•NORTH CAROLINA•

ender County, located along the coast of North Carolina, is easy to get to, with access to major highways that include I-40, US 17, NC 132 and US 421, and it’s just a short 30 minutes off I-95. From the beaches to the battleground, Pender County is host to six towns and seven communities. Whether you are on a quest for history, relaxation or beautiful scenery and natural resources, every community has something to offer. The terrain in Pender County is basically flat and the soil has proven ideal for the county’s primary food crop, blueberries. The county enjoys a long growing season, and residents as well as vacationers can participate in outdoor activities almost year-round. Small towns and country charm make you feel right at home surrounded by a peaceful environment of beaches and woodlands. Access to rivers and local game lands are available all throughout the county.

Annual New Year’s Eve Blueberry Drop

Lake Linda’s Christmas Lights

There’s no better way to celebrate the new year! Join the Town of Burgaw and Pender County on December 31 from 5 to 7 pm (12 midnight GMT) for the Annual New Year’s Eve Blueberry Drop. Festivities take place in Historic Downtown Burgaw with live music, familyfriendly entertainment, food trucks and a big crowd of happy people — and you’ll be home in time for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on TV.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, many travelers on U.S. Highway 17 in Hampstead unknowingly drive past one of southeastern North Carolina’s best musical Christmas light shows. Nestled behind a tree line is a Christmas wonderland and musical light show that one family provides to spread Christmas cheer to thousands of other families. What was once Hampstead’s best-kept secret is a must-do holiday tradition that has also been featured on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight.

The NC Spot Festival, Pender County’s longest-standing festival, celebrates one of the most abundant local fish species: the spot! Every year since 1963, the residents of Hampstead have celebrated their history and fishing heritage with the North Carolina Spot Festival. Hampstead, one of Pender County’s fastestgrowing communities, prides itself on being known as the Seafood Capital of the Carolinas, a fact that is made known on the town’s large welcome sign and honored at this event each November. The popular two-day Spot Festival offers spot fish dinner plates, bands, entertainment, food vendors, arts & crafts and inflatables for the kids. Proceeds benefit the local schools and the Pender County EMS and Fire Department. With thousands in attendance and more than 6,000 spot dinner plates served annually, this is the largest fundraiser in the community. Burgaw  Nestled in the heart of Pender County and serving as the county seat, Burgaw is a small, quaint town that possesses many charms that take you back to an older era. Incorporated on February 25, 1879, Burgaw was a railroad town along the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad. Today you can visit the historic train depot, the oldest in North Carolina. Now a progressive, thriving town, Burgaw is still rich in history and retains the uniqueness of what we love about small towns. The charm of historic Downtown Burgaw and its Courthouse Square has attracted filmmakers, making the town a

familiar backdrop in many movies. Burgaw offers connectivity at the local library, schools and parks, and its Osgood Canal Greenway and Urban Walking Trail makes the town a trail community on the Mountain to Sea Trail that traverses the entire state. Burgaw welcomes visitors for festivals and events, including the popular North Carolina Blueberry Festival in June, and to its walkable historic Downtown area for shopping, antique shops, coffee and dining.

 Settled in 1888, the unincorporated town was named for John H. Currie, a director of the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Railroad. The community is home to the historic Moores Creek National Battlefield and has many acres of farmlands, small homes and winding roads. Wildlife such as deer and bear can be spotted almost any time of day. The Bell House, built in 1846, is one of the oldest homes in Currie. Also still standing is a oneroom schoolhouse on Highway 210.

Maple Hill

 This unincorporated community in the eastern area of Pender County is well-traveled by the many

visitors passing through on their way to the beaches of Surf City and Topsail Beach. Diverse in culture and known as an agricultural center for many farmers, the town’s name can be traced to a hilltop maple tree or maple grove.

Penderlea

 Once known as a “farm city,” Penderlea is an agricultural community established in 1934 by the U.S. Department of the Interior. It was the first of 152 subsistence resettlement projects under Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. The Penderlea community was laid out in a horseshoe fashion around a central community center that included an auditorium, a gymnasium and a school. Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt made a personal visit to Penderlea in 1937 in an effort to boost nationwide enthusiasm for her husband’s New Deal proposals.

Communities Scotts Hill

 This community on the Pender

County line was named for the Scott family, who lived on a hill in the vicinity of what is now the Old Scotts Hill AME Church. Two U.S. presidents have passed through Scotts Hill on their way to Wilmington: President George Washington in 1791 and President James Monroe in 1819.

The center of the area was and still is Poplar Grove Plantation, famous for its former peanut farm. Since 1980 the plantation has been open to the public as a historical attraction, educational facility and host to many wonderful weekly and annual events.

Since Revolutionary times, Rocky Point has been known for its wonderfully fertile soil and bountiful crops. When the channel of the Cape Fear River was deepened, the rock that filled the new inlet below Wilmington came from the Rocky Point section of the Northeast Cape Fear River. Upon completion in 1875, it was called “The Rocks.”

The Pender House The Pender House, formerly known as The Black Hotel, is Burgaw’s original inn. Believed to be constructed in 1896 one block from the historic train depot, The Black Hotel originally served as an inn and as the social hub of the community. Freshly restored in 2022, the traditional American Foursquare historic building is now back to serving its original purpose. 214 S Dickerson St 910-408-6000 thependerhouse.com
