Haubrick’s Angels Michael Simpson Staff Writer Fran Axenchuk and Michelle Ziegler are in training for not only the ride of their lifetime, but for longtime friend Don Haubrick’s as well.

The pair of ladies are registered in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer happening June 22-23 near Calgary, and are ferociously attempting to fundraise the required $2,500 each to be able to participate before the dead-

line.

Axenchuk and Ziegler met Haubrick while caring for his wife at Vegreville Long Term Care, a friendship which grew in the 9 years that Haubrick’s wife was in their care. “We’re like his daughters,” Ziegler said. “[This ride] is dear to our heart. It’s going to be tremendous crossing that finish line,” she said with a tear in her eye. “It’s not going to be because we’ve pedaled 200 km, it’s because we’re doing it for you, Don.” Haubrick, who has had

cancer for several years, has been an inspiration to the two with his zest for life and positive approach to living with the illness. “I don’t worry about it, why should anyone else?” he said simply. He said he’s received a tremendous level of care and support from the staff at the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton.

Both Ziegler and Axenchuk have purchased a pair of angel wing pendants, each giving one to Don. The other wings will be worn on their jerseys as they cycle.

“He’s called us his angels,” Axenchuk said. “So we’re each taking a wing across the finish line for him.” The pair said many don’t know of Haubrick’s battle with cancer because of his fullthrottle approach to living.

Fresh food for the working masses Michael Simpson Staff Writer A 50’s retro themed diner is bringing back the glory days of dining with its lineup of freshly made food for restaurant-goers that have a hankering for a meal that doesn’t taste like it came out of a box.

Oldscool Diner, nestled into Galleria Mall, held its soft opening in November, but is holding off on a grand opening until April, when the weather is warmer. Since November however, owners Lidia and Dave Cox have been welcoming new patrons into their fully licensed restaurant and showing the hungry masses what it means to fill up on fresh, delicious food the way dining out was meant to be before the days of processed ingredients.

Scratch cooking is nothing new to the family, with Lidia’s 74 year old mother bringing decades of experience as a journeyman chef to the kitchen. “She’s my backbone,” Lidia said with a smile. “She helps me keep everything running smoothly, and makes our fresh pies from her own mother’s original recipe.” The mother’s touch goes into everything on the menu, she said. “Our milkshakes are made with real milk and Chapman’s ice cream, without any of the chemicals you get in most other ice creams. Nowadays it seems when you buy a milkshake anywhere else, you’re hardly getting any dairy in it.”

“We’re making hand-cut fries to order,” Lidia said. “All the meat for the hamburgers is bought from a business here in town and we press the patties every day. We try and buy as many of our groceries in-town as we can including our veggies.”

Whole turkeys are roasted daily for sandwiches, bacon is sliced by hand, and real Caesar salad dressing is made fresh in the kitchen on a regular basis. Daily specials include classics like shepherd’s pie, pasta in homemade Alfredo sauce, stuffed chicken cordon bleu or oven-roasted

peppers stuffed with hamburger and rice.

You won’t find lettuce in your Greek salad, you can still get a hot dog or a chili dog at Oldscool, and the family friendly menu features a babyplate with veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy for little ones who are just cutting their teeth on solid foods. “That’s something that’s getting harder and harder to find at other restaurants,” Lidia said.

Toddlers can also enjoy macaroni and cheese, and finicky eaters will find that personal preferences will be taken into consideration when ordering.

“We can do chicken on your Caesar salad, we can skip the salt on your fries,” she said.

“We’re also sensitive in how we cook our food for people with allergies. We don’t cross contaminate our items when we’re cooking. Fish is fried separately, there’s no egg filler in our burger patties.”

After waiting for decades to

be able to open up her restaurant, Lidia said the experience feels good. “It’s like having a baby and watching it grow, it’s good to be doing what I want to do, and we want to make people feel welcome here whether they’re coming in from work in their coveralls or stepping out to enjoy a meal with their families. This restaurant has been a dream come true and thanks to my family, the Lord and the community it’s going well.”

BMO raffle funds donated to Minor Soccer

Staff at the Vegreville Bank of Montreal held a raffle over Christmas themed “Life without the NHL” and raised $568 through employees and customers who bought tickets. The proceeds were donated to the Vegreville Minor Soccer Association on March 7. The VMSA plans to use the money to help with their goal to revamp local soccer pitches in Vegreville to be able to host more local soccer tournaments. Final push for fundraising The requirements for participating in the ride are strict. “You either raise the amount and ride, or you don’t ride at all,” Axenchuk said. “Michelle is at $2,320 already, and I’m at $1,700.

We’re hoping to get support from the business community to help bring us up to what we need to ride.”

They began fundraising on October 22 of last year.

The Ride to Conquer Cancer is the biggest cancer support fundraiser of its kind in Alberta, even more so than the annual Terry Fox Run held across Canada.

All the money raised in Alberta stays in the province and sponsors can choose where they want their funds to be allocated from various cancer institutions across Alberta. “Very little of it goes to administration costs,” Axenchuk said.

Both Axenchuk and Ziegler are also collecting donations in the name of a loved one, which each will place on a piece of ribbon pinned to their jersey to take with them on their journey, which will see them start in Calgary and head west into the mountains before turning back on the second day to cross the finish line in Okotoks.

Haubrick says he plans to be there when his angels swoop across the line this summer.

Pedal to the metal The drive to raise awareness in the community via the Ride to Conquer Cancer began last year. “Michelle saw it on television and said to me ‘we’re doing this,’” Axenchuck said. “We went to the orientation night and they said it’s quite easy to fundraise. The family of Richard Kropielnicki, who was in our care when he

passed away, donated a generous amount to us,” she said. “200 km is not easy, we’ve got to train for this and we’re not young,” Ziegler said.

The pair have been keeping fit in the winter months with Zumba, Yoga, belly fit and boot camp classes. They will be using crossover bicycles with skinny tires for their trek “and lots of determination,” Ziegler added. A bit of grit will come in handy as the ride takes place rain or shine, snow, sleet, hail or sun. It isn’t their first ride however, having completed a ride for Multiple Sclerosis last year to the tune of approximately 190 km.

But this time, it’s personal.

“The Internet offers some of the most valuable tools to run a small business. But whether it’s marketing dayto-day communications with vendors, communicating with customers or ecommerce, there’s a risk of online fraud and data security breaches,” said Michael Bonner, Vice President, Commercial Banking, BMO Bank of Montreal.

According to the Government of Canada’s Anti-Fraud Centre, over 16,000 people are identified as victims of fraud every year, accounting for an estimated $54 million in losses.

Internet scams, virtually unheard of a decade ago, now cost millions in fraud each year. The Government

of Canada estimates incidents of this type of fraud have risen 77 per cent since 2005.

As data security breaches become an increasing concern for businesses and consumers, governments around the world are tightening their fraud regulations. The Canadian government, for instance, has proposed legislation that requires mandatory reporting of security breaches to the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

“Fraud is a direct threat to the success of our business customers. At BMO, we want to help business owners with precautions that they can take and provide helpful advice,” Mr. Bonner added.

BMO offers the following tips to help business owners minimize the occurrence of data security breaches:

1. Prevent Hacking: Talk to your financial institution about how to protect your online accounts from hackers and phishing scams.

This includes understanding what your institution will and won’t ask for by email, such as password and account information.

2. Limit Access to Account Data: Ensure that you have rigorous internal processes to manage functions like payroll accounts and bank transfers. All it takes is your account number and bank transit information to initiate fraudulent bank transfers from unauthorized sources.

3. Limit the Amount of Customer Data Needed: If it is not an essential element for doing business, do not store personal customer

data such as Social Insurance Numbers.

The donation, presented on March 6, was a major boost to the facility, which opened last year.

Clubs celebrated our founding – which took place on February 20, 1920. Each participating club received a kit that included cards that were to be handed out after an act of kindness was performed asking the recipient to “pass it on”. Together

these clubs came together and performed over 4500 acts of kindness, showing the country how together we put the KIN in Kindness!

Perhaps you were one of the recipients of an act of random kindness by your local Kinette club? These activities included the Kinette club packing groceries for a few hours at Baron’s No Frills, while handing out candy to children - big and small. While some of the Kinette’s (and little helpers - Carter

Baxandall and Drayden van der Torre) volunteered their time at No Frills, other Kinette members (and helpers - Kennedy Webb & Cale Stefan) enjoyed coffee visiting with some of the residents at the Century Park Assisted Living Complex.

The Kinette club would like to acknowledge the many people who they were able to bring a smile to that Sunday afternoon. The surprise and smile on so many faces was very rewarding!

the last week students eagerly looked forward to this evening and continually asked their teacher, Ms. Magnus, “Is today Dad’s night?” “I can’t wait, I’m so excited!” “How many more hours?”

Finally the special night

arrived and the sound of hammers on precut wood sections produced a grand array of beautiful bird houses built by the students and their dads. It was a great way for dads and their

children to bond and experience education in a different way. Socialization and munchies capped an enjoyable and productive evening.

Justin Trudeau spoke about honoring the fundamental rights of every human being in this country during his visit to Vegreville on January 26.

Rosanne Fortier Citizens in Vegreville had a chance to meet MP Justin Trudeau on January 26 at Vegreville Train Station.

“I believe in measuring the fundamental rights of every human being in this country. The 21st century for me is a step forward to go from recognizing that

everyone has rights to moving to the fact that everyone has value,” Trudeau said during his speech while on tour in Vegreville. “We can no longer allow questions of our society to be stuck in survivor mode or have people have to choose between working extra hours and going to school. We need to allow people to get educated, be retrained and go beyond just getting by … to be able to contribute to their community and their work.

If there is one basic need that every human being has beyond food, shelter and clothing, it is [that] we’re social animals, we need to believe that we matter to our tribe and have value to the people around us and the people we find important also find us to be important. What we need to do is create that value, feel that value, which we do by our contributions as employers, employees, family members, community members and people who serve in your community as elective representatives.”

Trudeau is continuing his cross-Canada tour with a total of eight contenders.

Most recently, Trudeau was accused of backing out of a debate challenge from former astronaut and leadership hopeful Marc Garneau.

The new leader of the Liberal party will be announced on April 14.

SHAPKA, Lena On March 8, 2013 Lena Shapka of Vegreville passed away, from complications of a stroke, at 94 years of age. Lena will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Evelyn; son, Rolland (Dzintra) all of Edmonton; sister, Anna Serbu of Vegreville; and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. Predeceased by her husband, John; son, Robert (Bob); parents; four brothers; and five sisters.

Public visitation was Thursday, March 14, 2013 from 7:00 p.m.9:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 4814-50 Street, Vegreville. Funeral was Friday, March 15, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Vladimir, 5146-48 Avenue, Vegreville.

PREIKSCHAS, Clifford James Nov. 11, 1957 – March 11, 2013 On Monday, March 11, 2013, Clifford James Preikschas of Vegreville, Alberta passed away at the age of 55 years.

Clifford is survived by his loving family; special friend Linda Bosse; daughters Belinda (Andrew) and Melissa; one son James; two grandchildren Kori and Kassandra; two step-children Amy (Silas) and Dale; one step-granddaughter Emma; one brother Gary (Wendy); four sisters Kim (Scott) Joyce, Karen (Shane) Gladden, Judy and Laura; one sister-in-law Kim. Clifford was predeceased by his parents Hans and Vera Preikschas; one brother Randy.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. at Autumn Rose Funeral Home in Vegreville, Alberta with Pastor Wes Stefanec officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations may be made to the “Charity Of One’s Choice.”

Phil Rowe Submitted On Feb 25, 2013, The Vegreville Fire Department donated old firefighting turnout gear to the CAFSA (Canadian Aid for Fire Services Abroad). CAFSA is run by a firefighter from St. Albert, who arranges for old gear, uniforms, trucks, ambulances (you name it, they will take it) to distribute to fire services in Central and South America.

According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection

Association) and OSH Standards, once our equipment turns a certain age, it must be retired or not be used for active firefighting.

Countries in central and south America are not using anything for fire protection gear. The donation of old gear is a blessing to those firefighters. Most firefighting equipment has a shelf life of 10 years from the inservice date. After that we will not put our firefighters at risk with outdated gear.

Melanie Fedorvich Submitted On February 19, the Lamont Bantam Hawks won the Hockey Alberta Zone 2 Championship earning them a berth in the Provincial Tournament in

Claresholm March 14-17, 2013.

The road to the Zone 2 title started with a series against Mannville. The boys started a little slow in Game 1, but managed to pull off a 3-1 win heading

back to Mannville for Game 2, which resulted in a 7-2 win for Lamont and a ride into the next round.

The Hawks then faced Mallaig, edging them out in Game 1 with a 6-4 win.

The return to Lamont for

Oyen, and Claresholm in the round robin of the Provincial Tournament.

This team was fortunate enough to win the provincial title back in 2011 and are hoping to reclaim their spot at the top.
