As we approach Thanksgiving Day this coming Thursday and all the busyness that day brings, take a few minutes to slow down and reflect on the many blessings our Creator has given us. I tend to take so many things for granted, so when I start counting my blessings I am overwhelmed. Here are just a few: Family and friends. Those are the people who love me most and show it in so faithfully by their generosity and

kindnesses. Although not wealthy in material possessions, I am so very rich when I consider my family and my friends. My city, state and country. Florence is such a wonderful place to live, not so much because of the ameni-
ties, but because of the wonderful generous people who live here and do so much to look after our own. I am thinking of groups and volunteers who work with Cooks For Christ, Manna House, House of Hope, Lighthouse Ministries, Mercy Medicine, Help4Kids, SNAC, Salvation Army, Boys and Girls Club of the Pee Dee, Naomi Project, The School Foundation, Harvest Hope Food Bank, which are only just a few of the many wonderful organizations.
I am also privileged to live in South Carolina and our United States. We are far from perfect, but surely blessed. My job. What fun I have working for this newspaper. Every day is a learning experience as I meet and talk with so many unique and interesting people in our community. And, needless to say, my job ensures that I am able to sleep in a warm bed, have food to eat, water, clothes to wear, transportation, and many other comforts to
enjoy. My health. I am thankful that I am able to work, to drive, and to travel when time allows. Most of all, I am blessed that I feel good! My church. I am blessed to be able to worship wherever and with whomever I choose. And I am blessed with caring church family. These are just a few of my many blessings. Try listing a few of your own. She enjoys her work and is always willing to step up to the plate.” Karen is a former Florence native that moved to Hartsville with her husband

and two children. She received her BSN degree from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and has been working in healthcare for 15 years, all at Carolina Pines. She began in the ICU and PCU, and she later earned wound care certification. Although many nurses decide their career when they are very young, Karen had always wanted to be a veterinarian. “We always had a lot of animals when I was growing up,” said Karen. “It wasn’t until I was in college that I finally made up my mind to become a nurse.” She is still an avid animal lover and serves as a foster mom for many puppies, dogs, kittens and cats. “My mentor was Tanya Baker, who is my boss now,” continued Karen. “She molded me into the nurse I am today. I worked in PCU, some ICU but mainly PCU – Progressive Care Unit, a step-down unit from ICU. I worked there until 2010 and got my certification in wound care and I’ve been doing that for over seven years now.” “I’m a busy person and try to help everyone as much as I can, even when I’m on the floor seeing my patients,” continued Karen. “If other nurses need help, I try to help them out. It makes me feel better helping other people, especially if they are having a rough day or are busy.” Although she grew up in Florence, the decision to work at Carolina Pines was an easy one for Karen.
“The thing that I like the most about working here is that we all know everyone. We are like a big family… really, this is my second family. We are so willing to help each other out. The employees are tight knit, and we are small enough that we know people in all the different departments. When I see my patients in the community after they’ve been in here doing so much better is really rewarding. They remember who you are, too.” What is The DAISY Award? The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33, from complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP). During his eight-week hospital stay, his family was impressed by the care and compassion his nurses provided, not only to him but to everyone in the family. They created the DAISY Award in Pat’s memory to recognize those nurses who make a big difference in the lives of so many people. DAISY Award honorees demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise and compassionate care, and are recognized as role models in our nursing community. Meet the Army’s Jim Pritchard: His sons picked a military career
In the days leading up to Veterans Day, Duke Energy highlighted someone from each branch of the service as a way of saying thanks to the 2,000 veterans who work for the company. All of the featured veterans have relatives who also served the country. Going into the military shaped Jim Pritchard’s life, and now it’s shaping his sons’ futures. Tricia Pritchard, who works at Robinson Nuclear Plant in Hartsville, said of her husband, “His military service directly influenced his career choice and inspired our children.” Jim Pritchard works in nuclear security at Robinson – as he did at Crystal River Nuclear Plant in Florida – and said, “Most of my adult life has been around protection and defense.” At Duke Energy, safety is still paramount in his work. He entered the Army right out of high school and served at Fort Bragg, N.C., for four years in the 82nd Airborne Division as an infantry squad team leader. Jim shuns the spotlight and isn’t one to talk much about himself. “There are a lot of other people I look up to in the military who deserve more attention than I,” he said. “I have the utmost respect for all military personnel.” The military is a family affair. Jim’s grandfather was in the Army and his brother is retired from the Air Force. Jim’s son, Joshua, a high

the military or college,” Jim said of his stepson. “I challenged him that he can complete both by entering the military to help him provide structure while also pursuing an education. The two seniors inked their intentions inside the Hartsville High School Arena, surrounded by family,

Coker Band fall concert Autism Support Group The Coker College Band is pleased to host its annual fall concert on Monday, November 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Watson Theater of the Elizabeth Boatwright Coker Performing Arts Center on the college’s Hartsville campus. ‘Exchange program’ at Darlington High a dream come true for French student DARLINGTON--In Sally Weiland’s French class at Darlington High School (DHS), achieving success not only opens the door for good grades but also a chance to travel outside of the country. Sometimes, that traveling is reversed. That was the case this year when 17-year-old Coline Bergeonneau from Poitiers, France, visited Darlington recently. Bergeonneau participated in Weiland’s pen pal program for two years with now DHS graduate Ben Goodwill. Bergeonneau, who attends Lycée Victor Hugo high school in France, said it was a dream to travel to the United States. “I remember when I first got my pen pal, I thought, ‘Well, maybe one day I can meet him,’” Bergeonneau said. “And it’s happening. It was my dream to come to America. I went, and I met friends. It’s amazing.” Weiland funds the de facto “exchange program” on her own, because she recognizes the importance of her students’ exposure to new cultures and languages. After 31 years of teaching, Bergeonneau is Weiland’s 18th scholarship recipient and the first from France. Weiland also visits Poitiers, where she spends time in
someone when you have known them for more than two years and you finally get to meet them in person. They become more than a best friend - like family.” The group went kayaking, visited the Florence Museum, traveled to Charleston and Myrtle Beach, caught a blockbuster at the movie theater, and spent plenty of time just hanging out. “It’s better than I was imagining,” Bergeonneau said. “It’s incredible the feeling of saying yesterday we Coline Bergeonneau, an exchange student from Poitiers, France, spent two weeks in Darlington earlier this year. While visiting, Bergeonneau met up with an American rock legend. pen pals’ classrooms sharing her students’ information and a DHS yearbook. “It’s something I believe in,” Weiland said. “If we had more money, we could afford more students. That’s why I call them ambassadors, because they work so hard to earn the trip. That’s because on her birthday, Weiland proposed the idea. They agreed, and the plane ticket arrived digitally within minutes. Less than a month later, Bergeonneau hopped on a 10-hour flight to America. “In the beginning, I just didn’t believe it,” Bergeonneau said. “And now my
friends are jealous.” Weiland said she enlisted Bergeonneau’s help in the classroom during her visit as an advisor for improving the pen pal program. The two worked to prepare videos, photos and descriptions of the DHS students to help in matching pen pals next year. And while work always continues to improve the program, this year’s trip will certainly remain an exciting reminder of friendship and academic enrichment.
Hartsville Young Professionals gives to Carolina’s Kids The Hartsville Young Professionals (HYP) organization teamed up with Retrofit sip-n-seat for a Costumes and Cocktails Halloween party on October 27. HYP members and the Hartsville community enjoyed costume contests, relay races, and Taco the Town food truck. A portion of the proceeds from the evening’s festivities totaling $500 was donated to Carolina’s Kids. The event is one of many community service projects that HYP has sponsored this year. SCSBIT awards Darlington County School District risk control award
The Darlington County School District earned the Excellence in Risk Control Award from the South Carolina School Boards Insurance Trust (SCSBIT). The award, which recognizes a member school district that focuses on reducing workplace health and safety risks, was presented during the SCSBIT Risky Business Seminar October 25-27, in Myrtle Beach. SCSBIT annually selects recipients from among its 60plus member school districts that implement effective prevention and safety programs that are aimed at lowering the number of worker accidents and absences. “Darlington County School District continually makes the safety of students and staff in the district a priority. It is an honor to recognize their effective risk management practices,”

tion premium. Enhancements to the grants are also available for the next school year for meeting certain criteria, including holding district and school-level safety committee meetings, participating in walk-through safety audits and attending SCSBIT’s annual Risky Business Seminar.
AMA launches effort to prevent type 2 diabetes The American Medical (AMA) Association announced a multi-state effort aimed at reducing the incidence of type 2 diabetes nationwide. Building off of its initial work to prevent new cases of type 2 diabetes in South Carolina, the AMA is launching similar statewide efforts in eight additional states to help reach more of the 84 million American adults who unknowingly live with prediabetes —the precursor to type 2 diabetes. Through its collaborations launched last year with the South Carolina Medical Association and the medical societies of California and Michigan, the AMA has been working to develop models for preventing type 2 diabetes that can be used in other states across the country. “With 37% percent of the people living with prediabetes in South Carolina unaware they have the condition and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, we are excited to continue working with AMA to help more thousands reach patients with prediabetes,” said South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) Chief Executive Officer Marjorie Heggie. “Using what we’ve learned through the AMA’s ongoing work, we will have more opportunities to get more patients into proven
programs that can help prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.” The models developed through these collaborations will be used to help galvanize more physicians throughout the country to screen their at-risk patients for prediabetes and refer those at high risk to evidenced-based National Diabetes Prevention Programs (National DPPs) that have been shown to cut in half the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes. This is the primary mission of Prevent Diabetes STAT™ https:// preventdiabetesstat.org/ , a national collaboration between the AMA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention launched in 2015. This effort will also help bridge the gap between the clinical care setting and communities to reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes by connecting more patients to lifestyle evidence-based change programs that are available in their communities, including programs offered where they work, through community and faithbased organizations, and online. The new collaborations are part of the AMA’s strategic effort at the state level aimed at making the most immediate impact on the nation’s health. The AMA first began working with the
medical community in Michigan and has collaborated with leading health systems and business stakeholders, Ford Henry including Macomb Hospital and EPIC. Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, in partnership with EPIC, is piloting a patient registry that could become a national model for enrolling patients into prediabetes with National DPPs and reducing their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. “Our team has designed a user-friendly, efficient registry that has the potential to be a valuable tool for addressing the rising prevalence of prediabetes in Michigan and across the country,” said Henry Ford Macomb President and CEO Barbara Rossmann. The AMA is currently working with more than 45 health systems throughout the U.S. to develop and implement system-wide diabetes prevention strategies. HARTSVILLE RED FOXES Foxes win - tale of two halves By Coach Jimmy White
High school football games consist of four quarters. At Kellytown Stadium Friday night the first and second quarters were the exact opposite of the third and fourth quarters. The Red Foxes overcame penalties, fumbles, and mental mistakes in the first half which found them down 20-7 at intermission, to roar back with a dominate second half to defeat Lower Richland 41-20 in the third round of the 4-A Lower State playoffs. The win allows the Foxes to host Berkeley this Friday night for the Lower State championship. Lower Richland came out fired up and with a good mix of pass and run to reach the Hartsville 22 yard line before turning it over on downs. The Foxes fumbled the ball back to Lower Richland on the first play on the 11 yard line.

Diamond Hornets’ QB Higgens ran it from there and Lower Richland had a quick 6-0 lead. The Foxes answered with a 47 yard TD pass from A.J. Joyner to Tiyon Evans. Caleb Caldwell’s PAT was good and Hartsville led 7-6. The second quarter possibly could be the worst quarter played by the Foxes this year. Penalties aided Lower Richland’s touchdown drive allowing them to take a 127 lead. The Foxes’ next
drive reached the Lower Richland 38 yard line before once again they were forced back by penalties and fumbles. After forcing a Lower Richland punt, the Foxes fumbled once more, but this time Lower Richland picked it up and scored from the 20 yard line. The 2 point conversion was successful and Lower Richland took a 20-7 lead into halftime. The Foxes got the ball to start the third quarter, and quickly proved they
intented to change things around. A drive of over five minutes resulted in a seven yard TD run by Evans. The PAT made it 20-14 in favor of Lower Richland. A JD Pendergrass interception at the 32 yard line gave it back to the Foxes. Four plays later the Foxes were in the endzone on a run by Donovan Lambert and Caldwell’s PAT gave the Foxes the lead for good 21-10. The fourth quarter was complete domination by the Red Foxes as they tacked on three touchdowns and not allowing Lower Richland any breathing room on offense. The Foxes’ scores were a nine yard TD pass from Joyner to Evans, a four yard Evans TD that came after the first of two interceptions by Rod Gattison.
