Vegreville Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 39 presented a commemorative ceremony to honor the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge at the Vegreville Cenotaph

on April 9.

Prior to the ceremony, the March on the Colors paraded from the Legion to Vegreville Cenotaph.

The ceremony was followed by O’Canada, last post, and two minutes of silence.

00:05 RCMP attempted to stop a black Chevy truck at a local business in Vegreville. The vehicle did not stop and the incident is still under investigation.

11:28 A female reported that a family member had killed her horse and alleged that the person had previously threatened that she would kill her horse and feed it to coyotes. At the moment, her horse is missing. Members were unable to locate the horse and the incident was referred to the SPCA. 13:11 Report of a vehicle collision at a parking lot. The vehicle had been backed into but no injuries were reported.

13:55 Report of twenty missing pigs.

The caller believes that they may have been stolen. The caller was looking after the farm and he arrived to an empty corral. RCMP were able to locate four of the pigs on the neighbouring farm and they cried wee, wee, wee all the way home.

18:44 A female reported that a male was continually offering her rides and alcohol. His advances were unwanted and the RCMP issued a warning to the male.

20:22 Report of a suspicious voicemail where a loud voice and heavy breathing was heard. The caller was unknown.

22:41 Report of a vehicle theft from Mundare. The keys were left in the vehicle. RCMP were unable to locate the vehicle.

04:07 RCMP responded to an alarm at a local gas station. The window was broken but the property was not entered.

07:21 Report of a traffic collision between a semi-truck and a small car.

The driver of the car had minor injuries. The driver of the semi-truck admitted to falling asleep at the wheel.

He woke up to pushing the car sideways across the highway.

08:40 A member on patrol queried a licence plate and found that the driver was suspended and so the vehicle was towed.

13:37 Report of threats to a cable installer. The resident remarked that she would have the installer shot by her toddler should he ever come back. RCMP attended and there were no guns found in the home.

14:24 Report of a male parked across from a residence for three hours. The male was found to be using the open Wifi signal in the area. RCMP warned the individual for littering cigarette butts on the ground. The Wifi is now password protected.

14:59 A female was recognized by police and arrested for outstanding warrants.

A small amount of illegal drugs were located on her person.

15:20 Report of a break and enter to a residence. The door was broken but the only thing taken was twenty dollars’ worth of change.

16:27 A pedestrian reported that he was almost hit by a driver in a crosswalk.

No vehicle identification was given.

18:02 Report of debris on the off-ramp of highway 16. Upon investigation, there was no debris found.

18:15 Report of a female driver drinking while driving. Members located the vehicle parked at a residence with no one inside. The owner of the vehicle was visibly impaired but claimed to have started drinking at the residence.

20:42 Report from a local gas station of a person leaving without paying for fuel. Police checks said that the car was also stolen. Patrols were made but the vehicle was not located.

April 4 01:07 The previous caller called back and advised that she had rented out her vehicle and that it had not been stolen.

07:57 Report of a tractor trailer that had gone off the highway and into the ditch. The driver stated that he had lost control and had gone off the highway. No injuries and no damage was reported.

17:35 Report of an elderly resident with dementia who left her home and had not returned. The resident returned before members attended.

April 5 01:00 Report that a male had put a rifle into his vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was questioned and after consenting to a search, nothing was located.

07:56 Report of a two-vehicle collision.

A vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign.

No injuries, however, violation tickets were issued for failing to stop.

17:43 RCMP initiated a traffic stop for a speeding vehicle that was going 158 kph in an 110 kph zone. The driver was

April 7 06:49 Report of a domestic assault between a male and his girlfriend.

RCMP attended and the male was arrested.

09:25 Report of a driver using a cell phone and swerving from side to side.

The vehicle was located, however, no cell phone was found so the driver was issued a warning.

11:26 Report of a request for a wellbeing check from a local employer. The employee was later found to still be in hospital.

12:00 Report of ongoing neighbour issues in Lavoy. The resident was upset because the neighbour’s cat kept jumping on her bird feeder. Member mediated the situation.

12:46 A female reported being assaulted by another female and sustained a shattered shoulder. The female was arrested for aggravated assault.

14:03 Report of a furnace company overcharging an account. All the payments through the bank were stopped. Still under investigation.

16:10 Report that a culvert had been removed from the middle of the road. Public Works had been advised.

22:32 Report of a neighbour uttering threats after a neighbour was making too much noise. RCMP mediated the situation.

April 8 08:13 Traffic stop resulted in a driver having outstanding warrants.

07: 55 Report of an angry beaver at the drive-through at Tim Hortons. Members attended and found a large beaver that was aggressive. Members were able to usher the beaver to a local waterway. No beavers or employees of Tim Hortons were injured during the incident.

16:37 Report of a female who had collapsed after taking pills. RCMP and EMS attended and the female was taken to hospital.

22:13 Report of a semi in the ditch on highway 16. The driver said he was cutoff and lost control. No injuries or damage.

April 9 08:50 Report of elder abuse. The caller believes the family member may be the victim of elder abuse after loaning someone $60,000. The alleged victim refused to speak to the RCMP. 22:41 Report of a domestic dispute.

Members attended and found one of the parties breaching multiple conditions and so was arrested.

During the week 4 false 911, 3 false alarms, 1 animal collision and 61 calls for service were made in total.

A matter of balance

Joe Machney Reporter Throughout our life we are seeking balance. In today’s Western lifestyle it is easy to see this within society, but from another perspective, this outward manifestation of our reality is a mirror to our own inner world and imbalance within us.

This is the importance of relationships in one’s life. They are there to show us what we do not have in ourselves and areas that we need to grow to become whole and complete.

The balance is what we are after. In general, both men and women express either more masculine traits or more feminine traits or qualities in their day to day societal existence.

This is part of the reason why there is a particular attraction to a certain type of man or woman. The emotional, psychological, and spiritual pieces that the other needs to grow and evolve can be offered through the interaction with each other.

When looking at relationships from this perspective, it takes a load off the heart should the relationship no longer be working or feel dead to one or both partners. The contract or agreement between the two souls has served its purpose and it is time to move on. But try telling your heart that!

There is a part of yourself that is your higher mind and it is connected to the spirit that is within everything in existence. This part of yourself is your guide and in times when your heart aches, it can council you and assist with your

healing. Like a child that does not understand the ways of society, your higher mind can offer wisdom to help you whenever outside resources cannot heal the pain you are going through.

In those times it is there to teach you that the balance that you seek is not outside yourself. The people you have been intimate with were in your life to show you parts of yourself as well as to show you love, the most important element in

existence. The pain that your head and heart experience are colors on a painting that when you have taken in enough and can let it go and walk away, you will see the true message that will reveal itself to you. It is your choice to do this though.

Your heart and your mind are young and need patience and guidance. Take the high road and see all of your experiences in your life as good, bad or whatever other label you choose to place on them. From the higher mind they are none of these things, they just are, and our lesson is this life through all the people we meet, tears we cry, laughs we share, love we express, is to just let it be and only take action when we are prompted to do so through subtle hints and nudges; to be the watcher, like of a movie.

Life is not meant to be difficult, it is meant to be enjoyed; be colorful and full of so many flavors and experiences that when it comes time for you to leave you can do so with a smile, thinking what a wonderful life I created for myself.

By understanding that you truly create your own reality and that everything in your life will eventually balance out, you will become whole and complete within yourself. The people that have come and gone were your teachers, like you were to them. These roles go back and forth and in the end, everything returns to the balance that it was in the beginning, the return to spirit.

Clerks, but not the movie Sgt Jerry Nutbrown RCMP Ponderings We have some pretty important people that we work with here and if you have come in or called, you’ve likely talked with them. Our detachment clerks number 4 in total, but one of them spends half her time on Community Peace Officer duties (which includes putting up with Ken). Experience they possess ranges from 1.5 years to 35 years, so when you need something, just know the experience and skills they have varies. All these folks in our office are from the area and are the solid foundation of information that is key to detachment continuity. As our members transfer throughout their careers, the most stable factor in our office is the clerical or support staff. In our case, the federal government pays for 1 position and the town pays for the other 3. Our clerks are all required to have the same security clearance level as the regular members do as they have access to all the same information.

Their job titles are deceiving as they

indicate nothing of what our clerks do for their day-to-day work. To think they merely answer phones and take messages is so very far from the truth. Yes, they perform what typically is referred to as clerk type duties, but they do so much more and are invaluable to our detachment as are any clerks to their respective detachments. As an Auxiliary Constable back when I started with the RCMP, I learned from regular members to be good to the clerks and treat them well. This is advice that gets passed to our newly hired members and it doesn’t take long for them to figure out why.

So, besides typical clerical duties, what are their other responsibilities? They handle the purchasing, and facilitating the purchasing, of almost everything we need and then the follow-up computer work to account for it so it just needs a covering signature. They also handle our court duties and tasks that are related. We have a clerk in court every week assisting the Crown Attorneys with files and often

2017 budget a relief for small firms CFIB In responding to the 2017 Federal Budget, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) noted that small business owners will be relieved to learn there are no measures to raise taxes on capital gains or small business income in 2017.

“We’re relieved by what we didn’t see in this budget, but small business owners will be concerned that several key tax measures for independent businesses are under active review,” said CFIB president Dan Kelly. These include the personal and capital gains

tax treatment of businesses where several family members are involved.

The biggest negative for entrepreneurs and employees is a projected 3% increase in Employment Insurance (EI) rates in 2018. “The payroll budgets of every business and the take home pay for Canadian workers will now drop for 6 straight years, with an EI hike in 2018 and 5 years of CPP premium hikes starting in 2019,” Kelly noted.

On the positive front for small business owners, CFIB noted: Several investments in skills building programs; A new procurement initiative to support innovative entrepreneurs; A review of measures to allow less costly transfers of businesses to family members; and Measures to make it faster and easier to

employ foreign workers.

“We applaud measures in the budget to help build skills levels and the labour force available to employers,” said Dan Kelly. “We hope this will include a pathway to permanent residency for foreign workers with lower skills levels.

In addition, we’re thrilled the government is considering changes to allow transfers of businesses to family members, recommended by CFIB and the subject of two recent private members’ bills from the Liberals and NDP.” While the budget has no major new overall spending initiatives, small business owners remain highly concerned with the size of deficits and debt.

“Concern over government deficits has risen to become the number two issue

for CFIB members, just behind the total tax burden,” Kelly said. “We urge the government to introduce a plan to get back to a balanced budget and deliver on their election promise to reduce the small business tax rate to 9% by 2019.”

90 Years Ago – April 13 1927 C.I. Ennis of the Vegreville Dairy has purchased three head of pure bred Ayrshire cows at Lacombe and also three head of pure bred Holsteins. He has acquired 20 acres of land half a mile west of town and plans to build a dairy barn and good house there this summer.

He expects to be able to supply town customers with either pasteurized or raw milk. His cows are all tubercular tested and with them as a nucleus he can build up a fine dairy herd.

The provincial government, it is learned here have purchased eighty acres of land adjoining its present demonstration farm from Blakely Barton, at a price in the vicinity of three thousand dollars.

The acreage is under cultivation and produced last year fortyseven hundred bushels of wheat. The government farm now will comprise four hundred acres besides half a section under rent. It is the aim of the authorities to make the holdings as nearly self-sustaining as possible.

A very disastrous fire occurred at Haight on the night of April 8th when the Hardware Store of Fobes Bros. and the Haight General Store, owned and operated by Willian Nebozenko and Alex Lastiwka, were destroyed.

75 Years Ago – April 15, 1942 If we don’t vote “YES” on April 27th, we may wake up some morning to discover that the Plebiscite was the last popular vote in this country. We may find that the Japs and the Nazis made bold because Canadians were not willing to vote for total war at a time when any other kind of was is mere temporizing, have moved in and taken us over.

The Salvage Committee wishes to express their thanks to Messrs.

Muzyka and Tunis for the use of their window to display samples of was salvage. House holders are invited to look this over. It will tell them what is wanted and how it should be prepared.

Corporal Chris Berlid RCASF of Dodds was home on leave from Camrose Training Centre recently.

Harry Semeniuk of New Kiew was home for Easter from Camrose, but the leave was short …way to short for Harry.

Two elevators were burned out at Kitscoty on Tuesday night and the west-bound train was neld there for about three hours while the tracks were being cleared.

50 Years Ago – April 13, 1967 Two members of the All Star Pee Wee team, Pee Wee Baseball Champions of Alberta last year were presented with the Pee Wee Championship Plaque last Wednesday evening. Alberta Baseball Association Director Joe Goshko made the presentation to Curtis Shokopies, team captain, and Ambrose Micklich, a member of the team.

The fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge was observed in Vegreville on Saturday night by veterans, members of the Canadian Legion and friends at the Legion Hall in the form of a banquet program and dance arranged by the Vegreville Branch of the Legion.

The annual meeting of the Mundare CWL was held on Wednesday, April 5th at the Mundare St. Mary’s Directory. The new CWL executive for 1967-68 are: President, Mrs. Jeanette Dobush; first vicepresident and education convener, Mrs. Norma Seleny; second vice-president and publicity, Mrs. Anna Koren; third vice-president and membership, Mrs. Florence Kucherawy; secretary, Mrs. Sophie Dmytryk; social welfare and citizenship, Mrs. Marianne Ilkiw; spiritual, Mrs. Berry Ruzycki; national magazine, Mrs. Frances Soleski; social convenors, Mrs. Mary Kachurowski, Mrs. Jennie Kucherawy and Mrs. Emily Dziwenka.

25 Years Ago – April 14, 1992 Vermilion billiard player Jody Thorton represented Landmark Billiards in the Fufferin-Tassle Canadian Eight Ball Tournament in Toronto recently. He was one of 12 contestants playing for $10,000 in prize money. He placed fifth and won $600.00.

Lois Gregory donated blood over 75 times to the Red Cross. She received a pin from Tilly Shavchook of the Vegreville Order of the Royal Purple to commemorate the occasion. Lois first gave blood in the early 40’s in Vegreville and has been a consistent donor since.

Vegreville’s own West View Motel and Wild Rose Inn have both received housekeeping awards for 1991. They join the ranks of 36 other Alberta motels who received the Alberta Housekeeping Awards for 1991.

Elk’s of Canada history books highlighting 75 years of Elkdom (1912-1987) were distributed to local libraries recently by historian, brother Frank Shemko and publicity director, brother Steve Kuchik.

A copy of the book was presented to; Vegreville St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Vegreville Long Term Care Centre, chamber of commerce, medical centre, Vegreville Composite High School, St. Mary’s School, Vegreville Clinic, Elks Hall and the Vegreville Public Library.

Legion Branch No. 39 located in Vegreville hosted a district rally.

The rally is an annual meeting of several Legion Branches. A temporary cenotaph was erected in front of the Legion building for a ceremony of remembrance.

South Africa: Last Chance for the ANC Gwynne Dyer The African National Congress has ruled South Africa for 23 years, ever since the end of apartheid and the first free election in 1994. Twenty-three years is a very long time in politics, and you would expect it to be losing power sometime around now.

But it was a great and noble institution in its prime, and it would be a pity if its ending were merely squalid.

Nelson Mandela, the first ANC President of South Africa, was a secular saint admired worldwide. Mandela’s successor, Thabo Mbeki, was an honest and intelligent man, but also reclusive, obsessive, and completely lacking in empathy. And then, eight years ago, came President Jacob Zuma, a man who is neither honest nor intelligent, but who is wily enough politically to have survived the endless corruption scandals that litter his past.

This time, however, Zuma has done something that damages the whole country economically. If the ANC cannot force him to resign now, the country’s political future is likely to be short and miserable.

Zuma has feathered his own nest and those of his cronies and allies quite adequately over the past eight years without getting rid of the incorruptible finance minister, Pravin Gordhan. It’s a bit of a mystery why he would do it now, only two years before he himself must retire at the end of his second term. Maybe he is just doing a final big favour for his friends.

Pravin Gordhan was seen by foreign investors (and many South Africans) as the only guarantee that Zuma would not turn the country into a feeding trough for his associates. The finance minister held the pursestrings tight, blocking many of the government contracts that would have enriched

them further. Now he is gone.

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa called the dismissal of Pravin “totally unacceptable” and condemned “greedy and corrupt people” in a broadside clearly aimed at Zuma. Gwede Mantashe, secretary-general of the ANC, said the list of new ministers which Mr Zuma presented to the party leadership was compiled “elsewhere”. Even his old allies in the trade union movement have called on him to step down.

The South African currency, the rand, lost 5 percent of its value on the foreign exchanges, but far more serious was the fact that one of the big rating agencies, Standard and Poor’s, downgraded South African bonds to “ junk” status. If only one of the other two agencies follows suit, big international investors like pension funds will be obliged to dump their South African government debt, and the government will be unable to raise loans abroad.

The reactions against Zuma’s action are so intense that you would think he cannot just ignore them and carry on running the country into the ground. Unfortunately, he may be able to do just that, because real power within the ANC lies in the National Executive Committee, and he has devoted much attention to ensuring that most of the NEC’s members owe him for past favours received.

The odds on Zuma really being forced from office by this incident are less than even. If he gets two more years in office, now with a pliable finance minister who allows the looting of the state coffers and with wicked foreign investors to blame for the damage done, the ANC will be discredited beyond hope of resurrection.

What comes afterwards may be better and it may be worse, but the familiar ANC-ruled South Africa of the past quarter-century will be gone.

The echoes of birds chirping in the background greeted the President of RCL Branch No. 39, Terry Kuzyk as he led the citizens in remembering the Canadians who fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Chaplin Rev. Carolyn Woodall offered prayer and gave thanks to God for those who answered the call to build a world of peace. “We ask God to help us every day to ensure these men’s sacrifices were not in vain and we seek peace through all possible means and recognize in one another our common humanity. We pray for all of our veterans and all the wars that have gone before and for those who train for ones who are coming,” Rev. Woodall said.

Going forth was the laying of wreaths.

After this, the March on the Colors paraded back to the Legion hall for speeches by dignitaries and a buffet dinner.

Vegreville RCL Branch No. 39 Service Officer, Rod Stewart said the Battle of Vimy Ridge did not finish up at supper, or sunset, but the Canadians regrouped and continued for another three days before the battle was considered complete. “All of this was achieved at a cost, 3568 killed, 7004 wounded. Every country needs defining moments, and for Canada, the Battle of Vimy Ridge is the most important one. It combines success, sacrifice, and achievement in an event that placed Canada onto the world stage as a player for the first time,” Stewart said.

Stewart spoke about the soldiers who were at the Battle of Vimy Ridge: Irving Findley, a Lieutenant with 7th Brigade Trench Mortars, wrote to his father two weeks after the battle to say, “A German Officer, Prussian Guard, who was taken prisoner in the scrap, said that the defeat at Vimy Ridge was the hardest blow that the German had received in war.”

Gregory Clark was there as an officer with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles and was awarded the Military Cross for his service commented in 1967; “This is not Canada’s 100th birthday, only its 50th, Canada was born on Vimy Ridge.”

Following this, Woodall said a beautiful version of grace.

A bountiful buffet with roast beef, meatballs, many salads, and desserts was offered afterward.

clerks - CONTINUED from PAGE 5 with the required court documents. Once court is done, the work continues as court generates a number of updates, computer entries and often the creation of files as some of the accused persons may not have attended court as they were ordered.

Another essential duty performed is data integrity of the information in our electronic file systems. This again requires attention to detail and a meticulous approach to the work. This data is the source for statistics that gets used locally and up through all levels of government up to the federal level. This information is used for resourcing, funding, focusing police effort and so much more. A computer programmer or business manager knows how important accurate and complete information is and ours is no different. I could name all the computer systems and applications that our clerks are responsible for knowing and using, but to the general public, it would be meaningless.

There are a lot more other duties they perform from transcribing interviews to dealing with our automated LiveScan system (fingerprinting) and from criminal record checks to prisoner billing reconciliation. They each have shared duties and then some specialized duties but they are always assisting the public and our members to keep things moving. This column is too short to explain everything they do and the contributions they make. As they work in the policing environment and have a very good understanding of what goes on, don’t discount them thinking that a police officer needs to be consulted with every inquiry. In a lot of cases, our clerks know more than our members about certain things and can quickly answer your questions letting you get on with your day, not having to wait for a call back from a member. At the end of it all, they are local residents working to serve you, our local clients.

Bringing awareness to PTSD and mental health Joe Machney Reporter An open evening with Bernie Van Tighem was held at the Myrnam Senior Centre on April 4th to talk about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and how it had severely impacted his life. His intention, to help people to understand how it is caused by telling his story to the gathered firefighters from Mannville, Myrnam, Willingdon, Two Hills and Hairy Hill as well as other people from the community who decided to take in his thoughtful, informative and emotional talk.

PTSD is a mental illness that often involves exposure to trauma from single events that involve death or the threat of death or serious injury. For almost 30 years, Bernie Van Tighem has dealt with the effects of undiagnosed PTSD and had received little support for his condition until the past few years.

Good mental health is key to preventing PTSD and

Myrnam Fire Chief John Fedoriuk, who emceed the evening, began by acknowledging the challenges associated with being a firefighter and the disturbing events that they witness while on duty saving lives and communities.

Bernie Van Tighem’s story began when he joined the Virden Fire and Ambulance services back in 1986.

While there, he witnessed a train derailment and two fatalities. Moving to Calgary and Cochrane area he witnessed multiple traumas with no time off to process the incidents. At ATFS in Vermilion, he was diagnosed with mental illness but was offered no treatment.

From Yellowknife to Nelson he experienced multiple traumas and much stress, yet was still not offered any treatment. It was not until Elkford that he took it upon himself to help himself. At present, he is at work in a non-responsive role and recovering due to good treatment and support from family.

Bernie Van Tighem started by opening up about the emotional nature of what he had gone through and emphasized that people who have had traumatic experiences need not keep it bottled up inside for any reason. Sports Psychology plays a key role in good mental health and mental preparation for possible scenarios that firefighters may encounter while on duty.

“What works for athletes to make them great, can also work for us to make us more resilient and better responders,” Van Tighem said.

In Sports Psychology, there are the Big Four that athletes use to accomplish their goals. These are Goal Setting; Imagery and Visualization; Positive Self-Talk and Tactical Breathing. “These can be used in all aspects of everybody’s life,” Van Tighem stressed.

“After a traumatic event has transpired the attendees must acknowledge it, understand that everybody reacts differently to situations, provide possible coping suggestions, and follow-up with professional help if required,” Van Tighem concluded.

“We need to support our people beyond the call and educate responders on possible reactions for future calls. We can grow from trauma and programs like Road to Mental Readiness must be implemented across the board.”

Funds raised for victim’s families Joe Machney Reporter On Sunday, April 2, Terry Sutton, 39, and Jason Williams, 40 were shot and killed by Raymond Nickerson, aged 36. The two men were shot at a small brown bungalow at 49 Street and 45 Avenue in the sleepy Village of Chipman.

Terry Sutton, father of four children and married to Misti Sutton, had lived in Chipman for several years. Jason Williams, father of two children, had been staying with the Suttons when the two men were shot to death. Both men worked for Ketek Group, an oilfield service, and equipment company, for 10 years.

In an effort to support the families who have suffered from this tragedy, Dave McGee, owner of the Chipman Hotel has helped to raise $750 through fundraising.

“It was started by the Chipman Market staff,” Dave McGee said humbly. “I was doing my second-year anniversary party last Saturday night, on April 8, and I had intended to feed everybody anyways, so I thought I’d just put a donation jar at the door for the people that came to eat. I managed to raise $750 dollars that night.”

According to Dave, there are other initiatives set up within the community to raise money for the victim’s families. Gloria Brown is one such person. She is a family friend who is managing a GoFundMe page, aiming to raise $20,000 or more for the men’s families.

“I still have my bucket here and we’re tak ing donations every day,” Diann Dilts who runs the Chipman Market said. “Someone also told me that they were talking with ATB Bank about starting a trust fund, so that will be good once that gets up and r unning.

On April 13, they’re going to bring in a Pastor and RCMP to talk with people to help them deal with this tragedy.”

KOTOWICH, Patricia Nettie April 24, 1949 – April 2, 2017 It is with deep sadness that the family announces the passing of Patricia Nettie Kotowich after a short but courageous battle with cancer at the age of 67 years.

Patricia is survived by her loving family, her husband of 50 years, Bill; her daughter Valerie; and her special friend Frasier; mother Nettie Zaleschuk; siblings Sonia Tatarin, Marie (Ken) Yakimowich, Don (Deb) Zaleschuk, Irene (Jerry) Palsatt and Joanne (Murray) Huculak; along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Annie, later immigrated to Canada by herself settling to a farm life in Innisfree, AB, where she met and married her husband, Alex. At the age of 101 years, Annie went to Century Park, Vegreville and there enjoyed her latter years. Her memories will be forever remembered by all who knew her. The family expresses utmost gratitude to the great team at Century Park for the wonderful care and kindness she received everyday. Derwent Craft Sale delights Joe Machney Reporter From 10 until 2 on Saturday, April 8 the Derwent Recreational Centre was the hotspot in the little hamlet of Derwent as Debbie Gulayec’s Craft Show once again brought in people with wide-eyed wonder to see crafts on display for sale.

In total this tenth anniversary year, 37 tables offered their products as people from as far as Edmonton, Hairy Hill, Bonnyville and Lloydminster made the trip to contribute to the eclectic experience that was the Derwent Craft Sale.

Regular and new vendors were welcomed back warmly, the four hours were enjoyed by all who came.

Lunch was offered at the concession by Helena Friesen and Tina Wall throughout the day and gave the shoppers more energy to make those tough decisions about whether or not to buy the Tupperware, the woodwork, the honey, or any of the other products. So many choices!!

“I’m very, very pleased,” Debbie Gulayec, who organized the show said. “I felt that the amount of people that have come this year is a good number and the variety of vendors offers a good selection for everybody.”

In art, a commission is the hiring and payment for the creation of a piece, often on behalf of another.

Throughout history, it was common for rulers or governments to commission public art as a means of demonstrating power and wealth. The public art that we see today, has been commissioned to reflect a special occasion, a moment in time. But art can be commissioned by individuals as well, for their home or office, or as a gift.

Today, we see many individuals approach a particular artist, whose style they admire, and ask them to paint a subject important to

them. Having a piece of original art work depicting a favourite place, or person or scene, heightens the value of the piece. In Vegreville, we can see public art pieces at the Aquatic and Fitness Center, Rendezvous Park and on the Building on 50th Street by the rail tracks.

Commissioning an artist to paint a certain picture for you, is a rewarding experience for the artist, as well as the client. It is a journey of creation and the bringing to life of an idea and seeing it come to fruition. The Vegreville Visual Artists are a group of local artists,

who can be approached to help with this. By visiting the galleries, where their work is on display, individuals would be able to see the styles of the various artists. Contacting the artists would answer any questions regarding possible commission work Leora Johnston, a member of V.V.A. and a Grape Art instructor, has recently completed a commissioned work. Her client, Shelli-Jo Melnyk, was interviewed to get her perspective on this experience.

Q: How long have you known the artist?

SJM: I have known Leora Johnston for 5-years.

Q: Why did you select this artist to paint your picture?

SJM: I had seen some of her paintings framed and asked if she would be willing to paint for me. She said, “Yes.” Q: What quality of her artistic style do you appreciate or impresses you most?

SJM: I enjoy the very realistic quality of her artistic ability. You feel like you are right in the scene.

Q: Describe the art piece you had commissioned?

Leora was born in B.C .and spent much of her youth growing up in BC coastal and interior regions. As a child she took summer art classes, which encouraged her love for natural beauty and creation.

She has developed her realistic painting style through studying art books, painting instruction from television workshops and day art classes. She is never without her camera to take interesting pictures of trees, rocks, or cloud formations and animals. These will turn up on her canvasses making each one unique and one-of-a-kind. She is keen to share her art and is encouraged by the interest in her art and commission work Leora’s work can be viewed at the Vegreville Centennial Library Gallery, the St. Joseph’s Hospital IN HOUSE Gallery and the V.V.A. Students Celebrate Aboriginal Culture Rosanne Fortier St. Martin’s School honored Canada 150 by celebrating Canadian history through the cultural diversity of aboriginal people on April 8.

Teacher, Tess Cossey, who teaches grade four organized this event. Eva Stang her aunt presented information and her mother, Joanne Stewart demonstrated how to make bannock.

The morning began with a presentation on understanding native culture, spirituality and pow-wows to Cossey’s and Austin’s classes. Stang began by showing and explaining the cultural items in the display.

The students discovered that when native people have a talking circle, only the person with the talking stick in their hand is allowed to speak.

A ceremony is led by a male or female elder who has wisdom. The elder leads gatherings with prayers and offerings to the Creator, which is the same as God. Smudging happens before prayers where people ask the Creator for assistance.

Sweat Lodge is similar to a church and the ceremony is used for spiritual healing, praying, purification and fasting. Four elements are used earth (rock), fire,

High School Culinary Challenge awards banquet Joe Machney Reporter On February 4, the 10th annual High School Culinary Challenge took place with the results being announced in the form of a banquet at the Shaw Conference Centre on March 6. The culinary team from Edmonton’s Jasper Place High School defeated 16 other teams to take gold at the High School Culinary Challenge Awards Dinner. Silver went to M.E. LaZerte and bronze went to Holy Trinity. This is the third year in a row that Jasper Place has taken the top prize. Teams competed by cooking a three-course meal on February 4 inside the NAIT’s kitchens and were judged on preparation, timing, sanitation, presentation and taste. The banquet was to

celebrate Edmonton and area high school competitors, family, and guests with the same 3-course meal that the students made for the competition. After the meal, the winners of the competition and the winners of the scholarships were announced.

“It’s incredible what these students managed to accomplish on competition day,” Chef Simon Smotkowicz, Chair of the High School Culinary Challenge said. “Each year the bar is raised, and this really turns out to be a shining star in the careers of these young talented chefs.”

Vegreville Composite High School (VCHS) students Brandon Shirley (gr 12), Mathew Landsman (gr. 10), and Walker Allan (gr. 11) competed in the Challenge and although did not win, they all felt that the competition was well worth the experience. Brandon and Walker competed in the event last year.

“For the Competition, the team practiced the whole month before the event, 4 hours a day, mostly after school,” their teacher Deanna Miller said. “Their practice meals were all purchased by staff! This year’s meal was spinach and ricotta ravioli in a tomato cream sauce, poached salmon and rice pilaf with hollandaise sauce, green beans almandine and glazed carrots and chocolate mousse.”

Rosanne Fortier There was no plane fare required as the fun and education was free. Since September 2016, Parent Link Centre has been taking children around the world with their program, PLC Around the World. On April 3, the destination was the Ukraine which was complete with eggs to decorate, coloring sheets to decorate, Ukrainian music to listen to and dance to, Ukrainian food to eat and stories related to the Ukraine. Later, the children learned how to make paska.

“Each month we go around the world so the children can learn about a different culture and see how children in other parts of the world live.

Originally this wasn’t a Canada 150 idea but in July, we are going to focus on Canada and there will be a Canada theme for that big event,” Outreach Coordinator for PLC, Tasha Homeniuk said.

Peavey Mart hosts 4-H BBQ Rosanne Fortier A 4-H BBQ was held at and sponsored by Peavey Mart on April 8. Members of Vegreville 4-H MultiClub and Beef Club helped with the BBQ and the proceeds will be split 50/50 between each club. The members said the 4-H motto is learning by doing and these funds will be used for various activities among the clubs.

Peavey Mart believes in helping Vegreville 4-H because the club is about “leaders building leaders”, were the words of Peavey Mart Supervisor Shane Banack. “4-H is an excellent program because the members learn responsibility and life skills early on which will make them stronger and more productive members of society,” Banack said.

Rosanne Fortier The 38th Annual Wendy Brook Festival Concert featured an impressive array of some of the finest performances chosen by the adjudicators at A.L. Horton School on April 6.

As usual for this concert, A.L. Horton

School had standing room only at the opening time.

The concert presented performances from all classes; strings, piano, speech arts, instruments, bands, vocals, and the Ukrainian Language. Many of the pieces were of Canadian origin to honor Canada 150.

The pow-wow is a way for the community to come together and celebrate the old and new. There is no alcohol or drugs as it is a spiritual ceremony. There are traditional male and female dances; the chicken and grass dance have been around for centuries. Dances with the shawls were created for the pow-wows and competitions.

After this, the children made bannock which was blessed by Stang before a brief smudging ceremony.

The staff and students went to the gym to watch drumming, dancing and singing performances by singer and drummer, Elder Eugene Cardinal, buckskin dancer and singer, Gene Cardinal, and grass dancer, Shondene Stanley

from Kehewin.

Elder Eugene was the emcee and he has been performing for 58 years.

Gene and Shondene have been dancing for approximately 17 years.

Elder Eugene said they wanted to bring the beauty of their culture and dancing to others which is meant to bring health, healing and a good feeling to people.

Gene and Shondene performed three dances where the staff and students cheered by a thunderous applause.

Everyone joined hands and did a round dance which is a friendship dance that brings everyone to the circle. Students enjoyed the round dance as they were talking about this in the hallway later like they wanted to do it again.

Vegreville stands together and calls on Liberals Joe Machney Reporter On April 6, the Mayor of Vegreville Myron Hayduk, all five Town Councilors, along with hundreds of citizens from Vegreville stood as one in front of the Pysanka at noon to film an invitation video to the

Liberals of Alberta, asking them to come and visit our town and tour the Case Processing Centre (CPC).

“Behind me are the Town Council members,” Hayduk began while standing at Egg Park, “and behind them are some of our town residents. We’d like to take this opportunity to invite the Alberta Liberal MPs to come and visit. You probably know about our Pysanka, but we are very diverse in our culture, our heritage and the experience of our community. We would love to give you the opportunity to tour you through our town and the CPC and possibly meet some of the staff there.

We hope that you will make the time because we will make the time to accommodate your visit. Thank you.”

A moment after Mayor Hayduk finished his speech, the crowd raised their Respect Vegreville signs and as one declared, “Rural Alberta matters!”

As the crowd dispersed Mayor Myron Hayduk voiced his personal concern about how the plight to keep the CPC in Vegreville was going, and although on the surface it appears that the town of Vegreville and its citizens have his back, his feelings do not reflect that illusion.

“The major concern I have right now is the negativity of the public of Vegreville and our challenges to keep the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville,” Myron Hayduk said with a scowl. “To hear comments like, you’re wasting your time because the decision has been made is upsetting. With that attitude, if we do nothing, then nothing will happen. You’ve got to learn to stand up for what you believe in and what you believe is right.”

Rainbow Park is full!

Joe Machney Reporter Just south of Vegreville, across Highway 16 lies Rainbow Park and due to the run-off from the heavy snow we’ve had last month, the pond is full to the brim.

“We’re really pleased with this!” Dale Lefebvre commented with a smile. “The pond is full not only of water, but with trout as well. We’d like to advise people to be careful when driving up to it as the pond appears rather quickly once you’re on top of the hill.”

Perogies and Jam Season Finale Rosanne Fortier Perogies and Jam is a way for the community to get together to embrace local talent. Their Season Finale event played their harmony further with humorous and fun songs, as well as, Canadian songs dedicated to Canada 150 to 110 citizens on April 9 at Vegreville Senior Sunshine Club Centre.

Town Councilor, Dave Berry opened the event and spoke about some of Vegreville’s plans for Canada 150 and the Canada 150 passport.

Don Harfield and Gordon Forbes kicked off the event with a lively version of, ‘This Land is Your Land’ and a few more pieces.

Then the Off Ramp Boys held the audience’s attention with their pieces which were complimented by plenty of humor.

Roger Harrison performed a few pieces with his acoustic guitar which was followed by Albert Stewart’s three fiddle tunes and the group- Da’Vision By Zero.

Joe Proskiw, a 91-year-old yodeler skillfully did some sets on his acoustic guitar.

The evening closed with Harfield and many of the musicians performing, This Land is Your Land.

Each of the performances was wellreceived by the audience and throughout the evening, citizens enjoyed food from the concession which was prepared by chefs-Dwayne Hlady and Bob Carter.

Canada Day 2017 Planning Meeting Rosanne Fortier To celebrate Canada 150, the Town of Vegreville plans to make Canada Day for 2017 memorable and full of activities. But to do this, there is a need for volunteers!

Impact Vegreville Committee hosted a Canada Day Planning Meeting for Canada 150 on March 15 at

Vegreville Sunshine Club.

The meeting began with Chair for Impact Vegreville, Laurie Evans welcoming everyone. All community members are invited to attend these meetings and everyone was pleased to have a represented from the Latin Community at this meeting.

It continued with Evans and Town of Vegreville Communication Coordinator, Rachel Farr leading participants through a review of planned activities/events for Canada Day. The possible happenings on that day are the regular pancake breakfast at Vegreville Social Centre in the morning that will have local entertainment and speeches by dignitaries. After this, the Pysanka Park plans to have an outdoor market which will include a farmers market, art show, and a cultural market. This might include balloon artists, bouncy house, mascots and more. The official ceremony at noon will be the regular one with flag rising, marching and the fly over. With this, they hope to have a gentleman from Saddle Lake to represent the native community.

Entertainment might continue at this park with mixed entertainment on a stage and FCSS games in the park. If it is raining, there might be tents or some of the activities will be held indoors. The Sunshine Club Centre might be home for some of the activities.

There were plans to have a slopitch tournament where someone suggested having a community fun slopitch game instead of a tournament.

Entertainment is planned for Vegreville’s Downtown and at the Rendezous Park with Dinner in the Streets, Ball Hockey Game, an Amazing 150 Race and more. With this, it was

suggested that if too much is happening on Canada Day, there might not be many people participating and maybe the events should be held allyear long for Canada 150 instead.

Another person mentioned that a family dance might be a better idea than beer gardens.

The regular fireworks at 11 p.m. will be out at the Pysanka Park on July 1.

IV member at large, Marg Varga went forth then to speak about the Passport book for Canada 150 which is a free book that anyone can have and with it, they go to events held all-year long and then they can have their book stamped and can win a $500 prize package. Marg said the passport book is meant to help people feel a part of the community and get them engaged in the events.

Evans continued with reading FCM Canada 150Community Leader Jerrold Lemko’s notes where Lemko said he couldn’t attend the meeting but they have been meeting with businesses, schools, groups and organizations and putting the idea out to celebrate Canada 150 all 12 months of the year.

The next meeting for Canada 150 will be held on April 11 at Vegreville Senior Sunshine Club Centre at 7 p.m.
