Top 10 Reasons to Shop Local “Going local does not mean walling off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses which use local resources sustainably, employ local workers at decent wages and serve primarily local consumers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves from the boardrooms of distant corporations and back into the community where it belongs.” – Michael H. Shuman, author of the book Going Local.

1. Local Economic Stimulus. When you purchase at locally owned businesses rather than nationally owned, more money is kept in the community because locally-owned businesses often purchase from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Purchasing local helps grow other businesses as well as the local tax base. 2. Non-Profits Receive Greater Support. Local business owners donate more to local charities than non-local owners. 3. Unique Businesses Create Character & Prosperity. The unique character of your local community is defined in large part by the business that reside The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

there, and that plays a big factor in your overall satisfaction with where you live and the value of your home and property. 4. Environmental Impact Is Reduced. Small local business usually set up shop in the town/village centre, providing a centralized variety that is much friendlier to a community’s walk score than out of town shopping malls. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss and pollution. 5. Most New Jobs Are Provided by Local Businesses. Small local businesses are the largest employers nationally. Plus, the more jobs you have in your local community, the less people are going to have to commute which means more time and less traffic and pollution. 6. Customer Service Is Better. Local businesses often hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service. You are also going to see these people around town and they are less likely to blow you off or be rude because they have to face you day after day. 7. Local Business Owners Invest in Community. Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s welfare and future. 8. Public Benefits Far Outweigh Public Costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure and more efficiently utilize public services relative to chain stores. 9. Competition and Diversity Leads to More Consumer Choices. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. 10. You Matter More. We talk a lot about exerting influence with your purchasing choices, or “voting with your wallet.” It’s a fact that businesses respond to their customers but your values and desires are much more influential to your local community business than the large big box stores. “Think globally, act locally.”

Wine Tasting: What's in a Grape? by M.J. Elliott When you enjoy a glass of wine, you're tasting the end result of a complex process, with a lot of different factors involved in creating that final product. The soil and altitude of the vineyard, the fermentation techniques used and whether or not the wine is oaked are just some of the variables that play their part, but it all starts with grapes. If you're learning to taste and appreciate wine to its fullest, discovering the effects of different grapes is a great place to start understanding how all the processes involved work together. Here are some of the more common grapes, and the sorts of flavours you can expect them to bring to your glass.

White wine grapes Chardonnay - One of the most popular white grapes and arguably the best known, chardonnay provides flavours of citrus and tropical fruit. Its delicate taste can vary dramatically depending on the methods used by the producer, but expect a refreshing off-dry wine with plenty of body. Sauvignon Blanc - Sauvignon blanc tends to add green, grassy, herbal overtones to a wine. Often less complex than a good chardonnay, sauvignon blanc can still compare in terms of quality if it's handled well. Riesling - The most widely grown grape in Germany, riesling can vary from sweet to very dry, depending on how it's grown and processed. Dry wines made with riesling typically have floral and citrus fruit flavours, while the sweeter ones tend towards stone fruits and honey. Pinot grigio - Also known as pinot gris, depending on where it's grown, this grape produces a dry, zesty, floral wine with a light body that makes excellent summer drinking.

Red Wine Grapes Cabernet Sauvignon - This widely-used and incredibly popular fruit is considered by some to be the finest of the red wine grapes. It has an excellent balance, with medium sweetness, and typically has dark stone fruits and berries, sometimes with a touch of spice. Merlot - Often on the sweeter side of medium, merlot wines are produced and enjoyed throughout the world. Its berry and fruit flavours are not a million miles away from cabernet sauvignon, but its easy-drinking style has made it one of the more popular grapes. Shiraz/Syrah - Shiraz wines are full-bodied, with deep, complex flavours of spices and dark berries. Look out for hints of liquorice and black pepper and a touch of fresh-cut grass on the nose. This can be one to really test your tasting skills, as you may be able to pick out quite a range of flavours. Tempranillo - Mainly grown in Spain, tempranillo grapes make a rich, bold, fruity wine with a measure of cinnamon thrown into the mix. It's high in tannins and often has a distinct earthy undertone. Now you have an overview of the typical characteristics of some popular grapes, you can experiment with tasting. First of all, try a selection of wines based on different grapes and see if you can pick out the types of flavours mentioned here.

we visit. The one that checks on the girls and kisses them every night before I go to bed. The one that puts her children first, sometimes to the detriment of herself. Gone are the party days, the sleeping in, and the shopping on weekends just for fun…replaced with potty training, never ending laundry, and well… little to no sleep. But I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Those little girls with joyful hearts and spirits are more important than the air I breathe, and I am supremely lucky to hold the title mom. I often ask athletes and celebs during interviews what has surprised them the most about parenthood – and when they turn the question back on me, I always say how much it’s changed me. I am a work in progress, but I am most certainly a different person than I was before I embarked on our infertility journey over thirteen years ago.

10 WAYS MOTHERHOOD HAS CHANGED ME As I was stood watching the parade at the Magic Kingdom, my eyes teared up and my heart swelled as I saw their sweet smiling faces and hands waving at the characters. They were so full of joy as Merida, Rapunzel, Tinker Bell, Elsa, Snow White, and all of their favourite princesses waltzed by. They were in awe just as I was, completely dazed as I marveled that I actually have children, two of them, both miracles and both the center of my world. It’s hard to believe it’s been over six years since I became a mother. Something I never even wanted as a teen and then what I immediately craved right after I was married. Though I always dreamed of a successful career, boy did that biological clock tick loudly. But who knew the trek to motherhood would be almost impossible, and the conception and deliveries so incredibly difficult? But now that I’m here, a veteran of the baby years and a newbie to big-kid-land, I’m shocked at the person I’ve become. You know, the one that cries at Disneyland when

Attention BRIDES to be!

10 WAYS MOTHERHOOD HAS CHANGED ME

1. I finally understand what patience means, and though I’m still impatient by nature, I now know how to count to ten and breathe before I react. (Well… some of the time.) 2. My career is on a totally different trajectory and I’ve accepted it, and am happily walking down my new path. 3. Going with the flow has taken on a whole new meaning. Nothing goes according to plan in this new life, and expecting the unexpected is crucial for our sanity. 4. Perfectionism is not allowed in the mom-world, learning to be OK with less than perfect is beyond hard…but so utterly necessary. 5. Supermom is a myth. Thank goodness I learned the truth and she doesn’t need to exist! 6. Sleep is no longer a necessity, but a gift. 7. Guilt exists. Enough said. 8. Pony tails are the mark of a successful morning. It means you actually had time to get ready. 9. Coffee is my new best friend. So is wine. 10. Most importantly, our children are our mirrors, and they make me want to be a better person every single day. Less judging, more positivity, a healthy self image…it’s amazing to me how much we grow into ourselves once we have children. Parenting has given me a greater purpose and is the most important job of all. Children are our sponges, and we need to fill them with love, light, and positive examples, even if it means really examining our own lives and bettering ourselves in the process. Some may say I’m boring, and need to get out more – but I think I’m exactly where I’m meant to be. Muddling through this motherhood journey and sharing little pieces I learn along the way. Celebrating

Okay, so to write a column on Mother's Day, I find it very challenging as my mother has never been a big part my life and I don't mind sharing that, as I know I'm not the only person who this has happened to. You see, my mother was not a mother to me, but that's okay – I have learned a lot because of that; as I vowed I would never turn out like her and I didn't and I'm very proud of myself for that. You may be wondering why I'm sharing such a personal thing about myself. It's not that personal, it's real and this happens every day and I want to let people know that just because your birth mom is not in your life does not mean you cannot learn from other people's positive ways and celebrate Mother’s Day! I've never had my mother help raise me, but I've been influenced by amazing women; my grandmother being one, my mother-in-law, my best friend's mom (Doreen), all wonderful women to guide me through my journey of life to help mould me to the way I am today and what I’ve done was looked for great qualities in these women. Not to toot my own horn, but I am a loving mom and grandmother and loving to my husband as well so what I had done was change the negative cycle that usually happens. So, Mother’s Day to me is a day to celebrate all the wonderful women that helped mould me into a strong, kind, positive, respectable and – most of all – loving person. I want to say thank you to all the wonderful women that have entered into my life and let me see the positivity in you that I can bring to the women in my life. Happy Mother’s Day!!! Connie Greene

THE CHRONICLES OF LARRY AND ROGER:

A Pair of Diabetic Feet

Written by: Vicki L Myhre CPOD (I) CMP PFRP. Enlightened Soles. Internationally Certified Podologist. Registered through the Canadian Examining. Board of Health Practitioners

Hello to all, and Happy Spring! Larry here. Happy Mother’s Day to all of you amazing Moms, and Stepmoms, and Grand Moms and Foster Moms, and all the other Moms out there… It is a special and well-deserved celebration. We are hoping that your Easter was as amazing as ours was. The family gathering was awesome, the weather was terrific, the Easter Bunny did not disappoint and the turkey was outstanding. Can it get better than that? We don’t think so. Roger was surfing the internet, as he usually is, and he was looking for gift ideas for Diabetic Moms, knowing that Mother’s Day was quickly approaching. Then… the most amazing thing happened. He found a website that had a list of things to buy a MOM OF A DIABETIC CHILD. How amazing is this?! All diabetics, caregivers, and family members know how hard it is to be Diabetic. Let’s bring some recognition and help for the Mamas of Young Type 1 Diabetic Children. Many, if not most moms of kids with diabetes, are exhausted from the constant stress of dealing with blood sugars, the sleepless nights, having to be a “nurse, doctor, and more” for her child, and all the rest that goes with caring for a child with diabetes. So, we found this amazing list, thank you to Sylvia White https://parentingdiabetes.com/type1diabetesbasics/best-gifts-moms-kids-diabetes/ for this really amazing list of things to buy a Mom of a Diabetic Child for Mothers Day.

COFFEE, STARBUCK’S CARDS, AND CUTE MUGS WERE A PRIORITY…. Here’s a list of other items suggested: • Gift basket with spa day stuff • Spa day gift card • Babysitter and a day away! • Movie tickets and a babysitter • Homemade sugar scrubs, nail polish, and other pampering day essentials • A label maker or gift card to a label making store (thought that was a great idea!) • Journal, pretty pen, in a nice basket. • Old movies for when they are staying up late at night to re-check blood sugars • Cute t-shirts or sweatshirts about diabetes • Cute decals about type 1 diabetes for awareness • List of local and national support groups, including Facebook • A promise to learn to care for their child and vouchers for overnight care for a night away • A headlamp or small flashlight for those middle of the night blood sugar checks • Night cream LOL, for those undereye circles from lack of sleep! • A cute bag for holding all the extra gear • and the best one on the list… a CURE! How truly amazing was that list, gang?!! We loved it so much. Roger and I feel that most Moms would appreciate these gifts, especially those moms with special needs chickadees that demand extra time and unintentionally create exhaustion. We really felt this list was invaluable for a Mother’s Day appreciation crew. Use it and enjoy it. To all you Mamas out there, GOD BLESS YOU! You are amazing. We look forward to chatting with you again next month. Father’s Day is coming up. Until then, enjoy the sun and gardens and flowers and birds and all that Spring brings to you at your end of the world. Until Next month, Make your Footprints Count. Larry and Roger

A Mom’s Love2

“A mother is the one who is still there when everyone else has deserted you.” ~Author Unknown

When I ask my friends what makes their moms so special, they use words like kind and gentle, caring and selfless, trusting and loving, wise and strong, resilient and inspiring, and hard-working and devoted. There are many words in addition to these that people use to describe their mothers, but one common theme that I hear when listening to someone speak lovingly about their mom is that the mom has been an endless source of love and support during the darkest times. As a mother of four now-grown children, there were several years of dark times with one of my children. Years that brought frustration, confusion and pain that went beyond what I expected to experience as a parent. Times that involved police repeatedly being at our home, visits to the police station, fears about my child’s safety, late night trips to the emergency room, lots of tears, a school system that was ready to give up on him, and so much more. I was advised to have tough love, to accept the inevitable fate of my troubled teen and to let him experience the consequences of their actions. Yet, the Mother in me refused to give up and as a result, he began to make new choices, he had different experiences and most importantly, he survived his teenage years a much stronger and wiser person than he was when he entered that time of his life. My best friend had over 20 dark years as an alcoholic and drug addict. His life spiraled down over the years and he speaks of the devastating heartbreak he caused his family, especially his mom. He talks of how his friends no longer wanted him around and he was unable to maintain a job.

And yet, in the darkest of his darkest hours, when he had lost the ability to choose between living and dying, it was his parents who came to his side. It was his mom who tirelessly tended to him during his first few days of intense, non-medicated detoxing. It was his mom who flew to another province with him where he entered a treatment facility and he finally left his addictions behind for good. These are just two examples of the power of a mother’s love. A love that is never-ending. A love that believes in a positive outcome. A love that is the light in the darkest of times. It is the love that makes a difference in the life of a child. At Women Talk Strathmore, the Talkers each month share their own stories and speak about how love and support made a difference in their lives. It may have been the love and support of a friend, a stranger, a family member, and at times, it is the love and support that they gave to themselves. Each story is a powerful reminder of the power of unconditional love, the same kind of love that a mother carries in her heart. This type of love is part of the Women Talk experience. No matter what the story, the circumstance or the message that is shared, the room is filled with appreciation for each woman who is present. It is a welcoming, inspiring and fun place to be, and all women are invited to be a part of this community of love and support. Women Talk Strathmore is on the third Thursday of the month at The Station. NATURAL OILS THAT PROTECT YOU FROM THE SUN Macadamia Oil – Macadamia is known

as the “the king of nuts” and its oil is known to have almost the same properties as sebum. Sebum is the oil produced by our sebaceous glands to protect the skin from dryness and in a way makes skin and hair waterproof. Notice that water does not readily pass through the pores of our skin even as we get wet. It has been tested as having high-absorption rate when applied externally to provide protection against sunburn. As a sunscreen ingredient it has an SPF rating of 6. Hemp Seed Oil – The oil extracted from hemp seed is said to closely resemble the body’s natural lipids. Lipids refer to molecular compounds considered important for cell growth due to their large carbon and hydrogen content. Lipids do not easily mix with water because their properties are more related to fat substances, although not all lipids

are fats. As sunscreen protection, it is easily absorbed by the skin to provide the essential fatty and essential Amino acids as well as other nutrients. All these are needed for proper keratin formation in the skin, teeth, nails and hair as a major protein component. Due to this, hemp seed oil has an SPF rating of 6. Sesame Seed Oil- Sesame seed oil is said to be composed of 20% protein and 50% lipids which gives the gamma tocopherol (Vitamin E) content. Tocopherol provides stable anti-oxidative mechanisms which include eliminating free radicals. UVR rays are said to be capable of activating the release of free radicals in skin cells. The characteristic of being stable means they do not easily breakdown under the sun’s UVR or when kept in storage. As a sunscreen ingredient, it has an SPF rating of 4. Grapeseed Oil- This oil is said to be rich in oligometric proanthrocyanidins or OPC. These are like the sesame seed oil components which hunt down free radicals that cause aging, with the purpose of eliminating them from the body system. Studies show that the OPC in grapeseed is twenty times more effective than vitamin C in eradicating free radicals in its function as an antioxidant. The antioxidating capabilities also promote the self-repair process of cells, which is important when the skin becomes affected by the sun’s UVR rays. The SPF rating for this oil as a sunscreen ingredient is 4. Avocado Oil – This fruit is highly regarded by the Aztecs of Mexico for its high nutritional content. Avocado oil is rich in vitamins A, B, D and E, fatty acids and lecithin. Avocado oil has quick-acting capacity to be absorbed by the skin tissue and provides the skin with emollients that can hydrate, nourish and regenerate the epidermis or the outer skin layer. Avocado oil has an SPF rating of 4 as a sunscreen ingredient. Coconut Oil – This oil is abundant in tropical countries and is also known as coconut butter when it assumes solid form at room temperature. Oil extract is called virgin coconut oil if it was derived from the dried meat of the coconut fruit. Coconut oil is clear but rich in fatty acids and moisturizing elements that give it anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. It is ideal as a sunscreen agent because of its highly stable characteristics under any condition and capability for an indefinite shelf-life during storage. However, as oil that provides natural sun protection, it only garnered an SPF rating of 2.

to other opinions, a tone that represents calmness, and accurately embodies the topic. Compared to destructive communication involving condescending terminology, unwavering statements, tones that are angry or unnaturally loud deep or high pitched.

The communication in a partnership does not need to be destructive to benefit from change. Good can always be better. For example, a good rule of thumb when making requests is to use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, as they make a request feel much less demanding. Following are four key techniques that can easily be incorporated into your relationship, to better all types of communication. Included in each technique is an example of how to change a conversation from good to better when discussing going out for dinner. 1) Moving from using Closed-ended questions to incorporating Open-ended questions. Closed questions only require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. For example, “Do you want to go for dinner?” can be changed to an open-ended question that requires a more detailed and ‘meaty’ answer, like “What type of dinner would you like tonight?”. 2) Active listening. Being willing to listen to the full answer to the question allows you to show attention and care towards the speaker. For example, “I would like to go out for dinner…” pause, instead of jumping in with another question, wait five seconds and gauge the body language of the speaker, often there will be a continuation such as “but I am worried about finances” or “how about trying the new steakhouse?”. Waiting allows the speaker to gather their thoughts, and ensures the listener has all the immediate pertinent information before they respond.

Dr. Sean Stordy Dr. Anwar Hamdon Dr. Don Montgomery Raemy Jung, RMT Jessica Chatwin, RMT Burhan Imamwerdi, RMT Taylor Stewart, RMT Tiffany Mitchell, Provisional Psychologist

#9 – 55 Wheatland Trail Strathmore, AB

3) Being open to other opinions. In dual conversations there are often opinions or choices that are different from your own. Instead of getting frustrated or speaking louder to ensure your opinion holds true. Ask questions that encourage elaboration and discussion allowing for compromise. For example, “I’m not sure I’m in the mood for steak, how about we try the Mongolian place instead?” In doing this, you are acknowledging the other person, while still including your thoughts and allowing them the chance to counter. 4) Finally, it’s easy to discuss choices on what to do, or things that need to be done; work, kids, house repairs. But what do you talk about when those ‘easy’ items become all the conversations? How do you broaden your discussions? There are a lot of easy conversation starters that include easy to difficult questions on the internet. A google search would be ‘relationship conversation starters.’ These random lists of questions are great to help you get to know new and old things about your partner. For example, while out for dinner “What was your favourite movie as a child? Why?” Or for a more in-depth relationship question “Where would you like to see us in 5 or 10 years?” These are four easy techniques to incorporate to help move conversations from good to better. They are helpful to avoid falling into destructive traps, that involve angry and closed off tones and condescending language. Communication does not have to be scary or boring within a relationship. It can be fun andexciting and help deepen an emotional connection and encourage further understanding and knowledge about your partner. Club Soda: Not only useful for getting out stains, it can also help with an upset stomach or dehydration. Because it is free of the sugar and additives of regular sodas, you can get the benefits without the negatives. Chocolate Milk: Often thought of as more of an indulgence than healthy remedy, there are actually benefits to your childhood favourite. When drank after a rough workout, chocolate milk can actually be very useful as a recovery drink.

Avocado: Often

used as a main ingredient in face masks, the oils in avocados contain high levels of Vitamin E that are essential for healthy skin. Simply grab one, puree it, spread on your face, and leave for 20 to 30 minutes.

Toothpaste: Not just for a healthy smile, it can also be used as a spot treatment for acne. As soon as you feel a growth coming, apply toothpaste to the effected spot. If you feel it tingling, that means its working. Do not use as an overnight treatment. Eggs: The protein found in eggs can be used to restore the strength of your hair. Simply mix one egg and one or two oils rich in moisturizing fats like coconut or sesame, apply to the hair, and wrap. Ashes: Got a wart? Then grab some cool ashes from the fireplace to treat it naturally. Banana Peel: Wrap one of these around a wart to help dissolve it. However, the time it takes to work – weeks to months – can have even the reasonably patient driving to the pharmacy. Castor Oil: Use this on both your skin and hair for optimal results. The oil can also help with constipation, menstrual disorders, and more. Oatmeal: Not just a healthy breakfast, the beta glucan in real oatmeal can help your skin. Use a washcloth wrapped with oatmeal and rung into a sink to splash on your face for amazing results. Healthy Fruit Remedies That Are Right in Your Home

Acai Berry: Long before Oprah was touting its benefits,

Acai berries were well known for their antioxidant content. These can help with free radicals, disease, and are often found in juice or granola. Watermelon: Containing high levels of glutathione, the pulp in water melon is another powerful antioxidant. Because it is made up of so much water, it can also help with dehydration. Grapefruit: The amount of Vitamin C alone found in this fruit is reason to eat it. However, it also contains flavonoids and other nutrients. But this fruit can also be bad for you if drenched in sweeteners.

Cherries: If you have arthritis or any kind of joint

problem, cherries are sweeter than you think. The Arthritis Foundation recommends drinking tart cherry juice mixed with water three times a day for its anti-inflammatory properties. Orange: Not just a high boaster of Vitamin C, oranges also have other uses. In fact, the peel of an orange can be rubbed against rough or dead skin as a healthy remedy. Apples: It’s true that this fruit actually does keep the doctor away. Conditions it can help include prevention of cancer and Alzheimer’s, along with diabetes and cholesterol management. Berries: Both raspberries and blueberries contain high levels of antioxidants and other nutrients that can help a number of conditions. Like many other brightly colored fruits, they contain the cancer fighting substance flavonoids. Papaya: This fruit’s high levels of Vitamin C, E, and others help it combat a number of ailments. Anyone looking to combat a cold or cancer should reach for this.

Traditional, white, red, and even Chinese are all good sources of the preceding. Wheat Germ: It contains both zinc and antioxidants to help fight infection, in addition to Vitamin B. Hate the taste? Then switch out part of the flour in a recipe to sneak in a little wheat germ. Spinach: Good for more than sailing cartoon characters, the folate in spinach helps cell production. It also contains fiber and Vitamin C for extra help. Broccoli: Much like the above, even if you don’t like the taste of this vegetable, you’ll enjoy it more than having a compromised immune system. Full of Vitamins A, C, and D, it can help with a variety of ailments, including infection. Sweet Potato: Switch out your baked or mashed potatoes for one of these to take advantage of the immune helping beta-carotene. They are also lower in carbs and contain high levels of Vitamin A for eye health. Salt Water: Got a stuffy nose? Then help your immune system out by flushing your nose with salt water and removing virus particles. WebMD recommends mixing one quarter teaspoon salt, one quarter teaspoon baking soda, and eight ounces of warm water. Simply flush a few times with a bulb syringe to get results. Oregano: Did you know that one teaspoon of this spice

has as much antioxidants as three cups of broccoli? Simply add a little to pizza, pastas, sandwiches, and more to experience its benefits. Dried Red Peppers: These can include cayenne, paprika, and others. The spices help stimulate digestion and burn fat. Rosemary: This small green spice has been shown to help in heart health. It also helps reduce inflammation that can trigger many diseases. Thyme: Similar to oregano, this spice is also high in antioxidants. Studies are also looking into its benefits against respiratory functions. Curry: Have heart problems? Then you might have the remedy in your home’s spice rack. Made from turmeric, it contains many of the same benefits, along with help against heart disease.

However, the zinc found in oysters can help stave of the flu, heal wounds, and yes, increase male fertility. Wine: The polyphenols found in wine actually can act as an antibacterial agent. They can help with everything from flu to diarrhea. Drinking more than one glass of red or white wine, however, can do more harm than good. I love treats. I don’t hide that fact. My entire world revolves around treat, walks, and Yampa. If I could live at Yampa’s house, go for walks and eat treats all day, I would be the The Happiest Puppy, instead of the Pouty Puppy. But, alas, I’m stuck in this house with two sticky-handed monsters and a puppy who likes to snuggle with me (and I do NOT like that!). Sometimes, treats don’t mix well with my stomach. Mom thinks I’m allergic to chicken, which is ridiculous since I will literally eat anything. Bunny poop? Yum. Rotten apple from under the couch? Yum. Whatever is stuck in my paw? Yum. But, unfortunately, my love for these things DOES sometimes cause ill effects, like an ouchy tummy at 2am. Mom and dad started putting a gate at the base of the stairs to keep the puppy from chewing everything upstairs, and then they started keeping it up at night so I wouldn’t wake them up with my huffing and puffing at al hours of the night (sometimes, I just like to walk into their room in the middle of the night, make loud noises, then walk back downstairs like it’s no big deal. I like to remind them how unhappy I am with my life, and 2am huffing is the best way to do this). So, when my tummy hurts at 2am from some random thing I ate, and I can’t get upstairs to tell them about it, what’s the next best thing? Pooping on the floor. Yup, you read that right. It’s just one of my many great qualities – revengefulness. It’s word; look it up. Sometimes I poop on the carpet, sometimes I poop on the hardwood, sometimes I leave little nuggets here and there so they feel safe and accidentally step in it. Those are my favourites. I call them “stink bombs.” May your May be filled with bunny poop and stink bombs. Sincerely, Bauer.

How Coloured Crayons for Kids Were Invented

You can buy a box of Crayola® crayons in 152 colors today, but way back in 1903, they only came in eight colors. And that first-ever box of Crayola® brand crayons was a huge improvement over the first crayons ever sold, which only came in black. Wax crayons were mostly used for industrial purposes until cousins Edwin Binney and Harold Smith introduced their brightly colored crayons for kids. Edwin’s wife, Alice, made up the name Crayola® by combining “craie” (French for chalk) with “oleaginous” (which means oily). In other words, oily chalk! It’s hard to understand just how different modern crayons are from their ancestors without a look at the history of the crayon. In 1864 Edwin’s dad, Joseph Binney, started the Peekskill Chemical Works in upstate New York. The firm made charcoal and lamp black, a black pigment made from the soot left over when oil is burnt. When the two cousins took over in 1885, they started making new things, like a red pigment for barn paints and a carbon black that made rubber tires stronger. They made a number of industrial products, but from 1900 to 1902, they started making pencils and dustless chalk for school blackboards. Colored crayons were a natural next step. But the original pigments they had used were not safe for kids, so they developed crayons that would be safe if swallowed. The first box they sold — the one with eight colors — cost just one nickel. Over the years, as the company has grown, it has introduced more than 400 different colors. Nowadays, plenty of other companies make colored crayons for children too. www.kidsdiscover.com facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

ASK THE VET! Can Pets Be Gluten-Free? Before reading ahead (where you will discover many truths about gluten), I want you to take a few moments to think about what exactly gluten is. I’m not asking you to think about what foods contain gluten. I’m also not asking you to think about what symptoms are caused in some people when they eat gluten. I just want to know, what the heck is gluten?

Your pet will always be treated like a part of our family at the Animal Care Centre of Strathmore We have recommendations, training information, and handouts that will help you and your pet. We provide ultimate care in a safe, comfortable environment; catered to your pet’s specific needs including: › Annual Health Examinations › Vaccination Appointments › Behavior Consultations › Isolation ward › Breeder puppy vaccinations › Travel documents › Pediatric patient exams › Geriatric patient exams › Insurance › Referrals

So, what the heck is gluten?

and gluten-free crusts).4

What about corn? Does it have gluten?

Right now, the gold standard for diagnosing Celiac disease is to take biopsies of the small intestine.1,3 I’ll be honest, when my own biopsies came back negative, I was beyond relieved. I was relieved to the point that I began confessing my love for gluten to my doctor. . . actually all things made with gluten (mmmmm pizza crust). This also meant I did not have to replace everything in my kitchen that had been exposed to gluten countless times (major cross-contamination!).

Gluten is a fancy word for protein coming from grains like wheat, barley, and rye. You heard that right! It’s protein. In fact, gluten is made up of two smaller proteins named gliadin and glutenin.1 It’s actually the gliadin that appears to be the culprit that causes so much trouble for people with Celiac disease. You will come across many reputable human medical websites listing corn as a “gluten-free” food. To the contrary, pet food ingredient lists will refer to the protein coming from corn as “corn gluten meal”. Confusing, I know! Let me break it down for you. The protein in corn is not the same as the gluten found in wheat, barley, and rye.2 So people with Celiac disease are free to enjoy corn on the cob! Fun fact: Corn gluten meal in pet food is a great source of nutrition because it contains amino acids that are required by both dogs and cats (e.g. methionine and leucine).

Why do some people need to avoid gluten like it’s the plague?

When people diagnosed with Celiac disease ingest even the tiniest amount of gluten (e.g. a crumb left on the butter dish after using a knife, baked on flour in the corners of muffin tins, teeny crumbs left in the toaster oven, etc.) this causes inflammation in their gut and has disastrous consequences. The gut, specifically the small intestine, becomes damaged and unable to properly absorb nutrients from food, including vitamins and minerals.5 As a result, people with untreated Celiac disease commonly have chronic diarrhea, anemia, weight loss, fatigue, and other autoimmune diseases.

Is there a cure for people with Celiac disease? There is no cure.1 The only treatment for people with Celiac disease is to avoid gluten for the rest of their lives, which is much easier said than done! Want to know how incredibly challenging it is to avoid gluten? Gluten can even be found in medications and supplements. Also, foods that do not normally contain gluten, can become cross-contaminated with gluten (e.g. a pizzeria using the same pans for wheat-based

How is Celiac disease diagnosed in people?

A word of empathy:

Celiac disease is a really crappy autoimmune disease and I empathize with anyone dealing with it! I can also completely understand not wanting to have a gluten-containing pet food in your home as this would increase your risk of exposure. Unfortunately, cross-contamination also occurs in pet foods during ingredient storage and the manufacturing process. This means that foods that do not contain gluten sources on the ingredient list may actually have traces of gluten if they were made in the same machines as foods containing wheat, barley, and/or rye.

Important Point:

Over the counter foods that say “no wheat” or “gluten-free” could be cross-contaminated with gluten. My resident-mate conducted a very small study on over-thecounter pet foods with “no soy” claims and 75% of the diets contained soy proteins. In fact, two of the diets were over the highest limit of detection! She speculated this was due to accidental cross-contamination and that the soy proteins were not added on purpose to these “no soy” diets. In my opinion, the only way to ensure a pet food does not contain gluten and does not become cross-contaminated with gluten is to: • Feed a veterinary therapeutic diet: 1. Intended to treat food allergic pets (e.g. a hydrolyzed protein diet), AND facebook.com/TheNewsyNeighbour

• 35

2. Does not have wheat, barley, and/or rye on the ingredient list, AND 3. Hand washing occurs prior to feeding (i.e. you ate whole wheat toast prior to feeding your pet breakfast so you must wash your hands thoroughly), AND 4. Food is stored in the original package (i.e. not dumped into a plastic container with residues from prior pet foods), AND 5. New metal bowls and metal scoops are purchased when starting the food (i.e. old plastic bowls or food scoops will have residues from prior pet foods). In order to make these highly specialized veterinary therapeutic diets all manufacturing must stop and the machines must be cleaned from top to bottom to get rid of any potential for any cross-contamination. The machines, ingredients used to make the food, and the finished products also need to be tested to ensure they are free of cross-contamination (e.g. DNA testing is one example). Some of these specialized diets come with matching treats that undergo the same process. Speak with your veterinarian for more info!

What gluten-related diseases exist in dogs?

Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) is a hot topic! According to the Canadian Celiac Association, “a lot remains unknown about NCGS”. Interestingly, people who were originally diagnosed with NCGS may have been reacting to the fermentable fibres in wheat called FODMAPs, not gluten.1 Basically, the bacteria in the gut ferment these fibres, which leads to flatulence, bloating, cramping, and diarrhea. For more info on FODMAPs and the foods that contain FODMAPs (e.g. beans, wheat, dairy, etc.) quick Google search will offer more research.

A quick note on food allergies, because you were wondering:

What about gluten sensitivity in people?

Do dogs and cats get Celiac disease like people do?

No. Fortunately, no. I’ve spent a lot of time searching for scientific articles on PubMed for both “gluten” and “cats” and all I came across was an old review paper on GI disease that talks about feeding “gluten-free” diets in pets with chronic diarrhea; however, this review contains outdated information as it also discusses “bowel rest” (i.e. fasting), which is no longer recommended because it deprives the gut of nutrition needed to heal.

Gluten Sensitive Enteropathy in Irish Setters: This disease has only been documented in a few lines of Irish Setters and is extremely uncommon. It was first noted in England in the 1980’s. Affected dogs show some similar signs to Celiac disease in humans (e.g. chronic diarrhea); however, the disease is not the exact same as Celiac disease in people. Typically, puppies are affected by 6 months of age, have a “wasted appearance”, and do not grow normally.10 Fortunately, many of the affected Irish Setters eventually outgrew the disease if they were properly managed.10 People don’t outgrow Celiac disease. Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome in Border Terriers: This is a movement disorder in Border Terriers (e.g. involuntary tremors). There was one small study conducted in six Border Terriers that responded (i.e. specific antibodies to gliadin in the blood decreased) when fed a strict “gluten-free diet” (unfortunately the diets were not listed in the study). After the study, two dogs were “unwittingly re‐introduced gluten‐containing treats” and both dogs relapsed. Hopefully more research will be done in Border Terriers in the future to better understand this disease.

Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts inappropriately to proteins in the diet. Wheat allergies exist in both people1 and pets (although animal proteins, like beef, more commonly cause allergies than grains in pets), but that is a huge topic for another time. Needless to say, if your veterinarian has diagnosed your pet with wheat allergies using a strict elimination-provocation diet trial (REMEMBER: blood tests don’t work for diagnosing food allergies, so don’t waste your money!) then you must avoid wheat and potential cross-contamination.

There you have it. The truth about gluten.

So, when would I avoid feeding gluten: • You happen to see a very rare case of gluten sensitive enteropathy in an Irish Setter puppy • You are treating a Border Terrier that has been diagnosed with Epileptoid Cramping Syndrome • A person in the household has been diagnosed with Celiac disease and wants to avoid all potential risk of being exposed to gluten Until next time: Keep it balanced and keep it factual!

A Self Defense and Personal Safety Plan Oxford English dictionary defines ‘plan’ as: “An intention or decision about what one is going to do.” To have a plan is to be prepared. It is the thinking, in advance, of how an event or scenario will likely play out. Having a plan sets one’s mind at ease, and brings about peace of mind because the details are already mapped out. There is little to worry about if there is a plan in place; it brings comfort knowing that the answers are already there. The best time to make a plan is well in advance of an event or scenario. We have time to think about it, shape it, intend it, and inform people important to us, of the details. It is like an exam for which we have studied, rather than the one for which we have not. In a self protection Safety Plan, there are specific strategies that must be considered for maximum effectiveness, and a favorable outcome; minimizing risk and saving your life. A Safety Plan needs to be developed well in advance of a threatening situation – just like the exam for which we have studied! Thinking about it, planning and mapping it out in our minds will ensure that we know what we need to do, if ever we are threatened. There are three main components to an effective Safety Plan: 1. Scream and Yell – create as much noise and chaos as possible. Let others know you need help.

2. Fight Back –a perpetrator wants a compliant victim – don’t be one! 3. Run – find another person to help you – have that person phone the police for you. The statistics of physical attacks, especially on women, are staggering, and far too many acts of violence are not even reported. Preparing ourselves with a solid and effective Safety Plan will help to ensure that we can protect ourselves and not be included in the statistics. Take a Self-Defense course; learn the effective strategies to protect yourself. Lorna Selig Safe4Life Personal Safety Training…More Than Self-Defense 403 701 9037 www.safe4life.ca

Is Hate too Great a Burden for Society? What are the costs? Where do you stand? Not too long ago, in a place not far away, on the playground and in a classroom, a young girl was told she was ugly, not loveable and she should just go kill herself. Sadly, she is no longer alive. At nine years of age, Amal Alshteiwi chose to end her life. The power of persistent bullying overwhelmed her. Does this type of hate present too great a burden for society? Life is trying and hard. Why add to its burden? If actions speak louder than words, what are we teaching our children?

38 •

thenewsyneighbour.com

The victims of hate crimes are the most vulnerable members of society. Anti-bullying classes, pink shirt days and/or laws are irrelevant when adults propagate fear and racism in their conversations, social sharing and behaviours. Many refugees to Canada are visible minorities facing ill-informed opinions of people. Those perpetrating these behaviours lack empathy and understanding of who the refugees are and the conditions they are fleeing. The Alshteiwi family escaped war and bombs hoping to find a better life in Canada. Too often, as Canadians, we fail to recognize and express gratitude for the freedom and abundance we enjoy. We experience these privileges because of rights encased in our constitution. Despite these constitutional rights, hate crimes in Alberta rose nearly 40 per cent since 2017. According to an article in Macleans, "The rise of an uncaring Canada", the majority of attacks are against people who are Black, or West Asian. Racism, bullying, and hate are taught behaviours. Further, Andray Domise states: (my highlighting) "To say this emerging pattern represents a phenomenon outside of politics or media coverage was absurd before the EKOS poll. But to persist in such willfully blind beliefs after the poll’s release is outright denialism. Even as members of our government continue to insist that hate crimes and tough-on-immigrants legislation have nothing to do with one another, it’s almost impossible to miss the correlation."

Life is Hard. Why add to the Burden?

Do you find it odd how good fortune breeds attitudes of entitlement, hostility and resentment instead of gratitude? Fear is the root of anger. Anger leads to hate and hate breeds suffering. Failing to see each other, people begin to only see monsters. Times are trying and difficult. The world is filled with uncertainty amplified by the growth of extreme partisanship and populism, not only abroad but here at home. Instead of working to create peaceful environments allowing citizens to thrive, political parties spend more time campaigning than governing. These influencers paint an illusion of the good, old days and excuse or ignore past failures. The inclination to blame someone else dates back to the beginning of time and the pattern has not changed. The absence of proper context accompanies a lack of transparency from politicians. Add inaccurate information about the vital contributions of immigrants to sustainability and it is not difficult to see Canada is headed down a perilous path. Bravado hides fear and a weak spine. Those rude, offensive individuals walking among us, pose potential peril; perhaps, greater than the "threat" of immigration. Further, they may knowingly/unknowingly be denying a lack of confidence and fear for their future, both common human traits. Fear is our only true enemy birthed from ignorance.

Change Starts with Me

It is difficult to correct a problem if you fail to acknowledge there is one. The cost of denying hateful behaviour, is watching it spread its roots in Alberta made evident in Amal's senseless death. A precious, child gone because of human cruelty. Death is too high a price to continue to pretend this situation does not exist or that it does not impact all of us.

When we know better, we do better. When we know better and do nothing, we are no better. The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

I am unbelievably overwhelmed and honoured to represent you again for the next 4 years and I really look forward to being your voice in the Legislature. Growing up in Chestermere has left me with fond memories of playing basketball (badly) against Strathmore High School and the addition of Strathmore to my constituency is icing on the cake! I am in this incredible position because you chose to trust me and the United Conservative Party with your precious province and your futures. There are no words that I can express to explain what that feels like, and how truly humbled I am for this mandate. I would like to take a moment to thank my volunteers and donors. To the volunteers, how does one thank people who go out in -20 to drill holes and put up signs? How does one thank people who are available to you on their days off, when they could be with their families? How does one thank those people closest to you who sacrifice so much time and effort and donate money because they believe in you? I am the most fortunate girl in the world, and I want to say thanks to all of you for the incredible effort that went into our campaign, and the positive and thoughtful way we handled one of the most negative and disrespectful elections that I have ever seen. We are now the new riding of Chestermere-Strathmore, and I am excited to get started. Please have patience with us as we set up our offices, and get staffed and ready to go. Our phone number has stayed the same at this point (403-207-9889), but we have a new email: Chestermere. Strathmore@assembly.ab.ca. We will be starting off our legislative session in the third week of May and will run until just before the start of the Calgary Stampede at the beginning of July to start implementing the 117 pages of policy that were released during the election. Read our platform at: https://www.albertastrongandfree. ca/policy/ . I think you will be impressed. Bill 1 will be the Carbon Tax Repeal Act, and that will immediately put money back into the pockets of Albertans. We will freeze spending, reduce taxes and get the economy growing by sparking industry growth. We will eliminate waste, duplication and non-essential spending. We will withdraw from the federal Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund and implement the Job Creation Tax Cut, which will drop the corporate tax rate from 12 per cent to eight per cent and conservatively result in 55,000 new jobs for Albertans according to leading economists. The thing I love most about campaigning is meeting people at their doors. One common theme I heard in Langdon and Chestermere was the need for a new High School and K-9 school to al-

With a shovel-ready site for a high school in Langdon, be assured I will continue to advocate for needed school builds as I have been doing since I was first elected in 2015. Another pressing need in all our communities is more local services for mental health and other family supports. I look forward to meeting with municipal officials and other community leaders to explore the best ways to grow our communities and provide local solutions. A little bit of everything Gaylene is a Strathmore resident that has trouble taking life seriously and can usually be found making inappropriate or sarcastic remarks around town much to the embarrassment of her family and friends. (of which she has both – honest!)

Hot and cold water, gas and electric pressure washers!

Excuse me. Ma’am you’re looking a bit tired. Last night was one of those nights… the kind that involved some rolling around, heavy breathing and occasional moan. Sheets got tangled; pillows knocked to the floor, naughty words were said. After what seemed like a marathon of tossing and turning and one or two evil-half-asleep looks from my husband, I gave up. I got up. Sleep simply wasn’t going to happen for me.

Which is why, I am sure, today is going to be rough. Like trying to answer the phone by saying hello into the TV remote rough. Like how long has my shirt been on backwards rough? Like a full bag of chocolate covered coffee beans and an expresso on the side rough. Honestly, I don’t think I should be held responsible for anything I say, or do today, because like an overwrought, sleep deprived, high on Cadbury Cream eggs toddler, I am in need of a nap! It’s 8:51 a.m. and I don’t think I’m going to make it to 9:00 a.m., let alone 9:00 p.m. In University, I pulled all-nighters all the time. I survived two degrees worth of 5 hours a night sleeping. I used to crawl between the sheets somewhere near midnight and roll out when my alarm went off at 5:00 so I could go rowing before classes started. Now the only think that can get me out of bed that early is the sound of my cat hacking up a hair ball. As for midnight – well, that happens about twice a year, one of which is New Year’s where I still manage to be in bed by 12:10. So now I am sitting here writing this, not only feeling exhausted, but pathetic too. What happened? When did staying up until 11:00 become risqué? When did a night at home wearing flannel pjs and drinking tea become more exciting to me then glamming up and heading to the bar with the girls? When did I go from functioning on a few hours’ of sleep to scheduling in naps for myself? I imaging somewhere around the time that universities started letting babies attend. I recently had the opportunity to revisit the campus I attended for four fantastic years. A lot has changed since I donned cap and gown. The old library has been replaced by a steel and glass atrocity of architecture, my favourite prof has long since retired and I kid you not, junior high students were swarming the place. The lounge where I used to spend a big portion of my day studying (mostly cute guys,

403-901-0018 www.clarkssupply.com not text books) looked like a Mini-Pop concert. Some of these kids didn’t look old enough to cross the street on their own let alone be attending university. I had to stop myself from bending down to tie some hipster Vans when I saw his shoes untied. I think I might have freaked him out a bit. He looked at me like I had somehow wandered away from a seniors care facility unescorted. And then he said it… he said the word… the word that shouts out to the world that I was no longer part of the young crowd. He, and I’m not happy writing this, he called me Ma’am! “Ma’am” he said in what I know was a condescending tone, “you look really tired, perhaps you should get a good night’s sleep.” I told him, between yawns, to tie his f’n shoes, mind his own damn business and then stomped off in search of some caffeine. I get cranky when I don’t get enough sleep.

tough time making bank like some of these YouTube stars who are on the cutting edge of a whole new business model. Just take a look for yourself and consider giving up that eBay business because maybe, just maybe, the real money is here.

The Guy Focused On Minecraft

Daniel Middleton, aka DanTDM, has a channel devoted to Minecraft and gaming. The 26-year-old Brit reportedly cleared a cool $16.5 million in 2017, making him the highest-paid YouTube star of the year. Not too shabby for playing video games, right?

Moms are always complaining about how their kids won't swallow food. But here's one person whose mother probably had no such problem. In fact, her struggles were probably the opposite – trying to make him stop! Today, Shoenice22 is making use of his unique talent of being able to eat anything (literally) and in the process entertain people and become a YouTube celebrity. Oh, and he also wants to stop world hunger. In the real world, "Shoenice22" is known as Chris Schewe. Schewe is aware that a lot of people think he's a complete idiot, but he isn't bothered by that. He's living in a time when he can really do whatever he wants, even stupid things, and become famous for them. And famous, he is! Chris's channel is one of the most popular on YouTube. He has over 200,000 subscribers, and some of his videos get more hits than a lot of those posted by real-life celebrities. But what could possibly be so entertaining about a man putting random stuff in his mouth and swallowing it? BBs from a BB gun, an entire bottle of balsamic vinegar, painter's caulk, or an entire can of Crisco are just some of the bizarre “treats" he's eaten so far. It's revolting and sometime even repulsive to see him trying to finish his “meals” and hold it all down, and yet, a lot of people love watching Schewe do his thing. Because the truth is, there's more to him than meets the eye. The reason why people watch Schewe eat stupid things online is because of what lies at the heart of his mission. In the 1990s, he served in the US Army in Iraq. As he watched poor children die of hunger, he made it his life's goal to try to end global hunger forever – which is exactly the kind of revolution he hopes to lead through his channel. He wants to raise awareness for the plight of millions starving in Africa through The Newsy Neighbour Magazine

Most of whatever he's eaten has been requested by his hundreds of thousands of followers. (This includes real food as well, like a 9” pizza in 9 seconds with no water to drink.) In a short documentary that was made about Schewe's unique profession, he reveals a few of his secrets – medical marijuana, and cranberry juice. These two have the power to “solve any problem,” he says.

The 8-year-old who makes over $1 million a year playing with toys in front of a camera

Meet Evan, an adorable 8-year-old with the world's best job. He rakes in hundreds of thousands of dollars while doing what all kids do – playing with toys. He is the face of EvanTubeHD, a family-friendly YouTube channel that reviews toys and video games. Evan's videos regularly exceed a million views and the channel earns him a whopping $1.3 million a year. This is one of those internet success stories that make you wonder, “Why didn't I think of that?” It started out as a playful project between Evan and his father Jared – they would make stop-motion videos using clay models of Angry Birds. The videos were so cute that they started to get really popular, and when their first video hit 1 million views, Jared realized how huge it was getting. It wasn't long before the channel became a serious business model. “By doing toy reviews that are a bit ‘out of the box', we try to provide information about the product as well as have that creative flair,” he said. EvanTubeHD now has a dedicated sales team that sells ads and negotiates deals with brands and businesses. “The majority of the revenue is generated by the ads placed on the video itself. Outside of the networks, YouTube/Google handles all ad placement within the site.” Jared also revealed that all proceeds from the channel go into investment and savings accounts for Evan and his little sister. The faceless YouTube star that makes $20 million dollar per year unwrapping Disney toys It's likely that you have heard of DisneyCollectorBR. Yet no one knows who she is, despite her status as the third mostwatched YouTube channel in the United States. Children reportedly love watching the mystery woman (whose face isn't shown in her videos) introduce and open children's toys, many of them from recent Disney movies. DisneyCollectorBR, which Social Blade rates as one of the

top three YouTube channels, is estimated to earn between $1.4 and $21.9 million each year.

The cute brothers who made over $100,000 from finger biting video

Charlie Bit My Finger is a 2007 Internet viral video famous for formerly being the most viewed YouTube video. As of February 2015, the video ranks as the Fourth most viewed video on the site, with over 810 million views and counting. The clip features two English brothers, aged three and one. In the video, the younger brother, Charlie, bites the finger of his older brother, Harry. The boys' father uploaded the video online in May 2007. Howard Davies-Carr, the father of the boys, said the video was "simply an attempt to capture the boys growing up." It's the kind of off-guard clip any family would treasure privately. And in the past, that's precisely what it would have remained. Except that Mr Davies-Carr's decision to upload the 57-second film onto YouTube not only propelled the children into the international spotlight, but also earned the family more than £100,000 (over $150,000). In addition to being one of the most viewed videos on YouTube, it was also the "most favourite" and the second "most discussed" video on the website in the United Kingdom. In a May 2009 report compiled by Visible Measures, which measures video hits across 150 video-sharing websites, "Charlie Bit My Finger" was the thirteenth most viewed viral video on the Internet. As of February 2015, the official YouTube channel for the "Charlie Bit My Finger" video has over 297,222 subscribers. business page needs both the strategy and time, which is not required for a personal account. First, what do you want to accomplish with Instagram? In order to attract, retain and inspire followers, you should have an understanding of who your audience is. What kind of content do they want to see from you? Instagram is a busy place with lots happening in everyone’s feed so while family and friends will wait for updates from your personal account, people expect a business will post on a regular basis in order to earn and maintain their interest. Well-developed branding will be key to growth on this platform. An Instagram bio is only 150 characters long and your words need to tell users about your business and company’s personality succinctly.

Your branding should also carry through in your imagery. Companies with successful Instagram accounts are consistent in the colours, filters and themes of their photographs; this makes it easy for fans to spot them as they quickly scroll through their feed. Experienced companies also know that there is more to Instagram than just photos; compelling captions, relevant hashtags and emoji’s plus taking the time to engage with followers, influencers and other business’s all count towards their success on this platform. Again, don’t be deceived by how easy it is to get a reaction to your vacation photos. A business page needs to be engaging, interesting and most of all, consistently upto-date and this takes time and a plan. On a final note, if you have an existing business profile, make sure it isn’t just getting attention from family and friends. You are putting in the time and effort in order to promote products and services, boost your brand, and ultimately reach new clients/customers.

Instagram Not Quite What It Seems We live in highly visual times but what does this mean for your business? If you are product or hospitality based, you have an abundance of opportunities to capture images. If you offer services, it is a little more challenging. Conceptional photographs, showcasing customer stories, or behind the scenes look at your staff, office life and company culture will have to do the work. There is no doubt that Instagram is popular. I hear a number of businesses say, ‘Everyone tells me I have to be on Instagram’. Two things are at play here. ‘Everyone’ is people with a personal account and businesses often peak at a couple of photographs here and there ‘when they remember’ to post and then the account goes dormant. Instagram is deceptively simple; you post a photo or video, which instantly shows up in your feed to be commented on, liked and shared. Straightforward and fun but a successful

I don’t always carry all the groceries on one arm, but when I do, my keys are in the wrong pocket. Children are like pancakes. The first one is always a bit weird. Q: Why can’t you hear a pterodactyl going to the bathroom? A: Because the pee is silent. Also… because they’re dead. Me: Mother Nature, you cannot fit all seasons into one week. Mother Nature: Hold my beer. The only reason I wanted to be an adult is to have sex and curse. All this ‘paying bills and waking up to go to work’ wasn’t the plan. I still haven’t quite figured out how to break out of this vicious “getting older” cycle I somehow got myself into. Every time we try to eat healthy, along comes Christmas, Easter, summer, Friday, or Tuesday and ruins it for us. Why isn’t there a “nighttime” toothpaste that helps you sleep when you brush your teeth before bed? An onion forces you to cry over its dead body. I have never liked the fact that images are square or rectangle shaped, but camera lenses are circular. I could go to a public park with a dog whistle and just create anarchy if I blew it discreetly enough. I think I could have some pretty sweet conversations with my cat if it wasn’t for the language barrier. There should be a phone number to call if you’re lonely and have already bugged all of your family and friends for the day… where it would connect you with another random caller for a chat.

As a kid, I thought “Stop, Drop and Roll” was going to be a much more important part of my adult life than it actually is. How would a mermaid give birth? Two babies born at the same time on different sides of the world means they have different birthdays. If you attempt to rob a bank, you won’t have any trouble with rent or food bills for the next 10 years, whether you are successful or not. Since your own voice sounds much better to you than it actually does, imagine what Morgan Freeman hears when he speaks. Plants need water and sunlight. Water is blue. Sunlight is yellow. Blue and yellow make green. Plants are green. 100 years ago, everyone owned a horse and only the rich had cars. Today, everyone has cars and only the rich own horses. Taking a nap to get rid of a headache is the biological equivalent of “Turn it off and back on again.”

Have I ever had the same dollar twice? Every time I have to chase a ping-pong ball, I feel like a 3-year-old. I am convinced there is no cool way to chase a ping-pong ball. Do twins every realize that one of them was unplanned? I wonder if I’ve ever bought milk from the same cow twice.

I wonder if one of my ancestors owned one of my dogs’ ancestors. When my tongue is burned from drinking hot beverages, I realize how much I underappreciate the times my tongue is not burned. The biggest joke of Spongebob is that he works at a fastfood place and can afford a house. If Tetris has taught me anything, it’s that errors pile up and accomplishments disappear. I want to lose weight, but I don’t want to get caught up in one of those “eat right and exercise” scams. I’ll see your toddler tantrum and raise you a teen that just had their phone taken away. Hey Marie Kondo. Where do I put my kids when they’re not sparking joy? I just realized I’m not 20 anymore. That sucks.
