News Journal’s new editor says “Hello” Hello, my name is Philip James Maenza III. I am the new editor here at the News Journal. I have already met so many new people and long time readers of the News Journal and I look forward to meeting many more. I wanted to take the time to introduce myself a little bit more in-depth to you, the readers. I grew up in Pennsylvania. My parents are pastors of an Assemblies of God church in my hometown. I am the oldest of four siblings. I have two brothers and sister. I went to Houghton College. It is a small Christian liberal arts college in Western New York, about an hour south of

Buffalo. Last fall a good friend was moving to Florence to start a new job. I had just begun my master’s degree online and thought that it would be a wonderful new opportunity to live in South Carolina. I packed up my bags, my cat, and left my winter boots behind and made the nearly 12 hour drive down here. The area has grown on me so quickly over the past few months. I have enjoyed

with Brenda Harrison, the former editor of 30 years before she retired. I saw the impact she had on this community and the important role she played for you as readers. I know I will never be able to replace Brenda. But I do plan to carry on her legacy. I want to continue what she started all those years ago: bringing good news to the community of Florence, Hartsville, Marion and Cheraw. The past two weeks here have already been fun and rewarding and I look forward to many years working to provide the readers of the News Journal with the good news they love. I am always looking for a good news

Montrel West, a senior at Darlington High School who attends the Darlington County Institute of Technology (DCIT), took home first place recently in DCIT’s highly competitive homebuilding project. West and his other carpentry classmates participated in the annual challenge, which requires them each to build a model home from scratch. Students are given creative freedom for finishing touches but must follow a foundational rubric for the home. West’s home featured outstanding quality and craftsmanship, while boasting a front-yard swing and fence for good measure. Also earning recognition in the contest were Shaikeem Freeman-Peterson, Hunter Morrison and Michael Taylor. DCIT Director Robbie Smith said the contest is a

Local business owner Johnathan Hayes and Technician Shane Tolan of Fix it now Satellite recently attended an event for Dish Network called Team Summit 2018, in Orlando, Fla. Johnathan was recognized by Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board Charlie Ergen, and CoFounder, Executive Vice President and Director Jim DeFranco for being a Summit Advantage DISH Retailer. Johnathan has been in the satellite business for 23 years. Pictured above from left to right, Charlie Ergen, Johnathan Hayes, Shane Tolan and Jim DeFranco. This is yet another example

of the real-world skills our students learn at DCIT.” DCIT’s Carpentry class is just one of many hands-on opportunities at the school that gives students practical work experience. The career and technology school educates hundreds of high school students from all over the Darlington County School District. For more information about DCIT, please call 843-398-4796. I had been a reader before I even knew of the opportunity of this position. It was because of the paper that I was able to know of local events, community news, and some of the people that live here. A retirement gender gap What is the retirement outlook for the average fiftysomething working woman? As a generalization, less sunny than that of a man in her age group. Most middle-class retirees get their income from three sources. An influential 2016 National Institute on Retirement Security study called them the “threelegged stool” of retirement. Social Security provides some of that income, retirement account distributions some more, and pensions

John R. Coble III Coble Wealth Management

complement those two sources for a fortunate few For many retirees today, that “three-legged stool” may appear broken or wobbly. Pension income may be non-existent, and retirement

accounts too small to provide sufficient financial support. The problem is even more pronounced for women because of a few factors. When it comes to median earnings per gender, women earn 80% of what men make. The gender pay gap actually varies depending on career choice, educational level, work experience, and job tenure, but it tends to be greater among older workers. At the median salary level, this gap costs women about $419,000 over a 40year career. Earnings aside, there is also the reality that women often spend fewer years in the workplace than men. They may leave work to raise children or care for spouses or relatives. This means fewer years of contributions to tax-favored retirement accounts and fewer years of employment by which to determine Social

Security income. In fact, the most recent snapshot (2015) shows an average yearly Social Security benefit of $18,000 for men and $14,184 for women. An average female Social Security recipient receives 79% of what the average male Social Security recipient gets. How may you plan to overcome this retirement gender gap? The clear answers are to invest and save more, earlier in life, to make the catch-up contributions to retirement accounts starting at age 50, to negotiate the pay you truly deserve at work all your career, and even to work longer. There are no easy answers here. They all require initiative and dedication. Combine some or all of them with insight from a financial professional, and you may find yourself closing the retirement gender gap.
