Cameron, and Beth Ratte of Irma performed their set of Christmas chamber music for the Holden and area locals, returning for the first time since the Holden Farmer’s Day festival. Listeners enjoyed Christmas medleys, and classics such as We Three Kings and O

Come All Ye Faithful.

The performance was a part of their busy Christmas season performing throughout the area.

RCMP files from December 10 - 16 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser December 10 03:04 – Report of a stolen F350, trailer and skid steer in Mundare. The vehicle was later recovered in Morinville.

13:10 – Complaint of a neighbour smoking marijuana on the adjacent property. The smoke can be smelled in her home. She has tried to contact the neighbour via letter and had received a letter back. Marijuana is legal, therefore this is a Landlord-Tenant Act matter.

14:46 – Report of a fence being cut on an industrial yard over the weekend.

Under investigation.

16:06 – Report of a transport truck rollover. Passers-by had helped the driver from the truck and provided first aid until EMS, Fire and RCMP arrived. Driver was transported to the Vegreville hospital for treatment.

Poor road conditions were the cause for the accident.

December 11 10:55 – Traffic stop resulted in a ticket being issued for cell phone use.

14:00 – While attending court, members recognized a subject who had outstanding warrants from a neighbouring detachment. The subject was arrested.

While being searched after the arrest, a bag of methamphetamine was found in his pocket. Additional charges for possession were laid.

14:16 – Request to attend a local lodging establishment regarding a disturbance between a female and a male.

Upon arrival member spoke with both parties and soon after the female lost consciousness. EMS was called and the female was transported to hospital and treated for a drug overdose. She was placed on life support and then transferred to Edmonton where she recovered the following day.

17:20 – Report of a suspicious vehicle parked at a neighbours house. The house is unoccupied and there is no description of the vehicle or the occupants. Members attended, determined the vehicle was stolen and recovered the vehicle.

17:34 – Report of a break and enter in progress at a local business. Members attended and found a stolen vehicle nearby. A K-9 unit was brought in and patrols were made in the area. The scene has been examined and evidence collected. Still under investigation.

18:46 – Report of damage to a vehicle.

Theft of the vehicle was attempted by punching out the door lock.

Investigation is ongoing.

December 12

08:08 – Report of a suspicious vehicle with a male sleeping inside. Members attended and it was determined that there were no concerns with the vehicle or the occupant.

13:33 – Complaint of a person causing a disturbance in a financial institution in Vegreville because they were refused service. The reporting party did not want to press charges. Members are following up with the subject of the complaint.

13:42 – Report of a break and enter to a rural residence. Three firearms were stolen. Forensic investigators were on site and the investigation is ongoing.

14:31 – One of 7 tickets issued for driving over 30 Km/h in a school zone. *** SLOW DOWN 15:30 – Complaint of a horse running free on the highway. The horse was saddled and the caller was concerned that there may be an injured rider somewhere and that the horse could get hit. The complainant later called back and informed the detachment that the rider was located, who caught the horse and was headed home.

19:53 – Traffic stop conducted. It was determined that the owner did not have registration. Tickets were issued for $310.

December 13

03:38 – Traffic stop conducted near Mundare. Member approached the vehicle and during the stop, the vehicle fled. The license plate was obtained and a neighbouring detachment was informed. The registered owner will be contacted about the matter. The investigation is ongoing.

10:00 – Request to keep the peace.

Members attended while items were moved out of a residence.

11:32 – Report of a motor vehicle collision where the vehicle that caused the accident left the scene without leaving proper contact information. Members made patrols and were able to locate the subject vehicle later that day. The driver admitted to being involved in the accident. The subject was issued a license suspension and tickets. The vehicle was turned over to a family member.

December 14

08:42 – Report of attempted theft of a truck in Vegreville. Minor damage to the truck was found. Still under investigation.

16:36 – Report of a utility trailer stolen from Mundare. Last seen 5 days prior. The investigation is ongoing.

December 15

14:01 – Traffic stop conducted. It was determined that the vehicle had no registration. A voluntary penalty option of $310 was issued.

14:24 – Traffic stop conducted in Mundare. The vehicle fled. Members were able to identify the driver however the vehicle was reported stolen out of Edmonton. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the subject and Vegreville Members arrested him on the 17th and recovered the vehicle. The subject is awaiting remand hearing.

22:34 – Request from the Vegreville hospital to have an unwanted person removed from the emergency room.

Members attended and it was determined that the subject of the complaint had 4 outstanding warrants out of Lloydminster. The subject was arrested on his warrants and held for a hearing.

23:40 – Complaint of an impaired driver. Members located the vehicle in Vegreville and conducted a stop. The driver admitted to drinking and was administered a roadside test which he failed. The driver was then transported to the detachment where he provided a sample and was issued a 72-hour driving suspension and the vehicle was seized.

December 16

10:04 – Complaint regarding a child custody dispute. A visitation order was in place however the complainant indicated that the court order was not being complied with. The order is not police enforceable but members attended and mediated the situation.

17:42 – Complaint of an erratic driver on Hwy 16 headed west. The vehicle had already reached the edge of the Vegreville jurisdiction. No license plate was obtained, but neighbouring detachments were contacted.

18:40 – Report of an SUV traveling at high speeds and then intentionally hitting the brakes. The vehicle was traveling East Hwy 16. The Vehicle could not be located, no plate was obtained and neighbouring detachments were contacted.

19:20 – Call to assist EMS with a possible drug overdose. The subject was treated and taken to hospital by EMS. 21:44 – Complainant reports tools being stolen from his truck. Still under investigation.

During the week there were 60 calls for service made in total including: 6 false alarms, 1 false 911 and 1 animal strike.

Mr. Hill was appointed Acting CAO after the resignation of Mr. Singleton in August of this year. His management of Lamont County operations since that time has been a great benefit to the County, and Lamont County Council is confident is his leadership going forward.

Mr. Hill became Director of Planning & Development & Community Services in 2015, hav-

ing previously worked at Opus Stewart Weir, where he was involved in the management of the municipal engineering department. He also worked for several years in the Planning & Development Department at Sturgeon County. As CAO, Mr. Hill will continue to work alongside Council to ensure the growth and development of Lamont County in the future.

Our PM has spoken many times about equality for women and is a self-proclaimed feminist. He can Tweet a message offering up $50 million of our dollars to a celebrity fundraiser, but will he find a way to make this right?

Before anyone accuses me of playing politics, let me remind you that this has been going on for over 10 years now, so clearly the problem is not a Liberal one, but a bipartisan one. Politicians of many stripes can ignore our military.

As of Monday morning, a GoFundMe fundraiser had raised $13,560 to pay Captain Fawcett’s prosthetic leg expenses.

We as Canadians should be outraged. Our government chose to pay Omar Khadr $10 million because they felt it was the right thing to do and Veteran’s affairs pays for PTSD treatment for convicted murderer Christopher Garnier (who never served a single day in our military), yet they cannot find $35,000 for a loyal member of our military who has done nothing less than serve our country.

After the public outcry that resulted from the original Global News story with Mercedes Stephenson, and related news coverage from other media outlets, the Canadian Armed Forces indicated that they would immediately sit down with Captain Fawcett. Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan also says he is looking into the file and a veteran’s charity is offering to pay some of her bills. It is a shame it must come to this for those in power to do the right thing.

The High Price of Service Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser - Opinion Recently, journalist and military analyst Mercedes Stephenson brought to light the story of Air Force Captain Kimberly Fawcett. While I cannot do the entire story in limited space, I will attempt to paint the picture the best I can.

Captain Fawcett and her husband Curtis were members of high readiness units in the Canadian Armed Forces. This meant that they could be deployed overseas on short notice at any time. Fawcett deployed twice to Afghanistan on behalf of Canada On the morning of February 21, 2006, Curtis Fawcett was called to the base to prepare for deployment to Africa and Kimberly Fawcett’s unit was next in the queue for deployment.

As planned, Fawcett initiated the Family Care Plan that was in place. This plan involved taking her nine-month-old son Keiran to his grandparents’ house. Soon after entering onto highway 401, Fawcett lost control of her vehicle on the icy road and landed in the median. Quickly evaluating the situation, she realized that due to her vehicle being partly still on the roadway, she and her child were still in danger.

In a decision that would forever change her life, Captain Fawcett proceeded to take Keiran from his car seat and retreat to the safety of the ditch. Once there, the unthinkable happened.

A truck, on the same icy road, clipped a semi, losing control and entered the ditch, striking Fawcett and Keiran. The impact was on Fawcett’s right leg, dragging her under the speeding truck and tearing it off at the hip. Tiny Keiran flew from his mother’s arms during the impact and into the path of an 18 wheeler. He was killed instantly.

After waking from a coma in ICU, arrangements were made to bring Keiran to his mother’s bedside in his casket to say goodbye.

Following rehabilitation and a learning to walk again with her prosthetic leg, Fawcett competed in sporting events and the Invictus Games. She also decided to return to work and ultimately chose to return to active duty to Afghanistan.

Now, over 10 years later, she is still fighting. Not only for our country but AGAINST it. She is fighting to have the cost of her prosthetic leg ($34,151.15).

Despite the investigation by the military finding that she WAS on duty from the time she left her home that morning, she is being denied benefits.

The report read: (she was) “’going about a matter related (directly) to service in the Canadian Forces’ (Ref E para 29) in that both travel to her son’s daycare and then to the base were required activities to enable her to perform her military

Structure Complete for New Maddigan Chrysler Dealership terrible weather this fall, Gegolick says that construction has caught up as much as they can to their schedule, and will be able to continue construction throughout the winter.

“It was probably the worst weather we could have had at that stage of construction,” said Gegolick, “I would say we lost about a month and a half of work, but all we can do now is continue on as planned. Provided we don’t have any more bad weather, we expect the building will be up and fully enclosed by the end of January.”

So far, they have leveled the area, set foundation into the ground, and set up all amenities.

The deadline for the dealership to be ready to move into is set for the end of 2019.

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser Vegreville construction company Vantage Builders has finished the main structure of the new Maddigan Chrysler dealership this past week, and passerby can see a vague glimpse of what the corner of 16A and 60th St (Hwy 857) will look like once the project is complete.

Once hired by Maddigan ChryslerJeep-Dodge to begin construction at the beginning of August of this year, Vantage builders hired an architect to design the building and parking area.

“We do our own designing as much as we can, but weren’t able to add this one to our workload at the time,” said Walter Gegolick, owner of Vantage Builders and Vantage Building Supplies. “We do like to hire locally as much as we can to support our community, so the architect we hired was as close as we could get.”

The building will enjoy the newest in green amenities (power, plumbing, heating), a service bay and lube station, and the convenience of a more central location within the town. Ryan Maddigan, the owner of the Maddigan Chrysler dealership, says that he hopes that the location will be beneficial for both the town and the dealership.

“Out-of-town customers might shop at neighbouring businesses, and maybe being visible within the town will bring more customers in our doors as well,” says Maddigan. “I think it will work well for everyone.”

Gegolick expressed his confidence in the design for the new building, “I think Maddigan will find it a lot more

functional, and a lot more modern.”

The new dealership will be more than just a move across town for Maddigan Chrysler.

After leasing their current site for the past 7 years, Ryan Maddigan says that they are excited to grow into a location that they own.

90 Years Ago – December 19, 1928

Barclay’s Bank of London, England, announces that a charter has been applied for in Canada and that it expects to open offices in this country when incorporated here. This bank is one of the five largest in Great Britain and its entrance into the Canadian field of finance is regarded as an initial effort on the part of the moneyed interests of Great Britain to participate actively in Canadian financial matters.

Considerable repairs and adjustments have been made in the United Church during the past week. Two new gas stoves have been added and the entrance fitted up with a stove and light. The windows also have been tightened up for the coming cold weather.

A new booklet dealing with the noxious week situation in Alberta entitled “Alberta’s Weed Problem, No. 3” is in course of preparation

by Field Crops Commissioner, W.J. Stephen, and will be ready for distribution through the Department of Agriculture early in the new year. Copies of this publication may be secured by farmers, municipal officials and other persons interested in the control and eradication of noxious weeds by communicating with Mr. Stephen’s office.

75 Years Ago – December 22, 1943

The U.S. War Production Board has increased the total tonnage of farm machinery permitted to be exported to Canada – Canadian wheat and flax exports this August totalled 27,707,135 bushels, the largest August shipment in five years – Argentina’s wheat crop is estimated by Broomhall at 257,180,000 bushels higher than last year’s crop.

Corp. Doug Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Campbell of Warwick, is in the hospital overseas as a result of a head-on collision between a motor bike and a lorry. Doug was piloting the motor bike when the accident occurred. This was on November 10th, and he has been in hospital there ever since with a fractured leg and other injuries.

Milo Ferguson announces that he has sold his truck and is therefore out of the freighting business.

Defence headquarters said allowances to dependants of soldiers are not stopped for “crimes” or misdemeanors by the soldiers, except when the soldier’s pay is stopped because he is absent without leave for more than 21 days.

Expressing belief that the end of the war is now in sight, Lt.-Col. Anthony Marlow, Conservative MP for Brighton, said that when the Soviet army marches into Germany an English-speaking army would meet it halfway.

50 Years Ago – December 19, 1968

Fire of undetermined origin completely gutted a bedroom of the J. Dobush home about 7:00 p.m. Monday night. The fire was contained primarily to the bedroom where it started but burned through the door and of course the heat charred paint in the hallway.

Western Hardware in Vegreville was broken into on Saturday night by person or persons who stole at least eight wrist watches and six transistor radios. Entry was made by smashing the glass front door of the building and the goods taken were enclosed in a showcase about half-way down the store. The robbery was noticed by manager Wes Hughston about 10 o’clock Sunday morning.

Alberta Gas Trunk Line Company Limited has selected Vegreville as the site for its sub-district offices it was learned by the Observer, Tuesday. A representative of the company, R.H. (Harold) Coleman of Calgary, who is right-of-way inspector, informed that the new line being constructed from Boyle to Consort will begin on the 2nd or 3rd of January. In addition to five or six houses that will be constructed Alberta Gas Trunk Line will erect a warehouse and maintenance shops in which an office will be situated.

25 Years Ago – December 21, 1993

The town is looking for $125,000 in provincial grants to help fix vaporization problems at the aquatic centre. The brick walls of the Aquatic and Fitness Centre require a liner to prevent vapors from permeating through the brick. The vaporization increases the walls rate of deterioration and could “significantly shorten the life of the building,” explained town manager Richard Binnendyk.

Lifetime volunteers were recognized at St. Joseph’s Hospital’s recognition night last Saturday. Peggy Tetreau, Helen Stachow, Betty Hantiuk, Sophie Dziwenka, Elsie Mudryk were among those honored. Not present at the ceremony were Marion Baxandall, Olga Petruk and Joyce Ziegler. The same evening employees of St. Joseph’s Hospital were awarded for their years of service and are as follows: Eugene Rudyk (15), Kyu-Ho-Ha (25), Sophie Lemiski (15), Alma Wilcox (15), Joan Douglas (10) and Lorne Hughes (10).

“Tough decisions need to be made and it’s time for the Alberta government to stop its runaway spending,” said Franco Terrazzano, Alberta Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “If we keep heading down the same path, Albertans will owe hundreds of billions of dollars in government debt. We can’t keep kicking the bill to future generations.”

The report projects Alberta’s government debt to exceed $100 billion by 2021 and $1 trillion by 2051. The average Albertan already owes more than $10,000 in provincial debt.

“It’s one thing for a government to say it’s going to tighten its belt, it’s another thing to make tough decisions and cut spending,” said Terrazzano.

“The government talks about tightening its belt and yet is considering spending money to host the Olympics.

The Olympics should not be a priority, especially in light of these numbers.”

Spending has been a bi-partisan prob-

lem in Alberta for years. Between 2004 and 2015, the Alberta government’s program spending increased by nearly 100 percent, roughly double the combined rates of inflation plus population growth. Alberta’s current government has continued to make matters worse by failing to get spending under control.

Alberta spends $3,175 per person more than the average per person spending in BC, Ontario, and Quebec. If Alberta could even cut that number in half, it would save $6.6 billion.

“Spending needs to be cut, prioritization needs to happen and fat needs to be trimmed,” said Terrazzano. “The Canadian Taxpayers Federation is calling on the Alberta government to avoid a fiscal nightmare by getting spending under control.”

Two-Vehicle Collision on 16A in Vegreville

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser At approximately 2 pm on Tuesday, December 18, traffic on Hwy 16A (50th Ave) in Vegreville was brought to a screeching halt by a two-vehicle collision.

Both vehicles suffered considerable damage, with one driver being taken into St. Joseph’s Hospital with some minor injuries.

Vegreville Fire Chief Phil Row said that firefighters were redirecting traffic for around an hour and a half, while the scene was investigated and cleared.

One light post suffered some damage in the accident, so Emergency Services would like to inform the public that the crosswalk at the intersection of 50th Ave and 51st Street will be out of service until the pole is replaced.

No official statement regarding the cause of the collision will be made by Emergency Services at this time, as it is still under investigation by the RCMP.

The Village of Ryley Lights up the Night who did join in went all-out with festive flair, sometimes filling their entire yard with lights and standing decorations, depicting both traditional Nativity scenes and the “Santa is Coming to Town” themes.

The winners of the contest are to be announced next week, and the Village has expressed their appreciation of all those in Ryley who helped spread some “Joy to the World,” with their creative decorations.

Starting with a Festival of Trees on the first, and followed by community efforts such as Stuff a Bus campaign and Christmas Hampers, the final piece of the Christmas spirit puzzle was added on Thursday, December 13, with a village-wide light up for a prize.

Both residences and businesses participated in the event, with cash awards given to first-third place winners in the categories: Outdoors Residence and Outdoors/ Inside Window Business.

Village councilors trekked through the town at seven o’clock that evening to determine who’s lights were shining brightest, and which festive decorations would win First ($250), Second ($200), and Third ($150) prize in their respective categories.

Tumble in the Snow Lori Thickson Life’s Little Moments My farm is on a quiet country road, out in the middle of nowhere. The birds and coyotes are as much a part of our lives as the cows and chickens.

My family and I moved out here to be away from the city, out in nature, and it was the best thing we ever did.

During the first snowfall of the season a couple months ago I decided to go and get the mail. Our box is at the end of our driveway like it is with most folks. Now you’ve got to know, my knees are bad. My back isn’t any good either. Walking at all is a chore, not to mention that it’s cold and slippery out. This was a major undertaking for me!

When I set out across the front yard, I knew right away it wouldn’t end well. The snow went just over my ankles. Crusty on top, flaky underneath. And oh so cold! I could be cold in 90-degree weather, so it may not have been that bad, but it was cold and windy. I got to the driveway and started to inch my way towards the end. A skating rink stretched before me. Oh crap! After what seemed like hours, but was probably only about 15 minutes or so, I made it to the mailbox in one piece.

Several slips and slides (and clean underwear would be needed!) but unharmed. I opened the box, got my stuff, and started back home.

Now our neighbour’s dog has kind of adopted us too. I love her as much as I do my own boy. She is

the sweetest big ball of white fur you could ever meet. She surprised me the day before by coming flying around the corner of our house, chasing our Opee. White dog, snow, you get the picture. I honestly thought my dog had lost his marbles for a second. As I’m ever-so-slowly creeping down my ice-sheet driveway, this is running through my mind and I’m chuckling to myself at the memory. I made it to the curve by our garage and started to climb the tiny little hump into the front yard.

All of a sudden, out of absolutely nowhere, a white snowball came barrelling towards me. IT WAS HUGE! As my brain was trying to figure out what I was seeing, another part is groaning, “This is gonna hurt!”

I started to twist and BAM, she hit! As I started to fall, I felt the kisses start on my face and I started to laugh! I landed on my right hip on the softest furry pillow ever! There was a little “Wuuff” and then the wiggling and yipping started.

“You seriously cannot want to play right now,” I think, watching her excited antics. As I lay there laughing my fool head off and dodging puppy washing, it occurred to me that my butt was getting wet. I crawled back to our porch, where I pulled myself up on one of the lawn chairs. I made it back into the house and immediately went and put the kettle on and changed my clothes. My poor tushy was so very grateful for clean, dry, soft pj’s!

Moisture Situation Update as of December 10, 2018 Agri-News Alberta Agriculture and Forestry Ralph Wright, manager of the agro-meteorological applications and modelling section with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry, analyzes the data.

“Alberta weather has been relatively mild with near normal snowfall packs developing across most of the province (see map 1),” says Wright. “Areas with above normal snowfall accumulations are generally confined to lands north of the Yellowhead Highway, with one in six-year highs found through a large expanse extending from High Prairie eastward towards Lac La Biche. In contrast, snowfall accumulations are below normal across much of the northern Peace Region and throughout the foothills between Edson and the U.S. border.”

Wright says that with the warmer weather of late, most areas south of Calgary are becoming snow free (see map 2).

“Within the agricultural areas, the deepest snowpacks can be found around High Prairie, where more than 70 mm of water is estimated to be residing. It is equivalent to more moisture than what is normally received during an average May, or approximately 50 mm.”

Looking back at the past two years, cumulative precipitation deficits are highly variable across the province with many agricultural areas receiving below the long term normal (see map 3). The greatest deficits - at least one in 12-year lows - can be found across many lands ranging from Red Deer to the U.S. border and across much of the north half of the Peace Region. Larger deficits - at least one in 25-year lows

- are found in through the Calgary area, along a wide band that stretches down through to the extreme south east corner of the province. Similarly, most of the north half of the Peace Region is dry with several lands experiencing at least once in 12-year lows.”

“Since crop growth is highly dependent on the reception of timely in-season moisture, long term deficits are not likely to reflect annual crop growth potential. Instead, they may highlight those areas that have diminished local surface water supplies and impact the vigor of perennial crops and native vegetation. Currently, these areas are more vulnerable if much drier than normal conditions prevail over the coming growing season.”

The map shows most of Lamont and Two Hills Counties at near-normal levels, with some moderately low areas in the south.

Beaver County reads as moderately low with a low-moisture patch to the west, and the County of Minburn has been classified with both low and very low moisture over the past two years.

Saint Mary’s Senior Boys Take Gold in Breton St Mary’s School Submitted St. Mary’s Senior Boys Basketball Team won gold at the Breton High School Invitational Tournament held December 14th & 15th. They started the tournament Friday by defeating St Francis of Assisi from Slave Lake.

On Saturday, they defeated New Norway and then closed the tournament by defeating Breton in front of their home crowd for the gold-medal game

Two Hills RCMP Investigate Fatal Collision

Corporal Ronald Bumbry Eastern Alberta District – Media Relations Officer Two Hills, Alta. – On Dec. 6, 2018, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Two Hills RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 36 just south of Two Hills.

A truck with a lone male occupant was driving north on Highway 36 when a collision occurred with a southbound SUV with three adult occupants.

The occupants of all vehicles were taken to hospital with various injuries.

Tragically, on Dec. 11, 2018, a 75-year-old female occupant of the SUV died as a result of her injuries.

Two Hills RCMP continue to investigate the collision.

Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this time. The name of the deceased will not be released.

Saint Mary’s Saints Claim Silver

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser At this weekend’s Jr. Girls basketball tournament hosted in the St. Mary’s School gym, the saints fought nobly for that glittering gold, only to claim the silver medal after they lost to Hanna by 12 points in the championship game with a final score of 71-59.

The Saints advanced to the final game of the tournament by defeating Cold Lake 64-49 in the semi-final game.

This is the second tournament in a row that the Saints finished in second place.

On December 8, St. Mary’s lost to the tournament’s host team, St. Paul Regional, to claim the silver medal position.

The team expressed their appreciation for the fans, officials, and sponsor for supporting the home tournament weekend from December 14 to 15.

Kathleen Margaret “Kay” Mckenzie (Nee Dwyer) February 22, 1927- November 26, 2018 Our beloved matriarch, Kay, has moved on to join her predeceased husband, Bob McKenzie. Born in Vermilion, Alberta to Edward and Hilda Dwyer, Kay’s mother died with her birth. She is also predeceased by her father, and siblings William, Jack, Edith and Ronnie.

Growing up motherless in her first few years of life, we believe, instilled the fortitude, survivability and determination to grasp life and make herself and the world around her the best it could be. This strength carried Kay during her entire life. Through volunteerism and service, she accomplished much more than an average citizen could possibly imagine. As a youth, Kay was charged with much of the care of her handicapped sister and younger brothers. She excelled at sports. She was asked to play semi-pro women’s fastball as a young woman. Throughout her adult life, she was consistently vying for the championships in curling and golf, and was very active in promoting and developing those sports. Kay’s booming voice was a constant at the Labour Day men’s golf tournament, as she insured each flight went out on time.

In 1952, Kay married the love of her life, Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ McKenzie, and moved to Vegreville where she helped him grow his practice of Chiropractic. Once she adopted Vegreville, she set about doing all she could to enhance the lives of everyone in that community. Kay’s temerity brought her to a leadership role in nearly every organization or project she committed to. It would be impossible to list all of Kay’s accomplishments here, but some of them are as follows: Kay was elected to town council in Vegreville from 1970 to 1989 (excluding 1980-83). She was the first female mayor of Vegreville from 1989-to 1994. She was best known for the Vegreville Pysanka (Ukrainian Easter Egg), a project of the Chamber of Commerce led by Kay to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the RCMP in Alberta. Other community achievements include the Vegreville Water Corridor, Recreation Centre, new Health Unit, new multipurpose complex, and the revitalization of the downtown core. She was a member of the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association, a director of the Vegreville Cultural Association, member of the Board of Governors of Lakeland College, Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary, chair of the National Fundraising Committee of the Canadian Cancer Society, and a director of the Alberta Cancer Hospital Board. In 1991,Kay was presented the Volunteer Merit Award of Canada by Deputy Prime Minister Don Mazankowski, who once said, “If you want to get a job done, call Kay!” Kay also managed to raise five children! By her example, Kay inspired in her children a curiosity in all things cultural, natural, societal, musical, and geographical. We all loved our family outings and vacations to explore something new. Kay also loved hosting gatherings of family and friends, and would cook and serve wonderful meals to share on all special occasions. Kay was often the first to step in to help anyone in need or crisis. Her example moved all of her children to choose careers serving others.

When Bob and Kay retired to Sooke, BC, Kay immediately jumped into membership with the local Rotary Club and Lions Club. She remained active in these clubs until the last few years of her life. She was approached a few times to run for mayor of Sooke, but politely declined.

Kay will be missed, and her spirit and inspiration will carry on in those who survive her: Her brother Ed (Lynn) Dwyer; Children Kim, Kevin, Robynne (John) Murray, Rae, and Kirk; Grandchildren Kelty (Mark) Pieper, Nicolene, Ayla (Auren) Challenger, Erin, Adley and Kiersay; Great grandchildren Lumi and Ocea .

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held in the spring of 2019.

The chosen charity also gets to host the next event. Hence, KidSport Vegreville was the recipients who were voted for in the June 2018’s 100 People Who Care. So, they were the organizers of the December 5’s Seventh Bi-Annual

Representative from KidSport Vegreville, Jerrold Lemko was the emcee. The three charities who had to convince the crowd to vote for them were CALS, Vegreville Regional Museum, and Vegreville Fire Department.

Representative for CALS Breakfast Club, Heather Giebelhaus said the breakfast club has been providing snacks to between 600 to 700 students attending Vegreville’s elementary schools and the Vegreville Next Step Outreach program for over 20 years. This is a universally assessable program. There is no charge to any family to have their child participate in this program. This program doesn’t receive direct government funding and is funded solely by donations, grants, and community fundraising efforts. With a noticeable decrease this year in cooperative grant funding, they could really use these funds.

Fire Chief, Phil Rowe said Vegreville Fire Department Club is a non-profit part of Vegreville Fire Department which has raised money for many charitable causes.

Now, they designed a full-functioned training facility that will go behind the fire hall. This facility will encompass every skill that a firefighter will ever need to train. They are also building a comprehensive (CISM) Plan which is Critical Incident Stress Management.

They are sending firefighters to get training to recognize this and tell firefighters who to go to if they have a problem.

If Vegreville Fire Department is selected, the funds will go towards these two programs.

Attendees voted after this and the chosen charity was CALS Breakfast Club who was the recipients of $3300.

Executive Director for CALS, Dee Palichuk and Representative for CALS Breakfast Club Heather Giebelhaus said to be the recipients of these funds is a real honor. CALS will be hosting the next event in around six months from now.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Kids can become friends with their food! Goodbye Mealtime Struggles Workshop at Parent Link Centre on November 26 offered strategies to manage mealtime struggles.

This interactive workshop was presented by Registered Dietitian Delone Abercrombie and Occupational Therapist Neila Nelsen who welcomed questions and had discussion periods.

They stated the most significant way to get your child to eat is to build the child’s trust. The best way to do this is to offer a variety of nutritious foods and let them decide how much they want to eat and let it go if they don’t want to eat.

Children usually have a way of getting the nutrition they need.

We all have differences in food preference. A child’s eating habits and mealtime behavior are affected by the parent’s choices.

Nelsen said to make sure kids are developmentally ready to eat the food and that they feel supported when sitting in order to focus on eating. The five developmental stages of feeding are sight, smell, touch, taste, chew and enjoy. Don’t worry if your child becomes set on one of these because it is the first step to trying new foods.

Abercrombie said children need more nutrition because their stomachs are smaller and they ate less. If you break the food down to smaller portions and

serve a variety of foods, kids are getting the nutrition they need. Check a Canada’s Food Guide to find out what children need.

Children shouldn’t drink too much milk or juice and this should be offered at the end of the meal because it can fill children up.

If you want to help your child discover new foods, offer them when they are relaxed and happy, involve them in picking out and preparing the food, enjoy the food together as a family, pair with food the child already likes, and present them in a fun and interesting way.

It’s wise to focus on the positive. Look at what your child is eating instead of what they aren’t eating. Your child is getting enough nutrients if their growth pattern is consistent, they are generally free of sickness, and they are happy and active.

Abercrombie added to plan transitional activities before mealtime and develop routines as this makes it easier for meals because everything usually goes smoothly then.

It’s wise to create a calm, inviting and positive environment free from distractions for mealtime success.

It’s all about attachment, trust, and cooperation. Connect with your child, follow the child’s cues, and watch and respond warmly during mealtimes.

Vegreville Rangers Try to Build on Winning Game Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser On Saturday, December 8, the Vegreville Rangers broke their 16-game losing streak with a 2-1 shootout win against the Cold Lake Ice. Free of their loop of loss after loss, the Rangers enjoyed their win and aimed to make it last with back-to-back games against the Vermilion Tigers on Friday, December 14, and the Saint Paul Canadiens on Saturday, December 15.

While both games were losses, (0-6 against the Tigers and 8-1 against the Canadiens) the Rangers will have the opportunity to play two more games to close out the rest of the 2018 portion of the regular season.

Trailing 9 points behind the Vermilion

Tigers 2 points to the Tigers’ 11, Vegreville’s boys in blue have a total of 13 games to catch up and earn a spot in the 2019 playoff season.

The Rangers’ upcoming games are against the Wainwright Bisons, who currently sit in second place overall in the North Eastern Alberta Hockey League, and the Saint Paul Canadiens, who are in 5th place with 23 points.

Having scratched the big, fat zero off of their season scoreboard, the Vegreville Rangers have turned their efforts into stacking win upon win. Though their win was immediately followed by two losses, one small taste of victory was all the Rangers needed to look forward with a touch of optimism for the remainder of the regular season.

Altogether around 460 members working in Health Care, Administration, Housekeeping, Highway Maintenance, ATB, Alberta Innovates, the Sheriff’s Department and more, work hard all year to provide services to their local communities. The local Chapter is a small part of the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees which has a membership of over 90,000 throughout Alberta.

To that end, they have again donated $250 to each of the six local food banks distributed around our region, for a total of $1,500, and wish all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’.

An Old-Fashioned Christmas Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Vegreville Centennial Library was the hub for traditional Christmas delights when they partnered with Vegreville and Area Parent Link Centre to host an Old-Fashioned Christmas on December 8 at the library.

Everyone was treated to a free breakfast when they entered. After this, there were tables full of Christmas activities to do which helped children’s fine motor development. These included writing letters to Santa with their parents’ help which they could put in the mail box right in the library, coloring sheets, a table where they could make their own candy cane ornament out of pipe cleaners, section where they could decorate bags for the candy cane hunt, and a cookie decorating table.

To develop the children’s gross motor skills and use up the children’s excess energy from all this fun, there was gross motor play with big mats where

children engaged in free and creative play together.

Half-way in the event, the children were really surprised and happy to see Santa make his appearance.

In the library, the children went on a candy cane hunt which led to story time.

This event was totally free. There was also Christmas caroling and plenty of sharing, love, and togetherness among family, friends, and acquaintances.

Debra Fedoruk Submitted The residents at Vegreville Manor were delighted with two Christmas recitals on December 7 and 8. The performers were students from Debbie Fedoruk’s Music Studio. There was a variety of Christmas music, both traditional and modern, religious and secular. There were piano duets, vocal duets, and piano and vocal solos. Debbie did most of the accompanying, but some students accompanied themselves, and a couple of students even accompanied a sibling. All of the students showed they had the ability to make beautiful music and entertain an audience.

Christmas Concert Aces in Originality Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent A.L. Horton School- December 13’s Christmas Concert reached heights in creativity and originality which were taller than any Christmas tree.

eration and effort from the staff at the school and the students who give the gift of music.

After this, the entire student school body entered the stage. The concert started with the students saying some children were heading home from Vegreville Christmas Light-Up when they heard some Christmas bells. This was followed by the students singing a high-spirited song which was full of harmony about Merry Christmas bells.

The Christmas bell appeared then where she led everyone through a journey of the festive and spiritual parts of Christmas.

Humor laced the next song where the children sang that they wanted snow but their mothers were dreaming of a brown Christmas.

The students sang an Inuit song by Susan Agiukart next where they used many expressions of joy during this performance.

This concert also featured a group of caroling singing two favorite Ukrainian Christmas carols, a nativity scene, a song about snow falling down, and the finale was a song where the students were pondering what Christmas is all about and they discovered to create a happy world, people should practice the sentiment of treating others the way they want to be treated.

Each of these performances received cheers, whistles, and a continuous applause from the audience.

Good will was also a part of this concert, as Assistant Principal; Mr. Arndt announced the seat raffle raised $700 for Vegreville Breakfast Club.

Some people in Denmark give and receive extra Advent presents on the four Sundays of Advent.

Different types of Advent candles and calendars are popular in Denmark. A Kalenderlys (calendarcandle) is an Advent candle and most people have one of these types of candles. A Pakkekalender (gift calendar) is also a fun way to countdown to Christmas Eve. There are 24 small gifts for the children in the calendar, one for each day until Christmas Eve. Julekalender (christmas calendar) is a television series with 24 episodes.

One episode is shown each day in December with the last one being aired on Christmas Eve. The first Julekalender was shown on TV in Denmark in 1962. The two main Danish TV channels DR and TV2 both show different versions of Julekalender each year. The theme of the stories in the Julekalender normally follow a similar storyline, with someone trying to ruin Christmas and the main characters saving Christmas!

As well as the TV series, both DR and TV2 produce paper advent calendars to go along with the stories!

DR is the oldest TV channel in Denmark and it’s paper calendar is called Børnenes U-landskalender (Children’s U-Country Calendar). It’s been making the calendars for over 50 years and profits from the sale of the calendar go to help poor children in a developing country. The calendar made by TV2 is called julekalender and profits from that calendar go to help Julemærkefonden, a children’s charity in Denmark.

In Georgia, Christmas is celebrated on the 7th January. This is because the Georgian Orthodox Church (like the Orthodox Churches in Russia, Ethiopia and other countries) use the old ‘Julian’ calendar for their festivals.

On Christmas Day, many people will go on a ‘Alilo’, a parade in the streets. They are dressed in special cloths and costumes to celebrate Christmas. Some people carry Georgian flags and others might be dressed as people from the Christmas story. Children like taking part in the Alilo as they’re often given sweets!

Carols are sung and they vary across the country. Many of the songs and carols sung during the Alilo include these words: “ოცდახუთსა დეკემბერსა, ქრისტე იშვა ბეთლემსაო’” (otsdakhutsa dekembersa qriste ishva betlemsao) which means “on 25th December Christ was born in Bethlehem”.

In Georgian Happy/Merry Christmas is ‘გილოცავ შობა-ახალ წელს’ (gilocav shoba-akhal c’els). Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages.

The traditional Georgian Christmas Tree is called a ‘Chichilaki’ (ჩიჩილაკი). It’s made of dried wood, such as hazelnut or walnut branches, which are shaved into long curly strips to form a small tree. Some people say they look like the long white curly beard of St Basil the Great! They are decorated with small fruits and sweets. They are traditionally burnt on the day before the Georgian Orthodox Epiphany (19th January).

This is meant to mark the end of the year’s troubles. ‘Western’ Christmas Tree (nadzvis khe) are also popular.

People in Ghana celebrate Christmas from the 20th of December to the first week in January with lots of different activities. Many people travel to visit their relatives and friends in other parts of the country. Over 66 languages are spoken in Ghana and all these language groups have their own traditions and customs!

December is also the start of the cocoa harvest (the bean that make chocolate) in Ghana. Ghana is the worlds second biggest cocoa producer.

I really like some fair-trade chocolate that’s made with cocoa from Ghana!

Christmas Eve night is the time when the celebrations really start with Church services that have drumming and dancing. Children often put on a Nativity Play or other drama. Then choirs come out to sing and people come out in front of the priests to dance. Songs are mostly sang in the languages that the people understand best. This makes them feels that God speaks their language. Sometimes these services and dancing go on all night long!

Other people celebrate Christmas Eve with fireworks and parties.

On Christmas day the Churches are very full. People come out dressed in their colorful traditional clothes.

After the Church service on Christmas morning, people quickly go back to their houses to sTraditional food includes stew or okra soup, porridge and meats, rice and a yam paste called ‘fufu’.

During the Christmas period children’s parties, employees’ end of year parties, etc. are mostly celebrated in the hotels, at the beaches, school parks and community centers with good wishes for all people on earth.

• Christmas in Canada has many different customs and traditions because of the country’s diverse population. Most people celebrate on December 25th.

• The Santa Claus parade has been held every Christmas in Toronto since 1905. Almost 1,800 people take part in the parade, and about 500,000 people line the parade route.

• Every Christmas, homes in Labrador City in Newfoundland have a Christmas lights competition.

Homeowners also try to outdo each other with huge ice sculptures and light displays in their gardens.

• Also popular is the festival of lights at Niagara Falls. The waterfalls are decorated with over 2 million lights, and visitors can also enjoy concerts and fireworks over the falls.

• Turkey or ham is the traditional Christmas meal for most English speaking Canadians. Other popular seasonal foods include mince pies, plum pudding and a rich Christmas fruit cake.

• Attending midnight mass is customary among French speaking Canadians, as well as attending feasts on Christmas Eve. A stew made from pigs’ feet is a traditional Christmas meal in parts of Quebec.

• Every year, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia gives a Christmas tree to the US city of Boston. The tree is in appreciation for help given by Boston residents after a ship exploded in Halifax in 1917.

• Mummering is a popular tradition at Christmas in Canada, in parts of Newfoundland. Children go from door to door, sing and dance, and are given snacks and a drink.

As in The Netherlands, children in Belgium believe that ‘Sinterklaas/St. Niklaas’ (Flemish) or ‘Saint Nicholas’ (Walloon) brings them presents on December 6th, St. Nicholas’ Day. Children put their shoes in front of the fireplace, together some for Sinterklaas like a drawing or biscuits; they might also leave a carrot for Sinterklass’s horse and something for Zwarte Piet (Black Peter, Sinterklass’s assistant). Then in the night, Sinterklaas arrives on the roof on his horse with Zwarte Piet. Zwarte Piet climbs down the chimney and leaves the presents in and around the shoes.

Sinterklaas has a book in which he keeps all the names of the children and tells if they’ve been bad or good.

Children are told that if they’ve been bad, Zwarte Piet will put you in his sack and take you back to Spain!

Traditional foods that are left for Sinterklaas include tangerines, gingerbread, chocolate and ‘mokjes’ (cookies made in the shapes of letters.

There are lots of songs that children sing about Sinterklaas. Different regions of Belgium have different customs and traditions about St. Nicholas.

The visit of Sinkerlass is a separate occasion than Christmas. Christmas is a more religious festival.

In Belgium there are three official languages, Dutch (a Belgium version of Dutch is known as Flemish, this is mainly spoken in the northern area of Belgium called Flanders), French (mainly spoken in the southern Walloon Region) and German (spoken by about 1% of Belgiums in the east of the country).

In France, a Nativity crib is often used to help decorate the house.

French cribs have clay figures in them. During December some towns and cities, such as Marseilles, have fairs that sell Nativity figures. As well as having the normal Nativity figures in them, French scenes also have figures such as a Butcher, a Baker, a Policeman and a Priest.

In French Happy/Merry Christmas is ‘Joyeux Noël’. In Breton (spoken by some people in Brittany, Northern France) it’s ‘Nedeleg Laouen’ and in Corsican it’s ‘Bon Natale’. Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages.

Yule Logs made out of Cherry Wood are often burned in French homes. The log is carried into the home on Christmas Eve and is sprinkled with red wine to make the log smell nice when it is burning.

There is a custom that the log and candles are left burning all night with some food and drinks left out in case Mary and the baby Jesus come past during the night.

In France, Father Christmas / Santa Claus / St. Nicholas is called Père Noël (Father Christmas). In eastern France he is accompanied by Le Pere Fouettard, a man dressed in black. He might be the same person as Zwarte Piet in The Netherlands. made from different types of Fruit, Nuts and Pastries.

Epiphany, called Fête des Rois in French, is also celebrated in France on January 6th. A flat Almond cake is eaten called ‘Galette des Rois’. The cake has a toy crown inside and is decorated on top with a gold paper crown.

Christmas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is more of a religious festival than being commercial. Most people won’t have any presents.

Christmas Eve is very important with Churches having big musical evenings (many churches have at least 5 or 6 choirs) and a nativity play. These plays last a very long time. They start at the beginning of the evening with the creation and the Garden of Eden and end with the story of King Herod killing the baby boys.

People taking part in the play really like to show off their ‘best’ acting skills and tend to go over the top and ‘ham it up’! King Herod and the soldiers are often figures of fun (like pantomime ‘baddies’) and Mary is often well advanced in labor before she arrives!

The birth of Jesus is timed to happen as close to midnight as possible and after that come the shepherds, the wise men and the slaughter of the innocents. This means the play normally finishes about 1am.

However, in some places there will be further singing until dawn! The Christmas day service then starts at 9am with lots more singing.

On Christmas day, most families try to have a better meal than usual.

If they can afford it, they will have some meat (normally chicken or pork). The rest of the day is spent quite quietly, maybe sleeping after a busy and late night on Christmas Eve! People go back to work on the 26th (Boxing Day).

In the Lingala language, which is spoken in the DRC and some other African countries, Happy/Merry Christmas is ‘Mbotama Malamu’.

In Bulgaria, Christmas is celebrated on December 25th. Many countries in Eastern Europe celebrate Christmas on January 7th as most Orthodox Churches use the old Julian Calendar, but the Bulgarian Orthodox Church uses the Gregorian calendar Christmas in on the 25th December.

For many Bulgarians, the preparations for Christmas start with Advent which lasts 40 days in the Orthodox Church and starts on November 15th.

One legend in Bulgaria is that Mary started her labor on ‘Ignazhden’, December 20th (Saint Ignatius of Antioch’s Day) and she gave birth of Christmas Eve but the birth of Jesus wasn’t announced until Christmas

Day. The 20th is also the traditional ‘new year’ in Bulgarian culture. It’s traditional to eat a special ring shaped caked called ‘kolaks’ on this day.

Christmas Eve (called ‘Badni Veche’) is a very important day and the main Christmas meal is eaten in the evening of Christmas Eve. The meal should traditionally have an odd number of dishes in it (normally 7, 9 or 11) and an odd number of people sitting around the table.

(Salt, pepper and sugar can count as separate dishes!)

Straw is often put under the tablecloth and you might even bring a wooden plough into the house and put it behind the door! These are meant to help you have good crops during the next year.

There’s a special round and decorated loaf of bread called ‘pita’ which has a coin baked in it. If you find the good you’re meant to have good luck for the next year! The bread is normally cut by the oldest person at the meal and hands it around the table.

It’s normally a rich vegetarian meal and includes dishes made of different such as beans soup, ‘sarmi’ cabbage leaves stuffed with rice, peppers stuffed with rice, boiled wheat with sugar and walnuts, different kinds of pastries (cheese, pumpkin and sweets pastries soaked in syrup), some kolaks, lots of fruits and nuts like dried plums, dried apricots, oranges and tangerines and ‘oshav’ a dried fruit compote.

Walnuts are especially popular. If you walnut is delicious you will have a good year, but if it’s empty or has a small nut you’ll have a bad year!

Christmas in Chile is very warm as it’s in the middle of summer!

However, it shares many of the same Christmas customs as the USA. People like to decorate their houses with Christmas Trees and lights. Having Christmas lights is a fairly recent development with more people being able to afford them.

Sometimes neighbors compete to see who can have the best and most lights!

Nativity Scenes are also an important decoration. They have little clay figures (called ‘pesebre’) in them.

Many Catholics in Chile celebrate Advent and also go to special church services for nine days before Christmas, known as a Novena.

Christmas Eve is the most important day over Christmas. Families and friends gather together for a big meal in the evening, eaten about 9pm or 10pm. Many people like to have ‘asado’ (barbecue) and chicken, turkey and pork. The Chilean Christmas Cake is ‘Pan de Pascua’ which is quite like Panettone.

A popular Christmas drink is ‘Cola de Mono’ (or monkey’s tail) which is made from coffee, milk, liquor, cinnamon and sugar.

After the meal, some people like to go to a church service.

At midnight everyone opens their presents! Children sometimes go round each others houses with their new toys - even in the middle of the night!

In Croatia, preparations for Christmas start on 25th November which is St Catherine’s day. People also celebrate Advent. Over 85% of people in Croatia are Catholics so Advent is an important time for them.

It’s traditional to have an Advent wreath made of straw or evergreen twigs which has four candles. The wreath symbolizes endlessness and the four candles symbolize different parts of history and life: First Candle (purple): cre• ation - hope; • Second Candle (purple): embodiment - peace; • Third Candle (pink): redemption - joy; • Fourth Candle (purple): ending - love; A fifth candle is sometimes added in the center which is lit on Christmas Day! You can buy wreaths, but many people like to make them. People also often have a paper Advent Calendar.

As well as St Catherine’s day, other saints days are celebrated in Advent in Croatia. On the 4th December it’s St Barbara’s Day; on the 6th December it’s St Nicholas’s Day and on 13th December it’s St Lucia’s/Lucy’s day.

On St Nicholas’s Eve (5th), children clean their shoes/boots and leave them in the window. They hope that St Nicholas will leave them chocolates and small presents in their boot. If children have been naughty, Krampus (a big monster with horns who sometimes travels with St Nicholas!) leaves them golden twigs to remind them to behave.

Facts About Christmas

In Argentina the weather is warm at Christmas. Preparations for Christmas begin very early in December and even in November.

Many people in Argentina are Catholic and they also celebrate Advent.

House are beautifully decorated with lights and wreaths of green, gold, red and white flowers. Red and white garlands are hung on the doors of houses. Christmas Trees are also very popular and they are often decorated by 8th December (the feast of the Immaculate Conception - when Catholics celebrate when Mary was conceived). Some people like to put cotton balls on the Christmas Tree to represent snow! Any tree might be made into a Christmas Tree - not just the traditional fir tree!

The Nativity scene or ‘pesebre’ is also an important Christmas decoration in Argentina. The pesebre is put near to the Christmas tree.

Christmas Cards aren’t common in Argentina and although some people give and receive presents, it’s normally only between close family and friends.

The main Christmas celebrations take place on Christmas Eve. Many Catholics will go to a Mass in the late afternoon.

The main meal Christmas is eaten during the evening of Christmas Eve, often about 10pm or 11pm. It might be served in the garden or be a barbecue! Some popular dishes include roasted turkey, roasted pork (in northern Argentina, some people will have goat), stuffed tomatoes, salads and Christmas bread and puddings like ‘Pan Dulce’ and Panetone.

In Colombia, Christmas celebrations and preparations start on the evening of the 7th December which is known as ‘Día de las Velitas’ or ‘Day of the little Candles’. Houses and streets are decorated with candles, lanterns and lots of lights. There are also big firework displays and music to dance to and foods like ‘buñuelos’ and ‘empanadas’. This day is celebrated by Catholics around the world as The Feast of the Immaculate Conception but is especially popular in Colombia.

From December 16 until Christmas Eve, many Colombians take part in ‘novenas’. These are special times when family, friends and neighbors come together to pray in the days leading up to Christmas. They are known as the ‘Novena de Aguinaldos’ (Christmas Novena) and often a different house hosts the meeting every night. As well as the prayers, people sing carols and eat lots of yummy foods! You can find out more about Novena de Aguinaldos on the Hispanic Culture online site.

People like to decorate their homes with Christmas Trees and other decorations. It’s very common for there to be candles (normally red and white) and other lights displayed in windows or on balconies. Another very important Christmas decoration in Colombia is a nativity scene or ‘el pesebre’. In early December, children write a ‘Carta al Niño Dios’ (letter to the baby Jesus) asking for what presents they would like. The letter is placed in the pesebre. They hope that Jesus will bring them presents on Christmas Eve.

During the evening of the 5th December, children are very excited and watch for St. Nicholas (Svatý Mikuláš) to arrive. He normally is accompanied by one or more angels and one or more devils. He asks the children if they’ve been good all year and also asks them to sing a song or recite a poem, and gives them a basket of presents, often containing chocolate and fruit. If you’ve been naughty, the devil might give you a lump of coal. Like in the The Netherlands and some other European countries, St Nicholas’ Day is a very separate holiday than Christmas.

In the Czech language Happy/ Merry Christmas is ‘Veselé Vánoce’.

The main Christmas celebrations are on Christmas Eve. Some people fast during Christmas Eve in the hope that they will see a vision of ‘the golden pig’ appear on the wall before dinner! This is meant to be a sign of good luck!

The Czech traditional Christmas dinner is eaten during the evening of Christmas Eve. The meal often consists of fish soup (made of carp), and fried carp with potato salad.

Ježíšek ‘Little Jesus’ (the Czech version of Christkindl) brings presents during the Christmas Eve dinner and leaves them under the Christmas Tree.

Czech children have their dinner in a different from where the tree is located.

When they hear the bell ring (usually after the children have finished eating their main meal but when they are still at the table), that means that Ježíšek had been and has left their presents under the tree. The presents are normally opened right after dinner.

“Silent Night” was first sung as part of a church service in Austria. A guitar was used because the church organ was so badly rusted it couldn’t be played.

In Germany there are many different characters for Christmas.

Nikolaus comes on December 5th and on December 24th when the actual opening of the gifts is happening ,they have been brought either by Knecht Ruprecht, Weihnachtsmann, or the Christkindl, (Christ child) wich is an angelic child dressed in a white and or golden dress much like a long nightgown. It has wings, and has usually a small horse or a donkey as a companion.
