Old Vegreville Celebrates 125 Years

Over 100 people looked back to the very beginning of Vegreville at the 125th-anniversary celebration for the settlement of Old Vegreville held at Old Vegreville School on Saturday, July 20. The day began with a blessing of the graves at the cemetery, then continued on with a social gathering, opportunity to learn more about the history of Old Vegreville, and a potluck luncheon with presentations.

Al Robert, a long-time member of the Old Vegreville Social Society, shared the story of the location’s long history.

In 1894, the original settlers of Old Vegreville consisted of French-speaking people who moved back from a failed, drought-stricken settlement in Kansas. After returning to Quebec to regroup, then made their way west to the “garden of Vegreville.”

RCMP files from July 15 - 21 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser July 15 02:57 – Report of an unwanted male in a residence. The caller invited a homeless man into his house 6 days prior and the man has since refused to leave and become unruly. Members attended and it was determined that the guest had left 1.5 hours prior.

04:53 – Traffic stop conducted on highway 16. In speaking with the driver, she stated that she was lost. Members observed that the driver of the vehicle may have been intoxicated. The 22-yearold female driver failed roadside tests and was arrested for DUI. Breath samples obtained resulted in readings of .200 and .220.

09:30 – Report of SCAM email. The subject had received an email about his son’s Netflix account and payment. He proceeded to supply credit card information, drivers license and social insurance number. The subject was advised to complete an online scam report and notify Equifax and Trans Union.

11:39 – Multiple complaints about a “Yellow Crop Duster Style Airplane”, flying low over the highway. A referral was made to the appropriate government agency. *** Members DID NOT attempt to intercept.

14:24 – Complainant called to report that her new neighbours stole the boulders that were in place to hold up the fence. Members attended and it was determined that the neighbour did not steal the boulders, but moved them to cut the grass. The dispute was mediated.

16:01 – Report of a break and enter to a commercial property. It was determined that 2 red tool chests and a Television were stolen.

17:50 – Report of a break and enter to a residence in progress. The homeowner called his nephew who then called the RCMP. Members attended and did find signs of attempted forced entry to the home. Under investigation.

July 16 07:44 – 911 call received about a speeding vehicle on Hwy 16. Members were unable to intercept the vehicle but were able to contact the registered owner.

The owner indicated that it was his son driving who was rushing home from work because he was sick. The reporting party did not want to attend court or provide a written statement regarding the speeding. Without evidence, members are unable to lay charges. A verbal warning was provided.

08:07 – Report of mischief to a house under construction in Vegreville. A rock

was thrown through the basement window. Under investigation.

08:30 – Report of theft from a vehicle overnight. A wallet with ID, debit card, health care card, and other items were stolen. The debit card was later used at a store. Under investigation.

09:15 – Report of a break and enter to a commercial property. Multiple doors were broken into, but it was not determined if anything was taken. Under investigation.

15:48 – Traffic stop conducted when a member witnessed a driver using their cell phone. A voluntary penalty of $287 was issued.

17:00 – Traffic stop conducted on a vehicle with expired registration. A voluntary penalty of $310 was issued.

17:19 – Report of kids throwing rocks and breaking a window at a residence.

Members attended with a parent who saw the broken window and agreed with the homeowner to have it fixed.

18:08 – Report of a vehicle that was “broken into” and items were taken. A visa and mail were taken. Members attended and spoke with the complainant providing advice. It was also determined that there was no damage to the vehicle and that the doors had been left unlocked.

18:13 – Report of young people on the rail tracks near the Vegreville campground causing the engine operator to apply the emergency breaks. It was determined that the youth were there with a camping group from out of town.

The information was passed on to CN police for follow-up.

July 17

06:26 – Report of attempted theft of a license plate in Vegreville. The complainant reported that a Caucasian male was attempting to remove a place from a green Toyota Camry.

It was deter-

mined that the theft had been successful, the plate entered into the RCMP database and it was later recovered in Edmonton.

08:34 – Multiple reports of vehicles having their fuel tanks drilled and fuel stolen. Under investigation.

11:15 – Traffic enforcement conducted by the Integrated Traffic Unit with multiple tickets written. One was the driver was issued a voluntary penalty of $393 for traveling 153 kmph on Hwy 16 and another $403 for travelling 154 kmph.

18:32 – Report of break and enter to a rural commercial property. Locks were cut and a generator was stolen. Under investigation.

July 18

05:11 – Traffic stop conducted for a broken tail light. A Mandatory Alcohol Screening was done roadside and the driver blew a fail. The driver was arrested and the vehicle towed. At the detachment, the driver provided breath samples of 0.100 and 0.100.

08:53 – Call to the detachment requesting help to get her cat fixed because she could not afford it. She wanted to discuss “cat rearing and care” but was informed that these ARE NOT police matters.

09:03 – Correspondence received requesting assistance to retrieve civil legal documents from an Ex-spouse.

The complainant indicated that his spouse states she does not have the documents and it is his responsibility to provide them to the courts. The subject of the complaint is demanding to know where his documents are and wants the police to provide a report to the judge.

The complainant has been informed that the police to not get involved in civil property or divorce proceedings.

13:48 – Report of a break and enter to a rural commercial property. Locks were cut, sea-can entered and fuel tanks drilled. Under investigation.

11:47 – Complaint of an unwanted female at a residence. In 2019 this client has been dealt with 26 times by the Vegreville detachment. The subject of the complaint has recently been arrested and released by the courts on four separate occasions and is subject to four separate court orders however continues to disregard the court-imposed conditions.

During the week there were 3 false alarms, 2 false 911s and 5 animal collisions totaling 84 calls for service.

Fisheries Discussed in Meetings with AEP Minister and MLA Caucus Committee Ray Makowecki Volunteer Fisheries Biologist - Next Step Team and the Volunteer Biologists Group

On July 18, 2019, representatives of two groups of concerned citizens met with AEP Minister Jason Nixon to discuss Fish Management in Alberta. The two groups, the Next Step Team, and the Volunteer Biologists Group represent a number of organizations, municipalities, businesses and non-government biologists wishing to improve fisheries management in the province.

The groups have been advocating for significant changes in the way Alberta’s fish resources are managed for the last three years. Ray Makowecki, a fisheries biologist and spokesperson for the two groups, said they tried to have meetings with the previous minister with no success.

The representatives were very pleased with the discussion and the Minister’s perspective on the future management of Alberta’s fish resources. The Minister stated he was also concerned with many

of the problems the groups identified and appreciated hearing the solutions the groups offered. The Minister appeared to strongly support harvesting fish resources, information transparency, effective public consultation and citizens science. His open communication with the groups is a large step forward in developing confidence with the people. Lac La Biche Mayor Omer Moghrabi, a Next Step Team representative, provided the perspective of how fisheries management affects the local economy. There is work to be done and all interested people are encouraged to share concerns and provide input.

In addition, an MLA Caucus Committee is now reviewing fish management in Alberta. The committee invited the Next Step Team, the Volunteer Biologists Group, and the Alberta Fish and Game Association to present issues and concerns and to offer and discuss solutions.

The committee includes Chairman Todd Loewen (Central Peace-Notley), Dave Hanson (BonnyvilleCold Lake-St. Paul,), Nate Hor ner (DrumhellerStettler), Pete Guthrie (AirdrieCochrane), Martin

Long (West Yellowhead), and Miranda Rosin (Banff-Kananaskis).

A summary of some of the problems and possible solutions discussed included the following:

As we approach federal election season, parties must choose their battlegrounds and plan for what they think will benefit them the most when it comes to votes.

Clearly, items such as lowering taxes, improving life for veterans and seniors or justice (you DO read the blotter don’t you?) are just not what they used to be.

These topics are old and rather boring when compared to... Canada’s Food Guide.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer for some reason has hooked his wagon to the recently re-vamped Canada’s Food Guide which was published in January by Health Canada.

Despite the Liberals failing in epic fashion on the issue of transparency, there is no doubt about the transparency with Scheer speaking to dairy farmers at the annual meeting of the Dairy Farmers of Canada. There, Scheer promised the crowd that the Conservatives would review the newest version of the guide and its adjustments (read reductions) on recommended consumption of dairy and meat. Is it possible this promise

had something to do with the defeat over Maxime Bernier for the Conservative leadership?

According to the Health Canada web site, there was no shortage in the consultations. In the fall of 2016, almost 20,000 Canadians submitted their expectations of the new food guide. Following that, there was a second consultation in 2017 a second consultation involved stakeholders and interested people to provide feedback on their recommendations. This involved approximately 6700 respondents.

Contributions came from educators, health professionals, the general public and representatives of organizations. This does not appear to be a knee-jerk change and seems to be well planned and designed to NOT bend to industry pressures.

I personally am a big fan of red meat and while I love some melted cheese with a burger I do not consume much dairy. It simply doesn’t agree with me. In fact, despite the push for plant-based meat replacements, the science is clear that their highly processed nature deems them questionable when it comes to nutrition. Like other highly processed foods of convenience, moderation is the recommended course.

The short version of the issue? The new food guide encourages Canadians to drink more water, cook more, and eat more plant-based foods (eat your veggies) and fiber. What monsters!! Eat more veggies? Who would suggest such a thing? No wonder Scheer is attacking the new guide.

Most Canadians have the following on the top of their list for key issues they are concerned with. Carbon Tax, Pharmacare & Immigration. Notice that none of those are the amount of water vs milk recommended by our Food Guide.

If Scheer was really concerned with our health rather than the health of his support in certain industries, perhaps he would look closely at the facts. If he did, he might realize that this is an accurate guide to healthier eating. Nowhere does it say to stop eating dairy or red meat.

If Scheer were the only politician doing this, it might be news. Unfortunately, we are entering the silly season, so we can expect to have outrage on various topics, free money for the masses and more than enough promises to go around.

Tournament with a Difference

Dan Beaudette Vegreville News Advertiser Boston Pizza in Vegreville was the scene of a tournament of Mario Kart played with the Nintendo Switch and is only held by Northern Alberta Boston Pizzas. Some 80 people gathered at Boston Pizza Sunday morning to partake in the tournament. It was for family and the turnout was great.

Scott Dixon, Boston Pizza franchise owner, said, “This is a free event for the family, and the competition is kept local.”

The tournament is free to enter and the food was on the house. “I took the opportunity to host this event in Vegreville because I felt it would be good for the family to take part as a unit and participate,” said Mr. Dixon.

This tournament is run similar to the NHL playoffs with the winners moving

on. The overall winner will receive Free Pizza for a year while the event winners (4) will receive a Trophy and $50.00 gift certificate.

When asked if he would consider hosting this event again Mr. Dixon said, “If the opportunity arises again I will most certainly entertain the idea.”

90 Years Ago – July 24, 1929

The new Wattsford school house now being put up a mile south of Kaleland, is being erected very rapidly.

The town of Wainwright fell victim to the flames early on Sunday morning, when a fore originating in an ash-heap or small pile of debris which was being burned the night before, was fanned into activity by the high wind of Sunday and swept through the town cleaning up block after block of the business section. No one was injured, but some very narrow escapes are reported.

Elwood Brinton has secured the restaurant concession at the Fair next week and will do the catering for the crowds. He promises that everything will be of the very best and home-cooking will be a feature of the menu. Everything at popular prices, too.

John Hewins, veterinary surgeon, formerly of Didsbury, Alberta, has located in Vegreville and has opened up an office in the Prince Edward Hotel. He is a graduate of the Toronto Veterinary College and is registered in this province.

75 Years Ago – July 26, 1944

Yusep and Lutzak reported that Dr. Lazaruk of Willingdon was ready to buy the former municipal office in that town for $600.00.

Offer was accepted.

Given favourable weather for the next few weeks and it is likely that wheat harvest will come on some few days earlier than usual.

So far, there has never been a more favorable year than this, for growth and development of all crops in this district. Wheat is especially good with big heads filing out.

The 21 year old 800 ton U.S. submarine S-8 was accidentally lost in the Pacific recently while engaged in training exercises with a complement estimated at about 60 men. “The depth of water makes it impossible to salvage the submarine and hope has been abandoned for the recovery of the missing personnel,” the navy said.

Nearly 200,000 German soldiers have surrendered to the Allied armies since the beginning of the summer offensives, the BBC said in a broadcast. The total includes more than 35,000 in Italy. More that 54,000 in Normandy, and more than 110,000 in Russia.

50 Years Ago – July 24, 1969

Some 150 farmer with tractors took to the Highway between Vegreville and Innisfree on July 17 and 18. Farmers came from Vegreville, Lavoy, Ranfurly, Innisfree, Two Hills, Willingdon, Holden, Brosseau, Minburn, Mannville and Viking representing many farm U.F.A. locals. The farmers took to the highway to : 1. Back up their fifteen point brief that the Farmers Union of Alberta presented to the Prime Mnister on his recent tour of the West. 2. Protest against Prime Minister Trudeau coming west and failing to meet with the farmers. 3. Support the Saskatchewan Farmers’ Union in their protest of low wheat prices and the lack of market for wheat crops.

Apollo XI made a successful landing on the moon on Sunday afternoon, July 20th and following a series of investigations blasted off on Monday to rejoin the command ship which was in orbit around the moon some 69 miles distant. The three astronauts who participated in the feat, hailed as the greatest exploratory achievement of mankind, were Neil A. Armstrong, Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. and Michael Collins. Astronauts stepping on to the moon’s surface were Armstrong and Aldrin. Michael Collins remained aboard the command ship “Columbia.”

Twenty year old Rose Morely was crowned Jaycee Sky Queen at the annual Fly in Breakfast and Airshow Sunday afternoon. Miss Morely represented the Capri Beauty Salon and became the 5th Sky Queen when crowned by Jaycee President G. Whelan. Runners up were Shirley Kostiuk followed by Lynn Machin and Dianne Solway.

25 Years Ago -27, 1994

A local jockey has reached a rider’s milestone. Richard Ziegler posted his 1000’s win recently at Stampede Park in Calgary. Ziegler has ridden approximately 8,500 mounts during his 16 years as a jockey. He is the son of Berton Ziegler of Vegreville and first began riding horses when he was five years old.

Tech-driven Employment Apocalypse Just a Myth In fact, as demographics shift, Canada faces chronic labour shortages Livio Di Matteo Senior Fellow – The Fraser Institute Media reports often paint a dire picture of technological change and automation, spawning a future world of massive job loss and less employment. And yet, a labour shortage – not a glut due to mass unemployment – looms in Canada thanks to retiring baby boomers and our ageing population.

And history suggests that when technological change alters the employment mix, the economy grows, creating new jobs and more opportunity.

For example, a study of census results for the United Kingdom since 1871 by Ian Stewart, Debapratim De, and Alex Cole note that, despite fears of job destruction, technological change spurs job creation.

Over the long run, the U.K. experienced increases in employment and the labour force.

While there were declines in occupations such as agricultural labourers, washers, launderers, telephonists and telegraph operators, other occupations (accountants, bar staff, hairdressers, service workers, etc.) experienced employment growth.

The situation is the same in Canada. Between 1851 and 2017 – an era marked by rapid technological change – our population grew from 2.4 million to 35.2 million, a 15-fold increase, while the Canadian labour force grew from an estimated 762,000 people to 19.7 million people,

a 26-fold increase.

And according to employment data, from 1891 to 2017, the number of employed people in Canada grew from 1.6 million to 18.4 million, a 12-fold increase, while the labour force (which includes employed people, unemployed people seeking work, and employers) grew from 1.7 million people to 19.7 million people, also a 12-fold increase.

While employment and the labour force grew alongside technological progress and development, the composition of employment also changed.

For example, in 1921 agriculture still accounted for nearly one-third of all employment in Canada (down from 50 per cent in 1871) compared to two per cent by the early 21st century.

Overall, the last 150 years in Canada has seen a shift from goods production (manufacturing, for example) to services (health, for example) as the dominant source of employment. Even as demand for many traditional jobs has declined, entirely new occupations have arisen that didn’t exist mere decades ago – think of today’s social media strategists, solar panel installers and genetic counsellors.

Forecasts suggest that in coming years, employment and the labour force in Canada will continue growing, but at a diminished rate with employment growing slightly faster than the labour force.

The result?

Low unemployment rates.

The best way to hone a young soccer player’s skills is by getting them to obtain training from coaches who are experts at soccer. Vegreville Minor Soccer Association offered this chance at

This camp combined the most popular

elements of British soccer, Tetra Brazil, and a new international curriculum.

The four pillars of soccer development are technical, tactical, mental, and physical. Coaches indicated they also teach on character development based on respect, responsibility, integrity, leadership, and sportsmanship.

Coach Morrison said the kids did well with the training right away in the morning of the first day. They had a high standard for their platform for soccer. “The children gained skills with their passing abilities. The only thing is it would be nice if more children participated.”

Coach McCauley said the children

learned some fundamental skills during the first morning of the camp. They did very well.

Coach McCauley also added that the culture in Ireland is different from the culture in Vegreville. He said the people are a lot nicer in Vegreville. The kids are amazing in Vegreville because they want to play outdoors, are active, and are interested in participating in sports. In Ireland, the kids usually just stay indoors, even when they participated in sports, they play inside.

McCauley added that on July 19, the kids will have a big water fight because it will be their last day and that will be the day they will remember.

Written and directed by Troy Ruptash (formerly of Vegreville, AB), who played the real Don Draper on AMC’s Mad Men, They Who Surround Us (TWSU) honours Ukrainian settlers and their culture.

From the forests of Ukraine, where the UPA struggles to keep the Ukrainian identity alive to the rich farmland of the Canadian Prairies, TWSU is a story of intergenerational trauma, where the past haunts a young Alberta farmer who is dealing with incredible grief after the sudden the loss of his wife.

“They Who Surround Us tells a powerful story, one that I think will resonate with

many people,” said Ruptash. “Cultural Identity, connecting to one’s roots, mental health, grief, loss, and resilience are all themes found in this story.”

Ruptash, who is based in Los Angeles, will also act in the movie. The production team for TWSU includes Sandy and Grant Wilde as executive producers and award-winning producer Rosanne Milliken (all formerly of Vegreville, AB).

The idea for the movie originated after Ruptash noticed that Ukrainians and Ukrainian culture are extremely underrepresented in the film industry.

he did not know existed, Ruptash returned home inspired to finish the script based on his incredible journey.

“I’ve been working in the film and television industry for close to 30 years with some amazing experiences and opportunities, but nothing compares to coming back to Vegreville to tell the story of my ancestors,” said Ruptash. “Having this opportunity to give back to the community that has supported me all these years has filled me with a deep sense of meaning and purpose.”

Casting is currently being finalized and Ruptash is also working with costume designer Deidre Hackman, and Sundance composer Craig Richey.

Ruptash will be hosting free acting workshops in the latter part of July and early

August in Vegreville, for both adults and youth with all levels of experience. Anyone interested in learning more about acting and the film industry is welcome to sign up to participate.

The workshops will include exercises and monologues as well as instruction on what goes into being a background performer (extra) in a movie as there may be upcoming opportunities to be a background performer in They Who Surround Us. (details are available on the TWSU website).

“It’s also a great way to maybe find an undiscovered talent who ends up playing one of the lead or supporting roles in the movie,” said Ruptash.

Filming is tentatively set to begin in mid-August.

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser On July 19 and 20, people from in and around Myrnam celebrated sunny summer days with their annual Myrnam Fair Fun Days.

The weekend events kicked off with a supper of steak, chicken, hamburgers, or hot dogs provided by the Agricultural Society. The plates varied in price, with children ages six and under invitedeat for free, to make sure that families of all

shapes and sizes could enjoy the meal.

Throughout the evening, kids activities and face painting were accompanied by baseball and bean bag sports events, as well as an antique car show.

Fireworks signalled the end of the evening.

On Saturday, the fun started up again bright and early with a pancake breakfast while the parade floats assembled to start at 10:30. Families lined the streets, eager to catch candy and even a

few soft toys.

Included in the parade floats were local businesses, volunteer organizations and services, and politicians.

Hamburgers were served at the arena concession, or a Perogy dinner at the Senior’s Centre offered the chance for those out to enjoy the fair to fill their plate in the company of friends and neighbours one more time before heading home to wind down from the weekend activities.

We just passed our six-month anniversary and decided it was time to expand our family. No, not a child! I’m not ready for that, but we do want a dog. My wife wants a small dog, like a Terrier, while I want something bigger, like a Mastiff. You know, the kind of dog that says “I’ve arrived” when you walk down the street. I want a male dog because I think it would be better for security and compatibility. My wife, however, is stuck on having a girl dog. She thinks a female would be more protective, easier to manage and faster to train.

Carry: Like many guys, male dogs are often more motivated by food than their female counterparts. This can make training them a little easier. However, female dogs have their advantages too.

They are often more independent and less aggressive than males.

Cash: For you two, it sounds like it’s less about choosing the dog’s gender and more about choosing the breed and personality that fits with your lifestyle.

And that’s probably the best approach since you can’t compromise between getting a male or a female!

When you already own a dog, adding a second can be a tricky process. Although there are no set rules, expert breeders often suggest that adding a dog of the opposite sex is a good choice. If you already have a female dog, she is more likely to be accepting of a male dog into the pack. Since male dogs often take a submissive role, the chance for altercations is diminished. When we got our new dog, he immediately loved our six-yearold son, Jake. I’d like to say it was sheer devotion, but I think it had more to do with Jake feeding him half of his lunch.

For weeks, we’ve been teaching Jake that it’s best if the dog only eats dog food and not people food. For the most part he follows the rule quite well.

However, the other day I caught him eating one of his cookies and then feeding one to the dog. He repeated this several times until I reminded him not to feed the dog people food.

“Remember honey,” I said, “Don’t give the doggy peoplecookies.”

“Oh don’t worry Mom,” he corrected me holding up the box. “These are animal crackers.”

The 12th annual Run to the Hills Memorial Rally announces upcoming completion of Wayside Monument Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser Motorcycling can be a dangerous sport, and those who have passed since the last gathering were remembered and celebrated at the 12th annual Run to the Hills Memorial Rally in Two Hills this past weekend.

Guests were invited to camp out for the whole weekend starting Thursday, or to ride out to partake in Saturday’s activities, which included a Show n Shine, memorial service, poker rally, bike rodeo, and dinner entertainment.

“We have an amazing turnout,” said

event organizer Bob Ross, “especially considering how the weather started out on Thursday and Friday as the weekend kicked off… but Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day to hold the rest of our activities, and I think this might be one of our best rallies yet.”

Though the monument, funded by grants and donations, was meant to be

put up this summer and unveiled at the rally, after weeks of rain, they were unable to do any of the installation.

“We will plan for an unveiling celebration in the fall sometime, with more information to follow on social media and a press release,” said Ross.

“It got to the point where we just had to focus on preparing the rally because nothing was going to be able to get done outside. But now that the rally’s done, we’re going to set a date and get the monument up at Wayside Park for people to visit.”

The memorial features the names of fallen riders which were included on a by-donation basis by their loved ones and bold lettering which reads “In Memory of All Fallen Bikers.”

The weekend was tied off with a motor-circus, burlesque show, and musical entertainment provided by rock bands Sideshow and Stuck on Eleven.

Though Ross wasn’t sure who came from the furthest away this time around but have had guests from as far as Los Angeles, and Germany at past events.

OLD VEGREVILLE - CONTINUED FROM FRONT back to Edmonton to register the town, then returned to seed crops. By that fall, the farmers saw their first harvest.

As the west continued to draw in farmers and businessmen from eastern Canada, the United States, and Europe, the town grew quickly and even had two banks, two liveries, a general store, a school, and two churches. When the post office was registered, the town was named after Father Vegreville, in honour of the Jesuit priests from St. Albert who helped to settle the area.

In spite of all this success, the town came to a crossroads in 1905; as Alberta came into its own as a province, the railroad came through with the promise of economic growth, they packed up the whole town and moved North to rebuild Vegreville along the railroad tracks. The local businessmen were excited to move, and the two bank managers even raced to the new location, to see who could move their bank first.

then, they were in such a hurry to get to the railroad… I wonder how many current townspeople wake up in the middle of the night listening to train whistles, and wish that they hadn’t.”

The Old Vegreville School was used until the 1950s. The building as it stands today was rebuilt in 1938 after the old log schoolhouse burnt down. Since classes stopped, the building has been used as the home base of the Social Society and a community centre for card parties and other social events.

Also in recent memory, the original graveyard, restored and re-registered by the Robert family, stands well-maintained and remote, with some plots even having been purchased in the modern-day. “About half of the original graves were for children,” explained Alan Robert, “This was because of the illnesses that were rampant at the time.”

This discovery was made during the process of using old records to replace the original wooden headstones with new stone ones as the site was being restored.

Overall labour force participation in Canada has declined over the last decade but interestingly has grown among people aged 55 and over, reflecting the progress of the demographic bulge known as the baby boom.

In 2016, people aged 55 and over accounted for 36 per cent of Canada’s working-age population – the highest percentage since 1976, the first year of comparable data. This proportion is expected to reach 40 per cent by 2026.

Yet this demographic will eventually retire, opening up large areas of employment to the smaller age cohorts behind. Demand for workers is expected to be high in health care, computer system design and related services, support services for mining, oil and gas extraction, social assistance, legal, accounting and other professional services, arts and entertainment, and food services such as chefs and servers.

Clearly, contrary to popular belief, history teaches that technological change has been marked by increases in total long-term employment, notwithstanding short-term job loss for individuals.

That’s good news.

Canada’s labour market will likely experience continued employment growth (though at lower rates than in

the previous half-century) due to demographic changes and shifts in labour force participation rates.

Our ageing labour force, the retirement of baby boomers, and the creation of new jobs spurred by technology will combine to create a period of chronic labour scarcity, which

means the demand for workers will be high.

1. The first priority for fish management should be to “manage Alberta fish resources for use by Albertans in a sustainable manner that conserves the fish for future generations”. Current management practices that have eliminated harvest on many water bodies have been overly precautionary and have discouraged many anglers from fishing in the province. A policy change that allows a limited harvest while conserving the resource will ensure government managers seek ways of using the fish resources in a sustainable manner.

(The 1982 Fish and Wildlife Policy for Alberta states “The fisheries resource, as a Crown resource, will be utilized in a man-

ner which contributes the most benefit to the citizens of Alberta.)

2. The Alberta Government should adopt the “No net loss of fish habitat policy”. Fish habitat is crucial to the survival of fish populations. A no-net-loss policy would ensure that fish resources are sustained for future generations. It would allow for limited industrial and economic development while requiring that fish habitat be protected, developed or restored for future generations.

3. Fish stocking should be used as a tool to increase fishing opportunities in water bodies with suitable fish habitats. In the future changing environments may

require a variety of fish resources for fish stocks to survive.

4. Sportfishing regulations should be simplified to encourage anglers to participate with low-risk harvesting options that will sustain fish stocks. Such changes should encourage tourism near fish-bearing lakes in support of municipal business and industry.

5. Fisheries biologists and managers should be involving the public in decisionmaking, especially with regard to regulations. Clear and transparent biological information must be readily available for interested people to assess what they’re being told.

Town and Country Day

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser On Wednesday, July 10, the town and country people around Lamont were invited by Lamont Webb’s Machinery to come on down for a BBQ and some farm presentations.

Miles Mackow, general manager of Webb’s Machinery in Lamont, was happy to shed some light onto the firstannual event, which was held to bring in customers from acreages, to show off lawnmowing, haying, and small tractor equipment.

“We’ve invited our customers and anyone else who might want to join us, either from town or an acreage

or a farm, to showcase our rental yard equipment, skid steers, mini excavators, and compact tractors,” said Mackow, “Everything they may need to get that work done around their yard.”

While the dealership has been renting equipment for a long time and is adding new equipment all the time.

Most recently, Mackow says they have expanded their rental base to Plamondon.

For the Wednesday event, they also invited their Traeger dealer out to do a presentation. “We’re a Traeger dealer now too, which is new to us so we wanted to lean into it.”

To complement what Webb’s machinery is known for, which is cash crop equipment, combines, and four-wheel drives, air drills, and sprayers. “We do have all of those things, and it’s where we come from. We honour that heri-

tage and the customer base we still have for it. But we have more than that as well and wanted to offer people the chance to take a look.”

Over a hundred people attended the event from the morning onward to enjoy the event, the BBQ lunch, and a presentation from Barry Yaremcio, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Beef and Forage Specialist, on making quality hay. After lunch, customers were invited out to the Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Grounds, where some haying equipment was waiting to be test-driven to clear the swaths of long grass from what would be parking spaces during the Summer Sizzler Rodeo only a few days after.

Mackow said that the event was the first of what they hope to be many open house events for the community.

The Pedal Pals Earn A Bike program ensured 31 children between the ages of six to 14 who didn’t have a bike had the chance to own a bike when they participated in this program offered by Mental Health Capability Building (MHCB) around A.L. Horton School from July 8 to July 11.

MHCB Wellness Coach, McKenna Makowecki said the children were asked if they wanted to own a bike at the end of the school year and if they said yes, they could participate in this program because it is not based on their family’s income. Canadian Tire and Jumpstart helped to provide the bikes and the helmets. “We wanted to have this program because bikes are expensive to own. We had Alberta Health Services come in to teach the children about helmet safety. The fire department instructed the children on basic first aid. So, if the kids fall, they knew what to do. Also, we had the RCMP come in and they taught the kids about the bylaws in Vegreville and neighborhood’s safety and how to properly put your bike on the rack without getting it stolen and they taught them

about wearing a helmet. This program is good because it teaches the kids so much about bike safety and how to use the bike trails in Vegreville. They also learned if they need to ride their bike without their parents around, the safety and responsibility of themselves when they are on the roads. There were about 10 participants who had to learn how to ride a bike because this was the first time they rode a bike. This went really well.

“Biking is essential for children’s mental health because of the physical activity involved and doing this helps to change the children’s moods and of course, a lot of friendships were made which was nice. It was a fun program overall and we will be in the Vegreville Agricultural Fair parade where the kids will decorate their bikes and ride them in the parade,” Makowecki said. “The children also learned it is about earning a bike. There are rules that go with the word-mentor and this program was about being a mentor towards other kids whether they are younger or older than you.”

For the final day on July 11, the participants took part in an obstacle course where each child rode their bike through this course and the other children cheered them on.

Texas 4000’s Long Ride for a Cure Texas 4000 riders with Town of Vegreville and Fire Department’s professionals.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent The Texas 4000 riders took on the trek to ride the longest annual charity bike ride in the world all in the name of fighting cancer by passing on hope, knowledge, and charity.

People had a chance to meet the Texas 4000 team who are students from the University of Texas at Austin and who were on the Ozarks route when they stopped at the Vegreville Elks/Kinsmen Park on July 17 when on their 47th day of 70 days of their journey which started on May 31 at Austin, Texas.

At the park, Texas 4000 riders expressed why they were motivated to ride and what the experience was like for them so far.

Caroline Bik said she was participating in this ride in honor of one of her friends who passed away from cancer two years ago when he was 21. “I was studying with him at university and the cancer just came on very suddenly. I think about him every day. It was hard on his family. I hope that other families don’t have to go through with that,” Caroline said. “I get to meet a lot of people on this ride and I get to hear their stories of cancer survivors and those who are not with us anymore. We have ridden 2600 miles so far. Every day is so different because you see many different things around you and you are riding with different people; it’s different weather too. It is a beautiful and challenging experience because you know that you are carrying other people with you and you are surrounded by so much love and friendship with the team that you are on that it makes it easier to get through each day. Also, we get to meet the communities and that is a really good experience.”

Tricia Dillawn explained the reason she is riding is because she had three family members who have been affected

by cancer. Her aunt, Beth passed away from cancer when Tricia was seven. “My aunt had four kids, so my mom really stepped into the parental role. Also, two of my grandparents passed away from cancer in the last couple of years. I also worked at an Oncology Cancer Clinic for the last one and a half years. This really had an impact on me because the physician I worked for was the most influential person for me because I am in pre-med school now. He has such a good bedside manner that he is an influential factor on how I will conduct my practice,” Tricia said. “The ride has been amazing so far. There have been highs and lows. You get to really experience the outdoors. I have gone on long road trips and it is not the same when you are not physically outside.”

Brandon Nguyen said he is riding because he had a grandfather when he was younger who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer when it was way too late. He, unfortunately, passed away. He was a father figure to him and it was hard on his parents, aunts, and uncles to lose this central figure in the family.

“I’m riding because I don’t want other families to have to go through with that,” Brandon explained. “Another reason I’m riding is when I was 13, I had a cousin who at the age of nine was diagnosed with cancer. This was a cousin who I played a lot with when I was young. She is fortunately in remission now. She will be 19 soon and will be attending university this fall. I am so proud of her. But seeing what she went through also showed me that cancer doesn’t discriminate; it impacts everyone. My story isn’t unique and I have learned everyone has been impacted by cancer in one form or another. I ride to make a difference in the world. What keeps me motivated every day is the realization that what we do really pales in comparison to what cancer’s patients

and survivors go through.”

After their stop at the park, the Texas 4000 rode to the Vegreville Fire Hall where the Fire Fighters’ professional, personnel, and volunteers treated them to a nice dinner and some firefighting training. Before Texas 4000 left, they were also given breakfast.

For this program, PLC was decorated in a Halloween style.

Halloween activities or playing at the playdoh center with Halloween cookie cutters. The snack had a Halloween theme to it too. At the end, the children were read a Halloween story.

experiments on July 18.

The experiments included DIY Lava Lamps, Exploding Baggies, Chalk Rockets which children said reminded them of firecrackers, making slime

(goop), and other experiments.

The science experiments were laced with mystery and surprise as children watched and shouted when the chemical reaction happened.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Learning to cook and discovering how enjoyable reading is instrumental in having a fulfilling life.

Vegreville Centennial Library offers a free Brunch and Books program for children from six to 12 on Monday’s morning from July 8 to August 12. This program gives children a chance to learn how to cook a breakfast meal as while as have stories read to them relating to the breakfast they made or from the book, “Pancakes to Parathas – Breakfast around the World” by Alice McGinty.

The second session on July 15 found the children learning how to create hash browns and egg nests. Library Programmer, Calina Sokalski and Library Summer Program Assistant, Rylan Langkow taught and helped the children make this breakfast meal.

While children waited for their meal to be cooked, they were given pictures of pancakes which they colored and drew on.

Sokalski said the children learn basic cooking skills and how to work as a team while cooking together.

Christmas in July at Seventh-Day Adventists Church VBS Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent The wonderful feeling of the Christmas season can be experienced all year long when people follow the Christian faith.

Vegreville Seventh Day Adventist Church carried this concept to their Vacation Bible School on July 8 to July 13 when they presented the theme, Christmas in July (God’s gift to you).

This VBS featured bible stories, games, activities, snacks, songs, crafts, and indoor and outdoor activities. With one of the crafts, the children were able to paint on t-shirts where they exclaimed, ‘This is so cute’.

Texas 4000 Riders Get Fire Fighter Training

The Texas 4000 are students from the University of Texas at

After the Texas 4000 riders’ visited Vegreville Elks/Kinsmen Park, the fire department treated the University of Austin students to a nice dinner.

Following this, the

Texas 4000 team were given some firefighting training where they discovered and participated in experiences which included going down a firefighting pole, extracting someone from a vehicle using extraction tools, fire hose coupling, and more.

In the morning of July 18, before the Texas 4000 riders left, they were treated to breakfast.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent There are so many animals and adventures which happen under the sea. Children from the ages of seven to 12 were able to get a glimpse of life beneath the ocean at the Under the Sea

Party at Vegreville Centennial Library on July 19.

Besides having fun and getting to be around other children during summer break, I felt this program helped children learn how to follow instructions as it began with a shark craft where Library Programmer, Calina Sokalski and Library Summer Program Assistant, Rylan Langkow explained how to do the craft while they also went around to help the children with it.

After this, there was a game of ocean BINGO where the winners won a really cool shark bookmark.

This game was followed by a Shark, I

Spy’s activity where the children had to look at the pictures on the bottom and find out how many sharks’ pictures they could find. This activity was timed and the first child who had the right answers won a prize.

The children then went on to make their own themed snacks, which was a graham cracker with blue frosting on it to resemble the ocean. Later, the kids put fish crackers and sprinkles on it and when Sokalski asked how it tasted; the kids gave it thumbs up.

This program is just one of the TD Summer Reading 2019’s learning ventures at the library for children

Park Hop Helps Kids’ Physical Health Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent When children see how much fun it is to engage in physical activities, they might continue to be active during their life.

The second Five Stop Park Hop for 2019 was at Vegreville Lions Club Playground and Spray Park which has the Early Child hood Development domain’s sign focus on ‘Physical Health and Well Being’ so, the park hop’s focus was on this domain.

Centennial Library made sure this park hop splashed with a good time when they planned various activities and games which included an obstacle course station, a craft where children could cut out food items from a magazine and glue the healthy foods under what they should be shopping for the most often. Another station had baby dolls in a tub and a dolls’ clothing line where children learned about being clean, healthy, and taking care of themselves.

Yoga Instructor, Val Miller was a guest who taught children yoga’s moves.

Another booth was set up

with sheets and items to help people learn how to communicate using sign language.

Parents and children could take these sheets home with them.

There was a station where children could blow homemade bubbles.

A treasure hunt was set up.

A section was also arranged with some nice, quiet activities set up to give children another option when they needed some quiet time.

There were give away item

and prizes available too, as well as, vegetables, dip, and water.

Support Coordinator for PLC, Tasha Homeniuk said at each park hop, they start with some free-floating ideas so children can go from centre to centre. Then they wrap off each park hop with some group’s playtime which will help the kids gain some social competence skills where they can play some games, listen to stories, and do some group activities.
