FEELING VS FUNCTION: Are You Healthy? Many people, when asked the question, “Are you healthy?” have to think about how they feel before answering the question. If they feel good, they say “yes”. If they don’t feel good, they say “no”. My questions for you are: Can you feel sick and still be healthy? Can you feel fine and be sick?

t h g i l e h t n i Let he heat! block t

WARRANTY!

Take the case of food poisoning. Your body knows it must get rid of the poison or there will be serious consequences. You feel horrible and spend your time in the closest bathroom, yet your body is responding in a very healthy way. It is doing everything it can to get rid of the poison in your body. This is a case where you feel bad, yet your body is functioning exactly as it should. In the case of many chronic illnesses, the problem could be there long before you have any symptoms. The condition is slowly building and you are unaware until later on. For instance, in many patients with heart disease, the first symptom is a major hearth attack (which can often be fatal). This means you are not healthy, even though you may feel fine. So if we can’t judge proper health on feelings, then we must judge it on the functions of the body. Since your nervous system (which is located largely in close proximity to your spine) controls all functions in your body, chiropractors focus on making sure your nervous system (brain, spinal cord and nerves) and spine are functioning properly. When your spine and nervous system are healthy, your whole body is healthier. This means that chiropractors can not only help people with back and neck pain, but they can also help people with a weak immune system, acid reflux, constipation, insomnia, and many more health conditions.

GET YOUR ESTIMATE! + SUNROOMS VISIT OUR WEBSITE

naturallightpatiocovers.com

So the next time you have a pain or symptom, think about what may be malfunctioning inside your body. If you feel fine, yet are living an unhealthy life, think about what problems may be building that you are unaware of. Chiropractors can help you if you have symptoms and they can also help you if you don’t. One major reason for seeing a chiropractor is for wellness and prevention. If you aren’t already under chiropractic care, you may want to consider trying it out. Dr. Nicole Stordy Langdon Chiropractic. See ad on Page 9

I’m so excited I can hardly write the editor’s note this month. WE ARE FULL GLOSS for the 1ST time in our history. THE NEWSY NEIGHBOUR has grown and changed a lot over the years, remember the days of 32 pages and no gloss at all? Look at us now, we have reached the milestone we have been thinking about since our conception. WE ARE SO PROUD OF OURSELVES. It is all because of you – you all should be proud of yourselves. Our readers and advertisers we consider part of our team – we are ALLTeam Newsy. Aleesha and I went to the Alberta Magazine Conference this past week and we came to realize how special our “Newsy Neighbour” is, there is absolutely no other magazine like ours. Truly altogether different. This very special Wedding Issue happening at this time in our life is such a synchronistic event. No accident’s in the universe. This is another one of those keeper Issues and when you flip through the pages of the magazine you are actually going to have an emotional uplifting feeling. The coming together of all our contributors, artwork and design is absolutely phenomenal. If you are getting married this year this Issue has absolutely everything you need to know, think about, ponder and get excited about – it is AMAZING. I’m not going to mention individual articles or page numbers because you are not going to want to miss a single page in the magazine. Make sure you set aside some time just for you, because you deserve it and because you are part of our team, make sure you give yourself a pat on the back – you make all this possible.

Kathryn, Aleesha and Denise

The ability to concentrate and focus comes from the adequate, steady supply of energy - in the form of glucose in our blood to the brain. Achieve this by choosing whole grains, which release glucose slowly into the bloodstream, keeping you mentally alert throughout the day. Opt for 'brown' cereals, wheat bran, granary bread and brown pasta.

YOUR INNER COMPASS What is life all about? Why are you here? Have you asked yourself these questions? Do you know who you are as a person, really? We all have an internal compass that guides us in our life and when we go against it, there is a reaction. At first, you feel a gentle tugging at the back of your brain; something does not feel right. You feel “off.” If you pay attention to this feeling, the cause or causes will slowly become clear. But if you don’t pay attention, your subconscious will get louder and louder and the bad feelings begin to turn to physical symptoms — you may have bad dreams, difficulty sleeping, stomach issues, illness or even injuries, or self-medicate with alcohol or drugs.

Inside each of us is a compass. Although we can’t see it, it spins and turns in ways we can feel, if only we learn to tune in to it. The purpose of this compass is to guide us safely toward what serves us, what best makes use of our talents and gifts, what shall give us happiness, contentment, or freedom. Most people go through life with no sense of purpose. I think we’re all put on this earth to do something and everyone is given the opportunity to make a difference. But, you have to be willing to search for that purpose. I think that a spiritual journey necessary to find your inner compass. Yet, the percentage of people who embark on a spiritual journey in our society is quite small. A spiritual journey can be explored almost entirely internally. In fact, the larger part of a spiritual journey is something that goes on inside of us. So here are a few questions you might want to ask yourself to gain some clarity on finding your inner compass: • What do I absolutely love and live for? • What brings a sense of joy, ease, and lightness into my life? • When am I most present in my life? (This might be the one most important, if not only question that will enable you to find that inner compass) Eventually, you will make a transition from doing to being. In that moment, you’ll have found your inner compass. Kathryn Hartwell “If we can just let go and trust that things will work out the way they’re supposed to, without trying to control the outcome, then we can begin to enjoy the moment more fully. The joy of the freedom it brings becomes more pleasurable than the experience itself.” ~ Goldie Hawn www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Honeymooners Dreaming of the honeymoon may be one of the best perks of getting married. After the wedding, couples look forward to escaping from family, friends and all the busyness. Activities build to a feverish pitch, cumulating with the wedding day, so the opportunity to relax together is a welcome respite. The honeymoon tradition dates back to the 16th century, historically a time of arranged marriages. This was often the first opportunity for couples to truly have time alone, perhaps fall in love and enter into the physical aspects of their relationships. The literature of that time provides great love stories and some wretched tales. The choices that individuals and couples make during this “sweet” period that may have lasted about a month (the period of a moon) likely set their future direction of their life together. So what happens when the honeymoon is over? Life too quickly returns to normal and can become routine. The drama is over, a situation that some have difficulty adjusting to but others embrace. How then do couples build a life together that thrives? Here are some valuable tips for the new journey you have chosen to take together: •Remember to be friends, not just lovers. Physicality changes over time but friendship, if nourished, grows stronger from shared memories and moments. Committing yourself to a lifetime with someone provides an opportunity to grow together as individuals and a couple. Personal fears and barriers need to come down if this is to happen. •Keep the romance alive and find time for each other. When someone is a priority in our lives, we make time for them. Find ways to have fun together, but make sure that the interests of both individuals are considered. A relationship that leans too heavily in one direction may

topple. • Learn to communicate in each other’s language of love. We all say “I love you” in different ways. Some do so by talking or touching, while others find doing things, big or little, shows their love. It is like learning to speak Portuguese if you are living in Brazil or Portugal. If you don’t take the time to learn the native language, your experience will not be as rich or fulfilling. • Invest in each other. If all you do is withdraw money from your bank account, it will soon be depleted. Regular deposits over time allow for the ebb and flow of life to occur but provide the necessary resources that allow you to stand the test of time as a couple. • Remember, love is more than a feeling. It is a choice and a commitment you make. Situations and people may change dramatically, creating the need for decisions to be re-examined. Long term relationships require tweaking over time to enjoy the journey. A dear friend of mine shared how her parents’ love affair of almost 50 years greatly impacted her view of marriage. Spending time with them allowed me to see why. They have dramatically different personalities: she is a passionate extrovert and he is a calming presence. Now retired, they often spend evenings sitting on their patio enjoying a glass of wine and discussing their days. They may not agree on everything, and I think quite often they don’t; but they’ve learned or chosen to accept the differences and embrace them. They recognize the value of connecting through conversation and small touches. It is inspiring to watch them together and the investment that they continue to make in each other. Seeing them renews a belief that the honeymoon can be the beginning of a journey that lasts a lifetime. The choice is up to you.

If you could find more joy in your marriage, how would that change your life? This month’s Newsy Neighbour is dedicated to weddings, and I thought it would be appropriate to try to speak to you as a member of one of the most sacred and challenging partnerships – a marriage. I have been married to my wonderful husband for 12 years this summer! And, I think like most marriages, it has truly spanned the spectrum of the best of the best all the way to the worst of the worst. There has been times in my marriage that I was sure there was no one happier, more connected to their mate as I was. And there has also been times when I have struggled to find a valid reason to stay a part of such a miserable union. And that spectrum has happened way more than once over the course of the last decade! If you are married, perhaps you can relate to this? One thing you can do to help support your marriage is to begin to notice, daily, the joy that is a natural part of a union. If we begin to practice finding the joy we have in being part of a partnership and a family, the better we will be able to ride the roller coaster ride that comes with being married. Here are a few practices I do to help me find joy in my marriage each and every day. Practice Being Present: • This is truly one of the simplest and most difficult of all of these. It is, however, the one that will make each of these following ideas work. Giving your full attention to your partner when you are with them is a simple (not easy) key to finding joy in each moment. We spend a lot of our time wrapped up in our heads - reliving the past, mentally working on a project, thinking ahead to the future, mulling over expectations and end up spending a lot of our time together distracted. • Try this: Next time you are with your partner, give them your full attention. Start with your breath. Breathe in, and breathe out, and be aware of that process. Notice when your mind is somewhere else, or you are thinking of what to say next, or if you are bored. And then give all of your attention to your time together. Try it. Repeatedly. Cultivate a Beginners Mind: • When you first begin your life together, there is a sense of innocence and discovery that is so joyful. But the six hundredth time you have woken up to morning breath staring you in the face... that is a little less exciting. Cynicism and boredom are the bane to joyful experience. • Try this: Every experience you have with your partner today, pretend it is the first time you have ever had it. Whatever it is that you do together – be it greeting one another at the door, cooking a meal, putting the kids to bed, or driving somewhere together – pretend that you have never done it before – and notice the joy you will find in even the most mundane of activities. There is power in this practice. Feel it All: • You know you have heard it enough; it is a cliché... you can’t feel joy

without pain. Yet it is so very true. I heard this not too long ago and it has sat with me since - when you dull the experience of pain you also dull the experience of joy. I think that forgiveness is one of the most important qualities of a marriage, if not the most. Until you have acknowledged your pain or hurt, how can you let go of it? In our society we are often encouraged to ignore or dismiss or cover up the uncomfortable parts. And in this day and age, it is all too prevalent to see a marriage end because of hurt and anger and fear left for too long. • Try this: When you are next overwhelmed with emotion, give yourself the permission to FEEL it. Find a quiet place, give yourself a time limit if you need, sit or lay quietly with attention on your breath and then give yourself the time to truly allow the emotion to move through you. And then, when you are ready, practice letting it go. Your marriage does not need to be defined by the emotions you have; you are having an experience. Give yourself permission to experience hurt and you will more easily give yourself room to forgive and to experience joy. Practice Gratitude: • Gratitude is medicine for the soul. We tend to take for granted the abundance that already exists in our life, because we are so focused on that which (we believe) is missing, or wrong, or out of our control. When you tune into the good that exists in your life and experiences, even in those that hurt or are uncomfortable, you will experience more joy each day, lower stress levels and increase your own esteem of yourself and your life. • Try this: Spend 5 minutes each evening writing down 5 things about your partner/marriage/life that you are grateful for - even if it’s as small as a putting the toilet seat down or as huge as being grateful for the forgiveness extended to you for a hurt you incurred. Make it a habit, and your habit will change how you view your partner and your marriage. I sometimes look around at my life in wonder: this life partner that loves me despite my faults, the hard times that we have stuck through to emerge back into the light, the family that we have created together. Daily life as a married couple is often made up of the mundane aspects of life. All of it is made more joyful when I take the time to practice these four things. Practice being aware of it and this joy can be there for you, even when times are hard... Joy that has the potential to fill out all the corners of your life and lift you up like hot air filling a balloon. Please give these a try today. Share with me if you have tried them in the past, if they help you or where you struggle with it. And if you have other things that you do that help you to find joy in your marriage, let me know! There is a vast repertoire of tools out there, these four are only a few. We need only to find the ones that work for us and put them into practice. Joy already exists - we need only to tune into it. Namaste, Becky

Flower Symbolization F

lowers can have a variety of symbolic meanings. They commonly represent love, affection, commemoration, resurrection, life and innocence. To gaze upon a beautiful, brightly coloured fresh flower arrangement is to experience pure emotion. Depending on the colour of the arrangement or bouquet, the emotion one feels will be slightly different. From the deep passionate red of a rose to the elegant white of a calla lily, to the exuberance concentrated in a bouquet of golden tulips, the colour of flowers sends an emotional message. Over the centuries, these messages have been written down and exchanged as the symbolic meaning flowers express. When it is time to pick your beautiful flowers for your wedding, this list may help you with your choice. The Good Things Marriage Can Offer

• I appreciate waking up and having someone call me beautiful. • I appreciate that I have a partner that I can lean on when I am hurting or scared. •I appreciate that I have someone to tell my most intimate secrets to without judgment. •I appreciate the little jokes throughout the day that brighten my mood. •I appreciate having someone to share the challenges life can bring raising children.

•I appreciate the father he is to my children. •I appreciate that he always makes sure we have everything we need and a little more. • I appreciate that he is still by my side, loving me, even though I tried to destroy that love because I thought I was not worthy. •I appreciate the strength and comfort he brings me. •I appreciate he chose me to share his life with. •I appreciate that I have been given the chance to recognize what I really have instead of concentrating on what I didn’t have. --Sbeatty

Wedding Superstitions We’ve all heard the common rhyme used when someone gets married, Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue, but what does it mean? Wearing “something old” represents the bride’s past, while the “something new” symbolizes the couple’s happy future. The bride is supposed to get her “something borrowed” from someone who is happily married in the hope that some of that person’s good fortune rubs off on her. “Something blue” denotes fidelity and love. Good Luck and Bad Luck 1. Hey, brides; tuck a sugar cube into your glove -- according to Greek culture, the sugar will sweeten your union. 2. The English believe a spider found in a wedding dress means good luck. Yikes! 3. In English tradition, Wednesday is considered the “best day” to marry, although Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. 4. The groom carries the bride across the threshold to bravely protect her from evil spirits lurking below. 5. Saturday is the unluckiest wedding day, according to English folklore. Funny -- it’s the most popular day of the week to marry! 6. Ancient Romans studied pig entrails to determine the luckiest time to marry. 7. Rain on your wedding day is actually considered good luck, according to Hindu tradition!

8. For good luck, Egyptian women pinch the bride on her wedding day. Ouch! 9. Middle Eastern brides paint henna on their hands and feet to protect themselves from the evil eye. Find out about Muslim wedding rituals. 10. Peas are thrown at Czech newlyweds instead of rice. 11. A Swedish bride puts a silver coin from her father and a gold coin from her mother in each shoe to ensure that she’ll never do without. Learn more about Swedish wedding traditions. 12. A Finnish bride traditionally went door-to-door collecting gifts in a pillowcase, accompanied by an older married man who represented long marriage. 13. Moroccan women take a milk bath to purify themselves before their wedding ceremony. See more Moroccan wedding customs. 14. In Holland, a pine tree is planted outside the newlyweds’ home as a symbol of fertility and luck. It’s got a ring to it! 15. Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was once thought that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart. 16. About 70% of all brides sport the traditional diamond on the fourth finger of their left hand. 17. Priscilla Presley’s engagement ring was a whopping 3 1/2-carat rock surrounded by a detachable row of smaller diamonds. 18. Diamonds set in gold or silver became popular as betrothal rings among wealthy Venetians toward the end of the fifteenth century.

19. In the symbolic language of jewels, a sapphire in a wedding ring means marital happiness. 20. A pearl engagement ring is said to be bad luck because its shape echoes that of a tear. 21. One of history’s earliest engagement rings was given to Princess Mary, daughter of Henry VIII. She was two years old at the time. 22. Seventeen tons of gold are made into wedding rings each year in the United States! 23. Snake rings dotted with ruby eyes were popular wedding bands in Victorian England -- the coils winding into a circle symbolized eternity. 24. Aquamarine represents marital harmony and is said to ensure a long, happy marriage. 25. Queen Victoria started the Western world’s white wedding dress trend in 1840 -- before then, brides simply wore their best dress. 26. In Asia, wearing robes with embroidered cranes symbolizes fidelity for the length of a marriage. 27. Ancient Greeks and Romans thought the veil protected the bride from evil spirits. Brides have worn veils ever since. 28. On her wedding day, Grace Kelly wore a dress with a bodice made from beautiful 125-year-old lace. 29. Of course, Jackie Kennedy’s bridesmaids were far from frumpy. She chose pink silk faille and red satin gowns created by AfricanAmerican designer Ann Lowe (also the creator of Jackie’s dress). 30. In Japan, white was always the colour of choice for bridal ensembles -- long before Queen Victoria popularized it in the Western world.

Why I Love Being Married I consider myself very lucky that for 30 years, I’ve been married to my best friend and soul mate. To this day, I still look forward to coming home to my Lady, my Wife. We can still make each other laugh. I’m the first to say that without my Wife in my life, I would be lost. Yes, we’ve had problems. We even have had to seek counseling. But we both were determined that we would make our life together work. We made a commitment to each other when we first were married that divorce was out of the question. Were there times when neither of us thought that maybe a divorce would be best? Of course. I don’t think that anyone who’s been married for years hasn’t thought that. But the beauty of marriage is that there’s always a way to make your commitment and love for each other help you to work out problems together. All I know is that I’m very lucky to have my best friend & soul mate to share my life with. --warl ordofks Holding each other up during the difficult times in the marriage, such as job loss, illness, any number of things that have happened over the 45 years we have been together. Whatever happened, we just put our heads together and figured out what to do to make things better. We never blamed each other for our problems. --oceans daughter

Five Lessons to a Healthy, Happy, Long Term Relationship or Marriage

A healthy relationship needs to stay in the here and now. Complement, encourage and learn from one another. It is about supporting and being there for each other. After 27+ years in a long term relationship, I realize that I am a real person; both making decisions for myself and then with my partner. Even after so many years I still need to practice trusting, communicating, listening and unconditionally letting my partner be who they truly are. As a couple, we must never give up on each other. It is important to enjoy what today can bring in order to dream of tomorrow. Relationships evolve and change as the individuals involved are constantly learning and growing. So if you are starting a new relationship, are in an existing one or taking the next big step (marriage), practice these five lessons. Live, love, and laugh; for now and always!

By: Cynthia Barnesky

Even though I have been married for over 25 years and have two adult daughters, I am not an expert on marriage or relationships; but the experience does enable me to help others with their family related relationships. There are 5 important things to remember and learn as you grow old together. They may be the key to a happy, healthy, loved-filled and successful long term relationship or marriage! 1. Don’t try to change each other. If you are starting to change to make your partner happy, you are really losing your authentic self. Stay true to yourself and the love you share will grow stronger. 2. Recognize you are two individuals who have decided to share their lives. Respect the things you have in common and the differences. It is alright to have two different opinions and at times there will need to be negotiation. This ultimately brings you to a shared ground which represents a part of each of you. 3. Communication and listening are the cornerstone to a successful relationship. This is one of the most challenging areas as we are either a good listener or a good communicator; it is hard to be both. Awareness of which one you are weaker in means you need to challenge yourself to practice that particular skill. In all personal and also professional relationships, good communication and listening can make all the difference. We all want to feel heard; so it is important to not interrupt when someone is talking. Communicating your true feelings helps you feel lighter and can also let your partner know exactly how you feel about a situation. 4. Trust in yourself no matter who or what temps you. Remember, nothing happens unless we allow it to happen! There is always a choice; so ask yourself, “What is the consequence?” Ultimately, it comes down to your beliefs and it is important to communicate those beliefs to your partner before getting too involved. Make sure that you both have the same values, as this will make it easier to trust each other. 5. Self-love comes first before you can share unconditional love with others. What does it mean to say that we “love” someone? It should mean that our feelings are open and honest, with no strings attached. We are freely giving and receiving love. When in a relationship, we unconditionally accept the other person for who they are. There is no judgement, pointing a finger of blame or bring up the past. 30

The Shoe Game

This hilarious game is a great way for guests to get to know you better as you learn how much you really know about each other. Place two chairs back-to-back on the dance floor. Remove both of your shoes, then trade a shoe with your new spouse so that you’re holding one of each. Then, have a designated person ask a series of questions about the two of you and your relationship. After each question, hold up the shoe of the person you think has the best answer to the question. Here is some good questions to ask: 1. Who is older? 2. When you first met, who made the first move? 4. Who is the better driver? 5. Who got better grades in school? 8. Who is smarter? 9. Who is better at keeping secrets? 11. Who will be doing the cooking? 12. Who is more likely to get injured? 14. Who is more likely to be running late? 16. Who is the better dresser? 17. Who is better looking? 18. Who said ‘I love you’ first? 19. Who starts the argument? 20. Who is first to say “I’m sorry?” 21. Who wears the pants in your relationship? 22. Who spends more money? 23. Who is going to pay the bills? 24. Who will be most likely to wake up grumpy? 26. Who is more likely to get lost? 27. Who is messier? 29. Who has the smelliest feet? 30. Be honest – The world is complicated enough without making things more difficult by being misleading or lying to your partner. It seems like a simple request, but sometimes the fear of rejection can lead us to bend the truth. It might seem like a small fib or omission of detail at the time, but when the truth is later revealed it can lead to a very hurtful and challenging situation which could have been avoided altogether by just being upfront and telling the truth. Practice being honest with both yourself and your partner. Best of luck in your marriage and remember to schedule in a lot of fun and laughter together!

Child Safety & Protection Measures “Teach your children to trust their own feelings, and assure them that they have the right to say NO to what they sense is wrong!”

Here you will find some very wise advice to help you bring your relationship back to that wonderful place of bliss, or something like it. Making the decision to get married is “the big one”; the decision that will change your life forever and ever. How do you know for sure that this is the person you should marry, and will you still feel the same in two years? What about 20 years? Regardless of what your heart (or biological clock) says, you do not need to be in a rush to get married. It is important to take the time to prepare yourself for such a huge step. Are you emotionally ready to get married? You should question your reasons for wanting to marry this person. If it is to make you happy or relieve loneliness, you may find yourself disappointed after the wedding. Or if you have emotional wounds from your past that you have never dealt with, perhaps you should seek counseling about those issues before proceeding with marriage. Couples also need to take time to prepare themselves financially for marriage. Love can hold people together through tough times, but it doesn’t pay the rent. When you marry someone, their credit history and debts become yours too. Be sure your finances are in order and try to pay off any large debts before you get married. So, you have gone through with the wedding and have been married for a couple of years. Maybe your life is not going as planned, maybe the excitement, passion and fun has worn off… what then? Trust me, no one has the perfect marriage and it is truly a relationship you have to work at every single day, some days in small ways and other days in big ways. Here 34

you will find some very wise advice to help you bring your relationship back to that wonderful place of bliss, or something like it (I hope).

Touch as often as possible. Hold hands. Touch your husband on the arm when you’re both making your morning coffee. Place your hand on his cheek when he kisses you good night. Think about these little points of contact as love "marks" that stay with him throughout the day. At the end of a long day, pamper each other with foot and hand massages while you’re watching your favourite TV shows on the couch. The physical contact creates happy hormone oxytocin, and non-sexual physical contact keeps you feeling adored by each other. You’d be surprised how long time married, whose relationships have grown stale, never touch each other anymore in these little adoring ways.

Talk about your early days of dating. Rather than bringing up the past in a wistful sense ("why don't we ever do that anymore..."), express appreciation for all the ways that your spouse has helped you. For example, you could say something like, "I was just thinking about that romantic dinner you planned by the fireplace on our third date. That was really wonderful." It's an ego boost for him and it shows that you value his best efforts. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

Cook together. Make it an occasional treat to prep a new meal together. The sensory experience of cooking and co-creating a fabulous, romantic dish or snack is way better than popping some toaster tarts in the oven.

Give your spouse alone time with their pals. Even if your husband's friends love you, there are still some events he’ll be invited to — like going to a game — as a guy’s night out. Don't make him feel guilty about leaving you home alone by pouting and checking in with him constantly while he's out (and yes, guys do this too!). Maintain separate social lives and be supportive of one another.

Drop your old issues. We all have scars and damage from our dating days and from our families, but don't use an old fight as a weapon in a new one. It's unfair to throw unresolved issues at one another — drop those sensitivities by avoiding hot button issues that you've already discussed (and hopefully resolved). If you're still having trouble letting it go, consider journaling or talking to a counselor to prevent these bygones from weakening your marriage.

Fight fairly. Avoid using absolutes like "always" or "never" to accuse your spouse when you’re revved up and kind of irrational during a particularly bad argument (i.e. "You never listen to me!"). Within the argument, establish a "take it back" code whenever either of you says something you don't truly mean. Remind your husband that you love him and stay focused on finding a solution, which opens the door for a compromise. You both need to know when to apologize; love does mean saying "I'm sorry" sometimes.

Have a sense of humour. Don’t be uptight or overly sensitive, making it impossible for your spouse to playfully tease you if you do something silly. If you’re always a raw nerve, he'll feel like he's walking on eggshells, which makes you a chore. Laugh off a joke to show him that you're a carefree partner who doesn't make him nervous to kid around with.

Know when to listen (without offering advice). Sometimes, you or your partner just needs to vent and spill out all the frustrations of the day. Since your husband loves you and wants you to feel better, he might give suggestions that can produce the opposite effect intended. It's easy to turn your stress against him ("Don't you think I already thought of that?"). Let him know when you just want to be heard and comforted — no crisis intervention necessary — and you've just created a strong tool in your marriage.

Be financially responsible. Money is one of the top marriage stressors, especially in these challenging financial times. You both need the security of knowing that you’re each paying bills on time, and not making www.thenewsyneighbour.com

unnecessary purchases. Create a joint account for bills but also keep separate accounts for your own play money, and, of course, make sure you're both socking away some money in your savings to contribute towards shared future goals. Most importantly, be financially honest with one another, no matter what. No secret spending or hiding it from your spouse if you're having trouble paying a bill on time.

Speak well of each other. If you vent to your friends or family members about a fight you had with your husband, they may not forgive him, even after you've forgiven and forgotten. It's a betrayal to trash-talk your spouse to others, even if he made you really mad. Your personal issues need to stay personal so that you don’t create problems in your social and family circle that will only grow worse over time. His family and friends love it when you rave about his awesomeness, just as your loved ones will adore him for speaking highly of you all the time.

Accept that you’ll both have bratty moments. Sometimes when we’re stressed, we get snappy. It happens to everyone, and that ultra-bratty response may even be a surprise to you. So if your spouse replies with a terse comment, don’t pull the pin on a big fight grenade. Just accept it as a sign that he’s stressed and not able to respond more maturely at the moment. And if he blames your bratty remark on PMS, it’s better to walk away than get into a fight over something silly. Apologies can come a little bit later.

Divvy up chores. Division of labour in a marriage is something that marriage counselors handle a lot with couples who are having trouble. You can avoid resentments by simply talking to each other about which household projects you want to take on. Maybe you’re okay with killing the spiders and taking out the trash, and he’s fine with vacuuming. Make your own plan without any male vs. female labels, and then — this is important — sit down to discuss which household chores are annoying you, which you want to trade, and which you want to hire someone to do...like the dusting and vacuuming. Done!

And, last but not least, remember to be courteous, kind, trustworthy, respectful, loyal, appreciative, understanding, realistic and caring. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-13 Kathryn Hartwell References: journey4life.com, yourtango.com, marrigebuilders.com 35

Amalia’a Oils Amalia is a stay at home Mom who has recently started dabbling in the social work world again. She was raised with the knowledge and benefits of natural alternatives and her passion in this area continues to grow as she strives to provide her own family with the same values. As she experiences the health and overall well-being essential oils has to offer her family, her desire to share this information with the world continues to grow. Contact Amalia @ amzarok@gmail.com So I know I stated in last month’s issue that Frankincense would be highlighted this month…however, I just could not resist the chance to be a part of this months “wedding fever” theme! I have compiled a list of some (or all) of the oils one would want in preparation for their big day. Weddings are a wondrous, joyful event that radiates love and happiness. However, whether you are planning a wedding big or small, there always seem to be hiccups along the way. I’m hoping that if I can arm the happy couple with a “Wedding 911” survival kit, those hiccups will seem easier to deal with and therefore allow the happy couple and all of their closest friends and relatives to enjoy that special day. I have broken the oils down into three categories; Health and Beauty, Relationship Maintenance, and Stress. Some categories will have a few options of oils to use; this does not mean you need all of them; just one will do. (Unless of course you wanted them all, which is ok too!).

Health and Beauty

Immune System – there is nothing more frustrating than battling a cold while accomplishing the fine balancing act of planning a wedding, working, and maintaining a healthy social life. Here are some recommendations to strengthen your immune system and help those burntout adrenals: • Thieves – Apply to bottoms of feet daily to protect you from viruses, diffuse in your home, or place cotton balls soaked in a few drops in your vents to keep the air in your home germ-free, and ensure that none of those lovely relatives and wedding planners bring their sickness into your home! • Cedarwood – get your sleep!!! Although sleeping will feel like number one million and twenty on your To Do list, it is absolutely vital to allow you to enjoy the process and your day. If you have trouble shutting your brain off or getting quality sleep, cedarwood may be your new best friend. Cedarwood is known as the “sleepy oil” as it stimulates the release of melatonin into your body. Before bed, place a drop on your forehead between your eyebrows, as well as a drop on each wrist. Sweet dreams! 36

Glowing Skin – Many brides will spend countless hours scouring bridal magazines, where they are exposed to perfectly airbrushed, glowing model brides. Unfortunately, I cannot offer the airbrushed look, but there are some oils that will help you get that beautiful, glowing skin. Here is the recipe: • Frankincense, myrrh and coconut oil – find a small glass container (loonie store is a great place for these) and add 2-4 drops of each essential oil and some coconut oil. Mix it up and apply to skin daily to get glowing, healthy skin. Bonus: Apply to breasts to keep them healthy. Weight Maintenance – a part of me struggles with adding this section because I really would love to be able to tell each bride that she is beautiful the way she is and her soon-to-be husband feels the same way. However, I too was once a bride and I remember this feeling really important to me. Fortunately, I was able to do it in a healthy way and really did feel great about myself that day, not to mention how much healthier I was feeling. So I offer this oil as a way to help maintain a healthy diet and exercise: • Grapefruit – Grapefruit is what I sometimes call a “sleeper oil” as it has so many amazing benefits and is on the low end of the money scale! Grapefruit essential oil has been known to help with weight loss (by curbing appetite and satiating cravings), fluid retention, depression, anxiety, cellulite, migraines, stress, and indigestion and is very uplifting. Benefits from grapefruit oil can be received by direct inhalation, applied topically or diffused.

Stress

At some point during your nuptial journey, stress is almost guaranteed to rear its ugly head, even to those who normally handle stress well. Here are some suggestions of oils that may work for you: • Lavender, Frankincense, Roman Chamomile, Ylang Ylang, Peppermint or any of the Citrus oils – any of these oils can diffused, or directly inhaled to receive full benefits. It might be nice to keep one in your purse and when needed, apply a few drops into the palms of your hand, rub together and cup your hands over your mouth and nose and inhale three deep breaths.

Relationship

Maintaining a healthy relationship with your partner is absolutely vital to having a blissful wedding day. It is so easy let this part of the journey take a back seat, thinking that after the wedding you will have a chance to reconnect. Your partner is the reason this is all happening in the first place and it is so important to care for and nurture that relationship. I have included a few different options to help keep the passion and connection between you and your partner during this blissful and stressful time. www.thenewsyneighbour.com

For Men

• Black Pepper - is known to increase circulation and libido in men. • Sandalwood - has a rich, sweet, warm and woody aroma that makes it enticing, erotic and soothing. No wonder sandalwood is one of the main ingredients in a large number of men’s colognes!

For Women

• Ylang Ylang - has a sweet, soft, flowery fragrance that has made it a long-time romantic favourite. This oil may help elevate sexual energy and enhance relationships. It is a great oil to diffuse so both can receive the benefits it has to offer. Fun Fact: the soft yellow petals of the Ylang Ylang flower are often strewn across marriage beds in Indonesia. • Jasmine – the floral fragrance of jasmine is warm and exotic and has been used throughout history for romance and attraction. The essential oil may help balance the feminine energy for the body. It is also a great oil to diffuse. • Rose – Rose is known as “Queen of the Flowers” and is probably the most common scent associated with love, romance and Valentine’s Day. This oil is known as the “heart chakra.” It is highly romantic and may help balance the hormones of the female reproductive system. Rose oil has also been used for centuries for skin care and is ideal for dry or aging skin. To receive the benefits of the rose essential oil, put a couple of drops on the palms of your hand and rub in a clockwise direction, cup your hands over your nose and mouth and slowly inhale three deep breaths. Place a drip directly on your heart center, behind ears, on wrists and womb center. Is also wonderful in a bath. Well there you have it; my quick breakdown of some oils you may want to stock up on to help enjoy your wedding day journey! I truly wish you all the happiness in the world and may your wedding day tell the story or your unique relationship! Questions To Ponder Questions get us thinking; they challenge us and convict us. And while I know you and your spouse won’t ask yourselves these questions every day, it might be good to print this out and put it on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror, or bedside table as a constant reminder that can inspire you in your marriage. Did we say, “I love you” and hug each other? Did we compliment more than we criticized one another? Did we listen to each other more or lecture more? Did we go on a date and just have fun? Did we talk well about one another to other people? Did we focus more on understanding each other rather than trying to be understood? Did we ask, “How can I serve you today?” Did we warmly greet one another when we walked in the door? Did we model what a marriage should look like to our children?

The Doctor told Will that he should start a fitness program... Day 2 1) Drag my heels constantly. 2) Push my luck all the time. 3) Make mountains out of mole hills. 4) Hit the nail on the head regularly. Day 3 1) Bend over backwards. 2) Jump onto the latest bandwagon. 3) Run around in circles all day.

HIIT for Fat Loss People always ask me, “What’s the best thing I can do for fat loss?” My reply is always, High Intensity Intervals, or HIIT. HIIT is effective because it is metabolically taxing, causing you to burn more calories, gain lean mass, and release more growth hormone. The options of HIIT are endless, like strength training, cardio intervals, and sprint training. This type of training is great for the beginner because the intervals can be shorter and still be challenging. This makes it doable and is a great confidence booster for the newbie. Not to mention, HIIT doesn’t require a lot of time. For the most effective use of your interval time, you should perform them with as much maximal effort as possible. I have provided a short full body HIIT work. This workout uses Tabata as the work and recovery times. Here is a brief history on Tabata. The name comes from Dr. Izumi Tabata, a Japanese physician and researcher. He conducted the interval study of 20/10 repeated 8 times. This means 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest repeated 8 times. The study was a success, outperforming the traditional steady state group. It was originally designed for athletes, and each interval was to be done maximal/ failure. If you’re not an athlete or new to exercise, start a little slower; it will still be extremely effec-

tive for building strength and for fat loss. Good luck! And record your repetitions at each interval. Make it a game by trying to do the same number of reps for all 8 intervals.

16 min boot camp (Tabata Style) Tabata is 20 seconds of work followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated 8 times. There are lots of free Tabata timer apps. 1. Always do a 3-5 min warm-up, like jogging on the spot, skipping, or arm & leg circles. 2. Push ups 3. Squats 4. Planks 5. High knees 6. Always cool down and stretch after a workout. *This program may not be for everyone! Please check with your physician before making a lifestyle change or starting any new fitness program Anndee King

How can we get these two generations of workers to communicate and ensure that the knowledge of the past is passed on to the employees of the future? First, we need to throw out the concept that one generation is better than another. Baby boomers will look at younger generations as having a lack of work ethic, being more concerned with their loves outside of work and Millenials may see the Boomers as proud workaholics and less technically advanced and unwilling to learn. The fact of the matter is, it doesn’t matter. Communicating between generations is about recognizing the different viewpoints and challenges each group has and trying to understand them. Each generation needs to realize that not all points apply to all people – there are many Boomers who are great with technology, and many Gen Ys and Millenials who are expert networkers. When you are faced with cross-generational challenges, stop and ask yourself if you are doing everything you can to empathize with the other person.

Bridging the Generational Gap How many of us have thought (on more than one occasion) that our co-workers are from another planet?

Although it may seem that way, the issue could actually be that our coworkers are from a different generation. The baby boomers are getting ready to retire and the new generation of workers are hitting the force. But these two generations have more than just age between them. The way that the new generation of workers look at work is different than their predecessors. Expectations of employers are higher and the scale of work / life balance has dramatically changed. They are motivated by causes and work that makes a difference rather than by loyalty to an organization. They are seen as a generation that will demand work-life balance and flexibility so that work fits into other priorities. This is a highly educated generation that is ethnically and culturally diverse and more accepting of diversity than previous generations. They grew up with technology, so they assume they will have access to it in their workplace and are more apt in technology. They thrive on multitasking and creative problem-solving and seek opportunities to learn.1 Younger workers are looking to have a balance in their lives that include working to live, rather than living to work. This difference in younger employees can create a lack of communication and understanding during training. As the baby boomers retire, many companies will be looking to these younger generations for leadership, but the issue will lie in the information passed down from previous generations. What will happen to the organizational knowledge? Will it retire as well?

Each person within a team has a purpose and if we learn to look at our fellow co-workers in that way, then we will learn to appreciate the different strengths each member has. How can we find these strengths and learn to communicate with one another? Here are a few ideas;2 • Listen. No, I mean really listen. If we let our preconceptions about other generations stop us from hearing new (or old) ideas, we are limiting our potential. • Empathy. Try to understand where your team member is coming from. • Team Building. Get out of the office together. Find a way to connect on a different level and truly understand what every member brings to the team. An example of this would be working with horses to learn more about yourselves and others. (www.equineconnection.ca) • Learn. Everyone has something to learn, just as everyone has something to teach. Be open to every learning opportunity available to you. Even if it is someone who is younger (or older) than yourself. These sound like pretty simple tools, but to truly learn how to communicate is not easy. The challenges ahead of organizations as the new generation moves into the work force will be profound, but by being aware and taking the steps to ensure a smooth transition, organizations can overcome this challenge. Be open to others’ ideas, despite all differences, and respect one another as members of a team. By keeping all of this in mind, we can help to bridge the gap between the generations. Thanks for the Memories!

No, I am not leaving the Newsy Neighbour or my radio show on Newstalk 770, but last month I did say goodbye to a 14 year relationship as sales and sponsorship director with the Olympic Oval at the University of Calgary. It was a relationship that started in the fall of 2000. I was enjoying a summer of unemployment after being fired by Rogers Communication and 66 CFR. I was lying on the beach in Invermere, BC, wondering what I was going to do next! Job prospects in the sports radio business were sparse and I wasn’t sure I even wanted to play radio anymore. Olympian Jacques Thibault was the director of the Olympic Oval. He approached me on the beach, and offered me a job. “We have a short track world cup coming up in six weeks and we need help,” he pleaded. “We have no sponsors and we don’t have a sales or marketing person.” So let me put this into perspective. The Olympic Oval is hosting a major international speed skating competition. It’s happening in six weeks and the director is asking an unemployed radio sportscaster to come in and save the day. The first question was an easy one: “What are your expectations?” “I really don’t have any,” Thibault reasoned. “We don’t have a sponsorship guy and I think you would be perfect for it.” With no expectations on the line, I knew this was the job for me! In a matter of weeks, Husky Energy was on board as the title sponsor. The Calgary Sun and Corus Entertainment signed up as our media partners. TAC Mobility, National Car Rental, Molson Canadian and others soon joined in. Was it a huge financial success? No, but we were able to fill the building and the ISU (International Skating Union) used our template for future World Cup Short Track competitions. The rest, as they say, is history. For the next 13 seasons, my newly established Marketing and Media Company would sign one year contracts with the University of Calgary to handle sales and sponsorship. Over the years, I have seen the Olympic Oval experience so many highs and, unfortunately, a few lows. It was the success of the athletes like Catriona Le May Doan, Cindy Klassen, Jeremy Wotherspoon, Clara Hughes, Denny Morrison, Hayley Wickenheiser, Danielle Goyette and Cassie Campbell that cemented the Oval’s legacy as the medal factory and the fastest ice in the world. Every time one of these athletes stepped on the podium, the staff at the Olympic Oval felt a sense of pride as they were a small part of their success. The Olympic Oval can take great pride in the fact that the last four Canadian flag 42

bearers at the Winter Olympics (Le May Doan, Goyette, Hughes and Wickenheiser) all trained and fine-tuned their skills at the University of Calgary. There is the iconic design of the Oval’s roof, a proud landmark of the city’s landscape and lasting legacy of hosting “The Best Ever” Winter Olympic Games. A roof that leaked from almost the day it opened until it was finally fixed in 2011, thanks to a 9.7 million dollar refurbishment plan. This was a much-needed boost for a world class facility that was hit hard by the economic crash in 2008. The endowment and legacy funds from the 1988 Winter Olympics took a major hit, operating budgets were slashed and good people lost their jobs. These were dark days for the Olympic Oval, however the struggles were short lived and the legacy survives. So why am I walking away from such a positive environment? The timing is right. It’s time to take a small break and re-set, re-charge and refocus on a new adventure. It’s time to pass the torch and let some new ideas flow. Besides, summer is coming and it’s time to lie on the beach! 40 Years of RILEYS! It’s April, and that means the golf season is right around the corner. On Monday, April 28th, the prestigious Calgary Golf and Country Club will host the draw for the 40th Anniversary of the Riley’s Best Ball event. This event is one of the highlights on the Calgary Golf Association schedule. For the first time ever, it will feature a sit down dinner as we salute the champions from the past 39 years. I am honoured to be the Master of Ceremonies for the evening as the event will honour my former colleague, Bill Powers. The media/manager trophy will be re-named in Billy’s memory. Due to limited seating, it is essential that you confirm you attendance on your entry form. For more information go to www.calgarygolfassociation.org.

Open-Cockpit Plane

At the county fair, a pilot offered to fly anyone in his old, open-cockpit plane for five dollars. One farmer and his wife, who had never been up in a plane, kept hanging around but couldn’t decide whether to go or not. “Come on,” said the pilot. “I’ll take you up for nothing if you’re a good passenger and don’t do any backseat driving.” The pilot took up the farmer and his wife and he did some pretty fancy flying. When he landed ten minutes later he said to the farmer, “You did very well for your first flight. I didn’t hear a word from you!” “That’s right,” said the farmer. “It was pretty hard. I almost said something back there when my wife fell out.”

Hot & Spicy My Favourite – Fabulous – Fantastic And Fun Stuff My favourite appetizers are hot and spicy recipes; they are fantastic and offer your guests something a little different to experience. Cultures across the globe, including Chinese, Indian and Mexican, have been pursuing the pleasures of spicy food for centuries. The primary source of culinary spice is the pepper. According to numerous studies, the heatcreating component of peppers, known as capsaicin, has several beneficial effects on the body. These effects include reducing inflammation, oxidizing fat, providing gastric relief, preventing sinus infections and even killing cancer cells. Furthermore, spicy foods encourage perspiration, which can help cool the body when the temperature is hot. So instead of serving ice cream and other frozen treats on the next hot day, try whipping up some easy spicy appetizers. Whether you’re looking for a spicy, crispy accompaniment for a dip or some stand-alone snacks, there are plenty crispy appetizer creations to choose from, like: put saltine crackers into a large sealable bag, and then pour in a mixture of oil (about ½ cup), chili powder (1/2 tsp), pepper flakes (1/4 tsp) and some garlic salt or any other one of your favourite seasonings. You will get a feel for the measurements after your first bag – experiment with this. Shake the bag for several minutes and a spicy concoction will soon coat all of the crackers. Bake in a 250 degree oven for 10 – 15 minutes; just keep an eye on them until crispy. For easy spicy appetizers that have more of an Asian influence, you can grill spicy meat skewers. Start by marinating chunks of meat, like beef, pork or chicken, in sweet & spicy hoisin sauce. You can also add spicy seasonings to the marinade, like black pepper, cayenne, pepper flakes

and chili powder. After a few hours of marinating -- the longer the better -- thread your chunks of meat onto skewers and throw them on the grill. For added flavour, sprinkle on some sesame seeds and chopped green onion. To alleviate some of the spicy heat, provide cooling dips like a cucumber and yogurt dip or a creamy ranch dressing. If you are a bit more adventurous, try these fabulous recipes. I’m making the Thai Brittle as soon as I finish this article!

Time For A New Mattress? Did you hear about the person who paid $33.000.00 for a mattress? OK… it was a celebrity so we can’t really expect too much, but… for a mattress? What’s even more fun, is that that’s nowhere near the top of the mattress price game. It’s probably safe to surmise that most of us reading this will not be dropping 30 grand on a mattress in the near future. It’s probably also safe to surmise that having just come through a daylight saving time change, the days getting longer and (theoretically) spring approaching, many of us should be looking sideways at our mattress or ‘sleep system’. The majority of credible studies are showing that sleep is critical to our mental and physical health. Equally important are results showing that we are not getting enough quality (restful & rejuvenating) sleep. Many of us cut sleep time figuring we’ll simply pay it back later. Think of your friendly neighbourhood loan shark; the interest rate on sleep loss is about the same – interestingly enough, the results of defaulting on repaying can be similar as well. Popular Science March 2014 edition (or www.Popsci.com) section on sleep is worth a serious read. Medical issues aside, if you can’t seem to get a good night’s sleep, if you wake up tired, stiff and sore, your mattress may be the problem. The real life span of a mattress is about 8 to 10 years. Even if the springs feel fine, there are numerous issues in an older mattress that can prevent a restful sleep. A mattress that supports us evenly, reduces 48

403-361-9838

pressure areas and allows us a deeper, uninterrupted sleep is critical to our and our significant others’ physical and mental health. Check out a mattress; - Unless you sleep alone, bring your partner along. Either one can do the initial research but both should be in on the final selection. - Take a few minutes to lie down on a mattress. Try the sleep position you are in when you wake up in the morning. - Ask about the mattress, its manufacturer, construction and features, including any environmental concerns. Is it Canadian made? - Ask what makes this mattress a good choice for you. Note that price is not always an indicator of the ‘right’ mattress but at the same time, you still get what you pay for and a permanent sale price is not a sale. Talk over your sleep support needs with your local independent bedding retailer. They have to know their products and maintain current knowledge in the sleep system issues world. Remember, an independent retailer chooses their floor stock, so ask why they have chosen the floor selection they have and then try them out. On the studies and results side, remember that one study doesn’t make it a rule or even correct. Take a critical look at who funded and conducted the study and, of course, who benefits. Check out www.askforevidence.com and ‘Is That a Fact’ by Canadian author Mark Battersby. Staying on the slightly lighter side, drop in online to: Marina Hyde – Guardian. Clean your windows for pennies.

Here’s how to whip up high powered glass cleaner for pennies. Pour 1 gallon (3.7 liters) warm water into a bucket. Add 1 cup white vinegar and 1 teaspoon grease-cutting dishwashing liquid, and then stir. If you’re cleaning a lot of large windows, apply the glass cleaner with a squeegee straight out of the bucket. Otherwise, pour the mixture into plastic squirt bottles. Easy and cheap!

Clean your sink with herbs.

One of the worst things about porcelain sinks is that they scuff so easily. Forget the Ajax. Instead, Linda Mason Hunter, coauthor of the

book Green Clean, recommends an herbal bath. Steep several bunches of rosemary or thyme in hot water for a few hours, then strain. Top up the sink with water, pour in the mixture, and let it sit overnight. In the morning, you’ll find a glistening white sink that smells like an herb garden.

Dirty disposer.

To remove grease buildup in your garbage disposal, periodically grind a handful of ice cubes mixed with 1/2 cup baking soda. Together, the powder and cubes will safely scour the inside of the disposer. Flush any residue by plugging the sink and filling it with 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 cm) of water, then run the disposer while the water drains. Grind lemon peels to freshen the smell.

Peanut Butter Squares

Luscious Joys Cereal Cereal, it seems, has been around since the beginning of time. Tell me one person who has not gotten up in the middle of the night to have a bowl of cereal? Ohh, how I long for the days when I would eat Captain Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Frosted Flakes or my all-time favourite, Lucky Charms. Now, I have oatmeal or a healthy granola with yogurt for breakfast. Oh, to be young again and not have to worry about calories, fat or sugar!! Forget it; who cares! You only live once; I’m on a quest for cereal recipes – healthy or not. A little lusciousness every once in a while is not going to hurt, right? Don’t they say everything is good for you in small measures? Enjoy!!

Spring is finally here! Emily Hogan is an interior designer from new and local design company Blyss Interiors. Her strong experience in the window covering industry has inspired her to offer those services to Strathmore and area as well as her savvy & stylish design style. If you have any questions for her call her at 403-901-4467 or email to info@blyssinteriors.ca. She would be happy to hear from you! Spring is finally here! This time of year always gives me the itch to get outside, start cleaning up from the winter and add some bright and happy accents to my home. In doing so, I have come up with some ideas with large impact to refresh your space for spring and to bring on the summer! - First and foremost, de-clutter, edit and purge. Get rid of what has been piling up this winter and store what you no longer love, need or use. Less is always more. - Switch your linens to crisp neutrals; this will instantly give a refreshing face lift and serve as a perfect backdrop to showcase pops of colour with your accessories, such as pillows and throws. - Organize and use your books as your décor; arrange by colour to style your shelving units

Decorating tips.

Use bold fabric patterns in small way. A little on a footstool or accent pillows will go a long way. It won’t overwhelm and it will stand out. This is a good way to use your favourite without having to break the bank buying several yards to cover an entire couch. For large chairs, choose a small print. The chairs are dramatic enough. A small print helps balance that drama and looks more sophisticated.

Seating arrangements.

Avoid the predictable seating arrangement. You know; a sofa, a pair of matching chairs, a coffee table in between… boring! The solution is elegantly simple. It’s a trick designers call the “pull-up chair’ - a non matching chair tossed into the mix to keep the arrangement looking fresh and unique.

Painting tricks.

Add architectural interest to a room. Paint the molding and the trim around windows and doors a shade or two darker than the walls, and paint the window sashes—the sliding parts that carry the glass—an even deeper shade. Guests will ask for the name of the designer you hired!

Update lampshades.

Update with new ones in more contemporary shapes or simply fresh white shades.

- Rotate your artwork selection and/or placement, print some favourite family photos and create a feature gallery wall, and adding a mirror opposite a window will always bounce light around a space. - If you are craftier, create new artwork. Frame or stretch fabric around canvas in colourful and graphic patterns, or bring out the paint and create something all your own.

Blyss Int eriors

- Choose a bold hue or wallpaper to use on an accent wall - or if bold tones and wallpapers are not in your comfort zone for your everyday spaces, a powder room is the perfect area to express yourself and even go a little over the top. - Give life to a vintage piece of furniture by way of reupholstering and/ or painting. Spraying frames and existing décor pieces to establish a new feature colour for your space is cost effective with large impact. - Bring the outside in! Fresh blooms and twigs in a dramatic, tall vase as a dining table center piece or even an herb garden on your wind sill. 52

Buying a home is an exciting adventure; the thrill of finding a home that you and your family can enjoy, where you will raise your children, make friends – all the good things that home ownership brings. But there are several things that you should consider before you write an offer. 1. Does this home make sense? Now, when I say that, I mean will this home make sense for you and your family in the long run? Are you a young family and hope to expand? Maybe a two bedroom townhome is not the right buy. Sure, with one child it may be very manageable, but if baby number two is just a year away – you may be forced to move within a couple of years. With closing costs, you could eat up any profits made, and that’s just not a smart buy. Ideally, you should look for a home that will accommodate you for at least five years. This may mean forgoing some fancy upgrades, but ultimately the cosmetics of a home can be changed, whereas adding square footage is a whole different ball game. 2. Have I fallen in love with the finishings, not the home? This often happens with buyers. The reason show homes are so inviting is that the developers want you to fall in love with an ideal. However, with all the fancy furniture gone, you may find the home you bought is not the home you need. You may have ignored all those stairs in that three level townhome because you loved that open concept living area. But if you noticed it when you visited, think about how it will affect your daily life. Do you have small children? Imagine carting baby buggies, strollers, and small children up and down those stairs. Suddenly, that home might not be such a great idea after all.

3. Do you see yourself in the neighbourhood? If there are tons of children in the neighbourhood, and you are a professional couple who crave quiet, then you might be in the wrong place. Conversely, if you have children, but there are no schools within walking distance, and no basketball hoops in the driveways, then they may not have any friends to play with. Make sure you pick an area that fits your lifestyle, whether you’re looking in the city or the suburbs. 4. Don’t buy the best home in a not-so-great neighbourhood. Ideally, you want to buy in the best area you can, even if that means buying a home that may not have all the extras that you want. Your home is your investment, and ultimately the old saying “Location Location Location” will always hold strong. You can’t make more land, no matter how hard you try. However, you can invest in the home that you purchase through renovation. It doesn’t have to be all at once. But if you buy a home with “good bones” – i.e., good sized rooms, a practical floor plan, and structurally sound – all within a desirable location – you will be making a sound purchase. 5. Can I really afford this? If you are a dual income couple and are planning on starting a family, you may have only one income for a while. Will the home put undo financial pressure on you? If your income was to go down, would you be able to afford the home? Just because you “can” afford to purchase a home, doesn’t mean you should. Sit down and think about your lifestyle. Do you like to travel extensively? If you do, make sure you budget that into the equation. Are you planning to send your children to private school? Factor in the annual tuition to your costs. Don’t forget to speak with your mortgage broker. Any changes in interest rates could change your mortgage payment in the years to come. Make sure you can handle any upticks in the interest rates. These are just a few things to consider when you enter the world of real estate. But, ultimately, common sense will rule the day. Always make sure that when you are shopping for your new home, you leave your rose coloured glasses at home! Cleaning... The BAD vs. The GOOD and kills roaches.

Vegetable oil-based liquid soap. This biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based detergents can be found in health food stores. Essential oils. The boiled-down essences of different plants, like peppermint, lavender, and lemons, for instance, can be used as natural air fresheners and to add pleasant scents to homemade cleaners.

The BAD Guys in Cleaning Products:

Try to avoid these substances whenever possible. Read your labels! Butyl cellosolve cresol Formaldehyde Glycols Hydrochloric acid Hydrofluoric acid naphthalene PDCBs (paradichloroben zenes) Perchloroethylene Phenol Propellants TCE (trichloroethylene) Petroleum distillates Phosphoric acid sulfuric acid

The GOOD Guys:

Baking soda. Effective mineral with mildly abrasive cleaning, whitening, and deodorizing properties. Vinegar. Derived from the fermentation of fruits or grains, vinegar has a high acid content that makes it great at killing germs, cutting grease, and dissolving mineral deposits. Borax. A naturally occurring mineral (containing water, oxygen, sodium, and boron) with tremendously useful antiseptic, antifungal, deodorizing, and disinfectant properties. It stops the growth of mold and mildew, www.thenewsyneighbour.com

“The Mortgage Mogul”

CMHC Premiums on the Rise

CMHC Premiums on the Rise

While interest rates continue to drop, it appears that the cost of getting mortgage insurance is about to go up. Following its annual review of its insurance products and capital requirements, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) announced February 28th that effective May 1, 2014, the cost of default insurance will be increasing. While CMHC doesn’t make changes to the premiums often, they do review the premiums annually and have made several adjustments with both increases and decreases since being commercialized in 1988.

For those who are not aware, anyone wishing to purchase a home in Canada with less than 20% of the purchase price to be used as the down payment, and who are working with a traditional bank or financing institution, are subject to a default insurance premium, which is added to the mortgage amount. Unfortunately, this insurance does not benefit you as the purchaser, but it helps protect the bank or lender that holds the mortgage in the event that you are not able to make your mortgage payments for whatever reason. So how does this affect applications for insurance moving forward? For any and all applications submitted and approved prior to May 1st, those files will be subject to the current insurance premiums, with no restrictions on when those mortgages are scheduled to fund. Any files that are submitted on or after May 1st, 2014 will be subject to the higher premiums. For any clients purchasing a home with the minimum 5% down payment, the insurance premium will be going from 2.75% of the mortgage amount to 3.15%. This premium is then added to the mortgage amount, unless you wish to pay the premium up front. Based on a $250,000 mortgage amount, this will result in less than a $5 per month increase to your mortgage payment. In Canada, we have three insurers that the banks and financial institutions work with when offering high ratio financing. These include CMHC, Genworth and Canada Guaranty. With the recent announcement made by CMHC, the other two insurance providers will be following suit with identical increases to their premiums, and these will be effective as well on May 1st of this year. As always, I welcome any questions or comments you may have regarding the information contained in my articles. Until next month…this has been a mortgage moment with The Mortgage Mogul. All The Left Over Wedding Stuff That Didn’t Fit Anywhere Else In This Issue... Let’s renew our vows so that I can start a “wedding ideas” board on Pinterest and not feel weird about it.
