Heritage restoration project underway at Warwick Hall Derek Fox Submitted Members of Warwick Hall and the Warwick Ladies Club are pleased to announce their joint Heritage Restoration Project. “We have an opportunity and an obligation to maintain them in good condition for the enjoyment and education of future members of our community,” said Don Lobay, President of the Warwick Hall. “There’s an important cultural link here too,” notes
Derek Fox, former Vegreville MLA and Secretary Treasurer of the Hall. “It was founded in May of 1936 as the ‘T. Shevchenko Community Association of Warwick Alberta’ in honour of the famous Ukrainian poet and artist Taras Shevchenko. That adds even more historic significance to this unique project.” The funds for the restoration will come from individual donations only. Community ‘Founders’, ‘Members’ and ‘Supporters’ can purchase a plaque for $50 that will become part of the ‘Warwick Tree’. This artwork is designed, built and donated by Debra Cherniawsky-Durrer and will remain on permanent display in the hall. Chair of the committee, Olga Jamison explained the process involved. “We have commissioned a ‘Fine Art Conservator’ Mr. Jerzy Chlopicki of the Douglas Udell Gallery in Edmonton to work on cleaning and repairing the curtains to restore as much of their faded glory as possible. He will do the work in the hall starting with an opening reception on June 22 from 2-5 p.m. and we invite all those interested to stop in at
the hall that day.” Local County Councilor David Melenka notes, “My Gido and Baba, Jack and Jenny Malanka were among the founders of the hall. His Percheron horse business is one of the many depicted on the curtain and we want to pay our respect See Story.......................... Page 17
