Getting old beats the alternative Here are some interesting thoughts and comments I found about getting old. “Old age is always fifteen years older than I am,” said Oliver Wendell Holmes Aging is a Catch 22:

When you’re young you have time and energy, but no money. When you’re middleaged, you have energy and money, but no time. And when you’re old, you
have time and money, but no energy. If you haven’t grown up by age 50, you don’t have to. Don’t you hate it when you see an old person and realize that you went to high school together? One good thing about getting old is no one expects you to run – anywhere. Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable. Someday we old folks will use cursive writing as a
secret code. Age gets better with wine. Remember being able to get up without making sound effects? As you age, you learn that whenever you decide something with kindness, you usually make the right decision. Another good thing about getting old is you can eat supper at 4 p.m. If you think you would like to go back to youth, think of
algebra. Over time, we usually become better at socializing, spending and saving money, child-raising, housework, cooking, shopping, traveling, and body maintenance. “Growing old is great – when you consider the alternative,” as the saying goes. The immune system remembers past enemies, making colds easier to beat when you get older. Studies show that sen-
iors are among the happiest groups of people, and that they are significantly more happy than their middle-aged counterparts. You know you’re getting old when happy hour is a nap. At age 65, there are fewer life decisions to make. “It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – English novelist George Eliot.

faculty from around the southeast to our small but mighty dance program. We are excited to showcase Hartsville and all of the unique dining and shopping locations to people from across the region.” The American College Dance Association exists to support and affirm dance in higher education through regional conferences, the adjudication process, and national festivals. The educational mission of the Association is to foster creative potential, to honor multiple approaches to scholarly and creative research and activity, to promote excellence in choreography and/or per-
formance, and to give presence and value to diversity in dance. The Association acts as a national membership service organization to strengthen the educational network for students and faculty within the academic dance community. SC State University awarded $6.2 million for cancer research center SC State University was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $6.2 million by the National Cancer Institute, to establish the South Carolina Disparities Research Center. A portion of the total $12.5 million award will fund the Medical University of South Carolina’s cancer disparities research. The two universities will collaborate on this project. SC State will partner with the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and its Mabry Cancer Center to create a biorepository at the new research center on the campus of SC State. This biorepository will be the first to store solely African American biological tissue for cancer studies. The partnership
will also establish the first clinical trials office at the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg for patients with prostate cancer. The goal of the research center is to improve SC State’s ability to complete effective cancer research and to focus on examining cancer disparities within the areas of prostate and breast cancer. The grant will also allocate funds to create an honors research curriculum, which will allow students to obtain certification in health disparities research. The center will provide an opportunity for the new generation of researchers to train, inform the general public and contribute knowledge to a research field that affects the
lives of many. Serving as SC State’s principal investigator for this project, is Dr. Judith SalleyGuydon, the chairwoman of the university’s Department of Biological and Physical Sciences. She believes that this grant will take SC State’s cancer research to new, necessary heights. “These funds will enable us to explore in depth, the cancer disparities that surround our communities and beyond. With a new, cuttingedge facility, we hope to yield results that ultimately improve the health disparities that many individuals endure,” said Salley-Guydon. “I’d like to point out that African American men in
Orangeburg and across the nation suffer disproportionately, from prostate cancer. We’re hoping that this research has a positive impact on their quality of life as well. With such a talented and passionate team collaborating on this project, I know that we will accomplish these goals and much more,” she continued. Dr. Marvella Ford, a public health sciences professor and researcher at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Hollings Cancer Center, serves as the principal investigator for MUSC’s cancer disparities research. Additionally, she was recently named SmartState endowed chair for prostate cancer research at SC State

It’s nice to be nice
Random acts of kindness are a crash course in being more like Christ. You want to be more like Christ? Then I suggest that you sharpen your acts of kindness skills. For instance, if you are approached by a beggar or panhandler and you don’t have money to give or don’t feel lead to give, then offer a hug instead. Some of us would never think of giving an undesirable, unkempt, smelly homeless person a hug, but Jesus did it to us. According to the scriptures we were wretches undone and our goodness as filthy rags.
