RCMP files from October 16 - 22 Dan Beaudette The News Advertiser October 16 2:41 Complainant called 911. When members spoke with the complainant it was determined that he had mental issues and wanted to read his poem to the police.

12:08 Complainant reported a suspicious person going door to door looking for help for his broken down trailer.

The truck the male was seen with was stolen. The bobcat and trailer were recovered and the matter is still under investigation.

00:10 Driver was pulled over for a suspended license, violation ticket issued and vehicle towed.

17:30 Complainant reports they responded to an ad on kijiji. Paid a deposit through e-mail transfer of 600.00. When the complainant arrived the person selling the item was not there. This matter is under investigation.

October 17 13:25 It was reported to the RCMP that they were cleaning out a trailer and found stolen property. Member attended the locations and located several items which were seized.

14:43 It was reported that after leaving court where her child was testifying, the suspect and family followed them home at a high rate of speed. The driver of the vehicle was identified. The complainant is to provide a statement and video of the offence and this matter is still under investigation.

October 18 3:34 am – Complainant disrupted persons stealing ATV from his garage, one ATV recovered and second one still outstanding. Matter still being investigated.

7:23 am - Complainant reports that his F350 was stolen over night. The vehicle has been located and no suspects at this time.

5:50 am - It was reported of a break and enter into a shop. Several items

were stolen including a motor vehicle.

Vehicle was recovered in Edmonton and matter still under investigation.

10:25 Complainant reports theft of truck and trailer overnight. The truck was located in the ditch and trailer was located in Ft. Saskatchewan by RCMP. 9:15 A person at the front counter complaining that a renter left the house in disrepair. This matter was referred to the Landlord Tendency Board.

13:46 It is reported that a truck and trailer was parked on a range road for several hours. Members attended and located the vehicle and the occupants reported that they pulled over to sleep as they were driving from BC to Alberta.

14:23 Complainant advised of a break and enter into his garage and truck.

Possibility of black checks 15:51 It was reported to the detachment that a license was removed from a vehicle in the back yard. Registries was contacted to cancel the plate.

2102 It was reported that an intoxicated

male is standing outside a liquor store.

Police attended. The male was located and advised he was not allowed to enter the store and was told to go home.

October 19 13:29 Dispute between neighbours that is ongoing. Members attended and spoke to both parties and dealt with the

matter.

13:38 Complainant attends the detachment to report someone had rear-ended her vehicle and left the scene. There was a note on her windshield from a witness who advised the person seen the incident and this matter is still under investigation.

19:16 Break and enter into a residence, from door pushed in and several items were stolen. This matter is still under investigation.

23:52 Landlord - tenant dispute.

Landlord decided to install new flooring in the middle of the night since renter had not paid rent. Members attended and dealt with the matter accordingly.

October 20 21:50 Complainant called to report upon returning home seen a male running across their property. Members attended and searched the property with negative results.

17:21 Mischief to trash cans, ongoing.

It is reported female going through trash cans and leaving bags of garbage from the bins in the back alleys. Patrols made and unable to locate.

12:30 Complainant reports someone tried to ram his gate. Vehicle was located. Occupants of the vehicle were neighbours to the complainant and no damage was done to the fence.

14:05 It was reported that a person was causing a disturbance and upsetting staff at the library, male appears to have been drinking. RCMP dealt with the matter 15:52 Complainant was in contact with a person to fix a memory stick. The person said the images on the memory stick were illegal and offered young girls to the complainant. This matter is still under investigation 23:41 RCMP attempted to stop a truck.

Driver attempted to switch places with passenger, the driver was believed to be impaired and arrested. The driver was charged accordingly for impaired.

October 21 12:29 A silver Dodge Ram was pulled over as the plate did not match the vehicle. The driver was prohibited from driving as well as breaching condition. The vehicle was seized for 30 days and the driver was charged.

4:17 Complainant reports a person who jumped over his fence with a flashlight.

Canadian Sheeple Arthur Beaudette Opinion - News Advertiser Election time always brings me a familiar recurring feeling.

Canada is populated by sheep. Hence the title of my column.

The reason I’m reminded of this is that of the voter turn out and the commentary surrounding that. I believe the last municipal election, we were in the area of 40% turnout. Again, this time around, Vegreville was a bit above par, Edmonton was hovering around 30% and Calgary had the highest turnout in 40 years at 58.1% of registered voters. Federally, the last election had a 68.3%.

Now, I will admit, a 58% - 68% turnout is respectable. However, playing devil’s advocate, the 58% in Calgary for this election was the highest in 40 years.

Edmonton was at 30%. To me, this says that despite all the crying and whining about how things are done in that city, about 70% of people are so apathetic that they can’t get off the couch long enough to vote. Sure there are people with extenuating circumstances who may have missed the vote,

but for the most part... the sheep either don’t care or don’t feel anything will change if they do vote.

Australia has a mandatory vote. Regardless of where you are in the world, or what you might be doing, it is your duty to vote.

If you do not vote and do not have a valid reason, you are fined $20 for the first offense and $50 for future offenses.

I’d like to see something similar to this in Canada but with a reward rather than a penalty. Pay us to vote... It’s not like the Government can’t afford to give us some of our tax money back. But more on that in another column.

It is still rather sad that we would have to go to such an extent.

Brave men and women before us fought so we would have the right to a voice an opinion and not be punished for it. I think we should honor their service by exercising the right to choose. Having said that, I was also told once by a veteran that he was not offended by people not removing their head cover during the anthem (it infuriates me) because of his service and those that died and won the right for that person to make the choice themselves. So perhaps I’m looking at it the wrong way.

For those people who do not vote, because they think it doesn’t matter, it is easy to see why. Just look back over the last 100 years.

Have taxes ever really gone down? Have the scandals gone away? Do the various territories work together? Is there more harmony in our country?

Not long ago I read a piece written by a political Scholar who made the point that the only way to ensure a good government was to “kick them out every 4 years... all of them”.

The logic seems solid. Of course, there would be a few months of traction to gain, but then they would get to work knowing that in 4 years they would be out of work for 4 years and only if they did a good job would they have a chance to get that cushy job back.

It’s happened only a few times in recent memory. I don’t mean a slight shift, I mean a real house cleaning. And we don’t have far to look to see it. In 1971 after 36 years in power, the Social Credit party was kicked out in favor of the PC party. Then in 2015 after 44 years in power, the PC’s got kicked out in favor of the current NDP Government. If we did that every 4 years, we may have more choice and get better results. It can’t really get worse, can it??

Is it possible that we the sheeple of Canada can really push change, or are we doomed to work and be sheered annually for our taxes with no real change to look forward to?

Now go out there and graze. Ottawa needs a new $200,000 cover design for another deficit budget.

Rosanne Fortier Vegreville and Area Sixth Annual Awards Gala was meant to honor and recognize exceptional individuals and businesses who are dedicated to making Vegreville and area an awesome place to live, work and play.

A full house of citizens attended at Vegreville Social Centre on October 18.

The night began with a reception of cocktails and a bountiful supper catered

by Good Enough to Eat by Diane.

President of Chamber of Commerce, Kathy Dmytriw opened the program by saying that they would like to congratulate all the nominees for their contributions to the community.

Emcee, Jamieson Brown said we should recognize people who go beyond what is expected of them while he thanked the businesses who supported this event. A representative from each business who sponsored the award was on hand to present the award.

Mayor Myron Hayduk and Carl Ogrodnick from County of Minburn Council No.27 brought congratulation messages.

MLA Jessica Littlewood who has recently been appointed as Parliamentary Secretary of Economic Development and Trade for Small Businesses said the night was about businesses and everyone who gives back to their communities. Littlewood mentioned that the economy is starting to turn around and it’s thanks to business owners like these are that this is happening.

The Home Based Business of the Year was awarded to Davin G Photography because they demonstrate excellence in business operations and customer service. Davin Gegolick and his wife, Lisa followed their dream and made it a reality. They are regular supporters of many community organizations.

New Business of the Year was awarded to Too Cheezy who demonstrates excellence in business operations, marketing, sales and customer service. Their concept and menu are different than what is already offered in restaurants and it is geared towards comfort foods that include a Ukrainian option.

90 Years Ago – October 26, 1927

While Tuesday morning’s rain stopped threshing for a day or so, the machines had had over a steady week of it and a big dent was made in the crop during that time. Possibly about 45 to 50% is now threshed in this district. Two or three weeks of decent weather will see the end. Yields continue to be in excess of anticipations. This some compensation is obtained for the “tough” grade which is characteristic in this district. The highest mark yet is Eli Tkachuk of Hairy Hill, tops the whole list so far with the following: 10 acres of measured land gave him 740 bushels of wheat; an average of 74 bushels per acre.

Reports from a number of points in the province indicate that threshers in some instances are operating machines without having secured a license from the Department of Agriculture as required under the provisions of the Threshers’ Lien Act. This license may be had by sending in one dollar to the office of the Publicly Commissioner, Department of Agriculture, Edmonton, and the thresher will also be supplied with a copy of the sections of the Noxious Weeds Act.

75 Years Ago – October 28, 1942

Last week end saw the start of winter weather, when thermometers dropped to 5 above zero on Saturday morning and a light snow, accompanied by a stiff wind, was blown into the standing stooks.

More snow has since fallen and a definite stop has been put to threshing operations for the time being, maybe until next spring.

Edmonton Recruiting Centre reports the following recent enlistments: Helen Louise Mary Dubuc daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Dubuc of Vegreville, Clerk Stenographer. Trains at Edmonton.

Joseph chilibecki, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Chilibecki. General Duties. Trains At Edmonton. Has a brother in the RCAF in Canada.

Edward Hayduk, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hayduk of Plain Lake, Aircrew. Trains at Edmonton.

Vegreville Kinsmen Club have pledged themselves to send 100 pounds of magazines each week to the merchant marines. Those who have magazines in fair repair are requested to turn them in to any of the following stores: Wener’s Bakery; Warren’s Meat Market or Vegreville 5c to $1 store. The kinsmen will be most grateful for assistance in this matter from Citizens.

50 Years Ago - October 26, 1967

Member of the St. Joseph’s General Hospital School of Nursing Graduating Class were: Cathleen Tkachuk, Willingdon; Christine Clarke, Lloydminster; Elaine Olson, Holden; Sylvia Zakordonski, Vegreville; Jeraldine Oliphant, Medicine Hat; Marion Stashko, Vegreville; Margaret Procyshyn, Clandonald; Claudette Kelly, Edmonton; Sandra Knies, Edmonton; Sylvia Kitlarchuk, Mundare; Ruth Uhryn, Woking, Janet Hrynyk, Mundare; Rose Marie Stang, Camrose; Marie-Line Mailloux, Lafond and Jeanette Kriaski, St. Paul.

Mundare Mayor Mile Slepanki was unseated in last Wednesday’s civic elections following the count of votes. Peter Polischuk was the successful candidate in the three-way battle which also saw Paul Stadnyk sidelined. In the election of councillors henry Moroziuk and Marshall Woytkiw were elected from the four-man slate.

Steve Kereliuk made his first bid in civic politics a success last Wednesday when he topped the polls with 347 votes in Vegreville voting. Wilf Horton, seeking election for his third term was a narrow four vote winner for the second seat over Mike Craddock an incumbent for the past 11 years.

Ice making is well underway at the Recreation Centre and it is expected that it will be ready for use on November 1st.

25 Years Ago – October 27, 1992

The newest resident at the Elks Park is a beaver. Town staff are trying to live trap the beaver and relocate it to another area. At the moment the critter is chewing up park trees but, if the beaver is not caught the ice on the pond may not be safe for winter skating. A beaver will make air holes in the ice to breathe through.

Retirement plaques were presented to County of Minburn council and staff on Monday, October 19. Retiring this year are Mabel Yaremcio, councillor, 3 years; Mike Barlott, councillor, 22 years and Larry Powley, county manager, 29 years.

The Heather Curling Club officially opened on Friday, October 16.

The first rock was thrown by Kim Connell. Connell is the past president of the Heather Curling Club and was instrumental in getting a new curling rink. The facility is a joint venture of the Vegreville Agricultural Society, Town of Vegreville, Cultural Association and the Heather Curling Club.

Hospital Auxiliary volunteers Evelyn Carter, president; Mary Chomik, secretary; and Marion Baxandall, treasurer donated $1500 to Eugene Rudyk, St. Joseph’s hospital administrator. The ladies also donated another $1500 to the Vegreville Long Term Care Centre. The money will be used for the purchase of equipment that will further the care and comfort of the patients.

Catalonia: Fake Referendum, Fake Independence

By Gwynne Dyer Catalonia, the north-eastern region of Spain (pop. 7.5 million), declared independence from Spain on Tuesday evening. Independence was “the people’s will”, said regional president Carles Puigdemont, referring to the 90% “yes” vote in the referendum on 1 October.

He called on all foreign countries and organisations “to recognise the Catalan republic as an independent and sovereign state.” He seemed not the least perturbed by the low rumble of companies moving their headquarters out of Catalonia, nor indeed by the squadrons of pigs flying overhead.

Only three little things detracted from the joy of the occasion. The first was that the Catalan president and his frends had no constitutional authority to separate Catalonia from Spain, or even to hold the referendum. It is a unilateral declaration of independence, and neither the national government in Madrid or foreign governments will recognise it as legal.

The second problem is that the referendum in Catalonia was a fake. The mere 43% of the population who voted in it almost exactly equalled the 44% of residents who wanted independence according to the latest opinion poll. The same poll put the number of people who wanted to stay in Spain in the majority, at 48% – but very few of the anti-independence people voted in the referendum.

This was no mere oversight. The separatists already knew from an “advisory” referendum two years ago that only pro-independence supporters would vote in it, while supporters of staying in Spain would boycott it. The r earlier referendum also deliv delivered a huge ma majority for independence – in o the same low on turn-out.

So hold another

referendum, but this time say it’s for keeps.

Separatists will vote yes, and anti-independence voters will abstain. Then use your fake 90% victory to claim that you embody the “people’s will”, and whisk Catalonia out of Spain before they know what hit them.

Which brings us to the third problem: if Puigdemont acts on Tuesday’s declaration and actually takes Catalonia out of Spain, it’s going to be very lonely out there. Not only Madrid but other European governments understand the game the Catalan separatists have been playing.

The European Union has made it clear that if Catalonia splits from Spain, the region would cease to be part of the EU and would have to re-apply for membership (which Spain could veto even if everybody else said yes). That has huge implications for the Catalan economy, since twothirds of Catalonia’s exports go to EU countries.

Spain also bears much blame for the present mess, since its inflexible constitution forbids independence for any of its regions. (That’s why the referendum was illegal.) So you can understand the frustration felt by Catalan separatists, but the truth is that they didn’t have majority support for their independence project, and have used illegitimate tactics to get around that inconvenient fact.

Puigdemont has declared that he is “suspending the effects of the declaration of independence” for a few weeks, but the Spanish government is not going to negotiate on the basis of those referendum results. Prime Minister Rajoy has now directly asked Puigdemont whether he has declared independence or not.

If he says he has, then Madrid will almost certainly activate Article 155 of the constitution, suspend Catalonia’s autonomy, and take direct control of the region. From there to the first violence against the “Spanish occupation” shouldn’t take very long. When you live in a country that has had three civil wars in the past 180 years, you should be more careful.

Mike Hewitt District Fish and Wildlife Officer Feeding wildlife can do more harm than good. In Vegreville, this is becoming an issue, particularly with foxes.

As fish and wildlife officers, we understand that it is easy to feel a connection with wildlife. It may be tempting to leave out treats for wild animals, especially if you feel they look hungry or skinny. However, even if you are only trying to help, the reality is that feeding an animal can cause it to lose its life rather than helping to improve its life.

Why is that? First, wild animals that are fed by humans become dependent on artificial (human) food sources. They can lose their natural hunting and foraging instincts in favor of looking for handouts. In turn, they lose their natural fear of humans and pets, which means they are more willing to approach and be around humans.

If they don’t receive the handout they are looking for, they may become aggressive, which often does not end well.

Second, human food is not good for wild animals. In some cases, their digestive system is not able to handle human food or extract the nutrients they need from it. Furthermore, when foxes and other animals learn where to get handouts, they can start to accumulate in those areas, which increases the risk of diseases and parasites spreading among their population, and even among our pets.

If you want to help wild animals, one of the best things you can do is to keep garbage, compost and pet food indoors or in wildlife-resistant air-tight containers.

You can also help to avoid problems by reducing available shelter for animals on your property by trimming dense foliage and closing off spaces underneath decks, outbuildings, and steps.

On the other hand, one of the worst things you can do is tossing food to wildlife or leaving it out for them. It is also a bad idea to approach or touch wildlife.

Feeding your pets outdoors can also attract wildlife, and it always a good idea to have your pet on a leash when it is outdoors or to supervise it when it is in your backyard. Lastly, don’t put out garbage the night before pickup as this will give wild animals more time to get into it.

Vegreville 4H Multi Club News Caiden Steinwand and Abby Pritchard Submitted A year full of excitement and learning to do by doing.

Vegreville 4H Multi Club off to a great start as the 2017 – 18 AGM was held on October 11. Members voting in their executive for the year: Results were President Chelsea Downing, Vice-Pres Tezra Dubuc, Secretary Colt Cannan, and Treasurer Zackery Farr! The members also voted in their general leader Connie Steinwand and Assistant leader Amanda Pritchard. Project leaders voted in were: Small Engines- Shawn Zabrick, Light Horse – Rachel Farr, Foods – Connie Steinwand, Crafts – Sharron Steinwand, Travel/Exchange – Connie Steinwand and Vet Sciences – Rachel Farr.

There are a total 24 members this year ranging from ages 9 - 17. Coming up soon for the group will be enjoying their Halloween Party, a trip to the CFR and Tire and Electronic Recycling. We are Excited for a fun year with an amazing group of children.

Tower Garden presentation at Rotary News Advertiser Alicia Sakundiak of Juice Plus gave a presentation on Aeroponics and the Tower Garden. An advanced form of hydroponics, aeroponics is the process of growing plants in an air or mist environment rather than soil. Constructive Criticism Sgt. Jerry Nutbrown RCMP Ponderings – Vegreville Detachment Once again I use a title that only partially indicates what this article is going to be about. As I write, this I have had 2 quite opposite experiences today where one was very helpful and the other, not so much.

The negative one was a phone call from a male that would not identify himself to one of our support staff. He refused to provide his name, swore at our clerk, made inappropriate comments and in so many words said that the police don’t do anything. The clerk put him on hold so he could speak with a supervisor, an appropriate course of action. When I answered the phone the caller had already hung up. I think most can see that this does no good in helping us improve our service nor did it help the caller with whatever they needed help with. The language and inappropriate comments aside, there was nothing gained by either party in

this exchange.

Now, the other interaction with a fellow that took issue with how he was interacted with is a different story. The fellow came into the detachment and asked to speak with a supervisor. I went to the front and introductions were made and the gentleman told me of an interaction he had with one of our members the previous day. He voiced his concerns respectfully and did so hoping to improve our service to the public. We discussed the details of what happened and he expressed how he felt it could have gone to make it a better contact with a police officer.

The time the fellow took out of his day to stop by in person and speak with me was very much appreciated and will help us improve.

As you can see, these two contacts with members of the public went very differently and I’m sure you see which one was helpful. The fellow that had come in had been issued a ticket which is

typically viewed as a negative contact with police. Still, he didn’t stop by to complain about the ticket, he came in to help us improve our service. Thank you! He had a genuine interest in us putting a better product on the street (to put it in a commercialized term).

As investigators, we are trained to drill down on information, or comments, to extract details. Saying that the police don’t ever do anything is a generalized comment with really no merit on face value. Speak up with your comments and discuss them while being willing to resolve the issue, an important requirement in conflict resolution. Details are required.

The bottom line is that we will gladly take constructive criticism, feedback and recommendations that come from a credible source that is willing to talk their issue through with an honest intent to resolve it. In our work, we place higher credibility

This is a sale where everything is free and there are tons of tables with clothing, bedding, kitchen items, books, toys, and other essential items.

There were a record number of donations and people who shopped on October 14.

Pastor Darryl Crocker said this is a place where people can donate items they don’t use or need anymore for people who can use them. Vegreville Alliance Church tries to help out the community in every way they can.

This is just one of their church ministries they do for the community.

This sale turned out to spin an early start on education as the youngsters; especially Nathan was fascinated by all the books.

Rosanne Fortier Sometimes the citizens of Vegreville invent a theme which is so creative people feel like they are entering a real live movie with community members in it.

Peoples’ fantasies came true when they wore the attire of the medieval era at the St. Martin’s Foundation Harvest Ball at Vegreville Social Centre on October 21.

There were 225 people who attended this ball. Miles Wowk was the emcee. This event also offered cocktails, a live auction and a dance with the band, Wednesday.

Proceeds generated will go towards programs, books, activities and field trips for St. Martin’s School.

Everything had a middle-age feel to it; including the supper. Chair of Harvest Ball Committee, Barbara Strydom said they decided to go with the theme, A Medieval Feast: royal gathering because the Game of Thrones is so popular now.

It also gave them a chance to use longer tables which they felt would bring the community together well.

A healthy Halloween Rosanne Fortier A lot of children complain after Halloween that they have stomach aches and headaches. This can often be attributed to eating too many sweets and junk food.

There is a way to have better memories of Halloween and that is by giving out treats that are factory wrapped and healthier.

Some stores carry small bags of sunflowers and pumpkin seeds that don’t have the shell on them.

There are vegetable and fruit leather snacks.

Protein and energy bars have a lot more nutrients in them than most traditional chocolate bars.

Dark chocolate is healthier to buy than milk chocolate and some stores even sell the unsweetened variety.

A package of popcorn is good but make sure the children don’t choke on it.

Small bags of whole grain crackers are healthier than chips.

Those tiny boxes of cereal might encourage your child to have breakfast after Halloween is over.

There are even cookies that come in small package and are made with graham, figs and other healthy foods. Small boxes of raisins are also a good choice.

Give out packages of crayons or even coloring books as an alternative to treats. Or a small gift card to a dollar store, confectionary or fast food restaurant is always fun to receive. If they choose to buy some junk food then, at least it won’t be when they are overloaded with it.

Nettie, Rick, Doug, Jim and Leslie are checking up on Mom and me on a regular basis. Metro, Annie and Adele (Lala) are also checking up on us and spoiling us with joyful visits, never without treats of Beets and Horseradish (your favorite), potato borscht and sauerkrout perogies. Ivan, Andrea, Ritchie/Ricky are doing the trees and at my beckon call. Elk Island region launches new violence prevention protocol Submitted Representatives of the media, families and community members are invited to join Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS), Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) and New Horizons School for a ceremonial signing to officially launch the newly created Elk Island Violence Threat Risk Assessment Protocol on Oct. 23, 2017.

Over the last year, EIPS, EICS and New Horizons have worked in partnership with a number of community partners throughout the Elk Island region to develop a violence threat risk assessment (VTRA) protocol. The protocol is meant to help prevent violence in schools and communities by outlining ways to identify threats, a common language and understanding around threat assessment, a multidisciplinary approach to violence prevention, and how to make use of the expertise of community partners. By signing the protocol, all partners—school boards, the RCMP, government agencies and community agencies—are agreeing to be accountable to the protocol’s purpose and share the obligation to actively take steps to prevent traumatic events in schools and neighborhoods.

“Violence prevention is a community responsibility, where all community partners work together to promote and maintain safety,” says Trina Boymook, the board chair of EIPS. “The signatures on the protocol represent a vast partnership charged with creating and maintaining school environments where students, staff, parents, and oth-

ers feel safe.”

The Elk Island Violence Threat Risk Assessment Protocol is based on the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response model of VTRA, where VTRA teams are put in place to collaborate for the common goal of reducing violence and promoting individual, school and community safety. All of Elk Island’s multidisciplinary VTRA teams are trained in the theory and practice of child and youth violence threat risk assessment and tasked with following a multi-step process that includes immediate response, data collection, initial assessment, comprehensive risk assessment, intervention by a multidisciplinary team, long-term treatment planning, and follow up support.

“The continued safety of students and staff is the No. 1 priority in all we do at our schools,” says Justine Wright, the board chair of EICS. “The signed protocol reaffirms this commitment and ensures all partner organizations commit to responding to any form of violence or threat of violence that impacts the quality of life for children and youth.”

Andrew School Raises Funds Submitted Andrew School and 360 Fitness are teaming up to raise money for a new fitness facility for students at the school.

On November 4, the two groups are hosting a special fundraising gala in Sherwood Park—featuring a threecourse meal, special guest speakers, raffle prizes and much more.

All the money raised from the fundraiser is going towards a new fitness facility at Andrew School. Currently, the school doesn’t have a viable fitness

space to offer optional sports-recreation programming to its junior high and senior high students—such as sports performance and sports medicine. Any extra physical education programming is taught at recreation centres throughout Strathcona County and in the Town of Vegreville.

“We’re talking about driving anywhere from 40 minutes to 60 minutes, which puts a financial strain on the school,” says TJ Kennerd, the principal at Andrew School. “The new fitness facility will allow us to offer more optional courses, ongoing access to the centre outside of instructional programming and learning opportunities focused on healthy living. It’s a win-win for us.”

In total, the school hopes to raise $5,000 at the upcoming 360 Fitness Fundraising Gala. The school also plans to host additional fundraising activities throughout the year to raise a lump sum $15,000—expected to be matched with a government grant. The total $30,000, will then be used to cover the costs associated with converting the school’s former computer lab into a fitness space and purchasing the needed equipment such as free weights, weightlifting machines, spin bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, benches, mirrors and special flooring.

AHS Influenza Immunization Program begins Monday Alberta Health Services Submitted Starting Monday (Oct. 23), Albertans have the opportunity to protect themselves and others against influenza through Alberta’s annual influenza immunization program.

Offering influenza immunization, free of charge, to all Albertans six months of age and older, the vaccine will be available at hundreds of Alberta Health Services (AHS) public influenza immunization clinics, as well as at many pharmacists and physician offices around the province.

“We have seen cases and outbreaks of inf luenza already,” says Dr. Digby Horne, Medical Officer of Health Central Zone.

“You may be healthy now but, without immunization, everyone is at risk.

Prevention is your only protection.”

Immunization is the most effective means of protecting against the strains of influenza virus circulating each season. Because those strains change from season to season, Albertans are reminded they cannot rely on having been immunized in years past.

“Last season, influenza immunization cut Albertans’ risk for influenza by just more than 40 per cent. That’s great, but last year’s immunization won’t protect you this season. You need this season’s immunization to be protected this season.”

Over a six-month period last season, more than 1,600 Albertans were hospitalized and 64 Albertans died with influenza. Influenza causes more emergency department visits than heart attacks and strokes, not to mention significant downtime from work

and leisure activities.

“Influenza does not discriminate,” says Dr. Horne. “Though some Albertans are at greater risk of severe complications, no one is naturally immune to influenza. Please don’t take the risk. Influenza can be one less thing we battle this winter. For yourself, and your loved ones, get immunized.”

Rosanne Fortier Local high school students received a jump start in planning for their future at the Education Liaison Association of Alberta (ELAA) Career and Post-Secondary Fair at St. Mary’s High School on October 18.

Vegreville Composite High School’s students were the first ones to speak to the recruitment officers from various colleges and universities in Alberta who showcased and explained about the courses and programs they offer.

Students also asked about dorms and other concerns about campus life and a few professionals were around to speak about their chosen careers.

Vegreville’s Constable Jaison Gagnon said he would recommend any student who wants to become a police officer for the same reasons he did to go for it. Constable J said he enjoys helping people and wanted to do something where he truly felt he could make a difference. He said anyone who is interested in this field will find it to be one of the most rewarding careers to get into because you help people on a daily basis. He said people needed an inquisitive personality and an inborn desire to make sure they are available and put other people first. A lot of the time, he has to put the job before himself because sometimes they have to go into situations where it is dangerous. A person needs to be really dedicated too.

Michael Fraser from Mount Royal University said their programs range from arts to business. They have science programs and have one of the best nursing schools and programs related to athletic therapy in Canada. They have strong majors in communication programs and a really strong program in interior design.

Marina Zayonc was representing Portage College where the main campus is in Lac la Biche. This college offers everything from business to trades to university programs, as well as, human services, health and wellness and other courses. They are a college so they don’t offer full bachelor degrees but students can take the first two years of several different programs.

The college also has transfer agreements with other universities in the province so students can transfer easier.

Josiah Summer represented Prairie College at Three Hills which is a small bible college. They are fully accredited and offer a number of two-year college programs and four-year bachelor degree programs in arts, religious studies, as well as, other professional programs in humanities and theology.

They have Licensed Practical Nursing, Primary Care, Aviation program and more. The college also helps to develop students’ Christian faith and discipline; helping the core of a person’s discipleship.

Katelyn Ewanus was from Lakeland College which is at Vermilion and Lloydminster. Ewanus said they offer programs in agricultural sciences, environmental sciences, all the trades, university transfer and applied degrees, business, energy, human services, health and wellness and more.

A Happy Halloween Is A Safe One Rosanne Fortier Halloween is a time where children are permitted to eat some junk food and get to cater to their mischievous side.

However, if adults don’t help kids observe safety tips these fun times can get destroyed.

Non-toxic make-up kits are better to use than masks as masks can obstruct kids’ vision. With costumes, it’s best to buy light colored ones and put reflective tape on them.

Make sure costumes are comfortable and fit right so children don’t trip on them. Remember, safety before beauty.

If your child is under 10, make sure to accompany them or have a trusted adult go along with them. If they are going with older kids or teenagers, give them a flashlight and a cell phone and tell them they must be home by a certain time. Tell them to cross at corners and look both ways before crossing streets and to walk and not run when entering homes. Don’t accept rides from strangers and only go to well-lit homes.

Don’t go near lit candles or anything that is fire-hazard.

Tell kids not to eat anything until you inspect it. Stay away from eating anything that is not factory- wrapped, the child is allergic to or could cause children to choke.

october 25, 2017 Viola Braun Fox Submitted The Warwick Ladies Club held their 95th Anniversary on Sept. 9th at the Warwick Hall. It was well attended by present and past members and congratulations were received from MLA Jessica Littlewood and Councillor David Melenka.

Viola Braun Fox, our gracious MC extended greetings, and Historian, Jean Hughston, gave a short history of the Club.

The Club was formed in 1922 on the corner of land 3 1/2, miles east of Warwick in a small church, the United Church, where Reverend Cromb ministered. A Ladies Aid Group was formed to help the needy In the area by sewing pajamas, quilts, and small blankets which were donated to the St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Vegreville. Eventually, this small ladies group expanded to form The Warwick Ladies Club, The Club continues to raise funds for charitable organizations.

President, Wilma Cherniawsky, thanked all who attended and presented each long-term member with a certificate of appreciation.

Entertainment by Debra Fedoruk and Rachael Melenka was much appreciated and the Celebration concluded with a ‘High Tea’.

A special thank you to Jean Hughston, a long time member of 53 years, for all her efforts in making this event a successful one.

Waste Reduction Week

By Rachel Farr Communication Coordinator - Town of Vegreville Mayor Myron Hayduk proclaimed the week of October 16 - 22, 2017 as Waste Reduction week in the Town of Vegreville. Mayor Hayduk calls upon citizens and civic organizations to

acquaint themselves with waste issues and make a daily effort to reduce waste for the planet’s health.

From cardboard, paper and plastics to organics, you can recycle it all and always ensure that your recyclables and compostables end up in the right place.

Feeding the Hungry

Dan Beaudette News Advertiser Canadian Foodgrains Bank member, Terry James, was one of the organizers of this very worthwhile project. The 114 acres that were seeded and harvested was supplied at a very reasonable rent

by Tim Nawrot. Mr. James said, “this is a community effort and the community did come together on this one.”

The three combines in the pictures that were used in the harvest were provided

by Webb’s Machinery, Deerland and Tingley’s. The trucks for hauling the grain to the Pioneer elevator at Lavoy were provided by Viking Colony, Brent Bohaychuk, and Terry James. Pioneer grain made special arrangements to receive the Canola.

It was a very windy day, but Terry figures it would take approximately 3 to 4 hours to complete the 114 acres. Terry said the seed was donated by Viking Colony and Grant Durie while the fertilizer was donated by Stephen Achtymichuk and Laniuk Farms. When it came time to spray Laniuk Farms stepped up and donated the chemicals.

Terry said they would get approximately 5500 bushels of canola from the 114 acres and would net them approximately $ 60,500.00. This money goes directly to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, the government of Canada matches it dollar for dollar then it is given to the countries with famine. The countries that it is given to try and buy food locally for their people which also helps their economy that is shattered at times.

Terry said we are so fortunate that our country is among the highest yielding country in the world despite our weather conditions and short growing season and we just want to share a little.
