Friends make our lives better Time and good friends are two things that become more valuable the older you get. – Linda Poindexter

Where would we be without friends? Good friends are worth more than gold. Following are some quotes about the importance of friends and friendship: The act of friendship is different from the act of loving. In a relationship of friendship both parties care for each other and give and receive benefits from each other. This reciprocity may not exist in the act of loving, for we may love someone without our beloved giving anything in return or even knowing that he or she is being loved by us. – Alireza Nurbakhsh “Good friends are the rare jewels of life... difficult to find and impossible to replace!”– Thomas Jefferson In life we never lose friends, we simply learn who the real ones are. ECS 5th grade yard sale and silent auction The 5th grade class of ECS will be traveling to Washington D.C. in April of 2018. This is an annual educational journey upon which the students are very excited to embark. Each year, the students and parents work very hard to raise the necessary funds for this trip. The largest fundraiser that we host is a massive yard sale and silent auction. During this event, we often are able to utilize products that have been donated from local businesses and restaurants, and we would be extremely appreciative if your company would be willing to donate any items to help us achieve

our goal. Both events coincide with each other on November 11th from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Some interesting things donated to the silent auction are: Crop duster flights donated by Gleason Farms; Passes to USS Yorktown at Patriots Point; Four passes to Ripley’s Aquarium Myrtle Beach; Various gift cards from local business owners; Handmade donations from local craftsmen; Too many other donations to name. If you are interested in donating you can contact the school at 843-332-0164.

Burry Bookstore to host Radney Foster Burry Bookstore will host Radney Foster, for an evening of reading, singing and signing of his new book/ CD, For You to See the Stars. Radney Foster is a powerhouse talent that has helped shape the music scene over the last 40 years. He has written, performed, and collaborated with a wide array of artists throughout his career. He has written a number of chart topping hits that are easily recognizable including Godspeed performed by the Dixie Chicks and Raining on Sunday performed by Keith Urban. He has written and performed with several noteworthy acts including the Randy Rogers Band, Hootie and the Blowfish and Jack Ingram. Foster even performed the lead role in Troubadour, a musical created and composed by Kristian Bush, of Sugarland earlier this year. Foster’s latest project, For You to See the Stars, is a unique and poignant expression of his storytelling

abilities. Music and prose are woven together in this book and CD combination. For You to See the Stars is comprised of a series of short stories that take the reader on a journey through the rustic Texas landscape of Foster’s upbringing all the way to Dallas and New Orleans. Each short story in this book is paired with an original track from the CD which brings it to life. Radney Foster will be including Burry Bookstore as a stop along his book tour to promote For You to See the Stars. Join us on Tuesday, November 14th at 5:30 p.m. for an evening of music and prose. Radney Foster will be sharing excerpts from his book, songs from his CD, and happy to sign copies of For You to See the Stars. This event is free to the public and light refreshments will be provided. Both For You to See the Stars and the accompanying CD will be available for purchase before and during the event at Burry Bookstore.

Emergency Nurses at Carolina Pines receive CEN certification Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center is known for having a nursing staff that often goes the extra mile to receive more training and certifications. To add to the growing list of registered nurses passing the Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) exam are Frank Munn, RN Director of Emergency Services of Carolina Pines and Brandon Singletary, RN in the Emergency Department. Frank Munn is a Hartsville native with over 23 years of healthcare experience. Frank began his career in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, moving from an airborne medic to an airborne nurse. Choosing to care for others has come naturally to Frank. “It’s a natural fit for me, I’ve fallen into that category of personality as the oldest child, the protector, always helping others fix their problems - that’s just my demeanor. The military and healthcare in general to me are always about having a servant’s heart. I want to help others.” Frank holds so many certifications and higher education degrees that his team jokes with him that his nametag needs a smaller font – MBA, BSN, RN, and now CEN. He spent some time at other hospitals before returning to Carolina Pines, and his return has been warmly received by staff and patients alike. “I have a great team here. The group itself is a phenomenal team. I told the staff and senior leadership when I was coming back into this role working here proposes two things. One, the most challenging part of working here is that you are caring for people in the community that you know and love. It’s hard sometimes when you see folks come in and they need assistance, or they have an urgent medical problem. But also, the most rewarding thing about working here is that you are caring for the people you know and love.” said Munn. “There is an extremely high chance that I am going to know the person in the Emergency Department. I may not know an elderly woman directly, but I may have graduated with their grandchild. Or chances are our kids over time have played on the same ball team. The toughest part of our job is also the most rewarding part.” Brandon Singletary, RN of the Emergency Department at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center also received his CEN certification. Brandon was recently named the Nurse of the Quarter and the DAISY Award winner for Nursing Excellence. The awards are chosen from nominations from hospital staff, patients and family members that wish to recognize exceptional nurses each quarter. Brandon spent over seven years as an ICU nurse before he moved to the Emergency Department, and says that the fast-paced work suits him. “I enjoy working with my team, we are all like a big family,” he said. “It’s a huge change from the ICU where you have one patient for a week or longer – here we may see them for a shorter amount of time, but we get the opportunity to help each one. It changes every day, we do any number of procedures.” Helping to care for his ailing grandfather inspired Brandon to choose healthcare as a profession 18 years ago – and he said that going back for the

CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse) certification was a challenge but well worth the reward. “This has been a challenging, but a really good year.”Photo caption: Frank Munn, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, Director of Emergency Services at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center and Brandon Singletary, RN, CEN at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center both received their Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) certification. The combined efforts of

the accomplished staff at Carolina Pines are instrumental in helping ensure the hospital maintains their accreditations with Joint Commission, Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program, American College of Cardiology as a Chest Pain Center and the American College of Surgeons as a Level III Trauma Center. “What makes the Emergency Department so unique is that the nurses in this area must be adept at working with the entire human lifespan – from newborns to geriatric

patients,” said Munn. “Staff must also be able to recognize and treat all medical problems and disorders. That is why this CEN accreditation is so important. To show that these nurses can take care of all these varieties of patients and they not only have a foundation, they have excelled and really have a good understanding of each problem that they may have. They truly are the best in Emergency Nursing.” To learn more about Carolina Pines, please visit www. cprmc.com.

DCIS offering college courses Students at the Darlington County Intervention School (DCIS) can now take college courses through Florence-Darlington Technical College (FDTC). Dr. Zenobia Edwards, director of DCIS, said she is excited to bring more opportunities to prepare students to be career- and collegeready. “This is an initiative I’ve wanted to come to fruition for a couple of years,” Edwards said. “I’m very pleased that our students are getting this opportunity for early exposure to college coursework. I am hopeful this will enhance their academic confidence, and they will pursue college degrees after completing high school.” Nine students at DCIS are already enrolled in

classes such as English 101, Sociology and College Skills. The classes are taught by FDTC instructors. Students will conclude the first classes in December. “We are thrilled to offer this opportunity to the students at DCIS, and we hope this is just the beginning of our partnership,” said Maggie Gause, director of K-12 Relations at FDTC. The partnership is the newest college-credit offering in Darlington County School District, following others such as Darlington High School’s Early College Honor Program with FDTC and Hartville High School’s International Baccalaureate program. For more information, please contact the DCSD Office of Communications at 843-398-2284.

HARTSVILLE RED FOXES Foxes roll over Orangeburg-Wilkinson

The Hartsville Red Foxes opened the first round of the 4-A playoffs with a convincing 45-6 win over the Bruins of Orangeburg-Wilkinson. The win pushed the Foxes record to 10-1, while OrangeburgWilkinson finished their season at 3-8. Continuing a recent trend, the Red Fox defense forced a 3 and out giving the offense good field position. They took advantage with a two play drive, with Tiyon Evans scoring from 49 yards out. Caleb Caldwell converted the first of his seven extra points giving the Red Foxes a 7-0 lead. After forcing another punt the Foxes moved to the O-W 3 yard line behind two A.J. Joyner to Quise Huggins pass completions. Donovan Lambert ran the final 3 yards and the PAT made it 14-0. Using short passes and strong running by

Theo Johnson the Bruins reached the Red Fox 23 yard line before turning the ball over on downs. On 2nd down Tiyon Evans exploded again for a 68 yard touchdown and after Caldwell’s PAT the Foxes had a 21-0 lead. The second quarter began with the Foxes on the move again after another O-W punt. After Evans had a 50 yard run to the O-W 35 yard line, the Foxes stalled and O-W

took over on downs. With a long delay due to an injury to their QB, the Bruins took advantage of 42 yards of penalties to move inside the Red Fox 10. A big interception by Curtis Thompson stopped the drive at the 5 yard line. On 2nd down Evans ran 91 yards for his third TD of the night. The PAT gave the Foxes a 28-0 halftime lead. After receiving the second half kickoff the Foxes

wasted no time getting on the scoreboard again, moving 75 yards in three plays. A key play was a 47 yard completion from Joyner to Dashawn Davis. Collins Bishop finished the drive with a 21 yard gallop into the end zone and the Foxes quickly led 35-0. There was no more scoring in the quarter as Hartsville lost a fumble on the O-W 3 yard line and Keyshawn McDonald intercepted an O-W pass near midfield. The fourth quarter scoring began with Caldwell making a 27 yard field goal giving the Foxes a 38-0 lead. Orangeburg-Wilkinson got on the board with 3:37 left in the game as Theo Johnson ran it in from the 4 yard line. The PAT failed leaving the Foxes with a 38-6 lead. The second unit had an impressive drive behind the running of Dariyan

Pendergrass and Lacy Josey. Josey ended the scoring with an 11 yard run and Caldwell capped his perfect night with 6 PATs and the Foxes led 45-6. Orangeburg-Wilkinson tried to mount another drive, but a JD Pendergrass interception ended the game. The Bizzell’s Offensive Plyer of the Game was Tiyon Evans with eight car-
