RCMP files from December 3 - 9 Arthur Beaudette News Advertiser December 3 09:26 – Male attended the detachment to report that he is afraid of his wife. She is sending text messages to him. One text message appeared to be a threat. Reporting for information purposes.

11:04 – Report of an abandoned van in a field. The vehicle had been burnt and when investigated it was found that the vehicle had been stolen the night before. The registered owner was notified and the vehicle was removed.

12:54 – A report that someone has accessed the complainant’s phone and got into his bank accounts. Fraud investigation is ongoing.

13:50 – A complainant attended the detachment because her son was not replying to texts or calls. The son had not been in school since Nov 28th and was staying with a friend hunting.

Members were able to locate and speak with the son and determined that he was not in any danger.

14:03 – Report of a hit and run at a parking lot of a local shopping location.

The 2nd vehicle had left the scene. Still under investigation.

15:17 – Someone attended the detachment to turn over firearms and ammunition for destruction.

16:42 – Complaint of an online purchase of a vehicle for $1800 where goods were not received. The buyer did not receive a bill of sale and now cannot locate the seller or the vehicle.

21:16 – Report of a lost dog. The complainant was then contacted by two individuals who stated that they had her dog and would return if for $500. If they did not receive payment they stated that they would throw the dog in the highway. The complainant agreed to meet the subjects at a local gas station.

Members attended and arrested the two individuals for extortion and their vehicle was towed. This was a joint effort with Two Hills RCMP. The dog was returned to the owner.

December 4 14:56 – Report of a break and enter where a fence was cut at a commercial property. Still under investigation.

15:03 – Truck vs Semi. Motor vehicle collision where a truck hit a semi near Hwy 16. The truck rolled over and the semi stayed on the roadway. Neither driver were injured.

15:04 – Report of online fraud involving Indeed. A cheque had been received and when the recipient had called the company that was on the cheque, they

did not have any record of the cheque being mailed out.

22:18 – Semi rollover on Hwy 16 West of Mundare intersection. Two occupants had minor injuries.

RCMP attended with EMS and Fire.

December 5

08:53 – Report of a semi hitting the wing of a snow plow. A semi had passed a snow plow and hit the plow wing. The Semi was later flagged down by Emcon and the driver did not realize he had hit anything. There was no damage to the snow plow.

11:28 – RCMP executed a warrant under the “Children Abusing Drugs” act (PCHAD). Members located the youth, took him into custody and transported him to a counselling facility as directed by the courts.

13:20 – Report of a break and enter to a remote commercial site. The lock was cut on the yard gate and multiple items were stolen with others moved. Still under investigation.

14:31 – Report of someone attempting to steal gas from a vehicle while it was parked behind a business. The subject was scared off before successfully stealing fuel, however there was damage to the vehicle from the filling door being pried open. Still under investigation.

14:45 – Complainant reports receiving a call from someone about renewing her anti-virus. Reported for information purposes.

20:17 – 911 call from a male who found his intoxicated mother on the floor bleeding from her head. The male was un-cooperative in assisting members in locating the home and he did not know his address. Members patrolled with EMS and were able to locate the house when the caller agreed to step outside. It is believed that this was an accident. The mother was transported to hospital for treatment.

03:56 – While patrolling, members noted a suspicious vehicle near Lavoy.

The plate came back as stolen out of Saskatchewan. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested for possession of stolen property. During the arrest, the subject became combative with members. Once secured, the vehicle was towed and the subject was held for a remand hearing.

11:38 - Report of the theft of a wallet from a staff area at a local business.

Still under investigation.

19:08 – Report of someone under the influence of drugs disturbing the peace at a local business. Members attended, but the subject had fled prior. Patrols were negative.

December 7

08:37 – Report of mischief to and theft from a vehicle. Overnight, a

08:56 – A call from Fish and Wildlife about a deer on the side of the road dragging its hind quarters.

It is assumed that the deer had been hit.

Members attended, located the deer and put it down to end its suffering.

11:28 – Report of a suspicious male in a white Honda taking pictures of a house. Members located the vehicle and spoke to individual who stated that he was taking pictures of his childhood home to show his wife.

12:36 – Call from an alarm company about a tamper alarm.

Members attended with a key holder and ensured that the location was secure.

December 9

08:51 – Members on patrol witnessed a person using their cell phone while driving. The vehicle was stopped and a $287 ticket was issued.

14:12 – Report of two youths who had run away from a group home while on an outing in Vegreville. The investigation revealed that they had left Vegreville and are OK. Investigation is ongoing.

During the week there were 65 calls for service made in total including: 4 false alarms, 1 false 911 and 5 animal strikes.

Compulsory Breathalyzer Test: Changes to Driver Impairment Laws on December 18 Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser In less than one week, Part Two of a new legislation will be introduced by the federal government which makes on-demand breathalyzer tests after a lawful stop by the RCMP mandatory, among other road laws.

The federal government claims that this overhaul of the Criminal Code will be successful in simplifying and modernizing the transportation provisions, including the impaired driving provisions, in the Criminal Code to create a more coherent and efficient legislative framework.

On one hand, taking away the need for a driver to be already exhibiting risk-taking behaviours has the potential to help RCMP catch the 50% of drivers with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit who are not caught at check stops. By disguising their breath, and taking other precautions, many alcohol-impaired drivers have been able to fly under the radar.

But Ministers have assured that this will no longer be the case, with the vow

have no reason to worry about taking the breathalyzer test.

If a driver fails the roadside screening, a secondary test will be taken at a police detachment to more precisely determine the blood alcohol concentration, and the new laws will also prevent intoxicated drivers from getting behind the wheel for two hours afterwards.

The bottom line that they are trying to achieve is to catch as many impaired drivers as possible, to make roads safer

for everyone. In fact, these laws have been predated by similar laws in Australia, France, New Zealand, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, The Netherlands, and Sweden.

The penalties for impaired driving as of December 18, 2018 can be found on the Government of Canada website under “Criminal Justice – Impaired Driving Laws.”

Defences such as the “bolus driving

defense,” in which drivers can argue that the alcohol they drank just before driving was not fully absorbed, will be eliminated. The ability for a driver to claim they consumed alcohol after driving but before testing will also be eliminated, detailing that this defense will only be allowed in a situation where a driver drank after driving and had no reason to expect a demand by the police for breath testing.

On the other, there are some questions that have been raised by the Human Rights commission about whether taking away the need for reasonable suspicion of alcohol-impaired is the right choice… particularly because of the ways it could affect racial minorities who are pulled over by the police at a higher percentage than their Caucasian counterparts.

These worries have been addressed by a handful of Ministers who say that not only is the motive of saving lives “Incredibly justifiable,” but that police stops motivated by bias are unlawful, and inadmissible in court. The legislation does also read that a police officer will be able to test a breath sample “of any driver they lawfully stop.”

In 1990, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled 5-4 that random traffic stops do not violate a person’s Charter rights as long as police are checking for three specific things; licence, registration and insurance status, mechanical fitness of the vehicle or the sobriety of the driver.

All other debates about this legislation aside, if a driver has not been drinking or is confident that they are not over the legal limit (as they should be before driving anyways,) they should

Alberta’s Mini OPEC Will Fail Arthur Beaudette Opinion – Vegreville News Advertiser “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

As the Canadian federal government prepares to put the final nail in the coffin of Canada’s petroleum industry with Bill C-69, Quebec holds other provinces hostage and Alberta scrambles to limit the bleeding with regards to the deep discounts it is selling oil at.

Unfortunately, as Alberta scrambles to ship oil by other means and plans to cut oil production by 8.7% to address the losses, this tactic may see a short term gain, but will fail in the end.

The simple fact of the matter is that Alberta is under attack. It would be bad enough if this were only from the US, which is basically the only customer for our oil, but as we know, the truth is worse. We are also under attack from lobby

groups, other provinces and our federal government.

This is not the first time that oil has been used to attack. One of the most famous times in recent history this happened was the 1973 oil embargo which lasted from October of 1973 to March of 1974. The primary driver of this act was OAPEC’s displeasure with nations supporting Israel in the Yom Kippur War. OAPEC (Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries), Egypt and Syria declared production cuts and an oil embargo aimed at the United States, Great Britain, Canada, Japan and the Netherlands. This created a situation where drastic measures were taken in the US and Europe and quadrupled OPEC oil revenue due to rising oil prices.

Doctors and Patients Dear Editor, For the most part, this entire area is an area of seniors.

Seniors with many different health issues. This is a strain not only on our health care system; but also on doctors and patients alike.

Long gone are the days of the doctors who were of our culture and linguistic background, doctors familiar with our family histories and genetic make-up. We now have doctors from other parts of the world, good doctors with good qualifications who otherwise would not be allowed to practice in Alberta. Alberta is among the provinces with the highest standards for doctors. I am the mother of a doctor who achieved his education and practices in a rural setting in Alberta.

In defense of doctors: they do not have x-ray vision. They cannot look at you and see what is wrong. A patient must tell them what is wrong and describe the problem to the fullest extent. This means if there is pain then where is the pain,

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Christmas is a memorable time to spend with family and friends.

Vegreville and District Co-op’s December 4’s Entertaining Gala gave out recipes, tips, and samples to help make the holidays special, tasteful, and stylish.

Co-op store personnel and others representing producers presented demos, and gave out samples of a few of Co-op’s signature products. Some of these were Ryley Sausage, Co-op Gold Pure Apple Cider which tasted especially good when it was made into a punch, in-store made guacamole, and more.

People commented that the food was very good and they might try to make some of the recipes at home.

Customers also had a chance to enter a draw where they could win one of seven entertaining packages.

Shannon from Ryley Sausage and Vicky from Old School Cheesery give out samples of cheese and sausages that are for sale at Co-op.

90 Years Ago – December 12, 1928

Tony Engesser has his new greenhouses practically completed. It is located west of town on the main highway, next to L. Knies’ residence. The greenhouse is 20 X 40, and is well equipped with a big heating system, and located as it is on the property where the town has its wells, he is assured of a good supply of water. A greenhouse in Vegreville has been sadly needed for years, and the people of the town and district should get in touch with Mr. Engesser for all their needs along this line.

While en route to San Francisco to attend the marriage of his daughter, Miss May Holden, Mayor Holden and his son, Bob, were among the passengers on the Shasta Limited of the Southern Pacific Railway on December 2nd. The train left the rails near Roseburg, Oregon, and the locomotive and six coaches were piled in the ditch. Several people were injured, but none seriously. It is understood that Mr. Holden and Bob both escaped unhurt.

75 Years Ago – December 15, 1943

J.E. Caldwell re-opened his meat market in Innisfree next door to the telephone office in a building which he recently purchased.

Within the past few days, customers of the Vegreville Dairy were advised that on December 14th, milk deliveries within the town would cease and Mr. Napora made it stick by just quitting. It is the first time in the history of the town, (to the Observer’s recollection), that citizens have been put on the “cash and carry” system for securing their necessary milk supply. The situation is distinctly not appreciated.

Since the war began, Great Britain has spent $6,660,000,000 in the United States on supplies of all kinds.

An ambitious Plymouth Rock Pullet, owned by G. Fox, distinguished herself one day last week by laying an outsize egg which weighed 3 ounces and measured 7 ½ inches round the long way.

These balloon eggs are not unusual with older hens, but a six months pullet doesn’t often aspire to such a performance.

Mr. and Mrs. Jim Rennie have returned from Sedgewick, where they have lived for the past several months. Jim has enlisted and will have to join his unit early in January. Mrs. Rennie will remain in Vegreville.

50 Years Ago - December 12, 1968

An enthusiastic audience greeted contestants in the Kinsmen Club sponsored Associated Canadian Travellers – CFRN Search for Talent program in the Peter Svarich School Auditorium in Vegreville on Saturday night. Top performer for the evening was Miss Vonnie Babiuk, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Babiuk of Willingdon who presented a piano solo. Miss Babiuk was presented the Sunwapta Trophy for her performance.

Canadian Pension Plan retirement pensions will be paid at age 66 in 1969, a year younger than in 1968.

John Shopka and Ann Speidel, florists in the community who are faced with the problem of not having rear access to their business premises approached the council with the hope that parking zones could be provided them for the loading and unloading of perishable flowers. At one time the two firms enjoyed double parking privileges but these apparently were done away with, with the change in the Municipal Act. Council felt that in order to accommodate the two, parking areas could be reserved with the signs for the same to be paid for by the firms in question.

At the same meeting truck traffic, parking problems and house moving as well as salary talks all took place.

25 Years Ago – December 14, 1993

Vegreville Treasury Branch manager Bill Yizek received gifts from staff member Fiona Sorochan Friday in recognition of his 30 years service to the Treasury Branch.

Confirmation that Immigration Canada’s Vegreville Case Processing Centre is going ahead was greeted with relief and anticipation locally. “I’m certainly pleased the new federal government went ahead and didn’t try to stop it,” said Mayor Kay McKenzie. “It means a lot to this community.”

County of Minburn council supported upgrading of the Vegreville Municipal Seed Cleaning Plant in order to obtain the provincial grant. Due to budget restraints, the county is unable to contribute towards the upgrading. The cost of upgrading was 12,217.26.

There are a few honest people left in the world. Just ask Vegreville resident Floyd Tuck. Tuck thought he’d lost an irreplaceable ring at Edmonton’s Jubilee Auditorium while attending his granddaughter’s university convocation. Tuck is a member of the Scottish Right, a sub group of the Mason’s, and received the ring 11 years ago. He phoned back to the Jubilee Auditorium and asked the employee if the ring had turned up. “She said ‘describe it’ just like that and I did,” he recalls. “She then told me ‘you don’t have to go any further, I’m looking at it.”

Canadian Taxpayers Federation Reacts to Corporate Welfare Handout to Maple Leaf Foods Aaron Wudrick Canadian Taxpayers Federation OTTAWA, ON: Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) Federal Director Aaron Wudrick released the following statement in response to today’s joint federal-provincial announcement of a $62.5 million taxpayer subsidy to Maple Leaf Foods: “Canadian and Ontario taxpayers just found out they’re getting the opportunity to make an involuntary donation of $62 million to a profitable, private business.

“Usually, corporate welfare is rationalized as job creation, but this case is a unique innovation: 300 employees are getting fired.

“While taxpayers have many questions, apparently none of the decision-makers involved considered this glaringly obvious point: ‘Why would it be unreasonable for a business such as Maple Leaf to simply pay for its own processing plant itself, especially in the dynamic innovative strategic industry of ‘cutting up chickens?’

“Nor is this about simply padding the bottom line for Maple Leaf - both the Ford and Trudeau government are hoping this announcement will deliver consid-

erable political spinoff benefits for politicians, providing they can keep a straight face while saying the word ‘investment.’

“Following in a long legacy of bipartisan handout tradition that includes such infuriatingly memorable recipients as Bombardier and General Motors, why would taxpayers worry that the promised economic benefits may not materialize exactly as promised?

“Here’s one result that’s a certainty: taxpayers will remember that the Ford and Trudeau governments are respecting their tax dollars by putting them where they are most obviously unneeded: into the pockets of a corporation for the purpose of building a chicken processing plant.”

Alberta Advantage Party seeks to raise awareness facing the 2019 election Marilyn Burns Leader – Alberta Advantage Party “There comes a time”, says Marilyn Burns, Leader of the Alberta Advantage Party, “when a discontented partner begins to ask whether it’s worth it.”

The Alberta Advantage Party received registered political party status by Elections Alberta about one month ago, by having about 8,600 signatures on a petition asking that the Party be officially registered. Burns notes that during the approximate one year signature drive, she talked to thousands of Albertans and a dominant issue raised was the desire for greater autonomy from Ottawa.

“The chatter amongst Albertans about out and out separation from Canada is growing”, Burns states.

“Increasingly, Albertans from all walks of life are wondering aloud whether it is worth it for Alberta to remain a Canadian Province. Alberta has taken an economic hit in recent years, and Albertans perceive that the rest of Canada has been throwing us boulders while we are drowning.”

“The AAP is not a separatist party, but our Platform draws clear lines in the sand as it relates to Ottawa. New Principal, Joe Kucy Brings His Enthusiastic Spirit to St. Martin’s School Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent The new Principal, Joe Kucy is pleased and excited to be at St. Martin’s School as he remembers how friendly everyone was to him when he started his position on August 20. One of his finest memories was when a student gave him a big hug when they got off the bus.

Spirit School. So, Kucy believes that pursuing the field of education really runs in the family.

Kucy resides at Camrose now with his wife and three children. He met his wife who is also a teacher when Kucy was teaching in Fort McMurray.

Kucy started by pursuing the science and math field at university. After this, he began working with a lot of youths and he found it really enjoyable to tutor young people. The experience of student teaching and really working with kids was something that really became his passion! So, he went on to pursue an after degree in education.

When Kucy graduated from the University of Alberta, he received a teaching job in Fort McMurray. Then he went on

to be a Science and Math teacher at Camrose. He was also the football coach there. He moved on to being a vice-principal and then a principal at the school in Camrose.

Kucy said the best part of being a teacher and a principal is coming to school every day and having a new challenge and experience. The students come to St. Martin’s School and they are so wide-eye and ready to learn something. It is a new day every day. It is never the same routine. The challenges of seeing them have discussions and working with other kids, as well as, learning new things and the way the kids are changing every day is so amazing. “This is my 24th year in education and I can’t believe it has gone by so fast,” Kucy admitted.

Kucy thinks there are exciting changes that are happening in education.

One of these is the amount of technology available and working together in groups and with other people. That has been a real change. High School Redesign and Inspiring Education has changed the way education is working.

Kids are being challenged to do better all the time.

Kucy said some of the challenges are education is always under-funded and different kids need to be educated in different ways. We all have different learning patterns. He plans to try to ensure every child is successful. This takes the cooperation of the parents and the community.

Kucy thinks St. Martin’s School is a wonderful school. He has a lot of knowledge and a wealth of experience from the two other schools he worked at.

This helps him bring a different dynamic to the staff and school. They now have new activities and reward programs to motivate the kids to make better choices. “The biggest goal is to make sure the kids make the right choice and to take ownership of their behavior,” Kucy said.

“St. Martin’s School has a rich history. Now, we want to make our school the best it can be and attract new students to our school. We want to make this an exciting building for the kids to come to. It is a great school! We have fantastic teachers and staff at this school!” Kucy added.

The Innisfree-Minburn 4-H Beef Club held our December meeting on December 5 in Innisfree at 7pm.

We attended the 4-H regional volleyball in Vermillion on Sunday December 2. Everyone played well and our team brought home a bronze medal.

For our Christmas party, we will be going to Lloydminster after Christmas for some fun

activities.

January 4 is 4-H night at Rogers Place in Edmonton where the Oil Kings will be taking on the Victoria Royals.

At our next meeting, we will have a public speaking workshop with Quinn Hlus, where she will give an overview on how to write and deliver a 4-H speech. We will work to finetune these skills for the public speaking competition at the Minburn hall on February 8, 2019.

Our next meeting will be in Minburn January 9, 2019 at 6:30. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Using Light Bushel Weight Barley in Cattle Rations

Alberta Ag-Info Centre Due to hot and dry conditions this year, bushel weight of some grains is much lower than what is considered normal. Barry Yaremcio, beef and forage specialist at the Alberta Ag-Info Centre outlines how to best use it as feed.

Yaremcio says that initial reports indicate that bushel weight of threshed grains is variable and that the bushel weight of barley is ranging from 35 to 50 pounds per bushel. “Feedlots and elevators are more than willing to take the heavy-weight barley without any hesitation or discounts. When barley bushel weights are below approximately 46 lb., the number of marketing options start to shrink, and there can be significant price discounts when the contract is negotiated.”

Feeding light bushel weight grain to cattle is an opportunity to utilize a product that is discounted in the market but retains its value in a cow, backgrounding, or home finishing program. Research from the mid-1980s conducted by Dr. Gary Mathison and Dr. Larry Milligan from the University of Alberta, compared average daily gain and feed conversion efficiency when finishing steers were fed barley with different bushel weights. Bushel weights varied from a low of 34 lb. to a high of 51 lb. The 47 lb. barley was considered to be of “average quality,” and 90 steers were fed a 90 percent concentrate diet for 84 days.

“They reported that light barley contained less starch and protein, but more fibre and ash than the heavy barley,” explains Yaremcio. “The results indicate that there is no difference in average daily gain between the different bushel weight grains. Feed conversion efficiency was less efficient for the lightweight grain at 7 lb. of feed to produce 1 lb. of gain, and the heavy barleys were required only 6.7 lb. of feed to produce 1 lb. of gain. The reported difference in feed efficiency was four percent. They also found no differences in efficiency between the steamrolled and dry-rolled barley.”

Yaremcio adds that in other trials, the loss in feeding efficiency between feeding whole or rolled barley to feedlot steers or mature cows ranged from 12 to 15 percent. “With barley at approximately $5.00 per bushel, it is economical to process the grain if the processing cost is less than $0.60 to $0.75 per bushel.”

“To optimize grain feeding efficiency, grain should be rolled prior to feeding feedlot animals and mature cows. A properly processed barley grain should have a processing index between 75 and 81 percent,” notes Yaremcio. “In other words, the weight of the processed grain should be between 75 and 81 percent of the whole grain bushel weight.”

Yaremcio uses a 48 lb. barley as an example. “It should weigh between 36 and 39 lb. after rolling is complete. When barley is processed to this extent, digestibility is optimized and problems with acidosis is reduced. If the processing index is too high - over 81 percent - insufficient processing results in a loss in efficiency. If the processing index is too low - below 75 percent - the grain is over processed which could cause sub clinical acidosis which reduces feed intake and animal performance.”

Spending time to adjust the rollers to obtain a 75 to 81 percent rolling index is worth the time and effort. Explains Yaremcio, “If the rolls are not reset, a lightweight grain will pass through the mill and will not have the processing to optimize utilization. This will reduce performance, and in the long run, net dollars when animals are sold or overall cost of feeding cows is calculated.”

Netball Vegreville Wins Gold Shayla Dube President – Netball Vegreville Netball Vegreville Scramblers attended their first tournament in Calgary at Southland Leisure Centre on Saturday November 24th, where they played against 8 Calgary Level B teams in one day.

They won all 7 games and tied 12-12 for the 8th game, which qualified them for the 9th final game.

The team had set out for the experience of swimming with the sharks, but in the end emerged ‘the Sharks’. With a final score of 15-13, the Scramblers were crowned the Gold Medalist Champions!

Netball was introduced to Vegreville on May 14, 2018 and the league has been playing all seasons since then, boasting three to four adult teams.

However, since winter kicked in, their ship has seemed to be sinking as the attendance has declined dismally.

Those who have stuck to it have enjoyed Netball as a no-contact team sport like no other, where players benefit from a good cardiovascular workout which improves their overall fitness, flexibility and strength while having a blast! Because of this, registration has remained open year-round in all their teams.

Herman Dorin Inducted into Alberta Sports Hall of Fame Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser After a long career in coaching high school wrestling across Alberta, Herman Dorin of Bruce, Alberta, Herman Dorin was officially inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in Red Deer in honour of his contributions to the sport.

Herman Dorin grew up in the Bruce area on a farm. “When I was about 14-15 years old, we stooped about 400 acres of grain,” Dorin reminisced, “My brothers and I hauled about 500 bushels an hour with a pitchfork, ten loads a day until it was done… I was in good shape to start wrestling.”

While there wasn’t much opportunity for sports in Bruce, the start to Dorin’s wrestling career was when he attended the University of Alberta. He started by losing enough weight to start small in the 150 lb class, then eventually let himself gain enough weight to join higher classes and even the heavyweight class in 1954.

Herman remembered his first competitions. He shared the story of his first provincial’s competition in 1950, where he lost only to return the next year for victory against the same opponent in 1951. From 1950-1965, Dorin went undefeated in Alberta.

It was in that period that he began supporting the sport, and sponsored the provincials held at Concordia University in 1954.

Since receiving his teaching degree, Dorin preferred to teach at schools in small communities, and coached wrestling teams into success. He coached wrestling while working as a guidance commissioner in 1967, and from 19701983 in a wrestling club.

In 1970, Dorin and his wife bought a farm in Central Alberta, and chose to ranch the land instead of farming crops until his open-heart surgery in 2014.

From 1982-84, Dorin led the wrestling team for the Alberta Winter Games, with 15 year old wrestlers in a

zone from Banff to Saskatchewan.

Herman Dorin was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame as a pioneer for the sport of wrestling in Alberta.

When asked why he chose to continue coaching wrestling throughout his career, Dorin said it’s simply because he loved it. “I also played basketball for awhile, but wrestling was always the sport I excelled at. I love the sport, and I enjoyed passing that on to students year after year.”

He is not coaching anymore at present, but enjoys taking in wrestling tournaments when he can. In 2017, he enjoyed watching the wrestling championships in Cochrane.

“They are much better-equipped these days,” Dorin said, “The gym had full-size wrestling mats, which we never had before.” Dorin chuckled, “We used to use tumbling mats that we’d just set up right next to eachother, and they would split apart sometimes, so we’d land on the floor.”

The letter sent to the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame selection committee by Andrew Ross, the Technical Director of the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association, explained the impact Dorin had on the wrestling community through his own 15 years undefeated in the ring, his years working as coach and Head Coach for the University of Alberta team, and more. “…During this (that) time he laid the foundation of a city-wide system for wrestling, founding the Edmonton Amateur Wrestling Federation…

Herman Dorin had a tremendous career as an athlete, coach and builder across the province, growing the established centres of Edmonton and Calgary, but also building the sport in rural centres in the 1950s and beyond.

“This legacy continues today, with national champions and medalists hailing from communities across Alberta on an annual basis.”

Jenna and Teegan Fedoruk Victorious at Tournament

On two back-to-back weekends, Vegreville sisters Teegan and Jenna Fedoruk took home gold medals in their respective divisions at the widely recognised WickFest, a tournament put on by Team Canada’s Hayley Wickenheiser.

On November 16-18, Jenna Fedoruk and her team, the Sherwood Park Fuzion, went 4-0 in Round-Robin to guarantee themselves a spot in the Sunday final. The Fuzion met the Whitehorse Mustangs and held on for a 2-1 win to bring home the Gold Medal.

The following weekend, Teegan Fedoruk and her team, the Sherwood Park Royals,

dominated the Round-Robin to also secure a spot in their Sunday gold-medal game. The Royals put up some solid offence and stellar goal-tending to come out with a 3-0 win over their league rivals, North Central Impact.

Both Fedoruk sisters were also recognised as Player of the Game over the weekend.

Above and beyond these victories, the highlight of both weekends wasn’t about what took place on the ice… it just might have been when Jenna’s team went out for dinner and met up with none other than Ryan NujentHopkins and a little-known fellow by the name of Wayne Gretzky.

mini Opec will fail - CONTINUED from PAGE 4 prices of the 1970s, industrial nations took steps to reduce their dependence on OPEC oil. These efforts resulted in two things. First, nations curbed their oil use and made changes to increase efficiencies. Secondly, and possibly most importantly, they reduced their dependence on OPEC oil. This was achieved primarily by those affected the most developing their own resources.

While cutting production in Alberta will provide short term relief (we cannot sit idly by) the long-term result may be the replacement of that production from other sources.

Look south for the answer to this. The US announced last

week that they are now a net oil exporter for the first time in 75 years. Obviously, this means they do not actually need our oil imports. In fact, they can make around $35 per barrel of oil by just reselling what they import from us and from 2013 to 2017 the shift was 32% less imports from Canada. This may not be a permanent shift on the world stage, but it should ring loudly in Canadian ears. They are also on pace to become the world’s top oil exporter.

While we cannot even break ground for one pipeline in Canada, the US has approximately $40 billion in investment to build or expand 10,000 miles of pipeline to connect consumers and export terminals. They too have a problem with getting oil to market, but are taking tangible steps to solve the issue.

Finally, last week the US Geological Survey

revised its estimates of reserves in the Permian basin. They announced estimates of 46.3 billion barrels of crude and 281 trillion cu ft of natural gas in reserves. That’s up from 20 billion barrels of crude and 16 trillion cu ft of gas in recoverable reserves estimated in late 2016. The math is easy.

Unfortunately, the writing is on the wall. Because of our own government’s ineptness, we are in a position where we no longer control our own destiny. Alberta (and by extension all of Canada) will be a spectator for the foreseeable future, relegated to sit on the sidelines while other countries meet the demand of the world markets.

One only needs to look at the past to see our future.

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser On December 8, 2018, Two Hills rang in the holidays with their annual Christmas market, Christmas-only craft and baked-goods vendors.

One vendor, Judy Ewaniuk from between Vegreville brought her seasonal goods; wreaths and decorations for a homey, festive glow that she sells exclusively at Christmas time. These decorations were joined by larger wood ornaments made by Judy’s husband, such as end tables with ornate glass tops.

Others, such as Lindsay Breau and Chelsea Dadensky, sold handmade gifts that they make year-round. “We craft when we’re bored,” laughed Chelsea.

As a family endeavour, Eva Hryniw and her granddaughter Mackenzie Robinson sold baked goods such as elephant ears, cookies, and much more. And they weren’t the only ones: a few more vendors brought their baked goods, either seasonal or timeless year-round delights, to cure the sweet tooth of

any shoppers who attended the sale in search of sweets.

Home-based distribution businesses such as Steeped Tea and Stella and Dot also attended, as well as the workmanship of Willow Inspirations, Dido’s Workshop, and Lulu’s Tutus.

The organiser for the event, Barb Hryniw said that the table attendance was pretty standard, but a hockey tournament between Edmonton teams at the Two Hills Arena may have contributed to the attendance.

“Everything is just about the same as last year,” said Hryniw, “ Attendance was free for shoppers to browse through the tables of gift items, and the tables each reported a busy morning that slowed down throughout the day. Free coffee and juice were also available, among the many free samples offed at tables such as banana coconut loaf, Steeped Tea, and peppermint Rice Krispy squares.

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser The second season performance organized by the Beaver Regional Arts Society drew from local talent for a performance by Holden musicians Winnie Brave at the Paragon Theatre on December 9, 2018.

The Beaver Regional Arts Society provides regular performances to the community not only in Holden but also Edmonton, Camrose, and the surrounding community, throughout the fall-winter season each year. This 39th season, they continue to provide entertainment and the arts with strength and dedication.

Winnie Brave was chosen as the last Beaver Regional Arts Society performance of 2018, for a Christmas-themed concert to pass the time on Sunday afternoon. “Christmas with Winnie Brave” attracted a full auditorium with spectators of all ages.

After moving to Holden from Ontario, they have been steeped in all the smalltown charm Holden has to offer. Some anecdotes about their personal journey, experiences of small-town Alberta, and how that often lends inspiration for their song writing elicited some laughter and understanding nods from the audience.

Winnie Brave entertained the audience with Christmas favourites, country classics, and some of their own original songs such as “The Deep End,” and “Holden Hotel.”

The event ended with a Christmas Patron Appreciation with Christmas Carols, fruit punch, and squares, followed by a roast beef supper served for $15 per person.

The award is given to teachers who exhibit ingenuity, dedication, and community spirit in their day-to-day work.

Miller was nominated by a colleague at VCHS, and is excited to pass along the recognition by nominating other Career and Technology Studies teachers in future years.

“As young teachers, we all start out wanting someone to recognize the work we’re doing, and it can start to feel like you’re an island,” said Miller, “But as you grow older, you kind of get into a rhythm, and you know your work is important, so you let the satisfaction come from the job itself. Which is good, but it’s a good feeling to know that your peers see your work too.”

She added that she will be keeping her eye out and nominating colleagues in the years to come. “There are so many out there doing good work,” Miller said.

Deanna Miller has worked at the Vegreville Composite High School for the past four years as the Foods and Fashion teacher. While there are other teachers in Foods studies, she is the only Fashion teacher at VCHS. She says that in the hustle of getting the right supplies, the right people, and putting together her vision for projects, the school has always supported her class with what she needed.

EIPS said that Miller stood out among the competition for her innovative teaching style, her devotion to professional learning and the unique educational opportunities she offers to students. Her experience over the past 15 years has mostly involved Career and Technology Studies.

“I love what I do, and I try to approach everything in life with an open heart and an open mind, treating every interaction as an opportunity to grow and learn,” she adds. “Students, colleagues, parents, friends and family all contribute to who I am and what I’ve accomplished.”

VVA Student Art Contest Winners

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Vegreville Visual Artists really believes in promoting and supporting local artists. At the recent VVA Christmas Art Show and Sale, there was an art contest for students from all five schools in Vegreville. The artwork was featured at the show and voted on by people’s choice.

On December 4, Vegreville Visual Artists, Lois Bienvenue and Martha Die went to the schools to present the prizes to the winners.

The winner from Grade five at St. Martin’s School was Sidney Dribnenki who won an art kit. Sidney was very thrilled to win a huge art kit with every

art supply imaginable in it. She said she learned a lot by participating and it felt great to win. She will be doing a lot of drawing and painting with the art kit.

The winner from Grade nine at Vegreville Composite High School was Jenna Cronk who said she is really happy that she participated in the art contest and she is so excited about the art kit she won as it is so cool!

How intense is the pain, tolerable, aggravating, or debilitating? Doctors do not expect their patients to have medical technology skills to describe what is wrong with them. Our doctors do not have the time to play twenty-questions.

In defense of the patient: You are given only one body. It is the most important “house” you’ll ever own.

When you go to see the doctor, please have your list ready. Don’t laugh.

Many, many people draw blanks when they are one-on-one with a doctor.

They might remember one thing but forget another. Or worse, they do not have the language skills to articulate where and how they hurt in plain language. If a patient cannot explain what is happening inside their body, then they should have a friend/family member with them who can. This is so easy for a parent with a child. The parent is the primary care-taker, knowing what

is wrong. This is not so easy for some adults. We are social animals. We will often share with a friend/family member in detail what is wrong but when we get in the presence of an authority figure like a doctor, we blank out.

We complain because doctors come and go through our communities like wind moving through a tennis racquet; but, how do we contribute to that? Do I dare use the word racism? Do I dare say that there are those whose eyes shutter with a veil of discord and distrust when they see a different color of skin or a hijab? Believe me, these “different” doctors are educated enough to be here or they would not be!

Vegreville Liquor Bag Campaign Returns for SADD Alberta Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser This year, schools from Vegreville and Mundare participated in the Students Against Drinking and Driving (SADD) Alberta Liquor Bag Campaign. The schools did an amazing job and Community Peace Officers handed out 900 bags to our local Liquor stores.

SADD Alberta is a registered, nonprofit, organization that had its beginnings in 1990. It was created to inspire and motivate young people to stand up and eliminate drinking and driving, which is the number one cause of death and injury in Alberta youth.

Their goal is to unite the youth of our province in the stand against impaired driving and its predominance in today’s

society. Their goal statement reads, “By uniting the province’s future, its youth, we wish to eliminate the number one criminal cause of death. SADD Alberta strives to do this through inspiring and motivating the youth of the province, and by assisting them in reaching their individual chapter goals.”

The Alberta Game and Liquor Commission (AGLC) describes the Liquor Bag Campaign as an initiative to raise awareness. This year, nearly 300 schools throughout the province created impaired driving messages on more than 63,000 liquor bags.

Each year from September to May, SADD and the AGLC work together with elementary, junior high, and high schools to have students write a message relating to the dangers of

impaired driving on a paper liquor bag. The teachers and SADD representatives then deliver the bags to liquor stores in their community throughout the Christmas season.

SADD attributes their success as a whole to the success of each individual chapter in campaigning to raise awareness.

The hard work of the Vegreville and Mundare schools will contribute to the much larger goal of eliminating intoxicated driving and all of the calamity that comes with it from roads in Alberta.

The winning design will be printed on one million bags and distributed to participating liquor stores across Alberta starting May long-weekend.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent The Parent Link Centre’s slogan reads, “Play, Learn, Connect,” and the Hot Eats, Cool Story’s program, featuring The Gingerbread Man on December 3 did all this and more.

The program started with free play and then the children enjoyed a light supper of gingerbread sandwiches.

After this, everyone decorated a gingerbread man cookie however they wanted to.

Story time was next where Community Programmer for PLC, Litania Holyk read a story about a gingerbread man and there was another story that was kept interactive as the children were able to finish the sentences and decide what happened next.

Holyk said this program helped children’s creativity and fine motor skills, they learned to play with others, as well as, it helped to get them into the Christmas spirit.

Delightful Couple Orest and Elsie Hunka’s 65 Years of Marriage Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent Orest and Elsie Hunka celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on October 17! This delightful couple credits their long and happy marriage to total honesty and never keeping a secret from each other. From observing them, one might wonder if it is not also due to their positive attitudes and great respect they seem to have for each other.

Elsie went to a country school where there were no bus services. So, they had to rent a house in Hairy Hill to go to high school. So, around that time the school burned down and they were driven to school in town by car. There were four boys who went to school this way too and Elsie sat next to Orest. Elsie admitted that she liked Orest right away because he seemed really nice and was good looking.

Orest said Elsie really impressed him because she played first base and could hit a homerun like no one else could.

They dated for five years where they broke up in the meantime but somehow they always got back together.

Orest and Elsie were married on October 17, 1953 in a country church on a beautiful day. Orest said on their honeymoon, Elsie was driving the farm truck and helping with the farm work.

Orest worked in Edmonton for a Pepsi Company during their early years of marriage. Elsie worked for a short period at Swifts.

They continued to farm together also. Elsie worked in the field doing every type of chore. “Our early

years of marriage were wonderful, we had cattle and we would get up in the morning when it was 40 below and feed them. Then whoever came to the house first made breakfast. This was usually Orest and those breakfasts were great because Orest is a good cook.

Sometimes, we would take the car and go out for breakfast.” Elsie said.

They had a son and a daughter, Barry and Darlene.

Elsie said they really enjoyed being parents but their kids grew-up too fast. Today, Barry still works on the

farm and owns Hunka Construction. Darlene is a registered nurse. Orest and Elsie have three grandchildren who they are very proud of.

They loved traveling and visited Hawaii frequently.

They remember when they were in Hawaii when the tsunami hit Hawaii and they witnessed and survived the tsunami. “It was scary and really something especially when the highways were closed and no one could travel,” Elsie said.

They also traveled to the Ukraine in 1978 and saw where Elsie’s mother’s roots were. They visited other countries and places together too. “Being married is fun; we shared a lot of the same interests and hobbies and we spent a lot of time together. I believe this is what kept our marriage good and made us close,” Elsie said.

Orest said he liked the way Elsie was a good worker and that she liked to travel with him. “She never talked back, she just listened.”

Elsie answered that if she had to talk back, she did.

Elsie sang with the Multi-Cultural Melodiants. Orest was the manager for this group. Elsie said he was always there for them and a very good manager.

Orest and Elsie reside at Vegreville Manor now which they say is a really good seniors’ home as it is just one floor and has nice rooms and plenty of entertainment.

In their later years, Orest had health challenges but they found a way to get adjusted to these obstacles together.

The advice they would give anyone who is married is to be honest with each other about everything.

Leave No One Behind’s Pancake Brunch ning into a former classmate at the food court of West Edmonton Mall. This person is tired of the traffic, hustle and bustle of city life, and wants a more community type of lifestyle. They convince him that Vegreville would be the perfect choice as it offers everything anyone would want or need.

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent People with disabilities have unique potentials and contribute so much to society. Hence, December 3 is International Day of Persons with Disabilities. To celebrate Vegreville’s theme of Leave No One Behind and the international theme of Empowering Persons with Disabilities Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality, a Pancake Brunch was presented at Senior Citizen Sunshine Club of Vegreville Centre on December 3.

There were around 171 people who attended this event.

Everyone was welcomed to this event and the admission was just a silver collection donation which generated $619.90, with an additional $85.00 from silent auction items. From these funds, $352.45 will be forwarded to Sunshine Club and $352.45 will go to Vegreville Food Bank.

Upon entering, people could browse the Support Services Booths, VCHS LINKS Art Class Displays, or bid on the silent auction items. Then they were served a hearty pancake breakfast.

Extremely severe brain damage survivor, Curtis Anderson was the emcee and the (motivational) guest speaker. He is also a cowboy poet.

Anderson welcomed everyone while he said, One Day at a Time was his graduation theme and he kept that theme on the road to his recovery. June 27, 2002 will be a day he will always remember because he was competing in the bull riding at the Ponoka Stampede and he lost his balance and was struck in the head twice by the bull’s head. This accident led to a long and challenging journey of recovery which Anderson

met with determination and courage. As a result, he progressed very well and continues to get better.

Employment Facilitator for Employ Abilities North in Vegreville, Marnie Sydora spoke next where she said the IDPD gives attention to the many ways people with disabilities enrich our community. It also increases awareness and understanding of disabilities issues and increases support for persons with disabilities.

After this, Special Guest, Cathy Smith from Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities presented her address where she said the council role is to provide advice on equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, and opportunities for them to reach their full potential to engage in life in the province. She is there to bring back whatever comments and concerns the people might have.

Following this, Sydora spoke about Employ Abilities which is a service that offers a variety of employment programs and services to individuals with disabilities and their employers.

The celebration continued with the award presentation where Sydora announced that Vegreville Emergency Services were the recipient of the Employment Award of Excellence for employing persons with disabilities.

Doug Hopper has been a part of the Vegreville Fire Department where he served as a janitor, and has participated in various other opportunities. Doug presented this award to Representatives from VES-Chris Jardine and Vicki Collison. Honorable mention awards were given to Vantage Builders and Adam’s No Frills.

The finale was a presentation of an original script, ‘If You Don’t Ask and Try, You’ll Never Know,’ written and performed by Vegreville’s Readers Theatre. This play was about them run-

A Passenger Train through Vegreville?

Rosanne Fortier News Correspondent To give residents a special time to spend with their family, Heritage House hosted their Resident and Family Christmas Party on December 8 where each resident could invite two people for free.

There was also a free draw to win two door prizes.

The celebration began with a hearty traditional Christmas feast complete with all the classics dishes and roast beef and turkey that was very tender and simply delicious.

After the meal, Santa paid a visit where he presented each resident with treats and a Christmas gift. General Manager for Heritage House, Alexis Bauer, staff and volunteers helped Santa pass around the gifts.

Following this, everyone was treated to a concert by Aven Grace who is an internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter.

Aven was born and raised in Nunavut and she now calls Saskatchewan home. Aven said she has been performing music since she was a young girl and her favorite part is bringing joy to people in the audience.

Aven performed traditional Christmas songs, as well as, new ones she wrote. She encouraged the audience to sing along to carols they were familiar with.

She sang a new song she wrote about an old thing called “Quilt of Memories”. Another song she wrote was about an old tin star which crowned the top of the Christmas tree. “Love at Christmas” was another heart-warming she wrote.

Aven had a lovely voice which carried every note and tune well. Each of her performances received a heartfelt applause and people commented that the music was very beautiful at the end.

Emily Mailhot Reporter – Vegreville News Advertiser At the Vegreville Town Council Meeting on December 10, 2018, significant plans, projections, and projects were discussed by Mayor MacPhee and the rest of council.

For the first time, Vegreville (and all other municipalities in the province) was required to add a 3-year and 5-year plan to the 2019 budget, to look ahead at how the Town will use their funds in the foreseeable future.

Mayor Tim MacPhee said that they are thankful for the many hours administration dedicated to this task, and for the hard work of Council in helping to prioritize the needs of all Vegreville’s residents. “Everyone had their own ideas and their own priorities, but I think we’ve come up with something we can all be happy with.”

In addition to helping the Town set aside funds for some necessary bigger projects, such as future maintenance to the water pump, the budget itself includes a 1% raise in property taxes for the next year to accommodate for any future wages increase for Town employees.

This increase will offer insurance to the Town that they will be able to pay their employees a fair wage no matter what changes occur.

“We have to be careful,” said Mayor MacPhee, “Because property values are decreasing, we all need to save money someplace. The 1% increase may not even show up on property owner’s taxes as having made any difference.”

Councillor Rudyk also said that with other reviews that have been done, the 1% increase in property tax is unlikely to be a factor in deterring new residents from buying homes in Vegreville.

Following the budget and 3-5 year plans, the Council discussed the current tech review and

budget done by local company Shineatek.

Following this review, new phones will be installed, as well as modernized systems to help the Town run more efficiently.

After discussions with Mayor Gerald Aalbers of Lloydminster and Mayor Ryan Bater of North Battleford, Town Council has sent a letter of support regarding the re-routing of VIA Rail passenger trains to the Prairie North Line, which passes through town.

Mayor MacPhee stated that this opportunity could affect tourism in Vegreville, with the possibility of building a platform at the Pysanka Park, and creating ways for passengers to enjoy Vegreville.

All of the councillors in attendance at the meeting agreed that should Mayors Aalbers and Bater’s bid go through, the passenger train is an opportunity worth looking into for Vegreville.

In regards to how this may affect the already-inconvenient traffic situations caused by trains in Vegreville, Mayor MacPhee says that by working with CN and VIA Rail to find solutions, there would be little-to-no change.

Some solutions have already been discussed, but nothing will be set in stone until the bid is approved.

And finally, changes that were hastily made to the Town’s Snow Removal Policy (MOS-20046.0) in February following blizzardy conditions were made more organized and functional at the request of Infrastructure. The Policy, as it now reads, has moved the decision of which of the listed priority roads (I.e. schools, hospital, etc.) into the hands of administration in that department. They hope that with this revision, the policy will be more operational.
