Chamber holds forum with election right around the corner Joe Machney Reporter As the people of Vegreville gathered for the forum on September 29 at the Social Centre, ten candidates waited on the stage, ready to tell the people of Vegreville what they have to offer them should they be elected. Tim MacPhee and Myron Hayduk are competing for the position of Mayor of Vegreville while Ann Waters, Jerrold Lemko, Taneen Rudyk, David

Berry, Tina Warawa, Greg Kuroluk, Marielle Brodziak, and David MacDonald all competing for six positions on Town Council.

The evening began with Vegreville Chamber of Commerce President Kathy Dmytriw welcoming everyone to the forum and passing the mic over to

RCMP files from Sept. 25 - Oct. 1 Joe Machney Reporter September 25 08:00 Report of mischief. Three youths were seen throwing baseballs at the door of a school. The caller spoke to them and they ran down the street.

Afterwards, the complainant noticed that the flower boxes had also been knocked over. The youths were not located so nothing further was done.

08:33 Report of a CRA scam.

13:27 Report of stolen property. The complainant attended the RCMP to report that some boards were stolen from his fence and that he was concerned that his horses might escape.

Still under investigation.

14:52 Report of CRA scam.

15:09 Report of a theft of a bicycle.

Complainant came to the detachment to report that her bike had been stolen.

She returned later to say that it was found by the dumpster.

19:41 Report of a dispute between landlord and tenant. Both were intoxicated and were advised to settle their argument when sober.

September 26 22:44 Report of a male lying on a rooftop vomiting. Members attended and located the male who was highly intoxicated. The male was arrested and lodged until sober.

22:54 Report of a noise complaint. The subject was throwing things around in his bedroom and was reported to be highly intoxicated. Upon arrival, members noticed that the individual had calmed down and was sitting on his bed watching TV. Nothing further was done.

September 27 06:44 Report of two vehicles being stolen overnight. The suspects gained entry to the garage using the opener from one of the vehicles and retrieved both sets of keys from inside the house.

The vehicles were located in Saddle Lake and three people are in custody.

Still under investigation.

08:53 Report of an individual wearing a hoodie and ball cap checking the doors of a vehicle. The complainant had a camera but was too far away to identify the individual. No damage to the vehicle.

10:45 Report of a break and enter to a garage. The vehicles in the garage were rifled through and the door openers were missing. No damage to the property and the matter is still under investigation.

September 28 00:31 Report of a pick-up truck going into the ditch near the train tracks.

Another vehicle was spotted in the ditch and all occupants fled on foot. The

matter is still under investigation.

01:20 Report of a stolen truck. After ditching the stolen vehicle, the suspect stole a truck nearby and drove by the RCMP and fled the area. The truck was later recovered on a street in Vegreville.

02:34 Report of a break and enter to a garage. The suspect got into the garage with the garage opener and stole the keys and the truck while the owner was in the house. Still under investigation.

05:51 Report of a stolen truck from his girlfriend’s driveway. The vehicle was located on another street in Vegreville and was later picked up.

07:04 Report that a garage had been opened and that their vehicle was stolen. Still under investigation.

13:26 Request for a well-being check.

13:59 Report of a well-being check. The complainant called the detachment asking for assistance in locating their brother. Last known residence was at a hotel. The brother wants to inform him of their mother’s passing. RCMP

subject left the residence prior to police attendance and the matter is under investigation for charges.

09:27 RCMP received a report of a person who had cut their wrists and is suicidal. Member located the subject and observed damage to their wrists. The subject was transported to the hospital.

12:03 Report of a 911 possible impaired driver. The vehicle was all over the road driving about 80 – 90 kph in a 100 kph zone. They were stopped and it was determined that the subject was not drinking and that they were just elderly.

13:00 RCMP attempted to stop a vehicle with no licence plate. The vehicle failed to stop but was stopped at a nearby farm. They had outstanding warrants and were arrested. The driver refused to provide a breath sample. Still under investigation.

21:55 Report of fraud on Kijiji. The caller sent an e-transfer to the suspect for a vehicle posted on Kijiji. Two complainants arrived at the residence where the car was and the house was empty.

The seller stopped replying to them.

Still under investigation.

September 30 19:51 Report of an intoxicated hitchhiker walking on the road. He was located by RCMP and was wanted for outstanding warrants and was arrested and lodged in a cell.

16:00 A RCMP member on patrol checked a licence plate. The driver of the vehicle is currently suspended.

Driving while unauthorized and an open liquor ticket was issued and the vehicle was seized for thirty days.

22:58 Report of a vehicle swerving in its lane. The driver held an out of province licence which showed restrictions to vehicle with interlock. The vehicle that was being driven did not have interlock and the vehicle was seized. A ticket was also given.

September 29 00:14 A complainant reported that his nephew took his vehicle to his house and stripped it for parts. The complainant is going to make a statement and the matter is still under investigation.

00:54 Report of a domestic assault. The

02:38 RCMP received a noise complaint coming from the golf course. RCMP attended and located four males playing loud music. The partiers were told to turn down their music and they complied.

07:31 Report of a semi-auto rifle being fired early in the morning. Members were in the area at the time for a previous call that was attended and the complainant felt that it might also have been fireworks but it was explained by the RCMP that it was the golfers using the course for an iron man tournament.

11:06 911 report of a female requesting RCMP. It was determined that the caller was assaulted by an ex-tenant. The extenant has been charged and released with conditions.

11:17 Report of a text message stating that the complainant can have everything in her will. RCMP attended and spoke with the subject who stated that she were not suicidal and did not want to harm herself.

16:00 A traffic stop yielded a smell of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The DL licence was destroyed and there were no grounds for charges.

During the week 3 false 911 calls, 4 alarm calls, and 94 calls for service were made in total.

Cultivating virtues Joe Machney Reporter The mind of the human being is like a radio receiver station and although not all that comes into it is translated and understood, all of it leaves its mark on the subconscious mind.

Keeping this in the conscious mind it is important to be vigilant about what you subject yourself to in your environment.

But there is more to it than that and you certainly do not have to see yourself as a victim of your environment. In every situation you find yourself in, realize that you have choice.

In past articles, I have talked about lenses and filters that have been placed in the mind and in turn over the eyes and ears which can block and actually distort the perception of certain aspects of the world that the person encounters. This is where self-awareness comes in and the virtues that are prevalent in all of the religions of the new world and also in the old world can help.

For the Lakota people there are twelve virtues, these are Humility, Perseverance, Respect, Honor, Love, Sacrifice, Truth, Compassion, Bravery, Fortitude, Generosity, and Wisdom. Each of these virtues is lenses or states of mind that we can choose to see and hear the world through. Doing this will make our world brighter and at the same time bring people into our lives to reflect the level of sincerity that we have when displaying these virtues. These are to better

yourself so that you will live a better life for yourself, and then be able to offer others the open door that you had the courage to walk through.

Humility is the first and most important step in embodying the truth that you are a spirit having a human experience. It is the opposite of pride. In terms of spirituality, if humility is ignored then the ego takes control and pollutes everything.

Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues.

Perseverance is about persisting in our efforts, which is a deeply empowering source of strength rising from within.

This is spiritual strength and shows us how much life is worth living.

Respect is tolerance towards all beings which includes plants and animals as well. All is spirit and all is one.

Honor. Being honorable means having strength of character by being a good person and living the virtues. To live the virtues it shows that someone has the integrity and dignity that makes up honor.

Love rules over all things. The whole universe exists because of love, it is the motive of all creation. It is not attachment because love can even be the incentive to be unattached.

Sacrifice is giving of oneself. The fruit of love is sacrifice. In order to accomplish anything, one must be able to make a sacrifice. Whether it be the small sacrifices in your daily life or major sacrifices of your lifetime, we all reap what we sow by this fundamental act.

Truth is being honest about yourself and the world around you. Through gaining an understanding of life we learn to see beyond the illusions into what is real for us. We all have our own individual perspectives, it is relying upon our own perception within the greater reality that allows us to be in truth.

Compassion is doing what is right in caring for others as you would for yourself is what makes a person compassionate.

One need not feel sorry for or sympathetic to anyone in order to live this virtue. In fact, it is that inner strength that allows us to have the unconditional love that creates true compassion.

Bravery is when an understanding of destiny matures within the mind and there is a dawning of faith within the heart. It is not blind or reckless and can come from the very depths of our being in times of need. This open act of vulnerability despite circumstances can help us defy even the worst odds.

Fortitude. After learning patience and inner endurance one gains the strength necessary to have fortitude. Emotional stability, being alert and having determination can help in having this persistent integrity.

Generosity is a timeless virtue residing in the heart. True generosity embodies love and the understanding of impermanence.

Wisdom is the final virtue. Wisdom is a reward from life for persevering through all of the virtues. With wisdom comes a natural serenity and an everlasting peace in one’s life.

RJV Gas Field Services is on the move

Submitted RJV Gas Field Services has recently purchased the former CMBS building and will be moving. Don Cherniawsky, CEO of RJV, said that renovations will be completed by the end of November and that they will start moving in shortly after and hopefully will be complete by the end of January.

Don said “it will be a lot more efficient having everything under one roof, and we’ll be able to take on more work. We

want to be the place where people want to work so that we can keep our young people employed in Vegreville.”

At present they have 92 employees and hope to increase that to 140 in the future. The business has picked up tremendously and right now the plant is booked till the end of November with staff working some 10 hour days and some even working on weekends.

Don said the old properties will eventually be put up for sale.

90 Years Ago – October 5, 1927

Hank Bender and Doc. Monkman, popularity known as the most expert chefs outside of New York, Paris, London and Old Vegreville, took on a real job Sunday when they cleaned up, cooked and served forty wild ducks which had been surrounded and slain under circumstances narrated hereafter. Twelve invited guests sat down to the feast, which was given in Larry’s bachelor’s quarters.

It is reported that the guests with one accord acclaimed Hank and Doc. as the world’s best cooks and awarded them half a dozen kingly crowns and champ belts.

Prior to the rain of the past week, some threshing had been done in the district with good returns. Glen Shaw got an average of 52 bushels per acre from No. 222 wheat on a three acre patch of breaking. Robt. Wilson’s wheat averaged 40 per acre on summerfallow; this being also the University whet, No. 222. Wm. Clements got 3,017 bushels of oats off 30 acres, an average of over 100 per acre. Other yields, where threshing was done at all, lined up well with these returns.

The Wartime Prices and Trade Board is taking steps to reorganize its ration system, the chairman, Donald Gordon, said this week. By enlisting local people with an intimate knowledge of community conditions, it is planned to set up local ration offices in the municipal buildings at some 500 centres across Canada.

50 Years Ago – October 5, 1967

The inspection of hospitals, schools, places of business and homes will take place during the month of October by the Vegreville Fire Department in their annual concerted campaign to keep citizens aware of the need of fire prevention. Practice drills are being held this week and next in the hospitals and schools where immediate evacuation plans must be kept constantly efficient.

Hundreds of Vegreville and district school children were on hand for the opening ceremonies of the Confederation Caravan which began its two-day stay in Vegreville on Wednesday. The program was chaired by Dr. L.M. Edmunds who introduced platform guests.

At the conclusion of the program Mayor John Koshuta officially declared the caravan open and the tour of the trailers began.

Farmers are finishing up tag ends of the 1967 harvest. Combining of cereal grains is virtually complete in all districts, leaving only flax to be threshed which is 25 to 50% completed, and should be all safely in store in about a week’s time.

25 Years Ago – October 6, 1992

At a meeting of Town Council it was decided the carpeting at the social center will be replaced. It was identified that for two consecutive years the carpeting within the social center required replacement. The existing carpeting is eight years old and is the same age as the building. The carpet will cost $7,386.86. Also since the carpeting will be replaced, council moved that the interior of the social center (excluding main hall area) be painted at a cost of $1894.

A fire in a field, west of Vegreville, on Wednesday, September 30 was started by a hay baler. Vegreville fire department responded to the call on Wednesday afternoon.

AGT United Way Campaign raised money for the local Crisis Association and also collected non-perishable food for the local food bank. The AGT volunteers held a hot dog sale and flea market on Friday, October 2. Other fundraising activities include a Christmas lights sale, an employee chili supper, and a stereo raffle.

The Vegreville Fire Department hosted a pancake breakfast on Sunday, October 4 to kick off fire prevention week. Many people attended the breakfast while members of the fire department cooked and served.

The First Bit of Kurdistan Gwynne Dyer The neighbours are very cross about Monday’s independence referendum in the Kurdish part of Iraq, which is currently known as the Kurdistan Autonomous Region (KAR). They can’t go on calling it that if and when it gets formal independence, and the leading candidate for the new name is “South Kurdistan”. Which is precisely what annoys the neighbours.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said that Baghdad will fight to prevent Kurdish secession, if necessary, and he has sent Iraqi troops to take part in joint exercises with the Turkish army on the KAR’s northern border. As for the Turkish government, President Recep Tayyib Erdogan is enraged by the referendum and warns that “this adventure can only have a dark end.”

Erdogan is threatening to shut off the pipeline that delivers Kurdish oil to the world and to stop exporting food to Iraqi Kurdistan. He accuses Masoud Barzani, the president of Iraqi Kurdistan, of “treachery”, and warns that “If Barzani and the Kurdish Regional Government do not go back on this mistake as soon as possible, they will go down in history with the shame of having dragged the region into an ethnic and sectarian war.”

Most of us were under the impression that that war has already been underway for six years, mainly in Syria, with Erdogan eagerly feeding the flames. But his interventions in Syria were just g in other people’s dabbling problems; an independent Kurdish state in norther Iraq, he northern think would be thinks, an existential threat to th Turkey itself.

because one-fifth of Turkey’s population is also Kurdish, and most of them live in the part of Turkey directly across the border from Iraqi Kurdistan. He is terrified that Turkey’s Kurds will catch the independence bug too.

That’s why the talk of “South Kurdistan” is so incendiary. Seen through Kurdish nationalist eyes, it is the first bit of a big, united Kurdistan: southeastern Turkey is “North Kurdistan”, southwestern Iran is “East Kurdistan” and north-eastern Syria is “West Kurdistan.”

The 30 million Kurds are one of the biggest stateless ethnic groups in the world, but giving them all a national state would require dismantling Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria. That’s why it has never happened.

Iran has just said that it too will close its border with Iraqi Kurdistan, and Erdogan is confident that Turkey can bring it to its knees: “It will be over when we close the oil taps, all their revenues will vanish, and they will not be able to find food when our trucks stop going to northern Iraq,” he said this week.

So why did Barzani hold the independence referendum now? Preliminary results suggest that it was hugely successful at home – a 91 percent “yes” vote on a 72 percent turn-out – but there’s going to be a big, ugly backlash from the neighbours, and the likelihood that anybody will actually recognise South Kurdistan’s independence is minimal.

Barzani’s motives are partly personal: he must step down before the elections scheduled for November, and he wants to stamp his own name on the independence project. But many Kurds would argue that there will never be a “good” time to go for independence, and that they must just push on and hope for the best. After a hundred years of oppression and division, you can see their point.

History of involvement and dedication to catholic beliefs I am happily married to my husband, Ken, and a mother of four. I’m proud to say all four of my children have attended and graduated from the Catholic school system. My family and I have never regretted the decision to attend St. Martin’s and St. Mary’s as each school has a special place in our hearts filled with wonderful memories.

A large part of my community involvement is volunteering and making the connection between the schools and the church. For years I have organized youth camps, intergenerational opportunities and found opportunities for youth to attend Catholic functions.

I have many years of experience in governance.

Currently I am the President of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada, past president of parent council, and worked 12 years in the Provincial government.

I hope that you see my goals as trustee as a reason to vote for me on October 16th.

Nicole Fried Submitted Alberta’s Youth Team did a fine job at representing Alberta in Brandon.

Congratulations to the following local youth for their success at the Canadian

Appaloosa Nationals in Brandon, Manitoba.

Shayleen Sawchuk and her horse Cash, Jessica Dixon and her horse Susie, Jayden Calvert and her horse, Cailey Slobodian and her horse Chance, Ava Fried and her horse Oscar, Brooklyn Slobodian and her horse Bubbles.

The competition was held at the end of July where the team competed in several different classes, including Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Hunter Under Saddle, Barrel Racing and Keyhole. The team brought home many national titles, with Top 5 and Top 10 placings. Our theme this year was Hockey Night in Canada.

Born to Mike and Michele Barter, Matthias moved with his family into the Lamont area at the age of 4 where he grew up among his 8 siblings.

Home schooled through to the end of high school, he took an interest in playing the guitar, and is self taught. His ability and talent grew during the years that he attended King’s University in Edmonton where he received a Bachelor of

CTF study: Who pays Canada’s income tax bill?

Aaron Wudrick CTF Federal Director In the midst of the debate over the federal government’s proposed tax changes, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today released a new study, Who Pays Income Tax? Based on the most recent CRA filing data available (2014), here are the facts about who pays income tax and in what proportions: In 2014, 27.5 million Canadian filed a tax return; 33% (9.1 million) paid no

income tax; 67% (18.4 million tax filers) paid all the federal and provincial income tax.

Those with incomes under $50,000 accounted for 86.4% of all tax filers and paid 13.2% of all federal income tax.

Filers between $50,000 and $99,999 represented 23.3% of all filers and paid 35% of all federal income tax.

Those with incomes at $100,000 and above represented 8.4% of all filers and

Every candidate was allotted three minutes to speak about their ambitions should they be elected. The speeches began with mayor candidate Tim MacPhee.

He talked about his dedication to the town and how he felt it was a safe and friendly community to raise his children. MacPhee spoke of his past volunteering as a hockey coach and a member of the Kinsmen club, as well as his four years as a town councilor. “I promised the citizens of this town four years ago that I would bring spending in line with other municipalities of our size,” MacPhee said. “I feel that I have accomplished that and I am happy with the results. I understand the manpower that it takes to take care of this town and I think our departments do a phenomenal job.”

He emphasized his determination to keep the CPC centre open and how he has relentlessly been calling and sending emails to the federal government as well as his attending an AGM in New Brunswick and talking with leaders there about the importance of having the federal government working with the rural communities. Always conscious of spending, “I believe in being accountable for every expenditure and making the best-informed decisions that we can,” Tim said. “I want to focus on creating new jobs with the businesses that we have here so that we may grow as a community.”

Seeking re-election as Mayor, Myron Hayduk began with thanking all the candidates for their interest in this town. After a bit about who he is, he talked about how proud he is to call Vegreville his home and how the past ten years on council and then his time as mayor has been. “As a councilor, I sat back and watched how things were run,” Hayduk said. “In the

second term, I tried to change some things which ended up in conflict. This changed my direction and I decided to run for mayor.”

“In the last four years we have accomplished a lot and have had many challenges, the hardest being the closing of the CPC,” Myron said. “A lot of people have given up on this but I have not. We are also, as a council looking at alternatives should it be relocated.”

Ann Waters began the speeches for the Town Council candidates. Her speech emphasized how much she cares about the town and how having lived in Vegreville her whole life, she raised her family here and wants to see future generations of her family proudly call Vegreville home. She let the audience know straight-away what she can offer them, and how she is available to them after hours to address their calls and concerns should she be elected. An adamant and diverse volunteer of many organizations, Ann accentuated her experience in the banking industry and owning a small business for the past 25 years and how that experience can help the community. A big focus of her campaign was on the need for a fully functional hospital and how if elected that will take priority for her.

“A lot has been done with our hospital over the last few years,” Ann said, “but we need more.”

She talked about her experience getting as far as way as she could from the community, Japan, only to find out that Vegreville was the community that she had been looking for all along. “I am so proud to come from this community and to represent and defend your interests as the voice of this rural community,” Taneen said. “My interests growing up were in politics and government. I love policy, I like making decisions, and I like listening to other people’s opinions, talking about it, debating it, and then coming to a decision.”

Having been on council since 2010, Taneen ended her speech by asking the audience that they continue to ask her to be their acting voice for the community of Vegreville.

“Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently claimed that ‘the middle class pay too much in taxes and the wealthiest don’t pay enough,” said study author Mark Milke. “The middle class could always use a tax break. But it is false to say higher income Canadians do not pay their fair share.”

“The CRA data shows the opposite: Six figure incomes make up less than one-tenth of all tax filers but pay almost 52% of all federal income tax and 54% of all provincial income tax,” continued Milke.

“The real numbers expose the lie that any Canadian should pay more,” said CTF Federal Director Aaron Wudrick.

“Before any tax hikes in 2015 and 2016, anyone earning more than $50,000 already paid a higher proportion of their income in federal and provincial taxes than those below that threshold.

How much more ‘fair’ do governments intend to get?”

Of note, with another data set from the federal finance department that totals taxes, fees and other revenues to all Canadian governments, the most recent statistics from 2015 show that general revenues to all Canadian governments amounted to 38.6% of GDP. In the 1970s, under Pierre Trudeau as Prime Minister for most of that decade, general revenues to government as a percentage of the economy ranged from 35.2% to 38.1% of the economy.

“In the 1970s at least, Pierre Trudeau’s era was a lower-taxed time than the Justin Trudeau era,” noted Wudrick.

Dude, Where’s My Car? Sgt Jerry Nutbrown RCMP Ponderings, Vegreville Detachment I apologize for using the title of a 2000 movie release, but it is appropriate for what is happening lately. There has been a steady increase of vehicle thefts in Alberta and lately, it has accelerated (pardon the pun). I do realize that this is not a comical matter but in some instances, it almost is.

We are having more vehicles being stolen lately and we are also recovering many stolen vehicles from other areas.

Thieves are getting more brazen with daytime thefts and entering buildings to get vehicles or keys. Recent incidents have brought to light pursuits of these vehicles regarding risk to the public. The best thing to reduce pursuits is to have less vehicles stolen.

I have written before about certain vehicles that are stolen over others, but no vehicle is safe if left running with the keys in it. The vehicles are typically stolen for parts, to use as a ride or to use in committing other crimes. So, we need the public to be protecting their own vehicles because I know you don’t want your K-car or El Camino being driven by someone who cares not for it. A lot of stolen vehicles are due to opportunity. We have had some taken locally merely

because they were left running as the driver went in somewhere for a quick minute. Preventing the theft of these vehicles is the easiest, secure your Hugo after parking it. What can you do to keep your Grand National in your driveway?

The cheapest theft deterrent, besides sleeping in your vehicle, is to use a steering wheel locking device. These lock on to your steering wheel making it impossible for someone to drive your vehicle. These devices are many, cheap and easy to use. They can be defeated but it would take some time so the thief is likely to move on to another vehicle. Another vehicle specific device is an alarm and these are self-explanatory. Another lesser known device is an immobilizer. There are various types and these require an installation. Different types of immobilizers work in different ways to prevent vehicle theft. Essentially there is something required to be present before the vehicle will start. This could be something like a small device on your key chain that is detected by another device under the hood and if the key chain fob is not detected, the engine won’t start even if hot-wired.

Some vehicle manufactures have their vehicles equipped as such from the factory but your Pacer won’t have it.

What we also see is thieves using garage door openers in parked vehicles to open garages and in many cases, this gives them access to the house and car keys. Keep your garage door openers out of sight and if you have a door between your garage and your house, lock it. Try and avoid hanging your vehicle keys inside your house door as that is just as convenient for thieves as it is for you.

There are other ways to keep your vehicle from being driven to Jasper without you than what I have mentioned here. Go on-line and take a look as this could help you better secure your vehicle. Sad we have to go to these lengths to secure our property, but these are the times we are living in.

Dear Classified Guys, I've been apartment hunting for a few weeks now. The apartments that I saw have been, shall we say, slightly less desirable than their ads. One advertised, "water views". But when I got there, I found that "water view" meant the balcony overlooked the neighbor's pool. Worse yet, the neighbor liked to sunbathe in the nude…and he wasn't an attractive man! Do newspapers police their classifieds for these types of ads or are we readers on our own?

• • • Carry: Your circumstance sounds like a bad TV show where the overweight nudist blocks a good view.

Cash: Although if you found the neighbor attractive, you might be asking us a different question like how to get invited to use the neighbor's pool?

Carry: Most newspapers are very careful about protecting their reputation. They typically take precautions to verify the information they print, including their classified ads.

Cash: Unfortunately, newspapers can't check out all items advertised in their classified section.

Carry: It sounds like your best chance to improve your apartment hunting is to ask a lot more questions on the telephone before you visit. Question exactly what the owner means by "water views" or ask about the square footage, room sizes, or amenities.

Cash: The more you know up front, the less there is to shock you when you meet the neighbors.

Anna (Palkun) Stefanik Jan. 20, 1924 – September 26, 2017 Anna Stefanik, a long-time resident of the Bruce community, passed away at the age of 93 years in Viking, Alberta, on Tuesday, September 26, 2017. Anna was born in Poland on January 20, 1924 to Sidor and Ksenia Palkun. The family immigrated to Canada in 1929 and settled on a homestead at McRae, Alberta. Married in 1942 to John Stefanik, together they raised their family on a farm that was purchased in 1945 east of Bruce where Anna resided until 2014. Anna leaves to cherish her memory: son Bill (Edna) of Bruce, Albert, son Ernie (Diane ) of Comox, B.C., son Donnie of Bruce, Alberta , son Walter (Alana) of Big Valley, Alberta and daughter Merrie Ann Jones (Bob) of New Norway, Alberta, along with 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren, and her sister Mary Henning of Mundare, Alberta and brother Walter Palkun of Boyle, Alberta. Anna was predeceased by her parents Sidor and Ksenia Palkun, husband John, sister Sylvia, Daughter Rose Marie.

A Funeral Service was held at the Bruce Community Centre, Bruce, Alberta on Monday, October 2, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with interment at the Bruce Cemetery, Bruce, Alberta.

Viking Funeral Services Ltd., Viking, Alberta HARRISON, Sister Patricia Catherine, SSMI 1917- 2017 Sister Patricia Harrison left us to meet her Lord at 11:00 a.m. September 29, 2017 at Mary Immaculate Health Care Centre, Mundare, one month after her 100th birthday.

Catherine (Sister Patricia) was born in McKim, Saskatchewan on August 29, 1917, daughter of Stephen and Thecla (nee Potrilecka). Catherine entered the Novitiate of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate in Mundare on January 9, 1937, taking the name Sister Patricia. She made first profession of vows on July 22, 1939, and final profession August 15, 1945. Sister Patricia received her Teachers’ Certification in Saskatoon, before entering the Congregation. She taught from her earliest years of formation until her retirement in 1966- a total of 28 years. She taught in Alberta (Mundare, Edmonton), Saskatchewan (Ituna, Saskatoon, Prince Albert), Manitoba (Winnipeg), and Ontario (Windsor, Toronto, Kitchener). Throughout her many years in the teaching ministry, she also touched many young hearts in the catechetical ministry, through sacramental preparation in the various parishes she served, youth ministries such as sodality, summer catechisms, and camps. Demonstrating her musical abilities as a violinist, even prior to entering, Sister Patricia later studied music formally, ultimately certifying as an Associate of Music in 1971 with the Conservatory of Western Ontario to teach piano. She used this skill to teach private lessons in Winnipeg, Ancaster, Toronto and Calgary, returning to Winnipeg for her longest stationing, from 1972-2001. In 1973, she also took studies in, and later also taught guitar. The teaching of music theory also always accompanied her practical lessons.

In all, she taught music for over 35 years.

Sister Patricia was predeceased by her parents, Stephen and Thecla; brothers, Bill, Peter, Henry and Nicholas; half-brothers, John and Mike; sisters, Jessie and Mary; half-sisters, Anne and Julia. She is survived and will be dearly missed by numerous nieces and nephews, and by the Sisters Servants. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate.

The last candidate of the evening was Dave MacDonald who spoke about the strong ties that he had developed with the community throughout all the years that he had been here. “In a way, Vegreville has become my family,” David said. “So long as I can remember working, I’ve wanted to be part of something greater than myself, when I was running a drilling rig offshore or when I was manager for Public Works.”

“I’ve always been about getting down to business and getting results and I’ll be taking that hardworking attitude to the table as councilor for the town of Vegreville,” Dave said. “I believe that is

what is needed to deal with looming threats like the possible closure of the Case Processing Centre.”

Dave feels that more attention should be given to workers who will be displaced should it close to pursue other opportunities that will keep them in town.

The evening closed with a question and answer period.

100 people coming in during the morning to help Chantelle Banack Alison Baronic, and Courtney Yakimetz celebrate their special day. Snacks and beverages were available throughout the day, helping the guests to feel even more relaxed and at home in the spacious salon.

“It was a good turn out,” Alison Baronic said.

“Everybody is loving the product brands.”

“We thank everybody for all of their support,” Courtney Yakimetz said, gratefully. “The community has been wonderful!”

Throughout the day, people came from Two Hills, Willingdon, Viking and as far away as Edmonton to see what the ladies have been up to. One guest mentioned that he felt that people with this type of drive and ambition are what got Vegreville started and that it was good to see this same tenacity in these young women.

“The guests are enjoying the new, modern, relaxed and fresh style of the open area,” Alison said. “There is a lot of spirit and aliveness here. I feel it is a really happy place to be and that translates well to the customers.”

During the day, they gave multiple gift baskets thanking the people of Vegreville. “Without everybody, we couldn’t be here, so thank you,” Courtney said. “All three of us really thank the community for their support.”

“We look forward to giving back to the community,” Alison concluded.

Tesolin said CNIB provides support and rehabilitation for individual with vision loss, as well as, their family and friends.

Losing your sight takes time to accept and it is a process.

However, 75% of vision loss can be

prevented through early detention and 9 out of 10 people do have some sight, they not always fully blind. Blind people are three times more likely to have difficulty

with daily living tasks and to experience clinical depression.

To relate to person with vision loss, identify yourself and then asked them if your assistance is required to make sure you are not stealing their power from them.

Respect them and don’t pet Program Lead, Community Education for their guide dog.

Initially, people socialized and indulged in a free delicious supper of hor d’ oeuves, refreshments, wine, and beverages.

After this, Board Chair, Gus Borzel presented his opening remarks where he said 2017 has been another interesting, challenging and rewarding year. “Our organization continues to grow by taking on new programs, upgrading properties to provide affordable and quality housing, and promoting education to our workforce among many other things.”

“Our staff continues to consistently step up to the education plate. Every course taken and completed has two benefits: making ourselves better and serving our clients with a higher quality of care,” Borzel said.

“This will be my final meeting on the board of VALID,” Borzel added.

Borzel then thanked all the management, board and staff.

After this, Director, Wendy Hopper presented the Election of the Directors of Board where she a nnounced t he Recommended Slate of Karen Streets presents the ‘Outstanding Community Nominees.

What they generated from observing VALID is the clients have good relationship skills.

The recognition award presentation was held then where Karen Streets presented the ‘Outstanding Community Employment Award’ to Chief Finance Officer, Sheila Lupul from the Town of Two Hills Administration Office for being a welcoming, responsive and inclusive employer.

Rangers steal game at home from Bandits Joe Machney Reporter The Vegreville Rangers played two exhibition games this past weekend, winning one at home with a score of 5 to 4 and losing the other in Lloydminster with a score of 5 to 1 as they took on the Bandits both games.

“The atmosphere was positive in Vegreville and there was a good turnout,” Coach Bryan Brown said. “There were four lines of three sets of defense, which is definitely what we need to play with going forward.”

Having done a bit of line switching around, Coach Brown made sure that he had the right players playing with the right people, and feels that this is a process that he’ll continue to be doing as the team moves forward into the 2017-2018 season.

They lost the second game they played on Saturday, but Brown feels that the reason for the loss was being short of players and injuries. “One of the players had a back injury and Josh Micklich broke his hand in the second shift, so he’ll be out for six weeks,” Brown said.

“He has big shoes to fill.”

Brown feels that he is slowly getting a team together and made some more cuts on Sunday. The Rangers are associated with the Calgary Mustangs, which he feels will be a big bonus for the organization. At the moment they need to wait for their final cuts to come through.

“At least one defense and one Junior A goalie will be released from that team,” Brown said. “Hopefully they’ll make it here. That option is open to them and we need good solid defensemen on our team that is

going to protect our net.”

Having released another goalie on Saturday, Coach Brown is down to one full-time goalie and an affiliate.

“We need new blood to make this a winning team in this town,” Brown said of the new goalies.

Focusing on the adage, ‘a fun team is a winning team’, Brown feels that if they’re winning then there’s great moral in the dressing room and that carries over onto the ice as well. “Everything continues to get better. The players play harder, the development is better, the atmosphere is better, and if the team is winning then the fans start coming out and it’s a win-win situation.

That is what we’re looking for,” Coach Brown concluded.

Rangers win at home but lose in double overtime on the road Joe Machney Reporter On September 29, the Vegreville Rangers took on the Vermilion Tigers during their season opener at home and won the game with a score of 7 to 4.

The first period was close with shots even after the first few minutes and penalties for both teams. There was a

close call in front of the Vegreville net, that would have g iven Vermilion the lead, but Young made the save.

This gave the Tigers more momentum and growl as they stepped up their game a bit.

Around the halfway point of the period, a scramble in front of the net caused the net to be knocked off its foundation and a questionable goal which was given to the Tigers. This caused the Rangers to increase their gameplay and number of shots on net and with a rebound the Rangers evened the score.

The Tigers quickly pounced back with

a goal to take a 2 to 1 lead. With a double power play in the Tiger’s favor, the Rangers did a great job killing the penalties. Down a man, the Rangers were still able to flex their muscles and get the puck between the posts to tie the game, ending the first period.

The second period opened with great saves by the Ranger’s netminder which gave them the momentum to get another

goal and to take the lead early in the period. The Tigers quickly tied it up, but the Rangers responded with another goal to take the lead. The second period was a bit rougher than the first with more penalties from both sides and lots of fighting.

The game changed in the Rangers favor as they scored a quick couple of goals before getting into fights to end the second period.

The third period was quieter with minimal penalties and another goal by both teams to end the Rangers season opener with a 7 to 4 win.

“I felt the game went well!” Coach Bryan Brown said. “We played well, skated well, hit hard, had lots of shots on the net, and came out with a win.”

“I was happy with how they played in Lac La Biche,” Brown said of the game Sunday game on the road at Lac La Biche. “We lost 6 to 5 in double overtime, but we came out flatfooted and short-handed and they took a 3 – 0 early lead. We played with our affiliate goalie, but we’ll have another goalie and three defensemen on October 4th. They did a 4 on 4 for 5 mins and at one point they got a penalty and we weren’t able to capitalize on it.

After that, it went down to a 3 on 3 and then Lac La Biche scored. I feel have some things to work on.”

Roberta Twerdochlib Our group has been playing cards every Tuesday for 12 years. We have eight regulars and six spares. On September 26 we had our wind-up party with a pot luck lunch held at the Lion’s Golden Villa in Vegreville.

Vegreville Fire Department Receives Donation Submitted The Vegreville Fire Department was extremely pleased with the donation they received from a locally,

community minded, business, RJV Gas Field Services.

The donation is a platform for training in the extinguishing of flammable fuel fires. Fire Chief Philip

Rowe said it is a welcome addition to our fire training.

The training platform is valued at $15,000.00.

What does the future hold for Bob Ashmead?

Joe Machney Reporter About 19 years ago a building came up on the market known as the old creamery.

“The price was reasonable, but the question was, what do I do with it?” Bob Ashmead asked as he reflected on that point in his life.

Having been unemployed at the time, the thought was to make it into a consignment store. So with some work from friends and suggestions on this new venture the store was opened in November 1998. “This worked well for about 9 years when to lessen the load of the paperwork we just made it into a second-hand store, brought in some music supplies, dabbled in some antiques, and bought auction items as well,” Ashmead said.

“At this point in my life I have found real satisfaction in helping people unload unused items that may have been destined to the landfill,” he explained. “But

the real joy comes when people come in and talk about the local history of the item they are selling, this building or to purchase something they only heard of and can’t live without. Over the years we tried to fill a need where something was not available in town.”

Bob did just that. When no one was servicing pellet stoves, he did it. The vacuum repair shop closed so he decided to fix vacuums. There was no place to buy music items so he filled that need, as well as for about 4 years it was a place for music lessons. “Last year we wanted to expand and offer an auction service to bring in a clientele complimentary to our store, but we’ll see if we can use our license in the near future,” Bob said.

At present things in Vegreville are very slow, so Bob only opens in the afternoons and plays music or repairs and shines up items, while waiting for a customer to examine all nine rooms and compliment his eclectic collection. “We love it when seniors come in,” Bob said

with a smile. “Some want to help out in some way by making a pot of coffee, snack on a cookie and some even tend the store when I have business away from the store.”

Like a hangout, Bob feels that over the years within the store walls he and his customers have solved all the world’s problems, but when the customer leaves nothing has really changed except that they both had a good chat.

VeggFest Donations Submitted The four groups received cheques for working the 50/50 Friday and Saturday night at VeggFest this year are: Vegreville Wildlife Federation, Vegreville Transportation Services Society, Vegreville School of Ukrainian Dance, and Heather Curling Club.

The Vegreville Golf Association received a donation from proceeds raised from vEGGfest. This organization worked alongside the Chamber of Commerce in the planning and execution of the event. They provided a great number of volunteers prior to, during set up and during the event.

Five Schools Terry Fox Walk

Rosanne Fortier Terry Fox’s dream of having hope and helping others walked on at the Five Schools Terry Fox Walk on September 28.

The walk started off with all participants meeting at the field of A.L. Horton School for a brief assembly. In the spirit of community and mentoring, each elementary class was paired with a secondary class to walk together.

M.O.D.E.L Project Success Coach, McKenna Makowecki welcomed everyone and said that they were walking to carry on Terry’s legacy and dream.

MLA Jessica Littlewood went to the stage then where she said she liked the stickers that stated who the people were walking for. “Today I will be walking for my fatherin-law who has been touched by cancer too. Unfortunately, cancer is something that hits a lot of families.”

Constable J. said Terry Fox is one of his heroes. “I encourage everyone to read about Terry Fox. People who knew Terry when he was alive said he was so modest.

Terry said everyone who walked with him was a hero just as much as he was. Terry was not a hero for what he did but for what he tried to do. We can all try to make the world a better place.

A.L. Horton’s, St. Martin’s, St. Mary’s, Vegreville Composite High and Next Step Schools started their walk then where they walked or ran from A.L. Horton to Vegreville Post Office, then to Vegreville Train Station, Vegreville Co-op and back to their school.

The federal government’s new $81 billion Phase 2 infrastructure plan recognizes that investing in local infrastructure unlocks productive potential for workers, businesses and community members. From expanding public transit, roads networks and water systems, to building more climate–resilient communities, to supporting the priorities of rural, remote and northern communities - designed and delivered right, this commitment can build a better Canada and a better Vegreville. “FCM has a critical year ahead to consolidate gains made for municipalities in Budget 2017 as the upcoming Integrated Bilateral Agreement negotiations for Phase 2 spending gets underway between the federal government, provinces and terri-

tories,” said Rudyk. “Key to moving transformative projects forward, we’ll need to see full and fair costsharing by all orders of government.”

Also on the agenda was the upcoming National Housing Strategy. Budget 2017 set aside $15 billion to support the Strategy – the first of its kind in over 20 years - but the details of how that funding will be rolled out are critical.

“The National Housing Strategy has the potential to transform Canada’s housing system, but the federal government needs to get this right. That means focusing on fundamentals, not quick fixes. That means repairing social housing so vulnerable Canadians won’t see their homes shuttered. That means leveraging our local expertise to build new affordable homes that fit long-range community plans. This is the message we’re driving home,” added Rudyk.

In March 2017 Rudyk was appointed to Alberta Urban Municipalities Association Board representing Towns East. At the June FCM conference, Taneen was elected to represent Alberta on the national scene. Tough enough to talk about it Rosanne Fortier It is a sign of strength to ask for help if you are feeling depressed. There is no cost to access help from Alberta Health Services. We need to get conversations started in a caring way. These were some of the facts that were stated at the free session, ‘Tough Enough to Talk about It’ at VegMin on September 29.

The session began with a free breakfast which was sponsored by TD Canada Trust.

Following this, Mental Health Promotion Facilitator for AHS, Neil Harris said one in three Canadians in their lifetime and 21.4% employees in the workforce will experience mental health issues. Hence, the workplace needs safety and support.

Everyone’s life is like a rollercoaster, they experience both good and bad.

Women and men usually handle stress and anxiety differently; women cry or talk about it which helps them feel relieved while men were taught to tough it up. If men do this and don’t get support, their feelings grow inside and they can get angry, moody, and isolate themselves or have an increase in substance abuse.

“Suicide is a preventable death. When someone is thinking about suicide they don’t want to die, they just want their pain to end. We should ask someone if they are thinking about suicide as this will not prompt them to do it; they will feel like a weight has been carried off their shoulders and get help,” Harris said.

A video shown said in Alberta, suicide is the highest cause of injury death.

Warning signs of depression are changes in character or behavior, low energy level, a negative attitude. People at risks for mental health problems have no patience and a short temper,

withdraw from you or others and have no interest in socializing, alcohol or drugs might be used as a way to cope, lack of sleep or sleeping too much, a change in eating habits and they might act impulsively or take risks. There are many other signs to look for.

The most essential thing is to be a sympathetic listener and not to give advice to a depressed person and connect them with a professional helper and listener. Encourage them not to give up!

Find a counselor they have a good connection with.

For everyone’s mental health and to deal with stress, they need to make sure they have rest and downtime, try not being around negative people, getting exercise and fresh air, get involved in a hobby or activity they enjoy, take deep calming breaths, talk to someone they trust about what is happening, stretch and relax their muscles, set their priorities and say no or ask others for help, eat healthy and get plenty of water, get plenty of sleep, do acts of kindness, and find balance.
