Support for Renaye Vegreville Composite High School showed support for their peer, Renaye Wade, who is currently in hospital fighting off the after-effects of a very serious vehicle collision that occurred over a month ago. Monday, April 15, 2013 marked a day in which friends and family asked that the people who heard Renaye’s story wear yellow, her favorite color, in order to send the young girl well-wishes. Many students and staff at the school participated in the day and sent their love to Renaye by creating a large heart made yellow by the color of the clothing they wore in support of the young woman. The players have different skill levels and one member is legally blind. The team did a fantastic job and finished undefeated!

Special thanks go to these players: Alex, Jeff and Preston for their great team work and sportsmanship. These three help setup other team members allowing them

to score. With the help of her team Jodi, who is legally blind, scored her first goal. Eli, Kylene, Janice, Blair, Peter and Rick, also played hard, allowing wins of 9-4 against the Calgary Storm, 12-3 against the Calgary Grizzlies and 109 against Olds.

The Pole Kats are also training for provincials in June.

Organizations involved with the arts, health, sports, environment, education, recreation, community development and social services rely on the passion and commitment of volunteers every day.

The Volunteer Week theme for 2013 is “Volunteers Cast a Beautiful Shadow� and it reminds us to consider the impact that volunteers have here. Volunteering is an active expression of your concern for the place you live or the world. Just pitch in and do what you can.

Volunteering can be as structured as working on a committee, or as

informal as just being a good neighbour. As well as contributing to their communities, people who volunteer can develop and improve their skills, explore their own strengths and interests, expand their network of neighbours and friends, and feel good about themselves.

During National Volunteer Week, I encourage everyone in Vegreville and district to stop for a moment and thank the many volunteers that make our community a great place to live, work or raise a family. Ask yourself what you can do to increase the ability of volunteers and voluntary organizations to positively impact our community.

Tax tips for single parents Eligible dependants: Single parents are allowed to claim the $10,822 the amount for an eligible dependant (sometimes referred to as equivalent to spouse) for one of their children as well as the $2,191 Child amount.

You have to support your child in a dwelling which you live in and maintain.

Joint custody: If there are two children and the parents share joint custody, then each parent can claim the equivalent to spouse amount for one child. But if you pay child support, you cannot claim this credit.

Child Tax Amount: In primary custody situations, you are the only parent allowed to claim the child tax amount. For joint custody, then you have to agree to which parent will claim this credit. If you can’t agree then no one will be able to claim it.

Child Tax Benefit: This benefit is calculated by your household income level so

the amount you receive depends on your earnings.

The rates and amounts vary by province but in general, if you earn more than $43,561, the CTB amount will decrease until it goes to zero at around $109,000.

There is also a supplement for lower-income families earning between $24,863 and $43,561. In joint custody situations, the benefit is split.

Child Support: If your agreement is dated after May 1, 1997 then child support payments are neither taxable nor deductible although you do need to report them on your tax return.

Child Activities: The Children’s Fitness Amount can be claimed by either parent but cannot exceed $500 in total per child.

Beginning in 2011, there is also a Children’s Arts Amount of up to $500 per child.

One lesson Ralph Klein’s successors would be wise to heed Gwyn Morgan Troy Media The fact that Alberta has had just three Premiers during my 35 year oil and gas industry career is a remarkable testimony to the stability of Alberta politics.

Unfortunately, there was little stable about the province’s revenues during much of that period. When Peter Lougheed became Premier in 1971, the world price for oil was just $3.60 (all prices in U.S. $) per barrel. The oil price rose slowly until the end of the decade, when it suddenly rocketed to $37 due to a

combination of Middle Eastern tension and OPEC activism. Spirits were high as investors returned to the sector.

Then, as fast as that optimism had risen, it was snatched away. October 28, 1980 is a date burned into my memory. That’s the day the Trudeau government introduced the National Energy Program (NEP); the most interventionist, confiscatory legislation in Canadian history.

Investors f led and the industry entered four years of NEP purgatory that ended with the signing of the Western Accord between the Mulroney and Lougheed governments on June 1, 1985.

Getty, oil prices began a precipitous collapse.

Don Getty was dealt a tough hand. Natural resource revenues plummeted from $4.3 billion to $1.6 billion in the first year of his tenure, leading to large deficits, exacerbated by his government’s failed attempt to diversify the economy by establishing crown corporations to invest in the hi-tech sector.

In the case of one of these money losing crown corporations, I sat on a volunteer board charged with stabilizing and selling the company. Ironically, the buyer was Nortel. By 1992, Getty’s last year in office, oil prices had moved up to $20 per barrel, but they were poised to drop continuously during the first

six years of his successor’s term, reaching $12 in 1998.

That was the financial legacy Klein inherited when he moved into the Premier’s office.

As a Calgarian, I had come to know Ralph during his years as the city’s immensely popular mayor.

But running the province, particularly one so far in the red, was quite a different prospect. And while the Getty government eschewed spending cuts in the hope that oil prices would come to the rescue, most Albertans had come to see that as a false hope.

Those of us running oil and gas companies knew we would just have to hunker down, cut costs and focus on survival. Would the folksy, populist Ralph Klein follow through on his campaign rhetoric and do the same? The answer came when Calgary’s University Hospital Board, of which I was Vice-Chair, was served notice that

funding would drop by a massive 20 per cent. This was in line with cuts to other public sector spending, but we never believed that health care spending would, or could, be cut that much.

It was in the implementation of that new reality that I learned much about Klein’s leadership philosophy. Rather than a bureaucratic, top-down approach to the cuts, he charged hospital boards and administrators with the responsibility of determining how best to deliver health care for less.

In Calgary’s case, we had to face the reality that two aged and inefficient hospitals were much more costly to operate than existing newer, underutilized facilities. There was a great outcry against closing the 40 year old General hospital, but Klein held his ground and supported our decision. The day the General came down, in one of the largest implosion demolitions in Canadian history, signaled our new Premier’s determination to bring his province back from the financial brink.

Klein’s approach to the province’s most important industry reflected the same treat-all-equally approach.

Formerly, each oil sands project had its own uniquely negotiated royalty terms. Provincial officials consulted with the industry and implemented generic terms, over the objections of some producers. Klein also simplified the conventional oil and gas royalty regimes and tied royalty rates to productivity, thus unleashing the recovery of formerly uneconomic reserves. His government assiduously avoided special deals.

Ralph Klein’s philosophy was basically that government sets the rules and industry plays the game, which provided a vital component of stability in an industry subject to risks that include commodity prices, market access and cost escalation.

These are lessons his successors would be wise to heed.

Cooking up jazz!

Rosanne Fortier Don Harfield Elegance and style amid an audience of 86 filled the comfy atmosphere of Vegreville Train Station on April 7 during the performance of The Cookers featuring double-bass Bassist Alex Coleman, Mayor Richard Coleman’s son. Perogies and Jam, in collaboration with Wendy Brook Festival were pleased to host this polished band from Toronto while the

audience welcomed Alex to his home town for this event.

While in town, they also conducted a workshop at Vegreville Composite High School to about 30 music students.

In the beginning of the evening, the audience was treated to a savory supper buffet provided by owner of restaurant and venue, Ellen Dunn. While eating, the audience listened to four local talented young people perform

including Barbara Rybchuk (piano, saxophone), Christina Nawrot (piano), April Siggelkow (vocals), and Tobin Fell (piano). Music teacher Colleen Albert provided piano back-up for the vocals.

The Cookers played a wellbalanced blend of blues, soul and jazz to a delighted and engaged audience. The show commenced with an energy level that was palpable while a rhythmic engine seemed to be cruising through the venue.

The band continued to maintain a gentle but vital energy with a steady bass. When completed, the audience whistled while they issued applause.

Within a few minutes, another tune emerged with a syncopated sizzle as the beat continued on in a unique manner. Romantic music with a warm tone came on also, which seemed to radiate like a sunset.

There was music featured with a titillating mood that added a feverish pitch to the rhythm.

There were other music performances and some of these were blended in a way that made the audience get off their seat and strut around.

The Cookers consists of trumpeter Tim Hamel, saxophonist Ryan Oliver, pianist Richard Whiteman, bassist Alex Coleman and drummer Joel Haynes. All of these musicians teach and perform on a regular basis in Toronto.

They played two sets including 7 of their own compositions which were Obligatory Blues by Alex Coleman, four numbers (Mudbug Shuff le, For You, The Sheriff and The Ramble) by Ryan Oliver, and Vegreville Forever by Tim Hamel. The audience rose to their feet at the end of the evening for a standing ovation, to which The Cookers went right in with a tune called H.F.P. written by Tim Hamel. They also performed jazz greats Bobby Timmons (Moanin’), Bernie Miller (Bernie’s Tune), and Horace Silver (The Preacher). You can go to their website for additional information.

The evening was an opportunity to experience the engaging complexity of harmony which gives jazz its distinctive genre or musical language. The many variations of harmony (musical color) added to the depth and character of the primary theme with the musicians each having the freedom to improvise within the typical 12 bar structure of the piece.

Mayor Richard Coleman said that he enjoys jazz and classical music. “We don’t get a whole lot of this type of music in Vegreville. Also, it’s nice to see my son, Alex, perform over here. We supported him all the way through his music since he was young, and then when he went on to

University and beyond. He competed in two Wendy Brook Festivals with Peter Lien.”

After Alex attending music school initially in Red Deer, he attended the Nanaimo Music School under the tutelage of his uncle Pat Coleman, a well known jazz guitarist. It was in Nanaimo that Alex first met Ryan Oliver in 1999, who, a year later, moved to Toronto. Ryan started playing with Tim Hamel and then

added Richard Whiteman and Alex to their core group over the next few years. Joel joined the group about a year ago and for the last four years; they have been meeting and performing weekly in a Toronto jazz club. When asked what advice he would give to aspiring young musicians, Alex recommended having a dedication and rever-

ence for jazz masters and follow your passion in music.

The Cookers came to Vegreville as part of their western Canadian tour partially funded by the Canada Council of the Arts and included performances in Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Salmon Arm, Vancouver, Kamloops, Nanaimo and Victoria.

VCHS Science Olympics wins bronze!

Vegreville Composite High School entered a team in the Edmonton and Area Science Olympics in March.

Teacher Max Latte led the team including Duncan Giebelhaus, Jason Chow, Bayley Sapara, Jillian Rogers, and Cole Chilibecki in the competition. Two challenges were completed

prior to the Science Olympic event; identifying a type of moss based on the microorganisms found in it, and building a remote control submarine that was capable of maneuvering through obstacles in a tank of water.

The team won a bronze medal in the telescope making challenge, where they

had to view an eye chart though a telescope that they constructed out of paper and supplied lenses. The team is excited to to build off this success to be even stronger for the 2014 Edmonton and area science Olympics.

As members of the Myrnam 4H Multi Club, Jade and Makayla were both considering doing speeches on ‘Women in Sports’. Even though Makayla is an inter-

mediate member and Jade is a senior, they chose to collaborate and modified their topic with the result being a presentation entitled “Your Stomach Shouldn’t Be a Wastebasket”.

They placed first in Senior at club level which gave them an opportunity to advance to Two Hills District Communications.

Also a member of the Myrnam club, MJ Wowk placed first in Senior for his speech entitled ‘It’s Getting Cold in Here’, advancing

him to District Level.

At the completion of the District Event on March 2, held in Myrnam, all three had once again earned first place in their respective categories. This meant they moved on to Regionals!

Hosted by Vermilion River District on March 9, Regionals proved to be challenging as there are many competent speakers, all vying for the first place title. In both categories of Senior Speeches and Presentations, two winners are chosen to represent the Northeast 4H region at Provincial Communications.

And that’s exactly where MJ, Makayla and Jade went, travelling to Olds on April 6 to speak off against members from six other regions.

Central Taxi organized for Hooper to host an auction and have his band play at the event. The auction was for fundraising money and the Community Association for Lasting Success and the Vegreville PreSchool Association were invited to take part in the event and use a share of the profits. The Community Association for Lasting

Success—C.A.L.S.—is a non-profit organization that provides support to families and offers programs that help in the well-being and development of children.

Similarly, the Vegreville PreSchool Association also aids in the children’s development.

The PreSchool Association offers families a service that allows young children to learn and prepare themselves for entering their Kindergarten experience.

Both are valuable services that enrich the community of

Vegreville by giving families with young children assistance in the important first years of their children’s lives.

Danny Hooper is quite wellknown for a variety of things including being a fundraiser, auctioneer, recording artist, business and motivational speaker, master of ceremonies and award winning radio personality. Regardless to say, with Danny Hooper’s experience and the effort of everyone involved, the event successfully gathered a good amount of funds that will

help support some very appreciated organizations in Vegreville.

Dee Palichuck of C.A.L.S. stated that in regards to what their share of the proceeds will go towards, it will mostly help pay for operational costs and the family literacy program. The event consisted of a supper, dance and a live auction, making for not only a successful fundraiser but also an enjoyable experience for all those in attendance.

Moisture situation update Ralph Wright Agriculture and Rural Development Generally north of Red Deer, cooler than normal temperatures over the past month, combined with late October snows, above normal winter snow accumulations and recent snow storms, have resulted in a slow start to spring and deep lingering snow packs. Looking back over 52 years, current snow packs as of April 7th generally range from 1 in 3-6 year highs north of the TransCanada highway, grading to 1 in 6-12 year highs through the eastern parts of the Special Areas, in and around the City of Edmonton, and as well, through many parts of the Peace Region.

Snow packs are estimated to be near 1 in 50 year highs in and around the Swan Hills and also in parts of the MD of Clear Hills. Province wide, soil moisture reserves under the snow packs are tend to be normal to below normal, however; soil temperatures at the surface are generally near the freezing mark, suggesting that these soils are ready to absorb more snow melt water than they would normally take in during a typical spring melt.

• Current snow packs across many areas are albeit high relative to average, but when compared to snow packs over the past 50 years, are not unprecedented. For example, looking at a few of the high snowfall areas, through the Special Areas snow packs on April 7th were deeper in 1985, 1982, 1975, 1974, 1971, 1969, 1967 and 1965. Currently, it is estimated that more than 40 mm of water is present in the snows in this area, with 1974 being the highest snow year (120 mm water), followed by 1967, 1971 and 1975 all having more than 100 mm of water in the snow packs. Similarly around Edmonton, another high snow fall area, the current snow pack is estimated to contain about 125 mm of water, making it the 8th deepest snow pack looking as far back as 1961. In comparison, over this same period 1974 was the biggest snow year, containing approximately 220 mm of water.

• A slow start to spring melt has resulted in moderately high snow packs across most of the province, north of the TransCanada highway. Several of these areas experience snowpack this deep at this time of year, on average only 1 in 6-12 years, including Edmonton and surrounds, parts of the Special Areas, and parts of the central Peace

Region.

• Unusually deep snow packs are persisting throughout the Swan Hills (1 in 50 year highs) and throughout the M.D of Clear Hills (1 in 25-50 year highs).

Perspective • Many may be thinking that snow packs of this magnitude, lingering this long are highly unusual. In fact, while they are abnormal, they are not unprecedented. Looking back over the past 50 years, several years rank higher that the current year for most areas, with the exception of the Swan Hills and parts of the MD of Clear Hills.

• Over the past several years, above average temperatures and in many cases below average snow packs have clouded our memories with respect to what we are seeing today. That being said, there is still a lot of snow to melt and we are still only in April.

• Snow storms during this month are not uncommon and it’s still very much a wait and see situation.

• On April 5th, several stations throughout southern Alberta recorded air temperatures in excess of +15 C. In contrast, on this same day some areas in the northern Peace Region saw the mercury dip to well below -25 C.

Cookers Alex Coleman sizzles with talent Rosanne Fortier Alex Coleman is the Town of Vegreville Mayor Richard Coleman’s son. He grew up in Vegreville. Now, Alex resides in Toronto. He is a jazz musician and bassist from the band – The Cookers, which is a Toronto – Based Jazz Band.

From hearing Alex perform, he brings so much passion into his work. His music can have a gentle tone at times when needed, for example on romantic pieces. But, it is usually vital with incredible energy

that circulates around the venue.

He remembers starting off with this profession at a young age. “My first memory of music in general is listening to Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on vinyl, sitting in the basement with huge earphones on. I must have been about three or four years old. As for playing music, it would be when my Uncle Pat Coleman (one of Canada’s finest jazz guitarists) visited one time when I was really young, maybe five. He

had his guitar with him, and we plugged it into something, and I sat down and played - in the loosest sense of the word for awhile!” Alex said.

“I took up the piano at age six, studying under Bob Harrison. I studied piano music from seven to twelve years of age. This was usually in the Classical genre. I don’t recall my first piece, but remember learning basic pieces, Beethoven Bach etc…”Alex went on to mention. “Piano was mostly positive, except

when I didn’t practice enough for lessons! Then again, it helped that my parents were always supportive of my lessons.”

“When I was young, Vegreville had no school music programs, so all lessons were separate. The Wendy Brook Festival was my first exposure to performing in front of an audience. With this, my first time was very nerve-wracking!

and learn the pieces.” Alex explained.

Alex continued on to described how in the past, the Community of Vegreville wasn’t as fortunate to have music instructions like we do today. “Well, there wasn’t a huge music community per se, just because Vegreville was so small at the time. But my parents encouraged me to practice, and a close family friend of my mother’s, who was a piano instructor in Edmonton, was also very encouraging.”

“I got into bass when I was about 12 or 13. Some friends in town had guitars and drums, but nobody played bass, so that’s how I first got turned onto it. Double bass I picked up at about age 19 when I was studying music on Vancouver Island and Malaspina College (now Vancouver Island University)” Alex has a Bachelor of Music degree and he teaches intermittently, though he said it hasn’t been a huge focus for him. “I currently have a couple of private students, and I also teach at a private school in Toronto, when they have bass students.” Alex explained.

“My favorite genre of music is jazz, especially from the 50’s and 60’s. The music of that era, to me, has a great feel to it, lots of energy. Some of my favorite artists are John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Paul Chambers, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Clark,” Alex added.

Alex included his favorite part of listening/performing music. “The passion and intensity of my favorite recordings is always important to me, and is something I always aspire to in my performance. The circle of musicians I perform with most often embody this fiery intensity.”

He described what it is like to be in front of an audience performing music. “It depends on the context of course. But performing in clubs where people are there to hear your music, or at least your style of music, I always have a good time. Sometimes I forget the audience is there! Being a sideman is great for me – I’m not the best front-man around!

“I can blend into the background and keep focused on working with the band to help get a good sound. I am occasionally a leader – which I’m

getting better at – it’s always been tough for me to stand in front of people, talk between tunes, organize all the music and musicians – but it’s definitely fun.”

He went on to explain the artists/performers he is most influenced by. “First and foremost, my Uncle Pat Coleman (guitar) made an impression on me. I studied and performed with him a lot when I was younger – and still plan on performing with him in the future. His influence is almost immeasurable – he’d never mince words, but always had great advice, is a great teacher, and taught me so much about music, a life in music, and a different perspective than I was used to while growing up in rural Alberta. Bassists Charles Mingus, Paul Chambers, and Ray Brown.

Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax) and even the band mates I’m on tour with right now, they each have something different that I aspire to.”

When asked how it felt to perform in his hometown of Vegreville, Alex replied, “I’ve only performed once in Vegreville, back in about 1997 with a rock band. I’ll be interested to see how people respond to the music we are bringing.

It’s not the most popular form of music, but what we do play is something that even the uninitiated can enjoy. Our two front-men write great tunes that aren’t overly heady, and they’re affable guys that can really relate to a crowd!”

Alex divulged what makes a person successful in the field of music; “Study, study, study.

Be a good human being: kindness, understanding, humility, etc. These are all things I’ve had to work on in one way or another – and some of my favorite musicians that I have performed with are guys that live their lives this way.”

“Music is a hard career, but the great experiences far outweigh the bad. I’ve met some amazing people along this path. My bandmates in this group are a great bunch of folks, amazing musicians, and really fun to be around!

Writing, recording, and performing music across the country is a huge challenge, but something I’ve never regretted. Even having the opportunity to think about all the questions for this interview gives me a chance to pull my head out of the proverbial sand for a minute, forget about the difficulties, and reflect on all the positive experiences and people I’ve met!”

MJ, a veteran speaker at Provincial events, walked away with the coveted first place title, earning himself a spot at The Canadian Young Speakers for Agriculture in Toronto during Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in November 2013.

Jade and Makayla were proud to tie for third place in Presentations, especially considering this was their very first time competing in a Provincial competition.

To celebrate the 100th year of 4H in Canada, FCC and 4-H Canada planned a special Centennial Public Speaking event held in Olds on the same day.

Prizes of $500 were awarded to each winner in Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories. Entrants were to prepare a speech with an Agricultural focus.

Speaking from the Two Hills District were Maria Taschuk, Cristina Weibe, and MJ Wowk. MJ was lucky enough to be awarded Honourable Mention.

Congratulations to all of them for showing their 4H

spirit and dedication.

SIRACKY, Leonard February 8, 1938 – April 13, 2013 After 26 years, Leonard (Len) Marshall Siracky lost his battle with cancer at the age of 75 years.

Leonard is survived by his loving family, his wife of 55 years, Antoinette (Toni); three daughters Chris (Lance), Louise (Ron) and Carmen (Nick); four grandchildren, Nicole (Kurt),Cody (Chantelle), Jamie (Leah) and Lane. Len was blessed with one great granddaughter Charli; sisters Phyllis and Josie and his brother Laddie; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Len was predeceased by his parents Mike and Annie; one sister Lorraine and one brother Henry.

A Prayer Service was held on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Mundare, Alberta where a Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial was also held on Friday, April 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m.

The Vegreville U18 Boys played in the 2013 Slush and Polar Cups in Edmonton. The Slush Cup was on March 1-3 and the Polar Cup was held December 28-30 and came home with a silver medal in the Slush Cup and a gold medal in the Polar Cup. Good job boys! Bantam-aged athletes’ goals move forward at Alberta Cup tryouts Rosanne Fortier Athletes manifested fierce determination as they raced for the puck during Alberta Cup tryouts in Vegreville on March 29, 30 and 31. Sean Beissel, Head Coach led the first skill building session. With this, he wrote and drew instructions on a board, described how to make a good pass, told the players what skills they needed to be a good player while he narrated these tips and informed them what to do when he blew his whistle. He also asked questions while giving the young men problems to solve. There were physical exercises available also.

Garv Fesyk, Director of Operations for the northeast zone camp explained, “I volunteer to do this because hockey is my passion, which I still participate in. This is an open tryout camp for 1998born athletes, which is sponsored and run by Hockey Alberta, with Alberta Treasury Branch being our main sponsor this year. We start this off with two skill-building sessions on the ice to get the players’ legs underneath them.

It’s basically a practice session that we do because the players are nervous and excited when they begin so this helps to make them feel more comfortable. Next, there are three games to prove themselves on the ice.”

“Team selection will be facilitated by each zones team coach. Every player receives an equal opportunity to make the team. Selection will be based on what a player achieved during the selection weekend and not what the player did during

In other words, this short term competition requires performance on demand.

The highlight is seeing the boys come away with an educational and positive experience. It’s not just about hockey, also we want our guys to make new friends and develop social skills. Hockey Alberta gives equal application and everyone receives consistent communication,” Fesyk said.

“There are 102 players trying out for this team and only 20 are selected. As participants go on to the Alberta Cup tournament, it keeps getting tougher and tougher. As our coach said, “We’re looking for players who are willing to compete, have determination, good work ethics, and natural skill. It’s more than being a hockey player; we’re looking for good people also.” Fesyk informed.

These tryouts are all run by volunteers. Garv Fesyk is the Director of Operations. The Coach Mentor is Serge Lajoie,

ers. Hockey Alberta wants to develop the athletes, coaches, trainers, DOP, and officials.

“They are a management company with only a few employees in the Red Deer main office,” Fesyk said, “The northeast team that gets chosen will travel to Strathmore in April to compete in the Alberta Cup tournament, which is a stepping stone to the level of hockey for the World Junior, etc. Also, a lot of players from Northeast go on to the Western Hockey League or College Hockey. These tryouts could be the onset of a lucrative career. We are still leading in this game because the Northeast Zone won in 2012.

Overall, this area has won the Alberta Cup Tournament more than other zones.”
