Amazons are typically of the Greek mythology of strong warrior-like women. Whilst this is a mythical concept, it is brought into real existence as we tell the stories of successful women from and across Africa; each one is a story of dotting, fierce and admirable victories through the battle fields of life.
In life we all face obstacles. Life tends to look everyone in the face and say to us, prove yourself to be what or who you really think you are. Hence the obstacles, the hurdles, rejections, dead ends, delays, struggles, oppositions, aloneness and so much more. If fighting through all of these do not qualify anyone to be a warrior, nothing else really does.
Our Amazon magazine edition spotlights women who have fought a good fight and have come out victorious in their various endeavours. Many are trail blazers and their stories are laced with so much inspiration, wisdom and life strategy. Whilst we hope you find it really inspiring to the point that it sparks up something in you or awakens the gladiator or Amazon in you, we also cease this opportunity to celebrate and to honour our African Amazons. The continent of Africa has a better story to tell because of our Amazons.
In this edition, amongst several other valuable insights we will be sharing the story of Dr. Nene Chinemerem Oluwagbohun. She is our lead Amazon for the June 2024 edition. You could be the next, so sit back relax, grab a cup of something nice and have a great time.
Exclusive Interview with
Dr. Nene Chinemerem Oluwagbohun:
I am Dr. Nene Chinemerem Oluwagbohun, a leading African team-building coach who has transitioned into a renowned family system coach. As a certified parent coach, I have guided thousands of parents on their parenting journeys over the years. I am also the founder of the "You and Your Child Foundation" and the "Global Change Agent Academy."
My deep passion for transforming individuals and society through family system coaching has earned me numerous recognitions and awards. I am truly honoured to be featured on this platform. Thank you, The New Africa Magazine, for having me.
Can you tell us about your journey from being a Team-building Coach to a renowned Family System Coach?
I began my journey in team building in 2009 when I joined the renowned company, Team Building International. There, I had the privilege of working alongside the esteemed teambuilding coach, Dr. Yinka Olugbodi. Dr. Olugbodi had recently transitioned from Access Bank to establish his team-building organization, which has since become a globally recognized leader in the field. Unlike many teambuilding firms that focus primarily on HR recruitment, Dr. Olugbodi's organization stands out for its dedicated approach to team building.
Dr. Yinka Olugbodi is an incredible individual, and under his guidance, we built an impressive clientele, including the World Bank, the Canadian High Commission, ActionAid, various government organizations, and numerous multinationals. My growth within the organization was swift, and I was soon offered a mentoring and partnership position. I eventually became the Business Development Manager for the Abuja and northern branches, a role that was both inspiring and fulfilling.
I enjoyed every moment of my time in team building, helping organizations navigate their team-building challenges. However, in 2016, I decided to transition into family coaching, a field where I felt I could make an even greater impact.
What are some of the key transferable skills from team-building that you find most effective in family coaching?
Interestingly, virtually all the skills used in team building are applicable in family coaching. For instance, goal setting is crucial for families, assisting them in setting and achieving their goals, which contributes to individual growth.
Active listening, a key team-building technique, is equally important in a family setting. Everyone wants to be heard and understood, and active listening helps you understand people's perspectives and emotions when you interact with them.
Trust building is another vital technique that strengthens trust within family relationships, as everyone in the family wants to feel trusted.
Positive reinforcement is also essential. As a team leader, using encouraging words helps people behave better and improve. Similarly, in a family setting, encouraging children helps them develop a growth mindset, seeing mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow. If a team leader consistently criticizes team members, they won't perform well. However, with constant encouragement, you will see effective performance, collaboration, and problem-solving.
Role clarity is another important aspect. In a team, understanding each person's role fosters respect. Similarly, in a family, when everyone understands their roles—father, mother, aunt, big brother, big sister, etc.—there is respect and fewer chaotic incidents.
Tracking progress and celebrating achievements together is also beneficial. For example, at the beginning of the year, the family can discuss and celebrate what they planned and achieved. Sharing stories, discussing family history, and linking it to current activities bonds the family, keeps them together, and helps them become better individuals. These skills are transferable to the workplace, schools, relationships, and future marriages.
These strong team-building techniques are very applicable in a family setting.
Can you share an example of how you’ve successfully applied these skills to resolve family conflicts?
Oh yes! I have also used these skills extensively. For instance, active listening helps me identify the needs of a family unit when they speak. This has allowed me to understand their perspective on conflicts. As a family coach and therapist, actively listening to people is crucial. It helps you understand what they are going through, how they feel about the conflict, and what intervention techniques you need to apply to resolve it.
Another technique I frequently use is positive reinforcement. As I mentioned before, this skill is effective in resolving conflicts. It encourages desired behaviours and actions within the family system, especially in teenagers and young adults. I encourage parents to verbally reinforce their children positively. For example, when a child wakes up and cleans their room, saying, "That's very good! You did a great job," can be very encouraging. This kind of reinforcement helps resolve conflicts, especially behavioural issues in young people. It is vital for parents to positively reinforce their children whenever they do something positive.
You have coached thousands of parents across different cultures. How do you adapt your coaching techniques to cater to diverse cultural backgrounds?
I would say that these techniques are universal. They are applicable in every culture when it comes to family because everyone wants to be seen, heard, and understood within their family. Regardless of cultural background, every family experiences conflict. These techniques, much like life principles, are applicable everywhere. They help us become better humans and individuals, contributing to the building of a healthy family system.
People want to be heard, seen, understood, and encouraged. They seek a sense of progress and achievement. They also desire to be trusted and loved. When these techniques are applied, they produce these results irrespective of cultural differences.
What common challenges do parents face, regardless of cultural differences, and how do you address them?
This is very important. As I mentioned earlier, these techniques are especially useful for addressing specific challenges. For example, one family might be dealing with setting boundaries, while another could be facing issues related to their children's use of the internet. These concerns are common across cultures because everyone uses the internet today.
One significant issue among children is the amount of time they spend online. It shapes their minds, and I encourage parents to establish boundaries on the use of devices and the amount of time children spend on them. It's also crucial to censor the content they are exposed to. As a parent, you should review the content your children are accessing, whether it's on an iPad or any other device, even with your teenage children. There are apps available that allow you to monitor and control what they are watching and the websites they visit. This is very important.
When it comes to setting boundaries, it doesn't matter if you are White, Black, Asian, or Indian; healthy boundaries are essential in every family. Communicate these boundaries, especially with your children. I encourage parents to hold regular family meetings to discuss and agree on family boundaries together, including the consequences of breaking them. Remember, children thrive within boundaries. It is unfair to let children grow without guidance. Every child needs an adult to guide them, so boundaries are a crucial topic for discussion.
Your book, "My Growing Adventure Book 1," and other publications have gained significant recognition. What inspired you to start writing these books?
One of my greatest inspirations is my love for families. I am passionate about helping parents raise their children to become well-rounded, successful adults and
equipping parents with the knowledge needed to navigate the challenges modern families face. Children are at a crucial stage of learning, and often parents are unsure of what or how to teach them.
My books are written to spark conversations within families. Any book of mine you pick up will encourage discussions with your children. I don't write just for the sake of writing. I write to trigger, inspire, and stir up thoughts in the minds of both children and parents. This is why I write.
How do your books complement your coaching practices?
The principles highlighted in my books are the same ones I encourage parents to apply in my coaching sessions. These principles include communication, storytelling, encouragement, negotiation, and setting boundaries. As we all know, communication is key for every relationship to grow.
These principles serve as my coaching materials when I am talking with parents. Often, I refer them to my books, which elaborate on topics mentioned in the sessions, bringing more clarity. Since coaching sessions are time-limited, referring parents to my books encourages them to delve deeper into the subjects we've discussed.
I encourage parents to grab a copy of my books because they offer practical ways to apply the principles we've talked about in our sessions. This not only helps them understand better but also motivates them to take action on what they need to do.
Can you tell us more about the “You and Your Child Foundation” and the “Global Change Agent Academy”? What inspired you to establish these organizations?
The You and Your Child Foundation is an organization dedicated to helping and educating parents on how to build a healthy family system by addressing underlying issues, strengthening relationships, and fostering resilience. We use a blend of skills and knowledge delivered through conferences, podcasts, workshops, books, blogs, and free materials for parents. Our mission is to strengthen the family unit globally by providing coaching, mentoring, and resources that promote effective communication, problem-solving, trustbuilding, and celebration of diversity.
We believe in celebrating our differences within families and appreciating each other. This is one of the goals of "You and Your Child."
The Global Change Agent Academy is a program within the foundation, aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders, especially Gen Zs. Parents often feel lost when it comes to guiding Gen Zs. While the education system is valuable, we see ourselves as a supportive extension to it. We advocate for progressive and gradual changes in the educational system rather than abrupt ones.
The Global Change Agent Academy offers an alternative educational system to support parents and help the young generation. We cover topics that develop executive functional skills, social skills, problem-solving, decision-making, communication skills, emotional intelligence, mental intelligence, time management, social media interaction, and handling peer pressure—both positive and negative.
We also focus on team spirit, leadership, discipline, entrepreneurship, and goal setting. These topics are crucial in today's society. Often, when people finish school, they struggle because they haven't been taught these practical life skills and values.
We aim to start early, offering classes for children aged 5 and above to gradually instill these skills and values, setting them up for success.
While our parents did their best with the knowledge they had, we now know better, especially with the benefits of education and exposure. As much as we celebrate the existing educational system, we believe there are areas for improvement. A child who understands emotional intelligence how to control emotions, think critically, and use their mind effectively will thrive in life.
At the Global Change Agent Academy, we've seen amazing success with these approaches. For more information, visit: www.youandyourchild.org.
What are some notable achievements or success stories from these initiatives?
I have witnessed many notable achievements through our initiatives. For instance, our summer camps are highly anticipated events. Children love attending them and often don't want to leave because they provide an excellent opportunity for kids to meet and interact.
We also organize "The Children Bold Conference," a global event designed to teach children how to be bold. This conference has been held in various parts of the world, including Nigeria, the USA, and Canada. There have been numerous outstanding testimonies from past Bold Conferences, and people still talk about them. I often get asked, "Dr. Nene, when is the next one?" My response is, "Just wait, we're about to start planning for 2024." People are eagerly looking forward to it.
The empowerment that comes from these events is tremendous. They create a space where children can listen to speakers, engage in discussions, and feel valued. Seeing children come in, receive their portfolios, sit down, take notes, and ask questions is incredibly rewarding.
We address topics relevant to the issues children face in today's society. This generation is unique, and we must equip them with the right knowledge and skills.
Additionally, we conduct outreaches, such as feeding over 5,000 families during Easter in March. We also empower widows by training them in various skills and providing them with funds to start smallscale businesses. These initiatives support families globally, helping parents avoid financial frustration and stress while raising their children. We strive to support them in every way we can.
How do you feel about being nominated among the 100 Iconic African Leaders by The New African magazine and receiving numerous other awards?
I feel incredibly encouraged and empowered right now. This excitement I'm experiencing is profound because it underscores the importance of what I'm doing. It's reinforcing my sense of encouragement. The recognition and appreciation I'm receiving are motivating me even further. Knowing that people are noticing and valuing my efforts inspires me to strive for even more. Being nominated among such remarkable individuals who are making a significant impact in the world is a true blessing. All I aim to do is to continue contributing and inspiring others.
Which award or recognition has been the most meaningful to you, and why?
Oh my goodness! Each of these experiences has been incredibly meaningful to me. They've not only shifted my perspective but also fueled my drive to achieve more. Knowing that the whole world is watching motivates me to strive for excellence. Every recognition, no matter how small, is significant to me. I feel honoured and deeply humbled to be acknowledged in each instance.
As a cancer survivor and someone who has overcome significant challenges, what advice do you have for others facing tough times?
As Robert Schuller once said, "Tough times never last, but tough people do." Similarly, as the Bible teaches, "And it came to pass," reminding us that all challenges are temporary. Whatever difficulties you face in life will eventually pass. Stay inspired, keep your vision and goals clear, and ensure you remain motivated.
Surround yourself with people who inspire you and immerse yourself in positive influences. This shift in dynamics can transform how you navigate challenges, as everyone encounters them in some form or another. Taking responsibility for your own inspiration and maintaining a positive mindset is crucial.
Personally, this mindset has been my anchor through challenging times, including battling cancer and undergoing heart surgery a decade ago. Staying positive has led me to where I am today, knowing that every trial eventually becomes part of your story, contributing to your growth and ability to inspire others.
Remember, tough times are fleeting and will only enhance your journey. Embrace them as part of your narrative, knowing they strengthen and refine you, making you a better advocate for encouragement in the lives of others.
What are your future goals for your career in family system coaching and your philanthropic efforts?
My future goal is to travel around the world, impacting as many families as possible, starting from Africa and extending to every corner of the globe, including the Western world—Australia, the Islands, Mexico, and the Bahamas. I believe that Parenting Principles are universally applicable, transcending cultural boundaries. Parenting is not solely influenced by culture; rather, there are fundamental techniques that can benefit all families, helping us raise successful individuals and contribute to a better world.
My vision is to become the foremost parenting coach globally, renowned for applying team-building techniques to parenting. This initiative, named the Global Change Agent Academy and You and Your Child, aims to reach families worldwide because every parent and child can benefit from these principles.
Your motto is “Every family is a team.” Can you elaborate on this philosophy and how it influences your coaching approach?
In every family, there exists a team dynamic, where each member works towards a common purpose and goal. Just as in any effective team, whether in an office or organization, the ultimate aim is to achieve success. Every parent shares the goal of nurturing and raising successful individuals. Even God, in creating mankind, exemplified teamwork by saying, "Let us make man," highlighting the collaborative nature of creation.
Family, therefore, is a fundamental team unit. A father cannot raise a child alone; he needs a partner. Even in cases of divorce, co-parenting underscores the necessity of teamwork for the sake of the child's wellbeing. While team members may not always see eye to eye, their shared commitment to their children requires cooperation.
Establishing boundaries within this team framework is crucial to preventing misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Just as colleagues in an organization have distinct roles and responsibilities, so too must spouses understand and respect each other's boundaries within the family. Effective communication and mutual respect ensure that external influences do not disrupt the harmony within the home.
Every family should operate with a clear vision and goals, similar to a wellorganized team in a professional setting. This clarity enables parents to coach their family effectively, guiding them towards shared objectives and fostering a supportive environment. Understanding each member's role and responsibilities helps mitigate conflicts and enhances overall family cohesion.
An essential aspect of effective family dynamics is setting goals and working collectively towards achieving them. Just as Celina Williams' father had a vision for his children's future and pursued it with determination, every parent should have a defined purpose in mind when starting a family. Lack of direction can lead to confusion and discord, whereas a shared vision unites family members and gives them a sense of purpose.
Educating parents on these principles is vital, as many start families without fully understanding their roles and responsibilities. Conferences and workshops play a crucial role in imparting this knowledge, helping parents navigate challenges and foster a nurturing environment for their children.
In essence, viewing every family as a team fosters a supportive and goal-oriented approach to parenting. By embracing this philosophy, parents can cultivate a harmonious environment where each member's contributions are valued, and collective aspirations drive success.
How does your faith play a role in your work and personal life?
My faith is incredibly significant to me. I firmly believe that God is the creator of all things. When I delve into the concept of team building, I see it as something initiated by God, as evidenced by the Trinity—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit— working together in perfect harmony.
Every human being, as a spiritual being, embodies a team within themselves— comprising spirit, soul, and body. This interconnectedness illustrates that we are not meant to function alone; rather, we thrive when these elements work together in synergy. Applying this principle to families, I see that God holds family in high regard, as it was the first institution He established.
For me, parenting is a sacred responsibility ordained by God, and I am passionate about coaching families in a way that reflects His divine plan. Knowing that God is intimately involved in parenting gives me a deep sense of purpose and excitement. It enriches my perspective and inspires me to approach my role as a family coach with dedication and enthusiasm.
What motivated you to become a Certified Menopause Coach and a Marriage and Family Therapist in training?
In the journey of family life, transitions are inevitable and each phase brings its own set of challenges. It begins with the transition from being single to becoming a married couple, followed by the honeymoon phase, and then the transition into parenthood. From parenting, there's the progression through raising toddlers, preteens, teenagers, and finally preparing young adults to enter the world on their own.
As children grow and develop, so do parents, particularly women whose bodies undergo significant changes. Often, these changes are not acknowledged or understood, leading to strain in relationships and even separation or divorce.
Many couples struggle because they fail to recognize the profound impact these life stages have on both partners.
For women, especially during the phase of menopause, these bodily changes can be dramatic and disruptive. Menopause brings about hormonal fluctuations, mood swings, and physical symptoms that can be overwhelming. Women may experience health issues and find it challenging to fulfill their roles as mothers and partners. This period of transition requires understanding and support from their spouses, who may struggle to comprehend the changes their wives are going through.
As a wellness coach, I recognize the importance of helping women navigate these transitions effectively. When a woman shares her diagnosis of menopause or pre-menopause, my role involves teaching her strategies to manage her emotions and communicate these changes openly with her family. This communication is crucial for maintaining family harmony during what can be a tumultuous time.
Imagine a scenario where a woman is grappling with menopausal symptoms while also dealing with a troubled teenage child. The emotional turmoil she experiences affects her ability to connect with her family emotionally and physically. This disconnect can lead to feelings of inadequacy and confusion for both partners.
Support from a menopause coach can make a significant difference in how couples navigate this phase of life. By providing guidance and understanding, a coach can help couples strengthen their relationship, communicate effectively, and adapt to the changes that come with menopause. This support is essential for both partners to feel valued and understood during this challenging period.
In summary, recognizing and addressing the impact of menopause on family dynamics is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and overall well-being. With the right support and understanding, couples can navigate these transitions with resilience and mutual respect.
How do these additional qualifications enhance your ability to support families?
A few years ago, I made the decision to pursue a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy to specialize in the field of family therapy. This choice stemmed from my desire to become proficient in supporting individuals and families facing various challenges.
In my practice, I differentiate between coaching, counselling, and therapy based on the client's needs. Therapy involves delving into the root causes of issues, providing deep insights and healing. Counselling focuses on offering guidance and support through challenging situations. Coaching, on the other hand, emphasizes goal setting and empowerment to achieve desired outcomes.
As a Certified Parent Coach, Certified Teen Coach, and Certified Menopause Coach, in addition to being a Marriage and Family Therapist, I possess a comprehensive skill set. This enables me to effectively assist families by knowing when to employ coaching versus therapeutic approaches during sessions. Whether addressing parenting issues, navigating the complexities of adolescence, or supporting individuals through the changes of menopause, I leverage my diverse expertise to provide tailored support and guidance. This holistic approach ensures that I can meet the unique needs of each client and foster positive outcomes within family dynamics.
What advice would you give to aspiring coaches who want to make a significant impact in their communities?
Continuous learning is crucial in coaching. keep expanding your knowledge and remain open to new challenges. When you embark on the coaching journey, you inevitably uncover various issues that require solutions. Embrace these challenges rather than avoiding them.
For instance, I initially started as a teambuilding coach, but I soon realized the principles applied equally to family dynamics, prompting me to expand my focus. Now, I've identified a pressing need to support women navigating menopause, highlighting the evolving nature of my practice. Each of these transitions represents a new opportunity for growth and learning.
The adage "my people perish for lack of knowledge" resonates deeply with me. It underscores the importance of actively pursuing knowledge and skill development in coaching. It's not enough to declare yourself a coach in a specific area and remain stagnant. Engage in continuous education, take exams, attend conferences, and engage in meaningful conversations within your field. By continually challenging yourself and staying informed, you can better serve those who rely on your expertise.
In essence, ongoing learning and professional development are essential in coaching. Embrace new challenges, stay informed, and actively seek opportunities to enhance your skills. This proactive approach ensures that you remain effective and responsive to the evolving needs of your clients.
How do you envision the role of family system coaching evolving in the future, especially in the African context?
Family coaching has emerged as a vital and enduring industry, evolving alongside our expanding knowledge base. With the advent of cyber safety challenges, such as cyberbullying, it has become increasingly clear that families require informed guidance and support. This global issue underscores the necessity for family coaching to educate and empower communities, ensuring parents are equipped to navigate these new realities without chaos or family breakdown.
In the African context, family coaching plays a crucial role in supporting parents as they raise children who are prepared to make a global impact, transcending cultural boundaries. By providing essential education and insights, family coaches help parents navigate the complexities of modern parenting, fostering understanding and proactive strategies to nurture resilient and successful individuals.
As we continue to advance in understanding and facing new challenges, family coaching remains essential in preparing families for the future, promoting harmony, and empowering parents to confidently navigate the evolving landscape of parenting in a globalized world

Ellen Johnson Sirleaf made history as the first female president of Liberia and the first female head of state in Africa. A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Sirleaf's leadership during Liberia's post-conflict reconstruction earned her global recognition for promoting peace, democracy, and women empowerment. Her tenure as president marked a transformative period in Liberia's history, inspiring women across the continent to pursue political leadership roles.
Born on October 29, 1938, in Monrovia, Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, made history as the 24th president of Liberia from 2006-2018. She was a groundbreaking figure in African politics, known for her leadership, resilience, and dedication to promoting peace and democracy.
Sirleaf's political career began in the 1970s when she served in various positions within the Liberian government, including serving as Minister of Finance. However, her opposition to the authoritarian regime of President Samuel Doe led to her imprisonment and subsequent exile in the United States.
During her time in exile, Sirleaf continued her activism and advocacy for democracy and human rights in Liberia. She played a key role in various international organizations, including the United Nations, advocating for peace and development in Africa.
In 2006, Sirleaf made history when she was elected as the president of Liberia, following the country's devastating civil wars. Her election marked a significant milestone for women in African politics, inspiring women across the continent to pursue leadership roles.
As president, Sirleaf focused on rebuilding Liberia's economy, infrastructure, and institutions devastated by years of conflict. She implemented numerous reforms aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. Sirleaf also prioritized women empowerment, appointing women to key positions within her government and advocating for policies that promoted gender equality and women rights.
Sirleaf's leadership during Liberia's postconflict reconstruction earned her global recognition and accolades. In 2011, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her "non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women rights to full participation in peace-building work." She was the first woman in Africa to receive this prestigious award.
Throughout her presidency, Sirleaf faced numerous challenges, including criticism of her handling of corruption and economic issues. However, she remained committed to her vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Liberia.
Sirleaf's tenure as president ended in 2018 when she stepped down after serving two terms in office, in accordance with Liberia's constitution. Despite the challenges and criticisms she faced, Sirleaf's legacy as a trailblazer and champion of peace, democracy, and women empowerment in Africa continues to inspire generations of leaders across the continent.
EFFECTIVELY NAVIGATING YOUR BODY TRANSITION SEASON
Life for an African woman is a tapestry woven with vibrant threads of strength, resilience, and cultural richness. As we navigate each stage, from youth to motherhood, our bodies undergo beautiful transformations. One such transition, menopause, often remains shrouded in silence, shrouded in secrecy. But menopause, the natural end of a woman’s reproductive years, needn’t be a time of fear or isolation. It can be a powerful journey of self-discovery, one, African women have been navigating for generations.
Menopause marks a significant milestone in a woman's life—a natural biological transition signaling the end of reproductive years.
and shame. Limited access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural regions, can hinder access to diagnosis and treatment options.
Additionally, misinformation and negative beliefs surrounding menopause can create unnecessary anxiety and fear. Menopause is characterized by the cessation of menstruation for at least 12 consecutive months, marking the end of fertility. Leading up to menopause is perimenopause, during which hormone levels fluctuate unpredictably, leading to irregular periods and various symptoms.
This phase, typically occurring between the ages of 45 and 55, brings about profound changes in hormonal balance and bodily functions. Effectively navigating menopause involves understanding its physical, emotional, and psychological dimensions and equipping oneself with strategies to manage its effects.
For African women, navigating this shift within can be compounded by societal and cultural factors. The lack of open communication around menopause can lead to feelings of isolation
menopause triggers a range of physical changes. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and changes in libido. Beyond these immediate symptoms, menopause also affects longterm health, such as increased risk of osteoporosis due to bone density loss and changes in cardiovascular health, including elevated cholesterol levels and increased risk of heart disease. Menopause isn't just a physical transition; it also
impacts emotional and psychological wellbeing. Mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression can accompany hormonal fluctuations. Cognitive changes, such as memory lapses and difficulty concentrating, are also reported by some women. These changes can affect selfesteem, relationships, and overall quality of life if not addressed.
Effective management of menopausal symptoms involves a combination of lifestyle adjustments and in some cases, medical interventions. Adopting a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D can support bone health, while regular exercise, including weight-bearing exercises and cardiovascular activities, can help maintain overall fitness and manage weight gain commonly associated with menopause.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains a widely used treatment to alleviate severe symptoms, although it's not suitable for everyone and requires careful consideration in consultation with healthcare providers. Alternative therapies such as herbal supplements, acupuncture, and mindfulness techniques are also explored by many women seeking relief from menopausal symptoms. Protecting bone health is crucial during and after menopause. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, combined with regular exercise, can help prevent osteoporosis and reduce fracture risk. Cardiovascular health should also be monitored closely with attention to managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels through diet, exercise, and medical supervision. Navigating menopause can be challenging, but numerous resources and support systems are available to help women through this transition. Healthcare professionals specializing in menopause management, including gynecologists and endocrinologists, can provide personalized guidance and treatment options.
including intimacy and communication with partners and family members. Open and honest communication about physical and emotional changes is essential.
Seeking understanding and support from loved ones can help alleviate stress and strengthen relationships during this transition. Menopause is a natural and inevitable phase of a woman's life, signaling the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. By understanding the physical, emotional, and psychological aspects of menopause and adopting proactive strategies for managing its effects, women can navigate this transition with greater ease and confidence.
Embracing self-care, seeking support, and staying informed are keys to maintaining health and well-being beyond menopause.

Injera is not only a kind of bread—it’s also an eating utensil. In Ethiopia and Eritrea, this spongy, sour flatbread is used to scoop up meat and vegetable stews. Injera also lines the tray on which the stews are served, soaking up their juices as the meal progresses. When this edible tablecloth is eaten, the meal is officially over.
Injera is made with teff, a tiny, round grain that flourishes in the highlands of Ethiopia. While teff is very nutritious, it contains practically no gluten. This makes teff ill-suited for making raised bread, however injera still takes advantage of the special properties of yeast. A short period of fermentation gives it an airy, bubbly texture, and also a slightly sour taste.
Ethiopian and Eritrean immigrants have modified their recipes after moving to the United States or Europe, depending on what grains are available to them. The injera you find in many East African restaurants in the United States includes both teff and wheat flours. Most injera made in Ethiopia and Eritrea, on the other hand, is made solely with teff.
CAUTION
Kids, please don’t try this at home without the help of an adult.
Depending on where you live, teff flour can be difficult to come by. Try a well-stocked health food store.
How to make Injera
• ¼ cup teff flour
• ¾ cup all-purpose flour
• 1 cup water
• a pinch of salt
• peanut or vegetable oil
• a mixing bowl
• a nonstick pan or cast-iron skillet
Tip
If you have teff grain instead of flour, first grind it in a clean coffee grinder, or with a mortar and pestle.
GET TO WORK
1. Put the teff flour in the bottom of a mixing bowl, and sift in the all-purpose flour.
2. Slowly add the water, stirring to avoid lumps.
3. Put the batter aside for a day or more (up to three days) to allow it to ferment. In this time, your injera batter will start to bubble and acquire the slight tanginess for which it’s known. Note: If you find that your injera batter does not ferment on its own, try adding a teaspoon of yeast.
4. Stir in the salt.
5. Heat a nonstick pan or lightly oiled cast-iron skillet until a water drop dances on the surface.
Make sure the surface of the pan is smooth: Otherwise, your injera might fall apart when you try to remove it.
6. Coat the pan with a thin layer of batter. Injera should be thicker than a crêpe, but not as thick as a traditional pancake. It will rise slightly when it heats.
7. Cook until holes appear on the surface of the bread. Once the surface is dry, remove the bread from the pan and let it cool.
