Big Drum’s big film shoot Michael Simpson Staff Writer Students from St. Martin’s Big Drum grade 6 class were on location at the Train Station for a film shoot on May 16 for a DVD that they’re having made for parents and themselves as keepsakes of their time in the program. The shooting was done by Big Drum instructor Darren Salyn, who also

provides the instruments for the students to work with in this acclaimed musical adventure that sees multiple grades participating at different levels. Principal Ron Baier continues to be proud of his students for their work in the program, which recently saw them touring with shows in Camrose and Red Deer. “It’s unique and interesting in terms of musicality and quality,”

Baier said, adding that the value has been substantiated through various Wendy Brook Music Festival awards, as well as having the honour of being the first group to be allowed to play in the foyer of the Winspear Music Center in Edmonton last year, a show that was given the nod by Senator Tommy Banks. The Big Drum group will be putting on their free concert on the last Thursday

of May for parents and music lovers to come and check out. The music incorporates a mixture of blues, Latin, modern and classical to create its own fused blend of sound. Students typically receive one hour of instruction per week from Salyn, who has over 20 years of experience in the Big Drum program. “These kids have been provided with a lot of unique opportunities

[through the program],” Baier said. Elk Island Catholic School Board Trustees were treated to a show recently as well, which left the audience with much enthusiasm for the program, which Baier

said he is still grateful for all the support it received when it launched in Vegreville five years ago. “For the average elementary student, these are lifelong experiences.” Copies of the final DVD will be available at St. Martin’s School on request.
