Prepare for the storm Storms are something we have become all too familiar with. Within the last few years we have seen our share of storms, not to mention experiencing the effects of several hurricanes. The latter part of last week was a time of uncertainty for us in South Carolina. We didn’t know if hurricane Irma would impact us the way Matthew had done or not so I decided to find out what we should prepare for and how should we get ready for what was to come. I found that there are three things that we need to do when a hurricane or storm is approaching. 1) Before the storm, prepare. Gather the necessary items you will need over the

In our lives we are destined to encounter storms. Storms are those things that move over your life and causes utter chaos and destruction. But we as believers have the same protocol when we discover storms are headed our way. 1) Before the storm, prepare. Read the Word and apply it to your heart, mind and soul so that when storms come, the Word will activate and keep you. 2) During the storm, survive. Hold fast to the Word that is in your heart and look to the hills from whence cometh your help (Ps. 121). 3) After the storm, recover. God will restore everything that was depleted
from you during your tribulation. Joel 2:25, “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.” As you can see there is always hope for the believer. Whether we miss the storm or have to go through it, Jesus has promised that He will never leave nor forsake us. If a storm has come over your life, then that simply means that you my friend are a survivor. So lift your hands and tell the Lord “thank you”! Be encouraged during this journey and know that God is for us! Every blessing to you all!
Nutcracker auditions Auditions will be held Friday, September 15 at the Center Theater for The Columbia City Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker”. Local area dancers are invited to audition for William Starrett, director of the prestigious company, and have a chance to perform in the classic ballet that will be presented in Hartsville on December 1. Dancers should arrive for auditions dressed in black leotard, pink or tan tights, ballet shoes and hair in bun. There is a $20 audition fee made payable to Columbia City Ballet. Audition times are 4 p.m. for dancers age 46, 4:45 p.m. ages 7-12, 5:30
p.m. ages 12-over. Dancers on pointe, please bring pointe shoes. Brenda Cranford School of Dance will be hosting the event and rehearsals will be held at their studio beginning in November and taught by a member of the Columbia City Ballet. There are only four rehearsals and the ballet company will provide costumes for the dancers. This is a great opportunity for dancers to have a chance to perform in this wonderful Christmas classic. DCSD Food Services employees complete second year of culinary training For the second year in a row, Food Services employees from the Darlington County School District (DCSD) completed an intensive food preparation and nutrition training course this summer. Culinary Partners, a nonprofit that specializes in training school food service workers, led the way in the kitchen. Culinary Chef Instructor Tim Page, along with other trainers, joined Executive Director Eileen Staples at Hartsville Middle School for the week-long course. “We get the employees engaged. We realize that it is very important to have healthier kids,” Staples said. “We need to help kids learn that healthy foods can taste good. We want to use more spices, lower sodium and more whole grains to create healthier meals.” The goal of the training is to help the food services employees prepare highly nutritious and tasty meals while following all federal and
state guidelines. Page, who has been teaching high school students in Spartanburg for 13 years, said he thoroughly enjoys the training and watching the employees improve. “It’s a lot of fun. It gives them a nice energy bump heading into the school year,” Page said. “It’s also very important. You’re not going to have healthier children with wishful thinking. Engagement is important.” The week not only included one-on-one instruction with culinary chefs, but

the employees also spend two days in the classroom. Clemson Extension led that portion of the training, focusing heavily on understanding nutrition, efficient operation of a cafeteria and marketing. DCSD’s director of Food Services, Pamela Vaughan, said employees were so excited about the training last year, they were jumping at the opportunity. “It is wonderful training,” Vaughan said. “They love it. We tried to get someone from every school like last year.” Staples said the employ-
ees always enjoy the knife skills instruction, as well as learning about using herbs and spices. “I wish we could do a whole week on just those,” she said. One of most important pieces of the week for Page is the growth he sees in the employees. “It’s exciting. I enjoy seeing their confidence grow regarding how to prepare food properly and safely,” Page said. “Some of them go from nervous to confident. It’s important to see that change.” The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided funding for the training through a Team Nutrition Grant. The South Carolina Department of Education worked in conjunction with the USDA to distribute funding to Culinary Partners, according to Staples. DCSD donated all food prepared during the week’s training to a local soup kitchen.

Hammond invites nominations for Angels South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond announced that his office will accept nominations of charitable organizations for this year’s Angel awards. Every year, the Secretary of State honors several charitable organizations as “Angels.” Specifically, the Secretary of State considers organizations which use at least 80 percent of their contributions for charitable services, have been in existence for three years or more, make good use of volunteer assistance, and do not rely heavily on government grants or grants from other organizations. How Darlington County School District determines school closings
The decision to close schools in Darlington County School District for snow, sleet, extreme wind, rain or other dangerous weather conditions is a decision carefully made by school officials. The safety of more than 10,000 students is the determining factor to open or close the schools. When bad weather strikes, school officials fan out across the county in the wee hours of the morning to determine road conditions. When making the decision to close, cancel or delay schools, district officials travel the roads and review road reports and weather reports, including from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). They also consult with the highway patrol, Emergency Operations Center and local law enforcement to help assess road conditions. The district will use all of those resources – law enforcement reports, NOAA weather reports and eyewitness accounts - to
determine whether to close or delay schools. When a decision is made to close schools because of bad weather or the threat of bad weather, school officials will make a decision by 5:30 a.m. Any decision to close or delay schools will affect all schools in Darlington County. School officials will use the district’s phone notification system, SchoolConnects, to call, text message and email parents and guardians of current Darlington County School District students. The district will also notify local radio stations, television stations and newspapers. The district will place an alert on the district website, as well as post updates on the district’s Facebook and Twitter accounts. The district’s website is www.darlington.k12. sc.us. From time to time, school is dismissed early because of bad weather or the threat of bad weather. When that occurs, students will remain under adult supervision until
the school buses leave for home or until students are picked up by their parents. Buses will run regular routes. If it appears that school may be closed or students dismissed early because of bad weather, parents and guardians will be called by the district’s phone notification system. Local television and radio stations will also broadcast the information. The Darlington County School District website will always have the most up-todate information about school closings or delays. Parents are asked to NOT call the radio or television stations, because doing so ties up the telephone lines. This could prevent school officials from getting through with important information. If Darlington County School District is not mentioned among the schools affected by bad weather, parents should assume that schools will operate as usual. The television and radio stations only have time to list closed or delayed schools.

They are unable to list all the schools that are opening on time. School and district staff members are taught safety procedures for inclement weather. Teachers and staff practice these procedures throughout the year. Every
school has a nurse and/or first aid “First Responder� on staff. They are trained to assist any injured people until medical professionals arrive. If bad weather occurs during the school day, parents are asked not to panic. The staff of the school will keep
children safe. Parents should not take risks out on the road trying to reach the school until they know it is safe to travel. Listen to radio and television for updates and news reports. The safety of the children is the district’s highest priority.
Paddle sports enthusiasts to enjoy Paddlefest Whether you are new to paddle sports or want to learn a new skill, Fall Paddlefest will allow paddle sport enthusiasts to learn basic techniques of kayaking, kayak fishing, paddleboarding, and family canoeing. The City of Hartsville Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Naturally Outdoors to
bring this free event to Lawton Park, 716 Prestwood Dr., on September 24, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. One of the goals of Naturally Outdoors is to help people get outside enjoying our natural resources safely. This event will have a festival-like atmosphere with music and mingling. Those who have their own equip-

Maureen Thomas recognized Maureen Thomas, vice chairwoman of the Darlington County Board of Education, earned recognition by the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) for achievement in the association’s 2016–17 Boardmanship Institute. SCSBA Boardmanship Institute, established in 1982, offers a year-round training curriculum to help board members develop skills and stay abreast of state and national education issues. Workshops focus on school law, advocacy and legislation, improving board operations, leadership for improving student achievement, and other timely topics. Board members can achieve up to six levels of
MAUREEN THOMAS recognition by earning points that are accrued annually from July through June for participation in statewide conferences and training provided onsite in their district. Thomas reached Level Two by earning 40 points
within one year. Level Two recipients receive a certificate and a silver pen. Statewide, SCSBA recognized 147 school board members for reaching one of the six levels for the 2016– 17 year with certificates of achievement and a lapel pin designated their level of accomplishment in the institute. Each year, about 80 percent of board members statewide attend at least one training session. SCSBA is the statewide professional organization serving as a source of information, training and advocacy for the state’s 81 school district boards, county boards and state special schools.

Piratesville Splash Pad goes to the dogs September 17 Although Piratesville Splash Pad is typically closed after Labor Day, it will be open to special furry, fourlegged visitors and their owners one last time for the season. The City of Hartsville Parks and Recreation Department will host the Dog Days of Summer as a fundraiser for the upcoming dedicated Hartsville Dog Park and will give dogs the rare chance to run around and cool off in the fountains, geysers and dumping buckets. Owners will be required to fill out a waiver before
entering the event. Admission for the event is $10 per family, although additional donations are appreciated. The event will take place on Sunday, September 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Piratesville Splash Pad at 1109 14th Street and is open to the public. All four-legged friends must be up to date on their vaccinations to enter the event. Female dogs in heat and puppies under the age of six months old will not be allowed to enter. All pet handlers must be 18 years or
older, or accompanied by an adult. Handlers are limited to no more than two dogs. Upon arrival, dogs must remain on their leash until they enter the event; once they enter they will then be allowed to run around off leash. Owners are encouraged to walk their dog around the park to help him or her relieve themselves prior to entering the event. All owners are expected to clean up after and supervise their dogs while they are at the event. Owners are also
encouraged to not trim their dog’s nails prior to the event as the dogs will be on concrete and it could wear on their nails quickly. Outside food and drinks, for dogs and humans, will not be allowed inside the event. However, concessions will be available for human visitors and must be eaten in the concession area. Donald is a friendly boy who loves to give and get hugs from people. He thinks walks are great and he does pull from excitement when he gets the chance to go out, but after some exercise he settles down nicely. One of our volunteers had him out and said, “It was so hot out that he was happy to just sit on the steps with me in the shade and greet everyone coming in and out.” Donald is super handsome with his unique light brindle coloring. He was turned in by the fire department and enjoyed riding in the truck with the fireman. He has an affectionate nature and good manners, and let’s talk about those amazing ears! When they are up he could blow away on a windy day, but he is equally cute when he lays them back flat. The staff says that Donald is an all around nice boy who is playful and submissive. In his video, he meets Maggie and a game of chase ensues! This loving, sweet guy would enjoy living with an owner who will care for him and make him a cherished member of the family. HARTSVILLE RED FOXES Foxes fall to Conway The Hartsville Red Foxes made the trip to Conway this past Friday to face the Conway Tigers and returned home with their first loss, falling 35-21. This dropped their record to 3-1 while Conway moved to 4-0. The game began as though it would be a defensive battle as both teams forced the other to punt or turn the ball over on downs for most of the first quarter. Late in the quarter Conway began to mount a drive that ended with a 41 yard TD pass. The PAT made the score 7-0 with 1:07 remaining in the quarter. The Foxes then got sloppy and penalties forced them to punt from their 16 yard line as the second quarter started. The Tigers began to click on offense and scored through the

air again to take a 14-0 lead with 9:56 left before halftime. Hartsville started to mount a drive into Conway territory, but failed to convert a 4th and 1 play at the Tigers’ 36 yard line. Conway immediately moved down the field and scored on a 4 yard run with 5:04 left before halftime. Trailing 21-0, the Foxes quickly struck back
and got on the scoreboard with a 71 yard TD pass from A.J. Joyner to Tiyon Evans. The PAT was wide right leaving the score 21-6 with 4:37 remaining before the half. On Conway’s next possession J.D. Pendergrass intercepted a pass and returned it to the Tigers’ 15 yard line. On the first play Tiyon Evans ran it in and Mike Norris converted the extra point.
Suddenly it was a 21-13 game as the half ended. The first Hartsville possession of the second half resulted in a punt, but the Foxes defense forced a 3 and out. The Conway punt was downed on the 2 yard line, forcing the Foxes to drive 98 yards to reach pay dirt. With the offense looking the best it had all night the 98 yard drive ended with a 22 yard Evans run making it 21-19. The 2 point attempt was good and the Foxes tied the score with 5:40 left in the third quarter. Unfortunately that would end the scoring for Hartsville as penalties and turnovers kept them off the board. Conway scored next on a 2 yard run after a penalty-aided drive. The

Becoming REAL ID ready now more convenient for South Carolinians
The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) is pleased to announce a more convenient way for South Carolina residents to confirm if the documents needed to order and buy a REAL ID driver’s license online in the future are on file with the agency. With the agency’s newly designed mobile-first website, customers can log in and learn if they may be eligible for ordering a REAL ID license online when the
cards become available in 2018. “This eliminates the need to call, wait on hold, and confirm that all of the needed documents are on file for you to get a REAL ID,” said Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “Customers can now access this information throughout all hours of the day, not just during normal business hours.” Visit www.scdmvonline. com, search “REAL ID”, and begin the transaction from
the REAL ID web page. You’ll enter your license number, social security number, and date of birth to see if the required documents are on file. “This online check makes the transition from a regular license to a REAL ID license for anyone who’s interested a bit easier,” said REAL ID Project Manager Melissa Cisson. All of the following must be true for you to be eligible to buy a REAL ID license

Potential indicators of roof trouble With regard to home repairs, homeowners may be able to delay some projects until the weather permits or they find room in their budgets. But other areas, including the roof, may demand immediate action. Few homeowners give the roofs of their homes much thought until a problem arises. But learning to recognize potential indicators of roof trouble can help homeowners prevent potentially drastic situations down the road. • Light: Homeowners with attics in their homes can inspect the ceilings inside the attic for signs of holes or leaks. Light peering through the top of the house indicates a hole or leak, as does stains or streaks on the ceiling. • Worn shingles: Shingles should lie flat against the roof, so any that appear to
be buckling or turning up are damaged and in need of repair. A single damaged shingle does not require a full roof replacement, but inspect all the shingles nonetheless. Another indicator of shingle problems can be found when cleaning downspouts or gutters. If the gutters and downspouts contain lots of shingle granules, the roof may soon need to be replaced.
• Moss: Moss on a rooftop may give a home character, but that added character is costly. Shady areas of a roof can be susceptible to the growth of moss and fungi because moisture can be trapped in such areas. If possible, remove moss or fungi from a roof with a stiff brush or hire a professional to do the job instead. Moss may come back even after brushing it
off, so homeowners should keep an eye on areas of their roofs that get little sunlight. In addition, trapped moisture can be very harmful to a roof, so it may be wise to exercise caution and have roofs with mold or fungi growths inspected. • Age: Another indicator of roof trouble may be the age of the roof. Even if there are no visible signs of damage, homeowners whose roofs have some years under their belt may want to consider replacing them. Asphalt shingle roofs typically have life expectancies of 20 to 25 years, while roofs installed over existing layers of shingles may need to be replaced after 20 years. mental benefits. Virgin timber typically comes from commercially grown trees that are not always afforded enough time to reach full maturity. Timber that is reclaimed from old buildings and vessels may very well have reached full maturity before it was cut down to use as building material. Reclaimed timber that grew to full maturity is likely stronger than virgin wood taken from commercially grown trees that were not given enough time to mature. Reclaimed timber also may prove more durable than virgin wood because the former has already dried out after years of contracting and expanding, making it less likely to warp and split than virgin wood that has yet to endure such exposure.
