Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Santa came bearing gifts of huge bags of popcorn which he gave to every resident of Heritage House on December 14.

The jolly guy in Red’s company was followed by entertainment by the band, The Swinging Seniors. The group has been around for 20 years. Some members have changed over the years and other former members passed away.

The band members are from Edmonton and Spruce Grove.

They performed Big Band music from the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, country, rock n’ roll, old fiddle tunes, Ukrainian tunes, and Christmas songs.

“We cater to seniors. There is very little money in performing music. We play and sing music to minister to the seniors and to lift up their spirits. This is something different for them to do and enjoy. Our music brings back fond old memories,” said Ralph Mauer, who sings and plays ukulele player for the band.

11:11 – Traffic stop conducted. The driver was unable to produce a valid drivers license. A voluntary penalty of $233 was issued.

11:13 – Subject arrested on outstanding warrants. During the arrest, meth was found and the subject was charged accordingly.

18:42 – Report of mischief in Vegreville.

The complainant indicated that one male had smashed the window in a vehicle.

Members attended and it was determined that all the parties involved were family members. No witnesses were willing to provide a statement and no charges were handed out.

20:08 – Report of loud music from a neighbouring house. It was reported that this was going on all day and all night.

Members attended and there was no music playing when they were on the property. This is an ongoing dispute between neighbours.

December 17

00:04 – Report of a suspicious vehicle with two unknown occupants near a business in Mundare. The complainant indicated in a follow up call that the vehicle had moved to another business. Members attended but the vehicle was unable to be located.

04:21 – Report of a break and enter in progress to a business in Mundare. Members attended but the suspects were gone when they arrived. The safe from the business was located down the alley with break and enter tools which were retrieved for examination. Fingerprints were obtained on scene for purposes of identification.

Investigation ongoing.

04:27 – Report of a break and enter to a public building in Hilliard. Members attended. It was determined that the safe had been taken along with other items.

Investigation ongoing.

12:23 – Report of Mitsubishi Lancer driving into a power pole near an approach.

The driver attempted to drive away but was arrested. A field sobriety test was conducted and the driver failed.

The driver was determined to be impaired and the vehicle was towed. The driver was arrested for impaired driving, charged accordingly and later released to family members with documents for court.

13:03 – Report from a student at a Vegreville school regarding 2 other students who had posted a video on social media. The video appeared to show the students smoking marijuana while in a vehicle. The report was passed on to the school principal for follow up.

13:14 – 15:15 Traffic enforcement con-

ducted resulting in multiple speeding tickets (over 10).

15:27 – Report of a fuel theft from a rural property. A fence was cut and a small amount of diesel fuel was stolen.

Under investigation.

19:09 – Report of an assault during a family dispute. One unwanted male entered the home and refused to leave when asked.

The subject of the complaint assaulted multiple people and then left. Members attended and found the male at a Vegreville business. He was arrested, charged with assault on one minor and later released to a different family member with documents for court.

December 18

06:55 – Report of a stolen truck out of Mundare. The truck along with cash and tools that were in the truck were taken. The vehicle was later recovered at a later time North of Mundare.

06:57 – Report of a stolen vehicle overnight. The vehicle was recovered North of Mundare at a later date.

07:03 – Report of mischief to a vehicle. A window was smashed to gain entry and personal items were stolen. CCTV is being reviewed. Under investigation.

08:00 – A tip was received about a possible stolen vehicle. The vehicle’s plate was determined to be stolen. The vehicle was located and a subject was found in the drivers seat. The subject was arrested, lodged in cells and brought before a Justice of the Peace who then released the subject on a $500 cash bail and documents for court.

11:11 - Traffic enforcement conducted including tickets issued for one vehicle (window tint, vehicle equipment and speeding). Other tickets were for speeding including one with a voluntary penalty of $439.

12:58 – Report of an alarm at a residence. Members attended. Damage was found to the residence and garage. One item was determined to be stolen. Under investigation.

December 19

00:49 – Report of trespassing. Members attended and it appears that people have been using the property as a shortcut for walking traffic.

11:07 – Report of domestic dispute. A male showed up to the door of an Ex’s residence. He had previously threatened the female. Members attended and arrested the male. The subject was found to be in possession of weapons which was in breach of his recognisance. He was held for a hearing and then remanded into custody.

13:25 - Traffic enforcement resulting in multiple speeding tickets and failing to provide insurance card.

December 20

14:07 – Speeding ticket issued with a voluntary penalty of $414.

15:42 – Report of a vehicle in the ditch.

Members attended and a male was located in the vehicle, appeared to be in a state of confusion and possibly in medical distress.

The male was transported to the Vegreville Hospital and it was determined that he had a very high blood sugar level. The driver was issued a 24 hour suspension, his license was seized and the vehicle towed.

19:53 – Report of an erratic driver. A description was given and located. A traffic stop was conducted in Vegreville and the driver was issued a roadside breath demand.

The result was a 0% alcohol content.

23:22 – Report of a verbal argument between 2 people where a male indicated that he would shoot himself with his rifle.

Members attended. The male was intoxicated but co-operative. Firearms were seized for an expired PAL. No charges were issued.

23:51 – Request to assist fire department.

Members attended and found a vehicle on fire on private property. The owner stated that there was a control burn underway.

The owner indicated that he did not like the way the fire was burning and in an attempt to move the burning bale, the owner drove his truck into the burning bale and got stuck. The vehicle burnt.

December 21

11:30 – Report of a theft from a vehicle overnight. Registration, insurance and a parking placard were taken from the unlocked vehicle.

14:59 – Report of a large bale on the highway. Emcon was advised and members attended. A local farmer had seen the bale and returned with a tractor to clear the bale from the roadway. *** score one for good neighbours

December 22

18:42 – Traffic stop conducted due to burnt out taillight. The vehicle came back as an uninsured vehicle with expired registration. Vehicle was towed and the driver was charged accordingly.

Vegreville RCMP seek assistance to identify suspect of break & enter Submitted

During the early morning of December 10, 2019, a shop in the County of Minburn was broken into. The activity was captured on surveillance and shows the suspect attempting to steal fuel from the property.

The suspect was unable to get away with anything significant however the property was damaged and this is not believed to be the first attempt.

Protest Staged Outside MLA’s Constituency Office in Vegreville Michelle Pinon News Advertiser

Vegreville resident Dane Woychuk took inspiration from the ‘Coal for Kenney’ campaign and spearheaded a protest that was held outside of United Conservative Party (UCP) MLA Jackie ArmstrongHomeniuk’s constituency off ice Wednesday afternoon.

Woychuk, along with Vegreville resident Ian Stewart, Edmonton resident Tarra Shipman, and Fort Saskatchewan resident Lori Gray, her two young children and grandmother, marched from the Co-op food store parking lot to the MLA’s office shortly after 1 p.m. The office door was locked so they left hand written messages on black paper, a Christmas stocking and card, and black painted rocks made to simulate lumps of coal outside for Armstrong-Homeniuk.

As to why Woychuk wanted to get involved in the campaign, he explained that he saw the ‘Coal for Kenney’ website advertised on a couple of social media sites, Facebook

and Twitter and decided to take action of his own.

Woychuk added: “I wanted to get personally involved when I realized how much

frustration with trying to get a meeting with MLA Armstrong-Homeniuk.”

According to a press release that was distributed to various media outlets prior to the

Edmonton, and in support of its grassroots ‘Coal for Kenney’ campaign that was designed to help them voice their anger and come together in solidarity. People were also encouraged to “share stories about how the UCP is making their lives worse” and to organize coal deliveries to UCP MLA offices.

Ian Stewart said he was participating in the protest because he works with people who have disabilities and wanted to use his voice to act for them. Tarra Shipman, who is involved with the Alberta Hummingbird Project Facebook group, said she was advocating for people with developmental disabilities. Lori Gray said she has a lot of concerns regarding government cutbacks to health care, education, seniors pensions as well as the AISH (Assured Income for the Severley Handicapped) program, and wanted to add her presence at the protest.

The Attack on Legal Gun Owners Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser - Opinion Following through on an election promise, the Trudeau Liberals have started the ball rolling on a new gun control proposal. This is a proposal that appears to be ill-informed at best and a direct attack on hunters, farmers and sport shooters.

It is clear that many in large cities (some of whom have never left city limits) and many politicians do not have an accurate picture of the reality of gun laws in Canada or real crime statistics. We already have some of the most restrictive laws in the world, and quite frankly, they work very well for legal gun owners.

Liberal spokesperson Carlene Variyan once stated that “Hunters do not use or need assault weapons”. A grossly uninformed comment some would say. They consider any weapon that is semi-automatic to be an assault weapon. While claiming that their purpose is “to ban military-style assault rifles,” they have not specified which semi-automatic weapons would be banned.

History Professor and author Blake Brown has stated that in theory, the government could ban a category of weapon and then take them from owners without compensation. However discussion of a buy back program like in New Zealand has been bandied about. The program there quickly resulted in more than 32,000 prohibited weapons being turned in and $62 mil-

lion paid out as compensation.

A similar buyback program in Canada could cost between $400 million and $600 million despite the Liberals not actually providing any financial information on their platform.

There has also been discussion of a hand gun ban. However, the Liberals want to pass the buck on that one. They will empower individual municipalities to make their own gun bans.

Toronto and Vancouver are two large cities that have voiced support for hand gun bans.

One has to think that much of the information used to develop this policy comes from poor data. In 2018, the Canadian Press service released a story that indicated the number of “crime guns” were sourced 50-50 between domestic sources and those smuggled in from the U.S. In reaction, during the election, the NDP also said it would ban handguns outright.

Plainly put the story and the data it was based on were completely wrong. Information obtained via freedom of information requests from the Toronto Police Service’s records showed that most guns used in crimes have their serial numbers destroyed making them almost impossible to trace. Those that could be traced were overwhelmingly (82%) sourced from the U.S. and the number originating from Canada was trending down.

One has to wonder why the Liberals are so focused on legal gun owners if for no other reason than to pander to uninformed large city voters. Perhaps there is also a deep rooted disdain for rural Canadians, gun owners or sport shooters. When decisions are not based in logic, we can only guess as to the driving force.

Even the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police would not support a ban on handguns. Vancouver police chief Adam Palmer, who heads the organization, has stated that Canada already has strong firearms regulations and no other law is required. Palmer added that handguns would be around even with a ban.

One of the more delusional statements on the Liberal web site regarding their gun control platform is the following: They will “limit the glorification of violence, by changing the way firearms are advertised, marketed, and sold in Canada.” It is hard to convey how out of touch a statement like that is. Clearly in line with other head-in-the-clouds statements, I’m not sure anyone in the Liberal party has ever seen a movie or video game. Do they seriously want to spend tax dollars trying to change advertising to reduce the glorification of violence? Here’s a hint for the Liberal party.... “John Wick”. Here are a few more. How about any Bruce Willis, Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone or Arnold Schwarzenegger movie? I invite you join us in reality where we have movies and video games. The gun in the Cabela’s flyer doesn’t promote glorification of violence.

Firm financial estimates have not been released, but some experts estimate that 80% of the proposed Liberal budget for gun control will be focused on legal gun owners. That leaves the remaining 20% going towards all other areas. These areas include education, mental health support and of course the attempt to curb the influx of the 82% of crime guns from the US. Clearly, you can’t fix stupid. It appears that the approach to gun violence is much like that for budgets. No real plan, just warm, fuzzy platitudes.

Mr. Sembaliuk’s creative vision and passion for Ukrainian culture resulted in a vital economic driver for our region. In 2019, a survey conducted through the Town of Vegreville’s Visitor Information Centre showed that 55% of participants came specifically to see our famous Pysanka. The Town also estimates that during the peak of the 2019 tourism season, over 25,000 individuals visited the Elks/Kinsmen Park, the home of our Pysanka.

The Vegreville Chamber of Commerce will be forever appreciative of Mr. Sembaliuk and his contribution to our Town, and we extend our condolences to his family and friends.

90 Years Ago – December 25, 1929

At a meeting of the directors of the Exhibition Association Mr. Payne asked that he be not nominated for president for the ensuing year. He had been eight years in the chair and the time had come for some other director to assume the burden. In spite of a strong plea for release, he was pressed to accept office for one more year. The Secretary-Manager tendered his resignation. He felt that he was unable to continue this work any longer and asked the directors to accept his hearty thanks for their kindness to him during his five years of office.

The Canadian Utilities Ltd. appear to have found a better bargain than they anticipated when they bought out the municipal plant here and commenced extensions both east and west. For the company it must be said that they have taken every possible precaution to look after their customers, but the customers increased faster than the equipment. As a result, light and power have both been somewhat intermittent during the past few days.

75 Years Ago - December 20, 1944

Essentially permits are no longer required to purchase new hot air furnaces, the Wartime Prices and Trade Board announces. Essential requirements having been assured by the use of essential certificates, available supplies can now be permitted to move in the normal way, G.N. McLeswort, administrator of plumbing and heating supplies explained.

Canada’s butter ration is to be reduced to six ounces per person per week, the Wartime Prices and Trade Board announces.

Effective January 1, three coupons will become valid each month instead of four. These coupons will become valid singly instead of in pairs and will not expire at the month end as heretofore. Quotas to restaurants and other quotes will be cut although no reduction to hospitals is contemplated.

The small but active Catholic Congregation in Willingdon has purchased the house at the corner facing the hospital. The members of the congregation are busy erecting the altar and benches.

It is confidently expected that by Christmas midnight, mass can be read in the building. The Rev. Fr. Strickland will officiate at the occasion.

American armies fighting along the German border face a tire shortage so serious it threatens to tie up 10 per cent of all army vehicles by early February, Gen. Eisenhower declared. “I am not exaggerating when I say that the war will be needlessly extended unless we can extract every possible mile from our tires and use them only as we find it necessary to do so,” Gen. Eisenhower advised his officers and men in a letter.

50 Years Ago – December 24, 1969

Well known Vegreville merchant Robert Robert was inducted into office as president of the Vegreville Chamber of Commerce last week. Mayor Koshuta performed the duty for the Chamber. The new president succeeds Bob Sherman who has held the post for the past year.

Susan Ruptash, ten year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ruptash of Lavoy, skated off with top honors in the Ladies’ Novice Class, at the Central Alberta Skating Competitions, held in Innisfail on December 13th and 14th. Also Brenda Bird placed second in the Ladies’ Novice Class, thus giving Vegreville the honor of taking both first and second standing in a group of fourteen contestants.

On Saturday Brenda took first place in the Figures Competition with 105.2 points, and Susan Ruptash was second with 103 points.

The students and staff of the St. Mary’s school were delighted to receive the news that several of their students were announced as winners in the Edmonton Journal Christmas Art contest; The happy young artists were: David Stepanki, grade 2, who won first prize; Marcia Kuly, grade 2; Kelly Bradshaw, grade 3; Gregory Horon, grade 3; and Darlene Slepanki, grade 3; who all won Honourable Mention.

Vegreville Jaycettes carolled for the Lions Club after the Jaycees crashed the Lions Christmas party. The Lions were “shook down” for donations to the Library Building Fund.

Vegreville Jaycees will sponsor a beard growing contest in conjunction with their annual Polar Pow Wow. This year there will be four categories and it is planned to have the local barbers judge the beards and present trophies.

The Vegreville Chamber of Commerce will forward a letter to town council asking that the U-turn be done away with at the intersection of Main Street and 52nd Ave. adjacent to the Alberta Hotel.

25 Years Ago – December 28, 1994

Vegreville Town Council voted at its meeting to set aside $15,000.00 from the 1995 budget for “future capital transportation purposes.”

Alberta Independence Push Requires Care Marco Navarro-Genie Frontier Centre for Public Policy

Whether they endorse or oppose the notion of an independent Alberta, Albertans would do well to proceed with caution.

While Quebec went through two referendums in 15 years, it took decades for that province’s sovereignty movement to develop. After the near-victory in 1995, the Bloc Québécois leader spoke about the need for “winning conditions” before trying again.

Albertans who favour independence ought to consider what it takes to win before trying because losing would have dire political consequences.

Do pro-separation Albertans have the winning conditions?

In 1980 and 1995, Quebec sovereigntists controlled the provincial government and enjoyed the leadership of a sitting premier who supported sovereignty.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is undoubtedly a great Albertan but those who know him know he’s a Canadian patriot. Whether Kenney would ever support the independence option for Alberta is a question best posed to him. But it’s clear he doesn’t support it now.

Quebec sovereigntists controlled the legislature and key institutions. That gave them control of the referendum agenda, the legislation needed to enable it, the question to ask and how to ask it, the timing of the vote, the rules for campaigning and campaign finance.

Quebec sovereigntists also possessed a secular mythmaking machine. The history of Canada taught in schools was organized as a litany of hardships for Quebec, curated for one to conclude that the creation of a new state for the Quebec nation was the natural, liberating outcome.

Alberta’s curriculum doesn’t even include provincial history.

Quebec sovereigntists captured government by establishing an informal umbrella institution, the Parti Québécois (PQ), mandated to carry political water for the cause of independence.

Albertans interested in the sovereignty option may be numerous, but they are far

from coalescing into a single alliance and lack a leader with the requisite ability, gravitas, imagination and organizational skills.

Three prominent organizations merged to form the PQ in 1968 under René Levesque leadership. From there, a rocky road followed. It took them eight years to capture the government and 12 years to hold a referendum on their terms.

Quebec sovereigntists today have a base and steady support among about one-quarter of the voters on any random day. They enjoy strong support among trade unions and the intellectual class.

Right now, about one-third of Albertans apparently support the notion of an independent Alberta but that number has not been sustained and steady. It remains to be seen if it can last and whether it has room to grow.

In Alberta, trade unions and the intellectual class favour the federal option, but a good deal of the entrepreneurial class supports independence.

In 1995, Quebec sovereigntists had supporting representatives in Ottawa (the Bloc Quebecois). This isn’t a necessity, but it gave the independence option credibility and visibility, inside and outside Quebec.

Alberta’s federal representatives were elected as federalists. Some might harbour sympathies with the sovereignty movement but they’re not going to voice them openly, and many will naturally oppose it.

Quebec sovereigntists had a less Ottawa-centered media. Radio-Canada workers had favourable biases toward Quebec and less allegiance to the CBC masters in Toronto. The same for TVA and the local radio stations.

Most of the traditional media and some of the alternative media in Alberta are based in Toronto. The recently resurrected Western Standard may be one of the few exceptions.

Among the many disadvantages for Alberta sovereigntists, there are a couple of advantages their Quebec counterparts didn’t enjoy. The federal governments at the time of the Quebec referendums had relatively strong leadership. Similarly, Canadians then possessed an emotional attachment to Quebec that in most parts of Canada doesn’t exist for Alberta today. Their respective ineptitude and indifference may be assets.

Next Step Senior High School hosts Holiday Lunch Michelle Pinon News Advertiser

Students and staff at Next Step Senior High School in Vegreville hosted a lavish and impressive holiday feast for

Rogers described the school as an outlet for students who don’t desire to go to Vegreville Composite High School. She said a lot of the students have been homeschooled, are athletes, want or need to work, want to finish school early or upgrade their marks,and that doesn’t usually fit into the regular school schedule.

She added that community involvement is a big part of the school, and Next Step students have assisted special needs students at the elementary school, helped English as a Second Language students, and assisted with various activities involving seniors citizens.

“The school for me was a chance to complete work at my own pace,” said Austin Liddle, who has been studying at the school for the past three years. He explained that because of his job he can’t come to school everyday. He said the online courses the school offers have also been a great option for him.

“I chose to come here because I was having trouble following along and getting help from teachers,” stated Grade 12 student Lily Voutier. “Here you can always get help.” Because of the low student to teacher ratio, Voutier has been able to access to all the resources she requires.

Guest Rod Stewart, an executive member with the Royal Canadian Legion in Vegreville, thanked the students, parents and staff following the meal.

Stewart said the school “fills a very important niche” in education for young people. “Obviously

Most of the traditions followed during New Years Eve in Denmark, seem to be standing on a humorous side. Thus, people pleasantly observe them with an element of fun. Among those many traditions, there is one most prominent and pleasurable tradition. If one finds broken dishes at one’s threshold, one might feel odd and bad.

But, an exact opposite feeling is felt in Denmark, if same occurs on New Years Eve. People save dishes all through the year, to only throw them at the doors of their friends and neighbors on New Years Eve. The more one’s door gets strike by the broken dishes reflects that one has many friends in life, and many of those friends love and like him.

Bringing Christmas Cheer to Vegreville Manor Submitted

Debbie Fedoruk held her annual, piano and voice, Christmas recitals at Vegreville Manor on December 6 and 7.

A total of 25 students participated, and they performed a wide variety of Christmas carols. Some played piano solos, while a few students were brave enough to play while they sang. There were a couple of vocal duets and a team of sisters who worked together, one accompanying while the other sang. Debbie Fedoruk accompanied most of the students who sang and did some singing herself.

There was an appreciative audience of around 50 seniors, parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters. The students were well prepared, and the recitals were a big success. Don Harfield of Perogies and Jam provided the sound equipment.

Lillian is survived by her loving family, children Rita (Arden), Bev (Brian), Diane (Leonard), Connie (Dale), Vonnie (Dean) and Michelle (Sebastien); 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Tanya; sister Roseanne (Ken); along with numerous relatives and friends. Lillian was predeceased by her first husband William Andriashyk and her second husband Walter Borody; son Clark Andriashyk; grandson Darcy Delisle; 5 brothers and 4 sisters.

A Funeral Service was held on Monday, December 23, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Autumn Rose Funeral Home in Vegreville, Alberta with Rev. Fr. Benny Ambrosie officiating. Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery.

Seniors’ Christmas Memories from the Past Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent I believe everyone has special Christmas memories as this festive season

has so many sights, sounds, tastes, and feelings of generosity and love for others.

When I asked a few seniors what they especially remember about Christmas from the past, I gathered these comments.

Linda Dowhaniuk said memories of Christmas for Catherine Dowhaniuk, who now resides at the Homestead Lodge in Vegreville, really are from those spent with family and friends. “The table groaning with everything from ham, turkey, cabbage rolls, cornmeal casserole, and so many Ukrainian and German dishes. Creamy desserts and pies too. As many as 15 people at a time in her little house, perched on arms of chairs, couches and folding chairs, with plates rounded with great food, with laughter and happy chat filling the air. She says she misses those days very much, as do we all,” Linda explained.

Another senior, Fern Van Den Dolder, who resides in her own home told the story from Christmas many years ago when she was nine-years-old when she received a Eathon Beauty doll from Santa Claus. “This was during the depression and there wasn’t any money.

There were 11 kids in my family. But for most people, to receive a gift like this, that was something for those days. I know a woman who said she saw a hankerchief under the tree one Christmas morning and she was so excited. But presents weren’t the most important thing in our days, a big meal was,” Fern said. “We used to look forward to having mincemeat pie, a bag of candy, nuts, an orange and an apple. To even get a bag of candy meant so much in those days as we only received candy at Christmas.”

They don’t have three-quarters of all the favourable elements that Quebec sovereigntists had and still lost. For Alberta to achieve winning referendum conditions, it will take more than angry demonstrations.

Speeding toward a failing referendum on independence next year would almost ensure a loss, which would leave Alberta weaker and less able to protect itself from a predatory anti-oil Ottawa and the destructive eco-nirvana movement.

Even if the independence of Alberta were the right path, rushing to it can do the cause no favours.

Homestead Senior Citizens Lodge hosted its annual Christmas Dinner and Raffle for residents and family mem-

bers on December 15.

There was a large buffet with festive food and dishes from every holiday.

Anita and Friends, which is a local music group, performed old traditional and original country music for the crowd.

The band is composed of Pearl Kuhn on vocals and guitar, Albert Stewart on fiddle, Jim Davis on vocals and guitar,

Brian Esak on bass. Fellow band member Anita Lemko, the other member of the band, was unable to attend the event.

Santa paid a visit and handed out candy canes for all the residents.

The event was a great opportunity for residents and their families to enjoy Christmas together. Funds from the raffle will be used for the residents comfort and care.

PROTEST STAGED - CONTINUED from PAGE 3 Homeniuk and her UCP colleagues know that he, and other protesters, were not going to “sit idly by” and allow rollbacks, cuts and austerity measures to happen.

“That we will hold her and the Kenney government accountable for any lives lost due to these cuts. That we may be a small ripple in this lake of a province, but will grow in size given time.”

Woychuk said he’s being affected by these cuts on a personal level. “When they, (UCP), decided to pause the cost-of-living index increase for social assistance programs such as AISH, Income Supports, and Seniors Benefits, it affected me as an AISH recipient.” Even though the cost decrease would be $30 per month, Woychuk said that would be nearly $500 less a year, and would negatively affect him as he is already on a very tight budget. “I also have a child who attends school and the uncertainty of school budgets and funding has added a lot of unnecessary anxiety for me in possibly seeing transport fees increase, or lack of supports for my child should they need them going forward in their educational path.”

MLA Armstrong-Homeniuk said she has responded to Woychuk’s requests to have a meeting. Armstrong-Homeniuk said she had previously offered to meet with him on the last day of the session, but that it didn’t work out. She subsequently offered him a meeting in January when her office reopens, but that he wasn’t happy with that. “I went to the minister a week ago and asked her if there was any way she or her office could reach out, and they did.”

In a written statement issued by Kassandra Kitz, Press Secretary for the Ministry of Community and Social Services: “I can confirm Minister Rajan Sawhney had a private conversation with Mr. Woychuk this week. We remain committed to ensuring Albertans with disabilities continue to receive the supports they need and will carefully consider ways to strengthen the services and supports available to them”

Joseph Clark, Principal of the Vegreville Composite High School, said there are around 30 graduates per year from all three sites, (Vegreville, Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park).

Next Step opened in 1997 with the purpose of supporting students of Elk Island Public Schools with alternative program delivery options. According to the mission statement: “We focus on helping students and adults to connect or reconnect with school, create positive personalized learning experiences for all of our students, and assist students in their individual transitions to work, apprenticeship or post-secondary schooling.”

Susan Prestash, who home schools her children, said the school has been a “great fit” for her son Brad Sonnenberg.

Prestash said her son wanted to transition out of the home in order to do community work. Because of the flexible schedule, Pretash said Brad has volunteered with the radio station and worked on a movie set. “Tanyss is an extraordinary teacher,” added Prestash. She also said staff have bonded with her son.

“They (staff) have been very patient with me,” noted Prestash who has had to adjust and let go. “He’s made good friends, and it has been good for me too.”
