RCMP files from July 17 - 23 Joe Machney Reporter July 17 09:31 Report of a break and enter to a garage in Lavoy. A vehicle was entered as well as an ATV and other items were taken and then later recovered near a field. Still under investigation.

13:53 Report of a complaint of a semitruck towing two flatbed trailers that were weaving in and out of traffic on Highway 16. The driver was located and charged accordingly.

July 18 00:25 Report of a single vehicle collision three miles east of the Mundare turn-off. Patrols were made and the driver was located. The driver sustained minor injuries, however, no further action was taken.

07:53 Report of a single-vehicle collision near Range Road 855 and Township Road 540. A driver swerved to miss an animal and sustained minor injuries after hitting the ditch. He was taken to the hospital and later released.

July 19 08:18 Report of a complaint of a person on the ground thrashing about.

RCMP and EMS attended and took the female to the hospital. It was concluded that it was likely a drug overdose.

11:45 Report of a suicidal female wanting to attend the hospital but would only go with the police. RCMP attended and transported her to the hospital without incident.

17:53 Report of a female calling to say that a man walked into her house and passed out in her bathroom. RCMP and EMS attended and transported the man to the hospital for further assessment.

20:28 Report of a suspicious male in an alley in Vegreville. RCMP attended and found that the individual was the homeowner working in his back yard.

July 20 08:22 Report of a woman calling to say that her Esso points card number had been fraudulently used to purchase gift cards in excess of $300 at the Mundare Esso. Still under investigation.

08:42 Report of another person complaining about their Esso card number being used totaling 1800 points at the Mundare Esso station.

10:44 A call was received from a local business saying that there were two young girls wandering around the store.

As the RCMP was investigating the mother of one young woman called saying that her daughter was missing and they were reunited shortly afterward.

14:11 Report of a male calling to complain that his hedge and flowers had been run over. RCMP attended and spoke to both parties involved. It was decided that both parties would work it out themselves and that the incident was an accident.

16:20 A local resident called to report that his dealer had sold him bad cocaine and that he wants his dealer put charged and put in jail for selling him bad cocaine.

23:49 Report of a false alarm at a local business.

July 21 01:15 Report of a false alarm at a local residence.

02:16 A male called the police to complain that his girlfriend had broken his windshield and stole his wallet. Police attended and the male denied phoning the police and denied that anything happened. Both were intoxicated. The female was arrested and spent the night in a cell.

Two suspicious vehicles were found tearing around the gravel roads. They were stopped and cautioned.

09:01 911 complaint of a speeding vehicle doing 150-160 kilometers per hour heading west bound on highway 16. Strathcona and Fort Sask were advised.

16:53 Report of a stolen vehicle being located at the Esso in Mundare. The vehicle fled upon seeing the RCMP. However, the environment was too dangerous to pursue. Neighbouring detachments were advised.

19:15 A member queried a licence plate that did not match the vehicle. The driver was taking it on a test drive with his own licence plate attached. There was no bill of sale and it was not insured. The seller of the vehicle was charged for allowing someone else to drive without insurance. The driver was charged with misuse of a licence plate.

07:31 Report of a good Samaritan finding the wallet that belonged to the intoxicated male from earlier in the morning. The wallet was returned.

10:31 Report of a CRA scam.

13:38 Report of a residential alarm going off. RCMP attended and the area was secure. It was determined that heavy machinery could have caused the alarm to go off.

14:44 A local man reported that his bag, wallet and personal mail was stolen out of his vehicle. He had discovered that his Home Depot card was used in Edmonton in the month of June and that nearly $15,000 was charged to his account. The matter has been referred to the Edmonton police.

23:24 Report of a false alarm. Members attended and the area was secure.

11:52 Report of a cougar in somebody’s yard. They elected to call the RCMP because they are not getting a call from Fish and Wildlife. Fish and Wildlife and the RCMP tried to call the complainant, however, he did not take the call.

15:31 Complaint of suspicious people around Veg Mechanical. RCMP attended and learned that one male had warrants out of Calgary. He was arrested and lodged in a cell in Vegreville.

17:41 911 report of a vehicle driving erratically from line to line on Highway 631. Patrols were made but the vehicle was not located.

21:01 Report of attempted break and enter to a gas plant north of town. The perpetrators broke through the gate and were possibly scared off by the intruder alarm. No suspects were found, still under investigation.

23:17 Report of a complaint of a fatal collision scene posted on Youtube. The Poster was contacted and told to remove it out of sympathy for the family.

During the week 2 false 911, 5 false alarms, 2 animal strikes and 81 calls for service were made in total.

Everyone needs encouragement Joe Machney Reporter When you come into this world you are greeted by people who love you, your mother being the first person. This is both a scary and exciting moment in the sense that you have spent the last nine months in a secure and comfortable place and finally the moment has arrived to take on the world.

As we do this the nostalgia often lingers in our consciousness and then takes a back seat into our subconscious as a memory that never really fades away. There is a reason for this. It is the security, that connection to mother that we always need. This has a deeper level to it and has to do with our connection to the one Spirit that is within everything. This is the true nostalgia that we feel and as our life continues we always have that memory within us. The love that we feel we try to find outside because we are taught that what we need is outside of ourselves. This is not true, however, it is how

most people view the world and see their lives.

Encouragement from others is a reminder that we are valued and that we serve a purpose in this world. It takes great strength to stand alone and if the patterns that we are conditioned by do not teach us this paradigm of self-love then it is confusing to feel so alone and unappreciated in the world.

A big part of our life is often spent working and when people invest so much of themselves in a job it is important that they feel that what they are doing and accomplishing is appreciated to some degree. The more it is valued the more the individual will want to do better. This strengthens the feeling of being accepted and brings up a further sense of community and oneness with their fellow man. The end goal being a return to where they began, the womb of creation, where we all came from. This is love, what we are all after and what the foundation for encouragement is.

When people feel encouraged they feel loved, when they feel loved they feel valued. When they feel valued they are able to let their true self shine through, bettering the world, the people in it and themselves a well.

The harmony that comes from taking a few moments out of your day to acknowledge something positive about another person can work wonders and be just what the person needed.

Is it too much to ask? Is it too hard to find something to encourage about another? If it is then ask yourself, do you value yourself? Do you love yourself? Your inner world creates your outer world and if you refuse to compliment or encourage another then quite often you have some deeprooted issues about self-acceptance that you are ignoring.

People are more transparent than they think they are and the mask you hide your true self behind often has cracks and there is only so much glue and makeup that you can cover it with before the cracks come through and are visible, even on the cloudiest of days. Are you picking up what I’m throwing down here? Love yourself and then naturally that love will flow out from you to others as words of encouragement and inspiration. The harmony and productiveness that will come from it will move mountains and help to bring our crippled society into a better place.

Businesses need to invest to grow and prosper, what better investment than to encourage the people that work for you or with you, so that what you have to offer will be the best that it can be because it was made by people who feel valued and worth something.

Tobin’s Caboodle focuses on variety Joe Machney Reporter Debbie Tobin is a tenacious lady who pays attention and listens to what people have to say. When she had the pub last year, she remembers people coming in thinking that her establishment was a store. This was not a one-off comment though and taking that to heart and seeing it as an omen for a change in direction Tobin took a brief pause in between closing the Tobin’s Warf Pub and Eatery and opening her new variety store, which she calls Tobin’s Caboodle and Needful Things.

Opened for a couple weeks already, she and her husband Leo, feel that this is just what the village or Myrnam needs. “We decided that Myrnam needs some gift wear so that every time there’s a birthday you don’t have to run all the way to St. Paul or Vegreville to buy something,” Tobin said. “So we have local craft people bringing in items such as wooden signs and quilts. We’re also trying to cater to the bikers as well as we’re selling bath bombs and specialty soaps.”

Trying to cover a wide range of interests, Tobin’s Caboodle also carries camping and eventually hunting supplies such as knives will be on the racks for people to check out. “Basically we’re

trying to sell everything that the grocery store next door isn’t selling, to give the people of Myrnam a better shopping experience,” Tobin confirmed. “So we’re trying to cater to everybody and

carry the small stuff that they might need.”

90 Years Ago – July 27, 1927 Wener’s Bakery obtained new honors at the Edmonton Exhibition last week, when Mr. Lambert, head baker, was accorded third place in a completion involving 100 professional bakeries in Alberta. It is a notable win in such strong competition and is also a tribute to the excellence of the products of the Wener Bakeries. When a local industry can turn out goods of such uniformly high standard, it seems foolish to pay more money for stuff not so good, produced out of town.

For the most part, all wheat sown in the district, except that extremely late, is now in head and is showing up very well. Some crops have been knocked down by heavy rains and wind but, in general, the wheat throughout the district is standing up very sturdily, with strong straw, well developed heads and a promise of a real return when harvest commences about August 15th. Course grains are certain to produce good yields. Weather conditions do not affect them to the same extent as wheat. There are no signs of any wheat diseases, either of straw or head, in this district at present.

75 Years Ago – July 29, 1942 Questions in the minds of farmers these days are answered by Walter S. Campbell, Regional Representative, Wartime Prices and Trade Board; Q. Will the production of farm machinery be reduced?

A. Yes – with a few exceptions, such as milk machines, cream separators, and one or two others, there will be decreased production, although there will be an increase in the production of machinery parts. Q. Can a farmer move a tractor from a dealer’s to his farm using marked gasoline? A. Yes, by obtaining a permit from the Provincial Fuel controller. Q. Can he move a tractor from farm to farm using marked gasoline? A. Yes, a distance of 10 miles is permitted. Q. Is there any danger of a shortage of milk cans? A. The production allowed is 10% over 1940 in any year and with the increase of production, milk cans will have to be used continuously. Q. Are exchanges of goods between farmers under the ceiling? A. No, but if sales are made to person other than farmers then the ceiling prices apply.

50 Years Ago – July 27, 1967 Members of 4-H Clubs from Powder River County and Prairie County, Montana, were given a rousing welcome to the Vegreville district at the Recreation Centre on Monday night at a program arranged by Nick Chomik, D.A. and Elizabeth Durie, D.H.E. under the auspices of the Vegreville Chamber of Commerce and the Vegreville Exhibition Association. About two hundred and fifty persons gathered at the Recreation Centre to welcome the exchange visitiors.

Art Baxandall and Ron Knydyk cheerfully accepted the chore of cutting steaks for the annual Vegreville Firemen’s Picnic held at the experimental farm on Saturday night.

A team of American Scientists toured the Solonetzic soils research underway in Alberta. Studies at Coronation, Kavanough, Lamont and Vegreville were visited. J. Bond, Director of the US Dept. of Agriculture, Research Station at Mandan, North Dakota, led the group. Among others were, Dr. A. Grable, Research Co-ordinator for the Great Plains region of the United States and Dr. F. Sandoval, Solonetzic Soils Research Scientist. It is estimated that North Dakota alone has four million acres of Solonetzic soil. They are mainly interested in the possibilities of deep plowing. Studies of this have ben underway at Vegreville since 1959

25 Years Ago - July 28, 1992 St. Joseph’s General Hospital in Vegreville has recently received a three year accreditation by the Canadian council on health facilities accreditation. The achievement represents compliance with national standards as well as assurance to the public of high quality in service and care provision.

On Monday, July 13 representatives from the County of Minburn presented municipal long service awards to employees with 25 years or more of service and on councillor with more than 15 years of service. Central office administration employees Larry E. Powley (29 Years) and Orest Olineck (31 years) received watches for their long service contribution; along with public works employees Bill Kuchik (25 years), Paul Pasieka (25 years), Peter Nedzielski (29 years), and Peter Grykuliak (30 years) and councillor Mike Barlott (22 years).

County school board employees, represented by the Alberta Union of School Employees, voted in favor of strike action against the County of Minburn No. 27, board of Education. The outstanding issues include: wages, benefits and sick leave. The employees who were unionized late last year, are seeking a first agreement with the county.

A provincial grant of $12,501 will assist with the cost of recently completed street improvements in the town of Vegreville announced Al “Boomer” Adair, minister of Alberta Transportation and Utilities.

Poland: The Road to Autocracy Gwynne Dyer If you are wondering why the European Union is “very close” to stripping Poland of its voting rights in the EU’s Council of Ministers (the closest thing the EU has to a government), the answer lies in something that the Polish foreign minister,Witold Waszczykowski, told the German newspaper Bild recently.

The government he serves “only wants to cure our country of a few illnesses,” the foreign minister explained. Diseases like “a new mixture of cultures and races, a world made up of cyclists and vegetarians, who only use renewable energy and who battle all signs of religion.”

The true Poland that Waszczykowski claims to represent, by contrast, values “tradition, historical awareness, love of country, faith in God and normal family life between a woman and a man.” It is “real Poles” (conservative, Catholic and superpatriotic) against the manifold evils foisted on the country by ill-intentioned foreigners and the corrupt Poles whose loyalty they have bought.

In this struggle, it is right and necessary that the government run by real Poles (the Law and Justice Party) takes control of the media, the courts, the civil service and all the other institutions that might hamper its crusade to cleanse the nation of secret Communists and liberal traitors. And the EU’s objections to all this just prove that it is part of the plot against Poland.

Paranoia and self-pity dominate the nationalist discourse in Poland – and now the nationalists are in power. The Law and Justice Party won the presidency and an absolute majority in Parliament in the elections in late 2015,

athough it only won 37 percent of the vote. It is changing the law in ways that threaten not just the independence of the courts, but democracy itself.

The former Communist-ruled states of Eastern Europe desperately wanted to be members of the EU as a safeguard against renewed Russian interference in their affairs. The EU insists that all its members be democratic, and carefully defines how democratic states should behave. A basic principle is the separation of powers: the courts must not be under government control.

So when the Law and Justice Party introduced laws letting it fire judges it doesn’t like (including, potentially, the entire Supreme Court) and choose the new judges who take their place, it ran headon into the EU’s rules for membership.

That’s why the EU is now close to stripping Poland of its voting rights until it restores the independence of the courts. If that doesn’t work, it could resort to financial measures as well.

Poland is by far the biggest beneficiary of transfers from the EU budget to poorer member countries: in the budgetary period 2014-2020, it is scheduled to get $96 billion. Some or all of that money might stop coming if it were no longer a member in good standing.

Nor can the Polish government plausibly threaten to quit the European Union: 75 percent of Poles see EU membership as a vital counter-balance to the looming presence of Russia to their east. The EU holds all the best cards in this game, if it chooses to play them.

But will it?

That is not clear. The EU is not famous for its willingness to take bold action, and it would have to overcome the opposition of Hungary, another ex-Communist EU member that also displays authoritarian tendencies. But the throngs of protesters in the streets of Polish cities deserve its support, and its own cohesion will suffer if it does not defend its fundamental values.

Perogy popularity at Senior Centre Joe Machney Reporter Alongside the Myrnam One Day Fun Day was the Senior Centre’s Annual Perogy Lunch, which followed right after the Myrnam parade and gave everybody who hadn’t spoiled their appetite with candy and other treats the chance to have a lovely perogy lunch which was put on by the talented ladies and gentlemen at the Seniors Centre in Myrnam.

“Last year we had around 150 to 200 people come through here and it looks like the same amount this year as well,” Raymond Yaremchuk, President of the Senior Centre said with a smile.

Guests enjoy a meal at the Senior’s Centre Perogy lunch on Saturday.

“People who’ve had roots in Myrnam have come back to see how the village has changed and get caught up with old friends and old times. It was great to see all these people come back to visit.”

The menu was, of course, Ukrainian food, just what the people ordered. “There’s a variety of desserts here as well as perogies, ham, beans, and all kinds of different salads,” Raymond said, proudly as people passed him with full plates.

“The cooks this year are the great culinary artists that we had last year. Mary Chomlak, Gloria Hladunewich, and Debbie Axley, Frances Yanitski, Katie Romaniuk, and the Laschowskis.”

The full house made for a lively noon lunch that

went well into the afternoon as the conversations and good eating continued.

Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture announces winners for second annual competition Eric Dalke Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture media contact The Alberta Young Speakers for Agriculture has announced the winners for its second annual public speaking competition for Albertan youth to share their passion about the agricultural industry. The competition was held July 12 during the Calgary Stampede and offered youth ages 11-24 an opportunity to share their views in a speech on a topic important to Albertan and Canadian agriculture.

“We’re excited to announce the winners of the second year of this exciting communications competition for Albertan youth at the Calgary Stampede,” said Eric Dalke, AYSA founder.

“Congratulations to our winners and all the youth from across Alberta who gave excellent speeches this year. ”Chancey Lane from Claresholm, Alberta won 1st place in the Senior competition Quinten A lbrecht from Holden, Alberta was the Junior winner.

Both spoke on the topic, “Working in agriculture is

more than just farming”.

“The quality of the speakers this year was tremendous,” said Deb Hart, incoming AYSA President. “This competition is about giving the young leaders of tomorrow the opportunity to learn, grow and succeed in Canadian agriculture.”

The AYSA competition offers youth the opportunity to compete with a five to seven minute speech on topics important to the agricultural industry.

Winners have the opportunity to win a cash prize of up to $1,000 and will be eligible to compete in the Canadian Young Spea kers for Agriculture comp e t it ion in Toronto.

Trudeau should accept responsibility for spending choices Troy Media On the campaign trail in 2015, Justin Trudeau’s Liberals promised to hold federal deficits to $10 billion or less during their first few years in office before returning to a balanced budget in 2019-20.

Unfortunately, that’s not how things turned out.

The Liberal government’s deficit this year is expected to reach $28.5 billion. And the government won’t commit to a specific timeline to balance the books.

In a recent press conference, Prime Minister Trudeau blamed the deteriorating condition of federal finances on the previous government, claiming he inherited an $18-billion “baseline deficit” in his first year in government. This is a remarkable and unjustified exercise in blame shifting. In reality, the Liberal government’s spendthrift ways are a key reason for the largerthan-promised budget deficits.

In the 2015-16 fiscal year, when the Liberals were

elected, federal program spending totalled $270.9 billion - a 6.7 per cent increase over the previous year. This increase was a function of the Conservatives in the first half of the year and the newly-elected Liberals in the second half.

The Conservatives, led by Stephen Harper, planned to spend $263.2 billion in their 2015 budget. The Liberals assumed power in October 2015 and program spending ultimately increased by $7.7 billion to $270.9 billion. Since revenues ended up $5.2 billion higher than planned in the 2015 budget, the government recorded a small deficit of $987 million, equivalent to 0.3 per cent of total federal spending.

The next year, with the Liberal government fully in charge of finances, spending increased by 7.4 per cent. Except for the post-recession spending in 2009-10, that’s the highest year-over-year increase

by Ottawa since 2006-07. That dwarfed the average annual increase in federal spending over the preceding six years (1.5 per cent).

Fast-forward to the current fiscal year.

The government plans another significant boost in federal program spending - 5.0 per cent. All told, the Liberals will have added $34.6 billion in new program spending over the past two years (not counting any extra spending from 2015-16), a 12.8 per cent jump.

While it’s true the economy has slowed since the Liberals assumed power, dampening revenue growth, these marked spending increases have no doubt contributed to the larger-thanpromised deficits we see today.

Despite a weaker economy, the Liberals could have kept the deficit to $10 billion this year (2017-18) by exercising some spending restraint and limiting the total increase in program spending over the past two years to $19.1 billion (or 7.0 per cent). This level of spending growth, incidentally, would have more than offset cost pressures from rising overall prices (inflation) and a growing population.

In short, if the Liberal government increased spending more modestly, it would have kept its promise of a $10billion deficit this year and been on track to achieve a balanced budget

To govern is to choose, as the old saying goes, and it was the Liberals who cut the rope on several short-lived fiscal anchors in order to facilitate a spendthrift approach to governance. They should accept responsibility for the consequences rather than shifting blame to a defeated government that has been out of office for more than a year and a half.

Canadian students get top marks in financial literacy Troy Media When it comes to financial literacy, Canadian youth are among the best in the world. That encouraging finding is the result of the first-ever Canadian participation in a global assessment of youth financial literacy.

Canada came second among 15 countries - tied with Belgium - in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) on financial literacy, recently released in Paris. Approximately 3,400 students from seven Canadian provinces took part in the survey, which is administered by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

According to the results, 87 per cent of these Canadian students demonstrated at least a baseline level of financial literacy, defined by the OECD as allowing them “to participate fully in modern society.” Twenty-two per cent of Canadian students demonstrated advanced levels of financial literacy well above the OECD average.

These findings are a vote of confidence in our national strategy for financial literacy, Count Me In, Canada, and reflect the many efforts by provincial governments and other organizations to reach children and youth. Some of the more detailed findings point to the progress we’re making. They also reveal areas where we can further collaborate to build the financial literacy of our young people.

Canadian students who discussed money matters with parents tended to score higher, with those discussing money matters at home once or twice a week ranking the highest. This aligns with one of our ongoing messages: start talking with your kids about money early and do it often.

We know conversations at home are crucial, but how do we encourage them?

At the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), where I work, we have a host of trusted, unbiased resources available online. Two examples: our Teaching Children about Money page and our financial literacy database, which is a one-stop hub for programs and activities, many geared towards children and youth.

Another FCAC priority is increasing financial literacy programs for adults in the workplace, in part to encourage adults to share information with their children and to feel more confident in their knowledge about money matters.

We know giving adults a chance to improve their financial literacy will spark better conversations about money at home. To support this goal, we’ve collaborated with the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, who developed a financial literacy workshop now being delivered in workplaces across Canada. You can find a link to it on our Canada.ca web page for workplace financial literacy.

Another PISA finding suggests all these efforts are paying off: a majority of students demonstrated the capacity to delay gratification - a skill that’s associated with financial well-being.

Sixty-three per cent of Canadian students said that if they didn’t have enough money to buy something they really wanted, they would save up to buy it. Another 17 per cent said they simply wouldn’t buy it at all.

This is a healthy indication that messages about saving for big purchases are reaching students early in life. This is good news, as studies show that saving and spending habits tend to be formed at a young age, and are related to good financial behaviour in adulthood.

The PISA study also found that youth with experience handling their own money demonstrated stronger financial literacy skills. Canadian students who held occasional jobs like babysitting or yard work had, on average, the highest financial literacy scores. We also know most Canadian teenagers hold bank accounts, and so they have some experience with financial products and services, which seems to help. We learn by doing.

We know there’s more work to be done to improve financial literacy levels. FCAC recognizes the need to evolve our understanding through research, in order to further improve outcomes in the financial literacy field. That’s why we’ve

recently developed Canada’s National Research Plan for Financial Literacy 2016-2018 to act as a clear road map for the broad network of researchers in this area.

Perhaps the most valuable result of the PISA study is that it gives researchers a baseline for further evaluating the efforts to teach financial literacy to Canadian youth.

We’re off to a great start. Young people are the future of our economy and today’s teenagers are tomorrow’s financial consumers. With that in mind, the PISA results represent a big win for all Canadians and our economy.

ball golf, with a bit of competition thrown in for good measure. The Sunday, July 23 afternoon began around 1 p.m. and went on for a few hours as pairs of golfers took to the fairway to whack some balls around.

With there being various events hav-

ing been planned for the weekend, Elmer Haluschak, President of the Golf Club, felt that they didn’t get the numbers that they had hoped for, only having around twenty or so golfers compared to the twenty-five or thirty that they’ve had in past years. “This annual game is more of a social gathering that is really family-orientated. That’s the niche that we’re after here,” Elmer, confirmed. “We’re offering a dinner afterwards to socialize a little bit more.

We have some past members who have come out as well as some new members who’ve come from Lloydminster, which is good for us and shows loyalty to the club.”

The Myrnam and Derwent Golf and Country Club tries to get one tournament in a month and Elmer finds that people from other clubs attend these tournaments as well because they like the less competitive atmosphere and feel more at ease on their fairways.

Anne Ruzicka Communications Coordinator for Beaver Municipal Solutions Beaver Municipal Solutions was proud to sponsor the official unveiling of their Upcycle Challenge’s winner through the launch of a new cottage industry, “Got It Covered”. This new enterprise was the innovative invention of Morley Knudslien, who uses old bill boards to create covers for things such as RV tires.

The properties that protect bill boards from fading can also be used to protect tires, generators and a host of other items from the same UV damage.

The Upcycle Challenge was an initiative of Beaver Municipal Solutions’ Public Advisory Committee (PAC). After a request to the committee to hold a recycling contest, it was decided to change the focus into a business development challenge, which could potentially provide economic benefit to the community. In October 2016, during Waste Reduction Week in Canada, Beaver Municipal Solutions launched the Upcycle Challenge. Residents, businesses, institutions and community groups were invited to create a new

saleable product from materials in the waste stream.

Interested parties needed to register in order to be eligible. Once registered, they had until Earth Day 2017 to produce a prototype along with documentation of their process.

To celebrate Earth Day, registrants brought their entries to the Ryley Legion, displaying them for both the judges and interested public attendees. A judging panel comprised of Public Advisory Committee Chairman, Dwayne Metro, ATB Manager, Scott Langille, and Small Business Owner, Karen Stokowski, viewed fifteen prototypes. In addition to the tire covers, some of the entries included a corner shelf, pens, wine rack, coasters, ottoman, ladder, and an electric guitar all made from waste materials.

Morley Knudslien was named the Upcycle Challenge Business Development winner for his bill board tire covers. As Challenge winner, he received $2500. In addition, Beaver Municipal Solutions presented Morley with a cheque for $5000 to be used toward the

development of his new cottage industry. Beaver Municipal Solutions was proud to place the first order for a set of tire covers.

First runner up for his pallet and construction castoff electric guitar was also Morley Knudslien and second runner up was NU2U2’s ottoman made from recycled materials. First and second runner up received $1500 and $1000 respectively.

To celebrate Environment Week, Beaver Municipal Solutions hosted a launch event for “Got It Covered”.

Morley, along with his wife Lorraine, were presented with a cheque for $5000 for business development support for his new cottage industry. MLA Jessica Littlewood brought well-wishes from the province.

MLA Wes Taylor along with local politicians and Public Advisory Committee members also expressed gratitude to Beaver Municipal Solutions for the implementation of the Upcycle Challenge. They also congratulated Morley Knudslien on the creation of his new initiative.

Rural elder abuse coalition Sgt Jerry Nutbrown RCMP Ponderings, Vegreville Detactment Vegreville and area have many partnerships, groups, coalitions, societies, etc. One that has been around for a couple of years, so it is relatively new, is the Rural Elder Abuse Prevention Coalition.

The coalition is all about support, referral and information dissemination for educating the area residents. As the name implies, it targets elderly victims in a wide range of topics that all associate with different types of abuse of the elderly. I am a part of this coalition and have learned many things since being involved. On the policing side of this issue, it is usually cut-and-dried on whether we can act on any given situation. We determine if a criminal offense has taken place and we go from there. Unfortunately, there is a

range of abuses that elders can suffer that are not criminal but more morally or ethically wrong, and we can’t charge someone for those. People mistreating seniors can be anyone from family to caregivers to ‘friends’. These situations can be very involved as court orders and doctor assessments can trigger various legal processes that can get quite complicated.

Abuse can take many forms beyond the more easily identifiable physical abuses. Refusing medications or over medicating the senior, financial abuses can range from minor to major theft and misappropriation of funds, isolating the senior and limiting their exposure to others for socializing, misusing of their assets and the list goes on. Some of these will cross into the criminal side of actions but many are not and can be such as talking down or yelling at the senior which is just disrespectful but this can escalate.

to you that you know isn’t right. Who do you turn to?

Who can help with assisting the senior with finding professional help to address their situation? This can be a daunting task and can be complicated by medical conditions, financial situations, insolation and other possible influences. Seniors can be particularly vulnerable because of many things and often it is trust.

A coordinator was hired with a provincial government grant and she is responsible for working on setting the foundation of this for our area. FCSS offices and their staff are partners in this coalition and are doing a lot of work towards it. FCSS staffs are a great place to find out information and look for further referrals to help in working through any abuse situations that may exist. These folks know their stuff!

Our seniors have built this country to what we enjoy today and they deserve our gratitude, care and above all, our deepest respects. We need to ensure that the ‘golden years’ are just that as this group of people are so very valuable to our society. The coalition’s main goal is to do just that, help seniors to enjoy the fruits of their labour and pass the torch to the next generation.

Before the parade began the judging needed to take place which prized the best-decorated floats that entered in the competition. The Flag Ladies were Morgen, Corina, and Jamie Frazer. Winners for Commercial were Hiway 16 News taking first place and Northpark Collision taking second. The

Face Painting for the kids started at noon and then came the kids pedal tractor events, both attracted happy children and fun-filled competition with the tractors.

The kid’s pony rides were especially popular for the children as well as for the adults who watched their smiling faces.

Throughout the afternoon, Jack Axe had their Mobile Ax Throwing Competition which was more fun than dangerous.

The winner of the competition was Dustin Axley in first and Addam Saruk taking second. Dinner was served at 5:30 by

the Ag Society. With the guests choosing either chicken or steak, as they enjoyed their meal with all the trimmings and delicious cake as the dessert.

The evening and late into the night was all about the beans as people came in pairs to see who was the Boss of the Toss!

By nearly midnight the winners were crowned with the Bob Myroniuk and Mike Hladunewich team splitting first prize with the Jackie and Dennis Machney team.

The Myrnam One Day Fun Day ended with fireworks before midnight and people oohing and aahing with each blast and explosion in the night sky.

in Smithers, BC, surrounded by family and friends. The event was held at the lovely Banner Mountain Lodge, just outside Smithers. Friends from the Kispiox Valley, the Hazeltons, Smithers and Houston joined Olga and her family for her birthday tea. Olga’s oldest daughter Carol Wookey hosted the tea, and entertainment was provided by Olga’s family. The birthday tea opened with a roof-raising “Oh Canada” in recognition of Canada’s 150th birthday, and ended with Mnohaya Lita, a traditional Ukrainian song of celebration.

In conjunction with her birthday, Olga’s daughters Mary Lou and Betty Ann Walker, also of Smithers, BC, hosted a 4 day Goshko family reunion, and the following family travelled to Smithers for the event: Julie, Ron, Rawlie, Tymko and Mario Lemoine came from Worsley, AB, Carol Wookey travelled from Cleardale, AB, Bill and Joel Boychuck came from Frayssinet, France, and from Toronto there were Dawn and Ron Clark, Michael, Effie and Lena Goshko, and Victor, Jayne and Evan Young. Myrna Young, as well as Patricia,

Brian and Tatiana Tucker joined us from Vancouver, BC and Michael, Lisa and Rylan Goshko joined us from Sherwood Park, AB. Shirley and Jane Perrett, as well as Jane’s son David came from Kamloops, BC. It was a great celebration of a life that continues to be well-lived!

Lamont Summer Sizzler was hot stuff!

Joe Machney Reporter The 30th Annual Lamont Summer Sizzler was held on July 20th and 21st at the Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Grounds and brought around 1170 people in to check it out. Friday night saw around 370 spectators and for Saturday it was over 800.

The main event for Friday was the rodeo performance as was an exciting beginning to what would become a great weekend. Alongside the rodeo was the kid’s fun area with bouncy boyz.

Saturday began with a pancake breakfast, then the fun continued with rodeo slack morning performance and the kid’s rodeo. The afternoon rodeo performance was also well attended and enjoyed, as was the mutton busting and kid’s chuck wagon races. The Saturday afternoon market place offered the patrons a variety of

items to remind them of the weekend experience.

The steak supper at 5 p.m. gave the fans a chance to refuel and get ready for the combine crunch event, which was a smashing good time, literally. The winner of the combine crunch was rookie Trent Kucy, who also holds the world record for the longest barrel race of over 2 minutes. Ending around twilight, the late evening and night time made way for the Adult Dance in the Dirt with music by

A celebration of Life for Lois Horton Rosanne Fortier Lois Horton made a positive impact on every life she touched. Lois’s friend, Lil Giebelhaus said Lois used her wonderful mind well and was kind to everyone; it didn’t matter who the person was.

There was standing room only at the Celebration of Life for Lois Jean (Collins) Horton at Vegreville Sunshine Club Centre on July 22.

All of Lois children, Margaret Ostren, A.L. Horton, Jane Horton, Hobe Horton, and Kate Horton did a presentation of Lois’s life. Lois was born on January 7, 1925, and she lived until March 15, 2017.

She was the youngest of four children.

Her early school years were during the Great Depression.

Lois went on to be a school teacher where her first posting was in September 1944. Later, she returned to University which Lois said were the best years of her life.

Lois taught at the Vegreville High School and in 1954, she earned a Bachelor of Education degree.

Lois’s Grade 11 class at VHS said Lois really inspired them to learn English and other subjects. They always had a lot of fun in her classes, yet, Lois was able to control the class well.

One of Lois’s former students said that she was an incredible inspiration to the girls of that time because they used to have all kinds of conversations with Lois about stuff they could not talk about with their mothers or anyone else. Lois gave them a nice sense of being and courage.

Lois married Wilfrid (Lauier) Horton (owner of The Observer) on August 11, 1956, in Jasper. She was four years his senior but that never bothered her. They were blessed with five children. The family was very important to Lois.

Many citizens remembered that caring about health was the core of Lois’s values. Lois never had a driver’s license; instead, she was an avid cyclist who was

frequently seen riding around on her bike in Vegreville. Lois’s greatest passion was her dogs.

Lois’s children and friends all claimed that Lois loved housework and she kept an incredibly tidy house. Many people admired her for that.

Lois’s daughter, Kate mentioned that her mother and she always enjoyed a bit of wit together.

To add a touch of home, Lois’s children then passed around an envelope with a recipe for a ginger snap cookie that Lois was famous for making.

One of Lois’s former neighbors, Mrs. Cowan said Lois’s industrious life really impressed her and Lois knew what it meant to be neighborly and she taught her children the same principles.

Lois along with Terry Kubin and others helped a Vietnamese refugee family start a new life in Canada. This family also attended the celebration.

Afterward, Lil Giebelhaus requested that Lois’s daughter, Kate sing, ‘Consider the Lilies.’ This was a dedication for all the years Lois devoted to the Wendy Brook Festival.

Everyone was then treated to light refreshments, coffee, water, and desserts.

Football Mannville Riverview held Men and Ladies Association Par 3 nights holds fundraiser Kent Staden Mannville Riverview Manager The Mannville Riverview Golf Course and Campground held 2 very successful events this week playing host to a Ladies Par 3 Night with 50 golfers taking part. The $100 per hole prize was split between Long Putt and Closest To the Pin. The Grounds Crew added a 10th hole which was considered a bonus hole for the entry fee. The fewest putts prize was shared

by Lois Larsen from Irma and Mannville’s Kenzie Smith with 18 and Kenzie took the lowest score of 35. The most greens in regulation was none other than campground resident Brenda Walker with 6 out of 10. Hole distances varied from 97 yds to 150 yds.

The second successful event was the Men’s Par 3 Night with 93 golfers playing for $100/hole for closest to the pin. The low score was Reid Roland with a 34, Duane Reidel with 5 out of 10 greens in regulation. The fewest Putts was split between Mannville’s Chanse Hinton and Irma’s Keenan Scott. The Golf Course Manager was very impressed with the out of town support from Irma and Vermilion. After the event all enjoyed a great steak cooked by volunteer Gary Myshak.

Kudos to the Clubhouse staff for keeping everything running seamlessly. Staden said the best indicator of success was that golfers requested another set of Par 3 Nights with sponsor donations being received on both nights for the next one.

Joe Machney Reporter Friday, July 21 was a perfect day for a garage sale fundraiser and that’s exactly what the Vegreville Football Association held. The beautiful morning welcomed the crowds of people to 5121 45B Ave to peruse the many eclectic items on display. From paintings to books, to kitchen utensils, the variety of items endless. All funds raised were used to support youth football in the Vegreville community.

“I use to have a grandson who played football and I started doing these garage sale fundraisers when he started playing,” June Kuly said. “So now I’m carrying that on. Parents bring stuff and I sell them and raise funds for the football association. I always have a good turnout.”

Dr. Gelmini visits Sizzlin’ Summer

Rosanne Fortier Obtaining an interest in science creates unlimited career paths for children to later choose from while it also teaches them so much about the world around them.

Getting children intrigued with science was easier than giving them ice-cream on a warm day at Scientist, Dr. Gelmini’s experiment presentation at the Sizzlin Summer program at Vegreville Centennial Library on July 21. This was a part of the week’s theme-STEAM (Science, Technology, Experiment, Art, Math, and Music).

The afternoon was full of experiments about chemical properties and interactions, evidence and investigation.

Dr. Gelmini began with saying that science likes to predict the future. He put a chemical into a cup and then he added water to the cup, poured it out and nothing came out.

Dr. Gelmini continued with using a toilet paper roll and various instruments to make the paper move upward. At one point, the paper flew all over the children. “Very fast moving air creates low pressure and then the high pressure moves into the low pressure and it lifts it,” Gelmini said.

He showed the children a container of coffee mate and said how many calories it had in it. Calories create energy and when sprinkled with heat a certain way, it created a small fire.

Dr.Gelmini mentioned that changing conditions lead to a better reaction. He described the property of liquid and gases and how a little bit of liquid makes a lot of gas, almost a thousand times more.

The children learned these concepts and so much more in the two-hour presentation.

Dr. Gelmini is a Professor of MacEwan University and he works for Alberta Science Network.

In the morning, Dr. Gelmini also did science experiment presentations at St. Martin’s School for the Summer Staycation program and Vegreville Community Day Care.

Hotdog fundraiser held at Co-op Joe Machney Reporter Dwayne Hlady, along with his helpers Faith Browning and Hanna Macpherson spent a good part of the morning and afternoon on July 21 selling pop and hot dogs at the Vegreville Co-op to raise money for the Alberta Council on Aging.

“We do a lot of intergenerational work at that Sunshine Club here in Vegreville, like we get the MODEL project to help

out,” Dwayne Hlady, Alberta Council on Aging Director for Region 9, said.

“The kids come after school and what do all kids want after school? School snacks! We get about twenty kids a week coming through the project and Hanna and Faith have gone through the project before and what they’re doing is volunteering here.”

“I always volunteer when I have the chance to,” Hanna Macpherson said, proudly.

Rosanne Fortier Terry Kubin is a familiar face around Vegreville as she is very involved in the community. Recently, Terry was honored with The Honorable Doug Black, Q.C. Senator Contribution Award for her outstanding dedication to the Town of Vegreville and community through volunteerism and civic engagement.

Canada is doing this as part of Canada’s 150th birthday. They wanted to recognize 219 outstanding Albertans; two individuals were nominated in each of Alberta’s cities, towns, and villages. Li Giebelhaus was the other recipient of this award.

Terry said she was honored and overwhelmed to receive this award. “I was surprised to find this award in my mail because I didn’t know who promoted it or where it came from. However, it was amazing to receive it.”

“I’m very much in love with Vegreville.

I have been volunteering for the Wendy Brook Festival for around 25 to 30 years and I won’t give that up until the day I die. I am on the Akasu Palliative Care Board and I volunteer for Vegreville United Church. Also, I am on the Syria Refugee Committee and I was on the

Vietnamese Refugee Committee,” Terry mentioned.

Terry said she is a believer in the teaching of Christ and He taught us to love one another, help one another and be kind and caring to one another. Terry has always been a volunteer because her mother was big on helping others and making a difference and she was on the school board where they made changes for the betterment of everyone at school.

Terry would also like to thank whoever nominated her and she wished to acknowledge her husband John who is a wonderful person. “John has always been very supported of my involvement with the community.”

Terry said she feels more people are volunteering now than in the past. It is more accepting and productive. “When you see change, you know it’s worthwhile. More people are seeing the advantages it can do for their community and for their own families,” Terry said.

Terry feels that Canadians are born with a sense of wanting to help others.

Canadians are really nice people!

“Everywhere I go, I am so grateful to be Canadian,” Terry added.

Third Five Stop Park Hop Rosanne Fortier There is a treasure hidden at 49 Street and 42 Avenue called Cul De Sac Park.

On July 21, so much fun and imaginary play were created from a bunch of boxes at the third annual Five Stop Park Hop. The Vegreville and District Child Development Coalition’s (VDCDC) sign for this park is emotional maturity. “The boxes are meant to encourage free play. A big part of emotional maturity is helping children become more settled in their emotions so they can play with each other. Free play gives them a chance to start with solitary play and then start working together as a team, VDCDC Coordinator, Anya Langkow said.

This goal was achieved because the children eagerly built an airplane together and then they were told to put on a seatbelt because they were going to fly the plane to Africa and then they crashed in Mexico and later, they would find their way to Paris.

Program Supervisor for Parent Link Centre, Jennifer Maiko added that there was a feeling poster and they had a game of Simon Says where children played out whatever face they were feeling or they did whatever Simon said to do. There were emotion stamps that had different emotions on them and they could choose to put them on their boxes or use them to make a mural.

This guided park play had free snacks of water, fruit and muffins and a free draw for prizes of a three-month family pool pass and a one day pass for the fair.

All of the Five Stop Park Hops are hosted by VDCDC in partnership with Parent Link Centre and M.O.D.E.L Project with many other community partners involved.

Doctor Edgcumbe takes on new position Joe Machney Reporter Dr. Daniel P Edgcumbe has recently been appointed to the position of Deputy Zone Medical Director for Central Zone with Alberta Health Services.

“The time commitments of this role mean I will no longer be able to maintain a panel of patients in Vegreville,” Dr. Edgcumbe said. “However, with two new physicians in Vegreville, the second of which will arrive in August or September, I am confident that patients will continue to have access to excellent patient care locally, and that they will be in extremely good hands.”

Rural health and all that surrounds it is a big part of the good doctor’s life and with his strong insight into rural health concerns his new senior position will allow Dr. Edgcumbe to continue to advance the interests of rural health care but on a higher level, while still residing in Vegreville.

Patients will be contacted by clinic staff to make arrangements to transition their care to one of the new physicians. All records will be retained by the clinic and readily accessible by the new physicians.

“I will continue to serve as the Facility Medical Director for St. Joseph’s General Hospital,” Dr. Edgcumbe reassured. “I will also continue to see patients in the Vegreville family Clinic and at the hospital on an occasional basis.”

Joe Machney Reporter On July 19, MP for Vancouver East and NDP Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Jenny Kwan visited Vegreville to sit down at the Social Centre with local union members from the Case Processing Centre (CPC) to show her support for the town in their unabated fight to save the CPC from being moved to Edmonton. Along with local MLA Jessica Littlewood, Shannon Stubbs Conservative MP for Lakeland, Linda Duncan NDP MP for Edmonton Strathcona, Marianne Hladun, PSAC Regional Executive Vice-President for the Prairies, Vegreville Mayor Myron Hayduk, and the Councilors of Vegreville, a second meeting was held to explore options and to discuss the situation and what could be done further to reverse the unilateral and undemocratic decision by the Liberal government.

Kwan’s open letter to Minister Ahmed Hussen voiced her concerns about the move and how it will negatively impact the community. “I cannot emphasize enough the importance of your intervention to halt the plans to close CPC Vegreville,” Kwan urged. “As workers and their families have repeatedly explained to you, relocating is unrealistic for most CPC Vegreville staff. The closure will thus devastate the town, impacting every aspect of community life. It will also cost the government a considerable amount in terms of (re)training employees and slow processing times during this (re) training period.”

Kwan feels that Vegreville is a case study of how a community is fighting back against its government and its decision. “I care deeply about this country and Vegreville is part of our

country and is in distress,” Kwan said.

“We have an amazing situation here.

We have the local township, the local council, the provincial government, the Minister and the local MLA, the Union, the workers, the Conservative MP, and the NDP MP all standing together in unison saying to the Justin Trudeau Government Do Not Do This and value all of Canada and every single community. So we as a government need to support the community of Vegreville in their effort.”

“This is kind of like getting a third wind,” Mayor Myron Hayduk said of the meeting. “As things go on you get disappointed and feel that things aren’t working or going ahead and I think for the town and the council this meeting has given us a great boost by showing the support that we’ve gotten from Federal and Provincial members of Parliament. I’ve never given up the thought of this decision not being reversed because there is no rational reason for it, but you just get discouraged after a while because you begin to ask yourself who am I talking to, who’s listening?”

“It was good to talk about what the provincial government can do in terms of bringing employment resources to the town as well as working with local post-secondary institutions,” MLA Jessica Littlewood said.

Hayduk feels that if it happens here it can happen anywhere in rural Canada.

“Vegreville is a strong community and this will not kill us,” The Mayor said with conviction. “After looking at it I feel that it is the government’s intention to remove government offices from rural Canada. So this fight is not only for Vegreville, this is for every rural community within Canada.”
