just another system helping connect your mind, body and soul in order for them to work together using light energy vibration. The seven major chakras run along your spine. The first chakra is located on the tail bone; the second just below your belly button; the third below the v of the diaphragm; the fourth – the heart chakra, just in the middle of your chest; the fifth in the middle of the throat; the sixth in the middle of your eye brows and last but not least, the seventh chakra is right in the top of your head – as we like to call it the soft spot. Chakras are energy wheels which let light energy in and out of each chakra and also allow the energy to come from the sides of each chakra. February is the ideal month to remember the heart chakra; it is also linked with our lungs, circulatory systems, shoulders, upper back and chest. On an emotional level; it is the center of giving, receiving, relationships, compassion and being loved. There are many ways to help keep this center balanced; through mediation, forgiveness of oneself and others, self-love, receiv-

ing and sharing love, being grounded and present at all times. Living in a state of being grateful for everything around you, just knowing that you are never alone and that you have a purpose in your life. You can help your physical body be the best it can be through exercise, natural and healthy foods, and awareness that everything we do to yourselves affects the chakra centers. We need to take care of ourselves and be mindful of how we think and feel on a positive note; it helps these centers stay in balance. By not caring for our mental, physical, emotional, spiritual and financial levels these chakras become unbalanced and that is when we get a sign that things are not right! Go do something important today and show yourself and others how much you genuinely love and care. If you strive to do this every month your heart chakra and all the others will be so grateful. CELEBRATING FRIENDSHIPS “Good friends help you find important things when you have lost them… your smile, your hope and your courage.” – Doe Zantamata This month, many couples will be planning ways to express their love for each other on Valentine’s Day. There are sure to be many chocolates and special dinners consumed, flowers and other gifts given, proposals of marriage offered and perhaps even wedding vows renewed. However, love comes in many forms and deep friendships are a form of love that also deserve to be celebrated. Behavioural scientists and psychologists describe a close friendship as one that involves shared moments and a long-lasting bond of sacrifice while the Japanese use a term, Kenzoku, which reflects a deep connection between people. In both cases, there is an understanding that close friends are committed to each other’s happiness and would say what others would not when it is in the best interest of the friend. A true friend would not ever ask you to compromise your principles, they inspire you to be your best and they show up (and stay) during the darkest times without ever being asked. If we are very fortunate, we also have a few extra special friendships during our lifetime. These are the ones that have an attraction factor similar to what that brings two people together romantically and often the friendship was formed very quickly. These friendships feel very familiar, as if you have been friends forever. They are binding, permanent and are grounded in deep trust.

There have been numerous studies done on friendships, some quite interesting. For instance, many studies have repeatedly shown that as we increase in age, friendships play a larger role in our health and happiness than our family relationships. Robin Dunbar, anthropologist and psychologist, determined that the average person is likely to have 150 people in their social network (social friends), 50 close friends, 15 intimate friends and five people that are their close support group or best friends. Sociologists have identified that there are three critical elements needed to make close friends: physical nearness, repeated unscheduled interactions and a setting that encourages people to let down their guard down and confide in each other. Many researchers believe that people make few new friends as they age due to busy schedules, demands of work and family, less free time for pursuing personal interests, set routines that do not involve meeting new people, and fewer social outings. So when you consider the many benefits of having close friends in our lives, it seems that looking for opportunities to develop new friendships is to our advantage and Women Talk is an ideal place to do that. It provides the three key elements identified by sociologists earlier and brings together women in a social setting that is inspiring. For the past two years, Women Talk in Strathmore has given women in our area a place to spend time with their friends and to make new ones after realizing there was a connection to someone who only moments before was a stranger. At the January gathering, our two Talkers shared stories about connecting to others through listening and finding forgiveness in the midst of tragedy. Others spoke of their challenges in 2017 and their intentions for 2018. Amidst all of the sharing was realness, laughter, familiarity and trust… the very things that friendships are made of.

Come help us celebrate the many friendships of Women Talk at our 2nd Anniversary Event on Thursday, February 15th at 7pm at the Strathmore Station. You can book your tickets online at www.womentalk.ca/events, or for those who consider themselves non-savvy with technology, call 403-934-8516 to reserve your seat. Bring a girlfriend or two and make it a great evening to celebrate good friends… old and new. We look forward to seeing you there! MOUTH-WATERING

LOBSTER RECIPES egar, 1 teaspoonful of made mustard, the yolks of 2 eggs; cayenne and salt to taste; 3 teaspoonful of anchovy sauce. These ingredients should be mixed perfectly smooth, and form a creamy-looking sauce.

To boil lobsters

Ingredients:- 1/4 lb. of salt to each gallon of water. Medium-sized lobsters are the best. Have ready a stewpan of boiling water, salted in the above proportion; put in the lobster, and keep it boiling quickly from 20 minutes to 3/4 hour, according to its size, and do not forget to skim well. If it boils too long, the meat becomes thready, and if not done enough, the spawn is not red: this must be obviated by great attention. Hub the shell over with a little butter or sweet oil, which wipe off again. Time. Small lobster, 20 minutes to 1/2 hour; large ditto, 1/2 to 1/3 hour.

Hot lobster Ingredients:- 1 lobster, 2 oz. of butter, grated nutmeg; salt, pepper, and pounded mace, to taste; bread crumbs, 2 eggs. Pound the meat of the lobster to a smooth paste with the butter and seasoning, and add a few bread crumbs. Beat the eggs, and make the whole mixture into the form of a lobster; pound the spawn, and sprinkle over it. Bake 1/4 hour, and just before serving, lay over it the tail and body shell, with the small claws underneath, to resemble a lobster. Time. 1/4 hour.

Lobster salad Ingredients:- 1 hen lobster, lettuces, endive, small salad (whatever is in season), a little chopped beetroot, 2 hard-boiled eggs, a few slices of cucumber. For dressing, equal quantities of oil and vin-

Lobster (a la mode francaise) Ingredients:- 1 lobster, 4 tablespoonfuls of white stock, 2 tablespoonfuls of cream, pounded mace, and cayenne to taste; bread crumbs. Pick the meat from the shell, and cut it up into small square pieces; put the stock, cream, and seasoning into a stewpan, add the lobster, and let it simmer gently for 6 minutes. Serve it in the shell, which must be nicely cleaned, and have a border of puff-paste; cover it with bread crumbs, place small pieces of butter over, and brown before the fire, or with a salamander. Time. 1/4 hour.

Lobster curry Ingredients:- 1 lobster, 2 onions, 1 oz. butter, 1 tablespoonful of curry-powder, 1/2 pint of medium stock, the juice of 1/2 lemon. Pick the meat from the shell, and cut it into nice square pieces; fry the onions of a pale brown in the butter, stir in the curry-powder and stock, and simmer till it thickens, when put in the lobster; stew the whole slowly for 1/2 hour, and stir occasionally; and just before sending to table, put in the lemon-juice. Serve boiled rice with it, the same as for other curries. Time. Altogether, 3/4 hour.

RECIPES 18 •

Wash the salad, and thoroughly dry it by shaking it in a cloth. Cut up the lettuces and endive, pour the dressing on them, and lightly throw in the small salad. Mix all well together with the pickings from the body of the lobster; pick the meat from the shell, cut it up into nice square pieces, put half in the salad, the other half reserve for garnishing. Separate the yolks from the whites of 2 hard-boiled eggs; chop the whites very fine, and rub the yolks through a sieve, and afterwards the coral from the inside. Arrange the salad lightly on a glass dish, and garnish, first with a row of sliced cucumber, then with the pieces of lobster, the yolks and whites of the eggs, coral, and beetroot placed alternately, and arranged in small separate bunches, so that the colours contrast nicely. Note. A few crayfish make a pretty garnishing to lobster salad.

Lobster cutlets Ingredients:- 1 large hen lobster, 1 oz. fresh butter, 1/2 saltspoonful of salt, pounded mace, grated nutmeg, cayenne and white pepper to taste, egg, and bread crumbs. Pick the meat from the shell, and pound it in a mortar with the butter, and gradually add the mace and seasoning, well mixing the ingredients; beat all to a smooth paste, and add a little of the spawn; divide the mixture into pieces of an equal size, and shape them like cutlets. They should not be very thick. Brush them over with egg, and sprinkle with bread crumbs, and stick a short piece of the small claw in the top of each; fry them of a nice brown in boiling lard, and drain them before the fire, on a sieve reversed; arrange them nicely on a dish, and pour bechamel in the middle, but not over the cutlets. Time. About 8 minutes after the cutlets are made.

Lobster patties Ingredients:- Minced lobster, 4 tablespoonfuls of bechamel, 6 drops of anchovy sauce, lemon-juice, cayenne to taste. Line the patty-pans with puff-paste, and put into each a small piece of bread: cover with paste, brush over with egg, and bake of a light colour. Take as much lobster as is required, mince the meat very fine, and add the above ingredients; stir it over the fire for 6 minutes; remove the lids of the patty-cases, take out the bread, fill with the mixture, and replace the covers.

Ingredients:- 2 lobsters; seasoning to taste, of nutmeg, pounded mace, white pepper, and salt; 1/4 lb. of butter, 3 or 4 bay-leaves. Mode:- Take out the meat carefully from the shell, but do not cut it up. Put some butter at the bottom of a dish, lay in the lobster as evenly as possible, with the bay-leaves and seasoning between. Cover with butter, and bake for 3/4 hour in a gentle oven. When done, drain the whole on a sieve, and lay the pieces in potting-jars, with the seasoning about them. When cold, pour over it clarified butter, and, if very highly seasoned, it will keep some time. Time. 3/4 hour.

You will quickly find that these birds extremely smart and their ability to learn make them fun to train. Keep in mind that any animal that shows signs of high intelligence can easily get bored, so your job is to train your pet parrot and spend the time it takes to make your bird into a wonderful pet. It takes time and patience to train a parrot, but with the proper training, your parrot will provide you with many years of friendship. You can train your parrot when you follow a few steps. Whenever “school is in” for your parrot, it is always best to remove your parrot from his or her cage and train in a small quiet space. Your parrot is more likely to remain attentive and retain information when it is in a new environment. The next thing you will want to do, eliminate all distractions in your home. If your parrot becomes distracted during training, it will not learn well. That means that you need to turn off the radio, television and perhaps even the telephone. Also, remember that parrots are a lot like children. They have short attention spans, so short training sessions are recommended. In addition, try to plan your parrot’s training time around their schedule, not yours. After mealtime is always, a good time for training because your parrot will be content and will pay attention. Your parrot will also appreciate plenty of praise. Even if you find that you were not very successful, do not let your parrot see your stress levels rise. This makes it an unpleasant experience for your bird and you will have a harder time getting your parrot interested in learning in the future. When you are ready to teach your parrot a new trick, your pet parrot will respond well to treats and praise. Remember that all animals respond better to praise than punishment. Try to avoid punishing your parrot, even if he or she is acting naughty. Ignoring this behavior is your best bet when training your pet parrot. Parrots do not understand punishment or negative reinforcement. In fact, if you respond to your parrot’s bad behavior, your pet may actually see this as positive attention. Keep in mind that while your parrot will love food treats as rewards, try to accentuate the positive and encourage good behavior with lots of praise and play time. Otherwise, your parrot may only perform the tricks you want them to when some kind of food reward is available. Repetition is the key to successfully training your pet parrot. Repeating these basic steps repeatedly until your pet “gets” the trick is the best way to train your parrot to perform. This works well for basic commands and advanced tricks. If you have just gotten your pet parrot, start out with very simple tricks, such as teaching your parrot to sit on your finger on command. Find a word for each trick and use it every time you train. Most of all, never force your parrot to train. If you find your parrot is tired or uninterested, then stop and try again another time. As your parrot learns more command and tricks, you can begin moving your training session closer and closer to the bird’s cage. As they get better at their new skill, they will feel comfortable performing in his or her cage and in the hustle and bustle of your household. Birds learn quickly in most cases, and sometimes just by listening when not in training, which may cause embarrassment to you if they learn something inappropriate. Training a parrot takes a lot of time and patience. You must love your bird and have a lot of time and dedication to make this partnership worthwhile. With patient training and love, you end up with a fantastic and well-behaved pet that will be The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

“Open wide and say Ahhhh...”

February is Dental Month Book your appointment.

ASK THE VET

Offering the latest in advanced technology our highly skilled, compassionate team provides superior, quality veterinary care for your family pets and livestock.

“Ffffffffffft!”

Anesthesia-Free Dentistry… Is it worth it? Oral care for our pets is essential for the overall health of each individual.

Animals use their mouths and teeth for many things including eating, playing, defending themselves, and grooming. It is important to consider that like us, pets need dental care, too – and you’ll notice that at your pet’s annual examination one of the first things a veterinarian will do is assess the teeth of your animal. There are many ways to keep your pet’s teeth in check! Some options may include teeth brushing, dental chews, dental food and routine dental care at your veterinary clinic. Preventative dental care not only helps to preserve the teeth, but also reduces the costs associated with dentistry procedures. A common question that seems to come up for us is whether or not anesthesia-free dental cleanings are effective. A dental cleaning without anesthesia would be similar to a cleaning we, as humans, would get at a dental office while awake. Most veterinary dental procedures that are recommended to our pets involve an anesthetic or sedation to allow the pet to have a full cleaning while “sleeping”.

tended period of time. In a patient that is under an anesthetic, we can safely place a tube into the trachea to allow for a protected airway and avoid any chance of accidental inhalation of water and other debris during the procedure. The patient has adequate pain control while “sleeping” and we are able to examine, extract and treat any teeth that are diseased or have abnormalities present. All in all, the ability to place an animal under an anesthetic allows us to be much more thorough with our patients. We are able to remove or treat any diseased teeth on the spot and don’t have to risk leaving any diseased teeth behind without knowing it. This increases our patient’s quality of life and reduces the amount of discomfort they may be feeling. Speak to your veterinarian about the best options for your pet’s dental care. The Animal Care Centre of Strathmore References: American Animal Hospital Association. “2013 AAHA Dental Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats. American Veterinary Dental College. ”What is an Anesthesia Free Pet Dental Cleaning” AVDCrg. http://avdc.org/AFD/what-is-an-anesthesia-free-dental-cleaning/ (accessed January 25, 2018).

So why would we choose a dental cleaning for our pet that involves no anesthesia? Many people speculate that not only does it save time and money, it may also become a routine procedure that can help keep the teeth white and clean in appearance. So if an anesthesia free dental is so easy and cost effective, why bother putting your pet under an anesthetic to have such a procedure done? The major disadvantage to anesthesia-free dental cleaning is the inability to clean under the gum line of each tooth, or probe each tooth thoroughly to check for periodontal pockets and disease that settles under the gum line. Having your pet under a general anesthetic allows us to radiograph the teeth, tooth roots and jaw bone. It allows us to perform a thorough dental assessment, as we need the patient to be very still for an ex-

HOW TO BREAK FREE FROM FEAR AND WORRY AND EMBRACE DISRUPTION Humanity is in the midst of a global seismic disruption with tremors and aftershocks felt at national, local, professional and personal levels. Disruption is a radical change in an industry, business

strategy, etc. The introduction of a new product or service creates a new market. The result is change. Change is always disruptive. The lens we look through is coloured by experiences that determine whether we see disruption as a friend or a foe. Furthermore, who and what we fill our time with influences our perception of what is occurring.

unaware of how algorithms shape our digital and consumer experiences. Algorithms are a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer. Many organizations, including Facebook, use them to calibrate and decide what appears in every Google search and social media newsfeed. Additionally, banks, retailers, and political parties employ them to expand their segment of the market. A mathematical construct decides what we do and don't see. This is based on a compilation and analysis of likes, searches, games, surveys and interactions with others. Information is willingly shared and the majority are oblivious of how it is used. If you use social media, know that unfriending people is not the main reason they no longer appear in your newsfeed.

Getting Past Disruption's Rhetoric However, not every change is disruptive. When an idea existed previously and is enhanced or improved, it’s likely the business isn’t disruptive. Communication disruption occurred with concepts like radio, television and the Internet, which changed the entire game. Relationships formed with technology rather than other human beings. Some leaders create breeding grounds for fear with their words, instead of calming troubled waters and helping people remember and recognize the upside of innovation. Humanity needs to learn to cut through the noise of their rhetoric. In his most recent annual letter to CEOs, Larry Fink writes: “Society is demanding that companies, both public and private, serve a social purpose. To prosper over time, every company must not

Companies must benefit all of their stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, customers, and the communities in which they operate.” For this to occur, people and organizations need to be known, liked and trusted. Algorithms help companies develop those relationships. Leia Cator reminds us, “Technology rocks, but people create the stories.” People are always the most important part of any equation and we are much more than an algorithm.

Pay attention when people react with anger and hostility to your boundaries. You have found the edge where their respect for you ends. Never discredit your gut instinct. You are not paranoid. Following retirement from 32 years as a Life Insurance Agent, I found I was bored in the winter months, because we are not Snowbirds, and don’t go south for the winter months. As a follow-up to the Green Book - ‘Strathmore, The Village that Moved’, published in 1986, I spoke to mentors Bob and Jan Giles who were previous owners of The Strathmore Standard, and customers of mine in my previous life. I told them in December 2009, that I had an idea for a newspaper column - to find people listed in the second half of ‘The Green Book’, and find out what they’d been doing for the past 25 years! Bob and Jan agreed to be my guinea pigs, and recommended I create a questionnaire of about eight questions, asking who people were, where had they come from, when and why they came to the Strathmore Area, and what had they done for a living, etc. I met with the then-Editor of The Strathmore Standard, and talked about my project. It took over two months for her to get approval from her Head Office. Originally, this was to be a winter project only, as we travel with our 5th Wheel in the Summer. In April 2010, I interviewed Bob and Jan Giles and submitted it to The Strathmore Standard. There article was published on May 5th, 2010 and I was immediately inundated with referrals. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were home for that summer, and I was able to write and publish an article every two weeks. In May 2011, I was approached by Bob Sobol of Strathmore Town Council, and invited to submit two articles for the upcoming Centennial Magazine. To do this, I had to visit the editor of the new Strathmore Times newspaper, Mario Prusina, who persuaded me to become a Freelance Reporter with The Times. So, after a 6-month hiatus, I started writing for The Times. Originally, my column was entitled ‘Our Seniors: Their History,’ which was changed to ‘Remembering Our Past’ until someone advised they thought I was writing about people who had recently died (!), and it changed to its current name ‘Remembering Our Roots’. In December 2012, I was approached by Walt and Olive Hayes, whose article had been published January 27th, 2011 asking me to transcribe all the articles into book form. So, in June 2013 Volume One of ‘Remembering Our Roots’ covering articles written 2010 2012, was published by Blitzprint in Calgary. It was an unqualified success, with the first 100 books being sold in 5 days! I went on to order a total of 300 books that year, and sold them all. Publication of these articles in book form, brought many, many referrals, so I continued with my biweekly publication of articles, except for cutting back on summer interviews whilst travelling. Volume Two was published in June 2015, covering articles written 2013 - 2014, and I ordered 200 books from Blitzprint. But, this was the year the economy turned down, and I struggled to sell those books. Volume Three was published in December 2017, reflecting articles written in 2015 - 2017, and I ordered 150 books, selling 80 books in the three weeks before Christmas. Over the past seven years, many people I interview will purchase a book from me, to the extent I had to reorder a reprint of Volume One recently, and sold 11 books in 10 days! So, the interest is still there. Of interest to my readers are the following facts - my books are on display at The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, The Calgary Public Library, Main Branch, Local History Dept. I was a ‘Nominee’ for The Alberta 2017 Minister’s Seniors Service Award’. I have sold all three Volumes to a lady in Fredericton, N.B. who grew up in Strathmore. Where do I go from here? Well, I already have about 10 referrals to start working with, meaning there will be a Volume 4 in 2019.; God and health permitting! John Godsman The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

HERE’S TO YOU DAD My batteries need recharging. 2018 started off a bloody mess and here I am 24 days into the New Year and just wanting to wave the white flag of defeat because really, enough is enough. If there ever was a need for a rewind or reset button, now is the time I would be pushing it. Without depressing you with all the details, let just say the past few weeks have been some of the hardest I have ever struggled through and I now feel like the proverbial dish rag that has not only been rung out but tossed to the bottom of the sink –sitting in a clump, covered in crumbs and starting to mildew. I am a recovering from a hangover, caused by exhaustion and heartbreak and the hangover is pure hell. No amount of aspirin and greasy eggs will get me past this lethargy quickly. My sole ambition for the next twenty-four hours to perhaps, twenty-four years seems to be to put on my comfiest sweats, curl up with my electric blanket, put the world on Do Not Disturb and just crash. My energy reserves are at the point where rolling to my other side in bed should be celebrated as an accomplishment. I have bags under my eyes big enough to pack for a week away. A lethargic lizard lazing about has me beat right now. Oh, and my brain. I think that if a zombie shuffled across me they would suddenly be too full, not even a bit peckish. If zombies could talk, this one would say, “Sorry! I’m on a diet – no need to consume empty calories, you know.” Right now, my brain has been reduced to just a few neurons permitting me to yawn, breath, blink every 30 seconds or so, and thankfully, still let me know when I need to pee. Beyond that, I can’t guarantee anything. So why, then, am I at working, writing an article that I hope is somewhat coherent while double fisting diet Dr. Pepper? Since, damn it, sometimes life just sucks. Sometimes it sucks the energy out of you and it knocks you down and it taunts you and calls you names. Sometimes, the lemons life throws at you feel more like grenades. I know, I’ve got lemon-shaped bruises on my heart right now. I however, have consciously made a choice to get up, get dressed and put a fricken smile on my face and a spring in my step. To you sucky - crappy times, to you, I choose to give my middle finger. I’m pulling up my big girl panties, I’m getting up and getting going and yes, at times I am going to stumble and cry and scream and really want to just have a nap but I’m going to live my life full of joy and grace and gratitude and hu-

mour and energy because this is what I have learned in the past few weeks since I sat beside my dying father, holding his hand and straining to hear each of his last breaths until there were no more. Life might suck, but life is a precious gift that doesn’t last forever and I can choose to spend it feeling sad and drained, or I can spend it dancing in the rain, jumping in puddles, laughing out loud and celebrating all the wonderful, blessed, energizing moments I spent with my Dad. Well, it’s time to find out if this is true. It is a great time of year to tackle this project. The colder weather keeps us inside more, so an indoor project is perfect. Here are my lessons learned. One big tip - start with one closet. Don’t look beyond one closet. Professional organizers tell us that we get overwhelmed if we think about the whole project. Break it down into manageable tasks.

ORGANIZING A CLOSET

1. I started with a smaller closet because, again, the idea is that I didn’t want to feel overwhelmed or discouraged.

Thinking about our closets can put the fear and panic into people. It’s a common “little secret” that most of us just shut the closet door and ignore the mess - and I am guilty, too!

3. Once the closet is empty, this is a perfect time to clean it. It’s time to paint it, wipe down the walls, wash the shelves and vacuum the dust bunnies off the floor.

So, it’s my turn. I am going to clean my closets in my house and the realtor in me knows that keeping closets organized and maintained truly helps when you decide to sell.

5. I doodled out a better use of the space and then did a little planning. Our local stores have some neat closet adapters and gadgets. You can add more shelving or hanging bars inexpensively with “do it yourself” items from our Home Hardware or Canadian Tire. Add a screwdriver, and a stud finder, and you have more closet space. I also learned from watching TV personality Peter Walsh that there are other hangers and gadgets that are

2. Next, I got 3 “medium sized” moving boxes. Separate items into each box: the Keep Box, the Recycle Box and the Throw Away Box. BE RUTHLESS with this process. If you haven’t worn or touched the item in 6-12months, you really need to consider getting it gone.

But, where do I start? It’s pretty overwhelming. I am told by experts that what can seem like a huge job, organizing your closet is actually incredibly therapeutic!

4. Is it time to rework the set up of the closet? I felt that once I had an empty closet, I wanted to add some newer hardware to the closet.

very effective like pullouts, called a freedom rail that lets you hang 1 outfit at a time (say, your outfit for the day). When you’re done with the pullout, it just tucks back into its space - an excellent tool. Peters website is chalk full of ideas and quizzes you can take to help with organization. I like his approach to organizing. It makes sense and is all about everyday real-life situations and usable advice. Thank you, Peter. Www. Peterwalsh.com 6. Time to start putting items that belong in this closet back. I had started with our front closet, and found that there were many items in the “keep box” that actually belonged in another area of our house... an example would be the baseball and bat that belonged in our storage shed with the other sports stuff. Professionals suggest that your goal is to only put back 50% of the items that were in the closet before you started. If there is more than that, maybe you need to revisit step 3... the Keep vs Giveaway box. 7. I hung all the current weather coats back up. Phil’s on the left and mine on the right with enough room for empty hangers. NOT for more of our coats, but for guests coats and jackets. 3 or 4 extra hangers, no more, or you will quickly fall into old habits or hanging unnecessary items in the front closet. 8. Now, either find 3 baskets or organizers that fit neatly above or below the coats on shelves. Don’t use the floor if at all possible. An area of shelving can house the baskets. Next, because we live in Alberta, I put all pairs of the gloves we use (and threw away mismatched pairs), I love scarves, so I bought a hanging gadget that I can hang several scarves up and ready to wear. The other basket was for our hats and toques.

FIRST IN MORTGAGES 9. I love a fresh scent, so I decided to keep a favourite room freshener spray in the closet. When I open the closet, I can give the area a quick spritz. 10. Mothballs are a real thing, so buy real cedar chips or lavender Sachets to discourage moths to hang in your clean, freshly organized closet. All done! And I can honestly say, this process was enlightening. I truly do feel better, lighter, and every time I put a coat on, I feel accomplished. Next, the bedroom closet...wish me luck! We are so excited to introduce this to the magazine. There will be resources, cheat sheets, mind maps and more for you to download along the way!

INTRODUCTION AND WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Everyone is always talking about time management. There just aren’t enough hours in the day for many of us and so the belief goes that if we could squeeze a little more productivity out of our time, we’d be able to accomplish our dreams, earn more money, stay more organized and enjoy more time off. It all sounds great, except for one thing: the entire endeavor is completely misguided. Sounds harsh but in fact it’s also completely true. Your problem is not with time. You have plenty of time. If you didn’t have plenty of time, you probably wouldn’t have been able to watch that entire boxset of [INSERT TV DRAMA HERE] would you? And you likely wouldn’t have spent so long on YouTube… The problem isn’t time – it’s energy. Your energy, just like your time, is finite. Only it actually exists in somewhat smaller quantities meaning that it’s all too easy to run out and end up completely exhausted. And that’s when we start to use our time poorly and not get much done. Think about it: imagine if you could jump out of bed feeling energetic first thing in the morning. What would you do with that extra hour of productivity? Hit the gym maybe? Make some calls? Do last night’s washing up so that you could live in a house that wouldn’t always be untidy? Remember when you were a little kid and you could just run around all day without ever seeming to get tired? Wouldn’t it be incredible if you could get that back? That’s what we’ll be looking at in this feature...

Well let’s take a look at the facts. Unless you’re some kind of energy guru/prodigy, it’s a fair bet that you already have chronically low energy. Why? Because it’s a fact that most people are stressed. Specifically, nearly half of adults report feeling stressed every day. 44% of Americans report feeling more stressed year on year and work-related stress reportedly causes 10% of strokes.

9:00 AM - 7:00 PM

What’s more, low testosterone is also a statistical likelihood if you’re a man. Testosterone prescriptions have doubled in the last ten years and one in forty men over 30 have ‘low testosterone’. Bearing in mind that this ‘low testosterone’ is measured against an already very low level that is considered acceptable. Mankind has far less testosterone in the modern age owing to stress, owing to xenoestrogens in the water, owing to less physical activity – and guess what? Low testosterone is also a cause of low energy. Seeing a pattern? Vitamin D is also chronically low in most of the population. This also causes low energy. Other common vitamin deficiencies that most people suffer from at some point include low vitamin B12, low magnesium, low iron… they all lead to low energy. So yes, chances are that you have ‘low energy’ – even if you’re no less energetic than your colleagues and friends. Remember that little kid version of you who used to run around the house all day? That’s what great energy should look like! And of course there’s a chance that you might be even lower on energy than this already-low norm…

bought pie will normally land you about 600Kcal. Then you have the chips, which will add in another 200Kcal, your drink, your desert… By the end, you’ve no doubt eaten over 1,000 calories, which happens to be half of most people’s daily allowance (2,000 is a good average to follow here). This is what’s making us fat and lugging all that extra bodyweight around with you is unsurprisingly a surefire way to make yourself tired. Dumping that much food into your gut at once is also not a great move.

Chapter 2: Your Diet Can Drain or Enhance Your Energy Diet is one of the biggest contributing factors to low energy – both for the population in general and for individuals specifically. In the wild we would have eaten a diet that provided us with tons of energy and that fueled us to chase down prey and to generally perform at our optimum. It is not a coincidence that the food available to us provided us with so much energy: rather, our bodies evolved as they did because that was the food that was around. In other words, through thousands of years of evolution, we adapted to thrive on what was available to us… And now we’re ruining it by surviving on a diet that contains none of that goodness (or at least barely any). Our Low Density, Simple Carb Diets If you’re like a lot of people, then you will come home from work after a long, tiring day and you will throw on a pizza or a microwave meal. Perhaps you’ll bake a pie and some chips. Let’s take a look at what you actually get from that. Well, on an energy front you do get a lot of calories. In fact, a standard shop-

So all you’re doing every night is dumping your body full of low-quality food to process and in vast quantities. Is it a wonder you wake up tired?

How can I be sure of that? Because you already knew that your diet probably wasn’t all that healthy. You already know that homecooked fresh ingredients are much better.

Ear/Nose Piercing & Lash Serum Available

thenewsyneighbour.com

Worse yet, all those calories and simple carbs have done you approximately zero good. Why? Because they’re such low quality. When you eat a shop-bought pie, unless you’re spending lots of money, you’re actually eating cuts of meat that are ‘all the leftovers’ blended together. All the pastry consists of is flour and sugar, the chips offer no nutritious value and everything you’re eating has been preserved, transported and stored.

Now, I could tell you to cut it out. To stop eating that garbage and to start eating healthily again. But it wouldn’t do any good.

And guess how you feel once that process has ended? Exhausted! And you get a sudden energy slump (which by the way, is when most of us snack on more sugar).

Supplements That Provide Energy

Stylz Salon & Spa ALL Haircare Needs Available!

What’s more though, the calories you just took in were ‘simple carbs’. The pastry around that pie, the chips, the desert, the drink – all of these are simple sugars that spike the blood stream immediately. And that’s before you even count all the added sugar. Suddenly hitting your body with that much raw energy might sound like a good thing for your energy but in fact you couldn’t be further from the truth. Instead, you’re spiking your blood sugar, leading to a sudden surge of insulin and a ‘high’. That insulin uses up the sugar and removes it from your blood but because you’re not using it that quickly, it simply gets stored as fat (a process called lipogenesis).

The problem? You don’t have the time, energy or perhaps even money to change the way you eat. Notice that energy is a problem here: something of a vicious circle isn’t it? So to ‘jumpstart’ your self-improvement and your drive towards more energy, why don’t we start with a supplement stack? The following ingredients are things you can take with your meals which will greatly enhance your energy levels: The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Altogether Different

Vitamin D is excellent for two things: improving your sleep and helping you to produce more testosterone. The vast majority of us are deficient, so take this in the morning and you’ll start feeling a lot better.

Vitamin B12 and Iron

are required to give us our healthy red blood cells. In case you forgot, red blood cells are the oxygen-carrying portion of our blood which our body uses to burn fat and fuel all kinds of processes in our body.

Coconut Oil is super ‘in vogue’ right now on the web and it deserves all the praise it’s getting. Apart from being excellent for all kinds of beauty treatments, coconut oil contains medium-chain triglycerides which are a type of fat that stimulate the liver to produce ketones. If you’ve ever heard of a ‘ketogenic diet’, you’ll know that ketones provide the body (and particularly the brain) with an alternate source of energy that it can’t get from carbs. Omega 3 Fatty Acid is an essential fatty acid that the body uses to create cell walls. This increases your ‘cell membrane permeability’ which is a very important value. Why? Because it helps the cells to communicate with one another and it allows neurotransmitters to pass more easily between brain cells.

Creatine

is a supplement used by athletes. Its job is to take the brokendown form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and recombine it for extra use in the body. What does this mean? Well, ATP is the main ‘energy currency’ of all life. It comes from glucose and releases energy when the bonds connecting three molecules are broken apart. This results in ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and AMP (adenosine monophosphate) – a two and a one. Normally that’s all the use you can get out of it but with creatine, you are able to reuse the energy by rebonding the ADP and AMP back together. The body produces creatine naturally but if you take it in supplement form you can get a little more. In real-terms this means a few extra seconds of exertion when lifting weights or running a marathon – and it means better mental energy for performing erythematic and fighting stress.

Lutein is generally thought of as a supplement for the eyes to

help prevent macular degeneration. In recent studies, it was found that it could also enhance the performance of the mitochondria – the energy factories that live inside each of our cells. When given to mice, it was found that they would voluntarily run miles further each week on their treadmills – pointing to increased energy and performance.

Garlic is a vasodilator. This means that it can widen the blood vessels to allow more blood and oxygen to get around – to the brain and muscles for instance - thus fueling you with more energy. Vitamin B6 is used to help us extract energy from carbohy-

drates. At the same time, it is also used for the creation of neurotransmitters which helps it to boost cognitive performance. Low levels of B6 have been shown to result in lack of energy and focus and even shrinking brain tissue and Alzheimer’s.

look. CoQ10 and creatine are found in red meats, vitamins and minerals are found in all our fruits and vegetables, omega 3 fatty acid is found in fish, lutein is found in eggs… If you just make sure that everything you’re eating is fresh and nutritious, then you’ll be providing your body with all the energy it needs. You’ll be able to absorb it better and you’ll be getting it in the right ratios and quantities. Ratios and quantities that you evolved to thrive on. Meanwhile, many other substances found in your diet can help to boost your energy levels too: zinc, magnesium, vitamin C, PQQ, l-carnitine, l-theanine, resveratrol… Eating a healthy diet is like having an incredibly expensive athlete’s supplement stack! Only delicious… Meanwhile, you should try to avoid the ‘simple’ carbs. That’s anything that tastes sweet (like cake) and anything white (like pasta or rice). Instead, start eating brown rice and pasta, vegetables, spinach and have that in the place of your chips (as a rule, try to avoid processed, manmade carbs that you couldn’t find). This will release energy much more slowly and provide you with a steady supply throughout the day. Don’t be afraid of fat either – it contains more calories (9 per gram versus 4) but it’s slow release too. Try to eat smaller portions, more often and don’t over-stuff yourself. How do you go about cooking these nutritious, fresh meals when you’re so pushed for time and energy? Using the supplement stack can be a good head start but another tip is to prepare your meals at the start of the week. Cook up a few pots of food you can dip into throughout the

week and keep what you don’t eat in the freezer or in a plastic contains.

On Going too Far… If you’ve read much on diets before, then you might have noticed that this recommendation is somewhat close to the paleo diet and the slow carb die t. Well, that’s because it is… But we’ve stopped just short of going too far in either direction. We eat too many processed carbs. Of that there’s no doubt. And if we ate less of those carbs, we’d feel much better. At the same time though, we still need carbs. They’re still an important food group in our diet and if we get the right kind in the right quantities, they actually boost testosterone production and aid with our general levels of energy and wellbeing. Restrict carbs too much and you’ll feel tired. The occasionally bit of brown pasta with your bolognaise won’t kill you. And the Chinese show that rice isn’t terrible for your waistline! (In fact a lot of classic bodybuilders eat nothing but rice and steamed chicken). Likewise, while natural, unprocessed foods are definitely healthier than cake, pie and chips, you don’t need to eat ‘only’ the things you would find in the wild. A lot of serious paleo dieters will tell you not to eat bread, wheat or cheese. And they will never break their diet to have a bowl of pasta. But here’s the thing: most of the top performing athletes in the world have performed just fine on bread (and you can forget about gluten being an issue unless you have an intolerance). Some of the smartest thinkers in the world drank lots of tea and ate lots of chocolate…

Point being? You can perform just fine eating a relatively ‘normal’ diet. And actually, our lifestyle places different demands on our body these days anyway, it’s only natural our diet should adapt. So in other words, don’t waste your energy thinking you can only eat specific foods. Just stick with your current diet but make it a little healthier by cutting back on the simple carbs and by injecting some more nutrients.

Come on and check out the new clothing arriving weekly. 34 •

Alcohol and Your Energy Here comes the bad news: alcohol is very bad for your energy levels. In the short term, alcohol is terrible for your energy and can leave you completely exhausted. The reason for that is that alcohol is actually a depressant. That means that it works to inhibit the firing of neurons in your brain, slowing down your thinking and making you sleepy. Alcohol, like a sleeping tablet or anxiolytic, works in the opposite manner to a stimulant. And because it causes whole brain areas to stop working, it can rob you of your higher order brain function too.

So if you were planning on being productive this evening – doing a workout, finishing some work – think twice about picking up that beer. If you’re going to enjoy alcohol though, try to have your last glass a few hours before bed. And try eating banana and honey sandwiches as a hangover cure. These work wonders as they line the stomach, replenish your energy stores, fix your electrolytes and break down acetaldehyde – a toxic substance that is responsible for a lot of the negative effects associated with hangover. Hello! Larry here! Happy February, everyone. Roger and I are very excited about winters end being in sight. We know a lot of you love winter, but we prefer being outside when it is a bit nicer. We continue to try and get our steps in, any way we can. We hope you diabetics are doing the same. We have been pondering about what to give you this month and have decided to go back to the basics as a great New Year’s reminder. We found some terrific information on the Canadian Diabetes Website to share with you. Keep this website in mind if you are looking for any information. There is so much available at your toe-tips and fingertips. www.diabetes.ca We wanted to take you back to prevention, and this is what we found… Prevention is the best medicine. Being able to identify signs of foot problems can go a long way in preventing complications. Have your health care professional check your feet AT LEAST one to two times per year or more if required.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR If you have any corns (thick or hard skin on toes), calluses (thick skin on bottom of feet), in-grown toenails, warts or slivers, have them treated by your doctor or a foot care specialist (such as a podiatrist, chiropodist or experienced foot care nurse). Do not try to treat them yourself. If you have any swelling, warmth, redness or pain in your legs or

23 DEEP questions, one at a time. 1. What is more difficult for you, looking into someone’s eyes when you are telling someone how you feel, or looking into someone’s eyes when they are telling you how they feel? 2. Think of the last time you were REALLY angry. WHY were you angry? Do you still feel the same way? 3. You are on a flight from Honolulu to Chicago non-stop. There is a fire in the back of the plane. You have enough time to make ONE phone call. Who do you call? What do you tell them? 4. You are at the doctor’s office and he has just informed you that you have approximately one month to live. Do you tell anyone/ everyone you are going to die? What do you do with your remaining days? Would you be afraid? 6. You are walking down the street on your way to work. There is a dog drowning in the canal on the side of the street. Your boss has told you if you are late even once more, you are fired. Do you take the time to save the dog’s life? Why or Why not? 7. Would you rather be hurt by the on you trust the most or the one you love the most? 8. Your best friend confesses that he/she has feelings for you more than just friendship. KIDS & SOCIAL MEDIA How Can Parents Know What' s Appropriate?

In today's fast-paced world, it's hard enough to keep track of what's appropriate on social media for yourself. Protecting your kids is even more complicated. While you want to keep them safe, you also don't want to overprotect them and deprive them of the internet's many benefits. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media sites are especially challenging as kids spend more and more time on these sites. Social media has its own etiquette that includes both formal and unspoken rules. If you break the formal rules, sites such as Facebook will give you a warning or even close down your account. While breaking unspoken rules doesn't cause such obvious consequences, they can be just as harmful in other ways. Kids and teens who were born in the digital age may seem completely at ease in the social media environment. Yet they are also extremely vulnerable, both to predators and to issues such as peer pressure, bullying, and the social costs of mistakes. A faux pas on social media can damage friendships, self-confidence, and even kids' safety. That's why it's so crucial for parents to have a good understanding of what is and isn't appropriate for kids online.

What is Appropriate? When it comes to posting photos on Facebook, Instagram, and other social sites, how do you know what is and isn't appropriate?

You can't rely on the rules of the social media platforms for this, as they permit many things that aren't necessarily appropriate by community standards. There's always a potential danger in posting anything that might be seen as sexually provocative. For younger kids in middle school, the standards are more rigid. It must also be noted that unfair as this may be, people tend to judge girls more harshly than boys in this regard. However, it's best to be cautious with both male and female children on such matters. Your own standards and that of your local community should always be considered. Keep in mind, though, that once something is posted online it can potentially be seen by people all over the world. Context is always a crucial factor when posting something online. For example, a girl posing in a bathing suit by herself has a very different connotation than one taken in a group, such as on a family holiday or posing with a swimming team. There are also the nuances of photos. Someone photographed while engaged in a fun activity or sports event isn't the same as someone staring provocatively into the camera.

Always Consider the Potential Impact It's extremely easy to offend people nowadays, even when you don't intend to. Most people today realize that it's not appropriate to post content that's offensive or hateful towards others. However, sometimes even apparently innocent content can trigger negative reactions. For example, photos or videos depicting luxurious scenes can come across as bragging. Photos of a party can come across as exclusionary to kids who weren't invited. A photo taken on a family vacation or at a summer house could cause envy or hostility on the part of classmates or their parents. This doesn't mean you or your kids have to self-censor everything you feel like posting. It's wise, however, to encourage your kids to ask themselves about the likely impact of everything they post.

Preventing Online Conflicts and Bullying As issues such as cyberbullying and body-shaming get more attention, it's necessary to ensure your own children are neither the targets or instigators of such behaviour. Make sure your kids think carefully before they post anything about others online. Explain to them that it's never appropriate to insult, mock, or de-

mean someone else, either in person or online, even if they're just doing it as a joke. Encourage your children to follow a social media version of the Golden Rule. Before they post something about someone else, they should ask themselves how they'd feel if someone posted this type of content about them. What may seem like a harmless prank could have a devastating effect on another person. This, in turn, can cause all kinds of ramifications, such as complaints or even lawsuits from other kids' parents. What if it's your child who's the target of online attacks or bullying? In this case, parents should identify the cause of the problem and make sure that school authorities and the parents of the offenders are aware of the problem. It's also important to help children put such issues into perspective and make them realize that such behaviour doesn't reflect on their worth. If it's a long-term or widespread issue, kids may need counseling to help them deal with it.

Staying Safe From Predators While online feuds and cyberbullying are bad enough, there are also even bigger dangers lurking on the internet. Predators browse social media sites and seek pictures of children. While there's no way to predict what will provoke a twisted person, it's always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to protecting children online. Photos posted online are easy to circulate and very difficult to remove. Something posted on a public page is visible to anyone. That's why it's a good idea for kids and teenagers to set their social media profiles to private.

Teach Kids to Always Consider the Consequences Social media sites seem casual, trivial, and mostly harmless. It's easy for people, especially kids and teens, to post something without thinking about the results. As social media becomes ever more influential in society, the consequences can be quite serious. Younger children should always be supervised online. Parental controls can help to protect them. Older kids and teens can be given more leeway. They too, however, should be aware that everything they post will be seen by countless others and that it's much easier to post something online than to delete or undo it. they are just by looking at them, and when you look at their nutritional profile, it’s easy to understand why they are so revered in many Eastern cultures. To give you an idea, a good handful of goji berries can deliver:

Why Goji Berries Are the Holy Grail of Nutrition It’s not too often that you see a food with the nutritional profile of goji berries. Also called wolfberries, goji are the fruits of Lycium barbarum and Lycium chinense plants and have been cultivated for over 2000 years in Asia. They are so precious to this culture that they have been nicknamed “red diamonds” for their unusually high nutrition value. Let’s look into these special gems a bit further, to give you an appreciation of what they can deliver for your health, and of course, your taste buds.

The Nutritional Punch Of Goji Berries When you get a glimpse of wellsourced dried goji berries, you can instantly tell how nutritionally dense

• 18 amino acids, including all 8 essential amino acids, which makes it a complete protein • Six essential fatty acids • 22 trace minerals and 11 essential vitamins (including A, C, B-complex, and E) • 140 percent DV of vitamin A, 100 percent DV of iron, copper, and riboflavin, 91 percent DV selenium, 24 percent DV of potassium, and 18 percent DV of zinc • Superior source of antioxidants, and often rated #1 in ORAC food scores (25,000) • More vitamin C per ounce of oranges • Great source of fibre When this nutritional powerhouse hits your body on a consistent basis, it can translate into some very nice health benefits.

The Health Benefits Of Goji Berries With so much nutrition packed into this tiny little berry (like 500 times more vitamin C than an orange by weight), it’s not too big of a surprise that the body often reciprocates the nourishment. When you start to use goji berries on a consistent basis, you could start to see the following benefits:

• Promotes a healthy immune system • Supports healthy liver function • Nourishes eye, skin, and hair health • Supports a healthy heart • Supports healthy kidney function • Uplifts mood 42 •

Being such a high antioxidant food, it is also an excellent free radical scavenger, which can support a healthy aging process as well. So how do you work these health promoting berries into your diet?

Using Goji Berries In Your Diet Since goji berries are an incredibly versatile food, there are numerous ways to work them into your diet on a daily basis. You don’t even have to get creative, as a handful of goji berries (with their mild tangy taste that is slightly sweet) are fine just on their own. However, if you want to get creative, simply throw some goji berries in your smoothie, trail mix, cereal, oatmeal, jam, salads, tea, or bake with them. They go great in this Coconut Brownie Recipe, which ups the antioxidant ante with the raw cacao (21,000 ORAC score) also in the recipe. Of course, not all goji berry sources are clean and nourishing since they are primarily sourced from China. One needs to be extremely careful of various contaminants (including heavy metals) which may be lurking in that bag of nutritional goodness. Thankfully, you can avoid that risk by getting Health Ranger Select Organic Goji Berries, which ensures you get a clean harvest due to the meticulous testing and strict requirements that need to be met before they are provided to the public. Make no bones about it, a clean source of these “red diamonds” is going to add a tasty and nutritional punch to your diet. If there ever was a superfood Holy Grail providing happiness and a feeling of youth, goji would be a strong contender for that distinction. Derek Henry

I’m in therapy to learn how to deal with people who should be in therapy.

When you are dead, you don’t know that you are dead. It is difficult only for the others. It is the same when you are stupid.

I can’t believe how old people my age are. My super power is holding onto junk for years and throwing it away a week before I need it. I think senility is going to be a fairly smooth transition for me.

I am starting to think I will never be old enough to know better.

actually the full statement was ‘you’re pretty annoying,’ but I only focus on the positive things. I always knew I’d get old. How fast it happened was a bit of a surprise, though.

One day it just clicks. You realize what’s important and what isn’t. You learn to care less about what other people think of you and more about what you think of yourself. You realize how far you’ve come and you remember when you thought things were such a mess that you would never recover. And you smile. You smile because you are truly proud of yourself and the person you’ve fought to become. Never forget 3 types of people in your life. - Who helped you in your difficult times. - Who left you in your difficult times. - Who put you in difficult times.

Why Your Child Should Be Practicing Martial Arts If your child has expressed an interest in martial arts, you may be reluctant to sign them up out of fear they will become violent. But contrary to popular belief, martial arts won't turn your kid into a neighbourhood bully. In fact, many children who were violent before going into martial arts become non-violent as their practice progresses. In addition to nonviolence, your child will learn a plethora of other skills that can help them excel in school and life.

Discipline

Although martial arts has a history of preparing men for war, these days things are different. Instead of fighting others, a child is required to fight against themselves in order to develop discipline and self control. The ability to restrain anger, frustration, or envy and channel the energy into a positive endeavor can help your child identify and manage their emotions. Martial arts can help make your child aware of their strengths and limitations, not only in the physical sense but also the emotional.

Respect

A key pillar of martial arts is respect. Students are taught to respect themselves, their instructors, and the other students. As a child learns to respect themselves, they are less likely to be a bully magnet or doormat. Children learn the importance of standing up for themselves without violent confrontation.

Physical Fitness

In this age of technology and convenience, many kids struggle to get the recommended amount of exercise. Martial arts has long been seen as a complete workout because every muscle in the body is used to execute difficult moves. Training also includes countless mobility and flexibility exercises, so you may even see your child's posture begin to improve. Cross training is often encouraged to improve stamina, speed, and dexterity.

Confidence

Many parents who encourage their children to participate in martial arts report a boost of confidence in their kids. Although martial arts does not train your kid to become a fighting machine, a child will naturally feel more confident in their ability to handle bullies. Rest assured that any martial art practice has well defined rules, as well as a moral code that has evolved over the centuries. In addition, your child will learn to celebrate silently and to show mercy towards a defeated opponent, teaching them to be humble as well as confident.

nothing more than make a series of right decisions throughout the match. Because strategy is tailored to the opponent in the middle of a match, your child will be taught to make fast yet educated decisions.

Listening Skills

Your child will learn to take instruction and feedback from the martial arts teacher. As their listening skills improve they will be learning valuable lessons to take with them for the rest of their lives. Active listening can help your child in school, in peer-topeer interactions, and in problem solving. The benefits of enrolling your child in martial arts are numerous but the most important thing to remember is that your little one will be learning valuable life skills. Try observing a few classes to see if martial arts might be something your child will enjoy.

Decision Making

Some people believe the winner of a martial arts match is the athlete with the hardest strike or best techniques. Usually though, the case is that the person did facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

FROM THE DESK OF AL SCHULE Winter is in full force in Rocky View County and we are working diligently behind the scenes to keep the roads clear for residents. While we cannot stop the snow, we can help keep the roads clear for residents. Currently, Rocky View County has priority routes that are cleared as soon as possible and then the secondary routes after that. As a reminder, all safety concerns with snow removal, please contact me directly or call the main office. It is budget time at Rocky View County. We are now reviewing and discussing all budget items for the upcoming year. There are many projects I would like to see committed through the budget and as soon as we have them figured out, I will advise the community. Hello Newsy Neighbour Readers! Anyone who knows me knows I am a bit of a bore on the topic of small business. I can go on and on about the benefits of buying local and supporting your neighbours who help make your community a special place to raise your family. I keep saying this

because, of course, it’s true! As a small business owner myself, I know what it’s like to work long hours and try to raise a family at the same time. Your customers’ smiles are a big part of the reward as anybody who has a small business can attest. On January 18, I was honoured to speak and present at the third annual Newsy Neighbour Readers’ Choice Best In Business Awards, put on by Aleesha Gosling and Denise Geremia. The Awards honour the small businesses in the Strathmore-Langdon-Chestermere area who “went the extra mile” to please their customers. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to the Newsy Neighbour team for all your hard work putting this together and promoting small business at every opportunity. Thanks to the Strathmore Legion for the venue and the High Steppin’ Daddies for the fantastic music. See my Facebook pages for some pictures. I haven’t missed this event yet and I can’t wait to see what Aleesha and Denise have in store for next year. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

I was proud to represent the UCP Caucus in the Women’s March. The reasons I march are maybe different than the person standing beside me. I march to bring awareness to female genital mutilation, honour beatings and killings, domestic violence, sexual harassment, and the equal treatment of women in countries where women are not safe, lack the dignity of human rights and have no voice. These issues transcend politics. Unfortunately, because of the march, I missed a great event in Chestermere engaging our young women: Go Girl. This year’s theme was “Sisters of Sweat”, celebrating exercise and healthy habits. My assistant attended and says kudos are owed to Vicki Klinger of the Chestermere Recreation Centre for a very successful day.

of dollars to travel to the US for treatment that should be available right here in Alberta. Did you know that current research indicates that the “Bull’s Eye” rash only occurs in about 30% of tick-born Lyme infections? Please contact my office if you or someone you know has been affected by Lyme disease. I will be pressing the Government to act.

On January 20, my assistant and I were privileged to attend and I was truly honoured to speak at the Legends gala in Strathmore for the new Strathmore Overnight Shelter that will be opening soon. SOS will fill a critical need for short term accommodation focused on people 16+. SOS President John Hilton O’Brien gave a most moving address. To paraphrase, these people aren’t “them”, they are us. They are our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. They are the man who lives in his truck because he can get a desperately needed job with his truck and had to choose between his truck and his home. Thank you to John, the board, organizers Richard Rodgers, and the community supporters, both individuals and businesses, for their love, compassion and for taking care of those that may be down on their luck, or suffering from addiction and isolation. A particular highlight was seeing the United Steelworkers step up with a $5,000.00 donation. Thanks to Cheadle’s “event dynamo”, Jane Mitton, for organizing this and Legends Pub for hosting it. My assistant said the food was great and I would like to thank the Legends kitchen for their extra effort preparing my vegetarian meal.

Finally, I would like to thank some very special people. These are my husband and my children who give up their mom/wife on a regular basis for public service. I want to thank Pat Shaw, Peter Tindall’s wonderful wife for giving him up to events and long hours as he tries to keep up with my schedule and keep me on track and briefed. I am so grateful for these people, and for their dedication to this province. As always, we love to hear from you.

Following this, we attended the Indus Shothawks fundraiser for a local family in Indus. About a year before, we attended a similar one for a friend of ours stricken with Lyme Disease. With help from very generous neighbours, he was able to travel to the United States for treatment. The result: he has gained back over 40 pounds, looks great, and has his life back. His wife has her husbands’ back and his children have their father back. Imagine watching a family member literally wasting away. There seems to be a “blind spot” surrounding Lyme Disease diagnosis and treatment here. People are commonly told there is “no Lyme Disease in Alberta”. Who knew ticks could read maps? There is no justification for people with Lyme having to spend thousands

Speaking of organizations who help our neighbours, I attended the Robbie Burns Dinner for The Homeless at the Drop in Centre in Calgary put on by the St. Andrews Caledonian Society, and had the privilege of performing with my son some of our favourite Robbie Burns songs along with the band “After the Storm”.

If you weigh 200 pounds on Earth, you’ll be only 76 pounds on Mars. You’re not overweight, you’re just not on the right planet.

New Year… New Rules

|PRIDE |PASSION |PURPOSE

As we welcome in the start of 2018, we can look forward to new hope, new beginnings, new opportunities, and yes, new changes to the mortgage rules. With that said, we have already experienced a lot of changes to the way mortgage financing is obtained since October of 2016, but until this point, these changes seem to have had the biggest impact on potential first time home buyers, or clients who have had less than 20% of the purchase price to be used as the down payment. Now the “stress test” has come around full circle, and regardless of how much money you have access to for a down payment, your ability to qualify for mortgage financing will be based on the 5 year Canadian Benchmark Rate (5.14% at the time this article was written), or by adding 2% to the current contract rate for the desired term chosen.

The Lowest Interest Rates,

GUARANTEED!! Purchase - Refinance - Transfers - Equity Lending Spousal Buyouts - Debt Consolidaon - Second Homes Revenue & Vacaon Properes - New to Canada Self Employed Applicants - Bankruptcy - Foreclosures Clients With Bruised or Poor Credit

So, what does this mean in the grand scheme of things? Funny enough, clients have been qualifying for variable rate mortgages and fixed rate term mortgages of 4 years or less by using the 5-year Canadian Benchmark Rate for years. Again, it didn’t matter what the loan to value was going to be, but if you wanted a shorter fixed term or a variable rate mortgage, this was and has been the process that has been used for the longest time.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT

So once the dust settles in the early part of 2018, and with any luck, we won’t have any additional rule changes imposed for the next little while (at least), the challenge will be to understand these rules and how they impact you as an existing mortgage holder, someone looking to purchase a new home, or perhaps you want to refinance your mortgage for any number of reasons. This is where speaking with the right mortgage professional can make all the difference.

Save THOUSANDS in

unnecessary interest!

There are basically three classifications of mortgages…insured, insurable and uninsured, and they all come with different mortgage interest rates, depending on what the loan to value will be. If you already own your home, and you purchased your property prior to October 2016, your options for renewal and transfers will be different than what they will be if you purchased your home after October 2016. Some banks only offer one interest rate for each type of mortgage, whereas other lenders offer lower interest rates depending on how much of a down payment a client may have, or how much equity exists in the client’s existing home. If you speak with a mortgage specialist that understands the various options that are available, it can make a big difference in your interest rate and how much you can save over the life of your mortgage.

Tips For Selling Your Home Unlike other things that you may own, you can never take selling your home lightly. A house is a big commodity, one that is worth a lot of money. Before you even think about selling your home, you should put a lot of thought and consideration into it. Although you may want to sell your home - you should make sure that you do it the right way. The first thing you should do when you are thinking of selling your home is to hire yourself a qualified real estate agent who knows the neighborhood. An agent who knows your neighborhood will known the ideal price for your home, and help you sell it at the ideal price. If your home is priced right for the neighborhood, chances are it will sell. If it is priced too high, you might not get any offers or anyone interested in buying the home. Once you have a real estate agent, you and your agent will need to develop a strategy. You’ll need to decide on the price and how long you will leave it on the market before you think about a reduction. You’ll also need to discuss his commission as well, which will help to avoid any misunderstandings in the future. If you talk about these types of things when you first start out selling your home, you’ll find the entire process to go much smoother.

403.630.0384 587.717.0663 403.540.0201 403.585.3389 403.902.0440

403.902.0440

All Your Real Estate Needs In some cases, you may run out of time before you are able to sell your home. In this situation, you may want to rent out your home. When you rent out your home, you may also be able to strike a deal with renters that your home is available for showing. To make the house accessible to potential buyers, you may want to offer your renters a lower price. This way, they will be more inclined to make the house available for potential buyers. Keep in mind that selling your home will take you some time. You can also sell it yourself if you prefer, without a real estate agent. This can save you quite a bit of money as well, as you won’t have to pay a real estate agent. If you are planning to go this route, you should make sure that you know the value of your home and you know the neighborhood. You can put a “for sale by owner” sign in the yard, and list your home in local newspapers, and on the Internet as well. This way, you’ll get your home out to the market of potential buyers. Homes that are for sale by the owner are always great for buyers - as they can deal with the owner directly and not have to worry about dealing with any real estate agents.
