It has been a busy fall for Vegreville Composite athletics.

Adrienne Mills VCHS Junior High Athletic Director VCHS has run 6-man football, two cross-country teams, senior high golf and five volleyball teams since the beginning of the year!

Six-man football ran for a second season, with the number of players participating nearly doubling! In only their second year in the league, the team advanced to the first round of playoffs! It was a tremendous season of growth, led by coaches Bryan Worobec and Glenn Brophy.

Cross country saw 14 athletes from junior and senior high participate in three separate meets this year. Nearly all runners achieved personal best times, and we look forward to seeing them all back next season! A season highlight was having 3 top 10 finishers at EIPS zones, for the Jr High team! Big thanks to coaches Adrienne Mills and Chandra Henry.

Senior High golf competed in the zone playdown at Whitetail Crossing on September 16th. We are thankful to Mr. Warawa for reviving the program, as we did

RCMP files from November 18 - 24 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser November 18 14:58 – Report of trespassing. A call from a landowner who indicated that someone was hunting on his land without permission. There was a truck about ¼ mile into the field. Members attended and it was discovered that there had been a miss-communication between the landowner and his renter.

15:15 – Complainant attended the detachment to report finding a white container on the street in Vegreville.

It was turned in and members tested the contents which tested positive for methamphetamine.

20:21 – While investigating a disturbance complaint at a residence in Vegreville, members learned that the subject of the complaint had warrants out of Edmonton. The individual was arrested on her warrants and then later released on a $500 no-cash bail with documents for court in Edmonton.

November 19 08:51 – Call from a farmer near Ranfurly.

He indicated that he believed he was missing pigs from his “sounder of swine”. He indicated that he was reporting for information purposes only but felt that he knew the person responsible.

09:31 – Traffic enforcement resulting in approximately 13 speeding tickets (one was $357 for going 150 kmph in a 110 kmph zone) as well as a no insurance card.

15:36 – While on patrol, a Community Police Officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop in a rural area. The vehicle refused to stop and both Vegreville and Two Hills RCMP responded to assist.

The vehicle stopped when it had a mechanical problem. The driver fled into the field on foot. Members set up a perimeter and brought in a K-9 officer for tracking. The trail was lost and it is believed that the subject had been picked up. It was confirmed that the vehicle was stolen and the investigation is ongoing.

November 20 04:09 – Break and enter to a Vegreville business. 2 suspects entered and proceeded to steal specific items. The investigation is ongoing.

06:01 – Mr. Traffic called to report multiple issues. The first was multiple vehicles driving on the highway without winter tires who were travelling 50 kmph and following too close.

09:32 – Report of a red Chevy truck pulling a black dump truck who was “driving like an idiot”. The vehicle was last seen driving eastbound on Birch

Avenue in Vegreville. Patrols turned up negative.

10:47 – A female attended the detachment to report ongoing domestic violence. An investigation was conducted and the subject was arrested and charged with 2 counts of assault and 1 count of assault with a weapon. They were later released with documents for court and appropriate conditions.

15:36 – Report of mischief and possible theft from a mailbox in Vegreville.

The mailbox was broken into and mail may have been taken. Under investigation.

17:05 – Traffic enforcement resulting in around 13 speeding tickets and one driver with no operator’s license.

18:01 – Members received a call regarding the subject from the 10:47 call who had been released. The subject was calling the complainant which was breaching his release conditions.

Members attended the residence and when the subject called, they answered the phone. They proceeded to locate and arrest the subject for breaching his conditions. He was later released on a $500 no-cash bail.

November 21

08:36 – Report of a stolen wallet.

The complainant was later contacted by a business in Vegreville. After retrieving her wallet she discovered that the wallet was missing cash and cards. Under investigation.

09:01 – Report of a car hitting a house. Members attended along with EMS. The investigation revealed that one vehicle had failed to yield at an intersection and struck another vehicle and pushed it into the house. No one was hurt and the driver of the first vehicle was charged with failing to yield.

09:45 – Report from a rural residence of 2 suspicious males driving a white SUV who claimed to be looking for scrap metal. The complainant told them to leave. A license plate was provided, but did not return any results.

16:22 – Traffic enforcement resulting in 12 traffic violation tickets.

November 22

06:51 – Report of a black Ford truck in the ditch at a rural intersection. The delay was 1 hr and 20 min. Members attended, but the vehicle was gone. The caller indicated they reported it because of rural crime in the area. *** The police need better information to work with. License plate, pictures, VIN etc. are of great help.

10:25 – Traffic enforcement resulting in approximately 21 tickets being issued.

14:02 – Report of mischief to a com-

mercial property in Vegreville. Under investigation.

14:26 – Report of the neighbours cows coming on to the complainant’s property and damaging hay bales. The complainant was referred to the Provincial Brand Inspector and the RCMP Livestock Inspector. *** Vegreville Members were unable to charge the moo cows with fraudulently obtaining food or lodging.

15:04 – Report of a break and enter at a residence. The complainant believes that her son who she kicked out broke into the home. It was reported that there was food missing and water on the bathroom floor.

23:20 – While on patrol, members witnessed a vehicle failing to yield for a pedestrian at a marked intersection. A voluntary penalty of $155 was issued to the driver.

November 23

08:15 – Report of a truck that pulled into a farm yard and parked beside a barn.

When the property owner approached the vehicle, the driver was sleeping. The driver woke up the driver who was incoherent when speaking with the property owner. The property owner blocked the exit from the property, but the subject of the complaint proceeded to slowly ram his truck. It then backed away and drove across the front lawn and through a fence to leave.

Members attended but were unable to intercept. The truck is black or dark grey Ford F250 or F350 welding truck.

The plate was stolen out of Maidstone Sk from a similar white truck. The suspect is described as Caucasian male, 40’s with tattoos on hand, neck and arm. Surveillance being reviewed and the matter is under investigation.

November 24

19:29 – While on patrol, a member of the Two Hills detachment observed a Chevy Colorado swerve, leave the roadway and strike a tree. Vegreville RCMP, EMS and Fire attended, the driver was extracted from the vehicle but did not sustain any serious injuries. It was determined that road conditions were a factor.

During the week there were 132 calls for service made in total including: 1 false alarm, 2 false 911s, 5 animal strikes and 64 tickets from traffic enforcement.

Wanda Keller is a resident of Heritage House who greets everyone with a hello and a friendly smile.

Wanda was born in Victoria, British Columbia in 1959 where she only lived there for eight months as her father had to find work so her family chose to move to Alberta. Her father was a jack of all trades.

They moved to Calgary where Wanda’s mother and father had another daughter as well as a son. Wanda’s earliest memory was when she was about three years old

and she and her sister were in the basement and they were bored one day. So, they found 18 dozen eggs. They broke everyone of these eggs and cracked them and then they scrambled them in a large silver bath tub. As a result, they both got a good spanking. Wanda laughed when I told her; this would have been a useful project for a large restaurant.

Later, Wanda’s parents divorced and her mother remarried in 1967. Wanda’s mother gave birth to another girl whom Wanda is nine years her elder. Wanda is very fond of

Quebec Karma Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser - Opinion

Karma has no menu. You get served what you deserve.

During the height of the pipeline debates in Canada, Quebec was quite vocal about its opposition to pipelines. Despite Newfoundland needing (and wanting) Alberta oil to refine and having port capacity to increase shipping, Quebec stood firm on their opposition to what their Premier referred to as “dirty energy”. Newfoundland would have benefited greatly from the Energy East pipeline but Legault stated that there was no social acceptability in the province for oil pipelines. I wonder if he knows where propane comes from.

Now with the CN rail strike entering its 2nd week, the Canadian economy is feeling the pressure. Some parts of Canada are being impacted more than others with some companies having to shut down operations and lay off workers while the economy grinds to a halt. During the strike, CN is running at about 10% capacity and prioritizing perishables over things like grain, oil and one thing that Quebec needs... propane.

For those who are unfamiliar with how unique Alberta is, we are an anomaly in oil and natural gas production and distribution. In Alberta you usually have natural gas piped to your home. In other parts of Canada, this is something people have only heard of. While Alberta produces 69% of Canada’s natural gas, 98% of all natural gas produced in Canada is from the west.

Alberta is also a world leader in pipeline technology.

This unique position makes it equally hard for westerners to understand how a rail strike could put a province like Quebec at risk. The tightened rail capacity is creating one of the most critical things for Quebec as we enter winter. Propane. Unlike our natural gas distribution system, Quebec imports propane via rail (85%) and truck to heat everything from hospitals to greenhouses to grain dryers.

A few days into the CN strike Premier Legault stated that Quebec was within days of running out of propane. Sounds like poor planing to me but they instituted rationing in order to ensure they could keep heat in their hospitals, farms and nursing homes along with other critical infrastructure. At the same time he urged Ottawa to push for a resolution to the strike. As of publishing, a tentaive deal has been reached to end the strike action and work is set to resume Wedenesday at 6:00am local time.

Not to be one to miss an opportunity, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney passed a message on to Premier Legault. “We have technology that could guarantee you constant, stable access to propane and other fuels, they’re called pipelines.”

Imagine that. The one thing that could save anti-pipeline Quebec from freezing in the dark is the same thing that they so vehemently oppose. Disney couldn’t have written a better story to teach a life lesson.

While I have gone on record many times suggesting we should shut off all the oil and gas shipments for a month (or 6) and let the east freeze in the dark, at least one Alberta company doesn’t agree. Pembina Pipeline has extended an olive branch to Quebec and announced Sunday that it is making plans to send 105 rail cars loaded with Alberta propane to Quebec. A grand gesture to help “fellow Canadians”.

There are so many great quotes on Karma. I can only think that this current situation will inspire one about Quebec Karma.

At the very least, we can expect a few good memes.

Vegreville RCMP Seek Suspects

RCMP Alberta Media Relations Submitted November 20, 2019 Vegreville RCMP seek to identify suspects involved in a coin/card machine theft.

On November 11, 2019 at approximately 3:55 a.m. two individuals stole the coin/card machine from the Spotless Car Wash in Vegreville. The suspects removed the machine using a green GMC or Chevrolet truck, and a tow strap. The suspects made off with the machine, which was later located northwest of Vegreville. The individuals were fully covered but surveillance shows one wearing dark clothing, and the other in camoflauge.

90 Years Ago – November 13, 1929

The new school in Willingdon was officially opened on Saturday afternoon. A short musical program had been prepared by Mr. Kostash, the principal, and his staff. Harry Johnston had disposed of his implement business at Willingdon to S. Ewasiuk.

Mr. J. Armitage is now managing the Alberta Pool elevator while Mr. Burnett is in Edmonton, where he recently underwent an operation for appendicitis.

Mr. T. Beaupre has been transferred to Mundare, where he will take up his duties in the C.N.R. station. Mr. Donalds of Mundare, will fill the position vacated by Mr. Beaupre.

Constable C.E. Hay arrived in Vegreville on Tuesday to take up his duties in the local detachments of the A.P.P. Harry Johnston has disposed of his implement business at Willingdon to S. Ewasiuk. Mr. Johnston spent a few days here with his family and has now gone to Jasper to give a hand in finishing the hospital there. He has joined the C. Gordon staff as electrician.

Constable Radcliffe of the A.P.P. received word on Saturday that he had been transferred to the Edmonton detachment, and he left on Monday evening’s train to take up his duties there.

75 Years Ago – November 8, 1944

The Boys Scouts in Ranfurly did their “good deed” when they went out on a Halloween drive to help out with the Milk-for-Britain Fund. They collected twelve dollars and seventy five cents before going to their Halloween Party which the teachers of the school had arranged for the scholars.

Word was received this week by Mrs. Hantiuk that her husband, Super Nicholas James Hantiuk died on November 3rd, as the result of wounds received in action that day. Nick Hantiuk was very well known in town, having pursued his trade as a painter for several years here. He was very well liked and his death is regretted.

Some farms have been changing hands in the district lately. Mrs. Charles Burkholder, after holding her land since homestead days, (probably 45 years or more), sold her farm one mile east of Warwick. In the same vicinity, Herb Burkholder disposed of his quarter section to Dave Fugh of Warwick. W.T. Crombe of Vegreville, sold a 180 acre farm, close to Lavoy, to Mr. Ford Jr., of Lavoy.

From all the fighting fronts of Canada’s war, a group of men and women of the Canadian services have returned to the Dominion to take up new duties or to undergo treatment for wounds or disabilities suffered across the Atlantic. Soldiers, sailors and airmen were in the large movement, with the khaki-clad contingent predominant. Members of the women’s branches of the fighting forces coming back home after service in Britain were included in the arrivals.

50 Years Ago – November 13, 1969

Veterans of the First World War formed the guard of honor at the Cenotaph on Tuesday during the laying of wreaths which included Frank Fane, Dick Hoggins, Floyd Shaw, John Ziegler, Chester Lowe, George Erickson, Peter Sabot, Ken Ferguson, and Wes Headrick.

About four more hours of work on Sunday would see the oat field of Peter Samoil cleaned up by the old method of Bundle teams and threshing machine. A good quality sample was being obtained and it was dry. Assisting with the work of pitching bundles were a group of fellows from Saddle Lake. Mr. Samoil uses both methods of harvesting and says that by far the better crop is taken from a stoked field.

Theresa Sachkiw, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Con Sachkiw of Mundare, was awarded the Queen Elizabeth Prize for academic honours in Dietry Technology at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. At present Theresa is interning at the Red Deer General Hospital in Red Deer.

Flying instructor Joe Mohr was welcomed by Lou Kroeger on behalf of the Vegreville Flying Club. Mr. Mohr has twelve students under instruction here now. Target for completion of the course is before Christmas.

Pitch black smoke poured from a burning truck as its load of road oil went up in flames on Monday. The truck was engaged in oiling work on Highway 16 when it burst into flames and was demolished.

No one appeared to be injured in the mishap.

25 Years Ago – November 16, 1994

A new director is in place at the Immigration Department’s Vegreville Case Processing Centre. Phil Pirie, who’s worked for the department for 24 years, took charge of the centre.

Vegreville Town Council will give the local RCMP detachment a grant for its charity ball. But the decision was far from unanimous.

Council passed a motion to donate $250.00 to the event by a 4-3 margin.

How to reform Alberta’s energy regulation Less red tape and shorter decision timelines would improve Alberta’s investment environment and free up AER’s resources

Steven Globerman and Jairo Yunis The Fraser Institute In September, Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage announced a formal government review of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and replaced the AER’s board of directors with an interim panel.

AER’s mandate is governing structure and operational practices in the industry.

Since the announcement, several independent investigations found that senior members of the AER misused funds to set up a private international training centre for regulators to create future for-profit work for the AER’s then-CEO. While these allegations of misuse of public money and conflict of interest raise serious questions about government oversight of the agency, there are also more fundamental issues to consider. In particular, what are the AER’s guiding principles and how should they be implemented?

Considering the regulator’s key role in Canada’s energy industry, and the current state of the industry, which is watching investment and companies such as Encana fleeing south, it’s crucial that the government of Premier Jason Kenney get the AER reforms right.

In 2015, shortly after it assumed responsibility as the sole energy regulator in Alberta, the AER consulted with experts at the University of Pennsylvania to create principles and procedures worthy of an “excellent” regulator.

For the most part, the AER adopted the recommendations of the experts, and the regulatory mandate it embraced is broadly consistent with literature on regulatory reform. However, as

noted in a new Fraser Institute study, there are some notable missing features.

If adopted, those features would go a long way toward making the AER an excellent regulator – something it currently is not.

First, and perhaps foremost, the AER should initiate a regular and ongoing process of eliminating non-functional regulations. In other words, cut the needless red tape – regulations that no longer serve a social purpose or that duplicate regulations enforced by other agencies (including the Canadian Energy Regulator, formerly known as the National Energy Board).

Since the incentives of regulators are typically inconsistent with reducing red tape, the government of Alberta should oversee the process and implement a system that incentivizes the AER to identify and abandon non-functional regulations.

The AER should also formally commit to make decisions about proposed energy projects in a timely manner. And the provincial government should hold responsible both the AER board of directors and senior managers for any undue delay in the evaluation of proposed development projects.

Clearly, the current process is not working like it should. For example, the oil well-licensing process for “non-routine applications” is up to 130 days longer in Alberta than in British Columbia, up to 148 days longer than in Saskatchewan and up to 190 days longer than in major oil producing jurisdictions in the United States.

It’s therefore not surprising that according to a survey of oil and gas investors, 70 per cent of respondents cited the high cost of regulatory compliance in Alberta as a deterrent to investment

The Beaver County 4-H Multi Club has begun in its third year of 4-H in Holden, with more members and more projects, including the new business entrepreneur project in which there are 11 members. The other projects include small engines, heifer, sheep, swine, horsemanship and carcass beef.

Town Hall Meeting on Crime Arthur Beaudette The Vegreville News Advertiser On Tue s d ay November 19, 2019, the Vegreville RCMP hosted an open house at the Vegreville Social Centre to report to the community on the status of policing in the communities our police force is responsible for. The audience was addressed

by Terry Hyggen, the Detachment Commander of the Vegreville RCMP. Other members of the detachment were on hand as were CPO Ken Podoborozny and Fish and Wildlife Officer Mike Hewitt.

Staf f Sergeant Hyggen started off by expressing to the small gathering that he understood the concerns and frustrations people had for their families and property. He added that he and his members shared those concerns and frustrations and wanted to find solutions to these problems together.

2 categories (persons offenses and other criminal offences), Vegreville ranked above the provincial averages. For the category of property offenses the ranking was 5% below that of Alberta. In other metrics, the Vegreville detachment was on par or performing better than average, sometimes by a wide margin.

One of the most unsettling stats shared was that of the “Police to Population” ratio.

This is the measure of the number of members compared to the population they serve.

This was broken down into “municipal” or resources paid for by the Town of Vegreville and “provincial” or those resources paid for by the province. For the Town of Vegreville, the ratio is 687 people to every officer (K Div

Historian, Peter McArthur Reveals his Life History Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Henday Historian & genius, Peter McArthur was born in Viking, Alberta in 1938 and he still resides there. In his early years, he grew up with seven brothers and two sisters, all living in town. Peter’s earliest memory was when he was nine months old and a family friend was putting this blue paper on the wall. This

exact words but I remember some of what Churchill said” commented Peter.

Peter mentioned that they weren’t always paid for their work and when they were, the money went to Peter’s mother.

Peter found school easy. He had a few friends but they didn’t have much time for playing. If there was a chore they had to do, that came before having fun.

friend used to make his own glue for the wallpaper so he would go into the kitchen and put the glue from the pot on the stove on the paper.

Peter said he grew up in town but he spent a lot of time on the farm at his uncle’s place. Peter grew up during World War II when there was a shortage of people to do labor. So, he helped carpenters and did what ever needed to be done around town since he was a very young lad. Peter recalls helping to shingle the first wartime house in Viking.

Peter admitted as far as having money goes, his family was as poor as what people could be but they never considered themselves to be poor. “We had everything we needed and we were always happy. We had plenty of food and we wore second and third go around clothing which were sometimes full of patches but it never bothered us,” Peter said with a chuckle.

They made their own toys and didn’t have time to play games. Peter’s father was run over by a truck the year Peter was born and he was smashed up bad. He had a bad back and wasn’t able to do much but he had a good head on his shoulders. So, Peter’s dad sold second-hand parts for farm machinery. Peter and his brothers used to dismantle these parts from the time they were very young doing their part to help.

Peter said he remembers the day Pearl Harbor was hit and when Churchill told the allied forces in a speech on the radio that they were going to fight them on the water, on the air, and on the ground and never surrender.

Peter left school after he finished grade eight leaving to work in a seed cleaner for three years in the winter time in Saskatchewan. In the summer of 1954, he worked on a farm in Saskatchewan. Then in the summer of 1955, he worked on the pipeline. In 1958, he got into plumbing/electrical work where he even built water wells. Peter did many types of work in his lifetime and admitted to having two or three jobs at the same time for most of his life.

Peter knew his wife since he was a kid because she grew up on a farm west of Viking but they never got together until the year 1962. That was when Peter was working at various electrical jobs and his wife was taking a course in Edmonton every day and Peter was her driver. During this time, the couple grew closer to each other.

His wife and he got married in 1962 and they had four children. They got along fine and were both very busy during the marriage but still found time to do square dancing and to travel taking a few cruises together.

In 1975, Peter pursued real estate work where he landed up being awarded third place in the prairie region in Canada Trust one year.

Peter and his wife separated and then later divorced.

Since then, Peter found a companion and lived common law for 17 years. Peter has eight grandchildren.

Peter did plenty of work in genealogy and despite his many jobs and big family, he even found time to volunteer. Peter took care of his mother during her senior years and is the author of the book, ‘Pearl of the West’.

Today, Peter’s health is good. He credits this to keeping busy. His advice is if you want to have a good life; don’t get too upset about silly things in life because this will just destroy a person.

On October 25, Two Hills 4-H District (Myrnam, Willingdon and Two Hills) hosted a ‘Bring a Friend Night’ at the Two Hills School gym. With over 50 friends and family members attending the successful event. The evening was filled with games, making scarecrows, making a Halloween craft and enjoyed delicious snacks. Thanks to the Willingdon 4-H Multi Club for organizing this great evening.

Loss comes in many forms, whether it be a loved one, a pet, a job or loss of community as we relocate to a new city or town. It can be particularly difficult to cope with these losses during times when others seem happy and upbeat. Christmas can be one of these times.

Whether you identify as Christian or not, the decorations, gift-giving, hearing others talk of spending time

with family and the perceived and unspoken pressure to be “happy” and “in the Christmas spirit” may leave us feeling sad and alone.

Although we all cope with grief in different ways, it has been shown that connecting with others can help offset our feelings of loneliness and isolation when they arise. It is with this in mind that Akasu Palliative Care, Park Memorial Funeral Home and the Vegreville Ministerial

Even though there is a disparity between Vegreville and Rural staffing, it does not mean that if there is a member attending to an issue in Mundare that another member who technically would be a “municipal” resource would not attend to something in Ranfurly. The detachment operates as a team to police the entire area they are responsible for. However, the lack of bodies cannot be discounted and does result in members being stretched thin at times, especially when considering the large coverage areas that all rural police forces must service.

The audience was also informed of some of the Initiatives that the Vegreville Detachment is involved in. These

Dear Editor I seldom write letters to the newspaper, but after attending the Lakeland REA Annual General Meeting on November 6, 2019, I feel that perhaps my opinion might matter.

Although my husband, Irvin, was Secretary Treasurer of the Lavoy Rural Electrification Association for many years, the meeting on November 6th was, I believe, for first REA meeting I ever attended. I have to say I was shocked and saddened by the lack of respect shown to those who attempted to acquaint the audience with the advantages of keeping the Lakeland REA operating.

Many of us were at first unaware of the reason for the insistent motion to bring New Business to the beginning of the meeting rather than in the order according to the Agenda – which we had all received.

The reason became clear when probably half the audience got up and left the hall as soon as the motion to conduct a series of Special General Meetings before December

include the habitual offender management program where members proactively check on these offenders with the ultimate goal of preventing them from re-offending, drug projects which resulted in 10 people charged with trafficking so far in 2019 (all were released by the courts), education with school resource officer Cst Lappa servicing Vegreville and Mundare schools and providing information and support with bullying, vaping, drugs etc. and other projects they are working on.

There are also community initiatives that the RCMP are supporting including Citizen’s on Patrol, Rural Crime Watch and others.

S/Sgt. Hyggen relayed the fact that most areas of crime have remained relatively stable with the exception of break and enters and vehicle thefts. Property crimes have increased and these areas are being addressed most aggressively by the Vegreville Detachment and K Division Initiatives.

Hyggen also conveyed one item from another town hall he attended where Solicitor General Doug Schwietzer spoke and described the Justice System as “broken”. While not news, this clearly bothered everyone in the room.

Following his presentation, Hyggen fielded questions from the audience.

Despite the group in attendance being small, they were engaged and passionate. Some wanted to voice an opinion, others ask questions and there were those offering to help. Citizen’s on Patrol was talked about as was the theme of accountability, both on the side of those breaking the law and the Justices of the Peace and Judges (the question was bluntly asked – ‘who is holding Judges accountable?’). One audience member asked about the rights of citizens to protect their property and families and another asked about how to get the message to Alberta Justice that we are not happy with the current state of our justice system.

As the meeting came to a close, Mayor Tim MacPhee shared a few words. Many people stayed for a while longer to talk amongst themselves and to members of law enforcement in attendance.

Grandparents and Me Bonds Generations

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Grandparents usually have a special relationship with their grandchildren as they have plenty of time to spend with them and can tell stories from generations ago. Vegreville and Area Parent Link Centre (PLC) offered another opportunity for grandparents to do interesting activities with their grandchildren when they presented the Grandparents and Me program on November 23.

This program featured a scavenger hunt

around the centre where children had to find cards with pictures of different types of fruits on the card. From there, the children put these types of fruits on their own fruit pizzas. After this, Programmer for PLC, Litania Holyk read the children a story about grandmothers.

Grandmother to Connor and McKinley said she enjoys this program because it gives her a chance to spend even more time with her grandkids.

This program was followed by Pancakes and Play which all parents and children could attend.

Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, A few months ago I stumbled upon a great deal on a riding lawn tractor. I already had one, but I hate to pass up a good deal. It was an older model in terrific shape and only $175. I bought it, used it a few times and then put it in the shed. I had forgotten about it until my neighbor stopped over and asked to borrow my tractor because his broke.

Remembering the spare, I offered to sell it to him for the same $175 I paid. He was thrilled to get it at first, but then the problems started. In the first week, one of the tires went flat.

Then, a couple days later, he mentioned the clutch was slipping. That was followed by the electrical system that drained the battery. Last week I saw him riding a new one around the yard and when I waved and shouted, "hello", he didn't wave back. He appeared to be ignoring me, probably because of the tractor. I didn't sell him a lemon.

I was just trying to help him out.

Cash: If for some reason your neighbor is holding a grudge, you will need to discuss it if you want to resolve the friendship. Try explaining that it worked when you used it and you didn't know about any of the issues he encountered. Most disagreements are caused by simple misunderstandings.

Carry: It is possible that the issues were a result of the tractor being stored for a period of time or maybe they didn't surface until it was used significantly more.

Cash: In any case, it's best if the two of you can work out any animosity. After all, you never know when you'll need to borrow his mower!

KELLER - CONTINUED from PAGE 3 her half-sister and admitted she considers her to be fully biologically related to her. “I was eight years old when my parents divorced and this was like being in hell for me as my step-father had a daughter and a son before he married my mother and when his children got into trouble, my sister and brother would get blamed for the trouble the other kids got into and my mother wouldn’t do anything. I believe my mother didn’t have the confidence to stand up to my step-father. This was hard on me because I felt so protective of my brother and sister. I didn’t think what he was doing was fair.”

They lived on a farm when she was young which was close to Pincher Creek.

Wanda really enjoyed living there and being in the country.

Wanda was an average student at school where her favorite subject was math. She had a few close friends who

she hung around with a lot.

After she finished school, Wanda worked at housekeeping and she was a cashier in a parking lot.

Wanda dated a man for many years but she never got married.

Wanda’s hobbies are knitting and crocheting, socializing, and she used to go out a lot but it is difficult to go out now with the walker she has to use.

Wanda admitted that she is always cheerful because she wants to pass on a positive attitude and happiness to everyone she encounters.

The advice she would give people is to do what you like to do and be happy. Don’t say you would like to do this or that and then not do it.

Go for what you want. Be kind to other people as we don’t know what tomorrow or even today will bring.

She finds the staff at Heritage House to be good and she has her favorite residents.

Ladies Curling 2019-2020

Jane Tennant Submitted Curling season has commenced and I am staring into the 55th year of consecutive years of curling in the Vegreville Ladies Curling Club and the Heather Curling Club, 1965 to 2020. In previous years I curled two nights a week in the Ladies league and one night in a mixed league. Now it’s one night in the ladies league and Wednesday afternoon with Senior’s, curling what is called Sturling Curling. This league is on a drop-in bases and welcome any interested senior to come to the rink for 1 p.m. on any Wednesday, very little sweeping required but it’s a lot of fun!!!

My curling equipment now consists of 1 curling broom to sweep occasionally and 2 curling sticks to deliver the skip rocks, on for each end of the sheet.

I don’t get down in the hack to deliver my skip rocks any more but use the ever famous curling stick! Any curler will know about this curling equipment that is used by so many curlers with knee ailments! It enables a curler to continue to enjoy the game for a few more years.

My dad curled when he was 90 years old BUT I’m not sure I can match his stamina. Time will tell. God willing I’ll have a few more years to enjoy participating in this sport.

I am grateful that these ladies continue to curl with me and some have for number of years.

David Smyth of Vegreville wrote to ask about the blotter and the volume of “people caught driving without insurance and fined a few dollars.“ David writes… “For those of us who are law abiding citizens keeping our vehicles insured and registered, it begs the question as to how many are driving around un-insured?

I’ve seen several derelict cars driving our streets that might fall into that lower maintained category, rusted and falling apart that very likely could be un-insured by their owners.

What with insurance going up between 10 and 15% and more, there is going to be many more cars falling into this category as the owners won’t be able to afford to insure them.”

I discussed this concern with Staff Sergeant Terry HYGGEN of the Vegreville RCMP Detachment.

S/Sgt. Hyggen and I meet every week when he takes time out of his policing duties to help us produce the blotter.

We are both of the mind that Mr.

Smyth has misinterpreted what I have tried to convey in the blotter.

I will do my best to clarify.

The $287 fine (voluntary penalty) is for failure to PRODUCE the insurance card to police. This penalty can be assessed any time that a driver cannot supply the proof of insurance to police.

When a driver is determined to not actually possess insurance, they are awarded a mandatory court appearance with a standard $2950 fine as determined by a Judge.

Depending on the circumstances, it is often greater and can go as high as $11,500. Failure to pay the fine within a set date can lead to a short jail sentence. Subsequent offences result in escalating penalties While there may be a loophole, I think this one is under control.

On a related note, a vehicle that is not registered may not even be parked on a public roadway.

Members of our local police forces are aware of the offenders and often get tips from concerned citizens. They actively check on these files while on patrol.

The Junior High volleyball teams have finished up league play and playoffsand all had fun and successful seasons!

Some highlights form the season were gold medals for the Jr A Girls in Edmonton and Vermilion, silver for the B Girls in Vermilion, and bronze league medals for both A and B girls. VCHS Athletics is very appreciative to all of our hard-working, dedicated coaches, including: Laura Sturrock, Nancy Worobec, Willow Wemp, Shelby Klotz, Stacy Bennett, and Kayla Pulyk.

Another season has wrapped up for the Senior High Girls Volleyball team, and it was a very successful one! This young team battled through some tough tournaments, using the experiences to

improve and grow. The Cougars travelled to Bonnyville for Zones November 15th -16th to play for a chance to travel to Provincials. After defeating Ashmont, the Sr Girls returned home with the bronze medals! Congratulations on an amazing season, ladies! Big thanks to our coaching staff:, Katelyn Peden, Al Melnyk, Shauna Rutherford, and bus driver and lead cheerer, Donna Melenka.

All of the parents should be commended for supporting VCHS Athletics this fall. We appreciate your commitment to driving, your loud cheering, your fundraising efforts, and for encouraging and supporting all of our athletes!

We now look forward to moving into basketball season. VCHS plans to run 6 basketball teams this season!

They raised 3 children and were involved in the Newton community in which Edward coached hockey and baseball. He worked for Edmonton Telephones for over 20 years until he realized his dream and opened Vegreville Sports World. Sports was his passion; he continued to play baseball until age 64. After retiring, his biggest joys were life on the farm, antique collecting, his 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild, coffee with friends and golfing with the Antique Road Show.

A Funeral Service and Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, December 2, 2019 at the Two Hills Centennial Hall in Two Hills, AB with a private interment to follow.

Holiday Handicrafts at Library Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent

A homemade Christmas ornament created by a child gives a special touch to the holiday season for years to come. This is probably just one of the reasons registration was full for the Holiday Handicrafts program at Vegreville Centennial Library.

There were 10 children registered who were from the ages of five to eight at the first session on November 19. Kids created a puzzle pieces craft where they made a wintry themed project that they painted afterwards.

The library will be hosting this program on Tuesdays from November 19 to December 10.

Children Learn about the Town of Vegreville at PLC Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Children found out how representatives for the Town of Vegreville help make the community a great place to live in at the Town themed drop-in on the morning of November 22 at Vegreville and Area Parent Link Centre.

This program featured a town’s craft where children could create a character and have their character go through the town. There was also a town-themed story, free play and a

snack.

There was also a visit from special guests Town Councilors Ann Waters and Taneen Rudyk. When parents asked what Ann’s and Taneen’s favorite part of their job was Ann replied she really liked helping out everyone in the community including the children and being able to make a difference. Taneen said her favorite part of being a town councilor was being able to see what she can do to make the community a great place to live in.

Less red tape and shorter decision timelines would not only improve Alberta’s investment environment but would also free up AER’s resources, which could then be used for costbenefit analyses of major proposed energy projects.

Currently, companies are expected to identify and inform the AER of the environmental costs and economic benefits of proposed projects, yet are not expected to provide a rigorous estimation of the social costs and benefits, which is actually the appropriate domain of the regulator.

The adoption of state-of-the-art costbenefit analyses by the AER would help allay concerns that the regulator has been ‘captured’ by the oil and gas industry. It would also make explicit the criteria the AER uses to evaluate new energy development projects, which should reduce uncertainty surrounding the regulatory process.

Canada’s oil and gas industry, centred largely in Alberta, has had a rough few years due in part to the oil-price drop, a dearth of pipeline capacity and a seemingly never-ending quagmire of regulatory reviews and delays.

Clearly, any meaningful reform of the AER must address the recent headlinemaking allegations.

However, the reform should also target the AER’s regulatory objectives, its decision-making process and procedures. A sleeker, more efficient AER would be a big step in the right direction for Alberta and the country.

The love of Christmas was traveling around Vegreville United Church when they offered their Annual Christmas Tea and Bake Sale on November 23.

Rev. Pamela Milton’s collection of 22 nativity scenes which she has been collecting for 30 years was on the stage. Rev. Milton said she plans to continue to add nativity scenes to her collection as they really capture the true meaning of Christmas - the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Upon entering, people could purchase raffle tickets to win some lovely door prizes.

After this, Rev. Milton said a welcome prayer where she opened by thanking God they have this space to hold this event and then for everyone who was present at the tea.

This tea and bake sale also included a plate of petite sandwiches and another plate of a large assortment of squares and baking goods for sale, jewelry, religious books for sale by Lamplighter Books, and more.
