Suddenly, she burst out laughing. “Listen to this,” she said. “There’s a classified ad here where a guy is offering to swap his wife for a season ticket to the stadium.” “Hmmm,” her husband said, not looking up from his magazine. Teasing him, Sarah said, “Would you swap me for a season ticket?”“Absolutely not,” he said. “How sweet,” Sarah said. “Tell me why not.” “Season’s more than half over,” he said.

Health tips from a BAD doctor.

Q: Doctor, I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it... don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

It’s very cool and very nice to be appreciated by so many loyal readers. But back to the recipes! You still have time to send them by mail or email - we really want a big, fat, fun cook book. Now that May has finally arrived, my fingers have been itching to get out and start my yard work - you know, all that fun stuff like cleaning the flower beds, trimming the bushes, picking up doggie do-do and planning what flowers to plant this year. Greenview Nurseries has a huge selection of really beautiful hanging pots to choose from and the Garden Centre at Strathmore Home Hardware is open so make sure you shop local when you are planning your garden this year! Enjoy the sunshine and every single day of May, and remember; “A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive events and outcomes. VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE NEWSY NEIGHBOR With the New Year have come new challenges for us at The Newsy Neighbor. Canada Post has increased our mailing costs dramatically – we have always worked really hard to be able to send out our publication free of charge to everyone in our distribution area. We are really sad and upset that due to the increase in postal rates, we have no choice but to change a few locations. We don’t want to leave anyone out and we really want you to continue to enjoy our publication, so we came up with the idea to offer subscriptions. This was not a easy decision to make but we must stop distribution to: Balzac, Irricana & Cluny Please subscribe by filling out the form below and we will make sure you receive your very own self-addressed copy of The Newsy Neighbor each and every month. Sorry for the change – but only those in the areas listed above will be affected – all others will still receive The Newsy Neighbor every month Free of charge. If you have problems receiving your magazine each month and you are in our free mailing distribution, please email us with your full address. Email: newsyneighbor@gmail.com If you are outside of our mailing distribution and would like to start receiving The Newsy Neighbor, please fill out a subscriptions form. This is a wonderful gift for a friend or relative who you think would enjoy our magazine.

Thank-you to all of you who have already subscribed to The Newsy Neighbor. We will be sending you our magazine in a clear plastic bag and we are calling this our Goodie Bag, because, not only will you be receiving the magazine but other goodies from advertisers and gifts from us. Coupons - samples and other fun and interesting items. It will be like having a Birthday each and every month. What could be better than that. We’re excited. Thank You for supporting The Newsy Neighbor

Decisions were made by going ‘eeny-meeny-miney-moe’? Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, ‘Do Over!’? ‘Race issue’ meant arguing about who ran the fastest? Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening? It wasn’t odd to have two or three ‘Best Friends’? Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot? Saturday morning cartoons weren’t 30-minute commercials for action figures? ‘Oly-oly-oxen-free’ made perfect sense? Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles? The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team? War was a card game? Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle? Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin? Water balloons were the ultimate weapon? You could buy candy cigarettes? It took three minutes for the TV to warm up? When a quarter was a decent allowance? Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box?

Sinbad’s has been completely renovated by the wonderful new owners Amin and Iris Mohamed; they had a vision for change and it all started in September 2009. Their huge new patio is the only place to he on those hot summer days to enjoy a mug of Sinbad’s cool and refreshing special brewed beer. It can easily accommodate 110 people. The inside has been completely renovated with new booths, new decor, and a whole new attitude with old school values! When you head over to Sinbad’s for lunch, make sure you say hello to Shelley Sharuga (everyone’s mum) during the day, who has been serving Strathmore for the past 17 years. The fan favourite Gerald Staub, a red seal chef imported from Winnipeg, will cater to all your hunger needs. Make sure to come check out Nicole Cosh’s homemade soups – made daily. Recently added to the Sinbad’s Team, straight out of retirement, is Greg (Thumper)Thompson, formerly Langdon’s hospitality (that guy). The staff at

Sinbad’s goes above and beyond the call of duty and makes sure every customer leaves happy and satisfied with their experience – which isn’t hard!! Sinbad’s has re-vamped their entire menu. Everything is made from scratch and made to the best of quality. That should say a lot! You definitely need to try the home cut French Fries – best fries in town for sure! Sinbad’s has daily lunch specials and everything is made to perfection. Your food is served quickly, it tastes delicious, and it is highly recommended by the Newsy Neighbor! Don’t forget your corporate lunches – Sinbad’s also does catering! Give them a call at 403-934-9338 or e-mail at sinbads@telusplanet.net today! At Sinbad’s, entertainment is their passion! They do private functions with shuttle bus services available for the larger groups, sports teams discounts, and more! They have 3 pool tables, arcade games, a large dance floor, and they showcase every sports event from UFC, to Football, to PPV Hockey (and all hockey games for that matter)! Not to mention they host theme parties, they bring in local bands every weekend, and they are constantly thinking of bigger and better ways to entertain you! Friend to the Town: Sinbad’s knows that owning a business is a give-and-take situation, and that is why they like to help out. They do fundraising for local charities, and they are constantly looking for more ways to help and cater to others’ needs. Sinbad’s is a great addition to Strathmore – come on in for a visit and take a second look at all they have to offer. See you there! Come watch ALL sporting events on our BIG screens! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

1010 Westridge Road. Strathmore, AB T1P1H8 BODY PARTS – YOUR LIVER The liver is one of the largest and most complex organs in the body. It stores vital energy and nutrients, manufactures proteins and enzymes necessary for good health, protects the body from disease, and breaks down and helps remove harmful toxins, like alcohol, from the body. The liver is necessary for survival – there is no way to compensate for the absence of liver function. Your liver has a wide range of functions including detoxification, protein synthesis and the production of biochemical’s necessary for digestion. Your liver lies below the diaphragm in your abdomen. The liver is the largest glandular organ with a weight of about 1.5 kg (3.3 lb.). It is a reddish brown organ with four lobes of unequal size and shape. The various functions of the liver are carried out by the liver cells or hepatocytes. Currently, there is no artificial organ or device capable of emulating all the functions of the liver. Some functions can be emulated by liver dialysis, an experimental treatment for liver failure. The liver supports almost every organ in the body and is vital for survival. Because of its strategic location and multidimensional functions, the liver is prone to many diseases. The most common include: Infections such as hepatitis A, B, C, E, alcohol damage, fatty liver, cirrhosis, cancer and drug damage. However, the liver has a great capacity to regenerate and has a large reserve capacity. In most cases, the liver only produces symptoms after extensive damage. The classic signs of liver damage include: Pale stool, dark urine, Bilirubin (itching is the most common complaint by people who have liver failure), swelling of the abdomen, ankles and feet occurs because the liver fails to make albumin, excessive fatigue and bruising. The ideal way to look at damage to the liver is with a biopsy. The liver is the only internal organ capable of natural regeneration of lost tissue; as little as 25% of the liver can regenerate into a whole liver. A human liver is known to grow back in as little as a week to no more than a few weeks, due to hyptochronatin cells in the remaining liver. Thomas Starzl in the United

MAY 2010 FAMILY PAGE

By: KATHRYN HARTWELL

May is such a happy month. The robins are back chirping their cheerful song all day long, the sun is shining (I love the feeling of the heat of its rays on my face), and the tulips are poking their owers through the cool winter dirt, reaching for the heat of the May sunshine – what a happy month. It could not be a better time for a Mother’s Day celebration. May 9th is Mother’s Day - I hope you have something very special planned for your incredible mother on her very special day! I have included some easy craft ideas and recipes for you to use for your celebration; and because May is also our special golf issue, I have also included a golf word search. It doesn’t matter how you spend your month of May - just make sure to enjoy each and every day of it. Let today be the first day of the rest of your life!

A PRETTY KEY CHAIN FOR YOUR MOM – WITH YOUR OWN SPECIAL MESSAGE Make it with any beads you choose - there are lots of different kinds at dollar stores or craft stores! With pretty coloured beads and a personal message, your mom will cherish this gift forever. Use alphabet beads to spell "MY MOM'S THE BEST", “LOVE YOU MOM” or YOUR OWN SPECIAL MESSAGE. Use colourful beads to fill in gaps (approximately 30-40), and colourful charms for the end of the key chain. You first need a 24" stretchy jewelry cord for your keychain ring, cut into two equal pieces. Line up the two pieces of jewelry cord side by side. Gather one end together and tie in a triple knot to the keychain ring. Thread 4-5 colourful beads onto one side of the jewelry cord. Thread on the letters, making sure they are facing the correct direction. Follow with 4-5 more colourful beads. Then more letters. Add 4-5 more beads. Carefully set the finished cord aside, taping the end of the cord to the table to keep the beads from falling off. On the other string, add 3-4 colourful beads, and then the letters, following the same instructions as the first side. Lay the two strings alongside each other and add beads to the shortest side to get them even. Holding the two ends of the jewelry cord as close to the last beads as possible, thread one last colourful bead onto BOTH strings. Run the string through the bead again by looping it through the top and pulling it tight. Tie the charm to the end of the string, knot it several times and trim ends. Don't trim it too close! For younger children you can use pony beads and larger alphabet beads as well as hemp or thicker jewelry cord. Page 20

Soak bread slices in mixture until saturated. Cook bread on each side until golden brown. Serve hot. YOUR MOM IS A QUEEN – CHAIR COVER Mother's Day is the day that all mothers should be treated as if they were queens! Make this lovely chair cover and give Mom the royal treatment. • Standard white pillowcase • 4 brown paper grocery bags • White craft glue • Scissors • 2 spools of colorful ribbon • Sequins in a variety of colors • Pencil • Gold paint pen • Colorful craft jewels • Colorful pom-poms • Pink and silver glitter glue Start with an ironed pillowcase. Insert the four paper bags inside the pillowcase. This will keep the glue from seeping through the fabric and sticking to the other side. Draw a crown in the middle of the pillow case and print the word "QUEEN" in big letters above the crown. Put white craft glue around each letter and place sequins on the glue. Decorate the crown using pom-poms, and glitter glue. Line the outer edges of the pillowcase using ribbon, adhering with white craft glue. You can pretty much decorate the pillow case any way you like – Just use your imagination. Let everything dry completely before removing the paper bags. Place pillowcase over the back of Mom's chair. DO NOT WASH carefully fold the pillowcase and store in a zipper storage bag until next year.

The phrase "working mother" is redundant. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Colour Me MOM WILL LOVE THESE BAKED EGGS These individual egg melts, surrounded by a strip of smoky bacon and sprinkled with Cheddar cheese, are a delicious way to start your day. And because they're individually baked, they can be made to order. • 1 slice bacon • 1 teaspoon melted butter • 1 egg • 1/4 slice Cheddar cheese Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown, but still flexible. Wrap bacon slice around the inside of a muffin cup. Place a teaspoon of butter (or bacon grease) in the bottom of muffin cup. Drop in egg. Bake in preheated oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Place 1/4 slice of cheese over egg, and continue cooking until cheese is melted and egg is cooked. The Newsy Neighbor Page 21

Make Golf Enjoyable to All by Kev Woodward

Out on the course the other day, we were playing behind a really rude, lousy, foursome and it was truly awful. I am sure they knew better, but just did not care. That said, I thought I would quickly go through a few steps of golf etiquette and what you need to know in order to avoid being labeled as selfish out on the golf course. Golf is a game of honor. It is easy to cheat at golf, so every player is on his honor. Those who don’t play honorably are usually unpopular and will find it hard to get opponents as word soon gets round the club. Golf has its own code of etiquette that everyone should follow and obey. Here are just a few that I try to practice. When it is your turn to play, be ready. When walking to your ball, make your decision about the club to use, whether you will hit straight or with draw or fade, the line you will take and so on. That way, when you arrive at the ball, you are ready to hit. You don’t have to hurry, just be ready and make your play. The norm is that first shot on any hole goes to the player with the lowest score on the previous hole. If that hole was tied, then the tee goes to the player with the lowest score on the previous hole. If everyone is clear about this, there will be no wasting time deciding who takes the next shot at the next tee. Play it different if you want. Just make sure everyone in your group knows and agrees. Make sure those in front of you have cleared out of range before you hit. Make sure everyone in your foursome is behind you when you hit. Common courtesy as well as sensible health and safety. Pay attention to the group behind you. If you are holding them up, let them play through. Some of us play faster than others. Groups that are unaware of others create annoyance and eventually anger at their selfishness. Take care of the course. Repair your divots. Repair any ball marks. Replace any loose grass or turf in the center of the hole or anywhere there is loose grass. It is the responsibility of every golfer to look after the course. Remember to rake the sand smooth after you have used the bunkers. Leaving them in a mess for the next group is bad form and selfish. Park your cart away from the greens, tees, and bunkers. Park on the left side of the green, nearest the next tee. One thing I see a lot is the people in front of me, are crowding around the hole filling in their score cards, after they have finished the hole. After you have finished a hole, move out the way to mark your score card. Mark your card on the way to the next tee. How hard is that? These are a few things that will make the game better for all of us.

9 Tips Virtually Guaranteed to Help You Avoid Discouragement in your Game of Golf by Kev Woodward

Crash! The clubs hit the floor in the corner of the changing rooms. Thump! The sound that the golfer made, dropping heavily onto the bench after another bad round. “I am gonna sell those darn clubs and get a new hobby!”. The ensuing silence was punctuated only by the others, changing as quietly as they could. They recognised the signs of false discouragement but knew better than to speak at that time. After all, this latest defeat was aginst a gal who could beat the club pro 50% of the time so losing by 8 strokes was really a good achievement. Trouble was, the golfer had been playing better players regularly for a couple of months now and had not won much. False discouragement (which is discouragement not based on facts) can place you in a position of defeat. Repeated defeats are not good for your ego. You must have some successes to keep from getting discouraged. 30 minutes later in the 19th, over a glass of carrot juice (OK then, I admit, it was really beer), the golfers buddies plucked up the courage to talk. From that conversation came these practical golf tips that any golfer can use to avoid false discouragement ... Tip 1 Do not play with golfers (on a regular basis) who are better than you are unless the handicaps are such that you win at least half of the time. Tip 2 Do not limit yourself to players who always outdrive you in the hope that you will learn from them. You won’t. Get a golf training DVD and practice as much as you can in the backyard or on the driving range. Tip 3 Do not increase your betting when you will have to come from behind to win. You will just get more upset about losing more money on the golf course! Tip 4 Do not bet against poorer golfers if they demand handicaps which will almost certainly ensure their winning. Tip 5 Do not attempt golf shots you do not have in your bag. Unless you practice a tricky golf shot, it is almost certainly going to fail under the stress of playing it cold in a comp. Tip 6 Do not lie about your golf score or true handicap. It is better psychologically to win in a lower flight than to lose in a higher one. Play at the right level for your skills. Tip 7 Do not concede any putts to yourself or your opponent that can be missed. You may think you are playing badly, when in reality you are playing your regular game. Tip 8 Do not pull against your golf opponent. Tip 9 Do not play with people who increase your anxiety. Avoid being stressed if you fluff a shot that you normally make. It is OK not to be perfect! And here is a bonus tip - keep a journal so that you can see how well you are really playing golf, especially important when playing out of your league. So when you are feeling discouraged, think of the good shots that you usually play. Get things in perspective, if you played Tiger or the Great White Shark, would you expect to win? Hey, golf is supposed to be a game of fun…keep it that way and you can enjoy it for the rest of your life.

Golf is so popular simply because it is the best game in the world at which to be bad. ~A.A. Milne www.thenewsyneighbor.com

My mom is a neverending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune. ~Graycie Harmon

Get Out of My Car - And Into My Head.

The thoughts of an un-oppressed, independent, truly, madly, deeply sarcastic to the core woman with a thirst for love, life and sheer enjoyment of all of the above. My muse is life; children, my partner, sexuality, friends, along with people and their oddities and extreme stupidity. Yes, I really think about this stuff. It’s a true story.

MOM

I didn’t really have a mom growing up. I had this group of “interested” women who were working to “guide” me through the female-type things, but I had a Mr. Mom. I don’t know anyone who has a dad like mine, but I also don’t know anyone who has a mom like I do. My mom is a pretty amazing and strong woman, and even with her short comings while I was growing up – she’s still one of the women who I admire the most. My mom made some poor choices in her life – she used substances, and she broke hearts, the big and the small. She knows that, she’s acknowledged her demons, which had to be very difficult for her. Think about something that you’ve said or done to someone, and think about how hard it is for you to not only acknowledge, but own your role in the break down of that relationship. Magnify that by 100, and you might have a fraction of what my mother faced with my sister and I. She got on her knees as the base of the Throne, and begged for the strength and forgiveness, and by the grace of the Lord, she was given just that. With that strength, she came to us, and she did her best to make amends; to mend the little hearts she’d broken so many years before. In the past 12 and a half years, she’s abandoned her addictions to alcohol, drugs, and cigarettes. She took herself to a new level and re-did her high school education; went to college … and in October of 2008, 17 days after her 60th birthday, I had the supreme honor of witnessing one of the most inspiring and empowering moments of not only my life, but my mother’s. I stood tall, and with pride as she walked down the main aisle at the University of Lethbridge to accept her Master’s Degree in Health Science. My mother is on the other side of the fence now; she’s the healer. Mom, I love you - I’m so proud of you, and so thankful for your wellness; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Happy Mother’s Day. Kait Au Lait http://www.itwillseldommakesense.blogspot.com Page 26

If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands? ~Milton Berle Mothers are fonder than fathers of their children because they are more certain they are their own. ~Aristotle When you are a mother, you are never really alone in your thoughts. A mother always has to think twice, once for herself and once for her child. ~Sophia Loren, Women and Beauty

Dear Mom, We have been racking our brains trying to think of what to get you for Mother’s Day. We want to get you something really special. Can you give us a list of what you really want? Love, Your Children My Darlings, What thoughtful children I have! As your mother, I work, work, work all day every day so any kind of pampering is definitely something I would absolutely love to get for Mother’s Day! Hair Services ~ What woman doesn’t love a fresh new hair ‘do? The idea of sitting down and letting someone else do all of the work is music to my ears! Salons can provide customers with not only cuts, but colour, perms, and even a special hair style in case your father decides to take me out on the town! Spa Services ~ While I’m running ragged everyday with hockey practice, ballet and everything in between, it’s nice to have my feet and hands tended to in a relaxing environment. Or even a few minutes in the “sun” in a tanning bed - ahh the sounds of the beach are calling my name! Some spas even offer extras such as teeth whitening, waxing, body wraps or products like AgeLoc Galvanic Spa (to get rid of all those fine lines and wrinkles you gave me over the years!). The gift of a day away to be pampered and made to feel like a queen is always something a mother wants, and not just for Mother’s Day – for all year around! Quite often salons and spas have monthly, weekly or even daily specials so check back often! Did you know that on average, women go to the salon every six weeks, which is the average time it takes for your roots to grow through, with your natural colour? One visit I will just have my roots done, the next I may have the highlights and roots done, and the next I probably would have it all coloured! When it comes to manicures and pedicures, getting each done every 2 weeks, or twice a month, is reasonable to keep your nails and skin looking fresh and healthy. As for tanning, when you first begin tanning it’s best to start off going everyday for just a few minutes until you build up a slight base tan before you start staying in longer. Tanning salons have different specials every month so keep an eye out on that! I hope I provided you with enough suggestions as to what to get your loving mother for Mother’s Day. And don’t forget to get me a card! Love, Mom Teresa Cooper. Xhale Salon & Spa. Langdon, Alberta. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

14 Spruce Park Dr. Strathmore, AB T1P 1J2 Phone: (403) 934-3802 www.homehardware.ca The Newsy Neighbor asked Strathmore RV.. what do I need to do to get my RV ready for the season? Now that camping season is upon us it is the perfect time for preventative maintenance. An ounce of prevention can be the difference between you enjoying your first camping trip of the season or wishing you would have stayed home where you would be warm and dry. Dead batteries, malfunctioning propane systems, leaking roofs can all happen when you neglect to do a preseason inspection. For the most part the vast majority of RV owners store their unit outside each winter where the cold weather can really take its toll. Batteries left in an RV over the winter slowly lose their charge and once discharged the acid turns to water and then they freeze. Even if you are at a power site without battery power your fridge and furnace will not operate on some units. Keep in mind as well your batteries are only as strong as your weakest battery. Making sure the propane system in your RV is sound is especially important because of the potential for fire or an explosion. The anti-freeze needs to be flushed out and is the perfect time to have your water system inspected to avoid any surprises on your first trip out. Checking your roof vents and sealant for potential leaks is an excellent preventative measure. The roof vents and roof sealant is probably the most neglected thing on the RV. By the time a water leak can be detected on the inside of your RV potential damage is already done. Checking your brakes, bearings, and suspension once a year for any problems is an excellent preventative measure and is one that you most definitely don’t want to neglect. Instead of being one of those people who on their first trip of the year discover that their batteries are dead or that their furnace doesn’t work and they freeze invest the time to do the preventative maintenance. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

A state trooper pulled a car over and told the man driving that he was going 50 mph in a 40 mph zone. “I was only going 40!” the driver protested. “Not according to my radar,” the trooper said. “Yes, I was!” the man shouted back. “No you weren’t!” the trooper said. Stress A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked; ‘How heavy is this glass of water?’ Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.’ He continued, ‘And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can.’ So, my friend, put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don’t pick it up again until after you’ve rested a while. Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life: * Accept that some days you’re the pigeon, and some days you’re the statue. * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. * Drive carefully. It’s not only cars that can be “recalled” by their maker. * If you can’t be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. * If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it. * It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others. * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won’t have a leg to stand on. * Nobody cares if you can’t dance well - just get up and dance. * When everything’s coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. * You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. * We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, all are different colours, but they all have to live in the same box. *A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour. Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you today! www.thenewsyneighbor.com

~DEATH~ WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, ‘Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.’ Very quietly, the doctor said, ‘I don’t know.’ ‘You don’t know? You’re, a Christian man and you don’t know what’s on the other side?’ The doctor was holding the handle of the door. On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on the doctor with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, ‘Did you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He didn’t know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing... I know my Master is there and that is enough.’ Page 34

WORMS

Mrs. Brown had taught first grade for twenty years or more. She was a real good teacher; all the folks knew that for sure. One day in her zeal to teach her students helpful things, She chose drinking whiskey, and the problems that it brings. She poured some whiskey in a glass so they could plainly see, Then showed to them an earthworm. All the students squealed with glee. “See how he wiggles and moves so fast,” said Mrs. Brown, as she dropped him straight down in the glass. They didn’t understand. look inside.” They looked, and it was plain to see, he had shriveled up and died. “Now children,” she said tenderly, “you’ve all looked at this worm. “Can anyone explain today the lesson that you’ve learned?” All the students shook their heads, but Johnny raised his hand. “I know, I know,” Little Johnny said. “I know! I understand!” Mrs. Brown saw Johnny’s hand and she was very glad. With glowing eyes and a happy heart, she looked at him and said, “All right, Johnny. Stand up, now, and tell them what you learned.” “If you drink whiskey all the time, you never will have worms!”

I can only imagine the beauty of your smile, In the far away places of my mind. I can only imagine how you loved me, And how you must have been very kind. I can only imagine how you must have felt When I took my first step, And how you would feel my pain when I fell, I imagine you even wept. I can only imagine you there For those special events in my life. I can only imagine you there When I suffered great loss and strife. I can only imagine your words If we sat for a chat over tea. I can only imagine the wisdom of old You would gladly impart to me. I can only imagine the feel Of your arms around me tight. I can only imagine your soft kiss On my cheek so very light. I can only imagine you near. I can only imagine you here. I can only imagine so clear! Pat Mullin

To suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy then is to suffer. But suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be unhappy one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness. I hope you’re getting this down.” ~ Woody Allen

The Newsy Neighbor asked Barrett Vet Practice; Why do I need to vaccinate my pets?

Vaccination 101 - Many people wonder why veterinarians recommend vaccines for their pets, and whether or not they are necessary. Here are a few notes with my general recommendations and approach to vaccinations. What is vaccination? A vaccine is a form of infectious material (an “antigen”) which is presented to an animal in order to stimulate the immune system. The virus or bacteria in the vaccine can be killed, or modified (weakened) in order to prevent a case of the disease which we are trying to protect against. The vaccine is usually injected under the skin, although vaccines against respiratory infections are often given as an intranasal spray, which is quite effective. When the body is presented with antigens, the immune system responds by producing antibodies. Antibodies fit onto the surface of the virus or bacteria, and deactivate it- thus preventing an infection from occurring. Upon initial exposure to a vaccine, a temporary production of antibodies occurs, usually within a week. When subsequent doses of the vaccine are administered, the immune system sets up more long term production of the antibodies. This is why “booster vaccines” are given at 1 month intervals to animals when they are first vaccinated- to “teach” the immune system that it needs to protect the animal against that disease on a long term basis. Once the immune system is primed, the vaccines need only be given when the levels of antibodies circulating in the animal decreases, which depends on the type of disease, the individual animal and factors such as stress, other illnesses etc. Without vaccination, some animals will become protected by exposure to low levels of the disease-causing organisms present in their environment. This stimulates their immune system in the same fashion that a vaccine does, and it can provide protection. Unfortunately, it is difficult to ensure that adequate exposure occurs, so that the animal is protected, without being infected! In order to determine if an animal is protected against a disease, a blood sample can be taken, and the levels of antibodies against a disease can be measured. Currently we can do this test (known as a titre test) for distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. Vaccines are one of the most important medical advances ever made, and have saved millions of lives, both human and animal. However, there can be too much of a good thing , and vaccination is probably the same. Overstimulation of the immune system may lead to other problems, so some veterinarians have adopted a “less is more” philosophy regarding protocols for our patients. Some vaccines have been developed so that they can be given Page 36

The Newsy Neighbor

less frequently. As well, challenging the immune system with fewer vaccines at a time seems to reduce the incidence of reactions or complications. When should vaccines be given? Here is a snapshot of the minimalistic approach that I take to vaccinations in my practice, and with my own dogs: Puppies are vaccinated against distemper, parvovirus and adenovirus at 6-8 weeks, with boosters given one and two months after the first vaccine. I boost again one year after the last puppy vaccine. After this time, I reduce the frequency of vaccination to every 3 years. I use a vaccine which has been proven to provide at least 3 years of protection. I offer clients the option of running an annual titre test to determine when we actually need to vaccinate, since some dogs will maintain adequate immunity for longer than 3 years. Rabies vaccine is administered separately from other vaccines if possible, and I give the first dose to young dogs sometime between 6-9 months of age. I boost one year later, and then only every 3 years, alternating so that the rabies is given one year, and the distemper/parvo booster in a different year. Titres can be done for rabies, but are more expensive and not (yet) accepted for travel to the USA. Kennel cough vaccines unfortunately do not seem to provide the long term immunity that I look for, so dogs that need this vaccine (dogs who are kennelled or exposed to lots of other dogs) are best vaccinated every 6-12 months. Kennel cough is not usually life-threatening, but it is upsetting to both dog and owner, and can last for 3 weeks or longer. In Alberta, we see quite a lot of giardiasis (“beaver fever”) and many of our water sources contain this organism. There is a vaccine for this, which I like, but it is unfortunately currently unavailable. In my practice I do not vaccinate for Lyme’s disease, or Leptospirosis, because I do not consider them to be risks in my area, and in 23 years of practice I have not seen cases of either of these diseases. I do not think the risk of over-vaccination warrants the use of these vaccines, but in other geographical regions, the situation may be different. I think that seeing my patients every year is definitely worthwhile, since many other health issues are picked up during the annual physical exam. Dr Beth Barrett owns Barrett Veterinary Practice in Dalemead Alberta. She grew up in the area, and has been a small animal and equine veterinarian for 22 years. CAT DIARY

Day 983 of my captivity.

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a ‘good little hunter’ I am.There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of ‘allergies.’ I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage. Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs. I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded. The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicate with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now... www.thenewsyneighbor.com

INTERESTING PET FACTS

• There are more than 200 different breeds of dogs. • Contrary to popular belief, dogs aren’t color blind; they can see shades of blue, yellow, green and gray. • Most domestic dogs are capable of reaching speeds up to about nineteen miles per hour when running at full speed. • Using their swiveling ears like radar dishes, experiments have shown that dogs can locate the source of a sound in 6/100ths of a second. • A cat can jump as much as seven times its height. • Cats have five toes on each front paw, but only four toes on each back paw. • Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten. • An adult cat can run about 12 miles per hour, and can sprint at nearly thirty miles per hour. • A cat’s tongue is scratchy because it’s lined with papillae—tiny elevated backwards hooks that help to hold prey in place. • Cats’ bodies are extremely flexible; the cat skeleton contains more than 230 bones (a human has about 206), and the pelvis and shoulders loosely attach to the spine. This adds to their flexibility and allows them to fit through very small spaces. • Cats have better memories than dogs. Tests conducted by the University of Michigan concluded that while a dog’s memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, a cat’s can last as long as 16 hours—exceeding even that of monkeys and orangutans. THINKING ABOUT PUPPIES? I have two of the best dogs in the world. Now, I know we all say that about our best friends – but mine are for sure the best. Our little girl Kayla is just a little over one year old and is going into heat for the second time. She is so pretty and wonderful we have thought about breeding her – she is a miniature long-haired Dachshund, but I’m a little afraid for her and me. For her because I would not forgive myself if something happened during puppy-birth and for me because I prob ably would not be able to find the perfect home for the puppies because no one would love them like I do. But, if you are thinking about getting a puppy, make sure you are prepared and ready for the responsibility. Too many dogs end up at the shelter because their owners didn’t really understand that having a pet is a lot of work and not all fun all the time. If you’re thinking of bringing a puppy into your family, be prepared for: 1. Mass destruction – Be prepared for your puppy to chew and chew and chew and not just those chew toys you bought them! They love your favorite heels, undergarments, the heels of running shoes, the edge of your area rug, the legs of your oak table and chairs and anything else really special to you. 2. Kennel training – This has become the way to house train your new puppy. First it will keep your pup from destroying the house while you’re away. Second, it will teach him bladder control (make sure you take him straight outside to the spot where you want him to go). If you do it right, it will teach him not to be afraid of the kennel – it can be a warm, safe place to be. 3. Teach the meaning of “NO” – Be consistent. Don’t HIT your pup, but firmly tell him No when you catch him in the act of doing something wrong. Praise him when he does what you want him to do. 4. Enforcing Rules – Set limits while your puppy is young. Be the pack leader – remember NO HITTING. Slowly count to ten (or one hundred) – know your rules and stick to them or you will confuse your puppy. 5. Accidents – No matter how hard you try you will have accidents. Good commercial cleaners made expressly for this purpose are available from pet stores. 6. LOTS OF LOVE. Regardless of whether you choose to adopt a young puppy or an older dog, please consider going to your local animal shelter. Shelters often have puppies and adults both, of all types and sizes – all waiting for a loving home. Adopt from a shelter and save a life. By: Kathryn Hartwell Page 38

An elderly couple had been experiencing declining memories, so they decided to take a power memory class where one is taught to remember things by association. A few days after the class, the old man was outside talking with his neighbour about how much the class helped him. “What was the name of the Instructor?” asked the neighbour. “Oh, ummmm, let’s see,” the old man pondered. “You know that flower, you know, the one that smells really nice but has those prickly thorns, what’s that flower’s name?” “A rose?” asked the neighbour. “Yes, that’s it,” replied the old man. He then turned toward his house and shouted, “Hey, Rose, what’s the name of the Instructor we took the memory class from?

Dear Newsy Neighbour; My husband is so into golf. We all pay at home when he has a poor golf game. He gets so grouchy and short with everyone. On the days he gets a good score, he is great with everyone, treats everyone out for dinner, etc. It’s like we hold our breath until after his game to find out what kind of a day it will be. What can I do?! - Hating golf season. Dear Hating golf season: It sounds like you are really getting teed off with this situation. Some people are very competitive and tend to rely on the results of their games as indicators of their worthiness and value as a person. They derive a sense of their importance and value from external things like how well they do in sports or how they feel they have impacted and impressed themselves or others. They take things personally because it’s not just a game to them. Their very sense of self-worth is tied into the results of how they have played. You can’t just tell them to take it easy or laugh it off or move on because their sense of well-being is being threatened when they don’t feel successful. Minimizing their situation would likely just infuriate them more. Try focussing on what they do well and attempt to broaden their perceived scope of success. The situation is really dependant on how they respond to their own criticism, so it’s not necessarily something that you are doing – it’s what they are doing to themselves. Some people tend to define themselves entirely by external events rather than accepting themselves for who they are – imperfections and all. Everything to them is conditional; if the conditions for success aren’t met perfectly, they internalize a sense of failure and react defensively. Perhaps you could come clean on your feelings about what is occurring. Sit down with your husband and let him know that you accept and love him for who he is, but that the behaviour is really destroying the sense of trust in the home. Let him know that you all are feeling powerless and fearful about his reactions to his golf performance. Perhaps in a very non-threatening way you could tell him that he is loved, but that the behaviour is not and it’s making things difficult for you. You might outline the behaviour that is causing a problem:

“It’s hard if you come home and yell at the kids and slam things around – it makes us all edgy and scared.” Perhaps you could outline the type of behaviour that would work for you and the family. “It’s great when you come home and react just like you do after a good day at work. There is no drama because you just get changed, take a shower and then come down and interact nicely with the family by talking normally and calmly, watching TV with us and then getting the kids ready for bed. I really appreciate those days.” These are just some quick suggestions and they may or may not have any effect on your husband. You might wish to encourage him to seek some counselling if the behaviour is abusive as there are some very effective NLP core state exercises available for people ready for change. What you can do individually is to let him know he is loved and appreciated, but that the behaviour is difficult to tolerate. Whether or not he’s ready or willing to change is up to him, but odds are he’s not enjoying his reaction any more than you are. Keep us posted with his progress and good luck. Johnny and his wife went to the State Fair every year. Every year Johnny would say, “I’d like to ride in that aeroplane.” And every year his wife would say, “I know, Johnny, but that aeroplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars.” This one year Johnny and his wife went to the fair and Johnny said, “I’m 71 years old. If I don’t ride that aeroplane this year I may never get another chance.” “ That aeroplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars.”, replied his wife. The pilot overheard them and said, “Folks, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take you both up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say one word, I won’t charge you, but if you say one word it’s ten dollars.” Johnny and his wife agree and up they go. The pilot does all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives, but not a word is heard. He does all his tricks over again, but still not a word. They land and the pilot turns to Johnny, “ I did everything I could think of to get you to yell out, but you didn’t.” Johnny replied, “Well, I was gonna say something when my wife fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars.” www.thenewsyneighbor.com

I AM An AVOCADO

My name is Adam Avocado. I come from a long line of distinguished Avocado’s. My great, great, great (too many!) great grandparents lived in South America since 8,000 B.C. Some of my cousins moved to Jamaica and the Asian tropical regions in the mid1800s and then other cousins moved to the United States in the early 20th century. We grow in tropical and subtropical countries, the major commercial producers nowadays include United States (Florida and California), Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Colombia. I am known as the Alligator Pear because of my shape and the leather–like appearance of my skin. My name is derived from the Aztec word “ahuacatl." I am a fruit from the Persea Americana, a tall evergreen tree that can grow up to 65 feet in height. I am a very good source of potassium, a mineral that helps regulate blood pressure and I contain oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that may help to lower cholesterol. One cup of avocado has 23% of the Daily Value for folate, a nutrient important for heart health. There was a study showing individuals who consume folate-rich diets have a much lower risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke than those who do not consume as much of this vital nutrient. You can add a few slices of avocado in your salad or mix some chopped avocado into your favourite salsa to add a rich creamy flavour, and I will greatly increase your body’s ability to absorb the healthpromoting carotenoids that vegetables provide. You may not believe it, but we help prevent oral cancer. Oral cancer is more likely to result in death than breast, skin, or cervical cancer, with a mortality rate of about 50%. due to late detection, according to Great Britain’s Mouth Cancer Foundation. But be careful - like bananas and chestnuts, avocados contain substances called chitinases that are associated with the latex-fruit allergy syndrome. If you have a latex allergy, you may very likely be allergic to these foods as well. There are lots of easy ways to eat me: as a garnish for soup or mix chopped avocadoes, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, lime juice and seasonings for a rich tasting guacamole. Spread ripe avocadoes on bread as a healthy replacement for mayonnaise. I have included some delicious recipes for you to enjoy. Have the most incredible spring and try to eat healthy! Adam Avocado

This article is brought to you by Margery Weatherby, who has been a health consultant and iridologist for over 30 years, helping many people with herbs and detoxing.

SO YOU DON’T THINK YOU NEED SUPPLEMENTS, EH?

Despite our health care system, and the many advances in our understanding of nutrition, the health of the general populace continues to decline. have more cancer, diabetes, heart problems, etc. than ever before.

Getting adequate daily nutrition is one of the best ways to maintain good health and stay clear of future problems. We all know that to sustain life, we need water, protein, carbohydrates, and fats, to supply energy and build tissue. Vitamins and minerals are needed to regulate all bodily processes. We all know the basics .... eat your vegetables, cut down on fats and sweets, and drink plenty of water. Eating a well-balanced diet is the first step to meeting your daily nutritional requirements. Despite our best intentions, few of us actually manage to eat a well-balanced diet for a variety of reasons. Plus, many of our foods today, are over processed and lacking in nutrients, and it has become very difficult to sustain the mineral, vitamin, and protein needs in most people through diet alone. The end result is often illness, related to calcium, potassium, iron and other “mineral” deficiencies. These deficiencies are “out of balance” body chemistry (too acidic or too alkaline), soft or brittle bones, tooth problems, off-kilter metabolism (too slow or too fast), arthritis, and pre-mature aging. Most of us get our vitamins, but how about the minerals? Question is, can I buy “cheap” vitamins and minerals. NO!!! ... for goodness sakes, NO!!!! Why do you think they are cheap? Because they don’t work, that’s why!!!! The quality is just not there. It’s the potency of the vitamins and minerals that count. My husband goes to the sewage treatment plant for his job occasionally, and he says he will take you on a tour if you want to come. Most “cheap” supplements, don’t dissolve in your body .... you can see them FLOATING on top of the sewage! Come and take the tour if you are a non-believer! Cheap out on other things, never your health! If you still don’t believe that taking care of your health is important, go to the hospital to “continuous care” and see the people who are there. Is this what you want? Do you still think it won’t happen to you? There’s a song that says .... “Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think!” The only way you are going to enjoy yourself, is if you take in knowledge. As a Health Practioner, I have seen people not buying quality supplements because they are too cheap to spend their money on health preventative! Look around you!!!! Just stop and think for a minute. Your possessions will disappear as time goes on, but if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything! There is nothing more rewarding than seeing a 80 or 90 year old person that still has a “sparkle in their eyes” and “spring in their step”. Let them tell you about the things that have happened to them. I want to be one of them ... enjoying life to the last day not diseased as some others are. There is nothing better than spending your money on health prevention. DO IT TODAY, don’t think health problems will pass you by. The best supplement I have found to date, is called “THE TRIO”. The Trio is a daily program that helps you maintain your body health and vital nutrition, with vitamins, minerals and the Omega-3. Your minerals can be the most important, plus your Omega-3. If you are getting a low dosage of these in your supplements now, CHANGE! In THE TRIO, it has Vitamin A, C, D, E, B1, B2, B6, folic acid, B12, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, calcium, phosphorous, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper, manganese, chromium, potassium, plus herbs, like alfalfa, asparagus stems, broccoli flowers, cabbage leaves, lemon bioflavonoids, rutin, rose hips, kelp leaves and stems, plus lutein. Now is this a complete range of product or not??? Look into taking care of yourself, because nobody else will! If you are serious about your health, START TODAY! I have dedicated my life to looking after people. I hope I have helped you, by letting you know about supplements today. For further info, please call Margery at (403) 901-0160. Page 48

We Challenge You to be the Judge Take the Four-Week ‘Look Good, Feel Great!’ Challenge to discover how moderate UV tanning can make you feel good from the inside out! If you have always wanted to try the indoor tanning experience but are unsure if it is right for you . . . this is the perfect opportunity. Sign up for our special ‘Look Good, Feel Great!’ Challenge Package that allows you to try UV tanning for 1-3 days per week for four weeks. Participating in this challenge will show you first-hand how tanning can help you Look Good, and Feel Great! TAN HERE FOR 1-3 DAYS PER WEEK FOR 4 WEEKS!

The Four-Week Challenge can benefit your lifestyle. A tan enhances muscle definition and will give you a golden glow. Many women also enjoy not having to wear or buy as much cosmetic make-up as a tan also enhances overall skin tone. You get to be the judge. Tanning bed lamps emit UVB light which produces Vitamin D in your skin. Everyone should have their Vitamin D levels checked regularly and try to maintain optimized levels. A tanning session can produce 10,000-20,000 IU of Vitamin D in your body. Ask your doctor for the simple blood test to check your Vitamin D levels. Studies show that maintaining an optimum level of vitamin D has many benefits. For more information go to - www. TanCanada.org, www.vitaminDsociety.org, www.vitaminDcouncil.org, www.grassrootshealth.net. Our Four-Week Challenge will run during the month of June, and your registration package will provide everything you need to get started. We will help you track your progress on the report card and will post photos of you before and after to monitor color results. The promotion also includes prize packages, tips and give-aways. All you need to do is come in for a tan every 1-3 days and feel the difference for yourself! Stop by our location in the Country Lane Mall, Strathmore or give us a call at 403-983-1803 to get registered and ready to start the challenge the first of June. Already a tanning client? You can get involved by referring friends or family members to try the challenge - we will reward you with a coupon for one week of FREE tanning for each referral who joins the challenge. Cheer on your referrals and help us mark their progress. You may have heard or seen recent media accounts that stated indoor tanning can become addictive for some; and this has made you unsure if you should try it. Be assured that there are as many different reasons to tan indoors as there are people who tan, but addiction is not one of them. As a professional tanning facility, we find this media account to be an insult to every one of our clients. Here are some facts to consider: • Humans are not addicted to UV exposure, we are attracted to it. By nature’s design, we are supposed to get regular UV exposure to be healthy. • To say anyone is addicted to UV is like saying they are addicted to air, food or water. We are naturally attracted to these things because we need them. www.thenewsyneighbor.com

• Vitamin D is now linked to lower risk of most cancers, heart disease and other disorders. The only way to achieve high enough vitamin D levels for this prevention is through regular UV exposure. • Not a single study anywhere in the world shows that UV exposure in a non-burning fashion is a significant factor for skin damage. All of which is to say that Mother Nature meant for us to get regular UV exposure and the vitamin D levels that are naturally attainable only through UV exposure, and that food and diet are unnatural surrogates at best for ‘The Sunshine Vitamin.’ Getting a tan is a natural result of that intended behavior. We help you to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of regular UV exposure. Keep in mind that billions of dollars are made telling you to avoid the sun – much more than will ever be made by the small businesses who offer professional indoor tanning services. Enjoy your sunshine — from any source — in intelligent moderation. We hope to see you in our Four-Week ‘Look Good, Feel Great!’ Challenge.

Water is not only important for our physical body, but it is also responsible for our thought process, feelings and moods. If we drink enough water, our body can eliminate toxins much quicker. The Newsy Neighbor

Tips for Mental Health 1. Build Confidence - Identify your abilities and weaknesses together, accept them build on them and do the best with what you have. 2. Eat right, Keep fit - A balanced diet, exercise and rest can help you to reduce stress and enjoy life. 3. Make Time for Family and Friends - These relationships need to be nurtured; if taken for granted they will not be there to share life’s joys and sorrows. 4. Give and Accept Support - Friends and family relationships thrive when they are “put to the test”. 5. Create a Meaningful Budget - Financial problems cause stress. Over-spending on our “wants” instead of our “needs” is often the culprit. 6. Volunteer - Being involved in community gives a sense of purpose and satisfaction that paid work cannot.

7. Manage Stress - We all have stressors in our lives but learning how to deal with them when they threaten to overwhelm us will maintain our mental health. 8. Find Strength in Numbers - Sharing a problem with others who have had similar experiences may help you find a solution and will make you feel less isolated. 9. Identify and Deal with Moods - We all need to find safe and constructive ways to express our feelings of anger, sadness and joy. 10. Learn to Be at Peace with Yourself - Get to know who you are, what makes you really happy, and learn to balance what you can and cannot change about yourself.

WITCH HAZEL

I remember years ago, watching my sister use witch hazel on her face as an astringent, I had forgotten all about it until I noticed a bottle of it at the Shoppers in Strathmore. It is very inexpensive and very good for your face. I have done a little research about this natural product and thought I would pass it on to you. Witch hazel is an astringent produced from the leaves and bark of the North American Witch Hazel shrub, which grows naturally all across Canada and the United States. It was widely used for medicinal purposes by American Indians. Witch hazel is used externally on sores, bruises, and swelling, Witch hazel hydrosol is used in skin care. It is a strong anti-oxidant and astringent, which makes it very useful in fighting acne. It is often used as a natural remedy for psoriasis, eczema, aftershave applications, ingrown nails, to prevent sweating of the face, cracked or blistered skin, for treating insect bites, poison ivy, and as a treatment for varicose veins and hemorrhoids. (It is found in numerous over-the-counter hemorrhoid preparations.) Witch hazel is also effective to soothe sunburn. Witch hazel is also commonly used in treatments for hemorrhoids as it is one of the few remedies that not only soothe but also shrink them. Witch hazel can be used instead of hair spray or other holding products when curling your hair and it’s probably better than the chemicals we are using now – I’m going to try it tomorrow and I’II let you know how it goes. So I have been using the Witch Hazel on my face as an astrigent after cleaning and before I put my night lotion on and I swear my skin is looking healthier. Try it for yourself. It’s my new beauty secret. By: KATHRYN HARTWELL

What is Quantum-Touch?

Quantum-Touch is a method of natural healing that works with the Life Force Energy (LFE) of the body to promote optimal wellness. Life Force Energy, also known as “chi” in Chinese and “prana” in Sanskrit, is the flow of energy that sustains all living beings. Quantum-Touch teaches us how to focus, amplify, and direct this energy, for a wide range of benefits with surprising and often extraordinary results. Quantum-Touch is an effective method for reducing back pain , realigning structure, balancing organs, glands and systems, reducing muscle aches, healing injuries, healing burns, and so much more. Quantum-Touch is easy enough to be learned by children, yet powerful enough to astound physicians, chiropractors, physical therapists, and a host of health professionals. One of the real joys of this work is that we truly don’t know the limits of what is possible. Your loving energy has tremendous impact to benefit those around you.

How Does Quantum-Touch Energy Healing Work?

Healing is a fascinating process which is generally very poorly understood. Although it may be tempting to believe that we can heal other people, it is of utmost importance to realize that all healing is self-healing. The body has an extraordinary intelligence and ability to heal itself. Given the right energetic, emotional, nutritional, and spiritual environments, the natural state of the body is perfect health. Our favorite definition of a healer is someone who was sick and got well; a great healer is someone who was very sick and got well quickly. Although all healing is self healing, we can assist other people heal with their own healing process. Quantum-Touch uses life-force energy to facilitate healing. Life-force energy is an effective tool for healing because of the principles of resonance and entrainment. In physics, entrainment theory is the process where two vibrating objects, vibrating at different speeds, start to vibrate at the same speed when energy is transferred between the two objects. Entrainment shows up in chemistry, nerology, biology, medicine, and more. For example, crickets will chirp in unison and fireflies will flash at the same time. Using the Quantum-Touch techniques, we can create a high Page 52

Our body is ALWAYS striving to maintain its natural balance. ~ To be ill means to lack physical balance, which means a lack of energy. ~ Processed food is dead food and robs the body of energy. ~ If the molecular structure of food is changed, the energy content is destroyed. frequency of life-force energy. If we place this field of high energy around an area of pain, stress, inflammation, or disease, the body can entrain to the higher frequency, thus amplifying the body’s ability to heal itself. Quantum-Touch actually provides healing energy for the practitioner as well as for the person seeking healing. Using the Quantum-Touch techniques, the practitioner can hold an extraordinarily high vibration; this high vibration not only influences the client, but also provides healing energy for the practitioner. Rather than becoming drained form doing healing work, the practitioner will most often feel emotionally uplifted as a result! We believe that serious research into life-force energy will inevitably transform our conception of physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, psychology and botany leading to an entire new branch of science. Including the concept of “consciousness” or Life-Force Energy in science will not only change the sciences forever, but even more importantly, our world will forever be different as people realize that their love has impact and their love has value. Professional practitioners of various modalities have told us that this work can be seamlessly combined with what they know, and in most cases it has transformed their practice. This list includes chiropractors, osteopaths, physical therapists, acupuncturists, cranial sacral therapists, chi gung instructors, and reiki masters, to name but a few. Lay people discover an elegant and profound hands-on healing method that they can effectively use. Testimonial:”Quantum-Touch has become integrated into my practice of surgery for breast cancer patients. Pain is reduced, scars heal faster, spasms relax, depression and fear turn to hope and healing, and patients are aware that they are loved as well as receiving quallity surgical care.” George R Webber, MD, FACS, Breast surgeon Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center, Knoxville, TN This article has been submitted by Roseanne deBeaudrap, RMT,CST2,EFT3 who has several levels of Quantum Touch training and incorporates this healing technique into each of her treatments. Best Deal in TOWN: One Sunday afternoon a couple sees an ad in the paper. They can’t believe their eyes. There is a house in the paper for $1000, in the nicest part of town. We are talking about a Highland Park mansion for $1000. They think this has to be a misprint, but decide to call anyway. They say to the lady who answers the phone; ‘we saw your ad, and know it must be a misprint.’ She tells them it’s not & that they are actually the first ones to call. They decide to go look at the house. They race over as fast as they can. They pull up to the most beautiful house on the block. In front of the house is a fountain that cost at least $30,000. They ring the door bell & the lady answers. She starts showing them the house. They realize this house is over 5000 sq ft and it is obvious that expense was not a problem in building this house. The house had marble imported from Italy & a chandelier imported from France. The landscaping was breath taking & the house had a great pool & a nice tennis court. The couple said to the lady, ‘This is the most beautiful house we have ever seen, what’s the catch?’ The lady assured the couple there was no catch. The couple wanted the house for $1,000 but were leery of doing the deal. Finally, the lady said, ‘You seem like a nice couple, so I’ll let you know the truth...’ She told them this house is completely paid for, and not a penny is owed against it. Well, last week she got a call from her husband. He informed her that he is leaving her for his secretary. He then told her she could have everything that they own as long as he could have the proceeds off the sale of the house. She agreed and he asked her if she could sell the house while he & his new girlfriend hung out in the Caribbean. HOUSE SOLD!!

When a real-estate agency hadn’t sold our house, we decided to do it ourselves. I placed ads in the local papers, spray painted a “For Sale” message on a sign board and posted it outside. When my husband came home that evening, he told me, laughing, that my sign was the most truthful one he had ever seen. Confused, I rushed outside to take a look. In my haste I had printed – “For Sale by Ower.”

Two by Fours

Some men in a pickup truck drove to a lumber yard. One of the men walked into the office and said, “We need some four-by-twos.” The clerk asked, “You mean two-by-fours, don’t you?” The man said, “I’ll go check,” and went back to the truck. He returned shortly and said, “Yeah, I meant twoby-fours.” “All right. How long do you need them?” The customer paused for a moment and said, “I’d better go check.” After a while, he returned to the office and said, “A long time… we’re gonna build a house!” www.thenewsyneighbor.com

Does hiring a Real Estate Agent SAVE you Money? By Brad Sage

Real estate agents charge fees; money that could otherwise be going into your pocket. At least that’s the common misconception amongst home sellers. But is that the reality of the situation? Do real estate agents really take up a large portion of your house sale price? Does a professional real estate agent really cost you that much? The first thing to acknowledge is that yes, a real estate agent is going to charge you a commission. However, their not getting something for nothing. In fact, when you realize what the real estate professional does, you’ll understand that although they does charge you a fee, you are not actually out of pocket. So what does a real estate agent do, and how do they earn their money? The first thing that a real estate agent brings to the table is an up-to-date working knowledge about houses in your area, what price they are currently selling for, and who’s buying them. This is invaluable because they know exactly the kind of target buyer who will be interested in taking a look at your home with a serious interest in buying it. This kind of buyer is often already qualified so that if they like what they see, you’re more likely to see the sale through to closure than if the buyer hasn’t even started trying to raise finance to buy a home. An experienced real estate professional will be able to advise you on what needs to be done to your home in order to sell it at the best selling price for your type of home in your area. It could be that his list is actually shorter than yours based on how much return you will get for investing time and money in repairs and updating such things as drapes. You may know your home better than they do, but they knows what sells, and their knowledge on how to place furniture in order to maximize natural light etc could make the difference between selling and not. Selling a house isn’t like going to the store, picking an item off the shelf and buying it. There a lot of legalities and paperwork to be covered before a closing a house sale. A real estate agent works with this paperwork on a daily basis. They know how to simplify things and get the official process taken care of as quickly as possible. They will negotiate on your behalf with the buyers, the financial people and the legal people so that all the ends are tied up neatly and you won’t have a legal case on your hands in the future because of a form that didn’t get filed, or a negotiation clause that was forgotten in the excitement. On the surface, it may seem that a real estate agent is there to take your money, but in actual fact, their experience and knowledge will help you speed up the process, and because of their negotiating skill, could put more money into your pocket than you pay into theirs. PM A school teacher started his first job 3/31/08 at a 4:07:41 primary school and was eager to make a good impression on the kids. So, when he noticed a boy standing all by himself during recess, while the other kids were playing a game of soccer, he walked up to him and asked “Are you alright?”

The boy assured him everything was fine and the teacher left it at that. A few minutes later, however, he noticed that the boy was still standing alone and had not joined the other boys. Deciding to find out what was wrong this time, the teacher approached him again and said, “ Hi, are you sure you’re not feeling left out? Would you like me to be your friend?” The boy obviously felt a little embarrassed, but after a little hesitation said, “Maybe”. Encouraged by his progress, the teacher asked, “Tell me, why are you standing here alone?” “Because”, the boy said with clear exasperation in his voice. “I am the goalie” www.thenewsyneighbor.com

A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, “What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you’re out of the office? “I give it to them, replied the lawyer, “and then I send them a bill. The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer.

A preacher woke up one Sunday morning and looked outside and saw it was a beautiful day. He decided to skip church and go play golf. So he called the junior pastor at his church and told him he was sick and couldn’t give the sermon. The junior pastor told him not to worry, he would deliver the sermon. The pastor drove about 40 miles away from town to avoid being spotted. As he was setting up his first drive on the first hole, Jesus leaned over to God in heaven and asked him, “Are You going to let him get away with this?” God told Jesus not to worry, he would handle it. Right as God said that, the preacher hit the drive of his life. The ball traveled all 450 feet to the green, bounced once, and rolled in the hole. The preacher was ecstatic. Jesus asked God,”Why would you let him do that?” God said, “Because, who is he gonna tell?”
