Bullying no match for the power of pink Michael Simpson Staff Writer February 27 will see a sea of pink throughout local schools and businesses in Vegreville as the MODEL Project spearheads the community’s efforts to

stomp out bullying on International Pink Shirt Day. “There’s a lot of community participation this year,” MODEL Project Coord inator Ryan Veldkamp said. “26 businesses and organizations

Ryan Veldkamp, MODEL Project Coordinator, holds aloft a single drop of pink in an approaching storm of pink-shirted anti-bullying awareness that will hit Vegreville on February 27.Veldkamp said he placed an order this year for 605 shirts, up from last year’s order of 50, due to the demand from people wanting to take part in the movement. are taking part in the days’ activities along with the schools. It’s a really simple campaign for people to participate in, it’s about growing awareness. This is how we combat bullying.” Veldkamp said this will be the second year that the MODEL Project has included a community flavour to the day. In addition to the school activities taking place, pink hands filled with messages of support for victims of bullying crafted by the students will be displayed in participating businesses, as well as a community coffee sponsored by Tim Horton’s downtown which will also see tasty pink snacks given away by the Veg-Al Drug Society and the MODEL Project. Veldkamp said last year’s pink shirts were such a hit, after ordering 50 in 2012, he’s now staring at box upon box in his office from this year’s order of 605 shirts that were requested. “175 of those were ordered by local businesses, the rest will be handed out in schools.” Veldkamp said the approaching day of awareness has seen Student Success Coaches from the MODEL Project reaching out and connecting with students relating personal experiences with bullying. Veldkamp said he put on a presentation about cyber bullying for a grade 5-6

class recently and found the response overwhelming in terms of kids who spoke up about their encounters and what can be done to stop it. “Because social media is so prevalent now, kids can’t just go home and get away from bullies. They’re being texted, there’s online sites, you just can’t close the door on it now and kids have a harder time escaping it. This is a fun movement we can take part in where kids can stand up and say ‘it’s not okay’ to bullies.”

The simple beauty of winter

How does one describe winter in Alberta? Some may say it is merely a frozen, ruthless and unforgiving season. Others may take the time to enjoy its simple beauty. These are some of my favourite images this winter. (Courtney King/Photos)

Collaborating in the community

There were many organizations present at the Collaborative Village at A.L. Horton on February 21-22. The two-day evening event showcased what groups are available in Vegreville for parents interested in activities and supports that help keep families together. (Courtney King/Photos)

Courtney King Student Reporter A.L. Horton Elementary School was home to a collaborative village event on the evenings of Wednesday February 20 and Thursday February 21. The purpose of the event was to showcase services within the community. It allowed different groups to come together in the school gym so that they may promote their services and spread awareness. The event proved beneficial to families as well seeing as it offered a means of gathering information about organizations that provide assistance and support. Each of the services put strong emphasis on keeping a family connected by helping them deal with the many obstacles life presents. By bringing all these services together, the event was able to showcase the broad spectrum of assistance available within the community. It displayed the array of services from

KidSport, which works to help rid children of the financial barriers that may prevent them from playing organized sports, to Alberta Health Services’ Children’s Rehabilitation Service that helps with the development of children from birth to 17 years old, to FCSS helping people “from cradle to grave” with the numerous stresses of everyday life. The collaborative village managed to highlight the fact that the citizens of Vegreville and area have access to many services that suit the needs of a variety of people. All of the groups are easily accessible and encourage the involvement of all family members; many of them actually focus on family cooperation as a stepping stone to a better quality of life. Some organizations such as the Vegreville and Area Family Day Home Program demonstrate parent involvement by offering them employment opportunities if they choose to join the pro-

many assistive opportunities offered in their own community. Everyone who experienced the event was subject to a friendly and informative environment while enjoying communicating with one another over snacks and refreshments that were provided.

A.L. Horton School hosts a world of wonder

A customer writes out a cheque for the purchase of a book at A.L. Horton School Library. (Rosanne Fortier/Photo)

Rosanne Fortier Colors, illustrations and words abounded, making it difficult for customers to put the book down at A.L. Horton School Book Fair on February 20 - 21. There were aids for school work too with a booth of vibrant pencils, erasers, pencil sharpeners, picture book marks and even a few books with toys to supplement the plot. Gladys Menzak, School Librarian was circulating around, sharing the eagerness of the customers when they opened a book, while assisting them with making the right purchase.

“I have a passion for children books and love sharing this world with them. We have a great time during story time,” she said. Menzak went on to mention what the book sale generated. “This sale went very well. We had very good support from students, staff and parents. The funds are used to enhance our book collection. It’s great to see that staff and parents encourage the students to read and explore the world of books. There are a few chances to do this because these sales are held three times a year in conjunction with parent/ teacher interviews.”

Your 401k in 2018 We are in a bear market. Yes, I know the market averages have been going up since 2009, but look at your 401K or other long term retirement/savings portfolio. Since the year 2000 has it been increasing? Then subtract the additions made during that period and look again. In almost every case I have seen the total amount is less. Financial history documents there have been 16 to 18 year bull and bear cycles going back more than 100 years. I have pointed out the bull cycle that started in 1982 and called the end in 2000. For anyone invested

verbiage from Washington is “government investment”. That is another way of saying more taxes. Show me one government program that makes money. There isn’t even one. All 401Ks are in the grip of #1 and #3 which will continue to shrink the return for investors. But people are seeing the major averages go up. Why? This is an illusion caused by the excessive printing of fake (fiat) money by the Federal Reserve (which is neither Federal nor has any Reserves). There is no place for this fake money to go except into stocks because they seem to be giving a better return than bonds. Unfortunately more than

90% of mutual fund managers do NOT know how to manage (protect) client money. When the market started down in 2000 did your fund manager sell or did he hold and let you watch your funds disappear? How about the same question for 2008? There is another problem that has not been mentioned by anyone yet. We all know Congress has stolen (that is the right word) the money us working people paid into Social Security. My fear is Washington is going to seize all 401Ks to “protect us” from the stock market cycles or some such excuse. Kiss your money good bye. Every investor should have an exit plan. Don’t rely on a know-nothing manager.

If you don’t take charge what do you think your 401K will be worth in 2018? Al’s new E-book (32pages) is available on Amazon.com for 99 cents. It explains the Golden Cross and the Death Cross. These are well known methods of determining long term trends in the market. If you learned one method to protect your money this would have kept you out of the 2000and 2008 crashes. It will keep you out of the next crash that is coming soon. The title is Never Lose Money in the Stock Market Again on www.amazon.com

Lamont Public Library hosts Family Literacy Day Denise Dorland Chairperson Lamont County Library Board Sixteen children along with parents, grandparents, volunteers, and staff took part in the 2013 Family Literacy Day event hosted by the Lamont Public Library on Saturday,

January 26th. Everyone enjoyed a craft, story-time, puzzles, games, colouring, and many other literacy activities before the entertainment began. Ernestine Hatpin and the Prairie Dogs had everyone up and moving during their fast-paced selection of songs and actions. Before heading home every

child received a take-home bag filled with some wonderful donations from Lamont businesses and organizations, plus a duotang filled with literacy activities to work on at home. The event was a collaboration between the Lamont Public Library, the Lamont County Community Adult Learning Council (CALC) and the Lamont County Library Board (LCLB).

CALC and LCLB hope to see this become a yearly event with each library in Lamont County taking turns to host. This year’s theme was 15 Minutes of Fun. According to ABC Life Literacy Canada reading and writing skills can improve with families setting aside just 15 minutes a day to read, play a game, write a letter or follow a recipe. Family Literacy Day is a national event celebrated every January 27.

The world has a place for everyone

Rosanne Fortier Pink Shirt Day, February 27 is a nationally recognized day for anti-bullying awareness where participants wear a pink shirt to promote acceptance and kindness. Why do we have to acknowledge this concept? From the moment an infant draws their

first breath, the baby needs to be cuddled, talked to or smiled at by their parents or caregivers. Otherwise, they can suffer from failure to thrive. This basic need to connect with other people travels with us throughout life. Bullying is a social attack that can be

verbal, social, physical or cyber bullying. Parents are their child’s first teachers. They must reflect on their own prejudices or ignorance. Are they not engaging with or encouraging a particular social group? Acceptance of all people can be achieved by becoming educated or exposed to diverse individuals. Wranglers looking for strong finish heading to provincials

The Vegreville Midget A Wranglers were in action against the Hobbema Maskwacis Midget A team in Vegreville on February 15, coming out with a 6-2 win. Wrangler Coach Craig Steinbach is confident on a strong showing from his team at provincials in Fort McMurray in late March. (Michael Simpson/Photos)

Michael Simpson Staff Writer The Vegreville Midget A Wranglers were out in force

against Hobbema’s Maskwacis Midget A team on February 15 in one of their last regular season games with a 6-2 win. Both clubs put on a good show for the fans with several end-to-end rushes, ultimately with the Wranglers triumphing. Wrangler Coach Craig Steinbach said they had to wrestle momentum back from the other team on a few occasions. “We were challenged throughout the game and fortunately able to capitalize on some of our scoring chances when it seemed to count,” he said. “Hobbema was a very strong team in the corners where we like to chuck the puck, and was able to shift momentum a few times and had a number of scoring chances.”

UPCOMING EVENTS

February 25, 2013

Steinbach said his team has played well this year. “The boys have been very committed, and no one has suffered any serious injuries. We should end up in second or possibly first place overall

in the league [heading into provincials].” The Wranglers will be competing in “AA Minor” in Fort McMurray from March 21-24 for provincials. “We know that the competition will be strong,

however we’re optimistic that if we’re disciplined with our skating and puck movement we can compete and place well,” Steinbach said.

Besides obtaining knowledge, parents can model acceptable behavior. If they get angry, shout, hit, or call their spouse or child names on a regular basis, the children might learn that this is the way to act and then do it too. Television shows and internet viewing must be monitored. Also, explain to your children that bullying is wrong and how it makes the victim feel. They can never accept that bullying is a fine behavior or a part of growing up. Then praise them when they show empathy to other kids and adults and finally, obtain counseling for children who bully others. Why must we start early? Bullying happens whenever people relate to each other as a school, church, family, the workplace, home and neighborhoods. Proactive Behavioral-Management stated on March 2011 – 60 per cent of middle school students say that they have been bullied. The pain lives on. Bullying Statistics stated that bully victims are between two and nine times more likely to consider suicide than non-victims. The bully is six times more likely to be incarcerated by the age of 24; two-thirds of students who are targets become bullies. It’s beneficial to recognize this at schools because where there are bullying programs,

bullying is reduced by 50 per cent. Also, the debate continues as what causes bullies. Some studies stated that bullies are selfish individuals with high self-esteem and they have low empathy for others. Whereas, there are other examinations pointed out that bullies have low selfesteem and suffer from inner turmoil. No matter which is correct, bullies have behavioral, social and emotional deficiencies. Bob Sullo stated that human beings are driven to bully in order to satisfy their need to connect and belong, be powerful, free, to have fun, and to feel safe and secure. They achieve this by bullying because even though the bullies’ friends hang out with them to avoid being their next target, the bullies don’t understand this concept so they feel accepted by doing this. Most individuals achieve power through doing well at school, athletics, the arts and workplace. Bullies occasionally earn their self-esteem this way also, but the majority of the time they do poorly in these areas. Hence, bullying produces a sense of power within them. Therefore, parents, educators and employers need to access children and adults to find their talents and work with them. Bullying is a way to achieve autonomy. A possible way to solve this is by setting a limit on rules. They feel it is fun. For instance, cyber-bullying uses a method where the victim is never seen or heard. As a result, they find a way to enjoy themselves with seeing the victim’s reaction. Sometimes bullies do it so they’ll not get bullied too. Kids Health had some tips on helping the victim because children do not always say when they are experiencing bullying. You might have to use finger puppets, read a book, or watch a DVD to discover this. As well as, tell the child to avoid the bully, if they cannot prevent this have a relative, friend, or acquaintance near them, tell the child not to give the bully a reaction, they could use a technique to calm down. A child could tell them to stop, walk away, do something else, and try to ignore the bully because the bully enjoys a reaction. Finally, it is wise to get children to join a club, sports program or any activity where they can meet friends and do something that will increase their confidence and help them deal with any negative feedback they received.

CHMILAR, Olga March 3, 2010 Don’t remember me with sadness, Don’t remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We’ve had throughout the years. Then when the summer sunshine, Awakes the flowers in bloom, I’ll walk that light from heaven. Around the corners of every room. Do the things we did before, The same in every way, Just whisper a little prayer to me, At the dawn of every day. Just think of me as present, Don’t think of me as past, For a wife’s, mother’s & baba’s love is a blessing, In death it still can last. Forget your troubles and your worries, They are mine forevermore, I’ll watch and care and love you, From heaven’s open door. Your loving husband Joe, children, grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

KUTRYK, Francis February 25, 1992 In loving memory of our dear Mother, Grandmother and GreatGrandmother, Francis Kutryk, who passed away February 25th, 1992. Twenty one years has passed since that sad day, When the one we loved was called away. What we would give if we could say, I guess I’ll go see her today. To hear her voice, to see her smile, To sit and talk to her awhile. Though her smile is gone forever, And her hand we cannot touch. We still have all the memories, Of a mom we loved so much. So many things have happened since you were called away, So many things we could have shared had you been here today. How many times we need your skilled and gentle hands, Your wisdom and your wit… The love you gave to all…your laughter and your silent tears. Put your arms around her God and give her special care, Make up for all she suffered, And for all that seemed unfair. To those who have a Mother, Treat her with love and care. For you’ll never know the heartache, Until she isn’t there. Sadly missed and always remembered by Ed & Rose Jacula, Ernie & Jan Cheremshynski, Russell & Betty Berezanski & Anton Kutryk & Families

Ukrainian Bilingual Reezdvo celebration Home of the Week

Sheldon Werenka, Brody Wakaruk, Brandon Bay, Logan Fried Submitted Kindergarten to grade 6 st udents celebrated Reezdvo, a Ukrainian Christmas celebration. The celebration was held at A.L. Horton Elementary School. Mrs. Kuhn’s Kindergartens, Mrs. Hyshka’s grade ones, Mr. Sliwkanich’s grade twos, Mrs. Bombak’s grade three and fours, and Mr. Howell’s grade five and sixes came together to sing Christmas carols and put on the famous Malanka skit. The Malanka skit was very entertaining, including a kolomeyka. In the Reezdvo skit, there are two children who find out what Ukrainians do on Ukrainian Christmas. They find out that Ukrainians eat 12 meatless dishes, sing Christmas carols, and in this case, a Malanka skit! The Malanka skit is about

a girl named Malanka, who gets captured by a dragon. Then a boy named Vasyl saves Malanka. This was a lot of fun to watch as there were many awesome dances performed as solos and duets by the characters. After the concert, the food was ready to eat. The menu had varenyky (perogies), cabbage rolls, fish, mushroom, kutia, borsht, poppyseed cake, honey cake, pampushky, and kolach. The event also had a silent auction. There was super cool stuff like an R/C car, a PEZ car candy dispenser, a flameless candle, and much more!
