The caller wanted to drop the female off at the RCMP Detachment but the female got panicky and demanded to be let out, so she was.

June 9 13:45 Two drivers attended the detachment to report a collision. One noted signs of liquor consumption and breath samples were demanded. The female refused to provide samples and was charged accordingly and released on a promise to appear.

17:21 911 hang-up ended up being a female that had swallowed multiple pills. The female was located and taken to the hospital.

18:15 A traffic stop for expired registration. The driver was noted to of been drinking which resulted in his licence being suspended and his vehicle being impounded.

19:39 911 report of an erratic driver.

The vehicle was located and the driver was spoken to however there were no signs of impairment.

June 10 02:55 Report of a suspicious vehicle in Mundare. Members approached a female and the vehicle ended up bring stolen out of Edmonton. The female was held for a hearing.

04:11 Report of a vehicle found in the ditch. Upon investigation, an odour of marijuana was detected and found in the vehicle. An occupant was released on a promise to appear.

16:39 Report of loud music being played by a neighbour. The landlord attended and the music player is being evicted.

16:40 Report of an intoxicated male at the exhibition grounds who was intoxicated. The male was arrested because he was under conditions not to consume alcohol.

June 8 12:20 Report of a suspicious male that went to a yard trying to sell paving services. The male was somewhat evasive in his answer but when later contacted by police he said that he was a legitimate paver.

One of the drivers was ticketed for failing to proceed safely.

June 9 00:19 Report of a suicidal female. The female was located and taken to the hospital and then sent to the hospital in Ponoka.

08:22 Report of a vehicle hitting a piece of farm equipment that was being towed on the road. The female driver of the vehicle was ticketed.

01:40 During a traffic stop an odour of marijuana was detected and the occupants were arrested and a search resulted in the finding of a marijuana joint and 16 tablets of fentanyl. The occupants were arrested.

02:50 A member on patrol observed a male exit the driver’s side of the vehicle and appeared to be attempting to urinate. Signs of liquor consumption were noted and the male refused to provide breath samples so he was released on a PTA. 04:23 911 report of a domestic in progress. Members attended and determined that a female had bitten her boyfriend.

The female was arrested and brought back to the detachment.

During the week 8 false alarms, 3 false 911, 1 animal strike and 78 calls for service were made in total.

Human beings, not human doings Joe Machney Reporter If you’re not doing something you are sick, lazy or tired.

Period. There is no other way of looking at in today’s society.

Yet again I’m going to pick on USA and Canada. We in the West have built a world upon this belief structure. The more you do, the better you’ll be. Perhaps this should be reversed.

The more you be the better you’ll do.

Let’s explore this. By being, I am talking about how you treat your fellow man, your neighbor, your hairstylist, and even the animals and plants. Everything is energy and energy has a consciousness to it, so what you give out is interpreted by others at some level. Your thoughts and emotions are felt. If you are an empath than this can be really intense and at times unbearable.

People think that thoughts can remain hidden but they cannot, they crystallize and eventually take form in the manifest world as a reality, object or situation. The idea of thoughts create reality was derived from this and if one keeps an open mind the truth of this cannot be denied.

So why then do we feel we need to do so much in this life?

Seeing events that should be treasured as perhaps a means to an end to accomplish yet another material goal. Was it worth it?

Was it time well spent? Did you really put your heart into it?

This is where being comes in. When you are being without the obligation of getting something done then you can cultivate the finer virtues of life. People who have been warmly remembered long after they’re gone have been because of how they treated other people. The love and value that they made the people feel. Self-worth and self-esteem are often one of the most fragile things for humanity and when another comes along and gives people unconditional love just because it feels like the right thing to do, that will go so much further than them building a house for them even though they don’t really want to do it.

Time is often an excuse that people use when the job needs to be rushed or done in a heartless and thoughtless matter, yet if one considers that time is an illusion then this excuse is no longer valid. There is always enough time. The sooner you take that out of the equation or see it as not as big of an influence upon your way of life, the sooner you can begin to put more of your presence into what you are doing.

Every morning, before you get out of bed, don’t ask yourself what do I need to do today, but consider the idea of asking yourself, how am I going to be today. Am I going to be kind to the people that are rude to me? Am I going to be unconditionally loving towards others while expecting nothing in return?

If you give this a go, let me know how much more light it’s brought into your life. I’d be safe to say that it has made your life better in more ways than you could imagine, and less tiring as well!

Hypocrisy is rampant Letter to the Editor It’s praiseworthy to unite like-minded conservatives under one political entity. This July both the PC and Wildrose parties will vote to merge into one entity called the United Conservative Party. The proposal, while laudable on its surface, raises some serious questions about the motives and integrity of the architects of the merger.

Among the fundamental principles of conservatism is the basic tenet of limited government. Thus the Wildrose party’s popularity soared on a wave of opposition to the landowner Bills 19, 36, and 50. Not surprising, the PC party’s popularity correspondingly dropped. What happened?

Simply put, those in power stopped listening to Albertans, and concluded that a centralized authoritarian government was preferable to a messy democratic process that allowed for local participation. To exacerbate matters the bureaucracy

90 Years Ago – June 15, 1927 The general store and implement business hitherto conducted by Hughes & Co. Ltd. at Lavoy, has been purchased by Patterson & Co. Mr. Patterson enjoys a wide acquaintance throughout the district having been owner at Vegreville of the present Burns Creamery and he also managed the creamery at Innisfree for a time for the Burns Co. According to a phone message received by the Observer from Whitford on Tuesday, the Standard Bank of Canada opened a branch office at that point on Tuesday, June 14th with Mr. Hill as acting manager. The future town of Whitford is expected to become quite a sizeable place even before the arrival of the steel on the Cutknife-Whitford branch of the CPR. The Bathgate Post Office has ceased to exist. Our friend Frank Walker decided to give up in favor of the easy life and the bright lights of Ryley, and no willing incumbent could be found to take his place.

H. A. Wener, of Vegreville, has been appointed mananger of the “Manufacturers Sales Agencies.”

Mr. Bruce Gibbons of the local branch of the Bank of Commerce, who has been relieving at Kitscoty for the past week, had been transferred to Stony Plain.

75 Years Ago – June 17, 1942 Mrs. J.S. Reid was advised last week by telegram that he son, Sergt. Ian McLaren Reid, was reported missing after air operations on June 9th. He had just recently completed his training and has been engaged in flying operations on the coast of England.

Up until Wednesday noon, June 17th, the immediate district has been favored with something over one and a half inches of rain since Monday, much needed and just the right stuff for growing crops.

Main street in front of the Vegreville Drug Co. was a land of milk and honey, lacking the honey, when Dave Fyfe’s milk wagon tipped over on Wednesday morning and spilled quite a lot of mild on the road. The milk was not entirely wasted as some brisk dogs got a breakfast out of it and wish to thank Mr. Fyfe for his involuntary donation.

Capt. Ken Watts, who was with the 19th Alberta Dragons here for several years, has been accorded the rank of Major. Major Watts has also been transferred to the Camrose training centre.

50 Years Ago – June 15, 1967 Sixteen year old Norma Ferguson learned officially on Tuesday that she had set three new provincial track and field records for the juvenile, junior and senior women’s 80 meter hurdles at Edmonton on June 4th. Miss Ferguson, a member of the Vegreville Legion Track and Field Club has been selected to take part in the national trials at Saskatoon June 23rd and 24th.

“One hundred years ago the nearest village to the area now known as Vegreville was Winnipeg. Buffalo were plentiful in this area, the North Saskatchewan River was the main travel route, and about 50 fur traders along with about 50 other men who panned for gold in the river were located at sites which now are known as Edmonton and Pakan.” With this observation J.G. MacGregor began his story of Vegreville and district at the official opening of the Vegreville Centennial Building last Friday afternoon.

Members of the Royal Canadian Legion and citizens of Vegreville observed Decoration Day at the Riverside Cemetery on Sunday, June 11th. A parade was formed up at the cemetery gates and marched to the veterans’ plot where a wreath laying ceremony was carried out by Frank J.W. Fane, M.P. and an address was delivered

by Very Rev. Father McNeil of Edmonton.

25 Years Ago – June 16, 1992 Canadian Wheat Board commissioner William H. Smith has died while on an official visit to China. Smith, 55, slipped and fell Tuesday while travelling on a boat in the remote province of Hubei.

He died of a stroke later that day. Lorne Hehn, chief commissioner of the wheat board, said Wednesday.

Personal Care Aide (PCA) graduates from the Vegreville Long Term Care Centre are Cory Kryzanowski, Cheryl (Kachuk) Heier, Marion Baxandall, Crystal Bell and Shirley Lonetz. The PCA program was developed by the Alberta Vocational Centre to ensure consistent on-the-job training for nursing attendants who work in Alberta’s Long Term Care facilities. Learners are registered with Alberta Vocational Centre and progress through the curriculum is at their own pace in a systematic program of self-study.

European travel experiences were brought back to Vegreville by students from the VCHS. Thirteen students from VCHS travelled to Europe during Easter break with 10 students from Slave Lake. The tour included England, France, Holland and Germany. Upon their return VCHS students Allison Peel and Nicole Powley shared their experience with their classmates in Social Studies 20.

The Fifty-Year War Gwynne Dyer As Israeli columnist Gideon Levy wrote recently in the daily Haaretz: “In retrospect, it should be called the Fifty-Year War, not the Six-Day War. And judging by the political situation, its life expectancy appears endless.”

This week (5-10 June) is the 50th anniversary of the brief war in 1967 that added the Old City of Jerusalem, the West Bank, the Golan Heights and the Gaza Strip to the Israeli state, increasing the area ruled by Israel by one-third and the population under its control by more than a third. But the problem was and remains that all that new population was Arabs. Palestinians, to be precise.

No Israeli Jew actually wanted all those extra Arabs, but it turned out that quite a few of them did want the extra land – and now they knew that they were strong enough to keep it if they wanted to.

That was an intoxicating notion for Israelis, and the new territories actually added to their security by giving them some “strategic depth”. (Before they captured the West Bank, Israel was only 14 km wide at its narrowest point.) Moreover, the West Bank had been part of historic Israel 2,000 years ago, and many Israelis saw it as land sacred to the Jews.

So Jews started settling throughout the conquered lands with tacit and later open government support, to the utter dismay of the Palestinians, and the Fifty-Year War began. It has mostly been a fairly lowkey event, with only dozens or hundreds killed each year, but it is unrivalled in its ability to stymie all attempts

at a peaceful settlement.

Only three months after the 1967 war ended Amos Oz, later to become one of Israel’s most celebrated writers, wrote: “We are condemned now to rule people who do not want to be ruled by us. I have fears about the kind of seeds we will sow in the near future in the hearts of the occupied.

Even more, I have fears about the seed that will be planted in the hearts of the occupiers.”

How right he was. The political high ground in Israel is now held by ultra-nationalist, hard-right parties that are in thrall to the half-million-strong Jewish “settler” population in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Most Israelis want to keep these lands, including some extremists who would kill or die to keep them (like Yigal Amir, who in 1995 murdered Yitzhak Rabin, the last Israeli prime minister to enter into serious negotiations with the Palestinians).

No Israelis want to include the Palestinians in these territories into Israel as citizens. If they ever did, half the voters in the next election would be Arabs, and Israel would no longer be a “Jewish state”. But they can’t get rid of those Palestinians either without committing a horrendous crime.

So they are stuck, and Israeli politics has been paralysed for the past twenty years. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, says he wants peace, and no doubt he really does – but he also wants to keep the land, or at least most of it, and his coalition government would collapse if he ever seriously considered giving it back.

The great majority of Jewish Israelis, living in “old” Israel within the pre-1967 borders, rarely focus on this question, but they would be just as divided and paralysed if they ever had to answer it. This is not the end of the Fifty-Year War. It may just be the mid-point in the Hundred-Year War. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose articles are published in 45 countries.

Century Park Open House Rosanne Fortier To celebrate Seniors Week and to get people to see what Century Park does, an Open House was held on June 9.

Recreation Coordinator, Sean Fehir, said Century Park is a good place to live because it is centrally located in the Town of Vegreville and is right beside the library which is very accessible for seniors.

“We are also behind Vegreville Seniors Sunshine Club Centre. We held this open house to get seniors to see what we do over here and so the seniors can get

an understanding of our recreational program. We do walking club, BINGO, balloon table tennis, and a lot of festive events where every month we feature something different,” Fehir said. “We are trying to make Century Park more like a home instead of like a facility. We don’t wear scrubs and wear our home clothing instead. Seniors having choices is a huge priority to us. They get to pick a lot of their own activities and events and can suggest some also.”

Visitor, Peter Traudt said the residents were lucky because his wife used to live at Century Park and they do so much for the residents.

This event offered free or by donationregular and sugar-free cookies and coffee. Century Park is now operated by Optima Living.

June is Stroke Month – know the signs and what to do Alberta Health Services A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain (ischemic stroke) or the rupture of blood vessels in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). The interruption of blood flow or the rupture of blood vessels causes brain cells (neurons) in the affected area to die.

The effects of a stroke depend on where the brain was injured, as well as how much damage occurred. A stroke can impact mobility, sight, memory, speech, reason, and the ability to read and write.

Stroke is a medical emergency. It’s crucial to call 911 or get to an emergency department immediately if experiencing signs of a stroke, even if the symptoms pass.

General symptoms of a stroke include: sudden numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of movement in your face, arm, or leg, especially on only one side of your body; sudden vision changes; sudden trouble speaking; sudden confusion or trouble understanding simple statements; sudden problems with walking or balance; a sudden, severe headache that is different from past headaches.

F-A-S-T is a simple way to spot the main symptoms of a stroke. F = Face. Is it drooping?

A = Arms. Can you raise both? S = Speech. Is it slurred or jumbled? T= Time. Don’t waste it. Call 911 right away. Acting quickly can improve your survival and recovery.

Co-op Customer Appreciation Day

Rosanne Fortier On June 9, the Vegreville and District Co-op Customer Appreciation Day was full of sharing memories, saving and obtaining money, and indulging in good food.

When people entered the parking lot, they noticed the immaculately kept vintage vehicles sponsored by the Iron Runners Club. Two of George and Velma Sample’s vintage vehicles were at the show. George said his red 1949 Mercury was their farm truck that they had for 60 years. “We used it till 1990 as a farm truck which we hauled grain with. After we retired, we didn’t use it for about 15 or 20 years. So, we decided to pull it out and restore it,” George said. “This 1951 Pontiac, we bought from a lady in 2003. This car has never been restored; everything is original on it. The first owners never drove it for 20 years.” George added that he likes belonging to the Iron Runners Club which he has been for about 15 years. He mentioned that they have good friendships with people because they have common interests with them.

Inside the store, people were treated to free coffee and donuts while they received their equity cheques from Past and Present Directors of Co-op. Vegreville and District Co-op in 2017 returned $120,193 to its members on purchases made in 2016. Meghan Schiewe said she and her daughter, Sadie enjoyed the donuts because the Co-op makes really good donuts.

Other customers explored all the good buys at the Co-op Shopping Centre and Gas Bar.

Around 11 a.m. citizens purchased beef on a bun complete with drinks and snacks. The Vegreville Minor Soccer Association sponsored the Beef on a Bun Sale. The funds will go towards support of a new soccer park. Vegreville Co-op generously doanted all the pre-made buns, beef, and food.

SPORTS Slip and slide slow-pitch tournament

Joe Machney Reporter The second weekend in June has always been a special time for ball players who make the trip out to Myrnam to enjoy the Myrnam Crooked Shooters Ball Tournament. But a few games of slow-pitch is not the only reason people attend the Myrnam arena ball diamonds. On Saturday night, a beer fest is held in the arena and this year nearly 500 people attended the beer gardens. DJing was provided by C and G DJ Services and kept the floor packed with solid dance grooves and country tunes, with the occasional 70s or 80s rock song thrown in for the old-timers.

The ball tournament began on Friday at 7 p.m. as thirty teams welcomed the three day tournament and ended Sunday evening with A, B, and C champions. The winner for

the A Final was Sinking Liners who took the game with a score of 16 to 10 against the Swamp Donkeys. In the B Final, Dinosaur Pile Up won the game 19 to 11 against the Mermen.

The Lloydminister Slow-Pitch Association won the C event in a mercy win over the Loose Cannons.

Each year the Myrnam Crooked Shooters donate money earned from the tournament to local organizations, such as the New Myrnam School, Myrnam Ag Society, and others.

Throughout the event a concession booth was run in the arena by the Myrnam School and Parent Council that sold hamburgers, chips and chocolate bars. The town also plays a role in assisting the Crooked Shooters, by prepping the fields for game day. “We use the Myrnam Fire Department who helps us to bounce during the beerfest,� Jeff Yaremchuk, a member of

Although the weather was not particularly cooperative this year, dedicated people who have come year after year to play ball and not forfeit their games endured the rainy and cold weather to make the tournament a success. Some of them were rewarded with a warmer Sunday as the weekend of ball came to a close.

“We’ve been doing this for 35 years and it’s been very good” says team member Dennis Machney.

Local teams came from Vegreville, Ryley, Holden, Tofield, while other teams came from as far as Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, and Olds. The round robin style tournament was put on as part of the Holden, Farmer’s Days celebrations. Vengeance from Edmonton took first place in the A event, while RBL took second place in the A event.

“Unfortunately with the weather being what it was, the beer gardens were a little slow this year,” Marc Lochhead, who helped to organize and host the event said. “Same for the concession.

Most people went back to their campsites to stay in their trailers to keep warm. We still had a resilient group out there though who did support the beer fest.”

Two raffles were held during the tournament. One was a liquor basket full of bottles of liquor and the second raffle was a bat and swag prize which included a bat, t-shirt and model tractor. All proceeds from the raffle baskets, which totaled $500 were donated to Holden Minor Baseball.

“I feel the whole event ran smoothly, regardless of the weather,” Marc said.

“All the teams were ready to show up and play their games. They’re always there, rain or shine, as well as the Fire Breathing Rubber Duckies team, was all there to make sure that the event was a great success, which I felt it was.

To Feed, or not to Feed?

Mike Hewitt Vegreville Fish and Wildlife Officer That is a question that I hope to help you to answer. I believe that it is human nature to want to help, and I see that desire when it comes to wildlife on a regular basis.

This is more evident when wildlife has made its way into our towns and cities. Often people think that the animal is hungry and they believe they are helping it to survive, while others simply want to see and get close to the animal.

Often, the negatives that come with feeding wildlife are not readily apparent or are ignored.

This past summer there was a young white-tailed deer buck (male) in Vegreville that was hanging around town.

It came to my attention and I attempted to persuade it to leave town. That worked for a short time but then the deer came back. As the days went by, I was told that the deer was being fed by local townspeople, as I had suspected. I was shown pictures of people feeding the deer and was told by people (sheepishly on some occasions) that they had fed it themselves. I was told that people were getting their kids to feed and pet the deer as pictures were being taken. I knew that there must be something drawing the deer into town besides gardens and fruit trees as a deer will not normally “hang” around like this one was.

What are the negatives about feeding deer that are in town you might be thinking; below are some negatives that may come with feeding deer or other wildlife.

It keeps wildlife coming back. Feeding wildlife keeps them in town; increasing chances of a collision with a vehicle; this is bad for both the animal and for us relating

to injury or death. This doesn’t include financial considerations It can change their feeding patterns, habits and what they were taught especially when they are young. May have difficulty in re-establishing those habits when back in the wild.

May be feeding wildlife food that has less nutritional value than they require or can even be improper diet and could cause death to the animal When it comes to deer, males become more aggressive during the mating season in the fall and could cause injury to people Wildlife is just that “wild”, all wildlife can be unpredictable. Wildlife can become aggressive when protecting their young or a food source. When they are being fed, this is what they consider a food source Consider if you are the person who doesn’t feed the animal and the animal is expecting food from people and is not given any food. They associate people with giving them food; this could lead to aggression from the animal If species that are prey to another animal are fed this could draw predators into town. Example; feeding deer can bring predators such as cougars into town. We don’t want that.

What they soon find out is that it is more expensive to have a job than they thought,” shared Ms. Benning, grade five teacher. and received a lot of laughter in return of jobs well done. Way to Go! June 1 was an early start for the grade fives as they headed for a field trip to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. Once there, the students were split into three groups with each group receiving one map, one pencil, and one score pad with missions/chores to complete.

“For about four hours we were scrambling around the village completing challenges such as finding a ball, purchasing groceries, pumping water, feeding pigs, going to school, having a tug of war, solving the blacksmith’s puzzle, lifting cream cans at the train station, learning about the meaning of the church domes, grinding wheat to make flour,

and shovelling, hoeing, and cutting grass to make a firebreak around the grain elevator. We also learned a new Ukrainian dance and some Ukrainian words as we helped the people in the village. We loved being able to run around and trying to find the clues, being able to travel back in time and experience life as a settler, and being locked up in the Provincial Police Office for a little while,” explained Ms. Benning.

At the end of the day on Thursday, Mrs. Godziuk and her grade twos gently carried out their precious cargo of Painted Lady Butterflies that they cared for from the cocoon stage all the way to the day that they emerged! The release couldn’t have happened on a better day. The warm sun was shining with a gentle breeze blowing to help the dainty little butterf lies take flight for the first time!

The students followed the butterflies around the front yard of the school for a while and had the chance to hold them to get a closer look!

The grade 1 and 2 music class has been rehearsing a musical version of the story of Chicken Little.

“It’s kind of like a Readers’ Theatre with musical sound effects,” explained music teacher, Mrs. Godziuk. As the musical group settled in, the foyer filled with student guests ready to hear the real story of what caused that questionable stir on that sunny day.

Each musician played or sang their part as Mrs. Godziuk narrated the entire story. A loud applause closed the wonderful performance. Awesome job everyone!

Joe Machney Reporter Seventy men with ties to the Myrnam Highway 45 Boys, better known as M.A.F.I.A., got together on Friday, June 2 to celebrate their 14th annual BBQ event at Jackfish Lake (J. Dudar Park Gazebo). The Highway 45 BBQ Steak Dinner allowed people to get reacquainted, reminisce, and discuss their latest medical issues, which doctor they are seeing and of course their grandkids,” said Ron Metrunec who has been a long time member and attendee.

“This event has a strong following that has between 70 -85 people annually.

Every year there is always someone attending for the first time who can easily reminisce with a friend from 50 years ago. It’s a great setting to get reacquainted with old friends. We have people from as far away as California and Vancouver Island attending,” El Haluschak, who attended the event and has been an integral part of the gatherings throughout the years.

Nestor Saskiw emceed the event and

welcomed Myrnam Mayor- Ed Sosnowski and Two Hills County Reeve, Allen Sayler.

Catering was provided by Gloria and Burnie Kerluke, and Janice Pidruchney with grace being said by Ed Wowk.

The door prizes were supplied by the County of Two Hills with the winners being Albert Boratynec, Marshall Dutka, John Kaluzniak, Larry Melnichuk, Eugene Romaniuk, and Ronnie Saskiw.

Lamont farm safety - CONTINUED from front PAGE and Bruderheim attended the event. The students ranging from kindergarten to grade eight were split up into ten groups. Each of the groups enjoyed the ten farm safety presentations that lasted twenty minutes each and went on throughout the school day.

The presentations included water safety, electrical safety, rail safety, chemical/fertilizer safety, large equipment, grain safety, fire safety, transportation, large animals, and small animals.

“It’s been ten years since we’ve put this on, and there’s been a really positive response this year, despite the gloomy weather,” Heather Atkinson, Communications Coordinator for Lamont County said. “The children had a nice time and all of the presentations went over really well.”

“The Farm Safety Day went really well, we were able to get away from the rain,” Terry Eleniak, Agricultural Fieldman said.

“The feedback that we had from the teachers and from the kids as well is that every-

body thought it was a big success and they’re glad that Lamont County along with the sponsoring Ag societies had put it on.”

Lamont County was the main sponsor, which is broken into other departments being the Agricultural Service Board and FCSS. The Ag societies include Mundare Ag Society, Lamont Ag Society, Chipman Ag Society, Andrew, and St.

Michael Ag Society.

“With the government announcing Bill 6, this was the optimum time to make sure that this event happened, not only from the kid’s point of view but the county’s, as well as from the farmer’s point of view,” Terry concluded. “We are open to not have it for another ten or thirteen years, we’d like to have a more reoccurring event. “

RCMP Resources RCMP Ponderings Sgt Jerry Nutbrown - Vegreville Detachment The RCMP members you will see the most are those of us that work here and are responsible for policing the area. I thought I’d let you know about a large number of others that are RCMP employees that take calls for assistance when we need them to.

Our neighbouring detachment coworkers will at times come into our area, as we do theirs, to assist if we need extra members. Typically it is Two Hills and Viking members that may help us out. An integrated traffic section consisting of RCMP and Sheriffs will make appearances in our area to conduct traffic enforcement. If we had an incident involving water, typically a lake or slough, we may call in our Underwater Recovery Team. These members are trained and have all the equipment to go into water and search around. One resource we have used is our air support group. These members can be used for remote access, search and rescue or as support for vehicle pursuits. There is nothing better than having aircraft that isn’t seen or heard above following suspects thinking they got away.

Another group we have worked with in our area is our Auto Theft Unit. These members know all about various vehicles and equipment and when we are dealing with stolen property, they are an excellent resource. They are also extremely knowledgeable in the offences related to stolen property and these prosecutions. If we have a really serious incident we may call our Major Crime Unit to assist. This is a group I worked with on many homicides and that is their area of expertise. These investigations can be very time consuming and ongoing for years. This unit oversees investigations in every detail through to a trial.

One of our members here is part of the Special Tactical Operations team.

This would be a team we could call that would help address civil security or assist with a large scale search. We have other units such as the Technology Crime Unit, Integrated Child Exploitation group, Behavioural Sciences group, Forensic Identification Unit, Explosive Disposal Unit, Police Dog Services, Emergency Response Team, Drug Unit, Integrated Border Enforcement Team (although we don’t have an international border in our area), Media Relations, Organized Crime group, and the list goes on.

So as you see, when us as RCMP members are contracted for providing policing to a municipality or county we come with a lot of resources that people likely aren’t aware of. This is what helps

us to be able to respond to major incidents such as the Slave Lake and Fort McMurray wildfires. I have not listed all the groups and units that are available to us here to consult with or receive assistance from but there is a lot of experts that back us up in our duties. Hopefully the Vegreville area never needs this type of assistance, but know that if we did, they will be there for us and could have boots on the ground in short order.

Also there have been a million hobbies that I have taught them, including singing, piano, gardening, painting, physical needs training at home on balance boards, resistance bands- I could go on and on, point being that they were being well taken care of.

So after coming back from an appointment, kids freshly bathed – salmon, veggies, and rice cooking on the stove. But this time I had an open beer, so even though there have never been any altercations of any kind with alcohol in my life and there was absolutely no evidence or paperwork, C.P.S. and two police officers forced their way into my home and took both the kids and never let us say goodbye to each other.

I have noticed a high volume of stories about missing or wronged children, mostly indigenous, but wanted you to know that it is also happening to other children as well.

My primary concern is how this can happen to anyone, at any time, and that Canadian citizens, Albertans in particular, have absolutely no voice or rights every time that this happens.

I was not allowed to speak my case at court, was told that I could speak at the next one a few days later on Monday. On Sunday night an email arrives with one sentence in it saying that court was moved 4 months down the road without any explanationexcept to say that it is extremely common.

For almost a month I was not even allowed to speak to or know anything about my kids, and when I was told that I could visit them, in a town an hour away, I arrived and my children were not even at that location, just a police officer in a failed attempt to entrap me.

I finally got paperwork with a little box on it that is checked beside the word ‘neglect.’ One of my representatives and I were looking through the

C.P.S. act and they absolutely did not follow due conduct and refuse to even respond to how they still have no evidence, other than what someone said on the phone.

The problem is, even after following all of the absurd conditions that have now been placed on me and my children do come home and are freshly bathed, fed and happy again, that there is still nothing stopping anyone from phoning in again, probably C.P.S. themselves to make easy money off of vulnerable families, and saying whatever comes to mind to falsely incriminate me with no evidence with something - maybe next time they will say that I rape my kids. Who knows?

There are a thousand examples of how they are neglecting my kids, they have not been getting their vitamins, are not going to their swim lessons for physical therapy though I was told to pay for them, are no longer going to attend summer programming etc...

But the point is that it can happen to anyone, at any time, and can keep happening indefinitely.

At least from what I have learned C.P.S. IS up to their ears with cases like mine and there are more and more cases of justice being had popping up, very slowly.

But it would be nice to let the world know. Many families are unjustly in a tremendous amount of pain.

These are truly beautiful children, used to be happier than the world, and now are scared.

When I did finally just see them, my son had a large cut on his head and the worker refused to tell me how it got there - a pretty big detail to have left out.

At least it is on record.

VVA CORNER Technology has evolved to the point where one can draw, sketch and paint, without the use of paint or charcoal or ink and only using tablets and computers. There are many programs that one can choose from to create graphics, pictures and the like, but...... we dare to say that everyone started out using a pencil, a crayon or a marker at some point in their life. Whether they progressed beyond these simple tools, or it had more to do with interest, experience,

opportunity and motivation.

The simple HB pencil, a common tool still for many, has surely been the reason for early doodles and drawing. What inspiration comes from this graphite tool, is perhaps a result of the user’s imagination and purpose. From a simple pencil, one can progress to a variety of coloured pencils, pastels and other “pencil like” tools to create art work.

Vegreville Visual Artist, Catherine Dowhaniuk, is a young artist, doing just this, exploring the world of art as it relates to her life. From a young age, her Mother was her greatest inspiration by offering Catherine her first memorable art experience.

Enrolled in art classes throughout school from kindergarten through grade twelve, she didn’t find the medium of her choice until early 2011, many years

after she had graduated. Doodling and drawing, did not really give her any inspiration until she found a passion in the world of tattoos. Seeing the many different styles and artists who worked in black and grey to full colour, she felt further inspired.

It was here where she found a revolving door of inspiring artists and images that curved the lines between traditional art and fantasy. To this day she continues to turn to the tattoo community for inspiration when creating her art pieces.

Catherine was born and raised in North Edmonton, before meeting her husband and moving out east to Vegreville in 2013 to help run the family farm, Destination Gardens. Graduating from MaKami College for Massage Therapy in 2009 and adding Bowen Therapy to her list of modalities in late 2010, she was fortunate enough to be able to open her own business in the heart of Vegreville in September 2013; Catherine Dowhaniuk Bowen Therapy and Massage. Her career and love of art complement one another. Her belief is that artistic movement and creation can be therapeutic, meditative, provide relaxation, and a chance to de-stress, to unwind and to escape from reality, if even just for a little while.

After about a year practicing realism, drawn from photography, Catherine moved from simple HB pencils to more professional artist pencils. The use of different levels of graphite in the pencils allowed for more dramatic shadows and depth. She started to work in coloured pencils shortly after that, working mostly with Prismacolor, as they had the most colour selection.

More recently she has experimented with Luminance, a pencil with more pigment then wax, making the lead softer and allowing it to cover more surface area with less sharpening.

It wasn’t until a few years ago that she began work using pastels.

She turned her large kitchen chalk board into a canvas. Using brightly coloured pigments on the black background, seemed to make the colours pop, drawing the eye towards the image. Her

creativity results in the many colours, blending and creating texture, making large pieces that are meant to capture and stimulate the imagination.

“The kids were pretty excited and overall we had a pretty good time there,” Coach Chirag Mali said. “The support from the students

was awesome, everyone was cheering everyone else on. Some kids struggled a little bit, but we had some real high achievers, which was great. An example was we had a kid finished second last but as he crossed the finish line he had his arms up in the air super happy.”

Basketball club ends great season

Mark Kobelsky Coach It was an exciting spring for girls’ club basketball in Vegreville and area. The program has grown such that we have a U15 team and a U17 team. Entering their first season, the U15 girls had 2 league wins and showed great growth, both as a team and individually. They also had ladies from Ryley and Holden to help us form our team.

After a slow start, the U17 team was undefeated in league play until the gold medal match. They lost to the Spruce Grove Rockets by 10 to become the EYBA league’s silver medalists. The U-17 team also traveled to Saskatoon to participate in the 18th annual Prairie Dog Classic. The highlight of the tournament was a come from behind win against Yorkton.

Both teams did their best to represent these clubs, businesses, and the community of Vegreville in Edmonton.

Rosanne Fortier On June 6, musical gems from the local group, Harmony were the ingredients to make Seniors Week bright for residents of Vegreville Manor and the public.

This band is composed of Phyllis Tarapacki, John Kusick, Peter Karbeshewski, Steve Mudryk, and Iris Mudryk.

The entertainment kicked off with an old time waltz and continued with 16 more energetic performances that the audience clapped their hands to and danced. John was on vocals for the song, ‘Before the teardrops fall’ and a few other songs which he sang. Phyllis performed English and Ukrainian vocals for many songs. One performance was Cajun music. Phyllis requested the audience to sing-along to, ‘You Are My Sunshine’ while she sang part of the song in Ukrainian.

Refreshments were served after the entertainment and three prizes of goody bags were won from the free draw.

The audience applauded after each of these performances. Jennie Zaborowsky said she really liked the music and felt the performances were really good.

Georgina Stark added that she thought the music was very good and that she always attends events where Harmony performs.

Jean and Walter Romaniuk celebrate 76 years Joe Machney Reporter Seventy years is a long time and the love that can grow between two people that have spent so much time together was shown in the eyes of Jean and Walter Romaniuk as they celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on June 7 with friends and family at the Mary Immaculate Care Centre in Mundare.

The event began in the afternoon as people gathered around for cake and ice cream. A speech was given by Jean and Walter’s nephew Rennie Kozack which highlighted their long life together on the farm with their family.

“Harvest time was when everyone came to the farm to help take the crops off the field

and haul grain to the elevators,” Rennie Kozack said. “The coffee breaks were best remembered during harvest for the taste of the meat sandwiches and aroma and taste of the coffee. One particular year the boys wanted to go goose shooting but could not because of harvest. On the way to the elevator to test the grain for moisture they sprinkled some water on the grain. Guess what!? It was too wet to harvest and the boys went south and had a great shoot!”

Jean and Walter have four children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Their youngest son, Leon passed away in 2008. During special occasions, most of the family got together to celebrate Christmas, birthdays, Mother’s and Father’s Day.

Brian said taking care of the environment is just a normal thing to do for him. “Why would we not want to treat the environment good or anyone good for that matter? It’s just the right and only thing to do. Everything we do has a consequence and will affect us eventually.

“I have a simple life where I don’t consume a lot or buy a lot of resources. I have solar panels on my house which doesn’t take much power. I have a small house and I heat my home with a rocket stove that I built myself. This stove burns the wood hotter and burns three times less wood, so, there is less smoke coming out of the pipes this way. This heating method actually keeps my home

too warm. I use solar hot-water heating for my domestic water. I have big windows on the south side of my home which is passive solar heating. You let the sun in during the day and there is a shutter that closes the window at night.

My electricity and hot water comes from solar energy. This is good for the environment because then I’m not burning the fossil fuels. I am using the sun as much as I can,” Brian said.

A vegetarian can live on one-tenth of an acre of land and the meat-eater takes about six acres of land to live on. It’s a karmic thing because everything has consequences,” Brian said.

Brian said that he recycles everything he can; plastic and cans and bottles. He tries to consume the least he can of these materials because he doesn’t like to buy stuff that has to be thrown away.

“I grow a big garden and I can my own vegetables. I also have a greenhouse.

This saves the environment because if you buy your food at the grocery store, it takes a lot of traveling to get it there which has a big impact on the environment. It’s healthier to grow my own because then it’s organic.”

Larisa Sembaliuk helps students create mural Rosanne Fortier Larisa is an accomplished Canadian artist who was born in Edmonton and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Alberta. Larisa illustrates children’s books and educational text and has received international attention, acclaim and numerous awards Humans are meant to be creative and creating a mural is an excellent way to commemorate 125 years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada! On June 7th Larisa Sembaliuk Cheladyn demonstrated to Miss Fedorouk’s Grade 3 Class at A.L. Horton School on how to draw a picture on a tile.

Larisa began the presentation by showing drawings that could be used for inspiration. She gave suggestions on how to draw a pysanka and various other objects. Larisa stated that what was really neat about sunf lowers was the petals have attitudes and some are fat and some are skinny while others look like a sunset.

snowflakes have six sides and are a bit hard to draw and it’s advisable to divide it.

Larisa gave these art presentations at the Ukrainian Bilingual Classes from kindergarten to grade six at A.L. Horton School during the week.

All the students created an art piece on a tile using sharpies for a mural to commemorate 125 years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. The tiles will be mounted on the wall at school.

They had it last year and it went well so they decided to

do it again this year,” Coach Tyler Van Berkel said.

“The best event was the para shot put and although Colby didn’t place the kids were so excited to be there,” Chirag said.

Goslig, a grade 11 student, in the 400m, 800m and 4 X 400m relay and Sean Doherty for the discus throw,” Tyler said. “One thing about Nathan is that he wears normal shoes with a hole in one of his shoes and on his feet he wears wool socks.”

The following weekend was provincials. Nathan Goslig finished 10 out of 16 for the 800m race. For the 400m he finished 11th and for the 4x400 relay the team did not make the final. Colby Rogers ran the 200m and ranked 7 out of 8.

“Colby’s mom was super proud of him,” Tyler said.

Sean Doherty finished second in discus, throwing 39.8 meters. The winner shot a 42.5. “He had a very good day and the potential to go gold, but he was still very happy with his provincial silver,” Tyler said.

“So overall the day at provincials was good,” Tyler concluded.

“I felt the morale was really high throughout the day,” Chirag said. “It was great to see Sean medal, and teaching Colby all year and seeing him get to that level has been a milestone in my career. With Nathan, he and I got along great and him running with a hole in his shoe and still beating kids at a provincial level was fantastic!”

A greate day of track and field

Joe Machney Reporter Students from AL Horton Elementary spent June 8, 2017, at VCHS enjoying a warm and sunny day of track and field.

Grades one through six participated in events that were of a similar nature to high school track and field and the kindergarten students got to do more fun things like the hula hoop toss.

“Grades four to six did more of the competitive events like hurdles and high jump,” Principal Greg Probert said. “The lower grades did a standing jump and long jump, things like that.”

A pre-ordered lunch was provided for the students. “We tried to keep it pretty basic this year because in past years the high schools prepared our lunches so we tried to simplify it this year,” Probert said.

The events for the day included standing long jump, ball toss, and hula toss for the

lower grades. High jump for the upper grades and hurdles were for all the grades.

Running long jump was for the upper grades as was the track events, being the 50 meter, 100 meter, 400 meter and the relay race.

“There was great support this year. For each of the groups, most of the staff were running the events so they know more of what’s going on with them and the parents were volunteers for the grouping, which was great,” Probert said. “Usually we go the other way, but the parents often don’t know what to do with the events and they know how to manage the kids.”

In total there were 375 students participating and some senior high students were helping out as well with the events. “Some of the senior high kids got their volunteer hours out of helping out here,” Probert concluded.

Rosanne Fortier Many parents and children are anticipating an interesting and full summer as they registered for programs at the Summer Registration Night at Vegreville Centennial Library on June 6. The registration night was organized by Vegreville Centennial Library to show what summer programs and camps Vegreville and area community organizations are running throughout the summer that parents and kids can register for. The community organizations at the event were Parent Link Centre, M.O.D.E.L Project, Sizzlin’ Summer, St. Martin’s School KinderCare program, Vegreville School of Ballet, Vegreville and District Child Development Coalition, Community Association for Lasting Success, Drea Lee Dance Camp, and Lions Spray Park.

Council in favor of School Resource Officer program continuing Joe Machney Reporter On June 12, at the bi-monthly Council meeting, Vegreville Town Council voted 5 to 1 in favour of locking in the School Resource Officer position for another three years as well as committing funding for the program.

Councilor Tim MacPhee was opposed to the program and feels that the taxpayers shouldn’t subsidize County kids who benefit from the program while the County of Minburn doesn’t pay.

As the topic continued, it became evident that the broader conversation is about conflicting values. Much of Council believes that the social benefits outweigh the fiscal costs of the program. Councilor MacPhee felt that the costs of the program are too high though earnestly felt that it is a good program.

When the program was initially put on the table, Councilor MacPhee was opposed to it at that time as well, along with Councilors Rudyk and Brodziak, who have since changed their opinions and are for the program continuing. ”We have to do what’s best for the community,” Mayor Myron Hayduk said. “Even Councilor MacPhee thinks it’s a good idea, and he voted against it, but he doesn’t think that the town should be paying for most of

it. To be fair I think it should be done on a per capita basis, and the County does not want to participate in this program whatsoever, so it’s just boiling down to dollars and cents. But if this program makes a difference in one student per year then it is worth the investment. I feel it also helps with dysfunctional homes. Without this program, if mom and dad have a fight then the police come and break it up, and the kids only see the police when there’s trouble happening so they equate police with trouble and this becomes their future perception of police. What this program does is it shows students that police are there to help them out, that they are their friends.”

The Mayor’s attitude is that the program is expensive for the town, but looking into the future it is a worthwhile $85,000 to $95,000 investment.

“It’s a great, beneficial position for the community and it’s going to continue to benefit the community going forward,” Constable J. Gagnon said of the program being continued. “When I was in school if a police car showed up, something bad was going down, but when people see my car parked out front, something amazing is going on in there and everyone’s excited.

That is what the position is all about.”

Mayor’s meeting and The CPC Joe Machney Reporter From June 1 to 4, Vegreville Mayor Myron Hayduk attended The Federation of Canadian Municipalities Annual Conference and Trade Show in Ottawa.

The CPC resolution which was brought up at the conference passed with 95.1% of people in favor of it and 4.9% opposed.

Myron felt that there was much support from the people who attended the conference. “This was not only for Vegreville, but for every rural community across this nation. After learning about their requirements for having a federal facility, just about no rural community in Canada is going to be eligible for a federal facility because their big thing is a transit system and a post-secondary educational facility in the community,” Myron said.

“The conference itself went very well and the support that we got for the resolution from the approximately 200 delegates that attended was good too.” “The criteria provided to the Town by the federal

government for the closure would make it impossible for any community to host a federal facility,” said Vegreville Mayor Myron Hayduk. “The government made this decision without any public business case, no clear benefits, and no consultation.”

When the resolution came to the floor it was supposed to be presented by the President of the AUMA, and instead they called Myron Hayduk up first.

“The resolution at FCM was so important, unless the government changes how it makes these decisions, what happened to Vegreville can happen to any community.” Two years ago, the Prime Minister spoke here at FCM in advance of the federal election and he told us: “We need that to make sure that local needs are acknowledged, that local priorities are acted on, and that the federal government is held to its responsibilities, financial and otherwise.” Today we want the government to live up to that commitment.
