Communities Choosewell 3rd Iron Chef Challenge Lisa Topilko Volunteer Vegreville Coordinator The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association spearheads the Communities Choosewell initiative, encouraging Albertans to “Eat right and be active.” One of the challenges they put forward in 2013 was the 3rd Annual Iron Chef Challenge held on a Saturday in November in the NAIT kitchens in Edmonton. Jodi Chadney, Vegreville FCSS programmer, and her daughter Cyena competed against two other teams. Each team consisted of an adult and a youth, and each team had 1.5 hours to prepare two items. The two required ingredients were ground bison and beets. Jodi and Cyena submitted their recipes prior to the challenge: Hearty Bison Soup and Beet Muffins. Jodi states that she and Cyena always cook with simple, fresh ingredients, avoiding processed foods wherever possible. They exhibited great teamwork, and
faced the challenge of Choosewell interviews before, during, and after the event. Having video cameras and probing questions in your face while you’re cooking is a new concept for the two of them! Three professional chefs did the judging, and all three said they would pay money for the Hearty Bison Soup; it was THAT good!! The Edmonton team were the winners in this challenge, but Jodi and Cyena represented our area very well and came home with some good prizes, too! And Vegreville FCSS qualified for a Healthy Initiatives grant. Jodi and her committee will be putting their heads together so look for details soon! The next ARPA challenge involves those who work with youth aged 13-19 years. http://arpaonline.ca/news/
