Vegreville Radiothon blows away expectations!

One of many donations that helped the Radiothon reach close to $60,000. The Vegreville Hospital Ladies Auxilary donated $1,200. Joe Machney Reporter After many months in the planning stages and much effort from a variety of businesses and community members, the day of St Joseph’s General Hospital Vegreville Radiothon, November 18 started bright and early at 6 in morning and ended at 3 in afternoon with Mayor Myron Hayduk having his mustache

and head shaved and donated which he promised to do if they reached $40,000 to build a Medical Simulation and Clinical Skills Training Centre to improve care in the community of Vegreville. The training centre will allow rural emergency and trauma physicians, healthcare providers and first responders stay up to date and current in the best practice for trauma

and emergency care. They accomplished this goal and surpassed it by a considerable amount nearing the $60,000 mark before the clock struck 3 with a total of $58, 065.

Live on location were the hosts Jamieson Brown from Country 106.5 and Dr. Daniel Edgcumbe who both played an integral part in

RCMP files from November 10 -20 Joe Machney Reporter November 10 13:32 Report of four suspicious males that claim to be selling furnaces and hot water tanks. Patrols were made but they were not located.

14:08 Request for a drive-by as a female thought she saw her ex outside her house last night.

16:04 A speeder was stopped and the two occupants in the vehicle were on conditions not to be together. The offending person was released on a recognizance.

22:02 911 call. It was determined that it was a medical emergency and EMS attended.

22:55 Report of a dead deer on highway 16. Members attended and removed the big pieces.

November 11 15:22 Report of an ongoing issue with barking dogs.

20:19 Report of an erratic driver. The driver was located in Mundare and was given a warning.

21:04 Report of a semi truck hauling fuel and the driver throwing out cigarette butts. Members patrolled but could the driver could not be located.

23:37 A vehicle stop resulted in a three-day vehicle seizure for the drinking driver.

November 12 15:09 911 report of uttering threats at a drinking establishment. The person was located later in the day and it was determined that no threat was uttered.

November 13 02:10 Report of a fight outside a drinking establishment. A male had started a fight and then got beat up by other men. No charges resulted.

03:29 Report of a female being assaulted by a male. The male was located, arrested and charged with assault.

12:04 Report of a theft of a vehicle from the night before. The caller had lent her vehicle out to a male and the male did not return her vehicle. The male has been charged with taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

14:16 Report of an abandoned vehicle in Vegreville for the last week.

Members dealt with it and found that it was stolen out of Vermilion.

21:23 Traffic stop on highway 16 for

expired registration. The vehicle was towed and a ticket was issued.

November 14 13:35 Report of an intoxicated male at the courthouse reporting to ensure that he does not drive. Member attended and talked to the intoxicated male who had just finished his court appearance and was walking home.

14:31 RCMP received a call about a male driving who does not have a d r iver license. A computer check showed that he did have a valid license.

15:43 Report of a split up couple requesting an intervention with a child custody exchange. Member attended and there were no issues to speak of.

16:30 Report of a collision on 16A where one driver went through the stop sign and was charged accordingly.

November 15 20:45 A male reported being assaulted by his ex-spouse. The female had stabbed him with a knife. She was located and arrested then remanded into custody.

November 16 14:22 Report of a missing female who had left late the night before to go for a walk and never returned. She ended up returning later that day.

14:47 Report of an abandoned holiday trailer. Members attended and determined that the trailer had been stolen.

14:56 Break and enter reported at a rural location. Nothing was taken.

15:45 Report of a suicidal female. The female was located and taken to the hospital for assessment.

November 17 10:04 911 report of shots fired that ended up being hunters. They were found by a nearby field and checks showed that they were abiding by all laws.

10:54 A speeder was pulled over. The driver did not have a driver’s license and the vehicle was not insured.

Tickets were issued and the vehicle was towed.

11:15 Report of a complaint of a vehicle crashing into a barrier at a local hotel. The driver provided samples over .8 and was charged and released.

12:59 Report of a break-in to a shed.

It is unknown if anything was taken.

NOVEMBER 23, 2016

Still under investigation.

17:24 Report of a trailer that was located which had been stolen. The owner picked up his trailer and the incident is still under investigation.

18:12 Report of an alarm going off at a local retailer. It ended up that a 16year-old female customer ended up getting locked in after closing.

20:15 Request from EMS to assist with an aggressive male who had taken drugs. However, RCMP was later called off and their assistance was not needed.

21:27 Report of a call where assistance was required to intervene between two adult brothers who were fighting.

RCMP took care of it and they were separated for the night.

23:32 Report of a vehicle with people taking items out of a building that was being renovated. It was determined that they were from the monastery and were working late.

November 18 07:54 Report of somebody trying to reserve a hotel room by somebody who had a possibly stolen credit card.

Still under investigation.

10:40 Report of some type of liquid coming out of a semi-truck and freezing on the highway. No license plate was obtained for the truck.

11:00 Report of items being stolen from a local implement dealer. Still under investigation.

11:13 Report of a speeding vehicle on highway 16. The vehicle was located and it was determined that the male was late for his dentist appointment in Red Deer.

19:39 Report of a two vehicle collision on highway 16. One vehicle was changing lanes and hit the other one.

A ticket was issued for an unsafe lane change.

November 20 09:25 A Sheriff conducted a traffic stop and pulled a driver over who then blew over the legal limit and was charged accordingly.

22:22 Report of a vehicle alarm going off and there were footprints in the snow around the vehicle.

Member attended and could not locate the driver.

During the week 3 false alarms , 5 false 911, 10 animal strikes and 95 calls for service were made in total.

Persistence is the Key to Everything Joe Machney Reporter I have read many books by people whom have made something of themselves and although their stories are different in many aspects, one commonality is constant between them all, persistence. This is where failure is tested and understood as a teacher, not an obstacle.

When you want something and your drive to achieve what you want is strong enough, the whole universe will assist you in getting that something. There is much truth to this statement and yes intellectually it looks good on paper and rather inspiring and hopeful, but if you can move past the mental realm of its comprehension and go further to really ‘get it’, you will see that there is so much more to it and so much peace that comes from the deeper understanding of it.

You see when you feel something it has more meaning to you, it is as if you own it, it is yours to keep. This is where the ‘wisdom is greater than knowledge’ thing comes in.

Wisdom cares, has feeling, knowledge is only facts or concepts; there is no life to it. Wisdom will always stand the test of time and last ages. This has been proven time and time again.

The wisdom in persistence is the feeling that you get

from the drive you have to accomplish what you want to have or do. When this wisdom is backed by faith than you are truly invincible and will achieve your goal, for when you have true faith you have that feeling that there is something, energy from the universe working with you, helping you to achieve your goal, your mission.

Remember that you are a spirit having a human experience and that spirit wants to express itself through you, it wants you to be all that you can be and have all that you want, because then it can express itself more through you. Thanking spirit or whatever you choose to call it, will bring you closer to that energy that is assisting you on your adventure. When you have this degree of trust and faith, life is really one big adventure, and there is nothing to fear at all.

When you truly believe this, feel this, get this, you will have conquered fear and will be freer than you could ever imagine. And this all starts; the first step on this journey is persistence. Persistence leads to feeling the drive to accomplish what you want, to having the faith that you will get there, to feeling that there are unseen energies manifesting as people, thoughts, omens, inspirations, and others to assist you on your journey, to the little accomplishments that tell you that you are on the right path. As you near the end the tests at this point will be most challenging, but remember what you have learned on your travels and use that warmth, that feeling that you get from it, to push you the last little bit to your goal.

U-Turned Around In The Wrong Place Sgt Jerry Nutbrown RCMP Ponderings One very unsafe driving practice that has resulted in injuries and death is u-turns. These types of turns expose the side of your vehicle to potential oncoming vehicles. In the Alberta Use of the Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation there are nine different scenarios where a violation ticket can be issued for u-turns. Three of these apply directly to school buses and the fines overall, range from $155 to $233.

Safety is always the priority with the associated fine being secondary.

So where can you make a u-turn? Well,

it is easier to explain where you aren’t allowed to make a u-turn than list where you are allowed.

What’s wrong with globalization and how to fix it Troy Media Of all the radical initiatives put forward

by U.S. president-elect Donald Trump, the notion of blowing up international trade deals is the most popular.

But tampering with globalization is risky. Should Trump have his way, the resulting dislocation would shake the global economy down to its socks.

Is it really worth the effort?

After all, the original governing logic behind globalization was magnanimous: “A rising tide lifts all boats.” From its inception in the dark days after the Second World War, free trade was seen as a central pillar for European recovery and the preservation of world peace.

Why was free trade so highly regarded?

Protectionism and vicious national economic competition were widely believed to be major contributors to the Second World War. According to Cordell Hull, then-United States secretary of state,”free trade dovetails with peace; high tariffs, trade barriers and unfair economic competition with war.” Sentiments like these were clearly evident at the 1944 Bretton Woods Conference, where the Allies made their economic plans for the postwar world.

However, despite committing to freer trade, the conference also attempted “to reconcile liberal international trade policies with high levels of domestic employment and growth.” The goal was a balanced international system benefiting the

world communityand each of its parts.

Despite these noble intentions, it seems the win-win logic of globalization has been lost in the implementation. Even Thomas Piketty, the famous French economist and author of Capital in the Twenty First Century, has said: “Trump’s victory is primarily due to the explosion in economic and geographic inequality in the United States over several decades and the inability of successive governments to deal with this.”

So what’s wrong with globalization?

A lot, it seems. Globalization has been associated with the hollowing out of developed economies, contributing to wage stagnation, runaway climate change and corporate tax evasion.

But if we confine ourselves to economic issues, it might be possible to preserve the best of globalization while jettisoning the most disruptive elements - although it’s impossible to fix globalization without fully appreciating the problem’s core.

Globalization worked pretty well for the first few decades. The Treaty of Paris (1951) established the European Coal and Steel Community and set an important standard in co-operation.

This was soon followed by the Treaty of Rome (1957), which established the European Atomic Energy Community.

With the success of these early supranational agreements, the road was cleared for more globalization initiatives. That

accelerated the development of the European Economic Community and set the stage for the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement of the 1980s.

Regrettably, globalization changed for the worse after the fall of the Soviet Union. In the early 1990s, the monetarist-inspired Washington Consensus launched a new era, with a new set of rules for globalization.

Originally, globalization was as much about strengthening human rights as about trade. Developed western economies concentrated on advancing workers’ rights (and therefore increasing workers’ share of gross domestic product) while increasing the scale of the market for business.

But the Washington Consensus quietly abandoned the idea that rights mattered in globalization. From that point, Wall Street and corporations gained the upper hand. We see the results now.

During the presidential campaign,

Trump said China was responsible for “raping” the U.S. economically, engaging in “the greatest theft in the history of the world.”

Those would be good first steps toward creating a sustainable global economy - rather than blowing up international trade deals, as Trump has threatened.

90 Years Ago – November 24, 1926 At a meeting of the “Accredited Flocks and Hatcheries Association of Vegreville” held last week, plans were made for the organization of a large co-operative chick hatchery – the first of its kind in the prairie provinces. An electric Petersyme Incubator with an egg capacity of 13,200 has been ordered and is expected to arrive early in January. It is hoped that by then a suitable building may have been secured and the first hatch will be started off on 15th of February.

It’s coming nearer, nearer every day in every way the Canadian Pacific Railway line north of the town. The little village of Wellsdale that lies north of Isley, celebrated the coming of the steel into the town on Saturday. Here rests the CPR line from Cutknife to Whitford for the winter. Yardage facilities and loading platform are under way.

Damage estimated at $1,200 was done by fire to the home of D. Ireland, near Ryley, last Sunday, despite the efforts of about 40 farmers who listened to the scene in automobiles to give aid.

75 Years Ago – November 26, 1941 Kenneth L. Crockett son of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Crockett of Vegreville, graduated on November 21st at the Dafoe, Sask. training school as Sergeant-Observer and he is presently taking a course in navigation at Rivers, Manitoba. This course lasts four weeks and then Sergt-Observer Crockett will be home on his embarkation leave.

The Kinsmen had set $1000 as an objective to raise at their auction but it takes an awful lot of small goods to reach such a sum and, besides, an auctioneer, even Wallace Wade, can take only so much. Mr. Wade who “cried” the sale, was practically crying himself when he called it off about 6:30 after a tough half days work. It takes brass lungs and steel vocal chords to keep going over six hours. The proceeds on Saturday were $570 from the auction. In addition some cash donations were received, bringing the total receipts to over $600, thus providing over 6,000 quarts of milk in the “Milk for Britain” campaigne.

LAC Russell Burger is home on leave with his parents Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Burger. Russell is stationed at the RCAF depot in Trenton, Ontario.

50 Years Ago – November 24, 1966 Town foreman Earl Tillipaugh narrowly escaped serious injury on Sunday morning when he was taken into an excavation following the collapse of the trench walls. Mr. Tillipaugh was investigating a water main break with another town employee, Tony Pooke, when the ground collapsed under him taking him down into the water and mud. Apparently the water from the main had washed away most of the soil leaving only a shell of earth where the trench walls had been. Mr. Tillipaugh was able to hold himself from sinking by grasping the edges of the excavation with is arms, while Mr. Pooke assisted him out of the hole.

Wilf Ursulak of Vegreville topped the Alberta Holstein-Friesian Association “Show Window Sale” in Edmonton recently and sold his two year old heifer for $1,000. The animal, “Raintree Perseus Delight, No. 2006425” is a granddaughter of ABC Reflection Sovereign, a bull that is considered to be the greatest in Canada.

Mr. Ursulak’s heifer was A.I. breed.

A suggestion from the Vegreville Chamber of Commerce to be resolved by the town council setting Christmas Shopping hours this year was made at the Chamber meeting last Thursday. On Wednesday, December 21st, stores in Vegreville will remain open until 6:00 pm. On Thursday and Friday, December 22nd and 23rd the stores will remain open until 9:00 pm and on Saturday, December 24th the stores will close at 6:00 pm.

25 Years Ago – November 19, 1991 Santa visited with the children who attended the light-up ceremonies in Vegreville on Friday, November 15. After the official countdown Santa and the children went on sleigh rides through Vegreville.

On November 13 the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool Ltd. announced the closure of its processing plant in Vegreville effective December 31, 1991. “Changes in the dairy industry, combined with the general state of the provincial economy have made it necessary for us to consolidate our operations,” said Alistair Johnston, director of operations, at NADP. Alberta Power Limited joined in the town light up festivities by putting a candy cane on its tower located at the service centre at the west end of Vegreville.

The Vegreville Main Street program was officially opened on Friday, November 15. The master of Ceremonies was Robert G. Tinkess, Vegreville’s main street coordinator. The Alberta Main Street programme was established by the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, with the assistance of Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism and the Heritage Canada Foundation.

A South Korea Rasputin Gwynne Dyer “Sad thoughts trouble my sleep at night,” said South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye. “I realise that whatever I do, it will be difficult to mend the hearts of the people, and then I feel a sense of shame.” And so she should, but it’s also hard not to feel some sympathy for her plight. This isn’t your usual political corruption case.

She never benefitted from her actions in any way.

Despite Park’s televised apology on 4 November, the opposition-controlled National Assembly voted on Thursday to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the president, and anti-Park demonstrations continue daily. As a sitting president, she cannot be prosecuted, but prosecutors will begin questioning her next week.

They also interviewed senior management officials at Samsung, Hyundai and Korean Air about allegations that they were pressured into donating millions of dollars to foundations controlled by Choi Soon-sil, a close friend of President Park. Even if the claims are true, Park deserves more pity than anger, for she couldn’t really help it.

She was only nine when her father, General Park Chung-hee, seized power in South Korea in 1961. She was 15 when North Korean infiltrators launched an assault that got within metres of the presidential Blue House. And she was 22 when an assassination attempt on her father miscarried and killed her mother instead.

It was then that cult leader Choi Tae-min, who had set up his own religious group known as the Church of Eternal Life,

befriended the grief-stricken and isolated young woman. He told her that her mother had appeared to him in a dream, asking him to help her daughter, and she fell for it.

Choi became her mentor, a relationship that became even closer after her own father was also assassinated in 1978. The lonely young woman also grew close to Choi’s daughter, Soon-sil – and that bond persisted even after Choi Tae-min’s death in 1994. She has been in the Choi family’s clutches for her entire adult life, and they hit the jackpot when Park won the presidential election in 2012.

Choi Soon-sil had no official position in Park’s government, but she had direct access to the president. She had no security clearance, but she regularly received secret government documents and even edited the president’s speeches.

Choi Soon-sil used her insider knowledge to steer her cronies into the right bids for government contracts. She also shook down major South Korean corporations for millions of dollars on the strength of her claimed influence over the president. In total, some $70 million is alleged to have gone to Choi’s two “non-profit” foundations.

What triggered Choi’s downfall was her attempt to get her not-too-bright daughter admitted to the prestigious Ewha Women’s University, claiming she had the president’s support. The girl was accepted, but the students launched a public protest against this breach of the university’s rules.

Late last month, Choi and her daughter gave up and left for Germany – but she left an unencrypted laptop behind in her abandoned office in Seoul with all the details of her manipulations. It was found by cable TV network JTBC, and the fat was in the fire.

Choi is probably going to jail, her daughter is not going to university, and President Park is going...where? She has only fifteen months left of her five-year term, and the opposition parties would probably prefer to leave her in power, bleeding all over her own party’s credibility. But she is finished politically, and that just feels sad.

National bullying awareness week EIPS Staff and students throughout Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) are planning a variety of activities to promote healthy relationships during this year’s National Bullying Awareness Week (NBAW), which takes place November 21-25.

Launched in 2002, NBAW is an annual event celebrated around the world to boost awareness among students, staff, parents and community members about bullying and ways to prevent incidents of it in their schools.

Within EIPS, students and staff will spend the week discussing how to foster healthy relationships, discourage intolerances and communicate through conflict.

“Creating learning spaces that are welcoming, caring, respectful and safe is an ongoing priority within the Division,” says Trina Boymook, the Board Chair at EIPS. “When people feel cared for and respected, they are more apt to reach their full potential, give back to their communities and engage in healthy relationships.

National Bullying Awareness Week is one of the avenues we use to increase awareness around the importance of positive and healthy relationships.”

Throughout the week of November 21-25, various activities are planned in most schools Division wide including school assemblies, fundraisers, presentations on cyberbullying, student performances themed around building healthy relationships, conflict-resolution lesson plans, fundraisers, deeds of kindness and much more. Additionally, year-round, EIPS schools have ongoing projects and initiatives in place geared towards building healthy relationships such as the Seven Habits, Random Acts of Kindness, Bucket Fillers, Leader in Me and various community-service programs.

“Being informed about bullying is the first step to working together to promote healthy relationships. It’s not natural or acceptable for students to bully each other,” says Tracy Muth, the director of Inclusive Learning at EIPS. “It’s a learned behaviour, and with the right intervention can be unlearned. We’ll be reminding students of this during National Bullying Awareness Week.”

Vegreville Elks Donate On November 18, 2016, the Vegreville Elks Lodge presented a cheque for $5000 to the Covenant Foundation – St. Joseph’s General Hospital. These funds will be used for the Medical Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre that the Covenant Foundation is fundraising for the Hospital. The donation was made during the local CKVG Country 106.5 radio station’s Radiothon on Nov. 18 at the St. Joseph’s Hospital. Sandra Jansen joins Alberta’s New Democrat Caucus Murray Langdon On Thursday, November 17, Premier Rachel Notley today welcomed the Hon. Sandra Jansen to Alberta’s New Democrat Caucus.

“I’m very pleased that Sandra Jansen has decided to join our team,” Notley said. “Sandra has always been a voice for practical, moderate, progressive policy. She is now going to be a compelling voice for that approach within our caucus and within our government.”

“Like all of her colleagues in our caucus, Ms. Jansen will represent her constituents within the government, and she will have a great opportunity to earn her place and her role in the government by participating in our work inside and outside of the Legislature,” Notley said.

“Most Albertans are reasonable, moderate, pragmatic people,” Ms. Jansen said. “And most Albertans want a reason-

able, moderate, pragmatic government. I believe we are getting that kind of government from Premier Notley.”

“I also believe that is absolutely not what would be on offer from those who are taking over the Progressive Conservative Party,” Ms. Jansen added. “The best traditions of the Peter Lougheed legacy in Alberta politics are being pursued by Premier Notley. And that legacy is being kicked to the curb by the extremists who are taking over my former party.”

“I also strongly believe the tone they are bringing to Alberta politics belongs in our past. We are not going to move forward by going backward,” Ms. Jansen said. “That approach to politics is completely out of touch with the moderate majority of people in Alberta.”

The danger of deteriorated dynamite

Cpl. Paul Zanon There is a large, but unquantified, amount of degraded/deteriorated dynamite in Alberta as a result of historic rules that permitted easy access to dynamite for farmers and ranchers – a lot of which is currently decaying in barns and fields. Over time the dynamite ‘weeps’ or ‘sweats’ chemicals which crystalize and form on the outside of the dynamite and can then pool in the bottom of boxes or storage containers.

This creates an extremely dangerous

situation where if the materials are jarred even the slightest the chemical becomes unstable and can possibly lead to detonation.

In addition to sticks of dynamite, it is important to note that copper detonators containing lead azide were produced in Canada from 1918 to 1965 and are still being stored in older homesteads within the province. If exposed to moisture these detonators can produce an explosive gas and the slightest change in environment can cause degradation in less than one hour leading to an extremely dangerous situation.

The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit would like to urge Albertans to be cautious of what they find on their properties and to speak with elderly members of their families prior to clearing out older out-buildings in order to determine if there could be explosives on site.

If you suspect that you may have some of these materials on your land call your local RCMP detachment, or police agency of jurisdiction, to have the materials safely disposed of. DO NOT touch or move the explosives yourself.

Keep your smoke alarm firing on all cylinders Lewis Smith Did you replace the batteries in your smoke alarm after changing the clocks back for Daylight Saving Time? With apologies to Saskatchewan residents, who do not adjust their clocks, safety advocates have often repeated this handy mnemonic device as an easy way to remember that batteries in smoke alarms must be replaced twice a year.

This year’s National Home Fire Safety Week, November 24 - 30, the Canada Safety Council is reminding Canadians to take preventative measures to keep their smoke alarms operational, unencumbered and capable of alerting members of their household in an emergency situation.

As a tool used only in case of emergency, it’s easy to accidentally forget to perform regular maintenance on your smoke alarm. At the same time, unless you’re doing regular tests, the first time you find out it’s not working might also be your last. Smoke and fire are unforgiving, which makes it vitally important to ensure your smoke alarm is in working condition.

The test button on most smoke alarms is effective to ensure function of the sound and that it’s receiving power. But what about its ability to sense and detect smoke? This is why it’s important to regularly test your smoke alarm using real smoke. The Canada Safety Council recommends testing once a month using the test button and once a year by lighting a

match and holding it a few inches below the smoke alarm. Take care not to hold it too close or you risk damaging your alarm.

If you hear the alarm, you know your alarm is functioning properly. If you don’t hear the sound ring out, replace the batteries and try again. If your alarm is connected electrically to household circuits, double-

check to ensure the fuse is working correctly and try again. If neither of these steps help, replace the unit.

You need a smoke alarm on every level of your home. It’s preferable to keep them near the kitchen and sleeping areas, as well as high fire hazard areas (e.g., near the fireplace.) A smoke alarm near the kitchen may be triggered occasionally when you’re cooking at high heats, but don’t disable your alarm – that’s just an indicator that it’s in working condition.

Waft the air around the alarm until the alarm stops, or look into purchasing one that has temporary decreased sensitivity settings.

Alarms should be replaced at regular intervals, and should of course be replaced should your current ones become defective or broken. The Canada Safety Council recommends erring on the side of caution and replacing your alarm once every five years.

When purchasing an alarm, consider the types of alarms. Ionization alarms are quicker to detect fastspreading fires that produce more heat than smoke, while photoelectric alarms react more quickly to smoldering fires that may smoke for hours before bursting into flame. Consider one of each type per floor of your home.

Covenant Foundation is the fundraising body for St Joseph’s General Hospital and since they took over for them in April this is their first annual Radiothon. “The new initiative in the community has had a wonderful response,” Laura Ruddock, senior manager of communications for Covenant Foundation said. “The number of donations that we’ve had from phone to walkins and large donations from the service clubs have all been wonderful and generous. I have to first give kudos to the committee who has been so instrumental in the success of this event. We have a lot of dedicated, hard-working volunteers and the staff at the hospital who really care about this facility and the project.

They have been working really hard to

see this come together.”

In respects to Dr. Edgcumbe who came up with this idea, Ruddock feels that “he is a great champion for this community and for this hospital. He strongly believes, as do we at Covenant Foundation, that those in rural communities deserve the same access and same level of healthcare that you would get in an urban centre. In rural communities like this, the volume of patients coming through the facility is lower than you would see in an urban centre, which means fewer opportunities to practice those skills and this training centre will allow the teams to practice those skills on a regular basis. It will also provide training to many surrounding smaller communities. This will allow for Vegreville to become a hub for education and training.”

As Dr. Edgcumbe came up with the idea, he prepared the proposal and submitted it

to the Covenant Foundation who felt it would be really good for the community.

The total cost of the project is $80,000 to bring the simulation centre to Vegreville and with the project being new to the community and only having been started since April a modest goal of $25,000 was first set.

“It’s an outstanding turn out by the community for our Radiothon and Covenant Foundation were the ones that really have helped to organize this and did a great job. Dr. Edgcumbe has really been the driver behind the full medical simulation project and the radio station came on with very little encouragement when they heard about it. This is really a bonus and a benefit for our hospital and we’re looking forward to it as a service that we can provide from this facility,” Administrator Anthony Brannnen said.

“I always felt that if you reach out people will respond!” commented Sister Mary Ellen O’Neill, who was a 1956 graduate from the school of nursing.

“This is a real testament to the community support,” Dr. Edgcumbe said with

News Advertiser PAGE 11 a huge smile on his face. “It shows how much the community values the hospital and how much they value their healthcare, even in times that are difficult. It’s overwhelming. We’ve had a super hard working committee as well throughout the whole journey and everyone has really pulled through for us.”

With a bald head and a shaven mustache, Mayor Myron Hayduk was still beaming after the Radiothon finished.

“It’s a pleasure and it’s helping our community as well and is a benefit to our health system. It is putting Vegreville a little more on the map. Also in respects to our CPC, I feel that this is going to help with that as well to show the strength of this community and to let the Government in Ottawa know that we’re not going to let that happen. It really shows what we can do when what they expected was $25,000 and we ended up raising close to $60,000.”

Christmas candlelight service of remembrance

Viola Braun-Fox On Sunday evening, December 4, 2016 at 7:00 P.M. the Vegreville Social Centre will once again be transformed into a

beautifully decorated hall of celebration. Community members, young and old, will be gathering to remember family members and friends that have passed away who will not be there during this Christmas Season.

The Christmas Season is a time of worship and a celebration of love and joy with family and friends. Sometimes this can be a very difficult time for those of us who recently have lost a loved one. Many sounds and sights act as reminders of the times that we have shared with a special friend or family member in past Christmas Seasons.

This will be the seventeenth annual Christmas Candlelight Service of Remembrance. The Akasu Palliative Care Society spearheaded this project in 2000 in response to a need for support for people experiencing grief and loss especially at this time of year. A beautiful service will be created in a lovely setting with the active participation of Akasu Palliative Care Society, the local funeral home-Park Memorial, and the Vegreville Ministerial Association.

This year our guest speaker will be Yvonne Racine. Her presentation will be “When Christmas Hurts, Coping in the Holiday Season After a Loss.� Yvonne brings many years of professional experience and personal interest in the bereavement and support of people as they grieve the loss of a loved one.

Although this Christmas Season may bring deep sadness for all of us, we can hope for a day when the pain will not be so severe and for a day when we can remember with peaceful gratitude the gift of our relationship with the person who has left us. You and your family members are welcome whether you are experiencing a recent loss or whether you are experiencing a loss from a long time ago.

The funeral home will present tokens of remembrance to remind us of the loved one we are mourning at this time of year. Following the service, a time of fellowship with kind donations of food and drink will be shared by everyone.

Cutting Winter Firewood

AgriNews While hard work, preparing firewood for winter use can be very rewarding for those who use wood as a source of main or supplemental home heating.

“Depending on the cost of current competitive energy sources (mostly natural gas), firewood can provide some savings if you are using dry wood and an efficient wood stove,” says Toso Bozic, bioenergy/agroforestry specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

However, even for those not in the commercial firewood business and who just use the wood for personal use, there are few things to consider including firewood source, harvesting, drying/seasoning, storage and use. “Even if you decide to just cut trees for your own use you must be prepared for hard work that will last several hours, to work outside in colder weather conditions, and you must have equipment for cutting, splitting and transporting firewood.”

Bozic says the first trees to choose are those trees that have already fallen and laying on the ground that are very dry.

“You’ll probably need to remove the tree limbs before taking them to where you want cut them for firewood. If you are planning to make a trail through the trees, the ones you cut for the trail are the next in line to use for firewood.

Last choice is trees that are healthy and green - there is no need to use those trees for firewood unless you have to.

Another source of firewood could be slabs and scrap lumber from local sawmills or even wood from landfill facilities if they are clean and free of con-

tamination. Never use pressure treated wood or any other chemically contaminated wood such as plywood, oriental strand board (OSB), or rotten wood.”

When harvesting trees, the most important thing to keep in mind is safety.

“If you have never used a chainsaw, or split wood or used other harvesting equipment, I would strongly suggest take a safety course,” says Bozic. “And, as using a chainsaw and working in a forest is very dangerous work, you can always hire a professional timber harvester to do the job for you. Using a chainsaw is a major cause of accidents among professional loggers as well as hobby loggers.”

Safety steps when cutting trees include accessing the hazards, identifying where the tree will fall, cutting and clearing around the tree, determining an escape route, deciding what cuts to make and always remembering to look up. All equipment used must be setup properly and will often require more than one person to operate.

“Once you cut trees to the length, you need to transport them to your yard or place where you’ll cut the trees to firewood length. Please keep your logs off the ground as they can get dirty or freeze in winter time.”

When splitting by hand, it is not uncommon to run across twisted pieces of wood that defy splitting. Bozic says you may leave these pieces as they are also hard to split by maul. “There are many different types of mechanical log splitter but they can be grouped into those run by using electricity, gasoline or powered by using tractor or skids. Depending how much firewood you will you use annually, it could be the most important piece of equipment that you need to buy.

Bovine tuberculosis investigation in Alberta

AgriNews In late September, bovine tuberculosis (TB) was detected in a cow that originated in southeastern Alberta. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is leading the disease investigation. Information about bovine tuberculosis and the most up-to-date information about the investigation is available on the CFIA website. The CFIA and Agriculture and Forestry continue to work closely together as the investigation progresses.

The investigation process and protocols underway are in place to protect the health of Canadian livestock and maintain market access. For cattle producers affected by the CFIA investigation and quarantines, there is an existing suite of financial programs that may provide support. Staff at Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) are available to help answer producer questions and provide them with guidance in accessing these programs.

On November 20, the New Myrnam School was bustling with vendors and community members getting into the Christmas spirit early this year! The Myrnam Agricultural Society hosted their annual Christmas Craft Show and Sale which brought in approximately 125 people Before and after, Mayor Myron Hayduk agreed to shave his head and mustache as an incentive for people to get past the $40,000 mark for the St Joseph’s General Hospital Vegreville Radiothon.

They raised that and much more as the total at 3pm neared $60,000 A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Allan Joseph Soosay, 26, for second-degree murder, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm following a stabbing incident on Nov. 11, 2016, that left one man dead and one other injured.

Go East of Edmonton Celebrates Success for Regional Tourism Ellie Goertzen November 9 marked the day of the Go East of Edmonton Regional Tourism organization’s Fall Special Event, hosted this year at the beautiful Red Feather Ridge event facility southeast of Mannville – owned and operated by Doug and Cheryl Livingstone, who have been actively involved in Alberta tourism for many years.

The focus on this year’s event was on how we are changing tourism in our region east of Edmonton with two excellent presentations in the vein of that theme, one by Kevin Kisilevich, Marketing and

Development Consultant for Go East of Edmonton and Director of ACTA (Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance), and the second

by Trevor Tessier of Strong Coffee Marketing out of Edmonton. Kevin’s presentation focused on what’s happening, what’s changing and what Go East is doing to develop the tourism industry throughout the region, Trevor’s focus was on data and analytics and how that assists us in knowing where to focus our investments, promotions and event development.

In attendance was the staff of Go East of Edmonton, representatives from a number of the region’s towns, cities, and counties, as well as representatives of key regional events and several business owners.

This event also featured a delicious meal, with a focus on local food, catered by Red Feather Ridge.

There was enthusiastic feedback from the attendees of the event, who were better able to understand the important role that the Go East of Edmonton organization plays in marketing the region in the tourism industry. The presentations featured some key information on what’s trending in

tourism for the region, including a massive increase in the popularity of farmers’ markets and a surge of new interest in heritage and culinary experiences.

During the presentations, key information on Go East of Edmonton’s 2016 performance was shared, including an incredible increase in web traffic of 486%, number of social media followers doubled over last year and it was a record setting year for number of guides distributed and picked up by consumers, with an estimated 200,000 readers of the guide throughout 2016. Also shared during the presentation

by Kisilevich were some key points on what developing and nurturing the tourism industry can mean for the region during a time when the former mainstays of the economy are experiencing a slump.

Namely, encouraging tourism activity generates a ripple effect in the local economy, creating jobs faster than any other industry and seeing hires at all educational levels with full-time, part-time and contract positions that can’t be outsourced.

Go East of Edmonton Tourism is heading into its fifth year of tourism development and promotion throughout the region and is recognized by Travel Alberta and communities throughout the region as the leader and main source of tourism marketing and development. In 2016, the team of Go East of Edmonton attended every meeting, seminar or workshop hosted by Travel Alberta, resulting in upto-date information to use in strategy and development, as well as strengthening the relationships between key Travel Alberta representatives and the Go East of Edmonton organization.

Tourism Consultant and Director of Go East of Edmonton, Kevin Kisilevich, also serves as the director on the board of the Alberta Culinary Tourism Alliance (ACTA). Go East has been working together with ACTA for more than two years now to facilitate the development and promotion of culinary trails throughout the east of Edmonton region. Kisilevich was in attendance at the Travel Alberta Annual Conference, hosted in Banff on October 24th and 25th, where ACTA was

honoured with an Alberta Tourism ALTO Award. “It’s been a great year for the Go East tourism region,” remarked Kisilevich. Other award finalists from the region included the Ukrainian Heritage Cultural Village and the hugely popular Big Valley Jamboree.

The continued development work done through the Go East and ACTA partnership for the culinary field has enjoyed great interest and support from restaurant owners and producers across the region. Go East is very pleased to see that there are many new culinary businesses starting up in the region, like the Old School Cheesery located in the County of Vermilion River – just one of the many unique, local culinary businesses that will benefit from the culinary tourism development work done by Go East of Edmonton.

When discussing the reasons for the great success that Go East of Edmonton has been experiencing, Kisilevich says it is due to a number of key factors. Go East has developed strong partnerships with key major media, including Global Edmonton and CTV Edmonton, as well as local media – Country 106.5 and local newspapers. As well, Go East has seen excellent success from working with some of the top digital marketing consultants in Alberta – with a recent notable partnership with Strong Coffee Media in Edmonton which resulted in a summer-long digital marketing campaign which was wildly successful and the first of its kind done in a tourism organization in our region. “Another key to our success is that we have put together an experienced and dedicated team of directors, staff, and consultants who are making a real difference in growing tourism,” said Kisilevich.

Kisilevich also shared that many of the events and attractions saw a marked increase in attendance over previous years, in spite of the rainy weather. In fact, a number of event organizers have stated that Go East made a real difference and brought people out, even during rainy days.

As 2016 draws to a close, the Go East team is focused on strategizing for the future, expecting another huge growth over the next year. “We are very excited to say that we are seeing a real growth in regional tourism and we invite businesses and organizations who want to get involved and participate to do so.

We’re seeing a very positive tourism trend in the region right now and we anticipate that it will be continuing into the future throughout EastCentral Alberta,” he concluded.

RCMP PONDERINGS CONTINUED from PAGE 5 The most common place that people are making illegal u-turns is between intersections, such as in front of the library in Vegreville. I would hazard to guess that this is the worst offender location in our entire area for u-turns.

This isn’t good as many young and elderly people frequent there. It is against the law in Alberta to make this turn between any intersections. The next place not to make a u-turn is where an alley intersects with a street. Locally,

we don’t really have enough room at our controlled intersections for motorists to make a u-turn, but this too is illegal. So if you are in a city with a median between traffic lanes, don’t turn around at a controlled intersection. An uncontrolled intersection is where there are no traffic control devices such as traffic lights or stop signs. An exception to this would be signage indicating that you are allowed to make a u-turn at a controlled intersection often in conjunction with a designated turn arrow.

The next place not to make a u-turn is on a curve in the road at, or near, the crest of an incline (hill). Visibility is the big issue here as other vehicles coming may not have enough time to see your vehicle. Next, you are not allowed to make a u-turn where prohibited by a sign. This may be in a place that normally would allow a u-turn but the existence of a ‘no u-turn’ sign prohibits it. You also are not allowed to make a u-turn at an urban intersection that may be private but that the public normally has access to. This generally refers to access to a retail store or business. The business is on private property but the public comes-and-goes from it, such as at a convenience store or restaurant.

These and many rules are listed and explained online and can be found by merely searching for the regulation named at the beginning of this article.

Remember, the fact that a driver has been issued a driver’s license automatically makes the driver responsible for knowing all the driving rules and regulations of each province they drive in. A driver saying that they weren’t aware of a particular driving offense isn’t an accepted reason by law enforcement or the courts.

Persons with disabilities live in every part of the province and are an integral part of who we are as Albertans. They make a major contribution to the economic and social pulse of the province and the community benefits if persons with disabilities are included in school, work and community activities. The full value of persons with disabilities is often not realized because of physical or attitudinal barriers, so because of that, on December 3, 2016 individuals and organization throughout Vegreville will focus on raising awareness of person with disabilities and their contributions.

“Therefore, I, Mayor Myron Hayduk, by and with the advice and consent of the Council of the Town of Vegreville, do hereby proclaim December 3, 2016 as International Day of Persons with Disabilities in the Town of Vegreville,” said Hayduk. “This is about selfrespect and when we’re more self-efficient we feel better about ourselves and also to know that they are a part of contributing to our community and the lifestyle here. So, yes I comment all of the supporters and the staff and volunteers.”

Doreen Tennant wins prestigious award Joe Machney Reporter Doreen Tennant has recently received the Outstanding Service Award by the college and association of respiratory therapists of Alberta. Doreen was selected by her peers for the award and after that, the nomination went through council who choose the winner for the year.

“I was selected this year and feel very humbled and grateful for the experience,” Tennant said. “When I was selected it was really about the fact that when I started my career in respiratory, a few years after graduation and working in the large urban centres I came out here and started up a rural respiratory program. It was initiated at St Joseph’s hospital where I went to different hospitals one day a week and provided the respiratory services. At that time to have respiratory therapy in a rural setting was unheard of, so when I was chosen for this award that was one of the areas that helped me in getting the award. I was one of the initiators of rural respiratory care in the area of Vegreville

and I’m also an owner of this business.”

In her mind to have the college recognize her is a milestone all in its own, but a big part of it is attitude and coming to work every day with a smile on your face. “I’m glad to know that the work I’ve done has added to our profession in a good way. I love what I do, I love the patients that we care for. I feel that this line of work has so many opportunities for people and I hope that more people coming out of high school look at it as a career option because it is a very rewarding one.”

Also on top of getting this award, the company went through accreditation which means on October 2, 3, 4 they went through accreditation Canada to get accredited which was a voluntary process to go through but it was their report card on how well they provide services to the patients. “It is about their safety and having people who are properly trained in service and we just received our award and have been given accreditation status. About 15 companies in Alberta and six of us have been accredited,” she concluded, humbly.

Bandits steal the game from Rangers Dara Dimmock Student Reporter On November 19th the Vegreville Rangers lost in a disappointing game to the Lloydminster Bandits. The Bandits scored three goals in the final period with victory just out of reach for the Rangers as the Bandits stole the game with a score of 7 to 5.

The Rangers had a rocky start and end to the first period with the first Bandits goal at just two minutes in. The Bandits’ offense struck hard, taking multiple shots on goal which startled the Rangers’ defense. Cikaliuk didn’t let the early score stun him, though, as he made up for it with several marvelous saves which were followed by the Rangers first goal at the fifteen-minute mark, made by Warrington and assisted by Manz. Puck and glass collided as the Bandits blitzed the Rangers end of the ice with Cikaliuk holding on while his teammates fought for possession. For most of the first period, the crowd witnessed the play moving consistently back and forth from end to end. Lloydminster’s’ second goal was scored at the nine-minute mark, but Rangers defense showed signs of improvement. Pushes, trips, and brief

scuffles arose along with the tension between the two teams. There were good shots for the Rangers, but unfortunately, they made just as many penalties. Two penalties were called for Falconer, one for elbowing and another for roughing.

Rangers’ Grykuliak also receiving a penalty for slashing. One penalty was also given to Bandits’ Calvin for slashing. The third goal for the Bandits was scored at the three-minute mark and the fourth goal with just seconds left, leaving the Lloydminster team very enthused.

Penalties from period one carried over to period two and the Rangers switched goalies, putting in Caylib Micklich. The Rangers pushed hard and it paid off with their second goal at the eighteenminute mark, by Josh Micklich and assisted by Steinbach and Falconer. The aggressive Rangers equaled an abundance of penalties, broken equipment, and injuries, for both sides. Two penalties were given to the Bandits and five for multiple Rangers by the end of the period. Ranger’s goalie Micklich took at nasty hit at the fourteen-minute mark but stuck through the rest of the game.

More action at the Bandits end resulted in the Rangers third goal, made by

Doherty and assisted by Kitz and Grykuliak, and fourth, made solely by Warrington. That tied everything up at the end of the period at 4 each.

The final period had the Rangers struggling to show restraint. Lloydminster danced around the Rangers’ net with the puck for the first few minutes of the period. Dancing the puck was a common technique for their team, paying off for them with their fifth goal at sixteen minutes.

The Rangers remained optimistic and encouraged one another to push onward. Taking some risks to recover from the Bandits’ goal, Rangers’ Manz a nd Greene received penalties, respectively, for

elbowing and tripping. Every attempt made by the Rangers to clear their end of the puck was swiftly defeated by the Bandits, who took to their puck-possession dance as a default maneuver. The Rangers hopes for a tying goal at six minutes were abolished with the Bandit’s deflating sixth and seventh goals scored just seconds apart. Even with the Rangers fifth goal at the four-minute mark and a swap for a sixth player instead of a goalie, there wasn’t enough time to recover the game.

“Too many penalties,” coach Scott Langkow said, “We have some guys trying to do too much and it ends being doing less and it costs us….you have some trying to do their job and somebody else’s and it’s just too much.” Not keeping to their positions was the fatal flaw for the Rangers during this intense game. Coach Langkow remains hopeful for future games, “There’s lots of stuff to work on... we have a fairly young team.”

As the winning charity at the June 2016 meeting, CALS (The Community Association for Lasting Success) will host Vegreville’s third 100 People Who Care gathering at the Vegreville Sunshine Club.

Uniting with a global-movement of crowdfunding, the Vegreville chapter of 100 People Who Care meets twice a year for a one-hour meeting to collectively give up to $10,000 to a local registered charity. Anyone can join by simply

filling out a membership form which then allows them to nominate a local registered charity. Three charities are randomly chosen from the nominations to present at the public gathering why they believe their charity is most deserving. Once the presentations have concluded, each member casts one vote for the charity they believe to be most fitting to reserve the collective donation. The charity with the highest number of votes receives the total donated proceeds from those present, as each member writes a cheque for $100 to the winner.

100 People Who Care allows community members to give back in a collective and meaningful way, while raising awareness of all local registered charities, resulting in increased donations across

the board. December 2015 saw the Vegreville Food Bank receive $3800 in crowdfunding donations from the Vegreville chapter of 100 People Who Care, while the CALS Breakfast Club benefited from $2000 in June 2016.

100 People Who Care is an open group and new members are encouraged to attend upcoming gatherings to learn more about local charities and this unique model of crowdfunding.

Letter to the Editor While there has been considerable discussion recently about the relocation of the Immigration Case Processing Centre in Vegreville, there has been literally no analysis shared with the public about how this government office has been managed in the past. Many local residents may not be aware that there have been at least seven Directors managing the operation – turnover at a rate of a different Director every three years; many of who opted not to live in Vegreville. This “revolving door” style of management has not tended to offer stability to the organization. Many people are aware that morale has been extremely low at the CPC for a number of years. National headquarters is presumably aware of the situation but has not initiated any action to address the problem.

The political decision made nearly 25 years ago to create CPC Vegreville has not been fully supported by the Ottawa bureaucracy since year one. Inadequate staffing has resulted in overtime being a norm rather than the exception. Employees work on Saturday and/or Sunday with the expense at time and one half has related to excessive labour costs for over twenty years. The Human Resource Section at CPC - the mainstay of any organization, - has been relocated out of Vegreville a few years ago.

Staff recruitment at the CPC has been made in the form of casual and term positions. This means that prospective employees who hold permanent positions outside government do not wish to gamble on the possibility of gaining full time government employment. Another tool in staffing by government is to offer a contract to those who have retired with a pension – great for the retired employee who is considered to be double-dipping (double income from government). Recruitment is done solely by internet and not by local newspaper.

The extremely weak rationale for relocation of this government office would never be a decision by any non-government private business. One does not have to have a university degree in business to identify that public transit in a large city is preferable to taking a ten to fifteen minute walk to work or even a three minute drive; not to mention parking costs. Similarly one does not have to be a financial analyst to identify the cost of housing in a large city is less economical than the price of a home in any small town. The push to urbanize government offices is another factor which adds to the cost for employees to maintain a reasonable cost of living in any large city.

Bilingualism promoted very aggressively by government limits career enhancement.

Government no longer offers language training as they once did.

The closing of CPC not only affects employees and their families but the entire community. Housing values will undoubtedly fall drastically as there becomes a glut of houses for sale on the market. There is literally no new businesses moving into Vegreville to take up the slack.

Although the Conservative government closed about nine Veteran Affairs offices, now the Liberals are in the processing of reopening them – five in Liberal consitutencies. It seems the media or others have not asked government to identify the cost to the taxpayer.

Most all CPC employees and local residents fail to identify with the fact that many small immigration offices were closed or had staff reduced when the office in Vegreville was created in 1994. Such employees should recognize that they are simply pawns of government – both Liberal or Conservative.

Rosanne Fortier Vegreville Alliance Church was a paradise for everyone who enjoys picking through free clothing and household items at the church’s recent bi-annual Open Cupboard in the auditorium.

A full hall of citizens attended this free shopping event. Pastor Darryl Crocker said they hold this event twice-a-year; once in the spring and once in fall.

“God gives desires and passions to His children and He gave someone the idea to help others because we are a community church and we want to help the community.

This event is a simple thing to put together. People give what they want to or they give what

they don’t need any more to people who can use it. It’s a community recycling project also,” Pastor Crocker said. “We accept clothing, baby items, toys, footwear and household items. If people want to get rid of or sell a sofa, they can put a picture up on our wall in the church. Most of all, I want to thank the community for letting us do this and for supporting us as a community church. Ever since the fire in the church, the whole community wrapped itself around our church to get it back on its feet again in 2008.”

Pastor Crocker added that his favorite part of this event was greeting people at the door and talking to them. If anyone is seeking a community church where they will be warmly welcome, they are invited to attend Vegreville Alliance Church.

Subdivision and Development Appeal Board reach conditional approval Joe Machney Reporter The town of Vegreville Planning and Development held a development appeal board hearing on the afternoon of November 8, 2016. The hearing was in regards to the development application No. 10-10-16-144 Lots 22 – 24, Block 8, Plan 1743P in Vegreville, Alberta. The proposed application is to construct 2 canopy structures at 5106 50 Ave. Canopy A (West) 5,880 square feet and Canopy B (North) 1936 square feet all of which are non-compliant with the requirements of the current Land Use Bylaw 02-2013.

Cheryl Jebb from Hi-Way Registries felt that “it would block the east and west view on Highway 16A for our business and other local businesses.” H&R Block was concerned for the safety of people crossing Highway 16A at the intersection with 51 Street. Gillian Piper, owner of H&R Block felt that canopies would prevent vehicles occupants from seeing signage for her building.

The next day the Subdivision & Development Appeal Board reached their decision. The official decision is to overturn the refusal of the Development Application File No. 10-10-16-144 and the board have issued a conditional approval for constructing the proposed

canopies with the following variances to the requirements of the Land Use ByLaw No. 02-2013.

The variances include: The front yard setback must be a minimum of ten feet from the foundation of the structure to the property line. This is to keep the site lines for future and current development to the east and west.

The east side yard setback must be a minimum of nine feet from the foundation of the structure to the property line.

The rear yard setback must be a minimum of two feet from the foundation of the structure to the property line.

The west side yard setback must be a minimum of two and a half feet from the foundation of the structure to the proposed property line.

The required sixteen parking stalls has been reduced to nine stalls to be provided on site.

The conditions that Mr Hayduk, owner of the Garage, must adhere to are: The applicant must provide a parking plan that accommodates nine parking stalls on sire that meets the minimum requirements of the Land Use Bylaw 02-2013.

Both Canopy A and Canopy B must be enclosed.

Letter to the Editor I am writing this letter not as the Mayor but as a stakeholder in our business community.

In my 30 plus years operating businesses in this town, I would say for the most part I have felt supported and felt much cooperation between myself and my fellow business owners. However, events over the past few years have left me feeling rather discouraged on the state of affairs in our local business community.

In spite of my role in the governance of Vegreville, I will be the first to admit that some of our bylaws are not very favourable to some businesses. I understand that there is a process in navigating these items. In my role as Mayor, I often hear complaints that “we” (the Town) are difficult to work with. To defend this, “we” need guidelines to operate; however, through appeals and process these can and have been negotiated and modified. As someone who sits on both sides of this fence in my dual roles, I can definitely consider all viewpoints.

I own two businesses in Vegreville, and I have received large amounts of pushback regarding development and revitalization of both of them. Not so much from the Town, but from my colleagues and neighbours in our local business community.

Some of the complaints I have received have been warranted. When I first began developing my newest property I received complaints from my neighbouring businesses regarding my sign (which was not new but a pre-existing sign that was already there). In spite of this—I wanted to be a respectful neighbour. I modified the sign, which cost me a great deal of money—to appease their concerns.

I certainly consider the well-being of

my neighbours and fellow businesses when making decisions. However, some of the complaints I have received against my recent development permit were so outlandish and petty that I cannot help but to express my total discouragement.

Everything from “this business isn’t open to the public” (which, it is—since June of this year) to the question of “safety” that increased development would have on pedestrians trying to cross the street. I have also received complaints about the special events I have held—which is especially concerning because we reached out to all of our neighbours beforehand and gave them an opportunity to engage in any open dialogue they deemed necessary. These same businesses smiled and sent well wishes, but then turned around and complained about the way we conducted ourselves to their patrons as well as to our Town’s Administration. This is not a way I choose to do business.

In these tough economic times, we should be supporting each other to strengthen the fabric of our local economy and banding together to ensure that success of the individual can become the success of the community.

Since opening, we have drawn in patrons to our community from all over the world. While the nature of the businesses is more sales than anything else, in these tough times we are grateful that people are taking a second look.

It may seem trivial but every bit of exposure helps.

I would like to add that this does not speak to ALL of our businesses and that I am grateful to those who have reached out in support. I hope to continue working together to help promote a thriving community!

The fight to keep CPC in Vegreville continues Joe Machney Reporter The fight to keep the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville continues unabated as petitions, both online and in paper rack up signatures daily. As Mayor Myron Hayduk takes every opportunity he can to urge citizens to be vocal about how this is going to negatively affect the community he is being supported on all sides by his councilors as well as MP Shannon Stubbs and MLA Jessica Littlewood.

“We’re getting a lot of support from other groups like the Alberta Federation of Labor and the Canadian Labor council because these are people that are losing jobs that are unionized and they have pensions and other benefits that help their families,” MLA Littlewood said of the progress that she has been achieving.

“I asked the labor minister in Alberta to reach out to the minister of immigration office which she did and she’s been talking with them and has asked them to reverse the decision. I also have volunteers along with myself going door to door gathering signatures and we’re also supporting and sharing MP Shannon Stubbs Federal e-petition that she has sponsored. I am keeping in contact with the town and Federal Immigration Minister as well as the Union representatives. Both Shannon and I are in contact with the most inf luential people in respects to this situation. Out of the 150 doors that were knocked on in Vegreville, about ten percent of the people we met were from CPC.” But what are politicians outside the province of Alberta doing to bring attention to this issue? Hon. Rona Ambrose,

interim leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Opposition also felt that this decision would be a bad move given the current provincial environment. “Rural Alberta is hard hit. Oil and gas workers can’t find jobs, and families are getting punished by new taxes, including a carbon tax. The news about the Liberal Government’s decision in Vegreville would exacerbate this situation. With this misguided, devastating decision, Minister Sohi and the Liberals are making a bad situation there even worse. At a time when unemployment is crippling Alberta like we’ve rarely seen before, this was a shocking development to the families of Vegreville. Minister Sohi’s first act when he was elected was to renovate his Ottawa office at a cost of nearly $1 million. His second act was closing this immigration processing centre, killing hundreds of jobs in a small, rural community. This is a government that has ignored the jobs crisis currently sweeping through this province because they have never respected the resource industry that supports thousands of families across Canada. They’ve done nothing to attract investment to the province and nothing to give working families here in Alberta a break. Instead, they’re looking to take 280 jobs out of Vegreville, a move that will devastate a small-town economy that needs every single full-time job it can hold on to.”

Bewildered by the reasoning for the move, Ambrose explained that the only explanation anyone can find is that they prefer for those jobs to be in a Liberal-held riding, instead of a rural Alberta town.

“Canadians living in rural towns can see

that Prime Minister Trudeau’s plan for the economy has failed, even if he cannot. It’s difficult to believe, but since the Liberals took office, Canada has not created a single new full-time job. Not one. In fact, Canadians learned recently that the economy had lost another 23,000 full-time jobs. Now, hundreds more are being stripped away from Vegreville by this Liberal government’s actions. We are calling on the Liberals to take a look at what’s actually happening in this province, reverse this disastrous decision, and keep these jobs in Vegreville.”

“I would like to urge all party members to write to the Federal Government asking for a reversal of this decision. This issue should transcend partisan politics. We need to get behind Vegreville to preserve these jobs and the benefits they provide for the community,” Minister of Labor for Alberta Christina Gray said.

Bringing this closer to home, Doug Maclennan CPC Landlord felt that the importance of getting this right for the town must take precedence and will be planned carefully and methodically with all the information they need to make the best-informed decisions. “We’re looking at this from a positive point of view and we are doing whatever has to be done to retain this company within the community.”

To put into perspective the amount that CPC does for the community, they recently completed their annual Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign (GCWCC). The employees surpassed their monetary goal of $10,000 and raised an outstanding $12,400 and 1985 lbs of food. Monies raised were donated to local charities, such as VALID, SCARS, The Vegreville Breakfast Club, The Vegreville Preschool, KidSport Vegreville, Little Warriors and RADD, to name a few. All of the food

items were donated to the Vegreville Food Bank.

“We attended the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts & Counties (AAMDC) meeting this past week to lobby for support from the counties to keep the CPC in Vegreville. I found out that we cannot submit a resolution because we are past the date for any resolutions.

This necessitated an emergency resolution. We hired a consultant to help us with this and with the consultation of our consultant with the wordings from the counties and our own wordings, our councilor Mike Simpson put it together and had the draft submitted to find out that we had to have 600 copies of this ready to go. It had to get passed by the committee and the emergency resolution committee to see if it was going to be accepted. After the third try, it passed and then it got voted on and with a 92.11% win. The AAMDC are now going to send off letters of support and also to the Prime Minister’s office and to the National Board to seek support,” Mayor Myron Hayduk reported. “On Wednesday I got a call from the minister’s director of communications office and we discussed a few things about what they thought was fact and what I thought was fact, then he informed me that MP Shannon Stubbs is arranging a meeting with the minister and asked if I would like to attend, which I will do. This will be held in Ottawa within the next five weeks. Unofficially I have been told that I do have the support of our provincial government and that they will be sending in confirmation letters of their concern of us losing this centre. In total since October 27, I’ve spent between 20 and 30 hours on the phone about this.”
