Courtney Graham Center expansion announced at anniversary celebration The House of Hope of the Pee Dee is expanding its ministry to the homeless in the Pee Dee and beyond with the addition of a 50bed men’s dormitory at its Courtney McGinnis Graham Community Shelter on Church Street in Florence. The 27-year-old non-profit agency announced the expansion on Oct. 17 during a celebration commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Graham Shelter. The new facility is part of a strategic re-positioning of the House of Hope’s physical assets. It includes leaving the group’s longtime shelter facility in Effingham, at the old Bonnaire School; moving its men’s transitional shelter to the former women’s transitional shelter on Darlington Street; and moving all the women in the program to the Graham Shelter. The Graham Shelter site and building was obtained by the House of Hope more than a year ago with help from the City of Florence and several generous donors, including the McGinnis family. Once the new men’s emergency shelter dorm is built, the Graham Shelter will be used exclusively as a facility for women and families. Currently, both men and women are housed at the Graham Shelter. The 6,000-square foot Graham Shelter can accommodate approximately 40 individuals per night and has been running near capacity since it opened in the fall of 2016. The proposed expansion will push the House of Hope’s capacity beyond 115 beds. Tuesday’s anniversary event celebrated the numerous volunteer hours and donations that have gone into the operation. That work has allowed the shelter to serve more than 700 different individuals during its first year of operation. Bryan Braddock, executive director of the House of Hope, calls the first year of operation “absolutely amazing.

We remain in awe. Of course, the numbers we’ve had so far just validate the need for more space, for more beds.” Braddock hopes construction on the new facility will begin soon. Tuesday’s celebration also served as a kickoff for the capital campaign, although in truth, the campaign is already well underway. The Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation, which contributed to the construction of the Graham Shelter, has committed $200,000 to the new project. And several other donors are lined up as well, says Brad-
dock. Additional donations are needed. But Braddock says he’s confident the new facility will be under way soon. “We’ve been so blessed with all that has happened in the past few years,” says Braddock. “There have been so many generous people who have stepped forward to support our mission. SC Attorney General seeks documents on opioids COLUMBIA – South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced a bipartisan coalition of attorneys general seeks documents and information from distributors of prescription opioids as part of a multistate investigation into the nationwide opioid epidemic. This information will enable the attorneys general to evaluate whether distributors engaged in unlawful practices in the marketing, sale, and distribution of opioids. There are 41 attorneys general participating in the multistate investigations. Nationwide and in South Carolina, opioids – prescription and illicit – are the main
driver of drug overdose deaths. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioids were involved in 33,091 deaths in 2015, including 761 in South Carolina, and opioid overdoses have quadrupled since 1999. “Opioid addiction is a public health menace to South Carolina. We cannot let history record that we stood by while this epidemic rages,” said Attorney General Wilson. The attorneys general sent information demand letters to opioid distributors AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health, and McKesson requesting documents about

The attorneys general are using these investigative tools to determine what role the opioid distributors may have played in creating or prolonging this epidemic and determine the appropriate course of action to help resolve this crisis. Attorney General Wilson also wants to assure the residents of South Carolina that he is continuing to actively
work towards addressing this opioid epidemic. On August 15, he filed a historic lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin and other opioid drugs. The suit was filed in the Richland County Court of Common Pleas and alleges that Purdue unfairly and deceptively marketed opioids, which helped create and fuel South Carolina’s opioid epidemic.

Online driver’s license renewal now available The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) announces a more convenient way for South Carolina residents to do business with the agency. Most South Carolinians who have a regular (Class D, E, F, M, or any combination of the four) driver’s license, whose driving privileges are in good standing, may renew their license from the comfort of home at www.scdmvonline.com “This eliminates the need to visit an SCDMV branch and keeps wait times and lines
shorter for the public,” said Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “We’re a customercentric agency, and this is a small step in the process of bringing the SCDMV to customers, instead of making customers come to us.” Now, you will only need to visit the SCDMV every other time you’re due for renewal in order to take a new photograph for your license, as long as your driving privileges remain in good standing. If you renewed by mail the last time you renewed your license, you’re ineligible for online
renewal this time and must visit an SCDMV branch. If you have a commercial driver’s license or identification card or are an international customer, you must continue to visit an SCDMV branch to renew your license or ID. Due to state and federal laws, these cards are not available for online renewal. State law no longer requires vision screenings for most people when they renew their license. This means there’s no reason for many people to visit the SCDMV. A vision screening is still
required for a customer to receive his or her first South Carolina beginner’s permit or driver’s license or if returning to the state after being licensed in a different state. “Customers who did not renew their license the last time by mail can go to our website, confirm their address, and order their new license with a valid credit card,” said Director of Driver Services Annie Phelps. “We’ll use your current photograph and mail your new license. When renewing online, you’ll pay $12.50 for a five-year
license. Please destroy your old license when you receive your new one.” REAL ID licenses will not be available until the first-quarter of 2018. If you need to renew your license online or in person before REAL IDs are available, you will not be receiving this new type of card. Do not drive with an expired license. If you need to renew your license between now and when the REAL ID licenses are available, you will receive the same style of license the SCDMV currently issues.

‘Capitol Steps’ authors to speak at library The authors of “Capitol Steps and Missteps: The Wild and Improbable Ride of John Jenrette,” will make a presentation and host a book signing at the Florence Library on Nov. 2. Author John Clark and contributor Cookie Van Slice will be in the Joe Stukes Room at 5:30 p.m. Don Fowler, Wofford Class of 1957 and author of the foreword will introduce the speakers. Fowler is former National Chairman of the Democratic Party. John Clark is a Kingstree native who lived in Florence for a few years while working for Jenrette. Cookie Van Slice is a longtime confidante of Jenrette. When congressional aide John F. Clark met his future boss, South Carolina Congressman John Jenrette, in 1975, he was awestruck. Jenrette seemed to be
everything Clark was looking for in a leader. With intense charisma and uncanny knowledge of how Washington worked, Jenrette seemed poised to lead a New South and destroy the common stereotype of white southerners as narrowminded racists. Jenrette was indeed all the things Clark hoped him to be. He advocated for African Americans in an era when his political opponent insultingly sent a truckload of watermelons to a prominent black leader’s home. Jenrette became an enlightened champion of civil rights for both racial minorities and women. Then,everything changed. How we can fight the opioid epidemic together By Alan Wilson, SC Attorney General South Carolina has a drug problem and many elected leaders have begun looking at how best to deal with it. In August, I also took action. My office filed a lawsuit against a company for its role in creating that problem. This lawsuit is not a magical silver bullet that will end this epidemic and the company being sued is not solely to blame for the crisis. However, when we look at the statistics and we read the stories we are left with the inescapable conclusion that we must take action now. In 2016, South Carolina ranked 9th in the nation in opioid prescribing rates. Since 2011, more than 3,000 South Carolinians have died from prescription opioid overdoses. In 2015, there were more deaths in South Carolina from taking prescription opioids or heroin than there were homicides. Between 2000 and 2013, the number of babies born addicted to opioids has quadrupled. There have been more opioid prescriptions written between 2012 and 2016 than there are residents in South Carolina. There are some who believe that this epidemic only affects “druggies” or heroin users, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that most heroin users started with prescription opioids. More than three out of four new heroin users report abusing prescription opioids first. Typically, someone gets hurt or has surgery and is given a prescription opioid for pain. Because the drugs are so addictive, they may continue to take the drug even after they should have stopped or at doses that are dangerously high. Once they can no longer get more of the prescription drug, they turn to buying heroin on the street, since heroin is also an opioid. Many of the overdoses happen because the potency of street heroin varies so widely, and sometimes includes fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that’s even stronger than heroin. Whether it is prescription opioids, heroin, or fentanyl, the result is too often deadly. Many of our citizens have personally struggled or watched a loved one struggle with this addiction. Many have watched a loved one die from this addiction. As taxpayers, we need to be concerned as well. Since 2007, South Carolina has spent roughly $15.8 million on Purdue opioids through its Medicaid program and more than $28 million through our State Health Plan for public employees. Medicaid spending for OxyContin from 2013 to 2016 was 90% more than the closest competitor drug. There has been an additional burden and expense borne by law enforcement, emergency providers and social service agencies, including $6 million dollars in expenses for agencies treating substance abuse disorders alone. The statistics and stories are alarming and they demand action. That’s why my office has filed a lawsuit against Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin and other opioids. Let me be clear that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a credible company lawfully selling an approved drug on the free market to people who desperately need it. However, when, as our complaint alleges, a company knowingly markets an extremely dangerous and addictive drug to doctors and patients in a way that leads them to believe that it is not as dangerous or addictive, or more effective, that is a problem. This lawsuit is one of the ways we can fight the opioid epidemic, however everyone has a role to play. We can all personally fight the epidemic by taking these steps: –If you have an injury or surgery and a doctor prescribes an opioid for pain, ask if there’s an alternative. –If you and your doctor decide an opioid is the best option, get it and take it for the shortest time possible. One problem now is that a doctor may prescribe a 30day supply when all that’s really needed is three or four days. –If you do have prescription painkillers, keep them locked up so someone else cannot abuse them. –And if you have leftover pills, dispose of them immediately by taking them to a participating pharmacy that’s a controlled substance public disposal location. You can also take them to your local police department or sheriff’s office that takes part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The next one will be on Oct.28. In addition to taking these steps, we all need to become better educated on this threat. The opioid epidemic is real and it is devastating our communities, but we can slow and even reverse it by having open conversations and working together.

Expand the health savings account ‘safe harbor’ to reduce healthcare costs A. Mark Fendrick, MD and Rashna Soonavala As the health reform debate continues, partisans in both parties should adhere to a simple, overarching principle: help people who were hurt by Obamacare, but don’t hurt those who were helped by the law. In other words, policymakers ought to focus on reducing the rising premiums and deductibles that have harmed millions while still preserving the coverage that’s now guaranteed to people with pre-existing conditions. Fortunately, the Trump administration is considering an executive order that would accomplish both goals. Specifically, the administration may allow highdeductible health insurance plans to cover services used to manage chronic diseases before customers have reached their deductibles. The plan already has broad, bipartisan support. High-deductible health insurance plans surged in popularity in the early aughts after health savings accounts, or HSAs, were established in the tax code. HSAs offer a triple tax advantage. Deposits are made with pre-tax
income. Savings grow tax-free. And people can withdraw from their accounts without paying any taxes, so long as they’re using the money to pay for a qualified medical expense. The kicker? HSAs are only available to consumers who enroll high-deductible health plans. This year, individual consumers with such plans are on the hook for the first $1,350 in healthcare expenses. The sole exception to this mandatory out-of-pocket spending is for preventive care services, such as screenings and vaccinations. A “safe harbor”provision in the tax code requires insurers to cover these services, even if individuals or families have not reached their deductibles. The administration’s efforts to improve the nation’s health insurance offerings would expand this “safe harbor.” Right now, medical services used to treat any “existing illness, injury or condition” are excluded from the safe harbor. So the 133 million Americans with diabetes, HIV, depression, and other preexisting conditions must pay the entire cost of their doctor visits, tests, and prescriptions until they
reach their plan’s deductible. This lack of pre-deductible coverage discourages people with pre-existing conditions from opening HSAs. When Americans are asked to pay more for medical care, they buy fewer services. About one in three Americans with a highdeductible plan admits to delaying or avoiding care for chronic conditions. Nearly 50 percent of enrollees with a chronically ill family member report problems paying for medical care or other bills. It’s senseless to prohibit highdeductible health plans from covering services that prevent the chronically ill from growing even sicker. This new generation of highvalue health plans would offer lower premiums than most existing health plans, bringing relief to those burdened by rising premiums, and more generous coverage for pre-existing conditions than current high-deductible plans. Leaders in both parties support this reform. In 2016, Reps. Diane Black (R-TN) and Earl Blumenauer (DOR) came together to introduce the Access to Better Care Act,

Carper (D-DE) and John Thune (R-SD) sent a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury urging the IRS to modify the safe harbor provision to ensure patients “have full access to adequate preventive care and chronic care management services.” By giving insurers the flexibility to expand the safe harbor, the Trump administration would make HSAs more attractive -- and boost the medical effectiveness of highdeductible plans. As a result, millions more Americans could find insurance that matches their financial and medical needs. A. Our country has 4% of the world’s population yet consumes nearly 80% of the world’s prescription drugs. This provides a huge inventory of prescription drugs to be misused and abused and its increasing availability is one of the leading causes of this crisis. Florence County has one of our state’s highest rates for prescription drug abuse related emergency room visits. The individuals, families and lives it affects have no socio-economic, gender or cultural boundaries. This is a community wide problem that requires a community wide response. Each of us can be responsible and accountable in assisting with lowering the accessibility of unused and expired prescription drugs by disposing of them properly. I encourage you to inventory the unused and expired medications in your home and properly dispose of them and safeguard those that remain in your home. To assist with the disposal of unused and expired prescription drugs, the Florence City Police Department conducts a bi-annual drug take back day. The next one is scheduled for Saturday, October 28, 2017. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office also provides a drug drop box in the main lobby of their facility at 6719 Friendfield Road, in Effingham and it is available during normal business hours, 8:30-5:00pm, Monday-Friday. I urge everyone to take advantage of these local resources in decreasing the availability of unused and expired prescription drugs. Mentor-Connect names 2018 Mentor Fellows A new initiative that prepares the next generation of mentors to assist perspective grantees for the National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education (NSF ATE) Program has named three Mentor Fellows for 2018. The Mentor-Connect Project provides mentoring and technical assistance to help two-year colleges learn to prepare and submit competitive grant proposals to the NSF ATE Program. Mentor Fellows ensures that well prepared mentors are available for this work. Mentor-Connect is based at Florence-Darlington Technical College and is funded by the National Science Foundation, grant numbers 1204463 and 1501183. The Mentor Fellows experience, which begins in January 2018, is one facet of the MentorConnect regenerative leadership development effort. The main thrust of Mentor-Connect, an ATE project of the South Carolina Advanced Technological Education (SCATE) Center, is to broaden the impact of the NSF ATE Program by diversifying the pool of two-year colleges and educators who receive ATE grant awards. Mentor-Connect mentees are faculty from twoyear, associate-degree-granting institutions that are eligible for
Small Grants for Institutions New to ATE. Mentor Fellows is a multiyear initiative. The next application date will be Sept. 28, 2018. Top Seed Taylor Townsend sweeps Florence Open Taylor Townsend, the top seeded singles player in the McLeod for Health Florence Open, takes home singles and doubles titles. Townsend defeated Ysaline Bonaventure 6-1, 7-5 in an intense, but quick match that lasted just one hour and 18 minutes at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center Sunday. Townsend won Saturday’s doubles championship making her the first player to win both single and doubles at the McLeod for Health Florence Open. Townsend is fresh off of a double victory in the Sumter Pink Open, where she won both the singles and doubles championships there as well. As for Bonaventure, she used her heavy hitting to power her way to become the only two time finalist of the McLeod for Health Florence Open. In 2014, she faced CiCi Bellis and eventually lost in the last round of competition. On Saturday, top seeded

The City of Florence Recreation Department and the Florence Youth Basketball League will begin registration for winter youth basketball on Nov. 1 and run through Nov. 30. A parent or guardian can sign the participant up online at www.cityofflorence.com/ParksRec_Live/Home. Parents can also sign up at the administrative offices located at 513 Barnes Street. All participants must be signed up by a parent or legal guardian. Each registrant needs to bring a birth certificate if they have never participated in any City of Florence program. Games will be played at the new Pearl Moore Gymnasium and Barnes Street Activity Center. Age groups for players will be 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 and 15-17 year olds. There will be separate girl’s teams in the age groups of 9-10 and 11-12. All other age groups will be co-ed play. Girl’s teams will travel to play other teams in towns surrounding the Florence area. Rules are specifically designed by age groups. The groups are based on the age they are as of Sept. 1, 2017. Anyone interested in volunteering as a coach should stop by the City of Florence Recreation Administrative Offices located at 513 Barnes Street, Florence and fill out an application. All coaches must be certified under the National Alliance of Youth Sports (NAYS) and approved by the City of Florence Recreation staff.

Trinity-Byrnes goes pink for breast cancer awareness Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School observed a Pink Out on Tuesday, Oct. 17, in support of breast cancer awareness. Members of the JV volleyball team sold pink “Titans Have Hope” tshirts on campus for $10 each on Monday, Oct.16. Faculty, staff, and students were encouraged to wear them to school Tuesday, or other pink apparel. Middle school students made sweet treats for a baked goods sale during break on Tuesday. Proceeds from the shirt and baked goods sales will go to McLeod Cancer Center in honor of Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School moms who are breast cancer survivors.
FSD1 meeting to discuss plans for new school The Florence One Facilities Plan is currently in phase two of building new schools. The pay-asyou-go model schedules the construction of a new Williams Middle by the year 2022. A meeting, set for Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. will seek the input of citizens and parents of students who will benefit from the new school. This meeting will be held in the auditorium of Wilson High. All parents whose children attend schools that feed into Williams Middle, as well as Williams Middle School community members, are encouraged to attend. FDTC Entrepreneurial Forum Gala planned Florence-Darlington Technical College’s Educational Foundation hosts its third Entrepreneurs Forum Gala on Thursday, Nov.16, at 6 p.m. at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology (SiMT). This year’s class of honorees were chosen by the last Forum awardees. During the event, the Foundation will recognize and honor seven entrepreneurs from Darlington and Florence counties whose hard work and dedication to the community has greatly influenced the local economy. Combined, they represent a very diverse group of companies and professions. “The individuals we’ll be honoring have played such a large role in the growth of the Pee Dee, and we want to celebrate their spirit of entrepreneurship,” Jill Lewis, Vice President of FDTC’s Foundation, said. “Through their business leadership and entrepreneurial activities, these individuals have set the benchmark of working towards the prosperity and growth of our region.” The seven Forum members that will be recognized and honored include: Husband and wife, James and Karen Aikens. West Florence High accepted as associate member of National Consortium of Secondary STEM schools West Florence High School has been accepted as an associate member of the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools (NCSSS). As an associate member, West Florence joins other secondary schools and schools with specialized STEM centers located in the U.S. with non-profit status, whose primary objectives are parallel with the Consortium’s mission. The Consortium’s mission is to advance STEM education by providing professional development and networking opportunities for educators and enriched learning experiences for students. In order to be accepted as a member of the NCSSS, schools must have a science, technology, engineering and mathematics focus; require students to take advanced course offerings in STEM areas; include authentic research school-wide; maintain affiliations with local colleges, universities, and research facilities; and allow students to participate in external STEM related competitions. Among the benefits of the membership are an online profile of the school in the NCSSS directory; the opportunity to send students to the Student Summer Research Conference; and reduced registration fees for the annual professional conference. Sexton American Legion Post 1 hosted a banquet on Oct. 10 to congratulate recent Boys and Girl State graduates The boys spent a week at Anderson University learning about government, team work and camaraderie. They set up fictitious cities, elected leaders and learned about governing. They worked hard and learned a lot. Many feel they made lifelong friends and would like to go back. Post 1 sponsored 40 young men under the leadership of Judge Gene Morehead, long time Legionnaire. Each participant spoke to the gathering about their experience and thanked the Legion for sponsoring them. They called it a life changing experience. Post Commander Don Handley presented each of the young men with a certificate, reflecting their participation in Boys State. The young ladies went to Presbyterian College in Clinton for the same week. There were two girls from Johnsonville High School and two from The Kings Academy. The experiences were the same – life changing. Legion Auxiliary President Vickie Gimla read a moving email from Madison Graham from Johnsonville describing her experience and how grateful that she was for the opportunity to attend Girls State. “It was fine community event that showcased some of our future leaders. The catered meal by Rogers BBQ was outstanding and the students and families had a wonderful time,” commented Kenneth M. Curran, Post 1 Public Relations Officer.

Col. Frank Brown, President of the Col. Matthew Singleton Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) in Sumter, was guest speaker at the October meeting of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Samuel Bacot Chapter meeting held at the Florence Country Club. Brown educated NSDAR members about the SAR, the largest male lineage organization in the U.S., consisting of 50 societies, over 500 chapters and over 34,000 members. It is dedicated to assisting members, schools, teachers and the public in efforts to sustain and preserve history and constitutional principles. He said the local Col. Matthew Singleton Chapter is very involved in the area, working with local veterans, JROTC programs, Eagle Scouts, and community leaders. McLaurin receives $10,000 from Burlington Stores Burlington Stores, Inc., through its partnership with AdoptAClassroom.org, presented a $10,000 donation to McLaurin Elementary School in Florence One, in celebration of its new store in Florence. Richard Tourtillotte, a representative from Burlington Stores, presented the check to McLaurin Elementary Principal Deborah Cribb during an assembly that took take place last week at the school. Organ concert to be presented on Halloween at Central UMC A Halloween organ concert will be presented by Dr. Don Grice, organist and music director at Central United Methodist Church, on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of Central UMC. DARLINGTON – Halloween’s almost here and downtown Darlington will be alive with activity. The Darlington Area Recreation Department and the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association (DDRA) will offer children a downtown Trick-or-Treat experience from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at the Public Square. Employees of area businesses will be handing out treats to costumed children, and some will be dressed in costumes themselves. “We want to make this one huge Halloween event for everyone in Darlington,” says Lisa Chalian-Rock, executive director of the DDRA. The Darlington Housing Authority, a patron of the event since its inception, will provide a bounce house and slide, as well as treats. Blue Choice Medical will have a variety of games, including giant Jenga, Dominoes, hula hoops, jump ropes, and giant checkers. Other booths on the courthouse grounds include Girl Scouts of Eastern Carolina, Darlington County Library, Molina Healthcare, First Baptist Church of Darlington, New Beginnings Church, and Paparazzi Jewelry. “It’s exciting to see this event grow over the last three years. We have had such great response from all the businesses and from the community as a whole. From the courthouse, we
just saw costumes streaming along the sidewalks there were so many kids.” The free event provides a safe environment for children to trick-or-treat as well as giving businesses an opportunity to show their community support. Those participating will have a pumpkin on the door. Most are on the square and one block out on Exchange, Pearl, and South Main Streets. Pulitzer Prize winner headlines Pee Dee Fiction, Poetry Festival Poet Gregory Pardlo, whose collection of works Digest won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, is the headliner for the 11th annual Pee Dee Fiction and Poetry Festival held on the campus of Francis Marion University. The annual two-day festival will be held Nov. 9-10 in the Lowrimore Auditorium. It features panel discussions and book signings by the authors. It is free and open to the public. Pardlo will be joined by awarding-winning authors Jennifer Haigh, Ross Gay and Dan Chaon. The festival serves as a major cultural event at FMU and plays an integral role in fall classes. Works by the participating authors are taught in select classes. Students then have an opportunity to meet with the authors in special workshops and discussion groups. Dr. Rebecca Flannagan, the chair of the University’s Department of English, Modern Languages and Philosophy says this
year’s crop of writers aren’t attending just because they’ve won awards, but because of the impact they can have on students as well. “Whenever we choose writers for the Pee Dee Fiction and Poetry Festival, we always consider one thing: choosing writers whose texts will impact and affect our students and community,” Flannagan says. “However, we have been fortunate to also bring in award-winning writers, as well… We’re happy when accessibility and award-winning go together.” The Pee Dee Fiction and Poetry Festival originated in 2006 as the Pee Dee Fiction Festival. The festival has expanded to include poets as well as fiction writers. Notable participating authors have included Andre Dubus III, National Book award winter Terrance Hayes, former Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey, Tobias Wolff, and others. Central, Cumberland UMCs unite in fellowship Central United Methodist Church and Cumberland United Methodist Church held their annual C-Unity Gathering on Oct. 1. The churches are located across from one another on Coit Street. Rev. time with each other. I am of the mindset that others could benefit from what we have begun to establish between Cumberland and Central,” said Rev. Anthony Hodge, Pastor at Cumberland UMC. This year’s gathering was held at Central UMC where musicians from their casual service, The Well, led them in worship. The members then shared a meal, Holy Communion, and conversation which centered on each table creating a sentence to be included in a collective prayer reflecting their desire for grace, peace, and unity. Central UMC member Eliya Osaki said of the event, “Regardless of cultural and background differences, it was nice to see people getting together to sing together,
laugh together, fellowship and share the meal together. Also, it was inspiring to see and hear someone’s passion for taking down the walls that are dividing us. I hope we continue to get together like it's not a special event but it's a normal thing. After all, we are brothers and sisters in Christ.”
