Rosanne Fortier In any language, music speaks louder than words. This was the message that Onel Potgieter, locally renowned singer and inspirational speaker conveyed to a full dining hall during An Evening with Onel at Vegreville Alliance Church on February 28. Onel hails from South Africa. She grew up in a musical family and has been singing since she was four years-old. Her father was a big inspiration for her. Onel has lived in Viking with her husband, Manie and their three children since 2002. She sings professionally and has released three CD’s. Onel’s immaculate voice met low notes smoothly
and powered through high notes. She expressed through non-verbal means that her heart was in all her performances. Between songs, Onel wasn’t scared to touch on the joyful moments and tough issues as she illustrated stories from her life. She spoke about how
grace was a free gift from God before she sang one of her favorite songs, A mazing Grace. Following this, she described how Christians, especially her sister, faced the end of life with unquestionable faith, optimism and courage. Onel dedicated Celine
Dion’s song ‘Fly’ to her sister. Then she performed a song from her CD, ‘In Heaven’ which was about how her sister’s death left a void but her sister is now in heaven and there’s no place she would rather be; she’s an angel now whose wings will shelter her.
