May is Hearing and Speech month The Vegreville Elks and Royal Purple chapters were joined by Mayor Myron Hayduk on April 23 to proclaim May to be Hearing and Speech Month. Pictured are Vegreville Elks Lodge Exhalted Ruler Bob Bennett, and Royal Purple Past District Deputy Shirley Humble as well as retiring Honoured Royal Lady Shirley Preuss. The Royal Purple will be distributing collection boxes in various local businesses on April 29 for donations to the national Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children which looks after the needs of those with hearing and speech impairments, among other ailments. As hearing and speech impairments are often a hidden handicap in youth, funds are used for the purpose of consultations and testing with professionals as well as procurement of aids to daily living. Bunny Hop brings families together

Rosanne Fortier Hundreds of parents and children formed a kaleidoscopic Easter dream-land when they dotted Vegreville Social Centre at the Family Bunny Hop Dance on April 17.

DJ Jonathan Zabrick from Dusk ‘till Dawn DJ Services chose the kidfriendly music for the dancing.

In another section were crafts, games and physical activities that offered children chances to develop and learn. The CALS booth had a poster that

noted that movement and rhythm stimulate the frontal lobes of our brain and enrich language and motor development.

M.O.D.E.L project hosted a table with a modern bingo game. They called out an emotion and the participants had to match it to the face on the card. This is meant to get young people to understand what facial expressions are connected with which emotions. Later, they would speak to the kids about coping methods.

colorful craft projects which pertain to Easter were available.

Heather Sigglekow, Community Programmer for FCSS described this Annual Family Bunny Hop. “This event is a collaboration between several partners: ParentLink Centre, M.O.D.E.L Project, FCSS, CALS and Alberta Health Services.

“We gave free popcorn and water and we have a really cute carrot snack for the children. It’s a bag of carrots that looks like a carrot.

“We host events like this one because we want families to spend more quality time together and have fun together. It improves relationships.”

The Family Bunny Hop is always a successful event that has grown in popularity since it began; “families love it and we have lots of great volunteers to help put it on.” Sigglekow added.

The magnetism of Mark the Magician’s presence created an awe-inspiring afternoon for children when Vegreville Community Daycare presented Family Magic Show which was provided by Funtime Express and held at Vegreville Centennial Library on April 12.

Mark, who has 26 years of experience performing magic feats, initiated the show by requesting youngsters put up their hands if they thought they had a bit of magic

Keeping private information private Long-lost relatives in Nigeria e-mailing you about an unexpected inheritance? Perhaps the widow of a high-ranking government official is trying to leave the country with a large sum of money and you’ll receive a substantial fee for helping get it out? Tempting retirement plans, but the emails are simply a scam that would cost thousands of dollars of your hardearned money for nothing in return.

These types of messages are called phishing emails. The goal is to hook a big “fish” and get money out of the person.

The Nigerian scam emails are fairly easy to spot, and in fact, the ruse dates back to the days of fax and postal fraud. But recently, phishing artists have developed techniques that are much more convincing, and which might lead someone to believe the bank – or even the tax man – needs to verify some personal information.

A recent phishing e-mail informed recipients that the Canada Revenue Agency had outstanding tax refunds for them. To claim them, they were asked to provide a significant amount of my personal information to verify their identity, so the CRA could release the money.

Though such e-mail messages may, at first blush, seem authentic, attention to the details reveals the scam. In this case, the email bore the logo of the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency; the CRA and Customs have been separate entities for several years.

In any case, the CRA does not hand out money randomly, whether you’re owed a refund or not. But the tactic is just sophisticated enough that it might fool some unwary people.

The CRA will never ask for information via email. It is not

secure. For the same reason, H&R Block will not ask people to send their tax information via email.

Likewise, double-check email purporting to be from a bank. It’s easy to spot a phishing scam from an unfamiliar bank, but be suspicious of email from your own financial institution, too. Report any email purporting to be from your bank that asks for personal information. A bank will never ask for personal information in an email message.

If it seems too good to be true, it is usually a scam. Banks and government agencies do not randomly deposit money in your account.

If you have given up personal information in response to a phishing email, you may have provided details that can be used to steal your identity.

However, you can take steps to protect yourself from the financial damage of identity theft, and to prevent the possibility in the future: • Cancel any credit card you may have provided in response to the email.

• Contact credit bureaus Transunion and Equinox and make sure they f lag any unwanted activity on your credit history.

• Your Social Insurance Number and date of birth can be used to open bank and

credit card accounts. This information appears on the Notice of Assessment (NOA) you receive from the CRA with a summary of your tax return.

Keep your NOA in a safe place to protect this information.

And if you lose your NOA, you cannot request another copy from the CRA. It will provide information from the NOA to you but you only receive one copy, so keep it safe.

• If you move, inform the CRA as soon as possible. You do not want your tax documents to be accessed by other people.

• Getting rid of old tax documents can also be a security issue. You must keep your tax records for six years before you can throw them out. When disposing of your old tax returns, shred the pages to protect the information.

Shredders cost little and provide a great deal of protection.

Personal information is now far more valuable than ever before. Treat it just as you would any other valuable: keep it safe and private, and if you unwittingly release it, takes immediate steps to safeguard your finances and your identity.

This magic tool assisted Mark with his act of coloring an empty coloring book with these children’s crayons coloring in the air. The children soon gasped with awe as the empty coloring book was transformed into a book that became colored.

Additional acts followed which elicited laughter while it held the spectators spellbound.

Goodhand and Webb join Lakeland’s Board of Governors Lakeland College Submitted Lakeland College Board of Governors is back to a full complement thanks to the addition of two new public board members.

Linnea Goodhand of Lloydminster and Scott Webb of Vermilion were recently appointed to three-year terms on the board.

“We are pleased to welcome Linnea and Scott to our board. Both have diverse business backgrounds, strong community connections and previous board experience. I’m sure their input and viewpoints will be valuable as the board sets the direction for Lakeland’s second century of operation,” says Milt Wakefield, chair of Lakeland’s board.

Goodhand is a lawyer and operator of Goodhand Law Office. She has served on many boards in the non-profit sector and is currently a member of the Lloydminster and District SPCA board.

Goodhand also sits on Lloydminster City Council.

She and her husband Dale Beaudry are the parents of 20-year-old and 17year-old daughters. When they relocated to Lloydminster in 1998, one of the things that drew them to the community was the presence of a postsecondary institution.

“I don’t think we can underestimate the importance of Lakeland College in our area. It plays a vital role in the development of our young people,” says Goodhand. “I also appreciate the importance of the college in providing opportunities for mature students to make career changes, advance their

existing careers, or simply to take classes for the sake of expanding one’s horizons.”

Webb is a partner in Webb’s of Vermilion and manager of the company’s machinery division which has dealerships in Vermilion, Vegreville and Lamont. He is a long-time member of the Vermilion Rotary Club and has been involved in numerous community organizations such as minor hockey, Kinsmen and 4-H. His association with the college spans several decades. He took an agronomy course through agricultural sciences, taught a small business course for the business department, and has served on different college advisory committees. Webb and his wife Bernie’s youngest son starts university transfer courses at the Lloydminster campus this fall.

“The growth that we’ve seen at the college in the last seven years has been impressive and gratifying,” says Webb.

“As a new board member I know I have a lot to learn, but I hope to help contribute to the continued growth.”

That’s why the Association is holding a pre-Mother’s Day Home Business Show at Vegreville Centennial Library on April 27. Aside from being a chance to grab some great gifts for mom on her special day on May 11, the event is the first tradeshow fundraiser that the Preschool Association has held. Shannon Kerr, who is one of the vendors at the show, and Nicole Basarabowich, Fundraising Coordinator for Vegreville’s Preschool Association are the organizers for this sale.

Shoppers will be able to purchase a memorable gift item which includes knitted items, cooking essentials and novelties, jewellery, sachets, clothing, housecleaning supplies, spa treatments, body scrubs, shoes, dog-treats, homemade items, homemade Mother’s Day’s bouquets and more.

The vendors from this will all be home-based businesses from across the province that are coming out to offer up a series of solutions to make life a little easier for moms in Vegreville.

“This is one of the largest home-business tradeshows that Vegreville has ever done. There isn’t going to be one table that has the same items. We have over 40 vendors and I believe our sale grew to this size because everyone wants to support the kids in preschool. They have a great program and everyone wants to make sure it is around for years to come.” Basarabowich said.

Vegreville Chartered Accountants honoured for community and professional achievements ICAA Submitted Curtis Palichuk fca — a leader in the local business community and accounting profession — is one of three Vegreville-area Chartered Accountants being honoured with a 2014 Merit Award from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA). Merit Awards are bestowed upon Alberta CA’s who have made significant contributions to charitable and community causes, as well as to the CA profession.

Mr. Palichuk (Wilde & Company Chartered Accountants) is being awarded the Fellow of the Chartered Accountants (FCA) designation, the highest designation the profession bestows.

Fellowship is based meritorious service to the profession, community or achievements that have brought honour to the profession over a lengthy period of time.

Two other Vegreville-area Chartered Accountants— Kyle Bodnarchuk ca (Wilde & Company Chartered Accountants) and Shawn Warrington ca (Synergy Chartered Accountants)— are each receiving an Early Achievement Award. This award is given to CA’s who, within the first 10 years since qualifying as a CA, demonstrate excellence in professional, civic, charitable or community service.

Alberta’s search for new markets for energy resources should begin at home

Wayne Woldanski Reeve, Lamont County, Chair, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association Albertans expect the Government to have a strong focus on opening new markets for Alberta’s energy resources. This commitment was reinforced in the recent Speech from the Throne, the Budget, and is a key plank in the Building Alberta Plan. But the search

for new markets should begin right here in Alberta, by adding value to the resources we have.

To date, government efforts as well as public attention have revolved mainly around two projects: Keystone XL and Northern Gateway pipelines.

These pipelines are undeniably vital to Alberta’s energy sector and to every Albertan’s quality of life.

We depend on royalties from the sale of our energy resources for jobs, schools, hospitals and roads. Finance Minister Doug Horner is cautiously optimistic that this revenue source will grow but he is also aware global energy prices remain volatile.

In resource-rich Alberta, however, shipping our raw resources by pipeline is not the only way to generate value. The government can, and should, encourage processing more of our raw energy resources into higher value products in the province. Increased value-added energy production diversifies our economy, provides higher and stable revenue, and creates new and secure markets.

Alberta already has a wellestablished petrochemical industry. Its Industrial Heartland north east of Edmonton is actually the largest hydrocarbon-processing centre in the country.

East of Red Deer, Joffre is home to one of the world’s largest ethane-based factories in the world.

This industry is vital to the provincial economy, securing four to five times higher value for our energy resources.

Premier Peter Lougheed helped transform Alberta’s petrochemical industry in the 1970s with a number of policies to support a robust and long-term sector. Over the last 40 years more than $10 billion has been invested in Alberta’s petrochemical industry for products ranging from fuels, chemicals

and lubricants to detergents, plastics and synthetic fibres.

Today we encourage the provincial government to follow in the footsteps of the party’s founder and prioritize the growth of our valueadded energy production.

With proactive government policy and expanded infrastructure, we can transform Alberta into a global leader in innovation, advanced engineering and manufacturing as well as environmental stewardship.

Our province has tremendous potential.

The provincial government estimates reserves of 3,400 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, 58 billion barrels of natural gas liquids, and 423 billion barrels of oil are contained in the barely explored Duvernay, a vast shale formation in central and northwest Alberta. These reserves could easily double the feedstock supply for the petrochemical industry based in the Fort Saskatchewan and Red Deer areas.

A study commissioned by A lberta’s Industria l Heartland Association in 2013 found that adding value to Alberta’s energy

resources could increase the province’s gross domestic product (GDP) by $6 billion a year, add $1.8 billion a year in salaries, and increase provincial revenue by $600 million a year from corporate and personal taxes.

While we still want and need to ship our energy resources internationally, we can also create in-demand products for local, regional, and national markets that can be shipped by a variety of transportation methods.

Processing more of our energy resources at home also allows Alberta to reduce its environmental footprint and showcase its environmental standards as a secure supplier of clean energy products.

As the Government of Alberta contemplates a review of policies in support of more hydrocarbon processing, international companies are poised to invest billions of dollars. Other jurisdictions are competing for this investment, and the window of opportunity is closing.

A viable solution for our energy is as close as home.

The time to act is now.

After a very exhilarating and exciting season, the Mundare Girls Basketball Team won the EIPS Banner for the second time in three years!

From the seasoned and incredible veterans, to the rookies and the newbies, they “brought it” to every practice and game they played. Stuff an Ambulance an Easter hit Vegreville Emergency Services Submitted During the weekend of April 11 to 13th, 2014, Vegreville Emergency Services held their Fourth

annual “Stuff an Ambulance” event which collected non-perishable food items for the Vegreville Food Bank.

This event involved Emergency Services personnel collect-

ing food donations at No Frills, Vegreville Co-op and Wal-Mart.

Vegreville Emergency Services was grateful to the three grocery stores mentioned for their continuing support and contributions to this worthwhile event which happened in time for the Easter weekend for families in need.

Due to the tremendous support of citizens and the local businesses involved, this event was able to collect 1,606 pounds (730 Kilograms) of much needed food as well as $464.75 in cash donations. This was gladly presented to the Vegreville Food Bank on April 15.

Other kids rode on scooter boards, danced with hulahoops or got together for parachute play.

Tracy Laschowski, Student Success Coach said that the purpose of holding this event was to provide a free program for families during Spring Break that would encourage family togetherness, healthy relationships and physical activities.

Veg Auto and Industrial gets new owner, delivers same great service Michael Simpson Editor For Shawn Grykuliak, stepping into the role of owner of Veg Auto & Industrial Supply as owner is about more than just running a business, it’s about closing the loop on a childhood memory. “Ever since I was knee-high to a grasshopper I used to come here with my dad,” Grykuliak said. “I used to not be able to see over the counter.” Now, of course, he’s not only seeing clear across the counter, but he’s staring back at the likes of little boys who come into the store with their fathers now just like he did so many years ago. “This is more than a career to me, it’s a dream come true,” he said.

A former heavy duty mechanic and farmer himself, Grykuliak took over the store with a strong background in the very parts he sells. Veg Auto and Industrial is commonly known around town as “Bumper to Bumper” because of its longstanding

There’s a new problem or a new piece to find and a new solution to go with it every day. It’s the most excitement I’ve had.”

“This store is definitely the one-stop shop for agriculture, industrial and heavy truck needs in addition to automotive,” he said. “We definitely plan to continue to carry the wide range of agricultural, automotive

and industrial supplies that previous owner Marcel Bortnick built his customer base on for all those years.

And if we don’t have it, we’ll find it.”

For long-time customers, a new owner need not come with growing pains.

AHS program improves care for hip and knee patients AHS Submitted Albertans are waiting less time for hip and knee surgeries, and going home sooner after their procedures, since the launch of a province-wide Alberta Health Services (AHS) program designed to improve the quality and accessibility of orthopedic care.

“I would like to thank all of the front-line health care workers that have made these improvements to wait times possible through their dedication to patient care,” said Health Minister Fred Horne.

“As a government, we’re committed to improving the performance of our health care system and the recent update on hip and knee surgeries shows that we’re moving in the right direction. I’m sure this is welcome news for the many Albertans that have this type of surgery every year and are able to get back to their normal lives sooner because of this program.”

Kelly Anhelher is among the thousands of Albertans who have benefited from the Hip

and Knee Replacement Program. He says his quality of life has significantly improved since hip surgery last month.

“I could tell how much better it was as soon as I woke up,” said the 50-year-old.

“The surgery was scheduled quickly, the procedure went well and the recovery has been good. It has all been a very positive experience.”

The Hip and Knee Replacement Program has reduced the time between the decision to have surgery and the surgery date to 19.2 weeks, down 12 per cent or almost three weeks from when the program launched in 2010.

Over the same period, the average hospital stay for hip and knee patients has been reduced from 4.9 days for hip replacements and 4.6 days for knee replacements, to 4.1 days for both. Almost all patients returned to normal function for their age, indicating no ill effects from the shorter hospital stay.

The patient satisfaction rate has increased from 86 per cent to 98 per cent.

The rate of hospital readmission following surgery, already low at 4.3 per cent, has improved even further to 4.1 per cent.

“This program has far exceeded our goals,” said Dr. Don Dick, Senior Medical Director of AHS’ Bone and Joint Health Strategic Clinical Network, which operates the program.

“It really is a win-win project. We are always focused firstly on improving care for patients but we also need to ensure we get the best value for our health care dollars and help make our system sustainable. The hip and knee replacement program does both.”

Reductions in length of hospital stay have freed up about 33,000 days of hospital bed space since 2010, enabling AHS to perform more than 1,600 additional hip and knee surgeries with the same bed capacity. About 10,000 elective hip and knee replacements are performed annually in Alberta.

Agri-News Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development’s (ARD) popular “Blue Book” is on sale now and is also available as a free downloadable .pdf.

“The Crop Protection book, also known as the ‘Blue Book’ is updated annually and provides the most recent information on registered pesticide products,” says Gerard Vaillancourt, director, information management division, ARD, Edmonton.

“This year’s edition has new registrations and thousands of small updates that ensure Alberta producers are getting the best crop protection information possible.”

New this year is that the book is being offered as a free downloadable .pdf from ARD’s website, as well as for $12 in its traditional printed format.

“The $12 charge for the hard copy of the book is just to cover our costs in having the book printed,” says Vallincourt. “Since there are no printing costs associated with the .pdf, we can offer it free of charge.

“I think the hard copy book and the .pdf are really going to work well together,” says Vaillancourt. “The printed book is easy to read and very portable, while the .pdf version allows users to access the book through a computer, and is completely searchable.”

The Community Association for Lasting Success and Vegreville Preschool Association in partnership offer a first-rate Pre-Kindergarten program with child-development specialists, age-appropriate programs, equipment and resources.

“Preschool provides a place where your child can gain a sense of self, explore, play with their peers, and build confidence,” says Angela Caponoe, PhD in Childhood Development.

Katrina Sanford, Past President of Vegreville’s Preschool Association agrees with this quote when she explained why preschool is so important for young children. “Vegreville Preschool is a non-profit, community-based program.

It teaches children how to be students by interacting with

other children, their teacher and classroom support staff in a classroom setting. Preschool eases the transition of entering school. Children go into kindergarten already prepared, knowing what a classroom is like, what it is like to be with other students, knowing what is it like to have a teacher. It makes it easier to jump in and start learning.

We want to reduce anxiety about entering the classroom, so we offer Orientation Days where the child comes to the school with their parents to look at their classroom, meet new friends and see the toys.

They then know that it is a safe place where they can play with their new friends.”

CALS facilitates the Head Start early education portion of the Vegreville Preschool program. Children between 3 and 5 years of age who may be experiencing developmental delays, difficulties, or are English Language learners, maybe eligible for support through the Head Start program. The Head Start program also provides additional support to the classroom through staffing, resources, parenting programs, staff development, additional child development opportunities and curriculum implementation, development and support.

Dee Palichuk states that through the input of parents, professionals and by observing and understanding other

programs, such as the Montessori, Learn through Play, Creative Curriculum or the Reggio Emilia approach, the Vegreville Preschool program continues to evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of children and families in the community of Vegreville. She adds that the program engages resources, such as Speech Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, and Physical Therapists, as required, to benefit programming for all children.

Sanford states that the Vegreville Preschool program follows the kindergarten curriculum, adapting it to meet the learning needs of three to five year olds. The program is enriched by introducing fun, educational resources that support a child’s learning such as Mozart Math and Animated Literacy.

According to the Alberta Government, more than one

in four young children in Alberta are experiencing difficulties in development by the time they hit kindergarten. Research shows that children whose development is nurtured early in life are more successful in school, hold better jobs, and are physically and mentally healthier throughout their lives. Between 2009-2013, Kindergarten Teachers in Alberta completed Early Child Development mapping information that measured the development of kindergarten age children in five developmental areas: physical health and well-being; social competence; emotional maturity; language and thinking skills and communication skills and general knowledge.

“Although Vegreville scored higher than the provincial average in four of the five areas: physical health and well-being; social competence, emotional maturity, and com-

munication and general knowledge, there are still improvements to be made.

The Vegreville Preschool and Head Start programs are supporting children in these five areas of development through quality programming that offers: a curriculum aligned to kindergarten standards; low teacher-child ratios; engaged families and well educated teachers” states Palichuk.

Sanford and Palichuk are proud of their highly educated and well trained staff. “Our preschool is taught by an accredited teacher who has a Bachelor Degree in Education.

She is supported by two additional accredited teachers with Special Education and Elementary backgrounds.

The six educational assistants in the class, and each has at least a level 1 Child Care certificate. We have low child/teacher ratios, ensuring a minimum of one adult to every six children in the classroom. All staff participate in professional development training throughout the year.

They are constantly challenged to perfect their craft.”

Families are encouraged to participate on the governing boards, by assisting in the classroom and fundraising for the program. Staff communicate with families on an ongoing basis through Facebook, Celebration of Learning Days, formal and informal assessments, screening, evaluations, and displaying samples of the students’ works. The focus is on the development of the child and supporting their families. Children are introduced to the

Children are provided the opportunity to experience a variety of activities including: gymnastics, swimming, skating and library programming. The Pre-Kindergarten program is fortunate to be housed in the Vegreville’s Children Early Learning Centre which provides families access to programs, services and resources that support child development from birth to six years. This Centre also houses the Parent Link Centre.

The Vegreville Preschool Association is a non-profit organization that charges $700 a year for their Pre-Kindergarten program which amounts to $3.50 an hour.

Compared to Edmonton and Sherwood Park, this program is affordable as parents may be charged this fee monthly in larger centers. To help with the fee, there are subsidies available, the website is http://humanservices.alberta.ca/financialsupport/15104.html One preschool parent, Helen Adejare, offered a testimonial of her experience with having her son in this program.

“When we moved to Canada from the UK, I was worried about the education that my son would receive. The preschool impressed me because my child is four and he is already learning how to read.

He has surpassed what children are learning in Kindergarten. This is a result of the instruction that he is receiving at the Preschool. I’m impressed with what he is learning. People sometimes think preschool is just about playing. They do have the opportunity to socialize, but I am impressed with my son’s

Preschool parents support Helen’s testimonial as 71% of respondents to a recent survey,

stated that the Vegreville PreKindergarten programming is above average.

This Pre-Kindergarten program, for three and four year old children, will begin

to accept registrations for the 2014/2015 school year at their Annual General Meeting and Registration on April 23.

Preschool classes will begin on Tuesday, September 2.
