After receiving The Newsy Neighbour Best in Business Award for Best Bakery in 2016, I spoke with The Newsy Neighbour staff to thank them for what they did for my small business – creating local awareness and increased traffic. It still sounds rehearsed, and I wish people could hear what I say about it – the emotion [ just] comes out. [It] was a heartfelt thank you because you had no idea what you did for me as a small business. It meant so much to me that so many people came in to check out My Bakery Shop and then vote for us! ~ My Bakery Shop, Langdon

Also, remind your child never to go with a stranger anywhere. Adults never need a child’s help – if a grownup needs your help, run the other way!

8) Provide your child with emergency identification.

Place your child's name, telephone number and address somewhere on their costume, clothing, or a piece of paper in their pocket in the event they get lost.

9) Approach lit houses only.

Houses that are ready to receive Halloween trick-or-treaters should have their porch light on and/or a pumpkin lit up by the door. Never approach a house without its lights on.

DID YOU KNOW?

Halloween is the 2nd largest holiday after Christmas in terms of dollars spent, accounting for over $5 billion in sales. Halloween also is recognized as the 3rd biggest party day after New Year's and Super Bowl Sunday.

Halloween Fun and Safety 1) Take a flashlight with fresh batteries.

A flashlight will help guide the way even if there are streetlights in your neighbourhood. Glow sticks are also popular and come in lots of different glowing colours. Or add reflective tape to your child's costume, shoes or flashlight.

2) Accept treats at the doorway only.

Children should never go inside a house when trick-or-treating

3) Do not to eat any of treats until each piece has been inspected.

Home-made items should be thrown out. Gum, peanuts or hard candy should not be given to children under five because they are a choking hazard.

4) Stay on sidewalks.

Walk on the sidewalks and stay out of the street whenever possible. If it is not possible, walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. Obey all traffic signals.

5) Walk, don't run.

Walking is safer; and by not running, children will be able to observe traffic more easily and each other.

6) Stay in groups and/or with parent.

Small children should remain with their parents, and older children should stay in their group in familiar neighbourhoods only.

7) Know how to dial 911.

Teaching your child the importance of all emergency numbers, including your cell and house number, is vital in any situation.

One quarter of the candy sold for the entire year is purchased around Halloween (between September and November 10) It was believed that ghosts came back to the earthly world and people thought that they would encounter ghosts if they left their homes. To avoid being recognized by these ghosts, people would wear masks when they left their homes after dark so that the ghosts would mistake them for fellow spirits.

Samhainophobia: Fear of Halloween According to the folk tale, after a trickster named Jack died, he was denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing longer, becoming Jack's Lantern.

Abandoned places that once bustled and thrived with people, ghost towns are remarkable because they provide a vision of what once existed. While there’s a historical background to any city, ghost towns possess especially interesting ones, since their histories are all that remains Kolmanskop, which means Coleman’s Hill in Afrikaans, is located in Namibia’s southern Namib Desert. It was settled by German miners after a diamond discovery in 1908. The inhabitants who took over built homes and local institutions heavily inspired by German architecture. After about 40 years, however, the town found itself on the decline when its diamond resources were exhausted, leading to its eventual abandonment. According to rumors, the buildings and homes that remain standing in Kolmanskop are now inhabited by ghosts, and indeed possess a certain haunted eeriness. The interiors of these structures show how the desert has slowly but surely devoured the town after only about a hundred years, which leads us to believe that the strange town, which is now a tourist attraction that requires a permit to enter, may not exist at all in another century.

Members of the jury, it is no secret that I’m treated horribly in my home. From a decreased number of treats, to fewer walks, to hugs from sticky tiny fingers… my life is the worst. No dog has a worse life than I do. But one of the worst things that happens to me is that Mom thinks it’s just hilarious to dress me up for Halloween. I don’t approve of this endeavour, nor do I appreciate it.

How about instead of throwing away your jack-o-lanterns when they start to rot, start a tradition of burying them instead! Make a ceremony, get everyone together and honour the pumpkins that gave their lives for your Halloween! Sit in a circle and start a scary ghost story. Each guest adds on to the story, after repeating previous story additions, until it reaches a scary ending! Make whoever messes up the story bob for apples. The new way of bobbing for apples is to hang them by their stems with string from the ceiling and let people try to bite them! It is actually harder than bobbing in water and it’s also much less messy. A good memory game is, “Scary Objects”. Place a bunch of Halloween related objects on a tray; let everyone look at them, then take the tray away. Have people write down what they remember and see who’s closest. Making your own fake blood is less expensive than buying ready-made! It’s easy and only takes a few items like Cornsyrup and food colouring. Remember, if you are using fake blood or making your own, it can be sticky and stains very badly! Make sure that whatever you put it on is expendable! Rubbing some petroleum jelly over skin before the blood is applied will help keep the staining down. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

What is Pre-Construction Real Estate Investing? The idea of pre-construction investments, when it comes to real estate, is actually quite a clever way to make money. The theory is quite simple. Invest in a property before, when it is in the planning stage. Those who will be building these buildings need money and investors in order to get the building off the ground. By investing (in many cases, basically purchasing options to purchase) in the units, typically condo units in high demand areas. Before the ground is broken, investors often have the option of investing for pennies on the expected dollar once the building is complete and can re-sell the property at full market value once the building is complete, pocketing the difference in the original investment and the asking price. This is a win-win situation for many builders or 'owners' of the property in questions because 'pre-selling' the units allows lending agents to have confidence in the viability of the project as a money earner by selling many of the units, sight unseen. The benefit to investors is that they are able to purchase at a much lower price pre-construction than afterwards and can sell at the full market value (or above, in some high-demand and under saturated areas for real estate).

This style of investing is not nearly as glamorous to some as flipping houses. There are no beast-to-beauty renovations. There are, however, some things that should be kept in mind while making this type of transaction. First of all, no real estate venture is ever guaranteed to turn a profit, no matter what the glossy little brochures tell you. With the current trends in property sales, this is typically not the best environment for pre-construction investing, though these things tend to change on a regular basis and that market could be looking up again in the very near future. Second, networking is more often than not the best way to break into this particular business. There are all kinds of fly-by-night would-be real estate investors. The ones that manage to last are those that network with other real estate agents, as well as those who have specific interests and expeThe Newsy Neighbour Magazine

rience with pre-construction investments. Join local groups, in addition to online groups that deal specifically with this sort of investment in order to get more information quickly. The costs involved might appear daunting at first, but they are far less than the costs of getting in over your head by not having a grasp of even the most basic 'ins' and 'outs' of pre-construction real estate investing. Third, develop a close-knit relationship with a realtor that specializes in this particular type of real estate investing. This could prove to be the most beneficial thing you will ever do in order to ensure future success. Be developing the right relationship with the right realtor, you can get information on new properties before they make it to the public sector. This puts you in the rare and wonderful position of beating the competition to the punch. This gives you a much better shot at receiving the rock bottom prices that are often missed by waiting too long to make the purchase. Fourth, be prepared to hold onto the property for a little while if you need to do so. The problem with pre-construction investing is that there are no guarantees that, when the time comes, you will be able to 'seal the deal'. Things come up, even when you have a buyer that is willing and eager to make the purchase. In other words, there are times when you will need to hold onto the property for a short while and sometimes as a long-term investment. Some options, in the case of long-term holds, would include renting the property out to vacationers if it is in a high-demand tourist area. You can use your realtor to help with that. This allows the property to be earning some income until the sale can be made. Others decide to hold onto the property as a personal vacation home for themselves, friends, and family. In the end, the important thing is that there is a "Plan B" for the property should the deal fall through and you are left paying the monthly note. Pre-construction real estate investing may not have the 'name in lights' appeal that other types of investing carry, but it does provide a viable investment style that has the potential to bring in significant profits. The name of the game when it comes to investing is profits, so keep this in mind when considering your investment options. This is one of the forms of investing that requires (in most cases) the least amount of capital up front.

This section is for YOU WHAT ABOUT THE COMMUNITY? Many new home buyers are looking for a community as well as a home—a friendly place to live, a good environment for raising a family or enjoying one’s retirement years. The word “community” may conjure up images of white picket fences, gingerbread porches, children’s tricycles and small town atmosphere. Or, you may have visions of an active adult lifestyle with nature trails, bike paths and sports facilities. It is important to have realistic expectations and to know what a particular community offers before you buy into it. As you visit builders’ sales offices and model homes, ask about the community at the same time. Today’s builders and developers strive to build enjoyable and healthy environments for all age groups. Common facilities like parks and community centers provide a central area where people can meet, socialize and get involved. Find out about cost for use, if any, and how the facilities and common areas will be maintained once the development is completed.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A NEW HOME BUILDER?

ATTENTION BUILDERS:

A builder is defined as a person who undertakes the performance of all the work and supply of all the material necessary to construct a completed home, whether for the purpose of sale by the person or under a contract with a vendor or owner. But it is so much more than that; a new home builder is fulfilling a purchaser’s lifelong dream – to own their own home. Whether it is their first or fourth home, purchasing a new home is the biggest purchase of a lifetime. There are many decisions to make before you purchase your new home, like design, changes, which lot to choose, and perhaps the biggest decision: where are you going to live?

thenewsyneighbour.com

We have had “New Home Builders” advertising in the magazine for years now and many of them have been with us from the beginning; this tells me a lot about these builders. First, they are very smart to advertise in “The Newsy” and secondly, this also shows me that these builders have been in business for many years, which also tells me they have strong reputations, integrity and build amazing homes. They have the vision to change and adapt with the ever-changing real estate market. I would never be afraid to recommend any of these builders to you and they all offer diverse and well planned communities, all in different areas, giving a wide range of options.

The Newsy Neighbour is fortunate enough to have so many construction and trades companies supporting our magazine, so we want to make sure that the home builders who are building magnificent homes in our communities are aware of them!!

the floors and cabinets or, at the very least, to the floors and cabinets you hope to have in your kitchen someday.

Home Decorating: Kitchen on a Budget Decorating a home can be a trying thing to do with the best of budgets. The fact that you do not happen to have large lots of money lying around, however, should not prevent you from having a lovely kitchen to call your own. The kitchen is, after all, the heart of any home and you want this room to be one that invites everyone to come, congregate, and pitch in (one can always dream, right?). This is the reason that you want your kitchen to shine above all other rooms in your home. The kitchen should radiate warmth to all who enter. Truthfully speaking, there are many things you can do in your kitchen that will greatly impact the overall look, without changing anything structurally within. If you have wallpaper, remove it and try paint. There are all kinds of great things you can do in the kitchen from plaster (which looks amazing in a kitchen), to faux finishes and textures, and glazes for added impact. The walls in the kitchen are your canvas and the world is at your disposal. Just remember to try to tie the walls into

Another great change that isn't terribly expensive is hardware. The simple act of changing the door handles and drawer pulls on your kitchen cabinet can result in an almost instant facelift. When these changes are combined with painted or stained cabinetry, the effects are nothing short of stunning in many cases. It's the little things that often have the greatest impact, so keep this in mind when planning your changes. The floors of your kitchen are another rather inexpensive change that can be made despite preconceptions. Keep in mind that you do not have to go top of the line in order to enjoy huge changes in the appearance of your floors. There are laminate floors that are rather inexpensive to install, as well as many forms of peel and stick tile that can bring about impressive results for very little effort and without professional skills. Any floors that you are capable of installing yourself will save a lot of money and can make a huge difference in the appearance and your enjoyment of your kitchen. Perhaps the biggest coup of all when it comes to changing the appearance of your kitchen is the ability to apply stainless steel PVC contact paper to your kitchen appliances in order to give them the instant appearance of stainless steel. This is a very inexpensive method for updating the overall appearance of your kitchen in a matter of minutes and at a cost less

In addition to painting the walls in your kitchen, you may also want to consider painting, staining, or antiquing your cabinets. I know that some jaws just dropped to the keyboard. How dare I suggest such a thing as painting wooden cabinets? The answer is simple, really. It is much cheaper than replacing them and much easier than staining them. Really, it boils down to a matter of choice. My first choice wouldn't be painting but then again, there are times when painting is a viable option. It will greatly change the overall appearance of the kitchen if nothing else.

than that of replacing one appliance. For your countertops, an inexpensive and not terribly disruptive alternative to replacing them altogether is to apply peel and stick tile over your existing countertops. As you can see, there are many ways in which you can improve and enhance the warmth and coziness that you want your kitchen to convey without shattering the piggy bank in the process. More importantly, you should keep in mind that taking on one project at a time allows you to make the adjustments in your own time and as finances allow.

When snow falls, it often collects on the trees around your home. If you have large trees around your home, these branches can be at risk for breaking with the heavy snow. To prevent this from happening, before the snow hits, cut back branches are at risk. When it does snow, brush the snow off the branches with a broom. It is better for the branches to brush the snow instead of shake it. It’s important to make sure your gutters are cleaned too. With our frequent temperature swings in the winter, full gutters can lead to ice dams, which can damage gutters and roofs. Put away the hose and turn off your external taps so they don’t freeze and crack. It is good to also swap out your summer tools for winter ones, like shovels and scrapers. Set out gravel or salt containers by each entrance to your home so you can easily sprinkle these when the ice starts to collect.

2. Get Your Fireplace Cleaned

Whether you have a wood burning or gas fireplace, it is important to have maintenance done on your chimney. Wood burning fireplaces should be cleaned every one to two years, as the creosote buildup can cause a fire. In gas stoves, it is important to see if there is any debris or even an old nest that has formed.

3. Don’t Forget About Heating Maintenance

It is important to make sure your heating system is in good working order before you head into the colder months. If you

haven’t had your heating system checked by a professional in the last three years, this is probably the year to do it. It is also very important to change your furnace filters every three months. Dirty filters mean your furnace needs to work twice as hard to get warm air around your home. New filters are usually inexpensive, and are easy to slide into place. This is also a good time to check the batteries for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Because windows are closed, and fireplaces and stoves are used more, it’s important to do monthly checks to make sure your detectors are up to the job. There should be at least a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor of your home.

4. Protect Entryway Flooring

No matter your homes flooring, moisture and dirt can do a lot of damage. It’s easy to track in moisture, so be sure to put out a mat both inside and outside your external doors. Having a scraper can also help get some of the excess snow off boots, and having a waterproof tray will keep any puddles from forming and damaging your floors.

5. Prepare an Emergency Supply Kit

Winter storms are real, and having an emergency kit handy can make a big difference. It’s important to have enough water, non-perishable food items, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, light blankets, warm clothes, and other items to get you through three days. It’s good to keep extra of other items like medicine, baby food or pet food, just in case.

6. Stop the Cold Air from Coming in

Check for drafts around the windows, doors, and vents of your home. Make sure windows are locked, and if you find a draft, sealing cracks with caulking is an inexpensive fix. You can also seal windows with plastic wrap to keep some of the cool air out. It’s also important to heat your home efficiently. Move large items of furniture that are over heat vents. Those pieces of furniture will suck up the heat. Additionally, if there are rooms in your home that aren’t used, shut the vent and close the door to the room. This can save you money on your heat bills too. Stepper Homes

Tree in the Road

A car was driving down the street when all of a sudden it started swerving. The car was going back and forth until someone called the police. When the police pulled the car over, a young lady rolled down the window and said, "Officer, I'm so glad you are here. I saw a tree in the road, and then I saw another. So I had to swerve to keep from hitting them!" The officer looks at her, and then says, "Ma'am, that's your air freshener."

Breakfast

Deciding to eat healthier breakfasts, my brother in law declared that oatmeal would now be his cereal of choice. But after eating his first bowl, he told my sister, “I hope I develop a taste for the stuff. It goes down real rough.” “Well,” she said, “how long did you cook it?” “You’re supposed to cook it?” he said.

Definition

No English dictionary has been able to explain the difference between the two words “complete” and “finished” in a way that is easy to understand. Some people say there is no difference between complete and finished, but there is: When you marry the right one, you are COMPLETE... And when you marry the wrong one, you are FINISHED... And when the right one catches you with the wrong one you are COMPLETELY FINISHED!

Senior Safety

I failed a Health and Safety course at the Senior Centre today. One of the questions was: “In the event of a fire, what steps would you take?” Apparently, “Great Big Ones” was the wrong answer.

Fire Safety

Quite possibly, one of the hardest things to ever imagine happening to you is a house fire. So hard to believe, in fact, that typically, more often than not, we ignore the thought and pretend it could never happen. Which means – we don’t PLAN. But, planning what you would DO in a fire is the KEY to surviving. Let’s review together: • Draw an escape floor plan of your home and include in all possible escape routes. This will show your family all possibilities at a glance… Post this floor plan in a highly visible place like the side of your fridge or a bathroom door. The theory is that you look at this

22 •

map more often than you even think that you do and it becomes second nature to visualize it. • Try to have 2 escape routes from each room. We actually have 4 exits from our master bedroom, but 2 are much easier to escape from than the others, so I always would try to use the easiest route first. • Do you live with people that might need assistance? Be sure to plan in advance. Who will help younger children, the elderly, or disabled people? This planning will save you live-saving time during an emergency. • Practice! Have a family meeting and talk about your new floor The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Please bring non perishable FOOD DONATIONS for the Wheatland County Food Bank plan, how it works and what it means to your family. And then practice escaping from your home. This can be done when everyone is aware that you’re practicing and then it’s also a great idea to surprise your family occasionally by announcing FIRE DRILL!!! when no one is expecting it. Fire experts everywhere say – practice, practice, practice. • Review your escape plan on a regular basis. Have any of the escape routes been altered? Is there something in the way of that window now that wasn’t there last year? Is it still easy to get out quickly? If you are practicing your fire drill consistently, you’ll figure out if your escape plan still works well. • Experts recommend that IF you do have to activate your emergency fire drill, that you call 911 AFTER you are out of the house. Never call from your house phone… Get everyone out of your house first. • Have a meeting place outside your home. For our family, it was the tree in the park across from the front of our yard. • Tools. Do you have dedicated smoke alarms? Do you have carbon monoxide detectors? Are they placed in the proper places in your home? Be sure to read the manufacturers recommendations on where they should be placed. Firefighters also recommend that you have a plan to replace your batteries for your smoke alarms annually. Your birthday be a good day to remember to replace those batteries. And If your smoke detectors are hardwired, test them monthly.

There are certainly several important points about this topic and I’ve only just touched on the details, giving you simple ideas. For more information, please check websites for your local fire departments, call them, or maybe even go visit them. Take your family for a tour of your local firehouse. They would be very happy to have the company and help you to talk and plan.

HOW TO REMOVE NEGATIVE ENERGY FROM YOUR HOME WITH SIMPLE CLEANSING TECHNIQUES

403-901-2727

www.richleecustomhomes.com

Negative or harmful energy seeps into our spaces all the time. There is nothing to be afraid of! Whatever the reason for it entering (it is just energy or vibration), regularly removing negative energy from your space can restore balance and harmony.

Burn Sage, Frankincense and Copal

Cell:

Sage cleansing is one of the oldest and fastest ways to remove negative energy from your home. Open your front door and the windows in the house. Starting from the back of the space, light the sage and walk around the room covering as much of it as you can. Using a feather or feather fan, waft the sage smoke into the corners of the room up to the ceiling. Make sure to go into every room, including the closets, as you move from the back of the house to the front. When you’ve reached the front, walk out the door and sage around the door and frame. Then, leave the sage outside to allow it to burn off. Make sure to do your garage, if

If you are wondering how to remove these negative energies from your home, try some of these simple cleansing techniques to ensure there is a free flow of positive energy throughout your home. Each of these mini procedures can be done individually, but are most powerful if used together with the intent to cleanse and protect. Repeat these cleansing procedures if someone is sick, if a lot of people have entered your home, if you moved into a new home, or if you just feel negative emotions or occurrences keep arising. I have used almost all of these techniques and my favourite is Smudging with white sage and Sea Salt in the corners of the house.

you have one, from the back to the front. Afterwards, light frankincense resin or copal incense cones and walk through the home again, along with your garage. With so much negative energy in today’s world, this wards off that energy on a deeper level.

Salt the Corners of Each Room

Pour sea salt or Himalayan salt into the four corners of your rooms and let the salt sit for 48 hours. This will absorb the negative energy of previous owners if you are just moving in, or the negative energy of people who are sick or fighting. After 48 hours, either vacuum or sweep the salt and throw it away. For extra protection, grind up saffron and mix it in with the salt. In Tibetan tradition, evil energies do not like the smell of saffron, so they won’t enter a space if saffron has been used.

Protect Your Entrances

Your entrances and windows act as entrances for energy to enter your home from the exterior. Keeping these areas purified is essential for maintaining a healthy energetic environment. Fill up a bucket of water, and add the juice of five lemons, a cup of sea salt and ¼ cup of ammonia or white vinegar. Clean all of your doors, doorknobs and windows in your space--don’t forget to wear gloves. This is especially powerful when people have entered your home or when there seems to be a lot of chaos in the world outside your home. Afterward, pour sea salt by all your entrances to your home under a doormat to prevent the energy from entering.

Grid with Protection Crystals

Black tourmaline absorbs negative energy from both people and things. The best way to use black tourmaline is to place a piece in each corner of a room. Doing so builds a protective shield to prevent negative energy from entering your space. It also ab-

sorbs electromagnetic energy, so keeping it near your Internet router, television, computer, and other devices protects you from their harmful energy. Black tourmaline eases anxiety and depression, so holding it in your hands can pull the negative energy from your own body out. If there is a particular part of your home or space that feels heavy despite trying these methods of cleansing, placing a black tourmaline log in that area will absorb the negative energies into its black void. Cleanse these protection crystals once a week to ensure they stay powerful by placing them in a bowl of filtered water and putting them in the sun for at least 4 hours. You can also immerse them in the smoke of burning sage.

Add Sound to Your Space

If you think about a haunted house, an image of a deserted house might come to mind. This quiet space attracts negative energy and other spirits, which is why sound is a powerful cleansing method for the home. Walk through your home with ringing a bell, chime or singing bowl to prevent negativity from dwelling in your space. I hope you can try one or all of these techniques to clear and balance your home or just a room if you need to. You can also use the sea salt method and/or the black tourmaline crystals in your vehicle if you feel road rage or unsetting feelings while you are driving to work or on a trip. Helping to change energies in your space can help in the healing, restoring and rebuilding in your whole body systems! Try clearing your space today! Curb Appeal Matters When Selling Real Estate

One of the first things that people will notice is crumbling paint, or bland and faded colours on the exterior. Vinyl siding is often inviting because it is easily cleaned and reinvigorated. It also happens to be fairly low maintenance, which often appeals to buyers and renters alike. There are those, however, who will argue that siding detracts from the potential personality of a home. Regardless, a clean and crisp paint job or siding makes a much better impression than an apparent state of disrepair.

First impressions matter most. This is one concept that many homeowners trying to sell their homes and first-time property investors trying to sell or rent property fail to understand. Curb appeal is the first impression when it comes to a house. This is the place that you as an investor or seller want those driving by to think of as home. For this reason, you should pay careful attention and spend some degree of time and effort making the outside of the home inviting and appealing to potential buyers or renters.

BUSINESS

Winner 2016-2017

“A small real estate broker was dismayed when a brand new real estate franchise much like his own opened up next door and erected a huge sign which read BEST AGENTS. He was horrified when another competitor opened up on his right, and announced its arrival with an even larger sign, reading LOWEST COMMISSIONS. The small real estate broker panicked, until he got an idea. He put the biggest sign of all over his own brokerage-it read…MAIN ENTRANCE.”

Remember, those first impressions are important. If the outside of the home is rather unimpressive, potential buyers are quite likely to discover the diamond that is the inside of your home. Another thing you can do to add curb appeal is to plant low maintenance flowers and plants around the exterior of your home. You do not want to invest in plants that require constant care, nor do you want to seriously invest in plants that are going to grow out of control and look unwieldy. At least you do not want to plant these around the exterior of your home that is facing the road. Bushes and climbing vines do well in many cases along fences that surround the property or as a dividing privacy line between your property and neighbouring properties. If you live in an area that isn't conducive to green grass, you may want to consider some sort of hybrid that can thrive with less water or choose some form of landscaping that doesn't rely on large open patches of grass in order to be beautiful, such as xeriscaping. The point is to make the house as attractive on the outside as you hope those viewing the property will find the inside. Another thing to keep in mind when making the upgrades is to clean the sidewalks and driveway if it is concrete. It is amazing what a high power pressure washer can do to your sidewalks, driveway, and/or front porch. Don't stop there, however; take the time to make sure your doors and windows are clean as well. These little things often make the biggest impression. If you care properly for the exterior of your home and keep it nice and shiny, chances are (in the buyer's mind) that you will have taken the same care of the inside of the home that they are quite possibly now considering. Taking the extra time to ensure that the outside of your home is attractive so buyers can translate into higher and quicker offers than neglecting the essential real estate between the front door and the curb. Do not overlook this powerful piece of advice and you should enjoy a little more success in your efforts to sell your home or investment property. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Fall for Home Decorating Autumn is the time of year you can literally smell the changes. Leaves are burning, peanuts are roasting, and most people are just beginning to feel a hint of a chill in the air. More than smelling the changes that are coming, you can see them. Leaves begin to take on brilliant hues and the colours are spectacular to watch and witness. This is the time of year that thoughts begin to turn to football, hiking, and the upcoming holidays (for there are quite a few on the horizon).

Fall contains two primary holidays for many people. Those include Halloween and Thanksgiving. Keep these holidays in mind when planning your primary fall home decorating scheme and make small adjustments in order to accommodate the holidays. Personally, I love the colours associated with autumn. The yellows, shades of gold, orange, and brown are favourites for my decorating taste. I always regret a little that this time of year is often overshadowed by Christmas as it approaches and the expectations of others that I decorate for Christmas almost immediately after celebrating Thanksgiving. For those who lack inspiration when it comes to home decorating for fall, keep the colours mentioned above in mind. One great theme to incorporate into the decorating process would be the theme of leaves. Leaves falling from the trees are one of the most common associations with this time of year and it is a great look to incorporate into your home. You can even find leaf garlands in

fall shades if you are inclined to look for them. Leaves can also be incorporated into lovely centerpieces and floral arrangements to hallmark the season. Harvest is another common association with autumn. This is also rather easy to incorporate into most home decorating designs. Gourds make an excellent accent piece for this time of year and you can find real ones in almost any vegetable market along with many realistic imitation gourds. These can be used, much like or along with leaves, as part of centerpieces, in floral arrangements, in tabletop decorations, and even to hold place cards for large gatherings. They are incredibly versatile as well as colourful and make a great addition to any autumn home decorating venture. Pumpkins are essentially gourds but they have a special place all their own in the fall home decorating scheme. Pumpkins have a special association with both Halloween and Thanksgiving (pumpkin pie, anyone?) and should not be overlooked as an important tool for decoration. In addition, they are just bright, colourful, and cheerful to have around the house. To avoid the stench of rotting pumpkins, simply avoid carving them if you intend to keep them around for a little while. Those that are carved should be placed outside and only carved within days of the 'big day'. A great centerpiece idea in general for fall would include a large bowl, in outstanding fall colours such as a burnt orange or a shade of gold. For the first part of autumn, you can fill the centerpiece with candies that are wrapped in fall colours. This is ideal for family munchies as well as trick or treaters that may find their way to your door on Halloween. Once this holiday has ended you can fill the bowl with colourful leaves and gourds to complete the look. This should carry you through Thanksgiving when it is time to begin thinking about Christmas decorations and wintertime rather than fall. Whether you adore fall like I do or dread its appearance each year for whatever reason, there is little denying that fall is ripe with decorating ideas and ideals. Take the time to look around your local craft stores and see where inspiration strikes. It is never too early or too late in the year to begin thinking about what you are going to do for your home decorating plan in the seasons to come.

Playing Sudoku helps people feel Open Everyday & Quick Turnaround a sense of mastery – this is one Phone: 403-934-1807 316A 2nd Ave, Strathmore, AB reason why the game is so popular. Sudoku The Rules of Sudoku might help your brain stay The classic Sudoku game involves a grid of 81 squares. The grid is healthy. divided into nine blocks, each containing nine squares. The rules of the game are simple: each of the nine blocks has to contain all the numbers 1-9 within its squares. Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box. The difficulty lies in that each vertical nine-square column, or horizontal nine-square line across, within the larger square, must also contain the numbers 1-9, without repetition or omission. Every puzzle has just one correct solution. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

Jock The 2016 – 2017 NHL season had a little bit of everything for the Calgary Flames. “Always give 100%, and you’ll never have to second-guess yourself” – Dan Valenti

A terrible start, a great recovery and a disappointing 4 game sweep in the first round of the playoffs.

So, what can we expect this season? It’s year two for head coach Glen Gulutzan. Johnny Gaudreau is happy because the league is cracking down on hand slashing. The Flames have one of the best defensive corps in the league and the goaltending can’t get any worse. Can it? The bar is set much higher for the Flames this season. Although, I don’t believe this is a Stanley Cup contender just yet, they are good enough to make the playoffs and maybe (just maybe) give the Oilers a little bit of a scare in the first or second round. I might be a dreamer, but I do believe we will see a post-season “Battle of Alberta” in 2018. This won’t happen if the Flames don’t succeed in the following areas.

1. Have a strong start Entering a November 15th road game last year in Minnesota, the Flames had lost 4 in row. It was their 4th multi game losing streak of the young season. 16 games in the Flames were 6 games below 500, 5 points out of a playoff sport and no team in the league was on pace for a worse season. It was a remarkable turnaround for the team as a dreadful power play finally got on track and Chad Johnson provided some much need quality goaltending.

2. Goaltending This time last year, Flames fans were patting general manager Brad Treliving on the back. With Brian Elliot and Chad Johnson between the pipes, the Flames had finally solved their goaltending issues. Right now, the jury is out if Treliving is a good judge of goalies as veteran Mike Smith and Eddie Lack is not really an upgrade.

The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

The Flames don’t need outstanding goaltending, they just need consistent puck stopping. Eliminate the bad goals and make the saves you are paid to make. I’ll be honest. This one scares me.

3. Who’s going to play with Mony and Johnny? This is one area the Flames really didn’t address in the off season. No disrespect to Mikael Backlund but his line can’t be the best line this season. Sean Monohan is the number one center on this team and Gaudreau is the most skilled offensive player. Personally, I am not convinced that Micheal Ferland should be on the right side. Troy Brouwer is not the answer. Give Sam Bennett the opportunity.

“Whatever you do on a continuous basis creates a pattern and it becomes who you are. If you make a conscious decision to try to do the right things in all situations, then that’s just who you are, and you become a high character guy” – Tony Richardson “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford

4. Win in Anaheim Flames fans know it’s not the happiest place on earth. The Flames get a chance early in the season to stop a 25-game regular season losing streak in Disneyland. Win on October 9th and the Flames will be off the races.

5. Beat the Oilers The battle of Alberta wasn’t a lot of fun for Flames fans last season. 4 games and 4 losses. “It’s embarrassing,” admitted Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan after the Flames fell 7 – 3 in the final meeting of the season. All told, the Oil outscored the Flames 22 – 11 in the four meetings and if the Flames don’t want to play second fiddle in the province, they might like to open the season with a win in Edmonton on October 4th.

Advantages Of

Diesel Engines

If you've owned a diesel powered vehicle in the past or if you own one now, you no doubt appreciate the qualities this engine provides you with. More torque, better fuel economy, and easier maintenance are but a few of the attributes of owning diesel powered vehicles.

WORD SEARCH PUZZLE

However, there are some motorists that still complain about the engine's weak power, especially when accelerating from a full stop. What you may not be aware of is the fact that a diesel engine can be tweaked to give more power without harming the fuel economy. Diesel engines use air compression to create combustion versus the fuel/air mixture that is required by gas engines. This attribute means that diesel engines don't require spark plugs and therefore don't need to be tuned up. Diesel fuel has a much high fuel density than gas, which results in fuel economy increases of 20 - 30% over gasoline powered vehicles. Diesel engines are also cheaper to maintain as they have less parts than that of a gasoline powered engine. The life span of a diesel engine is also much longer. If you're looking for torque, for pulling a boat or other equipment, then the diesel engine has the supreme advantage. Diesel engines are surely slower, especially when starting from a dead stop, although when you climb hills or go over bridges, the diesel engine is surely up to the task. With trucks, diesel is normally the leader over gas engines in terms of performance and miles per gallon. Diesel trucks will get more miles than gas trucks, and the price for diesel is a bit cheaper than gas these days. And with gas prices on the rise, diesel will continue to dominate for a long time to come.

MY SECRETARY Two weeks ago was my 44th birthday and I wasn't feeling too hot that morning. I went downstairs for breakfast, knowing my wife would be pleasant, wish me a happy birthday, and probably have a present for me. She didn't even say, "Good morning", let alone any "Happy Birthday!" I thought, "Well, that's wives for you. The children will remember." The children came down for breakfast but they didn't say a word. When I started to the office I was feeling pretty low and despondent. As I walked into my office, my secretary, Janet said, "Good morning, boss. Happy Birthday!" I felt a little better. Someone had remembered. I worked until noon, and then Janet knocked on my door and said, "You know it is such a beautiful day outside and it is your birthday. Let's go to lunch, just you and me." I answered, "My goodness, that's the greatest thing I've heard all day. Let's go!” We went to lunch. We didn't go where we normally go. We went out into the country to a little private place. We had two martinis and enjoyed lunch tremendously. On the way back to the office, she said, "You know, it is such a beautiful day; we don't need to go back to the office, do we?" I answered, "No, I guess not." She said, "Let's go to my apartment." After arriving at her apartment she said, "Boss, if you don't mind, I think I'll go into the bedroom and slip into something more comfortable.” "Sure," I excitedly replied. She went into the bedroom and, in about six minutes she came out carrying a big birthday cake, followed by my wife, children and dozens

of our friends. They were all singing Happy Birthday! …and there I sat on the couch........naked.

INSPIRATION What is Inspiration? We all want to be inspired, but what is inspiration exactly? What does inspiration mean? Inspiration means literally, to breathe in and be filled with the spirit of the gods. The gods were the muses of ancient Greece. Greek myth explained that all creativity came from the gods and that mortals (that's us) can only receive somewhat imperfect copies of the originals. The modern meaning of inspiration is a motivating action or influence that results in creative works and productivity of all kinds. Inspiration is the source of all creativity and innovation. Fascination, quite simply, is nature's way of getting our attention. Don't dismiss it as trivial. Give it room. Give it time to breathe. Honour it. Follow your curiosity down the path that’s into the subject or thing that most fascinates you. Your deepest interests and even obsessions provide a clue that something significant is knocking on door of your unconscious mind. What is that new idea you cannot get out of your head? Is there some new road or fresh possibility has captured your attention?

In what ways can you cultivate and enrich this inspiration today?

What inspires you? Inspiration is everywhere — from the words of your favourite writer to the blooms and leaves on your morning walk. You just need to open your eyes, and breathe it in. What inspires me is my children, all six of them. They are all so different and unique and they all have their own way of looking at life, often different than mine. Driving through the mountains in the fall, spending time in my garden, walking my dogs, taking pictures, walking in the forest, especially the giant cedars just outside of Revelstoke, talking to old friends, my Christmas tree, decorating my home, writing a good article, hugging my first grandchild, feeling happy with an accomplishments, yoga, watching one of my old favourite movies and realizing I am far from perfect. What inspires YOU? Take the time to think about this and you may be inspired to become a better person, change what you are doing in life, change your thinking, look on the upside, try to be happier, be more giving and loving and enjoy every moment in life. You Really Are What You Eat

Recent dietary research has uncovered 14 different nutrient-dense foods that promote good overall health. Coined “superfoods,” they tend to have fewer calories, higher levels of vitamins and minerals, and many disease-fighting antioxidants. Beans (legumes), berries (especially blueberries), broccoli, green tea, nuts (especially walnuts), oranges, pumpkin, salmon. soy, spinach, tomatoes, turkey, whole grains and oats, and yogurt can all help stop and even reverse diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and some forms of cancer. And where one might have an effect on a certain part of the body, it can also affect the health of other body functions and performance, since the whole body is connected. With these 14 foods as the base of a balanced, solid diet, weight loss gimmicks and other fly-by-night programs can become a thing of the past in your life. Conversely, the ill-effects of an unbalanced diet are several and varied. Low energy levels, mood swings, being tired all the time, weight change, and feeling uncomfortable are just a few signs that your diet is unbalanced. An unbalanced diet can cause problems with maintenance of body tissues, growth and development, brain and nervous system function, as well as problems with bone and muscle systems.

12 Foods to Eat for Energy Beans Honey Spinach Apples Yogurt Eggs Salmon Almonds Oranges Sweet Potatoes Bananas Oats

Symptoms of malnutrition include lack of energy, irritability, a weakened immune system leading to frequent colds or allergies, and mineral depletion that can trigger a variety of health concerns, including anemia. And since the body is connected, realizing that an unhealthy body will result in an unhealthy spirit only makes sense. When we nourish our body with these superfoods and complement them with other nutrient-dense and healthy fresh foods, our spirit will be vitalized and healthy as a direct result. Many modern diets based on prepackaged convenience foods are sorely lacking in many vitamins and minerals, which can affect our mental capacities as well, and cause irritability, confusion, and the feeling of ‘being in a fog’ all the time. Superfoods can be the basis of a sound, healthy, nutritious solution to curing many of these ailments and more. facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

The Power of Gratitude

“Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend.” ~ Melody Beattie What makes a house a home? It’s not the walls, windows or even the décor. It’s how we feel when we are there. Feelings of safety, comfort, love, familiarity, belonging, rejuvenation or perhaps inspiration. There is a quote that says, “It takes hands to build a house, but only hearts can build a home,” (anonymous author). I realized how true this was when my home experienced an extensive fire just after midnight on September 4. The next day, as I walked among the burned timbers and piles of soaked insulation, saw wrinkled pictures hanging crooked, looked out cracked and broken windows, and smelled the distinct after-fire smell of stale smoke and burned wood, I knew my home had temporarily become a house. The evening of the fire, I stood on the street in my pajamas watching bright orange and yellow flames make their way along the roof of my home. I felt shock, disbelief and then a complete sense of surrender knowing there was nothing I could do but trust the firemen to do their best to save my home and I chose to give thanks for the blessings we had already experienced. It was a very long list. A sense of peace came over me as I voiced the things I was thankful for. Although there have been moments of sadness and overwhelm, I mostly have felt gratitude every day for the many blessings that continue to appear.

My daughter and I spent several days in the house assisting the clean-up crews with packing up our salvageable items and throwing away things that no longer had importance. It was an incredible healing process for me and I was grateful. Two days after the fire, a close friend passed away suddenly and in the midst of my tears, I was grateful that our paths had crossed. A few days later, my car was written off due to water damage from the fire, and again I felt gratitude that an accident was not the cause.

This issue also recognizes our local businesses who provide us with products and services, create employment and contribute back into the community. Be grateful for their service to us and consider how you can support them. Listen to the stories of the people around you and be grateful for what you may learn. At a recent Women Talk in Strathmore, we heard how to use the power of a talisman to fuel our inner strength and how emotions are neither good nor bad, they are simply indicators of what is going on in our lives and their purpose is to help us grow. A young woman shared stories of misfortune and tragedies, and she encouraged us all to ‘always keep fighting knowing that we are not alone’. Another woman encouraged us to know that no matter how others treat us or what they say, we must believe in ourselves and know that we are enough. Feel grateful for the wisdom of experience that others share. At Women Talk, we are grateful for the courageous women who

What I love is a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. I'll just have peanut butter and bananas, then peanut butter and pickles. Peanut butter and chocolate I don't recommend. ~ Dianne Wiest

Pickled My garden exploded this year and in my excitement, I have been dreaming of all the creative ways I can prepare my beautiful vegetables to preserve them to enjoy all winter long. I’m really on the bandwagon and motivated about this idea!

38 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

Don’t let pickling frighten you; people have been doing it for hundreds of years. I will never forget sneaking into my grandmother’s cold room in the basement of the old farm house to gaze upon all those incredibly beautiful jars filled with mouth watering pickled beets, cucumbers, carrots, beans, and peppers. I can still see the dirt floor and the potatoes and other assorted vegetables stored safely in their bins. The thing is, you don’t have to pickle just vegetables (if you’re not a pickle fan)—I know, hard to believe that there are people out there who do not like them—but you can pickle fruit too! Just think about sweet savory fruit chutney, absolutely fabulous with a slab of pork, leg of lamb or chicken. And think about the last time you had a Pickled Crab Apple – seriously, way too long to remember (now I’m dating myself) and I know my children are now thinking – way too much pickling mom – hick-up – Ha-Ha. Well, to let you know I am not just dreaming this stuff up, I have included some of those long-lost pickling recipes. Make a family day out of it – make the kids do all the peeling, stuffing etc. and you can sit back and supervise (like that would happen) and teach them something they were to afraid to tackle or not motivated to try on their own – it is a lot of work but also very rewarding and fun then the troops are all helping.

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER: A Pair of Diabetic Feet Written by: Vicki L Myhre CPOD (I) CMP PFRP. Jenericay Wellness and Footcare. Interna-

tionally Certified Podologist. Registered through the Canadian Examining. Board of Health Practitioners

HEY-HO! Larry Here. Happy fall, and what a beautiful one it is this year. Roger and I are clicking our heels together. We are loving the colours, the sunshine, the crisp cool air. This is truly Rogers’ favourite time of year. I think I have to agree with him; it is pretty amazing. We are out putting in our steps (remember, 10 thousand per day is what we all need to strive for) and watching everyone put those final touches of love into their yards and exteriors as they prepare to hunker down for the cold blast that will be coming far too soon. We have been very busy, as I am sure you all have been also. We took a delightful trip across Canada through the first half of September. Planes, trains and automobiles. We did it as good diabetics. We remembered our compression stockings for the flights. We packed our most comfortable shoes, with great support for the walking days. We made sure we had great wellness socks to put in those great shoes. We worked hard to eat properly, medicate, test our blood sugars, and get lots of sleep. And we come home with many priceless memories. Traveling can be pretty safe for a person that is practicing to be a GOOD DIABETIC. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to compile a list of indoor walking venues in this area, as promised, but will do our best to get them to you next month. So, stay posted for those and keep getting your steps in outside in the fresh air while it is still safe to do so. Roger and I have been reading Dr. Mark Hinkes book, HEALTHY FEET FOR PEOPLE WITH DIABETES. What an amazing book it is; we highly recommend it to anyone that wants to know as much as you can about living with Diabetic Feet. We feel that it is time to put out some reminders about feet and diabetes, so here is some factual information taken directly from Dr. Hinkes’ book.

40 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

“Did you know that amputation of the legs is one of the most common complications of diabetes? Yet it is still one that is commonly ignored by health care providers. In most cases, diabetics are counselled on the potential dangers of renal failure, premature heart disease and retinopathy, among others, but rarely are footcare and foot complications included as part of this education.” Roger and I understand how this could happen. It is really hard to cover everything that should be highlighted in the short amount of time available. It takes time to check off everything that is on the lengthy list that gets handed to us with our diagnosis of diabetes. Unfortunately, the time that it takes can be very costly to a diabetic person. A leg or two, perhaps a life… education is key." “The statistics are staggering,” writes Dr. Hinkes. According to the statistics on the Canadian Diabetes Association website, as of 2015 Diabetes affected 3.4 million Canadians and an additional 5.7 million had a condition called Pre-Diabetes. We assume the numbers would be much higher now. “Up to 25% if those with diabetes will get a foot ulcer. A foot ulcer is the most common reason for a diabetic admission to the hospital and the most common factor leading to an amputation. Every 30 seconds somewhere in the world a leg is lost as a consequence of diabetes.” Dr. Hinkes goes on to explain that, “Foot problems are better controlled when your blood sugar is controlled. Chronically elevated blood sugars can cause damage to your nerves and blood vessels. The smallest arteries, called arterioles, that circulate blood to your extremities and organs, can become narrowed or blocked. When this happens, the nerves that the artery serves are deprived of fresh oxygenated blood and nutrients needed to function in normally. Over time, the nerves will fail. The results of nerve failure include loss of vision, loss of kidney function, and loss of protective sensation for pain in the foot, also known as ‘diabetic sensory neuropathy.’ This condition leaves your foot vulnerable to painless and silent trauma that can lead to foot ulcers, infections, hospitalizations and amputations. “So do a good job of controlling your blood sugars and you will be less likely to develop foot problems!” Also, remember that your doctor is a great resource and you cannot move forward without them. But, please, also remember they are not your only resource. They strongly support the other resources available to you. Some of these include the Canadian Diabetes Association and your local clinic. Town Hall Meeting The town fathers were looking for a way to increase attendance and participation at their regular meetings. One member suggested bringing in a hypnotist. The officials agreed, and a famous hypnotist was hired, publicity distributed, and everyone was pleased. A few weeks later, the meeting hall was packed, and the townspeople sat fascinated as the hypnotist withdrew a pocket watch. The hypnotist began chanting, "Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch..." The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch, until suddenly the hypnotist's fingers slipped and the watch fell to the floor. "Crap!" said the hypnotist. It took three weeks to clean up the town hall.

I AM A

Oh, yes I am. I cannot even think about a day in the last year (or two) when I have not enjoyed a nice glass of fabulous wine either while I am making dinner or with my dinner. Did you know there are many really, really good reasons why you too, should have a glass of wine every single day?

Wine

-OOOOOO

The list of wines benefits is long and getting more surprising all the time. Already wellknown as heart healthy, wine in moderation might help you lose weight, reduce forgetfulness, boost your immunity, and help prevent bone loss. Women buy more than 6 out of every 10 bottles sold in this country. See, I always knew there was a reason I had a glass of wine every day – it’s good for me!!

Types of red wine grapes

Shiraz: Aromas and flavours of wild black-fruit (such as blackcurrant), with overtones of black pepper spice and roasting meat. The abundance of fruit sensations is often complemented by warm alcohol and gripping tannins. The Shiraz variety gives hearty, spicy reds. While Shiraz is used to produce many average wines, it can produce some of the world’s finest, deepest, and darkest reds with intense flavours and excellent longevity. Merlot: The black-cherry and herbal flavours are typical. The texture is round but a middle palate gap is common. Cabernet sauvignon: Is full-bodied, but firm and gripping when young. With age, rich currant qualities deepen. Bell pepper notes remain. Pinot noir: Very unlike Cabernet Sauvignon. The structure is delicate and fresh. The tan-

nins are very soft; this is related to the low level of polyphenols. The aromatics are very fruity (cherry, strawberry, plum), often with notes of tea-leaf, damp earth, or worn leather. Malbec: Malbec’s characteristics vary greatly depending on where it is grown and how it is transformed. Generally, it produces an easy-drinking style, well coloured wine that tastes of plums, berries, and spice. It is often blended with other varieties such as cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot to make Bordeaux style wines.

Types of white wine grapes

Riesling: Riesling wines are much lighter than Chardonnay wines. The aromas generally include fresh apples. The Riesling variety expresses itself very differently depending on the district and the winemaking. Rieslings should taste fresh. Gewürztraminer: The typical taste is a fruity flavour with aromas of rose petal, peach, lychee, and allspice. A Gewürztraminer often appears not as refreshing as other kinds of dry whites. Chardonnay: Often wider-bodied (and more velvety) than other types of dry whites, with rich citrus (lemon, grapefruit) flavours. Fermenting in new oak barrels adds a buttery tone (vanilla, toast, coconut, toffee). A Californian Chardonnay should give citrus fruit flavours, hints of melon, vanilla, some toasty character and some creaminess. Sauvignon Blanc: Is generally lighter than Chardonnay — Sauvignon Blanc normally shows an herbal character suggesting bell pepper or freshly mown grass. The dominating flavours range from sour green fruits of apple, pear and gooseberry through to tropical fruits of melon, mango and blackcurrant. Quality unoaked Sauvignon Blancs will display smokey qualities; they require bright aromas and a strong acid finish; they are best grown in cool climates. Moscato: Is often sweet and always fruity, with a characteristic grape fruity and musky aroma. Moscato wines are easily recognizable to anyone who has tasted a Muscat table grape. (Ask Denise about Moscato – she claims to drink enough Moscato to keep a single liquor store in business!) Pinot grigio: A crisp, dry wine with good acid “bite” is typically made in Italy and Germany. Oregon or Alsace Pinot Gris shows aromatic, fruity flavours. Pairing with food is more difficult because Alsatian winemakers leave the grapes on the vine much longer. The perfume in Alsatian Pinot Gris makes it especially well-suited for Thai or spicy Chinese cuisine.

4 Tips: How to Eat Healthy While on A Budget Have you found yourself thinking, “I can’t afford to eat healthy”? With food prices constantly rising, it’s no wonder why people turn to fast food or junk food. But eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive. Here are my top 4 tips on how to eat healthy while on a budget. 4. Meatless Mondays

Meat can add a lot of money to your budget if you’re not careful. Try reducing your meat consumption 1-2 days a week and opt for a more budget-friendly protein such as whey protein powder, canned fish, beans, eggs, cottage cheese, and quinoa!

3. Shop the outside

Grocery stores are strategic in where they place their products. If you walk the outside of the store, you will notice the 4 groups; dairy, meat, fruits & vegetables, and grains. Begin by shopping the outside of the store first to make sure you are filling your cart with healthy, nutrient-dense foods.

2. Know your prices

If you really want to make your budget stretch a bit further, it’s always a great idea to know prices at different stores. Check out flyers for sales but also keep an eye out for regular everyday prices. By knowing your prices, you will be able to calculate an accurate budget for your grocery list. Every dollar counts!

1. Meal Planning and a list

By far the most important tip I can offer you! Pick a day of the week and determine each of your meals; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. (Choose meals with ingredients you already have in your cupboard). Once you have your meal plan complete, write down your grocery list with prices. Having a grocery list helps in two ways; you will be less inclined to buy items that are not on your list and it will help you stick to your budget. BONUS: Never go grocery shopping while hungry!

While I do not have the honour of repreThe correlation between straight teeth and a healthy heart might not seem obvious, as making the connection between the health of the mouth and the health of the body can still seem to be a stretch. The mouth is actually referred to as the ‘gateway’ to the body and has been relied on for hundreds of years to reveal subtle signs of overall physical wellness. Even in modern-times the mouth still acts as a compass for physical wellbeing; influencing existing conditions and sometimes increasing the risk for developing others. So, what’s this all got to do with straightening teeth?

The Benefits of Straight Teeth

Apart from the obvious esthetic reward of having straight teeth, there are many other boosts to your dental health that aren’t always talked about.

Better Gum Health

It can be pretty tricky trying to negotiate around crooked teeth with a toothbrush and floss. Consequently, the health of gum tissue can suffer due to increased inflammation caused by plaque and food being trapped between teeth. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean and reduced gum inflammation actually makes your heart healthier.

Reduced Risk of Dental Decay

Just like a buildup of plaque irritates gum tissue, it also increases the risk of decay. Oral bacteria found naturally in plaque feed-off simple carbohydrate remnants in the mouth – and in the process release acids that weaken tooth enamel and causing decay.

Did you know that Indus School is the “School of Choice” for kids in Langdon and SE Rocky View County with physical challenges? Almost 25% of their student body falls into this category. The Indus School Council Society, spearheaded by Monique Williams, is raising funds for a much-needed new accessible playground at the Indus School. I have been proud to write several Letters of Support. I would like to share some excerpts with you: “The Accessible Playground Project will result in these children being able to participate with the other students in play activities in a safe manner. This will foster better academic outcomes as well as increased self-esteem, a sense that there are no limits on what they are capable of, and perhaps most importantly will build an inclusive environment where children of all levels of physical ability will realize that, at heart, they share a common life experience. Shared play fosters tolerance for others regardless of superficial differences and cannot but help make better, healthier citizens. This facility will be the first of its kind in SE Rocky View County…” “Outside of school hours the playground will be open to the local community and visitors to the Recreation Centre. This will be a major benefit to parents with, for example, one child in figure skating and who have other children with them…” “I have had the great pleasure of participating in various fundraising initiatives in the Indus Community since before I was elected to serve Chestermere-Rocky View as the MLA. One outstanding feature of the Indus area is the community spirit and volunteerism. When there are community projects, the community turns out in force to contribute money, equipment, and labour to ensure the project is completed. I am fully confident that in addition to this grant the ISCS will be able to secure other public grants and private donations as well as a large component of donated labour sufficient to bring this project to fruition. As a musician I would be happy to donate my talents to fundraisers for this project.” If you can contribute money or labour to this project, call Monique at 403-934-6695. Let’s get ‘er done! On a final note, October 16 and the Municipal and School Trust-

ee elections are fast approaching. Local issues touch all of us and these are the folks charged with making local decisions. If you reside in Chestermere, there will be an All Candidates Forum Wednesday, October 4 7-9 PM at the Chestermere Recreation Centre. If you reside in SE Rocky View, it will be at the Indus Recreation Centre on Thursday, October 12 from 7-9 PM. Here’s your chance to listen to the candidates, ask them about issues, and give them your input. Please research the candidates and above all, please VOTE. Did you just turn 18? You have a precious gift: your vote. Thousands of your fellow Canadians fought and were injured or paid the ultimate sacrifice to give you this privilege. By exercising your right to vote in a thoughtful, informed way you honour their legacy in the best way possible. As always, we love to hear from you.

Tips for Planning a

Disneyland Vacation For many people, planning a Disneyland Vacation is part of the fun of the vacation itself! For others, however, it can be a headache. Before you start planning your vacation, determine whether or not you are really up to planning the trip yourself or not. If you don’t want to plan your own trip, you have several options. Of course, you can have a travel agent make all of the arrangements for you, but for the best Disneyland experience, you might be better off using the Disney Vacation Planning Services. Either way, you can have every single aspect of your trip planned for you. Once you get there, all you will need to do is follow your itinerary. If you prefer the fun involved in planning your Disneyland vacation yourself, there are some things that you absolutely must not leave out of the planning stage. Before you can decide what you will be doing at Disneyland, you must determine what dates you will be there. The parks offer different things at different types of the year, with many different themes and entertainment to choose from. Once you know when you will be at Disneyland, the next step is to figure out what you will be doing each day that you are there. Once you’ve set up your travel arrangements and your hotel reservations, there are a few more things you must consider. Food is one thing you might want to arrange in advance. Disneyland is a very popular place, and having reservations at

www.wheatlandarts.ca

some of the more popular restaurants is recommended. These reservations can be made well in advance – before you ever leave home. When planning what attractions at Disneyland you want to visit, use a map of Disneyland as a guide. This will make it easier to schedule time for attractions that are near each other. You want to see and do as much as possible, so as much walking or travel time as you can. Keep your budget in mind. Often, by making arrangements through travel agents or through the Disneyland Vacation Planning Services, you will be able to get better deals – which can save you money. Look for these deals, and save as much money as you can on your hotel and food. If you have small children with you, keep their priorities in mind – they have less interest in where they will sleep and the food that they will eat, and more interest in what they will see and do!

Beverage Dissemination Officer – Can I get a Coke with a side of chocolate? I see a multitude of job ads in the course of a typical week at work. As a Career Coach, a significant portion of my 9 to 5 (when not assisting clients with their employment skills) is spent online scouring through job boards and company websites while sipping my favourite carbonated beverage. I don’t always read the employment ads word for word and for the most part I have a pretty good idea of what a company is looking for based on the job title. Job titles, for the most part, sum up a position well. Receptionist – the person that welcomes and receives clients and guests. Project Coordinator – the person in charge of coordinating projects. Automotive Sales – someone who sales automotives. Teacher – umm someone who teaches. See? Easy to understand, easy to know what the person’s job role and responsibilities would be. However, the new trend is to be creative with job titles. I blame Subway; they were one of the first companies to get creative and now employs “Sandwich Artists.” With Sandwich Artists making

I simply won’t stand for subpar subs.” VaynerMedia, a digital media company, recently hired a Chief Heart Officer. Now I would think that a heart officer may have to have a background in cardiology or at least cardiopulmonary resuscitation. I’d be wrong. At Vayner, the Chief Heart Office is responsible for reaching out and connecting one-on-one with the employees to ensure they are feeling valued. And here I thought that was what pay cheques were for. Happiness Hero’s apparently is also a new job title. In my mind, this would be the person that pops into my office and leaves behind offers to complete my month end reports and leaves me stockpiles of chocolate and Coke Zero. Again, I would be wrong, for Happiness Hero is a new title for IT Support. Sadly, chocolate and Coke a Cola are not part of the job description. How about this one? Innovation Sherpa. “So Mikey, what do you want to be when you grow up?” “I am going to be an Innovation Sherpa; I shall innovate while sherpaing…” Ya, I don’t get it. Apparently, the Innovation Sherpa doesn’t have to carry coworkers briefcases up the stairs while the rest take the elevator. Who’d a figured? What they really do – not a clue, and that’s after reading the entire job posting. A local neighbourhood establishment recently posted that they were hiring a Beverage Dissemination Officer. Not a friggin clue what that meant so I read further. It’s a bartender – they were hiring a bartender! For all that is holy just say bartender already. Same thing with Thought Leader. Can’t you just say Team Supervisor? So here is my problem with all these quirky titles. When I am searching job boards for clients (and on days when I run out of coke and chocolate, for myself) I don’t type Beverage Dissemination Officer into the search engine and I have never typed in Sorcere of Talent (Human Resources). Indeed doesn’t send me alerts for Word Wizard even though I am always interested in writing gigs. I can’t imagine introducing myself to a new client by saying I’m your Livelihood Preperation Ninja. Trends come and trends go and this is one trend I hope is quickly shown the door by the Portal Ambassador of Good Will. That would be the doorman. On September 19th, a significant number of candidates submitted nomination papers to indicate an interest in running for municipal office in Alberta.

Subsequently, election signs appeared everywhere. Of course, those wishing to be elected are seeking support from voters. Accordingly, your participation is necessary for a difference to occur. Ultimately, on October 16th, citizens exercise their rights, step up to their responsibility and vote to decide who serves for the next four years. Historically Speaking First and foremost, Canadian rights come with responsibility. In this case specifically, participation in free elections at every level. Unfortunately, despite increased public vitriol regarding politicians, Canadians involvement in the electoral process is low. By and large, only 25 - 30% of the population decides who governs. Paradoxically, new Canadians, who may not enjoy this privilege in their country of origin, engage actively in the process. For instance, this is clearly demonstrated by these stats from Alberta Municipal Election 2013. • Town of Chestermere - 25% participation o Mayor was acclaimed and 6 Councillors were elected. 2,571 people voted from 10,000 eligible voters • Town of Strathmore - 28% participation o Mayor and 5 Councillors were elected. 2,559 people voted from a pool of 9,106 eligible voters • Wheatland County - 29% participation o 5 Councillors were acclaimed and 2 Councillors were elected. 576 people voted from 2008 eligible voters An Increased Interest At this point, interest in holding office following the 2017 elec-

tion looks significantly different. • City of Chestermere - 5 candidates for Mayor, 15 candidates for 6 Council positions • Town of Strathmore - 2 candidates for Mayor, 11 candidates for 5 Council positions • Wheatland County - 1 Councillor acclaimed, 16 candidates for 6 Council positions Arguably, with more individuals running for office, a shift occurred somewhere during the last four years. As a consequence of changes in the economy and the world’s social structure, the focus shifted. In addition, many people expect government at all levels to provide a degree of security albeit with fewer resources. As a consequence, an "us versus them" position evolves. Strangely enough, despite the rhetoric, ratepayers and elected officials alike we are in this together for the long haul. Is a Brighter Future Possible? At this point, we do not know what the future holds; however, a new model for public engagement and decision-making bears consideration. Ultimately, elected officials, ratepayers, and staff need to listen to learn and understand rather than to argue, dispute or silence critics. In fact, it is time to find areas of agreement so we move forward efficiently to bring effective, balanced growth and well-being for all. For this reason, remember “alone we can do little but together we can accomplish much”. Further, our civic responsibility does not end with the election. In the same manner, we seek to make a difference by running for office and voting, we create a better world by investing time t0 build relationships and community. Vote on Monday, October 16. Then, consider your future role in building community. For this reason, Lolly Daskal reminds us, "It takes each of us to make a difference for all of us."

ASK THE VET! 6 Simple Tips for Exercising Your Senior Cat I have always said that if you get a couple of kittens, you can cancel your cable subscription. Kittens are fuzzy little packages of boundless energy that can amuse themselves and you for hours on end. As our cats get older and enter into their senior years, however, they become more sedentary; according to Cornell University, that in turn makes them more prone to obesity, which puts them at increased risk of other serious medical conditions such as: • Diabetes • Osteoarthritis • Heart disease Unfortunately, your cat is not likely to ever walk past a mirror, catch a glimpse of herself, and vow to eat less and exercise more. And not every cat is going to be up for taking leash walks. So here are some simple tips to get your senior cat up and moving more.

1. Try using toys

Get your cat some new toys. Even if she has a basket of old favourites, get her some new and novel ones. And not just the ones that you think are cute. Figure out what she likes, so she’ll play with them. Ask yourself: • Does she like noise or not? • Texture or no texture? • Is she a catnip junkie or could she care less? • Does she like boxes? • Does she like bags? • Does she like crumbled paper to bat around the room? Anything that interests her and is safe is a good choice. (As tempting as it may be, stay away from string toys since string can be swallowed and cause serious problems.)

2. Provide towers

Cat trees aren’t only for show. Cats love to jump and climb up high, especially if it puts them in a position to look down on you or

to watch birds and other wildlife out the windows. Just be aware of your aging cat’s abilities/limitations and make your choice of tower one that she can actually surmount.

3. Make treats count

It’s natural that you want to give your cat treats and rewards for exercising, but make them count. Make her work for them. Put them up high on that tower. Put them inside toys that act as puzzles so your cat has to play to get the treats out. Roll them across the floor one at a time so your cat has to chase them (what my wife calls ‘kibble hockey’). Do something that requires more energy expenditure than just plopping them down in front of your cat’s sweet face.

4. Transform the environment

Again, use everyday activities to your advantage and encourage your cat to get up and move. Changing the location of the litter pan might not work in everybody’s favour, but try feeding your cat on a higher plain – especially if your cat has free choice access to dry food. If your cat has to climb steps or jump up on something to get to the food, she might be just a little bit more motivated to make the effort. Just imagine how it would impact your snacking if you had to get up off the couch and walk into the kitchen every time you wanted another potato chip. Again (as with cat towers), always make sure that your cat can get to the food. Take baby steps, as it were; you can always make it harder over time.

5. Tap into that inner tiger

Use your cat’s natural predatory instincts to really engage her in play with you. Use laser pointers, wand toys, feathers and the like to tempt and to tease your cat into playing. Note: Especially with a laser pointer be careful to always let the cat catch something (anything) in the end. You don’t want to frustrate your cat. You want to exercise and then reward. Chase her, play hide and seek, and enjoy interacting with your cat. You’ll both get a little bit of exercise in the process.

6. Tailor your exercises

Always tailor any exercise program to your cat’s individual situation and abilities. Talk to your veterinarian to make sure that your senior cat is healthy enough for increased activity, to address any physical constraints she might have, and to choose activities that are safe and appropriate. Have fun while working together toward a happier, healthier, senior cat. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, you should always visit or call your veterinarian -- they are your best resource to ensure the health and well-being of your pets.
